The Difference between an Essay and a Poem

Unlike a poem, it's highly unlikely anyone will ever want to set one of your essays to music. While some poems may set out to accomplish the same goals as an essay, such as presenting an argument or telling a story, the structure, common techniques, and basic rules required for an essay are quite different than a poem.

Essay vs. Poem

No matter what type of essay you're asked to write, such as argumentative, expository, descriptive, or narrative, there are usually structuring requirements that must be applied. An introductory paragraph that presents your ideas, a body that lays out each of those ideas clearly, and a summary paragraph that presents some type of conclusion are the common requirements for most traditional essays.

Poems, on the other hand, can vary widely in structure. Haikus, sonnets, limericks, and ballads are all forms of poetry and each is defined by its unique and specific structure. Poems can rhyme or not rhyme, be freeform or limited to a certain number of syllables, and they can fill a book or be written in 14 lines of iambic pentameter.

Techniques for writing a good essay include presenting ordered points that relate back to a single thesis statement, writing interesting and relevant topic sentences to present ideas for each paragraph, and presenting excellent supportive references from outside sources.

Poems, on the other hand, use alliteration, creative similes and metaphors, onomatopoeia, assonance, and rhyming lines. However, many poems include none of these. Unlike essays, there are no universal techniques used in good poetry. Creativity wins the day over following hard and fast rules.

Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation

Anyone who has ever submitted an essay assignment knows that grammar, spelling, and punctuation are key in a good essay. Every sentence should end with the proper punctuation mark, creative spelling is frowned upon, and an essay writer should proofread to ensure subject/verb agreement, sentence structure, and use of proper English.

In poetry, rules like these are often tossed out the window. Entire poems can be written with nary a punctuation mark in sight, and the creative use of language is encouraged.

In short, poems allow for a lot more creative freedom and can include a wide range of possible structures and techniques. An essay makes logical points that should be clear to anyone who reads it. Even the best poems, however, sometimes make sense to no one other than their authors.

5 Writers Who Blur the Boundary Between Poetry and Essay

"poets are the hoarders of the literary world".

There is a Bernadette Mayer writing exercise that suggests attempting to flood the brain with ideas from varying sources, then writing it all down, without looking at the page or what spreads over it. I have attempted this exercise multiple times, with multiple sources, and what I love about it—along with many of Mayer’s other 81 prompts—is that what comes out can literally take any form. The form is not dictated by the content I read, nor the rules of the exercise. The information I collect prior to writing may be entirely disparate, seemingly unrelated, but through the writing, it begins to take shape, and links are found. In the process of communicating information in a lyric way, barriers to form withheld, I am able to develop a richer portrait of what thinking really looks like.

I heard someone say once that poets are the hoarders of the literary world: collectors of facts, dates, quotes, newspaper headlines, ticket stubs, and love letters. Indeed, another of Mayer’s prompts is to keep a diary, or diar ies , of such useful things. As these journal pages begin to overflow, content spilling over the borders, the writing becomes something we might not always call a poem. Reflecting on his poetry collection The Little Edges and a book of essays The Service Porch , both of which appeared in 2016, poet and critic Fred Moten said , “The line between the criticism and the poetry is sort of blurry. I got some stuff in the poems that probably could’ve been collected with the essays.”

There is a long-standing tradition of poets who have refused genre, or reinvented it, and who continue to push the boundaries of form. Here are five, but just a cursory glance into any of their work will lead you to uncover many more.

Jenny Boully

Jenny Boully

The first essay in Jenny Boully’s latest collection Betwixt and Between: Essays on the Writing Life, published last month, is a journey into two illusive linguistic temporalities: “the future imagined and the past imagined. ” By positioning the reader in a space of hypothesis, Boully tests the limits of memory and lived experience, never quite allowing her reader to land on stable footing. With this linguistic trick, a redefinition of what is the personal begins to emerge.

Throughout her work, Boully is interested in reorienting the role of the reader from passive to participatory and reorienting the structure of the text from chronological to sensory. In an introduction to Boully’s work, Mary Jo Bang writes , “She uses form in a way that undercuts our every expectation based on previous encounters with poetry.” It’s no wonder that excerpts from her first book The Body , written as footnotes to an imaginary text, were included in both John D’Agata’s  The Next American Essay and The Best American Poetry 2002 .

Dodie Bellamy

Dodie Bellamy is a seamstress of language. Her work stretches the definitions of narrative writing by incorporating literary appropriation, cut-ups, collage, and détournement, or the act of turning a recognizable cultural product on itself, a technique developed by the Situationist International in the 1950s. Her poetic “cunt ups” take works of the traditional poetic canon and reinvent them with a contemporary feminist voice, directly splicing the historic masculine texts with pornographic imagery. The 2013 collection Cunt Norton employs the original language of 33 canonical poets, twisting them into erotic poems as an act of love for her predecessors. “These patriarchal voices that threatened to erase me—of course I love them as well,” Bellamy wrote of the work . Her experiments began to take a more prosaic form as she desired further space for her content. “I was writing linked poems that kept getting longer and more narrative,” she said in an interview .

Due to her inventive and often hysterical treatment of language, Bellamy’s voice is engaging on any topic. The themes she tackles in her collected essays When the Sick Rule the World range from the gentrification of San Francisco, her experiences with a women’s writing group and a moving tribute to the late equally inventive writer Kathy Acker, in the form of a catalogue of the contents of her wardrobe.

Claudia Rankine

When Claudia Rankine’s Citizen won the National Book Critics Circle Award, the judges’ citation read, in part, “It’s not (just) poetry.” The prose-poetry hybrid is a current throughout her work; her previous poetry title Don’t Let Me Be Lonely  was described, alongside Citizen , as “lyric essays” in the  The New York Review of Books . Rankine’s work uses investigative tools of poetry to probe what it means to be human and to encourage readers to examine their personal responsibility to others. Through experiments in form, she highlights the dangers of lazy classification of people and experiences; her words in any medium provoke self-reflection.

In Citizen , a 2015 essay on Serena Williams finds a comfortable home alongside prose and list poems. With her employment of the second person throughout the collection, Rankine prompts her readers to enter into the very experiences she is describing, whether they are wholly familiar or not. As such, her approach is in equal measure confrontational and humanizing.

6 05 poem vs essay

David Rattray

When the poet, critic, and renowned translator David Rattray passed away at the age of 57 in 1993, the experimental writer Lynn Tillman wrote , “He swept us away also with his ‘bad attitude,’ his insubordination to authority and to the authority of what he knew.” This was true not just in the manner he lived his life, but also how he captured life in text. A principle translator of Antonin Artaud, Rattray’s own poems display a diary-like quality: they are grand narrations stuffed full of dates, places, people.

A collection of essays and stories exploring his relationship to close friends, grief, drugs, travel, and literature called How I Became One of the Invisible was put together by Chris Kraus just before his death. Through narratives that are at once breathless and directional, and full of poetic references and quotes, Rattray reveals his deep feelings for those with whom he shared his life. “He believed people were gems, precious, and treated them accordingly,” Betsy Sussler wrote , following his passing. And so too did he treat his words, allowing us to enter into his world imbued with sensitivity.

6 05 poem vs essay

Maggie Nelson

Asked in an interview by Emily Gould as to how she decides on which genre(s) she will employ when writing a new book, Maggie Nelson replied , “Genre, for me, is determined by the unfolding of my interests, which is unknowable at a projects’ start.” Her defiance of category is not only evident in her bibliography, but in the bibliography of each book which makes it up. Bluets , which began as an investigation into the color blue and its varying manifestations throughout history, became a book of prose poems. The Art of Cruelty , a personal reflection on the employment of violence in art, became a book of academic criticism. Begun as a work of criticism, The Argonauts became a personal memoir, with its background research spilling, literally, into the margins. “I find my way to the right tone, idiom, form or set of subjects as I bumble along,” Nelson says.

It is her very adaptability of form and expression that has become one of her signature attributes, despite the literary world’s continued insistence on writerly classification, and in turn mimics the fluidity of her subjects. Hilton Als writes , “It’s Nelson’s articulation of her many selves . . . that makes her readers feel hopeful.”

Listen: Claudia Rankine talks to Paul Holdengräber about objectifying the moment, investigating a subject, and accidental stalking.

If you’re a student or new reviewer first approaching the task, you may be wondering how to write a poem analysis. Fortunately, there are concrete steps you can take to analyze a poem or collection of poetry. Even if you do not plan on learning how to write a poem analysis essay, building a routine of analysis into your poetry reading can deepen your appreciation for the genre.

Poems have many layers of meaning. A particularly beautiful and well-crafted poem only becomes more enjoyable the more you increase your understanding of the decisions the poet made to craft it. The following steps outline the kinds of questions to ask yourself while writing a poem analysis.

Step 1: Read the Poem Aloud

Poetry has a long oral history. Poets often utilize sound techniques which are easier to detect when reading the poem aloud. Read it once without an analytical focus. Simply notice how you respond to the poem. Begin by asking yourself broad, simple questions such as: How did this make me feel? What do I think the poet is trying to say?

Jot some notes down about your initial impression. Analyzing a poem is a recursive process. You will read the poem several times, and these first impressions can provide interesting clues for what to focus on in your analysis.

Step 2: Identify the Type of Poem

There are several different types of poems, but all poems fall into three overarching categories: free verse, formal verse, and prose poems. Formal poetry itself comes in many more specific forms. Check out A Beginner’s Guide to Different Types of Poems.

There are certain analytical questions you can ask yourself depending on the type of the poem you’re reading. If this is a prose poem, ask yourself, what exactly makes this piece of writing a poem, as opposed to a short piece of prose? Recognizing a specific poetic form allows you to contextualize the poem in history. For example, if you’re reading a sonnet, consider how the poem you’re analyzing fits with or fights against the conventions of sonnets.

Step 3: Mark It Up

There is no one correct way to mark up a poem. You can underline lines which stand out to you. You can take notes in the margins identifying poetic techniques as you see them. You can scan the poem,  a method of marking stressed and unstressed syllables. You can circle words which seem important or stand out as surprising.

If you are reviewing an entire poetry collection, it’s a good idea to take notes in the margins about particular motifs or themes. That way, when you are finished with your first read, you can look for ideas which appeared in multiple poems.

Step 4: Consider Poetic Techniques

Read the poem several times, considering a single poetic technique at a time. For example, free verse and formal poems use line breaks. Read through the poem once, focusing on how the poet has broken lines, and the impact of those decisions. If the poem contains stanzas, do the same for stanzas. You can repeat this process with any poetic technique: similes, metaphors, imagery, assonance, consonance, alliteration. How do these poetic techniques support, enhance, or problematize the overall message of the poem? Your observations will prove crucial when you are ready to sit down and write a poem analysis.

Step 5: Pay Attention to the Turn(s)

In poetry, the term “volta,” sometimes called a “turn,” is a shift in the tone, meaning, or style of a poem. This is a common enough poetic technique that it warrants its own step in the analytic process. Nearly every sonnet contains a turn in the final two lines of the poem, but countless other types of poems contain some sort of shift.

Voltas are so common that if the poem you’re reading does not contain a volta, that is a decision worth incorporating into a poem analysis. You can always ask yourself whether or not a poem contains a turn, and how this impacts the poem overall. Focus on the final lines of a poem, since that is where the volta typically appears.

Step 6: Make an Argument

If you are reviewing an entire poetry collection you can use the above steps for each poem. Then consider the way that the poet has chosen to order the poems within the collection. Revisit the first and last poems, asking yourself how they might function as a kind of introduction and conclusion to the collection.

As with any other essay in the realm of literature, in order to write a poem analysis essay, you should formulate an argument and back it up with evidence. Different readers can have opposing ideas about how a poem or collection of poetry operates, and that’s okay, as long as both readers have evidence to support their claims. How do you back up your claims with evidence? Refer to your notes, especially your observations of poetic techniques. Whenever necessary, quote exact lines or stanzas and use them to support your argument.

Step 7: Consider the Audience

Writing a book review of a poetry collection is considerably different from writing an essay about it. That is because book reviews serve a different purpose than essays do. Individual readers, book buyers, and librarians read reviews in order to decide whether or not to purchase a book.

Ask yourself: what kind of reader might enjoy this collection? It’s always a good idea to compare and contrast to other collections of poetry. You can recommend the poetry collection you’re reviewing to fans of another poet, for example.

Book reviews tend to be considerably shorter than essays, often as short as two or three hundred words. For that reason, it’s important to be concise. Unlike reviewing fiction or nonfiction, you do not exactly need to “summarize” a poetry collection. Most poetry collections cannot be summarized the way that a novel or nonfiction book can. Instead, list some of the central thematic concerns of the collection and describe the poetic style. Tell your readers what kind of poems they will find in this collection. Are these prose poems, free verse, formal verse, or a combination? Are they simple, accessible poems, or complex poems with unusual syntax? Does the collection contain a lot of references?

In a book review, you will want to quote a line or two which represents some aspect of the poetry collection as a whole. Since you do not have a lot of space, choose something representative of the poet’s style. This will give readers an idea of whether or not this collection appeals to them. The Four Main Types of Essay | Quick Guide with Examples

Published on September 4, 2020 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on July 23, 2023.

An essay is a focused piece of writing designed to inform or persuade. There are many different types of essay, but they are often defined in four categories: argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive essays.

Argumentative and expository essays are focused on conveying information and making clear points, while narrative and descriptive essays are about exercising creativity and writing in an interesting way. At university level, argumentative essays are the most common type.

In high school and college, you will also often have to write textual analysis essays, which test your skills in close reading and interpretation.

Argumentative essays, expository essays, narrative essays, descriptive essays, textual analysis essays, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about types of essays.

An argumentative essay presents an extended, evidence-based argument. It requires a strong thesis statement —a clearly defined stance on your topic. Your aim is to convince the reader of your thesis using evidence (such as quotations ) and analysis.

Argumentative essays test your ability to research and present your own position on a topic. This is the most common type of essay at college level—most papers you write will involve some kind of argumentation.

The essay is divided into an introduction, body, and conclusion:

  • The introduction provides your topic and thesis statement
  • The body presents your evidence and arguments
  • The conclusion summarizes your argument and emphasizes its importance

The example below is a paragraph from the body of an argumentative essay about the effects of the internet on education. Mouse over it to learn more.

A common frustration for teachers is students’ use of Wikipedia as a source in their writing. Its prevalence among students is not exaggerated; a survey found that the vast majority of the students surveyed used Wikipedia (Head & Eisenberg, 2010). An article in The Guardian stresses a common objection to its use: “a reliance on Wikipedia can discourage students from engaging with genuine academic writing” (Coomer, 2013). Teachers are clearly not mistaken in viewing Wikipedia usage as ubiquitous among their students; but the claim that it discourages engagement with academic sources requires further investigation. This point is treated as self-evident by many teachers, but Wikipedia itself explicitly encourages students to look into other sources. Its articles often provide references to academic publications and include warning notes where citations are missing; the site’s own guidelines for research make clear that it should be used as a starting point, emphasizing that users should always “read the references and check whether they really do support what the article says” (“Wikipedia:Researching with Wikipedia,” 2020). Indeed, for many students, Wikipedia is their first encounter with the concepts of citation and referencing. The use of Wikipedia therefore has a positive side that merits deeper consideration than it often receives.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

An expository essay provides a clear, focused explanation of a topic. It doesn’t require an original argument, just a balanced and well-organized view of the topic.

