My Dream House- An Essay

I always imagine how my future house will be. A home is a place surrounded by the people one loves. A house is not made beautiful by its furniture or decor, but by the people that live inside it. My dream house should be a house that I can share with my family when I grow old. I always dream of a wooden house in the hilly areas. My dream house should be the one facing a small river. Through the windows, I could see the sun setting and disappearing into the mountains. My dream house would have a small garden where I will grow my own vegetables and fruits.

The house that I fancy would be considerably big with four rooms and a spacious common area. My dream house should be comfortable for my parents, grandparents and siblings. The house should be equipped with all the modern amenities. It should have a big TV with a home theatre system and a Playstation attached to it. The walls of the house will have light colours that will make it appear bright. There will be sufficient light bulbs and lamps in every room. I also dream of a chandelier in the guest room and a big sofa where everyone will sit and enjoy watching TV together. My grandparents love reading. I wish that my dream house will have a reading space with lots of books.

I have a 3-year old pet dog called Tiger. I also want to have a small yet cosy space in my house for Tiger where he can sleep and relax when he grows old. The house will have beautiful interiors and will have all the facilities like a modern kitchen, three bathrooms, a staircase leading to the terrace, ACs, etc. My dream home should be the one where we all can live happily and comfortably.

Essays About Dream Houses

In this essay, describe your dream house. What is your dream house like? Is it a mansion with several rooms always ready to accommodate parties? Is it a simple bungalow in the countryside surrounded by flowers? Or is it a glass house by the lake? First, describe your dream house’s size, design, and features. Then, choose the best location for it. Finally, explain how this dream house perfectly fits your lifestyle preference or what inspired your dream house.

Find out about the most popular dream house styles and describe them. For example, contemporary houses are often defined by minimalist designs. Victorian-styled houses, meanwhile, boast aesthetic details. If you have also noticed common denominators among today’s dream houses, such as a natural color finish to the walls and deep kitchen hues, add them.

As tackled in one of our essay examples, the housing crisis is leaving behind the younger generations to live the dream of having their dream house. So, find out the actual situation by interviewing a few young professionals. Learn about their challenges in building or buying their dream home. Is this dream still part of their life goals, or have they given up entirely?

Working toward your dream home is truly a commitment – financially and psychologically. Unfortunately, several drawbacks can get in the way, such as unexpected circumstances where you must withdraw your savings. So, in this essay, provide practical tips on how one can work toward their dream house, such as setting a realistic budget and finding the correct location. Then, help your readers assess when it is the right time to take a mortgage.

Foreclosed houses attract buyers because of their affordability. So those on a tight budget consider this an excellent option to acquire their dream house. However, foreclosed houses have their share of horror stories, either because of actual ghosts or whooping costs needed for repairs. For your essay, dive into the top pitfalls in buying foreclosed homes. Then, walk your readers through the limited financing arrangements available to them, given that many lenders avoid financing the purchase of foreclosed homes.

Doing topic research before writing an essay is very important. To write a dream house essay in English, you must first visualize the entire house in your mind. Then it would help if you decided what details and how many details you want to include in your dream house essay. These will include the words or phrases that you want to include.

Planning before writing not only saves time but helps you in organizing your ideas. You will have to spend some time in developing a basic outline of your essay. It will help you in improving the flow of your writing and will help the reader in visualizing your dream house.

As discussed before, having a writing plan proves to help bring your thoughts on a piece of paper. An outline of my dream house essay will be like a blueprint that will serve as a guide when you sit down to write the actual essay.

An example of the essay outline that describes your house can be:

  • Introduction
  • Body Paragraph 1: Details about the exterior of the house
  • Body Paragraph 2: Details about the interior of the house

You should feel free to include as many details or points as you wish or deem appropriate. With that said, make sure the flow is logical and the essay segues smoothly from the introduction to the body and then to the concluding part.

