The Extinction in Biodiversity

Due to human activities, numerous varieties of animals go extinct each year. Western Black Rhinoceros, Dodo, Tasmanian tiger, Golden Toad, Woolly Mammoth, Caribbean Monk Seal, Ivory-billed Woodpecker, and Japanese Sea Lion are some of the species of animals that have gone extinct.

Lemur, Mountain Gorilla, Vaquita, Sea Turtles, Amur Leopard, and Tiger are some of the species that are on the verge of extinction. Apart from these many species of plants and trees including Lepidodendron, Araucaria Mirabilis, Wood Cycad and Kokia Cookie have gone extinct and many species are endangered.

Need to Conserve Biodiversity

Earth is a beautiful planet which has given us many things which occur naturally. Natural resources, rivers, valleys , oceans, different species of animals and beautiful varieties of plants and trees are among some of these.

In today’s world, we are busy developing our surroundings and spoiling our beautiful environment. Today, we have exploited most of the things that were available abundantly in nature. Thus, there arises a need to conserve these natural things. Among other things, there is a serious need for the conservation of biodiversity.

Importance of Conservation of Biodiversity

Conservation of biodiversity is important for many reasons. Here are some of the main reasons to conserve biodiversity:

  • Process of Food Chain: Different species of animals and plants serve as the source of food for other animals and living organisms. Thus, conserving biodiversity help to keep the food chain among the living organisms.
  • Nutritional Needs: The decline in the variety of plants and animals would mean the decline in the variety of food we eat. So, this is likely to result in nutritional deficiencies.
  • Cleaner Air: Plants and trees have a greater ability to purify the air and keep the atmosphere clean. As there is a decrease in the number and types of trees and plants, it impacts the quality of air in a negative way.
  • Better Cultivation of Crops:   Fertility of soil is maintained by many insects, organisms and microorganisms work on different levels. So we have to maintain the level of microorganism which is better for the cultivation of crops.
  • For Medical Reason s: For making different medicines many species of trees and plants are used so as to cure various diseases.

Methods to Conserve Biodiversity

Methods that can help in the conservation of biodiversity are

  • Control Population: The greater the population the higher the needs which would result in further exploitation of flora and fauna and decline in biodiversity. For the conservation of biodiversity, we have to control the human population and allow other species of plants and animals to replenish on our planet.
  • Control Pollution: The changing climate, deteriorating air quality and the growing amount of pollution on land and water bodies are leading to different types of diseases in many. It is essential to reduce the activities leading to pollution so as to conserve biodiversity.
  • Reduce Deforestation: Due to deforestation, there is the loss of habitat. Due to this reason, wild animals are unable to survive in the new environment and die.
  • Avoid Wastage: We need to understand that natural resources are not only essential for us but are also vital for the survival of other species. We must thus utilize only as much as we require them so that these remain available in abundance in nature for future use.
  • Spread Awareness: Apart from this, one of the best methods to conserve biodiversity is by spreading awareness. The government can do so at a bigger level. While we can spread awareness by word of mouth and through social media.

Conservation of biodiversity is of utmost importance. We must all make efforts to conserve biodiversity rather than contributing towards its declination. Thus, the richness of biodiversity is essential for the survival of living beings on Earth.

Biodiversity Essay

Broadly speaking, biodiversity, also known as biological diversity, refers to various types of plants and animals on Earth. The process of continuous biodiversity conservation is essential right now. A greater level of biodiversity is necessary to maintain the harmony of the natural environment. Here are a few sample essays on biodiversity.

100 Words Essay On Biodiversity

200 words essay on biodiversity, 500 words essay on biodiversity.

Biodiversity Essay

The term "biodiversity" is used to describe the variety of plants, animals, and other species found in an environment. All of them have a significant impact on preserving the planet's healthy ecosystem. In order to sustain the health of the ecosystem and human life, it is critical to maintain a high degree of biodiversity.

However, maintaining biodiversity is getting more challenging due to the increasing air, water, and land pollution on our planet. A number of plant and animal species have gone extinct as a result of the quick environmental changes brought on by the aforementioned causes of biodiversity loss.

By encouraging individuals to adopt more environmentally friendly behaviours and practises and to build a more peaceful and sympathetic relationship with the environment, it is possible to preserve biodiversity.

‘Bio’, which stands for life, and ‘diversity’, which means variety, make up the phrase "biodiversity." The diversity of life on Earth is referred to as biodiversity. Living species include all types of plants, animals, microorganisms, and fungus.

Benefits Of Biodiversity

Community engagement to protect biodiversity is crucial. Biodiversity has several economic advantages.

Many parts of the world benefit economically from biodiversity. The tourism and recreation industries are facilitated by biodiversity. National Parks and Natural Reserves gain a lot from it.

The best locations for ecotourism, photography, art, cinematography, and literary works are in forests, animal reserves, and sanctuaries.

Biodiversity is essential for maintaining the gaseous composition of the atmosphere, breaking down waste, and removing contaminants.

Biodiversity helps in improving soil quality.

Types Of Biodiversity

Genetic Biodiversity | Genetic diversity refers to the variance in genes and genotypes within a species, such as how each individual human differs from the others in appearance.

Species Biodiversity | The variety of species found in a habitat or an area is known as species diversity. It is the diversity of life that is seen in a community. Ecosystem Biodiversity | The diversity of plant and animal species that coexist and are linked by food webs and food chains is referred to as ecological biodiversity.

The biological diversity of many plants and animals is essential to everything. However, biodiversity is declining daily for a number of causes. Our planet could no longer be a place to live if it doesn't stop. Thus, several strategies help in boosting the earth's biodiversity. The three main threats to biodiversity today are habitat loss, hunting, and poaching. At an alarming rate, humans are destroying forests, grasslands, reefs and other natural areas.

Hundreds of species that live in these habitats are therefore vanishing every year. Due to population decline caused by illegal hunting and poaching, several species are put under even more stress.

Importance Of Biodiversity

Maintaining biodiversity is crucial for the health of the ecological system. Many species of plants and animals are dependent on each other. As a result, if one becomes extinct, the others will begin to become vulnerable. Additionally, as both plants and animals are necessary for human existence, it is crucial for us as well. For instance, in order to exist, humans require food, which we obtain from plants. We cannot produce any crops if the soil does not provide a conducive climate. As a result, we won't be able to live sustainably on this planet.

Biodiversity in both flora and fauna is essential today. Therefore, to prevent the decrease in species in danger, we need to implement a number of interventions. Furthermore, vehicle pollution should decrease. So that both humans and animals can get fresh air to breathe. Moreover, it will also decrease global warming which is the major cause of the extinction of the species.

How To Preserve Biodiversity

The basic goal of biodiversity conservation is to protect life on earth, all species, the ecosystem, and a healthy environment for all time so that it will continue to be healthy for future generations. The maintenance of the food chain, the provision of a healthy habitat for many animals, including people, and the promotion of our sustainable development all depend heavily on biodiversity conservation.

Here are some ways you can preserve biodiversity:

Set Up Gardens | The simplest approach to increase biodiversity is to build gardens inside of homes. In the yard or even on the balcony, you may grow a variety of plants. Additionally, this would contribute to bringing in more fresh air within the house.

Plant Local Flowers, Fruits And Vegetables | Plant a variety in your backyard or a hanging garden using the native plants, fruits, and vegetables of your region. Nurseries are excellent places to learn about caring for and preserving plants.

3 R’s | Reduce your consumption, reuse what you can, recycle before throwing away.

Since humans consume the majority of biodiversity resources, it is primarily their duty to maintain and safeguard biodiversity in order to save the environment. The diversity of species, the health of the ecosystem, the state of the environment, and the continued viability of life on earth are crucial. By maintaining and safeguarding species, ecosystems, and natural resources, biodiversity conservation can be achieved for the sustainability of a healthy planet. Some rare species can be saved with the help of law enforcement.

All living species are interconnected and can be negatively impacted by one disturbance and therefore maintaining biodiversity is crucial for human survival. Inadequate biodiversity protection puts human life, as well as the lives of plants, animals, and the environment, at danger. As a result, we must make every effort to preserve our biodiversity.

Conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity

Biodiversity is currently being lost at up to 1,000 times the natural rate. Some scientists are now referring to the crisis as the ‘Earth’s sixth mass extinction’, comparable to the last great extinction crisis 65 million years ago. These extinctions are irreversible and pose a serious threat to our health and wellbeing. Designation and management of protected areas is the cornerstone of biodiversity conservation. However, despite an increase in the total number of protected areas in the world, biodiversity continues to decline.

An integrated landscape approach to conservation planning plays a key role in ensuring suitable habitats for species. However, many protected areas are not functioning as effectively as originally intended, due in part to limited resources to maintain these areas and/or enforce relevant legal frameworks. In addition, current protected area networks may need to be re-aligned to account for climate change. Efforts to preserve biodiversity must take into account not only the physical environment, but also social and economic systems that are well connected to biodiversity and ecosystem services. For protected areas to contribute effectively to a secure future for biodiversity, there is a need for measures to enhance the representativeness of networks, and to improve management effectiveness.

  • Growth in protected areas in many countries is helping to maintain options for the future, but sustainable use and management of territory outside protected areas remains a priority.
  • Measures to improve environmental status within conservation areas, combined with landscape-scale approaches, are urgently needed if their efficiency is to be improved.
  • Lack of adequate technical and financial resources and capacity can limit the upscaling of innovative solutions, demonstrating further the need for regional and subregional co-operation.
  • Capacity building is a key factor in the successful avoidance and reduction of land degradation and informed restoration.
  • Capacity development needs should be addressed at three levels: national, provincial and local.
  • There is a need for capacity building to enable sources outside government to inform relevant departments and policies on biodiversity (e.g. through consultancies, academia and think tanks).

Sites, connected landscapes and networks

Conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable use.

UNESCO works on the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of its components through UNESCO designated sites, including biosphere reserves , World Heritage sites and UNESCO Global Geoparks . In 2018, UNESCO designated sites protected over 10 million km 2 , an area equivalent to the size of China. These conservation instruments have adopted policies and strategies that aim to conserve these sites, while supporting the broader objectives of sustainable development. One such example is the policy on the integration of a sustainable development perspective into the processes of the World Heritage Convention.

UNESCO is also the depository of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance . Countless species of plants and animals depend on these delicate habitats for survival.

The first comprehensive assessment of species that live within World Heritage sites reveals just how critical they are to preserving the diversity of life on Earth.

Capacity building

Capacity building is needed to provide adequate support to Member States to attain the international biodiversity goals and the SDGs. In some countries, technical, managerial and institutional capacity to define guidelines for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity is inadequate. Additionally, existing institutional and technical capacity is often fragmented and uncoordinated. As new ways of interacting with biodiversity emerge, it is essential that stakeholders are trained and have sufficient capacity to implement new and varied approaches. Further efforts will be needed therefore to facilitate capacity building by fostering learning and leadership skills.

UNESCO is mandated to assist Member States in the design and implementation of national policies on education, culture, science, technology and innovation including biodiversity.

The BIOPALT project: integrated management of ecosystems

More than 30 million people live in the Lake Chad Basin. The site is highly significant in terms of  biodiversity and natural and cultural heritage. The cross-border dimension of the basin also presents opportunities for sub-regional integration. The  BIOsphere and Heritage of Lake Chad (BIOPALT) project focuses on poverty reduction and peace promotion, and aims to strengthen the capacities of the Lake Chad Basin Commission member states to safeguard  and  manage sustainably the water resources, socio-ecosystems and cultural resources of the region.

Women for bees: Women’s empowerment and biodiversity conservation

Women for Bees is a state-of-the-art female beekeeping entrepreneurship programme launched by UNESCO and Guerlain. Implemented in UNESCO designated biosphere reserves around the world with the support of the French training centre, the Observatoire Français d’Apidologie (OFA), the programme has actor, film maker and humanitarian activist Angelina Jolie for a Godmother, helping promote its twin objectives of women’s empowerment and biodiversity conservation.

Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and capacity development

Capacity development is  present in all areas of IOC ’s work, at the global programme level as well as  within  each of its three sub-commissions and  the IOC-INDIO regional committee. In 2015, IOC adopted its Capacity Development Strategy. IOC is the custodian agency for SDG 14A.

In collaboration with the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) , IOC has implemented a network of Regional Training Centres under the OceanTeacher Global Academy (OTGA) project, which has seven such centres around the world (Belgium, Colombia, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Mozambique and Senegal). Through its network of centres, OTGA provides a  programme of training courses related to IOC programmes, which contribute to the sustainable management of  oceans and coastal areas worldwide. OTGA has developed an e-Learning  Platform that hosts all training  resources for the training courses and makes them freely available to any interested parties.

Since 2012,  270 scientists from 69 countries have been trained to  manage  marine  biodiversity  data,  publish  data  through the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) , and perform scientific data analysis for reporting and assessment. Since 1990, IOC West Pacific Regional Training and  Research  Centres  have  trained  more  than  1,000 people in a variety of topics including:

  • monitoring the ecological impacts of ocean acidification on coral reef ecosystems,
  • harmful algal blooms,
  • traditional and molecular taxonomy,
  • reef health monitoring, and
  • seagrass and mangrove ecology and management.

Most courses take place in a face-to-face classroom environment,  however training can also be conducted online using ICTs and the OceanTeacher e-Learning Platform, thereby increasing the number of people reached.

Governance and connecting the scales

Governance systems in many countries function as indirect drivers of changes to ecosystems and biodiversity. At present, most policies that address biodiversity are fragmented and target specific. Additionally, the current design of governance, institutions and policies rarely takes into account the diverse values of biodiversity. There are also substantial challenges to the design and implementation of effective transboundary and regional initiatives to halt biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, climate change and unsustainable development. Another key challenge to successful policy-making is adequate mobilization of financial resources. Increased funding from both public and private sources, together with innovative financing mechanisms such as ecological fiscal transfers, would help to strengthen institutional capacities.

  • Governance options that harness synergies are the best option for achieving the SDGs.
  • There is a need to develop engagement and actions with diverse stakeholders in governance through regional cooperation and partnerships with the private sector.
  • Mainstreaming biodiversity into development policies, plans and programmes can improve efforts to achieve both the Aichi Targets and the SDGs.

UNESCO works to engage with new governance schemes at all levels through the LINKS Programme , the MAB Programme , the UNESCO-CBD Joint Programme and integrated management of ecosystems linking local to regional scales.

UNESCO supports the integrated management of ecosystems linking local to regional scales, especially through transboundary biosphere reserves, World Heritage sites and UNESCO Global Geoparks. The governance and management of a biosphere reserve places special emphasis on the crucial role that combined knowledge, learning and capacity building play in creating and sustaining a dynamic and mutually beneficial interactions between the conservation and development objectives at local and regional scales.

A transboundary biosphere reserve is defined by the following elements: a shared ecosystem; a common culture and shared traditions, exchanges and cooperation at local level; the will to manage jointly the territory along the bio-sphere reserve values and principles; a political commitment resulting in an official agreement between governmental authorities of the countries concerned. The transboundary biosphere reserve establishes a coordinating structure representative of various administrations and scientific boards, the authorities in charge of the different areas included the protected areas, the representatives of local communities, private sector, and NGOs. A permanent secretariat and a budget are devoted to its functioning. Focal points for co-operation are designated in each country participating.

Transboundary conservation and cooperation

The Trifinio Fraternidad Transboundary Biosphere Reserve is located between El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. It is the first transboundary biosphere reserve in Central America and represents a major contribution to the implementation of the Mesoamerican Corridor. It includes key biodiversity areas, such as Montecristo National Park and a variety of forest ecosystems.

Introduction.

Biodiversity, a term coined to represent the myriad of life forms on Earth, is the variability among living organisms from all sources, including terrestrial, marine, and other aquatic ecosystems. The conservation of biodiversity is crucial for maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.

The Importance of Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the backbone of all life on Earth, supporting critical ecosystem services such as pollination, decomposition, water purification, and climate regulation. It plays a pivotal role in human survival, providing food, medicine, and livelihoods, while also shaping our cultural identity.

Biodiversity is under threat globally, primarily due to human activities. Habitat destruction, overexploitation, invasive species, pollution, and climate change are the major drivers of biodiversity loss. These threats have led to unprecedented extinction rates of species worldwide.

Conservation Strategies

Conservation strategies aim to mitigate these threats and sustain biodiversity. They include in-situ conservation, such as protected areas and wildlife reserves, and ex-situ conservation, like seed banks and zoos. Additionally, international agreements like the Convention on Biological Diversity aim to conserve biodiversity, promote sustainable use, and ensure equitable benefit-sharing.

The conservation of biodiversity is a shared responsibility that requires global cooperation. It is not merely about saving individual species, but about maintaining the complexity and resilience of Earth’s life-support systems. Through education, policy changes, and sustainable practices, we can ensure the longevity of our planet’s rich biodiversity for future generations.

500 Words Essay on Conservation of Biodiversity

Introduction to biodiversity conservation.

Biodiversity, a portmanteau of “biological diversity,” refers to the variety of life forms on Earth. This diversity is not just about the number of species but also includes the genetic diversity within species and the variety of ecosystems. Conservation of biodiversity is crucial for maintaining the balance of the natural world and ensuring the survival of all species, including humans.

