Longevity expert shares his 7 habits to live a longer, healthier life

Living a long, healthy life may seem like it requires winning a genetic lottery, but there’s so much more under your control than you realize.

Only 25% of our probability of living a longer life is due to inherited genes, while 75% is due to environmental factors, says Dr. Luigi Fontana, professor of medicine and nutrition, and director of the healthy longevity research program at The University of Sydney in Australia.

“So the idea that your genes are the most important factor in shaping your longevity is wrong,” Fontana tells TODAY.com.

“In 2023, we have the knowledge to design a fantastic world where people are healthy. The probability of getting sick is still there because biology is not an exact science, but the risk is very low if you are living a healthy lifestyle.”

Fontana outlines some of the ways to activate the body’s longevity pathways in his new book, “ Manual of Healthy Longevity & Wellbeing. ”

The goal is to prevent age-related chronic diseases like heart disease. As people get older, they accumulate damage because the systems controlling the body’s ability to repair itself are getting weaker — but certain lifestyle choices can slow down this process, Fontana notes.

He believes up to 95% of cardiovascular disease and 70% of cancer cases are preventable based on his studies on exercise, calorie restriction and high-quality diets.

But Fontana worries prevention isn’t even taught in medical schools, with doctors focusing on diagnosing diseases and treating them mostly with drugs and surgery.

Here are some of the habits the longevity expert recommends for a longer life:

Monitor your waist size and keep it in check

This is even more important than keeping track of your weight because every extra inch in your waistline means an accumulation of belly fat , the worst type of body fat, Fontana says.

Known as visceral fat, it promotes inflammation, which is a major factor for aging, cancer, cardiovascular disease and many other chronic diseases, he warns.

Excess abdominal fat also triggers insulin resistance and metabolic abnormalities, he adds.

“Every centimeter you lose, you are reducing all these factors,” Fontana notes. “It’s doable with exercise and a healthy diet.”

He advises women to have a waist measurement of less than 31.5 inches and men less than 37 inches.

It’s still important to monitor for weight gain and deal with it quickly. But weight is not the best measure because ideally you want to reduce waist circumference while increasing muscle mass, especially in the legs and glutes — the most powerful muscles in the body, Fontana says.

Don’t eat ‘everything in moderation’

“People say, ‘Nothing is bad. You can eat some of everything.’ I disagree. It’s like saying, ‘I can have a couple of cigarettes in moderation,’” Fontana cautions.

“Everything in moderation” is not a dietary rule you should follow for maximum longevity, he writes in his book. Remove as much junk food, ultra-processed food , refined grains and sugary drinks from your diet as possible. There is no moderation with these foods.

Eat beans every day

Fontana follows the Mediterranean diet as the basis for his healthy longevity eating plan.

Along with beans, Fontana’s food pyramid calls for eating a wide variety of colorful vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, low-fat yogurt, olive oil and avocado every day.

He recommends eating fish two to three times a week, and enjoying small portions of cheese and a few eggs once or twice a week.

Meats or sweets should only be eaten occasionally.

Fontana always buys organic produce when he can to minimize his exposure to pesticides. “But if you tell me, ‘I cannot afford organic. What should I do?’ (I say) eat as many vegetables, whole grains and beans as you can, even if they’re not organic.”

He doesn’t take any supplements since he gets his nutrients from high quality food. The only exception was a daily vitamin D supplement in the winter when he lived in the U.S. to make up for the lack of sunshine.

Consider exercise the wonder drug for healthy longevity

Humans and their molecular pathways have evolved over thousands of years with a lot of exercise — walking everywhere, carrying wood, getting water from the well — so the modern sedentary lifestyle is not natural, Fontana warns.

He exercises every day, alternating mountain biking with swimming and weight lifting. An hour of aerobic exercise every day is ideal, but shorter bouts spread throughout the day can provide benefits, he writes in his book.

Exercise reduces triglycerides and LDL “bad” cholesterol, and increases HDL “good” cholesterol, Fontana notes. It reduces blood pressure and has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity.

When you exercise, you increase mitochondria — the “ energy powerhouse of the cell ” — in your muscle. Mitochondria are essential to burn fat, so you not only you build muscle mass, but burn more calories.

Exercise also increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is important for memory and is a powerful antidepressant molecule, Fontana says.

Go easy on the alcohol

Fontana doesn’t drink any alcohol. Studies suggest it’s not good for longevity and even small doses increase the risk of cancer , he notes.

“There is no evidence that resveratrol in wine is going to make you live longer,” he says.

“If you enjoy your beer and your glass of wine, that’s fine. But you should drink these occasionally… use it as a treat, not as a regular daily use.”

Give your body a break from eating

When you eat, the calories get transformed into glucose, which activates the production of insulin.

Between snacks and bigger meals, people end up being in a constant high-insulin environment for many hours of the day. That’s not normal physiologically and triggers pro-aging pathways, Fontana says.

Try to eat your calories within a restricted window, perhaps 10 hours , so that for the remaining hours of the day, your insulin and your glucose are low, he advises.

It’s OK to be a little hungry. It means the body is secreting the hunger hormone ghrelin, which inhibits inflammation.

“If you feel some hunger, don’t run immediately to eat something. If you can, just wait because you know you are activating this anti-inflammatory pathway,” Fontana says.

Think of your body as a Ferrari

Even a beautiful new sports car will develop problems if you don’t maintain it. But if you know how to take care of it, the car will last a long time.

It’s the same with your body, though maintenance in this case means a healthy diet and regular exercise.

“People say, ‘Who cares? I want to enjoy my life. I want to drink my wine. I want to stay on the couch eating chips,’” Fontana notes.

“Yes, you can drive your Ferrari without changing the oil. It’s up to you. But you need to know that your Ferrari will start to have problems.”

The Bottom Line

While the Mediterranean diet tends to get most of the glory in the health landscape—as the best diet of 2023 , as a way of life that's ideal to support heart health and as a terrific option for individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes —it's not the only lifestyle that can help boost longevity.

There are people from a handful of communities across the globe who live just as long, says Dan Buettner , a Miami-based National Geographic fellow and the author of The Blue Zones American Kitchen . As the founder of the Blue Zones project in 2000, he pulled together medical researchers, anthropologists, demographers and epidemiologists to help distill data from the world's longest-lived people to discover their secrets, Buettner tells EatingWell . The Blue Zones team has built upon those conclusions using evidence-based data for the past 20 years to land on several lifestyle factors that play into longevity.

It's not just about genetics, Buettner adds, citing the 1996 Danish Twin Study published in Human Genetics, which established that only about 20% of how long a person lives is based on genetics.

"This leaves the other 80% up to lifestyle and environment. So while genetics can play a role, it's important for people to focus more on what they can control or change and setting up their routine and environments," he says.

What Are the Blue Zones, And How Do They Compare to the Average American Lifestyle?