Your dream house essay should engage the readers. It can be only achieved when the body paragraphs are cohesive, linked, and are in a flow. It is unnecessary to make two separate paragraphs to communicate similar ideas; hence, they should be grouped together. Topic sentences should be used along with content to support it. All the paragraphs should have a similar length. The use of transition words (such as ‘furthermore’, ‘however’, and ‘besides’) will improve the connection and flow between paragraphs. Do not use intricate sentence structure that is difficult to read and understand. Simple sentences are easier to understand and will help in visualizing the house. The dream house essay example written at the end will provide you with a better idea of how paragraphs are written.

Your essay should include all of the details regarding the house. It would be best if you start by putting a “my dream house paragraph” at the start, which will give the reader a basic idea or introduction. It can be followed by a paragraph of what living in a dream house would be like for you. Then you can continue by explaining the exterior, interior, and particular areas or features of the house which make the house a “dream house” for you. You can mention the tiniest details as it helps the reader in visualizing better. You can also imagine yourself living in that house and then jot down different activities that you might be carrying out, such as hosting parties and having movie nights.

The conclusion of the essay will give a summary of all the points you have mentioned in your essay “the house of my dream”. It will wrap up your essay in a neat manner. When concluding your essay, please do not restate the idea or the statement that you want to have a dream house as it will be redundant. The conclusion is not supposed to bring any new ideas as they should only be explained in the body paragraphs.

Once you are done writing the essay, its time to sit back and revise it carefully. The revision process lets you look at the essay from a fresh perspective. You can be critical while reading it. It is the rethinking phase in which you reconsider the details, add something in case anything was missed, and reorganize the paragraphs. If you have missed details about the exciting floor tiling, while describing your dream house, now is the time to add those.

The golden rule of writing is not relying on the first draft of an essay about a dream house or of any essay. If you are not considering this, then you are risking more than just having confused readers. What if you have made spelling mistakes or errors in the sentence structure. It might derail the reader and can hinder the visualization process of your dream house. Proofreading can help you maintain quality and can help you in recognizing areas that could have been written and explained better.

To help with the visualization process, pictures that resemble your dream house can be added. It will also ensure the attentiveness of the reader as images are better at grabbing attention. Also, the human brain can process images much faster than words. Check out the example in the dream house college assignment written below.

essay about my dream house

Since childhood, I have been dreaming of the perfect house that will be a place of happiness, inspiration, and peace. The idea of having a house in a noisy city is something I have always dreaded. My dream house will be in the suburbs, outside the city. I would be very excited is there is a lake nearby as I adore nature. Though the house will be far from the city, that does not mean that I will live in isolation. Everything will be a walking distance, whether it is a supermarket or a car wash.

The house of my dreams will have a simple but modern design that would be appealing to the eyes. I would like to have a huge lawn where I can grow my vegetables and fruits. The parking would be spacious enough for several cars. I will place modern furniture on the front porch, where we can relax and enjoy the view. The backyard will have enough space to hold a party and entertain at least fifty people. I have a huge family, and we are always hosting parties. I also want a pool in the backyard so that I can host pool parties.

The house will have plenty of large glass windows that will make the house bright and spacious. I will plan each detail of the interior of my house. I want it to be very modern and minimalistic. Bulky furniture, dark wallpapers, and bohemian décor is something that I do not want in my house.

Unnecessary furniture clutters the house and makes me claustrophobic. The hall and large living room should have enough space so that people can move around quickly. I want to have comfortable sofas and soft furry carpet on the floor. The kitchen should be large and neat, as I am fond of cooking and baking. It will be equipped with all the latest appliances to make the whole baking process more comfortable. I would love to cook for my family on weekends. We can all sit on the large wooden dining table and enjoy the scrumptious meal.

The bedrooms will have attached bathrooms. I want a rain shower and a bathtub in every bathroom in my house. The bedrooms will have king-size, cozy beds with linen sheets. Just like the house, I want the color of the beddings to be light. Unlike most of the houses, I would like to have a small home theatre in my bedroom. I am not a bookworm so I might turn the room that was meant to be a library in a proper movie theatre so that I can host movie nights.

My dream house will be warm and welcoming. I want it to be my happy place, away from all the hustle and bustle. It will fulfill my desire of living near nature. It would be a perfect place for me to relax after a tough day at work. I wish that one day I can build this house and live in it.

