University of Bonn thesis

This template can be used directly for PhD, master and bachelor theses in physics and astronomy. With small adjustments, it is also possible to write a habilitation thesis using this style.

The template is intended for the typesetting program LaTeX and can be downloaded as a tar archive or from the University of Bonn Bitbucket. It contains a README, thesis guide, style file and templates for various cover sheets. If you want to create a cover sheet without the rest, you need the corresponding file from the cover directory in addition to ubonn-thesis.sty.

Click on Bitbucket to browse the repositiory.

You can clone the template using the command:

As mentioned in the thesis guide I have written a Python wrapper for the LaTeX package TikZ-FeynHand. This is available from CERN GitLab or the University of Bonn Bitbucket:

The repository also contains a lot of example graphs.

Documentation can be found in the thesis guide .

Files to download

On the right you can find the thesis guide related files. The list contains the latest thesis guide tar file, README and thesis guide pdf as well.

PI members (and only these) can have their master's or doctoral thesis printed as an official publication of the institute. There is no obligation to do so. The whole thing has nothing at all to do with the one copy of the doctoral thesis that is to be handed in to the institute library as part of the doctoral procedure.

To do this, the following "Laufzettel" must be filled out.

Leitfaden Hausarbeit

Staying up to date

In science and academia, it’s important to keep abreast of the latest developments in your research field at all times. We give you several ways you can do this.

Many databases, including SciFindern and Web of Science, let you find the original references for an article as well as articles that cite a specific work. This enables you to research both retrospectively and prospectively for citations in a paper that you have found.

Many databases allow you to set up automatic notifications, although you will usually need to register beforehand.

These notifications will then tell you when selected authors have published something new, when there are new hits for your saved search queries or when selected publications are cited, for example.

Some databases, such as PubMed, also let you set up RSS feeds, which check specific online resources for changes and let you know straight away. In the case of PubMed, for example, these might be new hits for a specific search query.

You can use RSS feeds via dynamic bookmarks or feed readers, one of which is included in the Zotero reference management software, for instance.

Funding an Open Access dissertation

There are various ways to fund the publication of your doctoral thesis in open access. Here are some options:

  • Use university resources and take advantage of our publication funds! You can easily apply for our publication fund for articles . Doctoral theses published as monographs are also funded under certain criteria .
  • Apply for scholarships and grants! For example, there are funding programs and foundations that support Open Access.
  • Negotiate with the publisher! Some publishers offer open access options. Check your publishing contract and the option to publish for a second time .

Information & Best Practices

Exchange and visibility are especially important for PhD students. At the same time, open access publication during the writing process is still not very common, especially for monographs.

But there are options. A good example is the project "Open PhD Thesis" ("Offene Doktorarbeit"): For the first time, a dissertation was published directly and immediately during the writing process for everyone, freely accessible at any time, under a free license (CC-BY-SA).

Research and Study at the University of Excellence in Bonn

The best minds have been able to develop their potential at the University of Excellence in Bonn for over 200 years. Find out more about our strategy in the competition for excellence . Discover our Transdisciplinary Research Areas . Get to know our cross-sectional tasks to improve equal opportunities and sustainability within the scientific community. Welcome to Bonn - welcome to the world.

It may be possible to change the purchasing behavior of consumers noticeably using some simple strategies. At least this is what a study, carried out by the University of Bonn and the Technical University of Munich, indicates. The researchers investigated the effect of nudging on the sale of products produced with high animal welfare standards in a virtual supermarket. Nudges are gentle prods or pushes designed to promote certain behaviors – such as placing some products in more visible positions. In the experiment, the participants in the nudging group selected products produced with high animal welfare standards about twice as frequently as the control group. The extent to which these results can be transferred to real purchasing decisions is still unclear. The study has now been published in the journal “Appetite.”

In what ways do evaluation and reward systems influence the conduct and results of research studies? This is the question addressed by Dr. Oliver Braganza of the University of Bonn and University Hospital Bonn, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Utrecht, the University of Duisburg-Essen and colleagues from the University of Bonn. Titled “The cultural evolution of scientific practice—from simulation to experimentation,” the project is to receive around 1.8 million euros in funding from the Volkswagen Foundation over the next four years.

In what is an intriguing mix of past and future, an international team of researchers, including some from the University of Bonn, has stumbled upon a surprising window to the past in Kourou in French Guiana. In the clay underneath the new launch pad for the forthcoming Ariane 6 launch vehicle, the interdisciplinary team has uncovered a remarkable collection of fossils stretching back 130,000 years. Covering over 270 species in total, including bony fish, sharks and numerous plants, they reflect the kind of climatic conditions that calculations suggest are set to reoccur in the year 2100. The team’s findings have now been published in the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.”

