Are morning or night workouts better? Here's what experts say.

What's the best time for working out : morning, afternoon or evening? 

Experts say it depends on your goals, but that any movement — no matter the time of day — is better than none.

"What I tell my patients is work out when you can," medical weight loss physician Dr. Sue Decotiis recently  told CBS News . "If it's easier and more convenient for you to get to the gym in the morning, then go ahead and do that. If you can't get there until the afternoon, then do that."

When it comes to working out at different times of the day, Mauro Maietta, Crunch Fitness district fitness manager, says there are some differences to consider.

Morning workouts: "Exercising in the morning can help boost your metabolism and energy levels throughout the day and be a great way to establish a consistent routine," Maietta says. 

In a study published last year, researchers observed a "strong linear association" between working out and lowered obesity for people who exercised in the morning compared to afternoon and evening groups. 

Afternoon workouts:  "Working out in the afternoon can serve as a stress reliever after a long day," Maietta says. "Plus, body temperature and muscle flexibility tend to peak in the late afternoon making it a good time for more intense workouts."

Evening workouts: Working out in the evening can help you relieve stress from the day and unwind, Maietta says.

If you are opting for evening workouts , however, Maietta says it's important to finish up at least a few hours before bedtime to avoid sleep disruption .

"At least ensure you set aside 15 to 20 minutes for a substantial cooldown to bring your heart rate close to resting levels," she says.

"Consistency is often more critical"

While exercising at different times of day may be tied to certain benefits, some researchers have found results may also differ between men and women. 

A small study published in 2022 found women who worked out in the morning lost more fat and had greater reductions in blood pressure, while working out at night promoted muscle strength and enhanced mood. For men, the study found working out in the evening promoted more fat loss and greater reductions in blood pressure compared to working out in the morning.  

"Ultimately, the best time and frequency for your workouts depends on your individual schedule, preferences, and how your body responds," Maietta says. 

You don't have to set a chunk of time aside during a specific time of day for exercise, either.  Micro-workouts  — mini bursts of exercise, from as little as 20 seconds to a few minutes at a time — are great ways to incorporate short bouts of movement into your day. 

CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook also suggests some simple "hacks" to fit extra movement into your day, like taking the stairs instead of an elevator or walking the last 10 blocks of your commute.

"Make it so that you're not saying, 'OK, now I have to do exercise' — exercise becomes just part and parcel of how you live your life,"  he says . 

The bottom line: Consistency is key. 

"It's important to choose a time that allows you to be consistent with your exercise routine . Consistency is often more critical than the specific time of day you work out," Maietta adds. "Listen to your body, adjust as needed, and consult with a fitness professional if you have specific goals or health considerations."

At-home exercise programs work really well for this, since your sweat session is pre-programmed for you whenever you have the motivation to log on or open an app. You definitely want a program catered for beginners so all the moves are explained and at a level safe for your body.

If your current regimen is simply walking around your house, do more of that — but take it outside and add a goal of one mile. Then make it two miles or start jogging that one mile.

Of course, you also want to consider your overall goals when looking for a workout to follow, Boyd added. Do you want to build strength to lift heavy weights? Gain muscle or increase muscle size? Improve your endurance or stamina so you can work for longer without getting fatigued?

Each of these objectives requires different methods of training, Boyd explains, and while they do overlap, it's still smart to choose a program that tailors directly to the goal. 

Strength vs. cardio?

Every person new to fitness will at some point wonder if they should be doing more cardio , like running , dancing, or high-intensity interval training (aka HIIT), or more strength training , whether that's with bodyweight exercises or lifting dumbbells . 

Really, it's best to do a combo of both, Boyd says. You can accomplish that by doing cardio one day and dumbbells the next. But you can also incorporate both into a workout : Intervals (which involve working hard for a set time like 30 seconds, then resting for a set time like another 30 seconds) will benefit your cardiovascular system, and if you incorporate weights, can help you build lean muscle and strength, too. 

Phil Higgins , CSCS, clinical director at Bespoke Treatments physical therapy center in Seattle touts the benefits of strength training and how it translates from the gym to everyday life. For example, if you prefer outdoor activities, like hiking or running , weightlifting will help you get better at them. 

Higgins told Insider it's especially helpful to team up with a fitness professional when starting a strength training program (or any fitness program).

You'll get mentally and physically exhausted, which can easily kill your motivation. "Strength training has so many health benefits that it should be part of any fitness routine," according to The Gym Group master trainer Jenni Tardiff. 

Her point is hard to argue with, considering lifting weights can strengthen your muscles and bones, boost your metabolism and even improve your mood. But where should you start, if the weights area is out of your comfort zone?

Try Tardiff’s four-move full-body dumbbell routine, which can be done at home or in a quiet corner of the gym. It takes 30 minutes and targets a wide range of muscles, including those found in your legs, arms, back and core.

The Gym Group’s master trainer, Jenni Tardiff, has over a decade of experience in the fitness industry. She leads various exercise classes, including cycling, circuits and yoga, and recently became The Gym Group's HYROX Academy master trainer and coach.

How to do Jenni Tardiff’s four-move dumbbell workout

  • Goblet squat 3x12-15
  • Chest press 3x12-15
  • Bent-over row 3x12-15
  • Alternating lunge 3x10 (on each leg) 

Perform the exercises listed above as straight sets. This means you’ll do all sets, reps and rests for one exercise before moving on to the next one. 

For example, you’ll start with 12-15 goblet squats, rest for 60-120 seconds, then repeat this sequence two more times. Once you’ve finished all three sets, you’re ready to progress to the chest press.

1. Goblet squat

Sets: 3 Reps: 12-15 Rest: 60-120 seconds 

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell close to your chest with both hands.
  • Squat down, keeping your back straight, knees out and your chest up. 
  • Push through your heels to return to the starting position.