IELTS comprises several different sections, one of which is the speaking test. Every individual appearing for IELTS must undertake the activities under this section and answer the questions asked adequately.

In the present scenario, the topic we would like to discuss is ' Describe Your Deam House ’.  So, your answer must touch down on the following aspects:

  • Where is your dream house located?
  • What would it look like?
  • When would you like to live in your dream house?
  • Why is this house perfect for you?

Table of Contents

Describe your dream house in detail: question 1, download e-books for ielts preparation, what will your dream house look like: question 2, important ielts exam resources.

The idea of having a dream house someday fills me with excitement. It will be one place that will be solely mine– a place I can rest, unwind and call my own.

When I think of where this dream house would be situated, I can only envision the cold and peaceful mountains. I have been to hills and mountains during many treks. It's one place that offers me the most joy. The happiness of walking on the side of the curvy, narrow roads and stopping at a small food stall to have a hot cup of tea and noodles makes me feel alive. Life feels simpler there.

My dream house would ideally be small. I don't have the desire to live in a gigantic mansion with all the worldly and materialistic amenities. Although it would be small, it would have hundreds of plants– both inside and outside. My kitchen will be my happy place, where I will always keep everything stocked. The balcony will have a little hammock where I could read a book and get lost in the fictional world.

I would love to have this dream house as soon as possible, maybe in the next year or two. It's only about attaining financial stability and a job I love, and then I can move to my house in the mountains!

The day I move would perhaps be the happiest day of my life. This house will be perfect for me because I have thought of every aspect of it, in incredible detail, over and over. It'll be a house made of love and tranquillity, with a house cat running around to give me company!

In conclusion, my dream house, a harmonious blend of comfort, aesthetic appeal, and functionality, represents more than just a physical structure; it's a sanctuary that echoes my personality, values, and aspirations. Envisioned as a place of tranquility, inspiration, and warmth, it serves as a haven where memories are made and cherished. From its eco-friendly design to the cozy, inviting spaces, each element of this house contributes to an atmosphere of peace and happiness. In describing my dream house for this IELTS Cue Card, I not only share a personal vision but also articulate a future aspiration, showcasing my ability to communicate complex ideas and emotions effectively in English. This dream house symbolizes the culmination of my goals and efforts, a place where I can thrive, grow, and find solace.

Describe Your Dream House: IELTS Cue Card

Ever since I was young, I always thought that growing up would be so exciting. For one, it would involve having a house of my own, my dream house. A place that is just mine, where I can host the people I love and always be authentically myself.

My dream house will be a beach house. So, every morning, I would first pull the curtains away from the life-size windows and watch the waves hitting the shore. I imagine the noise of crashing waves to be rhythmic and peaceful. Moreover, the idea of sitting on the porch while the salty winds rush through the tangles of my hair sounds beautiful to me.

The house would ideally be big enough for me, my parents and my friends if they ever want to stay. I want to be the person whose house is always open for loved ones to stay over. It would have an all-blue theme to match the seaside atmosphere. I also envision a lot of artwork hanging on the walls of my house.

I think no other place would come close to being perfect for me than this one. I am a water baby, and I love the feel of sand under my feet. Moreover, I will personalize this space to match my taste and comfort. I will also add a library room.

If it were up to me, I would want to buy my dream house today. That said, it's not financially possible, so I will strive to work hard and gain stability in my life to have it one day.

Descriptive essay topics, tips for writing descriptively, descriptive essay example, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about descriptive essays.

When you are assigned a descriptive essay, you’ll normally be given a specific prompt or choice of prompts. They will often ask you to describe something from your own experience.

  • Describe a place you love to spend time in.
  • Describe an object that has sentimental value for you.

You might also be asked to describe something outside your own experience, in which case you’ll have to use your imagination.

  • Describe the experience of a soldier in the trenches of World War I.
  • Describe what it might be like to live on another planet.

Sometimes you’ll be asked to describe something more abstract, like an emotion.

If you’re not given a specific prompt, try to think of something you feel confident describing in detail. Think of objects and places you know well, that provoke specific feelings or sensations, and that you can describe in an interesting way.