Biodiversity plays a vital role in the functioning of the planet. It is the backbone of ecosystems, providing essential services such as pollination, decomposition, water purification, and climate regulation. It also contributes to human well-being by providing food, medicines, and raw materials, as well as cultural and recreational benefits. Moreover, biodiversity enhances the resilience of ecosystems, enabling them to adapt to changes and disturbances, including those caused by climate change.

Despite its importance, biodiversity is under threat globally. The primary drivers of biodiversity loss include habitat destruction, overexploitation, pollution, invasive species, and climate change. Habitat destruction, often due to human activities such as deforestation and urbanization, is the most significant threat, leading to species extinction and ecosystem degradation. Overexploitation of species for food, medicine, and other uses also contributes to biodiversity loss. Additionally, pollution and invasive species disrupt ecosystems, while climate change alters habitats and threatens species adapted to specific climate conditions.

To counter these threats, various biodiversity conservation strategies have been implemented. These include protected areas, species-specific conservation measures, habitat restoration, sustainable use, and integration of biodiversity considerations into sectoral policies. Protected areas, such as national parks and wildlife reserves, are crucial for preserving habitats and species. Species-specific measures include laws against hunting and trade of endangered species. Habitat restoration involves the recovery of degraded habitats, while sustainable use promotes the use of biodiversity in a way that it can be replenished. Lastly, integrating biodiversity considerations into sectors like agriculture, forestry, and fisheries helps minimize their impacts on biodiversity.

Role of Individuals and Communities

Individuals and communities also play a significant role in biodiversity conservation. By adopting sustainable practices, such as reducing consumption, recycling, and using renewable energy, individuals can lower their environmental footprint. Communities can protect local biodiversity through community-based conservation initiatives and by promoting traditional knowledge and practices that conserve biodiversity. Education and awareness about the importance of biodiversity and the threats it faces are also crucial for engaging individuals and communities in conservation efforts.

In conclusion, biodiversity is essential for the health of the planet and human well-being. However, it is under threat from various human activities. Conservation of biodiversity requires a multi-faceted approach, involving protected areas, species-specific measures, habitat restoration, sustainable use, and policy integration. Individuals and communities also have a crucial role to play in these efforts. By working together, we can safeguard the planet’s biodiversity for future generations.

Conservation of Biodiversity

What is conservation of biodiversity.

The variability of life on Earth is called Biodiversity. Biodiversity takes into account all the living organisms present on Earth. Healthy and good biodiversity indicate a healthy and good ecosystem. Hence, biodiversity is very important. A healthy ecosystem also includes the availability of pure water, pure air, healthy land, a good climate, and the availability of nutrients on Earth. Therefore, biodiversity conservation plays an important role in the quality of life of all living organisms.

The protection and management of biodiversity in obtaining sustainable development of resources are called Biodiversity conservation.

There are three major objectives of Biodiversity conservation:

Preservation of the diversity of species.

Sustainability of species and ecosystem.

Maintaining life-supporting and essential ecological processes.

What is Loss of Biodiversity?

A number of factors like pollution, erosion, evolution, urbanization, industrialization, population , and depletion lead to the loss of biodiversity. Loss of biodiversity is very harmful to the ecosystem as it indicates either loss of species, or reduction of species in a natural habitat, or both of them on a global level. Loss of biodiversity has a poor impact on the ecosystem. Loss of biodiversity directly impacts the ecosystem and food chains in it. It affects agriculture and weakens the resistance to natural disasters like floods, drought, etc.

Definition of Biodiversity Conservation

“Protection, restoration, and management of biodiversity in order to derive sustainable benefits for present and future generations.”. Or, it can also be defined as, “the totality of genes, species, and ecosystems in a defined area.”.

Biodiversity conservation refers to the protection, preservation, and management of ecosystems and natural habitats and ensuring that they are healthy and functional.

The three main objectives of Biodiversity Conservation are as follows-

To protect and preserve species diversity.

To ensure sustainable management of the species and ecosystems.

Prevention and restoration of ecological processes and life support systems.

Biodiversity Conservation Methods

Two types of methods are employed to conserve biodiversity. They are- In situ conservation and Ex-situ conservation.

Following are some of the ways through which Biodiversity can be conserved:

In-situ Conservation

Ex-situ Conservation

In Situ Conservation

In Situ Conservation refers to the preservation and protection of the species in their natural habitat. It means the conservation of genetic resources in natural populations of plant or animal species. In situ conservation involves the management of biodiversity in the same area where it is found.

In situ, biodiversity conservation has many advantages

It preserves species as well as their natural habitat.

It ensures protection to a large number of populations.

It is economic and a convenient method of conservation

It doesn’t require species to adjust to a new habitat.

Different methods of In-situ conservation include biosphere reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries , biodiversity hotspots, gene sanctuary, and sacred groves.

It is defined as the conservation of species within their natural habitat, where the natural ecosystem is protected and maintained.

In-situ conservation possesses numerous advantages. Some of the important advantages of in-situ conservation are as follows:

It is a cost-effective and convenient way of biodiversity conservation.

Various living organisms can be conserved at the same time.

They can evolve better and can easily get adapted to various environmental conditions.

In-situ conservation occurs in places like national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and biosphere reserves.

Biosphere Reserves

These are national governments nominated sites, large areas (often up to 5000 square km) of an ecosystem where the traditional lifestyle and natural habitat of the inhabitants of that ecosystem are protected. They are mostly open to tourists and researchers.

Example- Sundarban, Nanda Devi, Nokrek, and Manas in India.

National Parks

These are limited reserves maintained by the government for the conservation of wildlife as well as the environment . Human activities are prohibited in national parks and they are solely dedicated to the protection of natural fauna of the area. They mostly occupy an area of 100-500 square km. There are a total of 104 national parks in India, right now. The national parks may even be within a biosphere reserve. These are small reserves that are protected and maintained by the government. Its boundaries are well protected, where human activities such as grazing, forestry, habitat, and cultivation are restricted.

Example - Kanha National Park, Gir National Park, Kaziranga National Park, and so on.

Wildlife Sanctuaries

Wildlife Sanctuaries are protected areas meant only for the conservation of wild animals. A few human activities such as cultivation, wood collection, and other forest product collection are allowed here, but they must not interfere with the conservation of the animals. Tourist visits are also allowed in these areas. There are a total of 551 wildlife sanctuaries in India. These are the places where only wild animals can be found. Certain human activities like timber harvesting, cultivation, collection of woods, and other forest products are permitted unless they interfere with the conservation project. Recreation tourism is also permitted.

Example - Ghana Bird Sanctuary, Abohar Wildlife Sanctuary, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, etc.

Biodiversity Hotspots

A biodiversity hotspot are the areas of conservation where there is strictly a minimum of 1500 species of vascular plants and a habitat that has lost its 70% cover. These are protected areas for various purposes where the wildlife, inhabitant lifestyle, and domesticated plants and animals are conserved. Tourist and research activities are allowed.

Example - The Himalayas, The Western Ghats, The North East, and The Nicobar Islands.

Gene Sanctuary

Gene sanctuary is a conservation area reserved only for plants. India has its only gene sanctuary set up in Garo Hills of Meghalaya for the conservation of wild species of Citrus. Plans to open more such sanctuaries are underway.

Sacred Groves

Sacred Groves are conserved areas for wildlife protected by communities due to religious beliefs. It is mostly a part of the forest where its wildlife is given complete protection.

Ex Situ Conservation

Ex Situ Conservation means conservation of life outside their natural habitat or place of occurrence. It is the method in which part of the population or the entire endangered species is taken from its natural habitat which is threatened and breeding and maintaining of these species take place in artificial ecosystems. These artificial ecosystems could be zoos, nurseries, botanical gardens, etc. The living environments are altered in these conservation sites, so there are fewer survival struggles like scarcity of food, water, or space. Ex-situ conservation of biodiversity consists of breeding and maintenance of endangered species using artificial environments like zoos, nurseries, botanical gardens, gene banks, etc. The competition for food, water, and space among the organisms is low.

Advantages of Ex Situ Conservation Include

Essential life-sustaining conditions like climate, food availability, veterinary care can be altered and are under human control.

Artificial breeding methods can be introduced leading to successful breeding and creating many more offspring of the species.

The species can be protected from poaching and population management can be efficiently done.

Gene techniques can be applied to increase the population of the species and they can again be reintroduced into the wild.

Biodiversity Conservation Strategies

Conservation of Ecosystems - The intent of the conservation of biodiversity is to provide long term viability to the ecosystems. It is to make sure that ecological integrity is intact. The landscapes of the region which have undergone historical or evolutionary deterioration can be reinstated. The threats can be removed and the ecosystems should be able to continue with ecological processes.

Reverse the decline of species - According to this strategy, the aim of conservation is to restore the population of declined species in a particular ecosystem.

Conservation of all biological aspects - This strategy aims at giving cover and conserving food, livestock, microbial population, agricultural stock including plants and animals.

Efficient utilization of natural resources.

Strict laws on deforestation and preventions of deforestation by every means.

Poaching and killing animals in the wild should be prevented.

Creating public awareness about conservation of biodiversity and its importance.

Longer time and breeding activity of the animals are provided.

The breeding of species in captivity is reintroduced in the wild.

Genetic techniques are used to preserve endangered species.

Need for Biodiversity Conservation

Various types of conservation methods ensure a healthy ecosystem. A healthy ecosystem means a clean and healthy environment, smooth running food chains, availability of resources, and so on.

Human beings are also majorly dependent on the environment for basic necessities and wellbeing. We are interdependent on a variety of species of plants and animals for a living. Hence it is very important to conserve these species and their ecosystems which are threatened by many human activities.

A threat to biodiversity poses a threat to humankind. It can be the cause of various grave problems like pollution, habitat loss, resource exploitation, climate change, species extinction, disease outbreak, and so on.

For economic and various life support reasons, it is very important to protect and preserve biodiversity.

Strategies for Biodiversity Conservation

Following are some of the important strategies for biodiversity conservation:

Conservation of all food varieties, timber plants, livestock, microbes, and agricultural animals should be done.

Identification and conservation of all the economically important organisms should be done.

Preservation of unique ecosystems should be done.

Efficient utilization of resources should be done.

Prevention of poaching and hunting of wild animals should be done.

Development of the reserves and protected areas should be done carefully.

Reduction in the levels of pollutants should be done on the environment.

Prohibition of deforestation should be followed.

Strict environmental laws should be followed.

Conservation of useful and endangered species of plants and animals should be done.

Reason for Conservation of Biodiversity

An area with higher abundant species has a more stable environment when compared to a lower species abundance area.  Humans directly depend on different species of plants for numerous needs. Similarly, people depend on various animals and microbes for different reasons.

Due to various reasons such as the loss of habitat, over-exploitation of resources, climatic changes, pollution, invasive exotic species, diseases, hunting, etc biodiversity is being lost. It is very important to conserve biodiversity as it provides various economic and ethical benefits and adds aesthetic value.

Conservation of biodiversity is a key factor for the better survival of different species including the human being, in this world. Due to change in climate and surroundings over the last thousands of years, the species which once existed on the earth have now gone extinct.

Hence there has arisen the need for the conservation of biodiversity so that we can prevent the remaining species on the earth from being extinct. In order to provide more information on this, we have prepared long essays for students in order to educate them that why it is important for us to go for the conservation of biodiversity.

Audience: The below given essays are exclusively written for  school students (Class 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 Standard) and college students. Furthermore, those students preparing for competitive exams like IAS, IPS and UPSC can increase their knowledge by reading these essays.

Conservation of biodiversity means protection and preservation of the flora and fauna on the earth. Conservation of biodiversity is essential for the survival of all the species. Optimum conservation of biodiversity means richness of ecosystem and improved quality of life. It also results in well-established food chains in different habitats.

Disastrous growth in the industrial sectors has severely impacted the conservation of biodiversity. The species of both plants and animals are becoming scarce. Clearing land for setting up houses and industries results in deforestation, thus, disturbing the whole ecological balance. The intense level of air, water, and soil pollution have also made things worse.

Serious steps need to be taken in order to support the conservation of biodiversity. Without trees and animals, the biological chain would collapse and cause the extinction of many species. Needless to say, it would endanger the survival of the human race too.

Introduction:

Biodiversity is essential for ecological harmony. There are many types of wildlife that are created by God and there is a purpose behind these varied formations. However, it looks like that human beings own a blind eye that cannot see the necessity of conservation of biodiversity. They are indulging in numerous activities which are resulting in the deterioration of the biodiversity.

What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is also recognized as ecological diversity or biological diversity which is the range of different classes of animals, plants, and other living creatures in a specific habitat or inside the world. We should do the conservation of biodiversity because it benefits in preserving the environmental equilibrium on Earth planet. Every single class of flora and creatures possess its individual part in the environmental structure for completing it.

Why there is a necessity for the conservation of Biodiversity?

The necessity for the conservation of biodiversity is usually ignored by the people. The main reason behind this thing is that we think about ourselves only and not about our surroundings and environment. In fact, several species have become vanished up till now and if we did not take any essential step to save them then, more of them will soon become extinct. Fertility of biodiversity is vital for the correct functioning of the earth’s environment.

Conclusion:

It will not be possible for us to survive for a longer time on earth if we do not become serious about the conservation of biodiversity and see it declining day by day. We should stop misusing our environment for our personal selfish motives. In fact, we must think about contributing in the direction of conservation of biodiversity.

Conservation of biodiversity has been an issue that should be discussed among every human being living in this world along with the widely gifted species around. The richer the biodiversity in an environment, the healthier will be the species living in them.

Conservation of biodiversity is a key factor for the better survival of different species including the human being, in this world. The now growing technological development has made us ignore the importance of conservation of biodiversity massively. This careless approach towards the issue will cost us our life cycle too.

Biodiversity refers to the whole species of the flora and fauna category that depends on each other for maintaining life. Many animals depend on the other species to balance its diet and to maintain a healthier life. Including human being, every species depend on each other to survive their life cycle, even the plants.

Need for Conservation of Biodiversity:

If conservation of biodiversity is not done effectively then each species will be extinct eventually due to lack of appetite and through hunger. Over the last few decades, this scenario is been a major problem and many unique species have already been extinct. There are species that are still at the verge of extinction as a result of lack of conservation of biodiversity.

If a single species get extinct from the food chain it will affect the species who survive on the former and eventually get on the queue of destruction. The technical development of our world has a major part to play in this lack of conservation of biodiversity.

We, humans, have developed many ways to ease up our lifestyle, but we forget about our co-species and we indirectly destroy their life. Conservation of biodiversity should be taken into account for the smoother food chain balance and thus maintain the whole flora and fauna species. Being selfish, humans forget to restore the ways to enhance the conservation of biodiversity and this view to nature’s gift should be changed.

“Conservation of Biodiversity” refers to safeguarding the variety of flora and fauna living together on Earth. The life cycle of plants and animals living on our planet depends on each other for food and shelter. Unfortunately, in recent times “biodiversity” on Earth and especially in India is declining rapidly. Heavy industrialization and rapid urbanization are the major reasons for the degradation of the ecological system in India. “Conservation of biodiversity” must be our prime concern as it is the need of the hour.

Importance of Conservation of Biodiversity:

India is an ancient civilization where the Vedas and primeval manuscripts define our deep connect to nature. Rapidly increasing industrialization and the urban jungle has threatened the efforts of “conservation of biodiversity”.

The importance of conservation of biodiversity can be seen in the following areas:

The Food Chain:

Varied species of animals and plants serve as a source of food to another animal or living organism hence it is called as a food chain. Deforestation has resulted in scares amount of prey in the jungle because of which carnivorous animals like tigers and leopards attack villages. As one species becomes extinct or immigrates its habitat, the other dependent species experience deficiency in food. So efforts are to be made for the conservation of biodiversity in order to maintain the balance of the food chain.

Daily Needs of Nourishment:

For survival we need healthy food, fresh water to satisfy our nutritional needs. The decline in varieties of plants and animals has resulted in nutritional deficiencies. Rapidly diminishing ground water level in Marathwada region of Maharashtra has generated a grave crisis of drinkable water. Lack of “conservation of biodiversity” has resulted in extinction of natural resources which are the cornerstone of our ecological system. Hence, conservation of biodiversity must be promoted to ensure survival of living beings.

Trees and plants are the source of life on Earth as they inhale carbon dioxide and harmful gases from the air and exhale the life giving oxygen. Deforestation and urbanization have resulted in proliferation of air pollution in India. Atmosphere of New Delhi the capital of our country has become equivalent to a gas chamber of toxic gases. Efforts for planting trees and constructing vertical gardens in cities will empower “Conservation of biodiversity” and help to improve the quality of air in our metro cities.

Farming and Cultivation of Crops:

Cultivation of crops and farming is supported by many insects, earthworms, fungi and bacteria which make the soil fertile and also provide manure. Extinction of these species will surely hamper quality of crop cultivation. National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) of India has provided guidelines which promotes organic and traditional farming techniques to amalgamate “conservation of biodiversity” with the challenges in Agriculture sector in India.

The Constitution of India provides Right to clean air and environment as our fundamental right. “Conservation of Biodiversity” must be our prime motive and concrete steps must be taken in this direction so that we can exercise our fundamental right. We must practise eco-friendly lifestyle to conserve our nature.

Conservation of biodiversity is important in keeping the balance of our environment. There has been a continuous hammering on the ever present need for the conservation of biodiversity due to its extreme importance to the continual survival and existence of mankind, animals, plants and every other living organism on our planet. We need to do more than just emphasising the need to converse and protect biodiversity and the importance of biodiversity, we have to start looking at the various methods we can employ in conserving our biodiversity and start putting the methods into good use.

Methods of Conservation of Biodiversity:

There are many methods we can use in conversing biodiversity; some of these methods are discussed below:

1. Population Control:

A major factor contributing to the rapid decline in biodiversity is the ever increasing population of humans. To meet the many needs of the large human population, a lot of harm is done to nature and this brings imbalance to nature. A few example of activities that bring harm include the cutting down of trees for the construction of new shelters and to create space for settlements, the killing of animals to meet the food requirement of the large population. When the population is greater than usual, the increasing needs of the population leads to a depletion of fauna and flora which ensures a biodiversity decline. If we control the population of humans first and then allow all other animals and plants species to thrive and grow, we are on the path to conserving biodiversity.

2. Pollution Control:

Our planet is under serious attack from pollution and it is causing great harm to it. Global warming as a result of increasing temperature has now become a thing. Climate change, drop in the quality of air and the increase in the quantity of pollution that are on the land and also in the various water bodies are causing a lot of various types and forms of diseases in different plants and animals.

The extinction of several animal and plant species has also been caused by pollution. The changes in climate have become extremely hard for a number of plants and animals to withstand and it makes their survival very difficult. We need to do our best in cutting down and reducing (if possible eliminate) all of the different activities that cause pollution.

3. Wastage Avoidance:

Since most of the products, things or items we use are gotten as raw materials from natural resources, we should do our very best not to waste them. The fuel that our vehicles use, the electricity that we consume, the paper and books we write things on, the clothes and accessories we wear and a whole lot of other things we use are all produced indirectly or directly from natural resources.

We should understand that we aren’t the only ones using these natural resources as they are also important to other species of animals and even plants for their survival. We must try to make use of only what we need and encourage the reuse and recycling of products.

‘Conservation of Biodiversity’ is very much needed in today’s world. The world will function properly only if our ecosystem is well-balanced. Conservation of Biodiversity means healthy environment . With so many new inventions and technologies, humans are creating more harm to themselves by spoiling the environment and causing imbalance in the ecosystem. The impact of doing so cannot be understood unless they face the consequences of it. Our planet Earth can survive only if conservation of biodiversity is given adequate importance that it deserves.

What does Biodiversity Mean?

Biodiversity is what makes the environment. Biodiversity means the diversity in biological system . The Earth has different species of plants, animals, and other living organisms and these together constitute biodiversity. Each species of plants and animals is important and they have been created for a reason. Hence, it is very important that this diversity is maintained as it is. The society that preserves the richness of biodiversity will lead a healthy and happy life and the society that turns blind eye to the damages caused to biodiversity will suffer.

In order to maintain the ecological system, conservation of biodiversity is a must. Everything that man requires is very much available in the outer world but we have no time to see those. Humans compete to prove their intelligence and have ended up in spoiling the naturally available resources. Nature has given everything in abundance but we have exploited most of the things and are trying to recreate everything. If we would have given importance to conserve biodiversity, we could have avoided this tough situation.

Conservation of biodiversity must be given importance for various reasons.

Let us understand some of the essential reasons:

i. Different kinds of fruits, vegetables, leaves, fishes, meats and many other edible things available in the nature is stuffed with different types of nutrients that are very much needed for proper functioning of the human body. When there is a decline in certain types of vegetables or fruits, it means that we are losing those nutrients which is not a good sign and this means we make ourselves nutrient deficient.

ii. Conservation of biodiversity is so stressed upon because it helps in the purification of air . Plants and trees inhale Carbon dioxide and exhale Oxygen. Without Oxygen, human kind cannot survive. By cutting down trees, we are digging a graveyard for ourselves. Plants and trees helps in the purification of air and keeps the atmosphere clean.

iii. During ancient times, there were no medicines for any ailment. Our ancestors purely relied upon the leaves and roots of some plants to cure diseases. There are hundreds of herbs in the universe that has medicinal value and most importantly with no side effects. By not lending ears to the conservation of biodiversity propaganda, we are inviting many new diseases.

Ways to Conserve Biodiversity:

The previous section made it clear that decline in the biodiversity is not a thing to be overlooked at.

To bring back what we lost, conservation of biodiversity is a must and there are many methods to do it:

i. Deforestation is the main reason for the vast decline in the number of plant and animal species. Putting an end to deforestation is the first method for conservation of biodiversity.

ii. Human activities leading to pollution and changes in atmospheric temperature needs to be controlled .

iii. Instead of exploiting the available natural resources, we have to learn to reuse whatever is possible and avoid wasting things.

iv. Spreading awareness is one of the best method that everyone should follow for conservation of biodiversity.

Everything in nature is abundant but that doesn’t mean that we can exploit it or spoil them. The fact that ‘Conservation of biodiversity’ is stressed upon in all important forums will denote the significance and seriousness of it. As the prime users of nature, we all have to contribute for the conservation of biodiversity.

Biodiversity is the natural occurrence of a variety of species which co-exist on our planet earth. It includes distinctive creatures, plants, smaller scale living beings and their qualities, water environments, earthbound, and marine biological communities in which they all are available. Biodiversity is fundamental for our reality and additionally important in its very own right. Biodiversity additionally includes different other vital things and administrations, for example, social, recreational, and things that play an important role in our lives. So why is there a need for the conservation of biodiversity? It is probably because around 95% of the species that once existed on the earth have now gone extinct.

Throughout the years, the exhaustion of biodiversity has been very dynamic. This is occurring because of loss of habitat, over the top abuse of assets, climatic changes, ailments, contamination, poaching of creatures and so on. So as to address this situation, conservation of biodiversity has been a significant cause of concern for the government as well as social organisations.

It must be understood that individuals treasure all advantages from the biodiversity. Thus, they should concentrate on taking appropriate consideration related to the conservation of biodiversity in various structures. It is critical on the grounds that there must be something left for the future age to take a look at. We as people should check the degradation and the annihilation of the natural surroundings, maintaining the biodiversity at its prime dimension.

Goals of Conservation of Biodiversity:

No objective can be achieved if one does not have a proper goal in place. Conservation of Biodiversity has also its own set of goals to be achieved by the government as well as all of us.

The three goals are:

i. Maintenance of life support systems as well as ecological processes

ii. To ensure that the remaining variety of species are preserved.

iii. To ensure that the exploitation of biological systems and species is within the permissible levels.

Measures Undertaken for Conservation of Biodiversity:

The government has on its part undertaken numerous projects in order to save the species which are on the brink of extinction from the earth.

Some of the projects are:

Project Tiger , under the aim of conservation of biodiversity was started as a Central Sector Scheme in 1973 with 9 tiger reserves situated in various natural surroundings in 9 unique states. There are at present 18 Reserves in 13 states. At present tiger, Conservation has been seen in India not just as a push to spare a jeopardized species in any case, with equivalent significance, additionally as a method for conservation of biodiversity to a sizeable extent.

Another popular project for the conservation of biodiversity was the Crocodile Breeding Project which was started in Orissa and afterwards stretched out to a few different states in April 1975 with UNDP help. The primary target was to ensure the three jeopardized types of crocodiles, in particular, Gavialis gangeticus, Crocodylus palustris and the saltwater crocodile, Crocodylus porosus.

Lesser Cats Project was one such conservation of biodiversity project which was started in the year 1976 with the help of WWF in India for the preservation of four types of lesser cats, namely, Felis marmorta Martin, Felis bengalensis Kerr, Felis viverrina Bennet and Felis lemruinki Vigors Horsfield found in Sikkim and Northern parts of West Bengal.

The Manipur Brow-antlered Deer Project was launched in the year 1981 in Manipur to protect the forehead antlered deer (Cerevus eldi) which is very nearly extinct. The natural habitat incorporates 35 sq.km., of sanctuary and park. The number of inhabitants in the deer has expanded from 18 to 27 through this project.

Project Elephant, as a part of conservation of biodiversity was started in the year 1991 to ensure the Asiatic elephant which is likewise a profoundly endangered animal species in view of vast scale poaching.

Project Rhino was started in the year 1987 in Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam to protect the lesser one-horned rhinoceros from extinction. It covers a zone of 430 sq.km.

Himalayan musk deer Project was started in the year 1981 to protect the jeopardized musk deer which is nearing extinction. The project has also yielded good results.

Project Hangul was started in the year 1970 in Kashmir valley to protect the exceptionally jeopardized Kashmir stag (Cerevus elaphus hangul) which is nearing extinction. This project has been successful in increasing the population of this endangered species.

The Way Ahead:

There have been so many initiatives by the government as well as several agencies to save the species which are on the brink of extinction. But, as the citizens of India, it is our utmost duty to follow the laws and regulations related to the natural parks and sanctuaries and help the government achieve its goals. Then only, perhaps we shall be able to achieve better results in the projects for conservation of biodiversity.

Conservation of biodiversity is necessary to maintain Mother Nature. The earth is a beautiful place because of the variety of natural combinations for both living and nonliving elements on the surface of the earth. The aspect of biodiversity makes it even more beautiful because of the existence of different species in the ecosystem. Conservation of biodiversity is one of the goals of saving Mother Earth.

Due to industrialization and a growing population on earth, there have been massive destructions of the ecosystem, including the natural habitat which is vital for the preservation of biodiversity. The destruction of the ecosystem leads to the extinction of some species and the only way to ensure the conservation of biodiversity is by trying to restore the ecosystem and prevent further destruction.

Forest Conservation and Restoration:

Forests provide habitat to many organisms. In conserving biodiversity, forests conservation and restoration is vital. As a result of the growing population on earth, the ecosystem has been really disrupted because of the human needs for shelter and food. Forests have been destroyed through deforestation and animals are deprived of their natural habitat. Apart from forests being a natural habitat for several species, it is also essential for climate regulation. Mother Nature has suffered climate changes recently due to the effects of global warming.

Adverse climatic conditions are not suitable for the survival of some species. Conservation of biodiversity should focus on maintaining a conducive climate for species to thrive in. Well, it is evident that species differ in their abilities to thrive because some survive both extremes of cold and heat while others cannot. Global warming has caused an increase in temperature thus causing some species to have a small chance of survival on the planet. Extinction is the biggest worry when it comes to conservation of biodiversity because once a species become extinct, there is no going back.

Based on all these facts, we realize that forests hold the ecosystem together in a special way and therefore in the quest towards conservation of biodiversity, restoration of forests should be a priority. Forests are restored through reforestation and prevention of further deforestation. Once the forest coverage is restored, global warming will be a thing of the past because the trees in the forest will absorb carbon dioxide, which has been determined to be the major cause of global warming when it accumulates in the atmosphere.

Control of Human Activities:

Living on the earth’s surface is a blessing that we do not seem to appreciate. Humans should realize that there is only one earth and they should contribute to the conservation of biodiversity rather than adding to the destruction of Mother Nature. Human activities majorly contribute to the destruction of the ecosystem in general. Global warming is a current threat in the world, and its effects have been felt widely.

Global warming is as a result of carbon dioxide accumulation in the atmosphere just because of human activities like the combustion of fossil fuels, deforestation and careless waste disposal. Conservation of biodiversity means that we have to start minimizing the harm caused by human activities. Fossil fuels combustion contribute to the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, therefore, causing global warming. Fossil fuels have to be replaced for alternative energy sources like tidal and solar energy, which are not harmful to the ecosystem.

Nuclear energy could be an alternative source of energy, but it is discouraged because of the potential hazards that come along with its use for example bombs and nuclear weapons use. Deforestation results in loss of natural habitat for species and lack of means of survival regarding food. Conservation of biodiversity includes proper management of forests. Waste disposal is vital in both environmental conservation and conservation of biodiversity.

Wastes such as plastic bags and bottles are non-biodegradable, and when disposed of anyhow, they may cause harm to both plants and animals. Sewage treatment that is being directed to water bodies when untreated causes a deleterious effect on aquatic life and can cause the extinction of species in water. We should learn to participate in the conservation of biodiversity by ensuring that we do not interfere with forests, use energy that is environment-friendly and proper disposal of wastes.

Surveys and Mapping in the Ecosystem:

Conservation of biodiversity makes a lot more sense if we actually know what is in the ecosystem. Surveys on the number and types of species on earth is an essential aspect because by having the accurate statistics, it becomes easier to strategize on the conservation of biodiversity. Surveys help us to know the species that are approaching extinction so that we can be able to take care of them well.

Mapping of the forest landmass is part of the survey so that we can know the species together with their natural habitat. It is essential that studies and mapping are accurately done so that the chance of survival of species is not infringed. Through mapping, it is, therefore, possible for the definition of national parks and wildlife forest reserves.

When boundaries are made, and there is minimal interaction between wildlife and humans, poaching and other deleterious human activities will be prevented, and species will remain conserved. It is crucial that we protect all species because the earth is not survivable without plants and animals. The food-chain revolves around species, and it is the hallmark of survival on earth.

In conclusion, conservation of biodiversity is a big deal because survival on earth is determined by biodiversity. It is a collective responsibility, and we as human beings should take charge of protecting Mother Nature because we can do so. It begins with simple things like recycling a plastic bottle to much bigger things like reducing global warming. That is why we should support each other and always work as a team in order to conserve the biodiversity. Life is valuable, and biodiversity is the key to life on earth.

The Importance of Biodiversity in Ecosystem Essay

The urgent need to maintain biodiversity, urgent need to reform behavior, maintaining biodiversity, cobb and lovelock.

Biodiversity is the description of the natural state of the planet. It is not something that humans can create, they can only manage it. Biodiversity is an important aspect of the earth’s ecosystem. It is extremely unfortunate that mankind will realize this when it is already too late. The most urgent problem right now is to maintain the level of biodiversity in this world but it has to begin with a more in-depth understanding of how different species of flora and fauna can be saved from extinction. The lack of knowledge is the main reason why many are apathetic when it comes to conservation of the earth’s natural resources, especially when it comes to maintaining the earth’s biodiversity.

Three different but related scientific works will be consulted in this study in order to have a more well-rounded view of biodiversity as well as to reach a level of understanding that humans are part of the earth’s ecosystem. Humans must be active participants in conserving planet earth because he could not afford to be indifferent to its plight. Apathy will only bring destruction because no matter how technologically advanced the human race has become, it will not be able to survive without living organisms. According to Lovelock, they are man’s partner in keeping this planet alive. Every organism, including man is dependent on the integrity of the earth’s ecosystem.

There is a common thread that weaves through the works of E.O. Wilson, John Cobb, and James Lovelock. It is the idea that humans must have a heightened awareness of its destructive actions. Wilson said the rate of decline is impossible to measure because of the numerous species that are in the wild and that no one really has an accurate data on every single species of flora and fauna that existed since the beginning of time.

But there is one way to get a basic understanding of how biodiversity has declined in recent centuries. Wilson’s article will help provide this insight when he described the current state of tropical rainforests. Referring to rainforests Wilson wrote, “….although these habitats cover only 7% of the Earth’s land surface, they contain more than half the species in the entire world biota” (Wilson, 8). Knowing that tropical rainforests are being threatened by human activity one will have a basic knowledge of the rapid decline of biodiversity in the planet.

Cobb has the same basic premise but he wanted to emphasize the reason why humans are indifferent to the plight of the earth’s ecosystem and threatened species of flora and fauna. Cobb said that “In the pursuit of economic gain, most people do not want to be bothered by questions about biodiversity” (Cobb, 481). But instead of simply appealing to the scientific mind – the path that Wilson took – Cobb appealed to human life outside the scope of biology. From reading Cobb’s arguments one can get the idea that human life is more than eating nutritious food and inhaling fresh air. By destroying forest cover, killing species of fish and birds man has forever lost the chance to enjoy the interaction with these plants and animals.

Decades from now a beautiful mountain covered with evergreen trees will appear as an eyesore with its bald spots – unable to sustain a single tree. In other words there is more at stake than what was previously thought. The fight for biodiversity is not just about nature but also about the richness of human experience forever lost. Cobb also asserted that Western thought has perpetuated the idea that man is the most important being on this earth and that everything must be done to ensure that man live comfortably and if the acquisition of material possessions require the destruction of the environment then so be it.

Lovelock pointed out that the utter disregard for the condition of the planet is dangerous not only to the species that are pushed to the brink of extinction but also to human life. It is therefore ironic that in man’s desire to build a city that will sustain the survival of his species he has created a trend that will lead to the destruction of every living organism on this earth. Lovelock provided convincing arguments that the earth is not just a piece of giant rock where man, animals and plants use as their habitat but in reality it is also a living organism. Lovelock said that like the astronauts who had the rare chance of seeing the planet in its entirety, humans must also endeavor to see the whole planet not divided by regions and politics but as one whole, and each part is needed for its survival.

In order to maintain biodiversity one must be prepared for an uphill battle. There is very little incentive to protect the planet much less to protect a seemingly insignificant insect living in an island far away from home. Who really cares if a species of ant in Borneo must be conserved for future generations? Life is so short to be bothered by those kinds of problems. This is the main problem faced by conservationists and scientists who are predicting more problems up ahead. Still this is no excuse to give up the fight. As human population has gone past the 6 billion mark it is time to work harder to find ways on how man and diverse living organisms can share this planet.

Biodiversity is one standard that can be used so that concerned citizens will know if they are winning the battle to save planet earth. It is no longer enough to simply plant trees on denuded mountains. It is no longer enough to protect oceans, rivers and streams from pollution. There is now the urgent need to maintain biodiversity. Biodiversity is about maintaining a fragile ecosystem that relies on different species of flora and fauna to attain sustainability.