There are five known Blue Zones in the world, and just two of them are considered part of the Mediterranean region:

  • Okinawa, Japan
  • Nicoya, Costa Rica
  • Ikaria, Greece
  • Loma Linda, California
  • Sardinia, Italy

"In these five regions, the population overwhelmingly lives to be 100 years or older. Not only that, but these folks are living healthier—not just longer—lives," says Caroline Thomason, RD, CDCES , a Warrenton, Virginia-based registered dietitian who helps women stop dieting and find confidence with food. "While folks in the U.S. live to be much older than in previous generations, we certainly are not always in good health at the end of our days."

So what do these sage folks in the Blue Zones do daily to live longer, healthier and more vibrant lives?

6 Healthy Habits to Help You Live Longer

"You become what you do," the old adage goes, and daily routines do add up to move the needle toward (or away from) well-being. That said, you shouldn't take everything into your own hands and abandon expert intel and regular checkups , advises Margaret Fruhbauer, D.O. , a board-certified internal medicine doctor with Northwest Community Healthcare in Buffalo Grove, Illinois.

"Preventive care such as cancer screenings through the form of colonoscopies, mammograms, pap smears and CT lung cancer screenings can catch diseases earlier. Treating medical conditions, diseases or illnesses early in the development may reduce physical, financial and emotional stress rather than delaying care. Mental health counseling can be extremely beneficial, too," Fruhbauer says.

1. Don't "Diet"—Instead, Eat Until You're Mostly Satisfied

Skip the detox or cleanse, and instead, try to follow "hara hachi bu" as you keep a wide variety of nutritious—and local, if possible—foods in the mix. This mindset is a key factor in Okinawa, where this 2,500-year-old Confucian mantra reminds locals to enjoy meals and snacks until their stomachs are 80% full, rather than counting calories or crash dieting.

"Almost all of the foods consumed by centenarians in the Blue Zones grow within a 10-mile radius of their homes," Buettner says, but any whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, fruits and vegetables will serve your health well.

According to a February 2022 meta-analysis in the journal PLOS Medicine , those who "adopt a diet of whole grains, legumes, fish, fruits, vegetables and a handful of nuts, while reducing red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages and refined grains" starting at age 20 may be able to add more than 10 years to their life expectancy. Of course we can't control all health outcomes, and healthy eating isn't a cure-all, but even if a person started these strategies at 60, the data suggest they might expect to add about 8½ years to their life.

Consider frozen, canned or fermented foods if your fresh faves aren't accessible. And if you're not sure where to start, Fruhbauer suggests outsourcing, asking for help and tapping tools that make healthy eating easier, such as local food access organizations or a dietitian affiliated with your doctor's office.

"There are many meal delivery services that focus on healthy eating. Many of my patients have found that using a slow cooker, Instant Pot or air fryer can make meal prep easier," she says. Try to make it a team effort: "Incorporating the family into decisions about meal planning and food prep can help."

2. Limit Added Sugars

Eating less ultra-processed food will likely mean you'll naturally consume fewer grams of added sugars. Buettner confirms that people in the Blue Zones eat sugar intentionally, not by habit or accident.

"They consume about the same amount of naturally occurring sugars as North Americans do, but only about a fifth as much added sugar—no more than 7 teaspoons of sugar a day," he says.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American adults, on average, consume about 17 teaspoons of added sugar each day, which is more than two to three times the amount recommended. Much of this added sugar hides out in sneaky sources like sugar-sweetened drinks, yogurt, breakfast cereal and plant-based milk, to name a few.

3. Cook More at Home

About 60% of Americans eat dinner out at least once each week, the CDC estimates, and a 2019 survey by the research group Fourth found that 10% eat out four to six times per week.

While those living in the Blue Zones occasionally dine out, they're known to take pride in making cooking an event. For instance, in some households, meals often come with multiple courses of family recipes made with love.

When cooking more at home, you will have more control over the ingredients you use, you may naturally eat a smaller portion, and you'll score the stress-relieving benefits of creating something from scratch. Plus, compared to peers who eat out less than one meal per week, individuals who frequently eat meals prepared away from home, two or more meals per day, may have a higher risk of all-cause mortality, shows a 2021 study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics .

4. Share Food With Others

Now that you've cooked your meal, you can score even more wellness gains by sharing it with others.

"The world's longest-lived people chose—or were born into—social circles that supported healthy behaviors," Buettner says. "Okinawans created 'moais,' or groups of five friends that committed to each other for life. Research from the Framingham Studies shows that smoking, obesity, happiness and even loneliness are contagious too. The social networks of long-lived people have favorably shaped their health behaviors."A February 2021 meta-analysis in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that families who share meals tend to consume more fruits, vegetables and health-promoting nutrients. The quality of the nutrition isn't the only benefit; a March 2017 study in the journalAdaptive Human Behavior and Physiology reports that dining with friends or family is linked with feeling happier, more engaged with the community, more satisfied with life, more trusting of others and laughing more.

5. Incorporate Activity Into Your Daily Life

"The world's longest-lived people don't pump iron, run marathons or join gyms. Instead, they live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving without thinking about it," Buettner reveals. Things like tending to the garden and keeping up with house and yard work without high-tech tools add in significant daily movement.

Whether you find joy in hiking while listening to your favorite podcast, prefer to tend your vegetable garden or enjoy walking around the neighborhood to chill out after a long day, moving more has been shown to improve mood through the boost of natural "feel-good" neurotransmitters known as endorphins. Cardio, resistance training, yoga, tai chi, Pilates or any activity can bolster balance, increase strength, burn calories and reduce the risk for depression, heart disease and more, according to Fruhbauer. Your local community center may offer fun classes you could attend.

"Many times people will say they don't have time to exercise," she says, but you need not commit to 60 or even 30 minutes. In fact, a mere 2-minute walk after a meal can help balance blood sugar . When possible, she says, "I encourage my patients to go for a walk on their lunch breaks or try light weight lifting while watching your favorite TV show in the morning or evening."

6. Prioritize Sleep and Stress-Relief

Chronic sleep deprivation can increase everything from pain related to migraines and fibromyalgia to risk for heart disease and cancer, Fruhbauer explains.

Buettner adds that a constant or frequent barrage of stressors (ahem, constant phone pings and frightening or tension-filled news updates) can trigger chronic inflammation , which is associated with every major age-related disease.

According to Buettner, many people in the long-lived Blue Zone communities have common routines that help shed stress, such as taking a few moments to remember their ancestors, praying, taking naps and gathering for happy hours. Many of these involve some aspect of social community, which can amplify the benefits.

Fruhbauer suggests scheduling time for self-care, just like you might coordinate an oil change or haircut in advance. She believes that creating a commitment three days per week for even 15 minutes can make an impact over time.

Walking, meditation and breathing are science-backed and free ways to reduce stress and also promote sounder sleep. Taking a break from electronic devices 30 to 60 minutes before snooze time, eating more sleep-supporting foods and following bedroom design tips can all make a big difference in your rest success.

The Blue Zones are five regions around the world that are home to the most centenarians, or people who live to age 100 or older. Those who live the longest and strongest usually live in environments that nudge them daily to move, eat nutritious foods (mostly plants) and focus on sleep and stress management.