Here's why students love Scribbr's proofreading services

Discover proofreading & editing

The key to writing an effective descriptive essay is to find ways of bringing your subject to life for the reader. You’re not limited to providing a literal description as you would be in more formal essay types.

Make use of figurative language, sensory details, and strong word choices to create a memorable description.

Use figurative language

Figurative language consists of devices like metaphor and simile that use words in non-literal ways to create a memorable effect. This is essential in a descriptive essay; it’s what gives your writing its creative edge and makes your description unique.

Take the following description of a park.

This tells us something about the place, but it’s a bit too literal and not likely to be memorable.

If we want to make the description more likely to stick in the reader’s mind, we can use some figurative language.

Here we have used a simile to compare the park to a face and the trees to facial hair. This is memorable because it’s not what the reader expects; it makes them look at the park from a different angle.

You don’t have to fill every sentence with figurative language, but using these devices in an original way at various points throughout your essay will keep the reader engaged and convey your unique perspective on your subject.

Use your senses

Another key aspect of descriptive writing is the use of sensory details. This means referring not only to what something looks like, but also to smell, sound, touch, and taste.

Obviously not all senses will apply to every subject, but it’s always a good idea to explore what’s interesting about your subject beyond just what it looks like.

Even when your subject is more abstract, you might find a way to incorporate the senses more metaphorically, as in this descriptive essay about fear.

Choose the right words

Writing descriptively involves choosing your words carefully. The use of effective adjectives is important, but so is your choice of adverbs , verbs , and even nouns.

It’s easy to end up using clichéd phrases—“cold as ice,” “free as a bird”—but try to reflect further and make more precise, original word choices. Clichés provide conventional ways of describing things, but they don’t tell the reader anything about your unique perspective on what you’re describing.

Try looking over your sentences to find places where a different word would convey your impression more precisely or vividly. Using a thesaurus can help you find alternative word choices.

  • My cat runs across the garden quickly and jumps onto the fence to watch it from above.
  • My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above.

However, exercise care in your choices; don’t just look for the most impressive-looking synonym you can find for every word. Overuse of a thesaurus can result in ridiculous sentences like this one:

  • My feline perambulates the allotment proficiently and capers atop the palisade to regard it from aloft.

An example of a short descriptive essay, written in response to the prompt “Describe a place you love to spend time in,” is shown below.

Hover over different parts of the text to see how a descriptive essay works.

On Sunday afternoons I like to spend my time in the garden behind my house. The garden is narrow but long, a corridor of green extending from the back of the house, and I sit on a lawn chair at the far end to read and relax. I am in my small peaceful paradise: the shade of the tree, the feel of the grass on my feet, the gentle activity of the fish in the pond beside me.

My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above. From his perch he can watch over his little kingdom and keep an eye on the neighbours. He does this until the barking of next door’s dog scares him from his post and he bolts for the cat flap to govern from the safety of the kitchen.

With that, I am left alone with the fish, whose whole world is the pond by my feet. The fish explore the pond every day as if for the first time, prodding and inspecting every stone. I sometimes feel the same about sitting here in the garden; I know the place better than anyone, but whenever I return I still feel compelled to pay attention to all its details and novelties—a new bird perched in the tree, the growth of the grass, and the movement of the insects it shelters…

Sitting out in the garden, I feel serene. I feel at home. And yet I always feel there is more to discover. The bounds of my garden may be small, but there is a whole world contained within it, and it is one I will never get tired of inhabiting.

how to write a descriptive essay about your dream house

The key difference is that a narrative essay is designed to tell a complete story, while a descriptive essay is meant to convey an intense description of a particular place, object, or concept.

Narrative and descriptive essays both allow you to write more personally and creatively than other kinds of essays , and similar writing skills can apply to both.

If you’re not given a specific prompt for your descriptive essay , think about places and objects you know well, that you can think of interesting ways to describe, or that have strong personal significance for you.

The best kind of object for a descriptive essay is one specific enough that you can describe its particular features in detail—don’t choose something too vague or general.