Expository essays test your familiarity with a topic and your ability to organize and convey information. They are commonly assigned at high school or in exam questions at college level.

The introduction of an expository essay states your topic and provides some general background, the body presents the details, and the conclusion summarizes the information presented.

A typical body paragraph from an expository essay about the invention of the printing press is shown below. Mouse over it to learn more.

The invention of the printing press in 1440 changed this situation dramatically. Johannes Gutenberg, who had worked as a goldsmith, used his knowledge of metals in the design of the press. He made his type from an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony, whose durability allowed for the reliable production of high-quality books. This new technology allowed texts to be reproduced and disseminated on a much larger scale than was previously possible. The Gutenberg Bible appeared in the 1450s, and a large number of printing presses sprang up across the continent in the following decades. Gutenberg’s invention rapidly transformed cultural production in Europe; among other things, it would lead to the Protestant Reformation.

A narrative essay is one that tells a story. This is usually a story about a personal experience you had, but it may also be an imaginative exploration of something you have not experienced.

Narrative essays test your ability to build up a narrative in an engaging, well-structured way. They are much more personal and creative than other kinds of academic writing . Writing a personal statement for an application requires the same skills as a narrative essay.

A narrative essay isn’t strictly divided into introduction, body, and conclusion, but it should still begin by setting up the narrative and finish by expressing the point of the story—what you learned from your experience, or why it made an impression on you.

Mouse over the example below, a short narrative essay responding to the prompt “Write about an experience where you learned something about yourself,” to explore its structure.

Since elementary school, I have always favored subjects like science and math over the humanities. My instinct was always to think of these subjects as more solid and serious than classes like English. If there was no right answer, I thought, why bother? But recently I had an experience that taught me my academic interests are more flexible than I had thought: I took my first philosophy class.

Before I entered the classroom, I was skeptical. I waited outside with the other students and wondered what exactly philosophy would involve—I really had no idea. I imagined something pretty abstract: long, stilted conversations pondering the meaning of life. But what I got was something quite different.

A young man in jeans, Mr. Jones—“but you can call me Rob”—was far from the white-haired, buttoned-up old man I had half-expected. And rather than pulling us into pedantic arguments about obscure philosophical points, Rob engaged us on our level. To talk free will, we looked at our own choices. To talk ethics, we looked at dilemmas we had faced ourselves. By the end of class, I’d discovered that questions with no right answer can turn out to be the most interesting ones.

The experience has taught me to look at things a little more “philosophically”—and not just because it was a philosophy class! I learned that if I let go of my preconceptions, I can actually get a lot out of subjects I was previously dismissive of. The class taught me—in more ways than one—to look at things with an open mind.

A descriptive essay provides a detailed sensory description of something. Like narrative essays, they allow you to be more creative than most academic writing, but they are more tightly focused than narrative essays. You might describe a specific place or object, rather than telling a whole story.

Descriptive essays test your ability to use language creatively, making striking word choices to convey a memorable picture of what you’re describing.

A descriptive essay can be quite loosely structured, though it should usually begin by introducing the object of your description and end by drawing an overall picture of it. The important thing is to use careful word choices and figurative language to create an original description of your object.

Mouse over the example below, a response to the prompt “Describe a place you love to spend time in,” to learn more about descriptive essays.

On Sunday afternoons I like to spend my time in the garden behind my house. The garden is narrow but long, a corridor of green extending from the back of the house, and I sit on a lawn chair at the far end to read and relax. I am in my small peaceful paradise: the shade of the tree, the feel of the grass on my feet, the gentle activity of the fish in the pond beside me.

My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above. From his perch he can watch over his little kingdom and keep an eye on the neighbours. He does this until the barking of next door’s dog scares him from his post and he bolts for the cat flap to govern from the safety of the kitchen.

With that, I am left alone with the fish, whose whole world is the pond by my feet. The fish explore the pond every day as if for the first time, prodding and inspecting every stone. I sometimes feel the same about sitting here in the garden; I know the place better than anyone, but whenever I return I still feel compelled to pay attention to all its details and novelties—a new bird perched in the tree, the growth of the grass, and the movement of the insects it shelters…

Sitting out in the garden, I feel serene. I feel at home. And yet I always feel there is more to discover. The bounds of my garden may be small, but there is a whole world contained within it, and it is one I will never get tired of inhabiting.

Though every essay type tests your writing skills, some essays also test your ability to read carefully and critically. In a textual analysis essay, you don’t just present information on a topic, but closely analyze a text to explain how it achieves certain effects.

Rhetorical analysis

A rhetorical analysis looks at a persuasive text (e.g. a speech, an essay, a political cartoon) in terms of the rhetorical devices it uses, and evaluates their effectiveness.

The goal is not to state whether you agree with the author’s argument but to look at how they have constructed it.

The introduction of a rhetorical analysis presents the text, some background information, and your thesis statement; the body comprises the analysis itself; and the conclusion wraps up your analysis of the text, emphasizing its relevance to broader concerns.

The example below is from a rhetorical analysis of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech . Mouse over it to learn more.

King’s speech is infused with prophetic language throughout. Even before the famous “dream” part of the speech, King’s language consistently strikes a prophetic tone. He refers to the Lincoln Memorial as a “hallowed spot” and speaks of rising “from the dark and desolate valley of segregation” to “make justice a reality for all of God’s children.” The assumption of this prophetic voice constitutes the text’s strongest ethical appeal; after linking himself with political figures like Lincoln and the Founding Fathers, King’s ethos adopts a distinctly religious tone, recalling Biblical prophets and preachers of change from across history. This adds significant force to his words; standing before an audience of hundreds of thousands, he states not just what the future should be, but what it will be: “The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.” This warning is almost apocalyptic in tone, though it concludes with the positive image of the “bright day of justice.” The power of King’s rhetoric thus stems not only from the pathos of his vision of a brighter future, but from the ethos of the prophetic voice he adopts in expressing this vision.

Literary analysis

A literary analysis essay presents a close reading of a work of literature—e.g. a poem or novel—to explore the choices made by the author and how they help to convey the text’s theme. It is not simply a book report or a review, but an in-depth interpretation of the text.

Literary analysis looks at things like setting, characters, themes, and figurative language. The goal is to closely analyze what the author conveys and how.

The introduction of a literary analysis essay presents the text and background, and provides your thesis statement; the body consists of close readings of the text with quotations and analysis in support of your argument; and the conclusion emphasizes what your approach tells us about the text.

Mouse over the example below, the introduction to a literary analysis essay on Frankenstein , to learn more.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale about the dangers of scientific advancement unrestrained by ethical considerations. In this reading, protagonist Victor Frankenstein is a stable representation of the callous ambition of modern science throughout the novel. This essay, however, argues that far from providing a stable image of the character, Shelley uses shifting narrative perspectives to portray Frankenstein in an increasingly negative light as the novel goes on. While he initially appears to be a naive but sympathetic idealist, after the creature’s narrative Frankenstein begins to resemble—even in his own telling—the thoughtlessly cruel figure the creature represents him as. This essay begins by exploring the positive portrayal of Frankenstein in the first volume, then moves on to the creature’s perception of him, and finally discusses the third volume’s narrative shift toward viewing Frankenstein as the creature views him.

At high school and in composition classes at university, you’ll often be told to write a specific type of essay , but you might also just be given prompts.

Look for keywords in these prompts that suggest a certain approach: The word “explain” suggests you should write an expository essay , while the word “describe” implies a descriptive essay . An argumentative essay might be prompted with the word “assess” or “argue.”

The vast majority of essays written at university are some sort of argumentative essay . Almost all academic writing involves building up an argument, though other types of essay might be assigned in composition classes.

Essays can present arguments about all kinds of different topics. For example:

  • In a literary analysis essay, you might make an argument for a specific interpretation of a text
  • In a history essay, you might present an argument for the importance of a particular event
  • In a politics essay, you might argue for the validity of a certain political theory

An argumentative essay tends to be a longer essay involving independent research, and aims to make an original argument about a topic. Its thesis statement makes a contentious claim that must be supported in an objective, evidence-based way.

An expository essay also aims to be objective, but it doesn’t have to make an original argument. Rather, it aims to explain something (e.g., a process or idea) in a clear, concise way. Expository essays are often shorter assignments and rely less on research.

The key difference is that a narrative essay is designed to tell a complete story, while a descriptive essay is meant to convey an intense description of a particular place, object, or concept.

Narrative and descriptive essays both allow you to write more personally and creatively than other kinds of essays , and similar writing skills can apply to both.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine the structure and organization of common types of essays

Suggested Essay Structure

Some common layouts for essay organization are listed below.

Argumentative Essay

Recall that in an argumentative essay, you are asked to take a stance about an issue. One effective way to argue a point can be to present the opposing view first, usually in your introduction paragraph, then counter this view with stronger evidence in your essay. You can also explain your argument and claims, then address the opposing view at the end of your paper, or you could address opposing views one at a time, including the rebuttal throughout your paper.

Argumentative Essay: Block Format

  • Background information on topic
  • Statement of your position on the topic (thesis)
  • Overview of arguments to be presented (structure)
  • Topic sentence outlining first claim
  • Sentences giving explanations and providing evidence to support topic sentence
  • Concluding sentence – link to next paragraph
  • Topic sentence outlining second claim
  • Sentences giving explanations and providing evidence to back topic sentence
  • Topic sentence outlining any possible counterarguments
  • Provide evidence to refute counterarguments
  • Summary of the main points of the body
  • Restatement of the position

Argumentative Essay: Rebuttal Throughout

This type of format works well for topics that have obvious pros and cons.

  • Introduction and Thesis
  • Topic sentence outlining first rebuttal
  • Opposing Viewpoint
  • Statistics and facts to support your side
  • Summary of the main arguments and counterarguments

The Comparative Essay

Comparative essays are those that you have you compare , compare and contrast , or differentiate between things and concepts. In this structure, the similarities and/or differences between two or more items (for example, theories or models) are discussed paragraph by paragraph. Your assignment task may require you to make a recommendation about the suitability of the items you are comparing.

There are two basic formats for the compare/contrast essay: block or point-by-point. Block divides the essay in half with the first set of paragraphs covering one item, the other set of paragraphs covering the other item. So, if the writer is contrasting a Nikon DSLR with a similar priced Canon DSLR, the first set of paragraphs would cover Nikon and the next set would cover Canon. In point-by-point, the writer would cover the two items alternating in each point of comparison (see examples in outlines below).

Comparative Essay: Block Method

  • Introduction and thesis
  • Image Quality
  • Shutter Speed
  • The Auto-focus System

Comparative Essay: Point-by-Point Method

  • Introduction
  • Nikon D7000

Cause and Effect Essay

Examples of cause and effect essays include questions that ask you to state or investigate the effects or outline the causes of the topic. This may be, for example, a historical event, the implementation of a policy, a medical condition, or a natural disaster. These essays may be structured in one of two ways: either the causes(s) of a situation may be discussed first followed by the effect(s), or the effect(s) could come first with the discussion working back to outline the cause(s). Sometimes with cause and effect essays, you are required to give an assessment of the overall effects of an event on a community, a workplace, an individual.

Cause and Effect Essay Format

  • Background information on the situation under discussion
  • Description of the situation
  • Overview of the causes or effects to be outlined
  • Topic sentence outlining first cause or effect
  • Sentences giving explanations and providing evidence to support the topic sentence
  • Concluding sentence – linking to the next paragraph
  • Topic sentence outlining second cause or effect
  • These follow the same structure for as many causes or effects as you need to outline
  • Conclusion, prediction or recommendation

Mixed Structure Assignment

Finally, consider that some essay assignments may ask you to combine approaches. You will rarely follow the above outlines with exactness, but can use the outlines and templates of common rhetorical patterns to help shape your essay. Remember that the ultimate goal is to construct a smooth and coherent message with information that flows nicely from one paragraph to the next.

This chart gives an idea of what different roles paragraphs can play in a mixed-structure essay assignment.

Heesen’s Hybrid Superyacht

  • By Kim Kavin
  • Updated: April 23, 2019

164-foot Heesen Yacht Home

Capt. Mike French has learned how to make an entrance.

He realized early on that the 164-foot Heesen Home garners more attention than other yachts. Her contemporary exterior styling catches the eye, so much so that one time, on a Fort Lauderdale river, he looked out and saw more people taking pictures than he’s seen from aboard any other yacht in the past 30 years.

So, he decided to combine Home ‘s charisma with her 7-foot draft, putting her in places where she isn’t expected to be, and where she looks even grander.

“In the Tobago Cays, we can get into where the smaller sailboats are,” he says. “It’s pretty impressive. We got into Highbourne Cay the other day in the Bahamas with all the smaller boats — those are the sorts of things we can do. Everyone’s looking, and people like that. It’s not inconspicuous.”

164-foot Heesen Yacht Home

And the onlookers likely don’t even realize just how unique of a sight they’re seeing. Home , which was delivered in 2017 , is the first Heesen Fast Displacement Hull Form with hybrid propulsion. She is one of a kind in the world, and on the charter market, as she prepares for her first spring charter season in the Bahamas and her first summer season in the West Mediterranean, as part of the Yacht-Zoo fleet.

164-foot Heesen Yacht Home

The propulsion system lets Home run in virtual silence around 10 knots, or climb above 16 knots in diesel mode. For charter clients, that makes shifting from Harbor A to Harbor B an exercise in trying to figure out whether the power plants are even turned on.

“The key is comfort,” French says. “We can move with virtual silence. It just slips through the water. You can move without anyone realizing it — it’s true. It’s only the generators that are on, and you can’t really hear them. They run electric motors, which turn the props, and that’s how we move. It’s obviously not as fast as with diesel, but it’s not like we’re moving particularly slowly. It’s not hampering us in any way.”

164-foot Heesen Superyacht

Charter clients also receive a sizable savings on fuel costs. According to Heesen, at 10 knots in hybrid mode , this superyacht’s fuel consumption is less than 12 gallons of fuel per hour.

On board, interior designer Cristiano Gatto worked with Heesen to create an experience of bringing the outdoors in. The design elements go beyond sole-to-ceiling windows and wide views; they also include connections between the outdoor and indoor spaces.

164-foot Heesen Superyacht

“The design is very clever,” French says. “You have these areas where you have the outdoor area, and then because of the use of space and windows and light, people can be inside in the air conditioning and still be interacting and feel like they’re part of the outdoor experience. The swim platform is one of those areas. It’s nothing I’ve seen before, and it genuinely works. Even people with relatively conservative tastes have come on board and said, ‘Wow, this is spectacular.’”

Another fan-favorite area, he says, is at the bow, where there are two elevated chairs.