While the Blue Zones environment is often set up so that the healthy choice is the easy choice, you don't need to rely on sheer willpower to make these healthy changes for longevity, Buettner says. Instead, try to sprinkle in numerous small changes to your daily routine and environment to promote well-being, and surround yourself with like-minded friends who appreciate joyful movement. Seek out methods of self-care that are easy to slide into your daily routine, and try tweaks for better sleep in one week .

"As you continue to make these small changes over time, you will curate an environment that promotes your health and well-being," Buettner concludes.

Everyone wants to live longer. And we’re often told that the key to doing this is making healthier lifestyle choices, such as exercising, avoiding smoking and not drinking too much alcohol. Studies have also shown that diet can increase lifespan .

A new study has found that eating healthier could extend lifespan by six to seven years in middle-aged age adults, and in young adults, could increase lifespan by about ten years.

The researchers brought together data from many studies that looked at diet and longevity, alongside data from the Global Burden of Disease study, which provides a summary of population health from many countries. Combining this data, the authors were then able to estimate how life expectancy varied with continuous changes in intake of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, refined grains, nuts, legumes, fish, eggs, dairy, red meat, processed meat and sugary drinks.

The authors were then able to produce an optimal diet for longevity, which they then compared with the typical western diet – which mostly contains high amounts of processed foods, red meat, high-fat dairy products, high-sugar foods, pre-packed foods and low fruit and vegetable intake. According to their research, an optimal diet included more legumes (beans, peas and lentils), whole grains (oats, barley and brown rice) and nuts, and less red and processed meat.

The researchers found that eating an optimal diet from age 20 would increase life expectancy by more than a decade for women and men from the US, China and Europe. They also found that changing from a western diet to the optimal diet at age 60 would increase life expectancy by eight years. For 80-year-olds, life expectancy could increase by almost three and a half years.

But given it isn’t always possible for people to completely change their diet, the researchers also calculated what would happen if people changed from a western diet to a diet that was halfway between the optimal diet and the typical western diet. They found that even this kind of diet – which they called a “feasibility approach diet” – could still increase life expectancy for 20-year-olds by just over six years for women and just over seven years for men.

A table which shows how many grams of each food group a person should aim to consume on each of the three diets the researchers looked at in their study.

These results show us that making long-term diet changes at any age may have substantial benefits to life expectancy. But the gains are largest if these changes start early in life.

Full picture?

The life expectancy estimates this study makes come from the most thorough and recent meta-analyses (a study that combines the results of multiple scientific studies) on diet and mortality.

While meta-analyses are, in many cases, the best evidence because of the amount of data analysed, they still produce assumptions with the data, which may cause important differences between studies to be ignored. It’s also worth noting that the evidence for reducing consumption of eggs and white meat was of a lower quality than the evidence they had for whole grains, fish, processed meats and nuts.

There are also a few things the study didn’t take into account. First, to see these benefits, people needed to make changes to their diet within a ten-year period. This means it’s uncertain if people may still see benefits to their lifespan if they make changes to their diet over a longer period of time. The study also didn’t take past ill-health into account, which can affect life expectancy. This means that the benefits of diet on life expectancy only reflect an average and may be different for each person depending on a variety of other factors, such as ongoing health issues, genetics and lifestyle, such as smoking, drinking alcohol and exercise.

But the evidence the researchers looked at was still robust and drawn from many studies on this subject. These findings also align with previous research which has shown that modest but long-term improvements to diet and lifestyle can have significant health benefits – including longevity.

It’s not yet entirely clear all the mechanisms that explain why diet can improve lifespan. But the optimal diet that the researchers uncovered in this study includes many foods that are high in antioxidants. Some research in human cells suggests that these substances may slow or prevent damage to cells, which is one cause of ageing. However, research in this area is still ongoing, so it’s uncertain whether antioxidants that we consume as part of our diet will have the same effect. Many of the foods included within this study also have anti-inflammatory properties, which may also delay the onset of various diseases – and the ageing process.

Of course, changing your diet completely can be difficult. But even introducing some of the foods shown to increase longevity may still have some benefit.

  • Humans have long wondered how to live happier, healthier and ultimately longer lives.
  • Here two scientists explain five known ways to increase life expectancy.
  • They include a healthy diet, an active lifestyle and also the effectiveness of some drugs.

Most people want to live a long and happy life – or at least avoid a short and miserable one. If you’re in that majority, then you’re in luck. Over the last decade, a quiet research revolution has occurred in our understanding of the biology of ageing.

The challenge is to turn this knowledge into advice and treatments we can benefit from. Here we bust the myth that lengthening healthy life expectancy is science fiction, and show that it is instead scientific fact.

1. Nutrition and lifestyle

There’s plenty of evidence for the benefits of doing the boring stuff, such as eating right. A study of large groups of ordinary people show that keeping the weight off, not smoking, restricting alcohol to moderate amounts and eating at least five servings of fruit and vegetable a day can increase your life expectancy by seven to 14 years compared with someone who smokes, drinks too much and is overweight.

Cutting down calories even more - by about a third, so-called dietary restriction - improves health and extends life in mice and monkeys, as long as they eat the right stuff, though that’s a tough ask for people constantly exposed to food temptation. The less extreme versions of time-restricted or intermittent fasting – only eating during an eight-hour window each day, or fasting for two days every week – is thought to reduce the risk of middle-aged people getting age-related diseases.

2. Physical activity

You can’t outrun a bad diet, but that doesn’t mean that exercise does not do good things. Globally, inactivity directly causes roughly 10% of all premature deaths from chronic diseases , such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes and various cancers. If everyone on Earth got enough exercise tomorrow, the effect would probably be to increase healthy human life expectancy by almost a year.

But how much exercise is optimal? Very high levels are actually bad for you, not simply in terms of torn muscles or sprained ligaments. It can suppress the immune system and increase the risk of upper respiratory illness. Just over 30 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity is enough for most people. Not only does that make you stronger and fitter, it has been shown to reduce harmful inflammation and even improve mood.

3. Boosting the immune system

However fit you are and well you eat, your immune system will, unfortunately, get less effective as you get older. Poor responses to vaccination and an inability to fight infection are consequences of this “immunosenescence”. It all starts to go downhill in early adulthood when the thymus – a bowtie-shaped organ in your throat – starts to wither.

That sounds bad, but it’s even more alarming when you realise that the thymus is where immune agents called T cells learn to fight infections. Closing such a major education centre for T cells means that they can’t learn to recognise new infections or fight off cancer effectively in older people.

You can help – a bit – by making sure you have enough key vitamins, especially A and D. A promising area of research is looking at signals that the body sends to help make more immune cells, particularly a molecule called IL-7 . We may soon be able to produce drugs that contain this molecule , potentially boosting the immune system in older people. Another approach is to use the food supplement spermidine to trigger immune cells to clear out their internal garbage, such as damaged proteins, which improves the elderly immune system so much that it’s now being tested as a way of getting better responses to COVID vaccines in older people.

4. Rejuvenating cells

Senescence is a toxic state that cells enter into as we get older, wreaking havoc across the body and generating chronic low-grade inflammation and disease – essentially causing biological ageing. In 2009, scientists showed that middle-aged mice lived longer and stayed healthier if they were given small amounts of a drug called rapamycin, which inhibits a key protein called mTOR that helps regulate cells’ response to nutrients, stress, hormones and damage.

In the lab, drugs like rapamycin (called mTOR inhibitors) make senescent (aged) human cells look and behave like their younger selves . Though it’s too early to prescribe these drugs for general use, a new clinical trial has just been set up to test whether low-dose rapamycin can really slow down ageing in people .

Discovered in the soil of Easter Island, Chile, rapamycin carries with it significant mystique and [has been hailed] in the popular press as a possible “elixir of youth”. It can even improve the memory of mice with dementia-like disease.

But all drugs come with pros and cons – and as too much rapamycin suppresses the immune system, many doctors are averse to even consider it to stave off age-related diseases. However, the dose is critical and newer drugs such as RTB101 that work in a similar way to rapamycin support the immune system in older people, and can even reduce COVID infection rates and severity.

Completely getting rid of senescent cells is another promising way forward. A growing number of lab studies in mice using drugs to kill senescent cells - so-called “senolytics” - show overall improvements in health, and as the mice aren’t dying of disease, they end up living longer too .

Removing senescent cells also helps people. In a small clinical trial, people with severe lung fibrosis reported better overall function, including how far and fast they could walk, after they had been treated with senolytic drugs. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. Diabetes and obesity, as well as infection with some bacteria and viruses, can lead to more senescent cells forming. Senescent cells also make the lungs more susceptible to COVID infection, and COVID makes more cells become senescent . Importantly, getting rid of senescent cells in old mice helps them to survive COVID infection .

Ageing and infection are a two-way street. Older people get more infectious diseases as their immune systems start to run out of steam, while infection drives faster ageing through senescence. Since ageing and senescence are inextricably linked with both chronic and infectious diseases in older people, treating senescence is likely to improve health across the board.

It is exciting that some of these new treatments are already looking good in clinical trials and may be available to us all soon.

Healthy habits can lengthen life

American don’t live as long as people in most other high-income countries. Heart disease and cancer are two of the most common preventable chronic diseases in the United States. An unhealthy lifestyle increases your risk for these and other chronic diseases that can lead to an early death.

To explore the effects of healthy habits on Americans’ health and lifespan, a team of scientists led by Frank Hu at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health analyzed data from more than 78,000 women and 44,000 men who participated in two nationwide surveys: the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS). They used other data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to estimate the distribution of lifestyle choices and death rates across the U.S. population. The research was supported in part by NIH’s National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and National Cancer Institute (NCI). Results were published online in Circulation on April 30, 2018 .

The team collected data on five different low-risk lifestyle factors and compared health outcomes for those who adopted all five with those who didn’t adopt any. The five factors included maintaining a healthy eating pattern (getting the daily recommended amounts of vegetables, fruit, nuts, whole grains, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and omega-3 fatty acids and limiting red and processed meats, beverages with added sugar, trans fat, and sodium); not smoking; getting at least 3.5 hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week; drinking only moderate amounts of alcohol (one drink or less per day for women or two drinks or less per day for men); and maintaining a normal weight (body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9). The researchers also collected information about the participants’ medical history, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, as well as when they died.

At age 50, women who didn’t adopt any of the five healthy habits were estimated to live on average until they were 79 years old and men until they were 75.5 years. In contrast, women who adopted all five healthy lifestyle habits lived 93.1 years and men lived 87.6 years.

Independently, each of the five healthy lifestyle factors significantly lowered the risk of total death, death from cancer, and death from heart disease.

“This study underscores the importance of following healthy lifestyle habits for improving longevity in the U.S. population,” Hu says. “However, adherence to healthy lifestyle habits is very low. Therefore, public policies should put more emphasis on creating healthy food, built, and social environments to support and promote healthy diet and lifestyles.”

Scientists Calculated How Much Longer You Can Live With a Healthy Lifestyle

S tudy after study reminds us that as challenging as it can be, sticking with healthy habits— eating right , exercising regularly, not smoking , maintaining a healthy weight , and controlling how much alcohol you drink—can help us to live longer . But tacking on extra years isn’t so appealing if some or most of them are riddled with heart disease, diabetes or cancer.

In a 2018 study , an international group of researchers led by scientists at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that adopting five healthy habits could extend life expectancy by 14 years for women and by 12 years for men:

  • eating a diet high in plants and low in fats
  • exercising at a moderate to vigorous level for several hours a week
  • maintaining a healthy body weight
  • not smoking
  • consuming no more than one alcoholic drink a day for women and two for men

To follow up on that data, the researchers wanted to know how many of those added years were healthy ones, free of three common chronic diseases: heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. And in a study published Jan. 8 in BMJ , they report that a healthy lifestyle can indeed contribute to more—and more disease-free—years of life. The results suggest that women can extend their disease-free life expectancy after age 50 by about 10 years, and men can add about eight years more, than people who don’t have these habits.

“It’s important to look at disease-free life expectancy because that has important implications in terms of improving quality of life and reducing overall health care costs,” says Dr. Frank Hu, chair of the department of nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and senior author of the paper. “Extending lifespan is not sufficient, we want to extend health span, so the longer life expectancy is healthy and free of major chronic diseases and disabilities associated with those diseases.”

To figure out those patterns, the researchers analyzed data collected from more than 111,000 U.S. women and men who were between the ages of 30 and 75 when they enrolled in the Nurses Health Study or the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study beginning in 1980 and 1986, respectively. The participants answered questionnaires about their lifestyle habits and their health every two years through to 2014. Based on their answers, each participant was given a “lifestyle” score from 0-5, with higher scores representing better adherence to healthy guidelines. The researchers then attempted to correlate these scores to how long the participants lived without heart disease, cancer or diabetes.

Women who reported satisfying four or five of the healthy habits lived on average 34 more years without those diseases after age 50 compared to 24 years for women who said they did not follow any of the healthy habits. Men who reported fulfilling four or five of the lifestyle habits lived on average 31 more years free of disease after age 50 while those who adopted none of them lived on average 23 more years after age 50.

Hu says that none of the five factors stood out as more important than the others; the benefits in saving people from disease and in extending life were similar across all five. Further, the evidence suggests that the contributions of each factor are additive—the number of years of disease-free life gained increased with each additional healthy habit people followed. “People shouldn’t be discouraged from adopting them if they find one or two factors difficult to follow,” says Hu.

And because all of the participants in the study were over age 30, the findings also suggest that “it’s never too late to change,” Hu says. “It’s always better to adopt healthy lifestyle habits as early as possible, but even adopting them relatively late in life is still going to have substantial health benefits later on.”

I grew up in Italy and have studied longevity for 35 years—this is the No. 1 way to eat for a long, healthy life

Valter Longo has been studying longevity in Italy for nearly 20 years, but having grown up in regions like Molochio, Calabria , he would say he's been interested in how to live longer basically all of his life.