Think about the houses you like, choose the one you dream to live in, and try to convey your relevant ideas on a few pages.

Before you start drafting an essay on this topic, learn the specifics of descriptive writing and effective tactics to succeed. First, determine the main purpose of writing it. Provide each person reading your essay with a clear and vivid image of your dream house in detail, such as:

  • Its location;
  • When it was built;
  • The number of rooms, including a living room, bedroom or bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom)
  • Its color scheme (green, brown, white, or other colors);
  • Its size (small or big);
  • Whether it has a beautiful garden with different plants and flowers);
  • Where to leave cars;
  • The material of the walls;
  • The overall feel and look.

Make your dream house appear in front of other people. Use effective ways to make them imagine what you’re writing about.

Open your assignment and read all instructions carefully before you choose a topic for your future paper. Pick a specific matter that you’ll cover in it. Your descriptive essay should have a focus. This means that you need to pick narrow topics, such as the design of your dream house, the place you want it to be, how it looks downstairs, etc. Choose the aspect that is easy to describe.

Writing my dream house essay can be fun because you can consider different elements, like the bed, door, and floor types, chairs, and so on. With so many interesting ideas, try to think outside the box or choose an original angle to share exceptional descriptions. A good topic makes the entire process easier. Look at https://www.slideshare.net/soniaimfernandes/my-dream-house-7986519 to get a better idea of basic details to mention in your paper.

Take into account the aspects that will make your essay engaging for the audience. Your interests can give brilliant ideas. Use the following suggestions for your inspiration:

  • Your perfect house on wheels;
  • Living in the country;
  • Multi-car garage;
  • Expensive and affordable features;
  • Outdoor or indoor swimming pool;
  • Giving your family the home they’ve always imagined;
  • If your dream home isn’t a house;
  • Modern design;
  • Building a dream house for someone you love.

An effective outline can help you focus on important elements to share and define the information relevant to your key idea. It breaks up your essay into different sections . Use a good plan to develop concepts for every part. It helps you structure and organize all the details as you take notes of interesting things that you’ll discuss in your paper. Your outline ensures that you write it according to guidelines.

There are certain steps that you should take to end up with high marks for a dream house essay:

  • Make a table with five columns (write a few sentences in each one to reflect all senses).
  • Fill it up with the best words that describe the dream house perfectly (avoid complex phrases or boring words).
  • Make an effective structure . It will give a proper sense to your topic (order your essay from general to specific to structure relevant information correctly).
  • Write a coherent and clear introduction or opening paragraph that serves as the establishment of major points and key ideas.
  • Write strong topic sentences. Include each one in a separate paragraph to let readers know what they will read about in every part of your paper.
  • Write body paragraphs. Each one should match a specific topic sentence. The main purpose of writing them is to prove that your arguments or ideas have a proper sense and you’re right about a particular issue.
  • Share some interesting details. Look at the table filled up with details about all senses to provoke important associations in the audience to let them better understand your idea.
  • Write a logical and coherent conclusion. It should summarize everything discussed on other sections, provoke readers to further discussions, restate your thesis, or include a call to action. Make it as strong as possible.

After taking all the above-mentioned steps , it’s necessary to proofread and edit your final draft to make sure that it’s free from grammar errors, typos, and other mistakes. Take some break before doing that. You’ll return with a fresh look. It’s also advisable to ask other people to proofread your paper because they can easily find the mistakes that you missed.

10 lines on ‘my dream house’ in english, short essay on ‘my dream house’, long paragraph on ‘my dream house’ for kids, what your child will learn from this essay.

A house is the most important place in one’s life. It is the place where one can rest, have fun, and feel safe, too. Everyone has an idea of their dream house, including children. In fact, we think children have really cool ideas about their dream home! If you have a child, encourage them to write an essay about it, and you’ll be amazed at how creatively they express themselves. Writing on the topic will keep your child engaged and also expand their imagination. Hand them a pen and paper, and if possible, write with them and share each other’s ideas about your dream house. For the kids who need a kickstart, here are some tips they can remember before they pen down an impressive essay on ‘My Dream House’.

