Does a writer's ideology affect the very quality of the writer's work? This essay argues that those who are unable to empathize (conservatives in their hearts) are less likely to create masterpieces than those who are sympathetic to the plight of humanity (progressives). I "apply" Fukuyama's End of History to compare the quality of one author writing before the "End" and another modern day author writing after the end of history and reveal the latter's inability to connect. The context is provided by my own struggle with the question of just what is Great Literature and what intellectual tools does a writer need to aim that high. The personal narrative includes my own experiences as a student at the Vermont MFA writing program as well as my lessons from working at the same time as an economist at the World Bank and then experiencing the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