"Goblet squats are perfect for beginners as they target the lower-body muscles and promote proper squat form. The added weight challenges your muscles, building strength and improving overall stability," says Tardiff.  

2. Chest press

  • Lie on your back on a weight bench or the floor. Hold a dumbbell in each hand with your palms facing each other and your arms straight above your chest. 
  • Without flaring your elbows out to the side, slowly lower the dumbbells until they are at your chest.
  • Push them back up to the starting position.

"The dumbbell chest press helps build upper-body strength and muscular endurance, making daily activities easier and promoting a well-balanced physique," says Tardiff. 

3. Bent-over row

  • Stand with your feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand. 
  • Hinge at your hips, keeping your back straight, and let the dumbbells hang directly beneath your shoulders. This is your starting position. 
  • Pull the dumbbells towards the bottom of your ribcage, squeezing your shoulder blades together and keeping your elbows back and close to your body.
  • Control the dumbbells back to the starting position. 

"Bent over rows target the muscles of the upper back. Strengthening these muscles helps improve posture and reduces the risk of back pain, making it an essential exercise for beginners," says Tardiff. 

4. Alternating lunge

Sets: 3 Reps: 12-15 (on each leg) Rest: 60-120 seconds 

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand. 
  • Step forward with one foot, keeping your torso upright and lowering your hips until both knees are bent at a 90° angle. 
  • Push off your front foot, driving through the heel to return to the starting position, then repeat on the other leg.

"The lunge enhances lower-body strength, balance and flexibility, making it an excellent choice for beginners looking to develop a strong foundation," says Tardiff. 

Tardiff’s first top tip for tackling this workout is to prioritize your form above all else. This will ensure you’re recruiting the right muscles and reducing your risk of injury. As part of your warm-up you could practice each move with just your bodyweight. 

Once you feel comfortable with each of the exercises, the next thing to do is to choose the right weight for your dumbbells. 

"Start with light dumbbells to master the technique, then you can increase the weight as needed," she says. 

"The dumbbell weight should be challenging enough that you can complete 12 repetitions of each exercise but you’re struggling by rep 15," says Tardiff. "If you can do more than 15 repetitions with the correct technique then you should increase the weight."

This will provide the stimulus needed for your body to start making changes, such as strengthening your muscles and bones.

"Weightlifting enhances bone density, helping to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and keeping your body strong. This is especially important as we age. 

"It also builds lean muscle mass [which increases your resting metabolic rate] and supports weight management," says Tardiff.

It’s not an exclusive pursuit for muscle-bound gym-goers either. 

"It’s brilliant for beginners. Dumbbells are a great way to start your strength training journey as they are so versatile, allowing you to gradually progress the intensity of your workouts. And there are so many exercises you can perform making them very accessible."

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

People all over the world are becoming fitness conscious as they have realized that it is the most important and have shifted their priorities from everything else to keep them fit and fine as healthy with wealth. Regular exercise has several benefits it helps the body to get into the desired shape and develops resistance power from gaining additional and excessive weight. It helps a person safe from diseases such as obesity, blood pressure, heart diseases, and high cholesterol. Furthermore, an activity also helps in reducing depression and insomnia by enhancing sleeping routines. Also, such activity is known to produce positive vibes inside a person which in turn increases the person’s confidence. (Hardcastle, 2006)

Fitness training fine-tunes the muscles using and burning calories in the body which also increases the metabolic rate in the body. While an inactive person will have his or her body losing its muscles decreasing the metabolism of the body, resulting in concentration of calories and formation of fat and the person gains weight. Exercises like walking, jogging, running, swimming, doing push-ups and pull-ups, running up a flight of stairs, doing crunches, cycling, etc. not only helps a person maintain an outer strong and toned look but it also help the organs like heart, lungs, liver and other to function properly while giving mental peace. (Hasselfors, Hans, n.d.)

For the community, there can be several initiatives taken to help people exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet. Being a nutritionist advisor, I can guide people on what types of food are healthy and which types of foods should be avoided. As a social welfare worker, I can organize marathons for social causes where people can participate in the form of marathon exercises and also serve a more worldly cause. By adopting an educationist’s role, I can educate the positive aspects of personal fitness and make people aware of the negatives of not exercising. Also, I can start dancing lessons for young boys and girls where from an early stage not only children learn to dance but also learn to exercise. Furthermore, I can become a sport’s proponent where teaching people to play sports will also help them increase their activity and become fit. (Personal Health Zone, 2009)

The most common type of exercise is walking or running. From a casual stroll to a paced walk every day works the muscles relentlessly. Yet another popular exercise common amongst the younger people is playing sports since most sports involve running and stretching out the body muscles. Aerobics or even dancing is a type of exercise that is fun yet physically strengthening. Although swimming might fall under the banner of sports, most people swim to relax in the water and have a good time, and can exercise their body at the same time. For the more body-conscious people, bodybuilding is a set of exercises that strengthens the muscles by picking weights and putting regular pressure. Carrying excessive loads from to and fro also is a form of exercise. Furthermore, in a computer-related work environment, where repetitive strain injury (RSI) is quite common, people should take regular breaks and stretch out their muscles. People recommend the use of machines available in gymnasiums to flex their muscles. Yet another method of exercising is cycling either on a bicycle or a gymnasium machine. (ADAM, 2004)

Active people tend to outlive those who are inactive. In case of being physically inactive for a long time and then taking drastic measures to lose weight to achieve a good result is not an efficient way, as it will not have a lifelong effect on the body. It is rather recommended to consult the physician and go slowly and step-wise. Alongside maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating healthy food, avoiding junk and fast food, and exercising regularly mainly in the early morning and late evening as these are the effective times for exercising.