There are some important points your child needs to remember while writing an essay on their dream house. Here’s a step-by-step guide you can use to help your child describe their dream house:

  • In the first step, let your child’s imagination take over and ideate on what they want to write on the topic.
  • Let them then pen down the ideas on paper. This will form an outline, and it will help them cover all the points while writing the paragraph.
  • In the next step, guide your child to form easy-to-read short and simple sentences from the outline.
  • Motivate your child to elaborate on each idea instead of describing one particular idea.
  • Help your child to write with the flow. This will help them enjoy writing the essay.
  • Your child can mention how they want their dream house to be, the importance of a home, how the family bonds in the house, etc.

One’s dream house plays an important role in their life. These lines will help your child to write a simple 10-line essay on ‘My Dream House’ for class 1 and class 2.

  • My dream house is big.
  • There will be open space in the front and at the back.
  • It will have a big lawn and a backyard.
  • There will be a garden full of flowers in the front.
  • Organic vegetables will grow in the backyard.
  • The house will have big rooms.
  • The windows will be very big.
  • There will be lots of sunshine and air.
  • There will be a small pool.
  • The whole family will enjoy living in the house.

This short paragraph on the topic would help your little one elaborate on their ideas and write the essay with a flow:

My dream house will be a white coloured house with peach borders. It will have a lot of open space all around it. There will be plenty of plants in and around the house. The lawn in front of the house will have bright blooming flowers, like roses, sunflowers, jasmines, dahlias, lilies, and lavender. The house will also have a fence and tall trees all along the fence. I wish to have neem trees, mango trees, dates, Gulmohar trees, cotton trees, masquerade trees, and coconut trees. My dream house will be surrounded by greenery. I will live in the house with my parents, grandparents, brother, and my cutest little furry friend, Lucky.

And, how can we forget a long paragraph? Here’s an example your child can use when writing their own essay:

My dream house is a beautiful white house with peach borders. There’s a lot of open space around the house. It will have a lawn and garden in the front. There will be a big backyard, too. The garden will be filled with bright, fragrant flowers, especially clusters of pink, white, yellow, peach, and red roses. There will be sunflowers, lilies, marigolds, dahlias, jasmines, and many other flowers. I will also grow healthy and nutritious organic vegetables and fruits in the backyard. We can have those fruits and veggies every day.

There will also be a tiny pool behind the house. We will have lots of fun in the pool throughout the summer. Tall trees will stand along the whole length of the fence. There will be mango trees, neem trees, Gulmohar, dates, cotton trees, coconut trees, and masquerade trees. It will be nice to see the sun setting behind the trees. In the mornings, I will wake up to the chirping of the birds nesting in those trees. The house will also have big balconies with plenty of plants in brightly painted ceramic pots.

I will live in the house with my parents, grandparents, brother, and my sweetest little furry friend, Lucky. We will spend a lot of time bonding with each other in this house. The house will have big rooms with lots of sunshine and air. The walls will have beautiful paintings. Some of my drawings will also be framed and put on the walls. I will decorate the house with strings of lights that will sparkle and shine. There will be colourful curtains that will sway with the cool breeze. There will be small cosy mattresses in each room for Lucky. She can enjoy being in any room she wants.

The house will also have a bathtub where I will play with squeeze toys, splashing water. There will be a pinboard next to my study table where I will put up positive thoughts. We will also have a small library that will stock many books. On the lawn, we will play throw and fetch balls. Lucky enjoys it when she fetches the ball for us. We will also play badminton. I love to play these two games. There will be a tea table under an umbrella with a few chairs on the lawn. We will have a nice time sipping juice while the elders take tea or coffee. At night, we will lie down and count stars in the sky. The whole family will have the best time in this house!

For your child, writing this essay will help them expand their imagination and enhance their vocabulary and creative skills. Your little one will also enjoy the creative freedom they get while penning down their thoughts, no matter how offbeat they are.

We hope the above blog will help your child write a beautiful essay on the topic. A house symbolises togetherness, love, bonding, and positivity. When your child expresses their thoughts and feelings about their dream house, they will not only improve their written communication skills but also train their subconscious mind to bring their dream house to life someday!

Let's get started!

On This Page On This Page -->

What is a Descriptive Essay?

A descriptive essay is a type of essay that asks the students to describe something, such as a person, place, incident, emotion, or event. It is a detailed description where the writer is painting a picture in words.

Different people have different thoughts and points of view. A descriptive essay allows you to explain your point of view in your own way. You should give a description of every aspect of the topic so that a reader can feel as if he has personally experienced that.

Two Classic Approaches to the Descriptive Essay

There are two main ways to write a descriptive essay: the personal essay and the formal description. Let’s discuss them in detail.

  • Personal Essay

The best way to describe an experience using your feelings and responses would be through a personal essay. This work can awaken empathy in readers, but it's important not to make any mistakes or organize poorly.

Formal Description

Descriptive writing is a great way to show your readers what you're talking about. It resembles an argumentative essay because it has one main goal: communicating key points or describing something in detail.

Features of Descriptive Essay

There are five basic features of a descriptive essay that distinguishes it from other writing types.  Let's discuss them in detail.

  • Sensory Details - A great descriptive essay appeals to the audience's emotions and forms an association for them. In this essay type, a writer paints a picture with words so they have to be really engaging and appealing to the senses.
  • Central Theme - The content of your descriptive essay is shaped according to the central or major theme. Make sure to define the central theme explicitly and focus it on one single point.
  • Figurative Language - A key to writing an impactful descriptive essay is to use figurative language throughout the content. Use metaphors, similes, adverbs, and adjectives to describe settings and characters.
  • Precise Language - The vocabulary you use for the content should be appropriate and accurate. The language, as well as the tone, should reflect the major theme of the essay vividly.
  • Organization of Ideas - Arrange all your ideas and information in a properly structured manner.  Make sure that your descriptive writing is based on these elements to ensure its effectiveness and success.

Descriptive Essay Format

All formal writing types, including descriptive papers, require a proper format to be readable and understandable.

Therefore, before starting your essay, you should create an outline of your essay. It will help you organize your essay.

Below is the format of the descriptive essay outline.

Descriptive Essay Outline Template

How to Start a Descriptive Essay?

Writing a strong descriptive essay requires a writer to form a strong plan. Following are the steps involved in the pre-writing or planning procedure of a good descriptive essay:

1. Topic Selection

Usually, professors assign the topic for a descriptive essay. But, if you have a choice to select a topic, then you have a great chance to select something which you know a lot about.

Have a look at some popular descriptive essay topics.

Descriptive Essay Topics On Writing About A Person

  • Describe your favorite person
  • Describe your best friend
  • Describe your favorite family member
  • Describe your enemy
  • Describe someone whom you love the most
  • Describe your mother
  • Describe your father
  • Describe your family
  • Describe your favorite brother
  • Describe a person whom you idealize

Descriptive Essay Topics About an Event

  • Describe your friend’s wedding
  • Describe your college farewell
  • Describe the last Christmas party
  • Describe your brother’s bachelor party
  • Describe your own wedding
  • Describe the memorable concert you have attended
  • Describe your last convocation
  • Describe the best dinner party you have ever attended
  • Describe the event you have attended where you were not invited
  • Describe your last day at the office

Descriptive Essay Topics About a Place

  • Describe your favorite place
  • Describe the place you have visited in the summer
  • Describe your grandmama’s farmhouse
  • Describe your hometown
  • Describe your favorite college
  • Describe your favorite vacation destination
  • Describe your favorite tourist spot
  • Describe your favorite museum
  • Describe your dream house
  • Describe a fancy place that you have created

2. Brainstorming

The next step is brainstorming about the selected topic. At this point, think of all the relevant points that exactly describe your topic.

3. Thesis Statement for Descriptive Essay

After the brainstorming session, develop a strong thesis statement . It is a very crucial part of the whole essay because it will be a prominent part of the essay.

How to Write a Descriptive Essay?

When you have drafted a plan for your essay, it is time to execute it effectively. The writing process of your essay will only get simpler if you have taken all the required pre-writing steps.