The Carl Friedrich von Siemens Stiftung is to present the Heinz Gumin Prize for Mathematics to Don Zagier, who was a director of the Bonn-based Max Planck Institute for Mathematics until 2019 and has strong ties to the University of Bonn. The foundation is thus honoring his pioneering research into number theory and the theory of modular forms. The Gumin Prize is worth €50,000, making it the most generous award for mathematics in Germany.

Rabbi Soloveitchik wrote that all Jewish philosophy must come from Halakhah. Yet, in The Lonely Man of Faith his theories of loneliness and of the demand to dialectically live between the two worlds of technological pragmatism and covenantal religion emerge from biblical narrative, not, apparently, from halakhic sources. This article uncovers and examines the halakhic sources for The Lonely Man of Faith, as cited in the footnotes of that essay and as presented by the Rav in a lecture series from 1958-1959 that presents an early version of Lonely Man of Faith. In doing so it reveals surprising connections between the Rav's early neo-Kantian work and his later existential work, suggesting greater continuity in the Rav's work than generally believed.

In his view, the idea of Messiah is personified and, at the same time, deferred, as an allegory for ceaseless and ever-changing transformations, both individual and communitarian. Biblical personae endowed with a messianic impulse, such as Abraham, Esther, Mordecai, Tamar, and Ruth, are seen by Soloveitchik as eschatological and metahistorical figures, co-redeemers and co-creators with God, and models with whom human beings may identify. In this framework, particular attention will be paid to Soloveitchik's conception of midrashic hermeneutics, as an always open process of individual and collective self-knowledge and self-redemption; and to the dialectical opposition between "revealed world" and "hidden world" as the constitutive element of Soloveitchik's vision of the humanity-to-come.

Few commentators are willing to concede to a view of the late-Victorian novelist and poet Thomas Hardy as a profoundly Christian writer. Most often he is regarded as atheistic in principle, a view which tends to subdue those voices that would describe his religious allegiance in far less axiomatic terms. I suggest that Hardy's schooling in the interpretive activity of biblical exegesis absorbed from his early religious education resonates in his writings. In particular, my reading of The Mayor of Casterbridge argues for a text that applies 'covenantal hermeneutics', an interpretive activity essential to its inner workings, which functions to produce a novel that is Hebraic rather than Hellenic in character.

BASIS is the "Bonner Allgemeine Studierenden InformationsSystem". It contains the electronic course catalog (eVV), where you can find information about the location and time of the courses. If you log in with your Uni-ID, personalized information and functions can be accessed. These include: Addresses for correspondence with the university, certificates on the course of studies and enrollment certificates, an overview of the semester contribution account, grade overviews and the registration functions for courses and exams.

  • Registration for exams: Students need to register for the exams they want to take via Basis. To do this, they need their University ID and password – both of which they receive automatically (by postal mail) with your semester documents after enrollment and transfer of the social contribution. Registration deadlines are available on the pages of the examination office.
  • Transcript of Records: Students can view and print their current Transcript of Records from Basis both in German and in English
  • Creating a timetable: From the second semester onwards, you can create your own timetable in BASIS, taking into account the study plan. In BASIS you will find the course catalog with numerous details about the courses (e.g. course type, location, time, name of the teacher).

Course registration Bachelor

There is no class registration for the lectures of the BSc Economics (VWL/Wirtschaftswissenschaften). Students simply attend the lectures. Dates and times are available in the electronic course catalog .

Exceptions:

The course "Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten" is offered as a seminar. Several seminars are offerd every semester and the number of participants per seminar is limited. In order to get a place in the seminar, students need to register before the start of the lecture period. Registration is done via BASIS under the function "Course registration". Deadlines are available both on BASIS and on the website of the Examination Office. Free elective modules are offered by other faculties. In some cases, registration for these course is done before the start of the semester – as indicated in the information highlighted in green in the overview over the free electives.

Course registration Master

There is no registration for the lectures of the MSc in Economics. Students simply attend the lectures. Dates and times are available in the electronic course catalog .

The Research Modules are taught as seminars. They are offered every winter semester in the different fields of study; the number of participants is limited and therefore there is an allocation procedure for the places. Details can be found here 2 .

Online learning platform: eCampus

eCampus is the e-learning platform of the University of Bonn. Here you will find the online courses for your lectures with scripts, tests, exercises, chat forums, wikis and more.