“You sit on the chair facing aft, two people next to each other,” French says. “We then turn the chairs around, and you’re facing forward, probably 15 or 20 feet above the water. It’s silent, and you’re hovering — it’s like being on a helicopter over the water. The owner just thought it would be a totally unencumbered way to see the sea.”

Helping guests see the world in memorable ways is his goal for the entire Home charter program. Because the yacht has not chartered previously, French and the crew are open to trying just about anything clients can imagine doing — especially if it means positioning the yacht for views that others in her size range can’t achieve.

“Whether it’s the Pitons or Stromboli or Vesuvius,” he says, “we want to see about getting people there.”

Meet Yachtster, a Sporty 164-Foot Superyacht Concept With a Fold-Out Beach Club

A superyacht that toes the line between classic and contemporary is not an easy thing to achieve, but Hot Lab appears to have pulled it off.

The Italian studio has just unveiled a new 164-footer with a traditional, sporty silhouette that is sure to please purists. At the same time, the design incorporates an array of modern features that are now considered seafaring must-haves, according to Hot Lab’s head of design Enrico Lumini.

This Rolex Military Submariner Spent Decades in a Drawer. Now It Could Fetch up to $150,000 at Auction.

The concept , christened Yachtster, sports an open beach club at the rear that stretches over three levels. Accessible via glass doors on the lower level, the sprawling area provides direct access to the ocean for sunning or swimming. It’s also fitted with foldable wings on both sides that provide a little more space for lounging waterside with a cocktail in hand.

Another highlight is the yacht’s low bulwarks. This allows for unobstructed ocean views and better connects seafarers to their surroundings. The walkways also help create a sense of flow between the foredeck and the aft.

“We always want to let every guest onboard see what’s around them,” Lumini told Robb Report in an email.

Yachtster also offers plenty of large, open spaces for tenders and toys. The Milanese firm says this outdoor real estate can be customized with “any sort of amenities.” An open-air cinema or dancefloor, perhaps?

Elsewhere, the upper deck is equipped with an alfresco dining area and sun pads aft, along with a jacuzzi and a few more lounges forward. The main deck has another outdoor dining area with extra seating.

Inside, meanwhile, Yachtster can accommodate up to 12 guests across six cabins. As you would expect, prospective owners can tweak the layout and décor. They can also choose between a hybrid or electric propulsion system.

“Yachtster is the true, well-balanced, consistent yacht for real yachtsmen,” Lumini adds.

164 foot yacht

Victory Design ’s newest luxury yacht is straight fire.

Named after the Italian word for “fireball,” the Bolide 80 is designed to bring all the performance, speed and agility of a hypercar to the high seas. The 79-footer, which is currently being built in partnership with Italy’s Perisco Marine under the supervision of Eugenio Voltolina, marks the first model in Victory’s new  Bolide  series. The 164-foot flagship, known simply as the Bolide 170, will be presented at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show this week.

“These are true collector’s jewels, not serially but custom-built: each unit is unique and exclusive,” Victory’s founder Brunello Acampora said in a statement.

164 foot yacht

The Bolide 80 is a strong starting point for the range. The sleek hull, which was engineered in-house, will be made from lightweight carbon with custom reinforcements by Microtex and structural cores by Diab. Billed as a “hyper muscle yacht,” the newcomer will be powered by MAN diesel engines supplied by Ranieri & Tonissi that will be mated to a patented T-Drive by Flexitab and a TS propulsion system with composite flaps. The Bolide 80 will have a cruising speed of more than 55 knots and a thundering top speed of up to 75 knots, according to the studio.

The Bolide 170, meanwhile, will be available with either diesel or hybrid propulsion that will produce a top speed of 50 knots and 70 knots, respectively. The diesel version features a light alloy hull and a carbon-fiber superstructure, while the hybrid model will sport a composite hull. Both yachts will be fitted with innovative tech that reduces fuel consumption per mile by 50 percent compared to other vessels of the same length, according to Victory.

Taking cues from the great Italian coachbuilders, Victory says each vessel will be finished to the highest standards. The interiors, which were spearheaded by architect Stefano Faggioni, epitomize that classic “made in Italy” style with exposed carbon, fine leathers, soft marbles and meticulous stitching. The Bolide 170 will be equipped with four guest cabins, one owner’s suite and a large crew area, as well as a beach club with folding terraces, a large tender garage and one swimming pool that cascades into another.

“These boats are designed for true collectors and for those who love the thrill—which cannot be waived—of speed, while experiencing it with up-to-date means, in total safety and reducing environmental impact,” adds Acampora.

To ensure exclusivity, Victory said it will cap the number of units taken to build. The Bolide 80, for example, will be limited to just 10 examples.

Straight fire, indeed.

Said Kahn's 400-foot long superyacht Kismet charters for over $3 million per week

I haven’t met Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan yet. But, after touring his previous 313-foot-long superyacht that’s played host to numerous A-list celebrities at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show a few years back, and recently learning that his newly launched superyacht is 400-feet-long, it’s pretty obvious he likes to go big.

The interior for the 400-foot-long Kismet that charters for $3 million per week

And as you can see in these images, Khan’s new KISMET ( Cecil Wright sold his previous 313-foot-long KISMET last September and is the central charter agent for this one) that was built by Lürssen in Germany, has an exterior design by Nuvolari Lenard , and an interior design led by the Khan’s family working alongside Reymond Langton Design takes going big to a whole other level.

Actually, what makes KISMET even more opulent is the simple fact that eventhough it’s much, much longer than an American football field, it’s designed to pamper just 12 uber VIP ’s over the yacht’s six massive decks.

The owners suite aboard the 400-foot-long Kismet that charters for $3 million per week is opulent

In fact, the master suite spans two decks and features a large skylight and fireplace, and his and hers bathrooms and dressing rooms. The private hot tub and sunbathing area forward and the private staircase leading up to a spectacular office simply must be seen to be believed.

The interior for the 400-foot-long Kismet that charters for $3 million per week is massive

The guest cabins also offer an oasis of comfort and serenity with the flexibility to accommodate varying preferences. Meanwhile, the yacht’s wellness and beauty areas include a Balinese-inspired spa with hammam, sauna, and cryotherapy chamber to a dedicated gym and yoga studio with a juice bar, both with opening sea terraces. In addition, there is a further treatment room with a massage table, waterfall shower and chromotherapy bathtub. For red carpet ready evenings, the yacht has two hair and beauty rooms, one in the spa area and another in the owner’s suite.

The outdoor cinema aboard the 400-foot-long Kismet that charters for $3 million per week

Entertainment areas include a large outdoor cinema on the bridge deck and a Nemo cinema on the lower deck with a 150-inch drop-down TV and underwater viewing lounge. Of course there’s also a DJ station overhanging the bridge deck aft, a Boganyi grand piano on the upper deck and four bars, including a champagne bar and wine cellar room.

As you’d expect, the yacht also boasts a full suite of water sports toys including: Jet Skis, SeaBobs, e-foils, Flitescooters, an Aquaglide floating deck and inflatable slide, dive gear and oh, by-the-way, there’s a basketball and pickleball court forward of the master cabin on the foredeck.

Sounds amazing, right? It is. And all of that over-the-top luxury can be yours for approximately $3,000,000 per week via Cecil Wright . And I bet KISMET ’s summer season is close to be fully booked already!

Azimut Grande 44M Superyacht

What if you’re a boatbuilder and publicly draw a line in the sand to not build past a certain length? But then a new design comes along that is so compelling that you just have to break your own rule.

At Palm Beach, the yacht’s designers showed initial renderings of the largest-ever Azimut. Marijana Radovic and Marco Bonelli of Milan-based m2atelier were responsible for the interior and Alberto Mancini did the exterior.

Azimut Grande 44M

Mancini, a veteran yacht designer, told Robb Report that this was only the second yacht of hundreds in his career where he was given carte blanche over the exterior, so it ended up morphing past 40 meters into the Grande 44M. Typically, he said, the shipyard gets involved with the details of the design, and most owners want to have a say, so most designs end up as compromises. This time, says Mancini, Azimut not only left him alone, but let him go wild.

And he did.

The yacht itself is revolutionary in some ways, with a 550-square-foot upper deck that can be converted into an owner’s space—the owner’s “enclave”—with two primary suites and a forward glassed-in area that works as an office or dining room, with the world’s best view. Its four stern decks are tiered, emphasizing large exterior spaces and easy movement between the interior and exterior spaces.

Azimut 44M Grande

Then there’s the 12-person dining table on the aft cockpit above a swimming pool with a transparent window looking out over the ocean. This optical illusion is one of several wow factors, but mostly the yacht overwhelms with quiet luxury.

Radovic and Bonelli said their goal was to create a simple interior with muted tones and splashes of color, as part of the Azimut DNA. The pair are not yacht designers, so brought a new approach from their residential architecture and private clubs to the design.

“We wanted to clean up the space and enhance it, not overwhelm it,” said Radovic. “For instance, we designed the dining table to be a reflection of the pool, and in every case, we made sure to follow what was happening on the exterior.”

Bonelli added that the goal was to “enhance the flow” between the interior and exterior. “It seems simple, but there’s a lot of effort to finding that balance,” he said.

The shipyard also focused on the technical components of the build, claiming that it will produce 10 to 30 percent fewer fuel emissions than yachts of the same size and displacement. Federico Ferrante, president of Azimut Americas, said the 44M will have a hydrodynamic wing under the dual-mode hull that provides better fuel efficiency at the same speeds. “It also reduces the pitch—the annoying movement of the boat—and smooths out the wake,” said Ferrante.

The 44M also has lithium batteries that allow it to run the boat’s hotel (non-propulsion) load for 4 hours during the day and eight hours at night, at anchor. The vessel also has two electric generators in the shafts that recharge the batteries when under way. “Most yachts typically run their diesel generators 24/7, which causes lots of noise, emissions and cost,” said Ferrante. “This system cuts that in half.”

The 44M’s molds are being constructed at Azimut’s Livornia shipyard in preparation for the first build. The first five units have been sold to current Azimut owners.