In 1989, Longo officially started researching what it takes to make it to age 100 and beyond. Now, he's the director of the Longevity and Cancer Laboratory at the IFOM Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan, Italy.

Longo is also the director of the Longevity Institute of the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California-Los Angeles.

Italy is the perfect place for Longo's work, as its home to several areas where people live longer than most including Sardinia, which is the one of the first regions longevity researcher Dan Buettner designated as a " Blue Zone ."

One of Longo's biggest takeaways in his studies is that "diet is by far the most important."

Here's what Longo says is the best way to eat for longevity.

The longevity diet I follow

"I recommend what I call the longevity diet, which takes from lots of different things," Longo tells CNBC Make it. "Both the Okinawa diet and the Mediterranean diet ."

Ideally, the longevity diet that Longo suggests will follow these characteristics:

  • Mostly vegan
  • Relatively low fruit intake, but high vegetable intake
  • Whole grains
  • Fish three or four times a week

From ages 20 to 70, he also recommends that people eat "no red meat, no white meat, maybe two, three eggs a week, at most, very little cheese [and] very little animal-based products."

The 5 problematic Ps I avoid

There are foods that Longo suggests limiting — he calls them the five problematic Ps.

They include:

  • Pane (bread)

"I think they're very good ingredients. They just happen to be problematic," he says, "because people just eat tons of it, and they become sugar very quickly, almost as quickly as table sugar."

Longo also believes that fasting in a safe way contributes to longevity — "I recommended 12 hours of fasting daily. Let's say you eat between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. [or] 7 a.m. [and] 7 p.m." — and is a proponent of periodically implementing a fasting-mimicking diet for five days at a time.

The fasting-mimicking diet involves eating a diet "high in unsaturated fats and low in overall calories, protein and carbohydrates," according to the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology .

A recent study published in the journal Nature Communications (in which Longo was a senior author) found that the health of mice — adhering to the fasting-mimicking diet — was associated with reduced biological age and a lower risk of developing diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart conditions.

Longo says, "Those periods of fasting were probably key to maintaining functionality and staying younger."

It may be an uncomfortable truth for some, but those who think exercise and diet are not fundamental to longevity are unfortunately mistaken. For the vast majority of people, eating well and moving more will directly result in living a longer, healthier and happier life. 

The impact of our lifestyle choices on our health is extremely well documented. Since at least the 1960s, science has shown repeatedly that eating the right foods in the correct amount, combined with regular physical activity, reduces the risk of developing a wide range of health conditions and associated complications. The consensus among the scientific and medical community is clear, and to suggest otherwise is mere speculation. 

Diet and exercise are interlinked; they go hand in hand. Poor nutrition inhibits the body from reaping the full benefits of physical activity, while a sedentary lifestyle often increases the desire to eat unhealthy foods – thus creating a vicious circle and accelerating weight gain. On the other hand, consuming healthy foods empowers the human body to perform better, thus making exercise more enjoyable – which, in turn, reduces cravings for junk food. With improved metabolism comes psychological benefits, too; among them are the release of endorphins, which contribute to a more positive mood, a reduction in stress and a higher quality of sleep. 

To conclude, it is indisputable that lifestyle makes a significant impact on our health and wellbeing, both physically and psychologically. I therefore strongly disagree with the idea that you can live a long, healthy life without eating well and exercising often.

However, just to satisfy our taste buds we are risking our health. You may feel more satisfied after having junk food but that is just the feeling of fullness and nothing else. Consumption of junk food leads to poor concentration. Moreover, you may also get digestive problems as junk food does not have fiber which helps indigestion.

What is the secret to–if not eternal life, then a long one, that’s also well-lived? Kathleen Baird-Murray asks the experts for their tips on how to live longer and prioritizing your health.

1. The goal: 10 extra years of a life you love

“We have improved longevity,” says Professor Tim Spector OBE, genetic epidemiologist, author of The New Science of Eating Well , and the scientific co-founder of ZOE , the personalized nutrition company “but we haven’t really improved health span.” There’s a lot that medical science can do to save your life, but for chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, dementia, strokes, and cancers, we need to be better equipped at helping ourselves. Spector argues that it can be slow to getting a diagnosis and treatment, with the real reason for cancer statistics going up having more to do with the fact that our lifestyles are getting worse. “The best thing we can do is change our mindset. Rather than just waiting for our bodies to fall apart, and then have slightly ineffective treatments, the mindset needs to be, “How can I have ten extra years of healthy life, of a life that I can enjoy?”

2. Knowledge is power

“Our genetic make-up is only a possibility of risks,” says Dr Sabine Donnai, founder and CEO of Viavi Health Strategy . “Think of it like playing cards. The hand you’ve been dealt with–your genetic makeup–is the cards, so play it cleverly. That starts with looking at your cards, and understanding the rules of the game.” Her own four “non-negotiable” rules are: avoiding sugars, supplementing with Vitamin D and Omega3, maintaining (or increasing) muscle mass and meditation. Donnai advises her patients to opt for two types of tests when seeking an understanding of their longevity potential: those that measure the onset of chronic disease (glucose, insulin, GSP, low density lipoprotein or cholesterol, body mass index and blood level indicators of inflammation); and those that measure different biological ages, for which she favours the Dunedin speed of ageing test. 4. Avoid ultra-processed foods

Meanwhile, avoid processed foods at all costs. We don’t have the full data yet, it’s still fairly new, but if you combine the epidemic of ultra-processed food and our lack of gut health, these have the biggest impact on our health span and lifespan.”

5. A smoothie for life

“This smoothie always makes me feel great, I’m full for hours and it feels nourishing for my body,” says Rhian Stephenson, the Nutritional Therapist and Naturopath who founded the supplements brand ARTAH. Stephenson swears by blood sugar management, food quality, and what she calls a “longevity-focused cleanse” twice a year, where she focuses on cellular repair and rejuvenation, to keep healthy.

Each of the smoothie ingredients has a part to play. A few slices of peeled turmeric and ginger have anti-inflammatory qualities; one tablespoon of chia seeds provides amino acids and fiber; one avocado is a healthy source of fat; two medjool dates add fiber; three handfuls of mixed dark frozen fruit and a handful of greens are rich in vitamins, minerals and polyphenols. Stephenson also adds a dose of Artah Cellular Hydration , for essential electrolytes, extra Vitamin C and adaptogenic Maca. Blend with 250 mls of water and 250 mls of plant milk, adding more water if needed. Serves two.

6. Look after your teeth

Look after your teeth; gum disease, an indicator of chronic inflammation, is increasingly linked to a wide range of health problems, from Alzheimer’s to heart disease and diabetes. Dr Milad Shadrooh , Oral-B Dentist Ambassador, recommends brushing with an electric toothbrush twice daily for two minutes before breakfast and then again before bed at night as well as once-daily rinsing with a good mouthwash, and once-daily flossing using interdental brushes or an oral irrigator. “You also need a good toothpaste with the right amount of fluoride–1450ppm for adults–as this will reduce the potential for tooth decay,” he says. “It is important not to swallow the toothpaste, but instead to spit out the excess. Don’t rinse afterwards, that way the fluoride continues to protect the teeth.”

As well as avoiding sugar in your diet, smoking–including vaping–is a big no-no. “We are now starting to see research that shows the negative effects of vaping on our oral health. Those who smoke are at a much higher risk of developing gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer.”

7. Weight training is key

“As the years go by, you need to try harder to keep up your muscle mass,” says Dr Donnai. “Weight training will increase your growth hormone production, as well as collagen, sex hormones, energy, and help you to destress and keep your body fat down.”

8. Ice, ice baby

From plunging your face in cold water (I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re prone to broken capillaries or rosacea) to cold showers, to state of the art cryo-chambers, there’s an ice bath out there for you. Nobody likes waking up alone in the dark with a panic attack but is it even worse if there is someone there who couldn’t care less?”

10. Goodnight, sleep tight

Do as yogis do and push the cyclic pattern of negative attitudes far away so that tomorrow will be an even better day. “It’s an uncompromising step to developing a long life,” says Sandeep Agarwalla Premananda, Head of Yoga at the Ananda in the Himalayas. He suggests a Review of the Day–where we “watch” our days’ actions and behaviors before going to sleep. “The practice makes you aware of your limitations and puts a conscious break to negative patterns.”

To Live Past 100, Mangia a Lot Less: Italian Expert’s Ideas on Aging

Valter Longo, who wants to live to a healthy 120 or 130, sees the key to longevity in diet — legumes and fish — and faux fasting.

Most members of the band subscribed to a live-fast-die-young lifestyle. But as they partook in the drinking and drugging endemic to the 1990s grunge scene after shows at the Whisky a Go Go, Roxy and other West Coast clubs, the band’s guitarist, Valter Longo, a nutrition-obsessed Italian Ph.D. student, wrestled with a lifelong addiction to longevity.

Now, decades after Dr. Longo dropped his grunge-era band, DOT, for a career in biochemistry, the Italian professor stands with his floppy rocker hair and lab coat at the nexus of Italy’s eating and aging obsessions.

“For studying aging, Italy is just incredible,” said Dr. Longo, a youthful 56, at the lab he runs at a cancer institute in Milan, where he will speak at an aging conference later this month. Italy has one of the world’s oldest populations, including multiple pockets of centenarians who tantalize researchers searching for the fountain of youth. “It’s nirvana.”

Dr. Longo, who is also a professor of gerontology and director of the U.S.C. Longevity Institute in California, has long advocated longer and better living through eating Lite Italian, one of a global explosion of Road to Perpetual Wellville theories about how to stay young in a field that is itself still in its adolescence.

In addition to identifying genes that regulate aging, he has created a plant- and nut-based diet with supplements and kale crackers that mimics fasting to, he argues, allow cells to shed harmful baggage and rejuvenate, without the down side of actually starving. He has patented and sold his ProLon diet kits; published best-selling books (“The Longevity Diet”); and been called an influential “ Fasting Evangelist ” by Time magazine.

Last month, he published a new study based on clinical trials of hundreds of older people — including in the Calabria town from which his family hails — that he said suggests that periodic cycles of his own faux-fasting approach could reduce biological age and stave off illnesses associated with aging.

His private foundation, also based in Milan, tailors diets for cancer patients, but also consults for Italian companies and schools, promoting a Mediterranean diet that is actually foreign to most Italians today.

“Almost nobody in Italy eats the Mediterranean diet,” said Dr. Longo, who has a breezy California manner and Italian accent. He added that many Italian children, especially in the country’s south, are obese, bloated on what he calls the poisonous five Ps — pizza, pasta, protein, potatoes and pane (or bread).

At the foundation recently, the resident nutritionist, Dr. Romina Cervigni, sat amid pictures on the wall showing Dr. Longo playing guitar with centenarians, and shelves of his longevity diet books, translated into many languages and filled with recipes.

“It’s very similar to the original Mediterranean diet, not the present one,” she said, pointing at photographs on the wall of a bowl of ancient legumes similar to the chickpea, and of a Calabrian green bean pod prized by Dr. Longo. “His favorite.”

Dr. Longo, who has split his time between California and Italy for the past decade, once occupied a niche field. But in recent years, Silicon Valley billionaires who hope to be forever young have funded secretive labs. Wellness articles have conquered newspaper home pages and Fountains-of-Youth workout and diet ads featuring insanely fit middle-aged people teem on the social media feeds of not insanely fit middle-aged people.

But even as concepts like longevity, intermittent fasting and biological age — you’re only as old as your cells feel! — have gained momentum, governments like Italy’s are fretting over a creakier future in which booming populations of old people drain resources from the dwindling young.

And yet many scientists, nutritionists and longevity fanatics the world over continue to stare longingly toward Italy, seeking in its deep pockets of centenarians a secret ingredient to long life.

“ Probably they kept breeding between cousins and relatives ,” Dr. Longo offered, referring to the sometimes close relations in little Italian hill towns. “At some point, we suspect it sort of generated the super-longevity genome.”

The genetic drawbacks of incest, he hypothesized, slowly vanished because those mutations either killed their carriers before they could reproduce or because the town noticed a monstrous ailment — like early onset Alzheimer’s — in a particular family line and steered clear. “You’re in a little town, you’re probably going to get tagged.”

Dr. Longo wonders whether Italy’s centenarians had been protected from later disease by a starvation period and old-fashioned Mediterranean diet early in life, during rural Italy’s abject war-era poverty. Then a boost of proteins and fats and modern medicine after Italy’s postwar economic miracle protected them from frailty as they got older and kept them alive.

It could, he said, be a “historical coincidence that you’ll never see again.”

The mysteries of aging seized Dr. Longo at a young age.

He grew up in the northwestern port of Genoa but visited his grandparents back in Molochio, Calabria, a town known for its centenarians , every summer. When he was 5, he stood in a room as his grandfather, in his 70s, died.

“Probably something very much preventable,” Dr. Longo said.

At age 16, he moved to Chicago to live with relatives and couldn’t help notice that his middle-aged aunts and uncles fed on the “Chicago diet” of sausages and sugary drinks suffered diabetes and cardiovascular disease that their relatives back in Calabria did not.

“This was like the ’80s,” he said, “just like the nightmare diet.”

While in Chicago, he often went downtown to plug in his guitar at any blues club that would let him play. He enrolled in the renowned jazz guitar program at the University of North Texas.

“Even worse,” he said. “Tex-Mex.”

He ultimately ran afoul of the music program when he refused to direct the marching band, so he shifted his focus to his other passion.

“Aging,” he said, “it was in my head.”

He eventually earned his Ph.D in biochemistry at U.C.L.A. and did his postdoctoral training in the neurobiology of aging at U.S.C. He overcame early skepticism about the field to publish in top journals and became a zealous evangelizer for the age-reversing effects of his diet. About 10 years ago, eager to be closer to his aging parents in Genoa, he took a second job at the IFOM oncology institute in Milan.

He found a fount of inspiration in the pescatarian-heavy diet around Genoa and all the legumes down in Calabria.

“Genes and nutrition,” he said of Italy as an aging lab, “it’s just unbelievable.”

But he also found the modern Italian diet — the cured meats, layers of lasagna and fried vegetables the world hungered for — horrendous and a source of disease. And like other Italian aging researchers who are seeking the cause for aging in inflammation or hoping to zap senescent cells with targeted drugs, he said Italy’s lack of investment in research was a disgrace.

“Italy’s got such incredible history and a wealth of information about aging,” he said. “But spends virtually nothing.”

Back at his lab — where colleagues prepared the fasting-mimicking diet “broth mix” for mice — he passed a photograph on a shelf depicting a broken wall and reading, “We’re slowly falling apart.” He talked about how he and others had identified an important regulator of aging in yeast , and how he has investigated whether the same pathway was at work in all organisms. He said his research benefited from his past life of musical improvisation, because it opened his mind to unexpected possibilities, including using his diet to starve cells afflicted with cancer and other diseases.

Dr. Longo said he thinks of his mission as extending youth and health, not simply putting more years on the clock, a goal he said could lead to a “scary world,” in which only the rich could afford to live for centuries, potentially forcing caps on having children.

A more likely short-term scenario, he said, was division between two populations. The first would live as we do now and reach about 80 or longer through medical advancements. But Italians would be saddled with long — and, given the drop in the birthrate, potentially lonely — years burdened by horrible diseases. The other population would follow fasting diets and scientific breakthroughs and live to 100 and perhaps 110 in relative good health.

A practitioner of what he preaches, Dr. Longo envisioned himself in the latter category.

“I want to live to 120, 130. It really makes you paranoid now because everybody’s like, ‘Yeah, of course you got at least to get to 100,’” he said. “You don’t realize how hard it is to get to 100.”

In a recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers found people can reduce their risk for early death by nearly 20 percent by following diets focused on eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. Researchers followed 119 thousand men and women over 36 years. Those who improved their diet over time were associated with lowering their risk of dying from neurodegenerative diseases like dementia by seven percent, heart disease by up to 13 percent, and cancer by as much an 18 percent. So, what foods should you focus on for a longer life?

Doctor Seidman says, “There’s so much evidence that the more we eat that’s plant-based, that’s not processed, so fresh from garden to kitchen is the direction to lean in.”

So, eat more whole foods like fruits, veggies, and grains. And cook more yourself for a longer and healthier life.

By cooking more at home, you can control the ingredients in your food and reduce your risk for heart disease and early death. Seventy percent of the sodium that Americans eat come from overly processed foods or meals that are eaten out. A diet high in sodium is linked to high blood pressure and poor heart health.

BACKGROUND: A healthy diet throughout life helps prevent malnutrition in all its forms as well as a range of noncommunicable diseases and conditions. However, increased production of processed foods, rapid urbanization and changing lifestyles have led to a shift in dietary patterns. People are now consuming more foods high in energy, fats, free sugars, and salt/sodium. Also, many people do not eat enough fruit, vegetables, and other dietary fiber such as whole grains. The exact make-up of a diversified, balanced, and healthy diet will vary depending on individual characteristics such as age, gender, lifestyle, and degree of physical activity; cultural context; and locally available foods. Eating at least 400 g, or five portions, of fruit and vegetables per day reduces the risk of NCDs and helps to ensure an adequate daily intake of dietary fiber.

The study reveals the promising potential of strategic meal timing to promote anti-aging effects. Preliminary studies have found that time-restricted feeding can improve cardiometabolic health in rodents and humans, while caloric restriction has been associated with elongated lifespan. A team at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas conducted a study on mice controlling both their caloric intake and the timing of their meals. The subjects were split into six groups to determine whether meal timing had an independent effect on lifespan. One group served as the control cohort, while the remaining five consumed meals on varying feeding schedules. Results showed mice on the calorie-restricted diet that only ate during the day or the inactive phase of their circadian cycle and spent the remaining 12 hours fasting overnight had a median lifespan of 959 days, nearly 20% longer than the controls. Researchers are discussing the possible development of drugs that could target circadian genes to mimic the anti-aging effects of calorie-restricted, strategically-timed dietary patterns.

Creambell Ice Cream, brand of Devyani Food Industries, part of the $ 1.4 billion RJ Corp. has planned to invest Rs 150 crore as part of its foray in to Tamil Nadu market, a top official said today. The company, which holds 15 per cent market share in the Rs 4,500 crore ice cream industry, would build strong presence in Tamil Nadu over next few years Creambell, CEO, Nitin Arora said. “We are happy to announce our entry in Tamil Nadu and we will be focusing over the next few years to build a strong presence here”, he said.

In the first phase, he said, the company would focus on establishing its brand in Chennai market through retail and vending push carts. “Creambell expects to invest upwards of Rs 150 crore over the coming years to enhance presence and popularise the brand in the State”, he said in a statement.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What types of flavors do they offer?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

First, let’s look at the reasons you may want to write an ice cream business plan. There are three main reasons for writing a business plan for an ice cream shop:

Simply for yourself.

Lay out the plan and financial projections in writing so the path is as clear as possible in your head. After all, as the saying goes “ if you fail to prepare then prepare to fail “. This business plan can then act as a benchmark for you to follow for your business. From it, you can then assess what is working and what is not.

This is usually either to a bank for a bank loan or potentially to investors for investment.

For a potential landlord.

If you are currently looking for a lease, it may be an idea to put together a business plan to show any potential landlords. Landlords need to be confident that a potential tenant is going to make the rent every month before they will lease space to them. An Executive Summary is essentially a short summary of your business plan. It should tell someone in one page or less everything they need to know about your ice cream business without having to read the rest of the business plan. The Executive Summary will be the first part people will read – it is more for other people than for you. If it doesn’t capture them then potential landlords, lenders, or investors may not even bother to read the rest of it.

You want the executive summary to deliver a real punch as to why the ice cream business you are going to open will be wildly successful.

Your Executive Summary needs to include details about you, the ice cream concept, the business location, and the products and services that will be offered.

Try to keep the executive summary to less than one page.

Mission Statement

As a general rule, the Mission Statement is the purpose and value of your ice cream business. You want to try to make this as clear and concise as possible. The Mission Statement is your “ elevator pitch ” –  you know you end up in an elevator with a very important investor and you have 30 seconds to sell your ice cream concept before they have to get out of the elevator.

For example, is your proposed ice cream shop

  • focused on children and located close to schools with a mission to bring smiles to as many kids’ faces as possible through delicious colorful ice cream? 
  • the first keto ice cream concept developed in your area aimed at the 20–40-year-old demographic with your mission being to deliver keto options to the masses?
  • focused on making plant-based vegan ice cream made from minimum ingredients but never compromising on flavor and taste. Your mission is simply to “make someone’s day better” from the way you make your ice cream, to your customer experience to how they feel hours later?
  • focused on launching a healthier ice cream product with the aim of showing customers that ice cream can taste great as well as make you feel great.
  • focused on creating artisanal and authentic Italian gelato made from high-end Italian ingredients and traditional Italian gelato recipes. Your mission is to show people what real Italian Gelato tastes like.

Projected Organizational Growth

The projected organizational growth breaks down the projected growth of the business. This is essentially your plan on how your business will grow its sales over a 5-year period. How will sales grow at your first ice cream shop? How are you going to increase sales? Do you plan on opening more ice cream stores or will you focus on turning the one location into the “it-spot”? These are all the types of things you will cover in the Projected Organization Growth section.

In this section, you should include the following:

  • Overview of the five-year plan
  • Growth year 1
  • Growth year 2
  • Growth year 3
  • Growth year 4
  • Growth year 5

Under each section, include a summary of any expansion plans, reinvestment plans, and if more team members are going to be taken on. Also, focus on how you plan on growing the business each year. Also, talk about what role you as the owner will take each year (it may be that in the first year or two you plan in being very hands-on with the intention of hiring a manager at year three for example).

You should also include any marketing strategies you have for years, as well as how many forms of expansion are going to be funded.

Company Structure

In the company structure section, you should provide an overview of yourself the owner (plus any business partners you have).

This is the section where you really get to talk about yourself. In this section, you will want to detail all your achievements, qualifications, and experience. Also, make sure to really highlight any business experience you have had to date.

Finally, include a bit about why you are so passionate about starting this ice cream business and how you will ensure it will be a success.

Staff structure

This section also includes a table detailing how many staff you plan on having in years 1-5. It should be broken down into managerial roles, part-time and full-time. It would also be a good idea to include estimated pay here (research if there are any minimum wage increases planned where you live) and what you expect payroll to be year-to-year.

Industry Outlook

As a general rule, the industry outlook section looks at the specific business sector you are entering. In the case of an ice cream shop, you will want to look at what the ice cream shop industry is like generally as well as in your local geographic market.

Include the size and predicted growth of the ice cream industry. Make sure to use very credible references for these figures and reference them in the works cited section at the end of the business plan. Include the size and predicated growth of your ice cream niche (if applicable and if you can find the figures).

For example, will you make healthier ice cream to take advantage of the continuing movement toward health-conscious eating? Or will you design your ice cream and your location completely around being as TikTok friendly as possible? Both examples of growth factors that are driving customers’ actions separate from ice cream.

Also, what is the current consumer sentiment index? Are consumers’ discretionary spend forecasted to grow? Even if it isn’t, is worth referencing those smaller spend luxuries, like ice cream, tend to fare quite well even during harder economic times.

A 5-year sales forecast is one of the most important parts of your business plan. This will be especially the case if you are presenting your business plan to potential, investors, landlords, or banks. Unfortunately, it is also the part that a lot of small business owners turn their heads away from. But, it doesn’t have to be that way.

A sales forecast can be one of the best ways of giving you a benchmark on how your business is doing financially. It also sets out specifically what you think your growing costs, expenses, and sales should be over a given period.

Sale Forecast Essential Figures

As a general rule, $1k a day in sales for a small ice cream shop is a good initial first-year sales to aim for. In terms of expenses, the following are the approximate percentages for each ice cream shop expense (before financing – if you plan on taking out a bank loan then include the repayments too).

A good net profit percentage to aim for is 10%-20%.

2-5 Year Predicted Sales

Once you have put together your first year predicted sales, you will have to then put together your 2-5 year predicted sales. For these years you will have to account for the following:

  • Annual sales growth for the store (a 5-10% annual growth is a pretty good figure to aim for).
  • Any expansion plans (e.g., any plans to open further stores).
  • Inflation for some of your expenses.
  • Any rent increases (commercial rent tends to go up by a small amount every year according to the terms of the lease).
  • Any wage increases for team members and any new hires.

Everything you need to know about writing an ice cream business plan. What have we learned in this post? Well, despite the fact that most business owners do not write a business plan, let alone update them regularly – writing a business plan is essential.

In my experience, you really need to write two sets of business plans. The first will be designed for people outside of the business – potential investors, lenders, landlords, etc. The second is just for you. Why have two separate plans? Well, whilst yes, there will be a lot of overlapping information in both – a business plan aimed just at you is meant to be a strategic document you look at weekly. It is meant to guide your business decisions. It is meant to show you what is working in your business and what isn’t.

For example, by comparing your forecasted accounts against your current accounts you immediately have a benchmark to see how your business is doing. Likewise, stuck on marketing, or are your planned marketing strategies even working? Having a business plan which details what you plan to do and what you are doing lets you immediately know what to double down on and what to stop marketing-wise.

Write a business plan you will use

I have written a lot of business plans. I have spent days writing some which are then only thrown into a drawer or saved on a computer to never see the light of day again. This is not the purpose of a business plan. It is meant to be your business’s playbook. A guide for your day-to-day decisions. It should be something you look at weekly. It should be something that helps you grow your ice cream business.

Whatever you write – even if it doesn’t have all of the above in it, make sure it is something that YOU can use in YOUR business.

Hindustan Unilever Ltd's (HUL) tryst with the ice cream industry began in the early 1990s. In 1993, it bought the brand Dollops from then Cadbury India. That was soon followed by the acquisition of Kwality Wall’s from the Lamba family. Apart from Wall’s, it also acquired brands like Yankee Doodle, Sub-Zero, and Gaylord. The last piece in the first chapter of the ice cream puzzle was when Milkfood was picked up from Jagatjit Industries in 1994. Not surprisingly, all these brands eventually made way for Wall’s.

The most recent development in the ice cream business relates to parent company Unilever announcing a strategic intent to separate its ice cream business globally. The segment, which brings in revenue of €8 billion, has well-known brands under its wing, like Magnum, Ben & Jerry’s, Wall’s, and Popsicle. In India, that business is much smaller at around  Rs 1,800 crore, or 3% of the company’s top line in FY23. Market leader Amul, which entered the market in 1996, rakes in over Rs 2,500 crore and has grown impressively.

But why is Unilever separating the business in the first place? “Through this [demerger], they [Unilever] intend to transform the company into a simpler, more focussed, and a higher-performing one. The ice cream business has a different model compared to the rest of Unilever’s business,” an HUL spokesperson said in a response to Business Today’s queries.

Moving to India, industry trackers say HUL’s ice cream business has gross margins of 35-40%. In mid-2018, it acquired Adityaa Milk ice cream and frozen dessert, a Karnataka-based mid-market brand, giving out a clear message on how important the business was. “As far as the India ice cream business is concerned, we are evaluating various options in light of this announcement. We will discuss this with the HUL board and Unilever management in the coming months,” said the spokesperson. A former HUL executive points out that the focus is clearly on high-margin categories like personal products. “Ice cream perhaps does not fit into the scheme of things and anything is possible from this point.” 

The possibility of Unilever exiting the business altogether and retaining the India piece cannot be ruled out. Besides, there is a lot of headroom for growth in India, with the landscape still dominated by the co-operatives and private players, most of whom have larger operations in their home markets.         @krishnagopalan