Both the Main Library and the Departmental Library MNL provide computer workstations, individual and group study areas primarily for Bonn students.

For registration and book lending, you can find all information here: ULB Website

Examinations

Further important information on the examinations, examination regulations and important dates can be found on the pages of the Economics Examination Office. Registration for the individual examinations takes place via the electronic course catalog Basis

In each semester there are two exam phases, i.e. each exam is offered twice per semester and you can decide whether you want to take an exam in the first or in the second phase. Both exam phases are 2-3 weeks long and usually fall

  • In the winter semester: (1) end of January/beginning of February and (2) mid to end of March respectively
  • In the summer semester: (1) mid-July/early August or (2) mid-to-late September.

During this period, final module examinations are written or oral examinations are held. For term papers and the Bachelor thesis, the deadlines are agreed upon with the examiner.

In written examinations, students should demonstrate that they can identify problems from the material area of the respective module in a limited time and with limited aids using the methods commonly used in this area and find ways to solve them.

In term papers, students should prove that they can independently work on a limited topic in a subject area of the respective module using the methods common in this area and present it in writing in a way that meets the requirements of science. The text part of the term paper consists of at least 5 and at most 15 DIN A4 pages. The processing time for a term paper is at least four and at most six weeks from the issue of the topic. The registration of a term paper including the topic is always done in the semester of the corresponding course. The latest submission date for a term paper is determined and communicated by the examiner.

In essays, students should demonstrate that they can scientifically analyze a problem in a subject area of the associated module, raise questions, outline further related problems and lead them towards a solution. The text part of an essay comprises at least 1 and at most 10 DIN A4 pages. The processing time is at least 1 and at most 4 weeks. If several essays are to be written, the total number of pages of all essays together must not exceed 10 DIN A4 pages. The latest deadline for essays must be set and communicated by the examiner. It is in any case within the semester in which the topic is issued. The examination board announces the number of essays to be written at the beginning of the lecture period.

Presentations are oral presentations of at least 10 and at most 30 minutes in duration, through which the student documents the ability to comprehensibly present his or her own results developed using scientific methods and to explain them in the discussion. Presentations must be given no later than the end of the lecture period of the semester in which the course takes place. The date on which the presentation is to be given will be determined and communicated by the examiner.

In oral examinations, the student should demonstrate that he or she has a broad knowledge of the subject matter of the respective module, that he or she is able to recognize its interrelationships, that he or she is able to classify special questions in these interrelationships and that he or she is able to point out possible solutions.

The bachelor thesis is a written examination paper, which is supposed to show that the student is able to independently work on a problem from the field of the bachelor program "Economics" within a given period of time according to scientific methods, to find a solution and to present it appropriately. The bachelor thesis is complemented by a colloquium. In the colloquium, methodological skills are deepened, data material is obtained and prepared, if necessary and an exposé is prepared.

Students have the entire fourth semester to prepare and write the master's thesis. The goal of the master's thesis is to apply the acquired knowledge in an individual research project.

Prerequisites: In order to register for the master's thesis, students must have earned 30 credit points from the basic modules, passed an advanced module in the field of study in which they wish to write the master's thesis and passed a research module in any field of study.

Essay About University Of Bonn And Karl Marx

  • Philosophy Sociology

Marx and Weber: Conflicting Conflict Theories Essay title: Marx and Weber: Conflicting Conflict Theories Two names that are repeatedly mentioned in sociological theory are Karl Marx and Max Weber. In some ways these two intellectuals were similar in the way they looked at society. There are also some striking differences. In order to compare and contrast these two individuals it is necessary to look at each of their ideas. Then a comparison of their views can be illustrated followed by examples of how their perspectives differ from each other.

Karl Marx was born in Trier, Germany in 1818. He came from a middle-class German-Jewish background. He attended first the University of Bonn, and later the University of Berlin. At the University of Berlin he was linked to the Young Hegelians. The Young Hegelians was a group that criticized German politics using Hegelian philosophy as their guide. (Farganis 2004, 23) Hegel’s philosophy involved viewing “things as they are and as they have the potential to become in the future.” (Farganis 2004, 23) Throughout Marx’s works he looks at the relationships between wealth and power and the conflict that exists between the capitalist bourgeoisie who own the means of production and the proletariat that is the labor force behind production.

In Marx’s Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, he begins to draw the line between the capitalist owner and the laborer class. As a result of the competition that is necessary for capitalist interests, society divides itself into two classes:
