It requires critical thinking, as well as sound and valid arguments (see Chapter 25) that acknowledge and analyse arguments both for and against any given topic, plus discursive essay writing appeals to reason, not emotions or opinions. While it may draw some tentative conclusions, based on evidence, the main aim of a discursive essay is to inform the reader of the key arguments and allow them to arrive at their own conclusion.

The writer needs to research the topic thoroughly to present more than one perspective and should check their own biases and assumptions through critical reflection (see Chapter 30).

Unlike persuasive writing, the writer does not need to have knowledge of the audience, though should write using academic tone and language (see Chapter 20).

Choose Your Topic Carefully

A basic guide to choosing an assignment topic is available in Chapter 23, however choosing a topic for a discursive essay means considering more than one perspective. Not only do you need to find information about the topic via academic sources, you need to be able to construct a worthwhile discussion, moving from idea to idea. Therefore, more forward planning is required. The following are decisions that need to be considered when choosing a discursive essay topic:

Seems too good to be true, yet it is perfect for my assignment. I would have to then find arguments AGAINST everything in the article that supports transitioning suburbs to solar power. I would have to challenge the cost-effectiveness, the storage, and the environmental impact study. Now, all of a sudden my task just became much more challenging.
There may be vast numbers of journal articles written about your topic, but consider how relevant they may be to your tentative thesis statement. Write the Thesis Statement

The concept of a thesis statement was introduced in Chapter 21. The information below relates specifically to a discursive essay thesis statement.

As noted in the introduction to this chapter, the discursive essay should not take a stance and therefore the thesis statement must also impartially indicate more than one perspective. The goal is to present both sides of an argument equally and allow the reader to make an informed and well-reasoned choice after providing supporting evidence for each side of the argument.

Sample thesis statements: Solar energy is a cost -effective solution to burning fossil fuels for electricity , however lower income families cannot afford the installation costs .

Some studies indicate that teacher comments written in red may have no effect on students’ emotions , however other studies suggest that seeing red ink on papers could cause some students unnecessary stress. [1]

According to social justice principles, education should be available to all , yet historically, the intellectually and physically impaired may have been exempt from participation due to their supposed inability to learn. [2]

This is where your pros and cons list comes into play. For each pro, or positive statement you make, about your topic, create an equivalent con, or negative statement and this will enable you to arrive at two opposing assertions – the claim and counter claim.

While there may be multiple arguments or perspectives related to your essay topic, it is important that you match each claim with a counter-claim. This applies to the thesis statement and each supporting argument within the body paragraphs of the essay.

It is not just a matter of agreeing or disagreeing. A neutral tone is crucial. Do not include positive or negative leading statements, such as “It is undeniable that…” or “One should not accept the view that…”. You are NOT attempting to persuade the reader to choose one viewpoint over another.

Leading statements / language will be discussed further, in class, within term three of the Academic English course.

Thesis Structure:

Note the two sides (indicated in green and orange)
Note the use of tentative language: “Some studies”, “may have”, “could cause”, “some students”
As the thesis is yet to be discussed in-depth, and you are not an expert in the field, do not use definitive language
The statement is also one sentence, with a “pivot point” in the middle, with a comma and signposting to indicate a contradictory perspective (in black). Other examples include, nevertheless, though, although, regardless, yet, albeit. DO NOT use the word “but” as it lacks academic tone. Some signposts (e.g., although, though, while) may be placed at the start of the two clauses rather than in the middle – just remember the comma, for example, “While some studies suggest solar energy is cost-effective, other critical research questions its affordability.”
Also note that it is based on preliminary research and not opinion: “some studies”, “other studies”, “according to social justice principles”, “critical research”.

Claims and Counter Claims

NOTE: Please do not confuse the words ‘claim’ and ‘counter-claim’ with moral or value judgements about right/wrong, good/bad, successful/unsuccessful, or the like. The term ‘claim’ simply refers to the first position or argument you put forward (whether for or against), and ‘counter-claim’ is the alternate position or argument.

In a discursive essay the goal is to present both sides equally and then draw some tentative conclusions based on the evidence presented.

To formulate your claims and counter claims, write a list of pros and cons.
For each pro there should be a corresponding con.
Three sets of pros and cons will be required for your discursive essay. One set for each body paragraph. These become your claims and counter claims.
For a longer essay, you would need further claims and counter claims.
Some instructors prefer students to keep the pros and cons in the same order across the body paragraphs. Each paragraph would then have a pro followed by a con or else a con followed by a pro. The order should align with your thesis; if the thesis gives a pro view of the topic followed by a negative view (con) then the paragraphs should also start with the pro and follow with the con, or else vice versa. If not aligned and consistent, the reader may easily become confused as the argument proceeds. Ask your teacher if this is a requirement for your assessment.

Use previous chapters to explore your chosen topic through concept mapping (Chapter 18) and essay outlining (Chapter 19), with one variance; you must include your proposed claims and counter claims in your proposed paragraph structures. What follows is a generic model for a discursive essay. The following Chapter 27 will examine this in further details.

Sample Discursive Essay Outline

The paragraphs are continuous; the dot-points are only meant to indicate content.

Essay outline (including 3 controlling ideas)

Body Paragraphs X 3 (Elaboration and evidence will be more than one sentence, though the topic, claim and counter claim should be succinct)

T opic sentence, including 1/3 controlling ideas (the topic remains the same throughout the entire essay; it is the controlling idea that changes)
A claim/assertion about the controlling idea
E laboration – more information about the claim
E vidence -academic research (Don’t forget to tell the reader how / why the evidence supports the claim. Be explicit in your E valuation rather than assuming the connection is obvious to the reader)
A counter claim (remember it must be COUNTER to the claim you made, not about something different)
E laboration – more information about the counter claim
E vidence – academic research (Don’t forget to tell the reader how / why the evidence supports the claim. Be explicit in your E valuation rather than assuming the connection is obvious to the reader)
Concluding sentence – L inks back to the topic and/or the next controlling idea in the following paragraph

Mirror the introduction. The essay outline should have stated the plan for the essay – “This essay will discuss…”, therefore the conclusion should identify that this has been fulfilled, “This essay has discussed…”, plus summarise the controlling ideas and key arguments. ONLY draw tentative conclusions BOTH for and against, allowing the reader to make up their own mind about the topic. Also remember to re-state the thesis in the conclusion. If it is part of the marking criteria, you should also include a recommendation or prediction about the future use or cost/benefit of the chosen topic/concept.

A word of warning, many students fall into the generic realm of stating that there should be further research on their topic or in the field of study. This is a gross statement of the obvious as all academia is ongoing. Try to be more practical with your recommendations and also think about who would instigate them and where the funding might come from.

To conclude, we can say that there are more problems due to technological advancements than benefits.

Analysis of the structure of the essay:

Some people argue that technological inventions, such as smartphones, are making people socially less interactive. Discuss both views.

In the current era, you can see people spending more time on smartphones rather than socializing. Wherever you go, you can see people putting their heads down looking into their smartphones and not bothering about what is going on around them. This has become a new trend. As there are a lot of features that are available in smartphones, an individual is not able to stay away from it even for a second. Some features of smartphones are just like the personal computer and they provide a high level of entertainment and can be carried along wherever we go. This essay helps others to understand how smartphone technology impacts society.

The main advantage of a smartphone is that it has made communication easier and quicker. Now you can speak to any of your friends or relatives, in any part of the world. Not only that, but they can also share personal messages, photos, videos through social media.

Along with the benefits, there are also some adverse effects of smartphone addiction on society. The children are not socially active. They sit inside four walls playing games on smartphones and have distanced themselves from society. Even, adults are busy chatting with their friends on social networking sites and have become socially inactive. Even get-togethers have become less. People like to chat on social media more than talking face to face. Even if there are get-togethers, people will be busy with their smartphones instead of interacting with each other. Parents nowadays are busy with smartphones and they fail to attend to their children. Hence the children will be left alone.

To conclude, we can say that smartphones along with its advantages, have also increased the social gap and kept us far from each other.

Many things that used to be done at home by hands are now being done by machines. Discuss.

Technology is growing day by day. Many household works that were done manually earlier have been replaced by machines and can be completed automatically. This development has benefitted people a lot. This essay will explain how technology has helped people in different ways at home.

Man has invented many machines which can do most of the household work automatically such as; dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, the washing machine and so on. With the invention of these machines, women get a lot of leisure. And also this advancement has helped women in improving their standard of living. They will get more time to focus on their career.

Along with the advantages there are also some disadvantages that go with the situation. By the invention of different types of machinery, people are fully dependent on them. Previously, people used to do all the household work manually and stayed fit. But the advancement in technology has made people lazy. There is no physical involvement in household activities

To sum up, technology has made people more dependent on machines for household activities. Also, the advantage is that women can invest more time more on their careers and children rather than doing household chores.

Review: Is technology a blessing or a curse?

The Song of the Earth: Heidegger and the Grounds of the History of Being by Michael Haar, Indiana University Press, pp 192, £25

Michael Haar, professor of contemporary philosophy at the University of Paris, struggles in The Song of the Earth with the ancient problem of being. Metaphysics is traditionally divided into epistemology (what and how we know) and ontology (what sort of beings there are). Following Martin Heidegger and Georg Hegel, Haar regards ontology as more important and defines truth as the revelation of being. Applying this theory of truth to art, Haar maintains that a work of art reveals aspects of the Earth that would otherwise remain hidden, and he draws many fine examples from the poetry of Friedrich Holderlin to illustrate this.

In Britain, Heidegger is often referred to as a horrible example of how senseless metaphysics can become. Rudolf Carnap (one of the founders of logical positivism) used to quote from Heidegger to illustrate this: ‘Nihilation is neither an annihilation of what-is, nor does it spring from negation . . . nothing annihilates itself.’ To the untutored it must seem that something has gone very wrong here. Heidegger, it has been said, was trying to break out of stock categories, but if one feels that one understands the text one also wonders whether, like the Rorschach ink-blot test, the meaning comes from oneself rather than from the text. Haar’s book is sometimes a recapitulation of this experience, but some things are clear enough.

A pervasive assumption in the book is that the Earth is somehow a place that we humans could not do without, that we could never be at home anywhere else in the Universe, but technology erects a barrier between us and the Earth. The value of art is that it helps to connect us with the Earth by making it manifest. This reveals the unfortunate reactionary and parochial attitude behind this book.

Haar supports the natural, but he fails to see that the drives behind technology – people’s curiosity, exploration and desire to control – could not be more natural. They are, after all, part of our evolutionary heritage. As Konrad Lorenz, the famous ethologist, shows in Behind the Mirror, these characteristics become increasingly evident as we look along the phylogenetic series leading to Homo sapiens sapiens.

Another aspect of this antitechnology stance is Haar’s assertion that technology threatens the Earth because ‘When the world is reduced to a network of interchangeable connections, there are truly no longer any subjects who face objects, but only gigantic circulations of energy, products, information and consumption.’ This is the problem of alienation. What all writers on alienation since Marx have taken for granted was that alienation was both bad and avoidable.

Friedrich Hayek, the Nobel prizewinning economist, discusses the emergence of the extended society of worldwide markets in his book Fatal Conceit. He predicts that there will always be a tension between our instinctive need for the closeness and familiarity of the tribal-like grouping, in which each person knows every other individual and cooperates out of altruistic concern, and the needs of the worldwide system of cooperation between millions of individuals who neither know each other nor could know each other. Furthermore, in Unfathomed Knowledge, Unmeasured Wealth, William Bartley points out that the alienation of our products – the fact that we cannot fully predict or control what will happen to them once we have made them – is unavoidable.

The potential of any theoretically interpretable product, whether a theory or an invention, is literally infinite and therefore cannot be completely surveyed by the producer. Who could have seen all the developments predicated on Einstein’s theory or the wheel? Alienation is a universal phenomenon, not just of the so-called epoch of capitalism.

This is arguably a far more profound and informative analysis of truth than the Heideggerian idea that truth is simply the self-disclosure of being. One might at least think it relevant to Haar’s project. The fact is, much truth is not only manifest, but unfathomable. But the same applies to works of art. Paintings, sculpture, music and poems have meaning for us because of a tradition of interpretations within which a person makes his or her own limited and different interpretation. A composer may be pleasantly astonished by an unforeseeable variation in the performance of his score, for example, variations of tempo or instruments.

Teens Spend Roughly Nine Hours a Day on Technology!?

Everyone has seen the moody, withdrawn teenager with music blasting out of their white earbuds, or the girl rapidly texting on her smartphone. The youth of today are constantly immersed in technological advancements that promote non-stop communication and instant gratification, whether through phones, gaming systems, laptops, or iPods. However, are these advancements a good thing? Of course, no one can really give you a straight answer. It depends on who you ask, for instance, I'm sure that the creators of social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter will convince you that technology is the best thing that has ever happened to the world, but to a victim of cyberbullying, their opinion would massively differ. Personally, I believe that the growth of technology has severely impacted the social interactions of young people. Individuals are now isolated from reality, lack face-to-face communication, and can be constantly distracted by their devices.

Even now, as I am writing this article, several drafts and plans have been made prior to this on various devices that I own: my laptop, phone, iPad to name a few. In addition, after I re-read my work, I will send it by email to get approval for it to be published, and then it will be printed in this exact magazine. The point is that every step involved in creating this article has required some sort of technology to push it along. And this is exactly what is happening to teens. With the issues of peer pressure and an increase in young people struggling to find their own identities, teens tend to feel the need to have something to push them along. Young people usually answer the question, 'who am I?' during adolescence. Teenagers solidify their identities during adolescence, as they begin to more fully understand their personalities, values, needs, and emotions. This journey often happens as they interact within their social bubbles. Accelerated by technology, the world has expanded dramatically for teenagers. No longer is it 'it's what's on the inside that counts' on the internet, but it's 'how will others look at me?' and 'what filter can I add to get as many likes as I can on this Instagram picture?' It all sounds a bit ridiculous when laid out like this, but to teens, these thoughts aren't uncommon.

A startling statistic, courtesy of by the non-profit group Common Sense Media: Teens are spending nearly nine hours a day consuming media. Think about this statistic next time you see a child or a teenager on an electronic device. The numbers surrounding technology keep rising, and research is starting to figure out that this is not healthy! Indeed, this amount of technology consumption is scary to me, but you might shrug and ask, 'Why?' For healthy development to occur, teenagers must experience real-life peer friendships and positive relationships with not only people their age, but adults too. They must overcome challenges and obstacles in the real world, learn from mistakes, and reflect on the person they hope to become. If they're devoting almost nine hours to technology, is there enough time left to make the human connections necessary for positive development?

Technology, although harmless at first sight, presents all sorts of dangers that I would never have even thought about before researching this topic using, as you might have guessed, the internet. You have all heard of drinking and driving, but in today's society, a more pressing threat appears to be texting and driving. I'll give you an example of just how dangerous this can be. If you're driving at eighty kilometres per hour, the average speed limit for local and regional roads in Ireland, and if you look down at your phone for five seconds, you have just driven the length on an entire football field completely blind. Puts things in perspective, doesn't it? Yet despite all this, according to an AAA poll, 94% of teen drivers acknowledge the dangers of texting and driving, but 35% admitted to doing it anyway. It's not only physical dangers like this, but more subtle ones too. Technology changes the way young adults think and feel, for instance, while video games may condition the brain to pay attention to multiple stimuli, they can also lead to distraction and decreased memory. Teenagers who always use search engines may become very good at finding information-but not very good at remembering it. Furthermore, young people who use too much technology may not have enough opportunities to use their imagination or to read and expand their vocabulary.

Social media is an immense part of technology. You can connect with practically anyone, anywhere, and even though this premise has existed for years, it never ceases to amaze me. Sure, it is easier than ever to connect with friends and family, but what about the people we don't know? The way teenagers meet strangers on the internet is not viewed the same as meeting a stranger on the street. Going up to someone you walk past and starting a conversation would instantly title you an odd person, however, once under the 'safety-net' of the internet; this behaviour is apparently suddenly okay. This barely scrapes the surface of the true motive behind social networks. The largest social network site, Facebook, has captivated 1.86 billion people, a quarter of the world's population! As a recent article from The Observer notes, "There is something chilling in Zuckerberg's failure to recognise that Facebook is already a for-profit form of social infrastructure, with immense and unprecedented power over our lives. And in making its profit, Facebook creates social value, yes, but also social harm," Although written more eloquently, our points are the same. There seems to be a much darker and damaging layer to technology that creators of sites like this are willing to use in order to exploit us. And who are the most vulnerable to this? That's right, children and young people.

In short, technology definitely makes our lives easier. Students and young adults today have tremendous opportunities to learn and to connect by using it, but with each advantage comes a potential cost. Technology can never be placed above the health, mental or physical, of ourselves or our future generations. When we understand those costs and can minimise them, we can try our best to keep the use of technology positive.

Historically, big cities were always centers of commerce and economic growth, offering greater security and job opportunities. To this day, leaving the desperation of the countryside for the success of a huge metropolis is a popular trope in culture and media. Although it is common to romanticize the lifestyle of big city dwellers, living in a large urban area comes at a high cost. Metropolitan residents do indeed enjoy a tremendous amount of career and quality of life advantages; however, it is not a secret that living in big cities is often associated with a lack of meaningful interpersonal interactions.

On the one hand, big city life offers excellent opportunities for economic growth. According to Loschiavo (2021), “urban concentration enhances productivity, which, in turn, spurs national economic growth” (p. 5). Due to their sheer massiveness, big metropolitan areas provide their inhabitants with a greater number of open vacancies and increased competitive salaries. In addition, dwellers of such cities benefit from easy access to various quality-of-life services, such as different specialty stores, pharmacies, hospitals, restaurants, and entertainment options. Massive city residents enjoy the best medical service and numerous means of mass transportation.

On the other hand, big city dwellers suffer from a lack of meaningful interpersonal relationships. Loschiavo (2021) claims that “big-city dwellers are exposed to unceasing external contacts with numbers of persons that are nevertheless impersonal and transitory” (p. 10). According to his research, people in larger cities tend to create relationships to meet their needs rather than form meaningful mutual connections. Moreover, a competitive environment in areas of large economic growth contributes to the dissolution of cooperation and thus leads to increased residents’ unhappiness.

In conclusion, life in a big city has advantages and disadvantages. Large urban areas offer better job opportunities and easy access to the best possible medicine, transport, and leisure. However, the competitive and transitory nature of metropolises contributes to the decadence of cooperation and interpersonal relationships. Although big cities offer numerous career-related opportunities, those aspiring to move there must be prepared for lack of satisfaction in their personal life.

On a crisp Saturday morning that screamed for adventure, a former tin can factory in North Kansas City, Mo., thrummed with the sound of young people climbing, sliding, spinning, jumping, exploring and reading.

Yes, reading.

If you think this is a silent activity, you haven’t spent time in a first grade classroom. And if you think all indoor destinations for young people are sticky, smelly, depressing hellholes, check your assumptions at the unmarked front door.

Welcome to the Rabbit Hole, a brand-new, decade-in-the-making museum of children’s literature founded by the only people with the stamina for such a feat: former bookstore owners. Pete Cowdin and Deb Pettid are long-married artists who share the bullish determination of the Little Red Hen. They’ve transformed the hulking old building into a series of settings lifted straight from the pages of beloved picture books.

Before we get into what the Rabbit Hole is, here’s what it isn’t: a place with touch screens, a ball pit, inscrutable plaques, velvet ropes, a cloying soundtrack or adults in costumes. It doesn’t smell like graham crackers, apple juice or worse (yet). At $16 per person over 2 years old, it also isn’t cheap.

During opening weekend on March 16, the museum was a hive of freckles and gap toothed grins, with visitors ranging in age from newborn to well seasoned. Cries of “Look up here!,” “There’s a path we need to take!” and “There’s Good Dog Carl !” created a pleasant pandemonium. For every child galloping into the 30,000 square foot space, there was an adult hellbent on documenting the moment.

Did you ever have to make a shoe box diorama about your favorite book? If so, you might remember classmates who constructed move-in ready mini kingdoms kitted out with gingham curtains, clothespin people and actual pieces of spaghetti.

Cowdin, Pettid and their team are those students, all grown up.

The main floor of the Rabbit Hole consists of 40 book-themed dioramas blown up to life-size and arranged, Ikea showroom-style, in a space the size of two hockey rinks. The one inspired by John Steptoe’s “ Uptown ” features a pressed tin ceiling, a faux stained-glass window and a jukebox. In the great green room from “ Goodnight Moon ,” you can pick up an old-fashioned phone and hear the illustrator’s son reading the story.

One fictional world blends into the next, allowing characters to rub shoulders in real life just as they do on a shelf. Visitors slid down the pole in “The Fire Cat,” slithered into the gullet of the boa constrictor in “ Where the Sidewalk Ends ” and lounged in a faux bubble bath in “ Harry the Dirty Dog .” There are plenty of familiar faces — Madeline , Strega Nona , Babar — but just as many areas dedicated to worthy titles that don’t feature household names, including “ Crow Boy ,” “ Sam and the Tigers ,” “ Gladiola Garden ” and “ The Zabajaba Jungle .”

Emma Miller, a first-grade teacher, said, “So many of these are books I use in my classroom. It’s immersive and beautiful. I’m overwhelmed.”

As her toddler bolted toward “ Frog and Toad ,” Taylar Brown said, “We love opportunities to explore different sensory things for Mason. He has autism so this is a perfect place for him to find little hiding holes.”

A gaggle of boys reclined on a bean bag in “ Caps for Sale ,” passing around a copy of the book. Identical twins sounded out “ Bread and Jam for Frances ” on the pink rug in the badger’s house. A 3-year-old visiting for the second time listened to her grandfather reading “The Tawny Scrawny Lion.”

Tomy Tran, a father of three from Oklahoma, said, “I’ve been to some of these indoor places and it’s more like a jungle gym. Here, my kids will go into the area, pick up the book and actually start reading it as if they’re in the story.”

All the titles scattered around the museum are available for purchase at the Lucky Rabbit, a bookstore arranged around a cozy amphitheater. Pettid and Cowdin estimate that they’ve sold one book per visitor, with around 650 guests per day following the pink bunny tracks from the parking lot.

Once upon a time, Cowdin and Pettid owned the Reading Reptile, a Kansas City institution known not just for its children’s books but also for its literary installations. When Dav Pilkey came to town, Pettid and Cowdin welcomed him by making a three-and-a-half foot papier-mâché Captain Underpants. Young customers pitched in to build Tooth-Gnasher Superflash or the bread airplane from “In the Night Kitchen.”

One of the store’s devotees was Meg McMath, who continued to visit through college, long after she’d outgrown its offerings (and its chairs). Now 36, McMath traveled from Austin, Texas with her husband and six-month-old son to see the Rabbit Hole. “I’ve cried a few times,” she said.

The Reading Reptile weathered Barnes & Noble superstores and Amazon. Then came “the Harry Potter effect,” Pettid said, “where all of a sudden adults wanted kids to go from picture books to thick chapter books. They skipped from here to there; there was so much they were missing.”

As parents fell under the sway of reading lists for “gifted” kids, story time became yet another proving ground.

“It totally deformed the reading experience,” Cowdin said. Not to mention the scourge of every bookstore: surreptitious photo-snappers who later shopped online.

In 2016, Cowdin and Pettid closed the Reptile to focus on the Rabbit Hole, an idea they’d been percolating for years. They hoped it would be a way to spread the organic bookworm spirit they’d instilled in their five children while dialing up representation for readers who had trouble finding characters who looked like them. The museum would celebrate classics, forgotten gems and quality newcomers. How hard could it be?

Cowdin and Pettid had no experience in the nonprofit world. They knew nothing about fund-raising or construction. They’re ideas people, glass half full types, idealists but also stubborn visionaries. They didn’t want to hand their “dream” — a word they say in quotes — to consultants who knew little about children’s books. Along the way, board members resigned. Their kids grew up. Covid descended. A tree fell on their house and they had to live elsewhere for a year. “I literally have told Pete I quit 20 times,” Pettid said.

“It has not always been pleasant,” Cowdin said. “But it was just like, OK, we’re going to do this and then we’re going to figure out how to do it. And then we just kept figuring it out.”

Little by little, chugging along like “ The Little Engine That Could ,” they raised $15 million and assembled a board who embraced their vision and commitment to Kansas City. They made a wish list of books — “Every ethnicity. Every gender. Every publisher,” Pettid said — and met with rights departments and authors’ estates about acquiring permissions. Most were receptive; some weren’t. (They now have rights to more than 70 titles.)

“A lot of people think a children’s bookstore is very cute,” Pettid said. “They have a small mind for children’s culture. That’s why we had to buy this building.”

For $2 million, they bought the factory from Robert Riccardi, an architect whose family operated a beverage distribution business there for two decades. His firm, Multistudio, worked with Cowdin and Pettid to reimagine the space, which sits on an industrial corner bordered by train tracks, highways and skyline views.

Cowdin and Pettid started experimenting with layouts. Eventually they hired 39 staff members, including 21 full-time artists and fabricators who made everything in the museum from some combination of steel, wood, foam, concrete and papier-mâché.

“My parents are movers and shakers,” Gloria Cowdin said. She’s the middle of the five siblings, named after Frances the badger’s sister — and, yes, that’s her voice reading inside the exhibit. “There’s never been something they’ve wanted to achieve that they haven’t made happen, no matter how crazy.”

During a sneak peek in December, it was hard to imagine how this semi-construction zone would coalesce into a museum. The 22,000 square foot fabrication section was abuzz with drills and saws. A whiteboard showed assembly diagrams and punch lists. (Under “Random jobs,” someone had jotted, “Write Christmas songs.”) The entryway and lower level — known as the grotto and the burrow — were warrens of scaffolding and machinery.

But there were pockets of calm. Kelli Harrod worked on a fresco of trees outside the “ Blueberries for Sal ” kitchen, unfazed by the hubbub. In two years as lead painter, she’d witnessed the Rabbit Hole’s steady growth.

“I remember painting the ‘ Pérez and Martina ’ house before there was insulation,” Harrod said. “I was bundled up in hats, gloves and coats, making sure my hands didn’t shake.”

Leigh Rosser was similarly nonplused while describing his biggest challenge as design fabrication lead. Problem: How to get a dragon and a cloud to fly above a grand staircase in “ My Father’s Dragon .” Solution: “It’s really simple, conceptually” — it didn’t sound simple — “but we’re dealing with weight in the thousands of pounds, mounted up high. We make up things that haven’t been done before, or at least that I’m not aware of.”

Attention to detail extends to floor-bound exhibits. The utensil drawer in “Blueberries for Sal” holds Pete Cowdin’s mother’s egg whisk alongside a jar containing a baby tooth that belonged to Cowdin and Pettid’s oldest daughter, Sally. The tooth is a wink at “ One Morning in Maine ,” an earlier Robert McCloskey book involving a wiggly bicuspid — or was it a molar? If dental records are available, Cowdin and Pettid have consulted them for accuracy.

“With Pete and Deb, it’s about trying to picture what they’re seeing in their minds,” said Brian Selznick , a longtime friend who helped stock the shelves in the Lucky Rabbit. He’s the author of “ The Invention of Hugo Cabret ,” among many other books.

Three months ago, the grotto looked like a desert rock formation studded with pink Chiclets. The burrow, home of Fox Rabbit, the museum’s eponymous mascot, was dark except for sparks blasting from a soldering iron. The floor was covered with tiny metal letters reclaimed from a newly-renovated donor wall at a local museum.

Cowdin and Pettid proudly explained their works-in-progress; these were the parts of the museum that blossomed from seed in their imaginations. But to the naked eye, they had the charm of a bulkhead door leading to a scary basement.

When the museum opened to the public, the grotto and the burrow suddenly made sense. The pink Chiclets are books, more than 3000 of them — molded in silicone, cast in resin — incorporated into the walls, the stairs and the floor. They vary from an inch-and-a-half to three inches thick. As visitors descend into the Rabbit Hole, they can run their fingers over the edges of petrified volumes. They can clamber over rock formations that include layers of books. Or they can curl up and read.

Dennis Butt, another longtime Rabbit Hole employee, molded 92 donated books into the mix, including his own copies of “ The Hobbit ” and “ The Lord of the Rings .” He said, “They’re a little piece of me.”

As for the metal letters, they’re pressed into the walls of a blue-lit tunnel leading up a ramp to the first floor. They spell the first lines of 141 books, including “ Charlotte’s Web ,” “Devil in the Drain” and “ Martha Speaks .” Some were easier to decipher than others, but “Mashed potatoes are to give everybody enough” jumped out. It called to mind another line from “A Hole is to Dig,” Ruth Krauss’s book of first definitions (illustrated by a young Maurice Sendak ): “The world is so you have something to stand on.”

At the Rabbit Hole, books are so you have something to stand on. They’re the bedrock and the foundation; they’re the solid ground.

Cowdin and Pettid have plans to expand into three more floors, adding exhibit space, a print shop, a story lab, a resource library and discovery galleries. An Automat-style cafeteria and George and Martha -themed party and craft room will open soon. A rooftop bar is also in the works.

Of course, museum life isn’t all happily ever after. Certain visitors whined, whinged and wept, especially as they approached the exit. One weary adult said, “Charlie, we did it all.”

Then, “Charlie, it’s time to go.”

And finally, “Fine, Charlie, we’re leaving you here.” Cue hysteria.

But the moral of this story — and the point of the museum, and maybe the point of reading, depending on who you share books with — crystallized in a quiet moment in the great green room. A boy in a Chiefs Super Bowl T-shirt pretended to fall asleep beneath a fleecy blanket. Before closing his eyes, he said, “Goodnight, Grandma. Love you to the moon.”