A basic example is the relationship between predators and the smaller animals that they prey on. If predators are eliminated from the equation there can be no way to maintain the normal number of animals that they consume for food. An imbalance in this scale can be amplified if other organisms are made extinct. The imbalance can create a chain reaction of events that will lead to the destruction of plants and animals needed by humans. Imagine for a moment if all the bees are dead, then who will take care of pollination? Without thinking of biodiversity in the long term man may experience more serious problems aside from the need to eat hamburgers and fries every weekend.

The views of Cobb and Lovelock are very important to the discussion of biodiversity and the need to rally humans to take a more responsible outlook when it comes to taking care of planet earth. Cobb’s contribution is in pinpointing the root cause of man’s indifference to this issue. Aside from the need to make profit, the average person was made to believe that he is the dominant species on this planet and therefore lower life forms exist to satisfy his needs. This mental hurdle must be dealt first. Wilson’s rhetoric will not make any sense as long as man believes that his survival is of utmost importance.

Lovelock adheres to this view but he finds a better way of convincing people that it is time to change their ways. Lovelock made a convincing argument that flora, fauna, and Homo sapiens are in the same boat. In other words man has no choice but to help because his apathy will lead to his destruction. Lovelock was able to achieve this by pointing out the scientific evidence that the earth is a living organism and that all the organisms in this planet behave in such a way to maintain life on earth. It is just ironic that while plants and animals cooperate in the process of sustaining planet earth, man is ignorant about this truth. It is time to heed the warning of Wilson that there is a need for further investigation and a need to disseminate information about the current state of biodiversity on planet earth.

Essay on Biodiversity: The vast array of animal and plant life in our environment is called biodiversity. The rich flora and fauna that maintain ecological balance are classified under various groups in biodiversity. Conservation of biodiversity is essential for the future of our planet. Due to man’s carelessness, many species turn out to be extinct. Destruction of forests and important species of animals and microorganisms endangers the planet.

Essay on Biodiversity 500 Words in English

Below we have provided Biodiversity Essay in English, suitable for class 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10.

Biodiversity, also referred to as biological diversity is the variations that occur within the environment of many organisms. Such living species include sea, ground, and aquatic life. Biodiversity seeks to recognize the roles in the larger world that these species hold. Diversity is a natural hallmark. Things exist in various forms which create diversity. Biodiversity on the Earth’s surface is an essential and beneficial variability in plant and animal life. Owing to biology, insects, and the ecosystem or habitat, the variability occurs. Biodiversity is an essential feature of the world as it allows living creatures on Earth to flourish and be maintained.

Types of Biodiversity

Based on the individual conditions, the variability in living organisms has resulted in various forms of biodiversity. Genetic variation is due to the standard genetic constituents of living species. Species with identical genes diverge, thereby increasing heterogeneity, and evolve differently. Diversity of organisms occurs when an ecosystem contains various types of living things. Ecological diversity is the interaction of living organisms, which share familiar energy sources in an ecosystem that contributes to biodiversity.

Importance of Biodiversity

Biodiversity’s importance does not lie exclusively in the existence of various species on Earth. This is also of national, political, and economic significance. Biodiversity is of critical importance in maintaining nature’s balance. This is, therefore, important to sustain the food chain. One species may be the food for another species, and through this food chain, different species are related to each other. Apart from this, biodiversity is also of scientific interest.

The research and breeding projects include species diversity if these animals cease to exist, so it would not be possible to provide such programmes. Besides, many plants and animals also make up most of the medications and medicines that are important for the cure of many diseases. For example, penicillin is a fungus from which the antibiotic of penicillin is extracted. Another significant feature of biodiversity is that it provides food for all, including humans.

All the food we consume is either derived from plants or animals like fish and other marine animals. They are also the basis for agricultural practices of new crops, pesticides and the raw material. For industrial usage, biodiversity is also significant. We get a lot of items from animals like fur, honey, leather and pearls. Also, we procure timber for plants which are the source of the paper we use in our everyday lives. Tea, coffee and other beverages, dried fruits and our daily fruits and vegetables are all obtained from the various plants.

Loss of Biodiversity

The biodiversity of the Earth is going through a serious decline, and that is a great danger to the human race. Many factors are contributing to the extinction of biological organisms, the most important being human behaviour. Humans ruin forests for the building of houses and offices. Human beings are in effect, destroying the natural habitat of many plants and animals by deforestation. All new technological advances are dangerous for the environment.

We cannot even find any bird species today because the noise pollution is growing. Global warming is yet another explanation for biodiversity loss. Many species require a different environment for survival and these species either migrate or become extinct as the climatic conditions change continuously. A good example is a decline in the number of coral reefs.

Conservation of Biodiversity

Governments around the world have been taking steps to protect the remaining biodiversity on Earth. There are dedicated national parks, for example, that assign the region to wild animals and plants, and reduce human interference in their lives. To protect the fragile and endangered species, numerous wildlife management initiatives are in place. Project Tiger, for example, is one of those steps in place to increase the tiger population in our country.

Short Essay on Conservation of Biodiversity – Essay 1 (200 words)

Biodiversity refers to the variety of flora and fauna in a given region on earth as a whole. The greater the variety of flora and fauna, the better it is for the survival of different species. This is because it helps in the process of food chain. Different species of animals are dependent upon other species to satiate their hunger while some species are dependent on plants. If one species goes extinct for some reason, those dependent on them for food will also starve to death and we will keep losing various species resulting in decline in the biodiversity. This is what has been happening since a long time especially during the last few decades.

The advancement in technology and various other activities such as industrialization, deforestation, growing pollution, global warming and the ever growing population of human beings are some of the reasons for lowered biodiversity. We are losing numerous species of plants, animals, marine creatures, insects and other organisms each year.

It is imperative to maintain high level of biodiversity. The activities causing a decline in biodiversity have already been identified. We now need to keep a check on all these activities for the conservation of biodiversity. The joint efforts of the government and general public across the globe can help in this direction.

Essay on Biodiversity and Conservation – Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

Biodiversity is vital for the environmental harmony. God has created numerous species of flora and fauna and there is a reason behind these diverse creations. But, we humans seem to have turned a blind eye towards the need to maintain biodiversity and are indulging in various activities that are causing a decline in the same.

What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity, also known as biological diversity or ecological diversity, is the diversity of the species of plants, animals and other living organisms in the world or in a particular habitat. There is a need to maintain rich biodiversity as it helps in maintaining the ecological balance on Earth. This is because each species of flora and fauna has its own role to play in the ecological system to keep it intact.

Why do We Need to Conserve Biodiversity?

Our beautiful planet has given us numerous things that occur here naturally. Natural resources, rivers, valleys, oceans, different species of animals and beautiful varieties of plants and trees are among some of these. But man is so busy growing and developing his own artificial world that he is spoiling these beautiful natural things. Today, we have exploited most of the things that were available abundantly in nature. There is a dire need to conserve these natural things. Among other things, there is a serious need for the conservation of biodiversity.

The requirement to maintain biodiversity has often been overlooked. This is because we think that we are doing well for ourselves, even though many species have gone extinct until now and that we would remain unaffected even if few more go extinct. However, this is a misconception. Richness of biodiversity is essential for the proper functioning of our environment. We would not be able to survive in the times to come if the biodiversity continues to decline.

Humans must keep a check on their activities and stop exploiting flora and fauna for serving their own selfish purposes. They must instead contribute towards the conservation of biodiversity.

Essay on Importance of Conservation of Biodiversity – Essay 3 (400 words)

All the species of plants and animals present on Earth together form biodiversity. We depend upon each other to fulfil various needs so as to live comfortably on this planet. Rich biodiversity is vital for our survival. However, unfortunately it is declining at a fast pace and this may put us in deep trouble in the times to come. Conservation of biodiversity is the need of the hour. We must all contribute towards the same to ensure a comfortable and peaceful life ahead.

Importance of Conservation of Biodiversity

Conservation of biodiversity is important for many reasons. Here are some of the main reasons why we must conserve biodiversity:

  • Process of Food Chain

Different species of animals and plants serve as the source of food for other animals and living organisms. When one species goes extinct or shifts from one habitat to another, it results in different kinds of deficiencies for others species. Some species even starve to death as their main source of food goes extinct. Rich biodiversity thus helps in the process of food chain.

  • Nutritional Needs

We eat different kinds of fruits, vegetables, meats, fishes and other things as they satisfy different nutritional needs for the proper functioning of our body. The decline in the variety of plants and animals would mean the decline in the variety of food we eat and this is likely to result in nutritional deficiencies.

  • Cleaner Air

Trees and plants inhale carbon dioxide and other harmful gases from the atmosphere and exhale the life giving oxygen. Some plants and trees have a greater ability to purify the air and keep the atmosphere clean. The decline in the number and types of trees and plants can impact the quality of air negatively.

  • Better Cultivation of Crops

Many insects, organisms and microorganisms such as earthworms, fungi and bacteria work on different levels and make the soil fertile and maintain its health. Healthy and fertile soil is certainly better for the cultivation of crops. Loss of such species can thus be a great loss for us.

  • For Medical Reasons

Many species of trees and plants are used to derive different medicines to cure various diseases. Many plants serving medicinal purposes have gone extinct in the past and many others are likely to go extinct even before the scientists discover their utility.

Thus, the richness of biodiversity is essential for the survival of living beings on Earth. This issue must be taken up seriously and stern measures must be taken to conserve biodiversity.

Essay on Conservation Methods of Biodiversity – Essay 4 (500 words)

The need for conservation of biodiversity has been stressed upon numerous times as it is of utmost importance for the survival of the mankind and other living beings on Earth. In addition to emphasizing upon the importance and need to protect and conserve biodiversity, it is essential to share the methods to conserve it.

Methods to Conserve Biodiversity

Here are some of the methods that can help in the conservation of biodiversity:

  • Control Population

One of the reasons why biodiversity is declining is because of the growing human population. Trees are being cut and animals are being harmed at a large scale in order to satiate various human needs. The greater the population the higher the needs which would result in further exploitation of flora and fauna and decline in biodiversity. The first and foremost thing that needs to be done for the conservation of biodiversity is to control human population and allow other species of plants and animals to thrive on our planet.

  • Control Pollution

The growing pollution is causing harm to our beautiful planet. The temperature is rising and subsequently causing global warming. The changing climate, deteriorating air quality and the growing amount of pollution on land and in water bodies is leading to different types of diseases in many species and has also caused the extinction of several of them. Many species of flora and fauna are unable to withstand these changes in the atmosphere and it becomes extremely difficult for them to survive. It is essential to cut down on the activities leading to pollution in order to lower it.

  • Keep a Tab on Deforestation

Forests are a habitat for different varieties of flora and fauna. Deforestation has been one of the main reasons for the extinction of numerous wild creatures as well as various beautiful plants. The loss of habitat makes wild animals vulnerable. They are unable to survive in the new environment. While some struggle for survival by shifting to other places others are unable to adapt to new surroundings and die.

  • Avoid Wastage

It is imperative for us to avoid wastage of any kind. Most of the things we use are derived from natural resources. From the electricity we consume, to the fuel we use, from the clothes we wear to the paper we write on, everything has been prepared directly or indirectly from the natural resources. We need to understand that natural resources are not only essential for us but are also vital for the survival of other species. We must thus utilise only as much as we require so that these remain available in abundance in the nature for future use.

  • Spread Awareness

Apart from this, one of the best methods to conserve biodiversity is by spreading awareness. People need to be sensitized about the issue so that they act responsibly and contribute towards conserving biodiversity. The government can do so at a bigger level while we can spread awareness by word of mouth and through social media.

Conservation of biodiversity is extremely important to maintain a healthy environment and ensure a comfortable life for future generations. There are many ways in which we can conserve it. We must all contribute our bit towards conserving the same.

Long Essay on Conservation of Biodiversity – Essay 5 (600 words)

Conservation of biodiversity is vital for maintaining the Earth’s environment and sustaining life on the planet. There are a number of ways in which the richness of biodiversity helps in maintaining the ecological system and serves us. Different kind of foods available fulfils different nutritional needs, plants clean the air, many organisms keep the soil health in check and survival of different species is possible due to the process of food chain. These are some of the examples to show the importance of conserving biodiversity on Earth.

The Decline in Biodiversity

The continual decline in biodiversity has become a cause of concern world over. Many regions in the world have seen a major dip in the biodiversity owing to the changes in climate and increasing pollution levels. This has had a big impact on the other species living in those areas. Biodiversity is declining world over. Research shows that numerous varieties of animals go extinct each year largely due to human activities.

Western Black Rhinoceros, Dodo, Tasmanian tiger, Golden Toad, Woolly Mammoth, Caribbean Monk Seal, Ivory-billed Woodpecker and Japanese Sea Lion are some of the species of animals that have gone extinct. Lemur, Mountain Gorilla, Vaquita, Sea Turtles, Amur Leopard and Tiger are some of the species that are on the verge of extinction. Apart from these many species of plants and trees including Lepidodendron, Araucaria Mirabilis, Wood Cycad and Kokia Cookei have gone extinct and many others are endangered.

Need for Conservation of Biodiversity

If we continue to lose different species of flora and fauna at this speed, our survival will become extremely difficult on Earth. This is because every species of plant and animal either big or small, contributes towards the maintenance of the ecological balance in its own unique way. Loss of these can have a huge impact on the environment as well as other living beings. For instance, we depend on different kind of plants and animals as they serve as a source of food for us.

They satisfy different nutritional needs. Trees provide wood and other raw material that are used to craft numerous things that are vital for us. Similarly, different kinds of herbs are used for preparing medicines. Likewise, different species of insects and animals contribute in their own way in making the environment fit for living. If this richness of diversity is not maintained we shall lose out on many things and it will make our life difficult. This is why it is extremely important to conserve biodiversity.

How Can We Help in the Conservation of Biodiversity?

We as general public can help in the conservation of biodiversity by avoiding wastage of the natural resources. We can also do out bit by avoiding activities that lead to pollution as pollution is the main cause of decline in biodiversity.

Besides, we must plant trees and plants and encourage those around us to do the same. People mostly think that their contribution may not affect much and thus do not make any effort. If each one of us thinks this way we will soon be making life difficult for us. We must contribute our bit towards the conservation of biodiversity. These small contributions can lead to major change over the course of time.

Government’s Role in the Conservation of Biodiversity

The government must sensitize people about the need for conservation of biodiversity through media, hoardings and other means. The government must also keep a tab on the human activities that are causing a decline in the biodiversity. Strict action must be taken against individuals, groups and organizations indulging in these.

Conservation of biodiversity is of utmost importance. We must all make efforts to conserve biodiversity rather than contributing towards its decline.

About this Research Topic

Long-term bird monitoring, ecological research and conservation projects that integrate community involvement, citizen science, capacity-building, outreach, environmental education and local job creation provide some of the best examples of biodiversity monitoring and conservation programs. The goal of this research topic is to provide a global overview and exemplary case studies of long-term (10+ years) bird monitoring, ecological research and conservation projects focused on the effects of global change on tropical bird communities. Long-term and locally based biodiversity monitoring programs are essential for understanding and mitigating the effects of global change on tropical biodiversity while providing capacity-building, environmental education and public outreach. However, these programs are lacking in most tropical countries that harbor most of the world’s biodiversity. Birds are the best-known major group of organisms, comprise excellent environmental indicators, are relatively easy to monitor, and, as charismatic flagship species, are met with enthusiasm and interest by people worldwide. Bird monitoring programs using mist nets and bird banding (ringing) are especially valuable, as these safe and well-established techniques enable the use of capture-mark-recapture (CMR) models to measure population change and other demographic parameters, while making it possible to obtain blood and feather samples for genetic and isotopic analyses, examine the birds for parasites and pathogens, and study home range size, habitat use and movement ecology of the birds by tracking them with geolocators, radio or satellite transmitters. Equally important for conservation, the ability to capture and release birds makes it possible to conduct hands-on ornithological training, environmental education, awareness raising and community outreach activities with students, conservationists, villagers, decision-makers, journalists, and other local people. Bird banding, tracking and nest monitoring programs provide local jobs for research assistants, who often go on to productive careers in conservation, education, research, or ecotourism. The costs involved are relatively modest and most of the money is spent locally on salaries, room, board, and services. Long-term bird banding and ornithological research stations often provide the nuclei, infrastructure, and staff for monitoring, education, and conservation programs focused on other taxa. Bird monitoring and ecological research programs that integrate conservation, ecological research, environmental education, capacity-building, and income generation are cost-effective tools to achieve the goals of community-based biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction in the developing world. Such locally based and long-term bird monitoring programs should be encouraged, established, and supported throughout the tropics. For this special issue, we will especially solicit long-term (10+ years) research papers that: • Take place in understudied regions and work with underserved communities, • Focus on the impacts of climate change, infectious diseases and other emerging threats, • Investigate particularly susceptible avian taxa and the reasons for their declines, • Address the ecological implications of these declines, including reductions in scavenging, seed dispersal, pollination, predation, nutrient deposition and ecosystem engineering, • Study bird populations with banding, nest monitoring or geolocator/radio/satellite-tracking, and • Provide examples of best practice in integrating avian conservation and ecology research with community-based conservation, citizen science, capacity-building, and environmental education.