Follow the below-mentioned steps to finally begin your writing procedure for the descriptive essay:

1. Introduction

An introduction serves as the gateway to your essay, drawing readers into the realm of your ideas. It's the stage where you set the tone and establish the central theme.

Unlike an analytical essay , which dives deep into dissecting and interpreting information, a descriptive essay paints a vivid picture, immersing readers in sensory experiences and intricate details.

In the descriptive essay introduction, we aim to pique curiosity, perhaps by posing a thought-provoking question or igniting a spark of intrigue that beckons readers to journey further into the narrative woven within these pages.

The body part gives you the freedom to write the details about your selected topic. Here you have 3 to 4 paragraphs where you can paint a picture in the reader’s mind through vivid language, persuading dialogues, or images.

This part should support your thesis. Describe all the points in detail. The idea should come out at the beginning.

The paragraphs should be interlinked with good transition words . Organize your paragraphs in a way that makes sense.

3. Conclusion

It is the last chance to impress the reader. So, you need to pay all attention to this section. Restate your thesis statement and give a short reminder to the reader what the essay was required to cover. Make a good final statement so that the reader can leave thinking about your essay.

4. Proofreading

Proofread your essay to do a review. You can identify the mistakes and correct your tone.  Go through your essay 2 or 3 times so that you can identify all the mistakes and correct them before final submission.

The location of the dream house

Describe the specifications of the dream house

Describe the reason for the dream house

Describe your Dream House: Sample Answer 1

The idea of having a dream house brings joy and happiness. The dream will be solely for me to chill, rest and rejuvenate.

I would love to have my dream house around mountains and water streams. I would want to have a small house with basic amenities. The house will be around a lot of greenery.

My dream home will not be very modern, and I would design it to reflect the old architectural style. I prefer to have a large space on the balcony to sit and enjoy nature. The house will have 2 rooms. 1 room will be solely dedicated to making a library.

Nowadays, my whole week is very hectic, which sometimes gets hectic and stressful. I prefer to stay at the dream house during my holidays and weekends and relish the environment.

The day my dream house is built will be the happiest day of my life. It will be a house made out of love and a house where cats will run around.

Describe your Dream House: Sample Answer 2

When you work hard, the first priority that comes to your mind is a house. Similarly, even I envision having a dream house for my family.

I have spent all my life in a small house on the narrow roads of Banaras. Since I shifted to Mumbai for job opportunities, I have always dreamt of having a house in Mumbai.

I imagine my dream house to be a 4-bedroom house with all the modern amenities. The area of the apartment should preferably be in a posh area. The accessibility of all the requirements should be easy.

I would shift to my dream house when I have stability in financial requirements and settled in a job. This house can change my lifestyle forever.

Getting a house in Mumbai will fulfil one of my bucket list wishes. The dream house will change my lifestyle and bring my family more happiness, prosperity and growth.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Discussion

After completing the speaking part 2 test, the examiner might ask follow-up questions related to the cue card topic in speaking part 3 or the discussion round.

We have curated some follow-up questions with answers for your better understanding.

Q. What do Indians prefer apartments or houses?

Answer. According to me, it depends on the region people are living in. If it is a metropolitan city, people prefer apartments because land is scarce. Whereas in the small region, people prefer to live in houses.

Q. How is modern home design in your country different to that of the past?

Answer. The modern home design is very different from the past in my country. The materials used now in making houses are much more advanced, such as weatherproof paints, insulated walls, soundproof windows, etc. The design of the modern houses is according to the space available. There is a better utilisation of space in modern home designs. In the past, homes were more spacious and not equipped to handle the latest electronic gadgets and equipment, like washing machines, microwaves, dishwashers & so on.

Q. What type of home do most people live in in your country?

Answer. India is a vast and diverse country. People live in different types of houses, depending on the area and the climate. For instance, houses made from bamboo in eastern India are very common. In regions where there is snowfall, sloped houses are common.

Q. Do young people in your country like to live with their parents or by themselves?

Answer. In my country, young people prefer to live with their parents. When they have to move to another city or country for higher education or better career prospects, it’s part of the Indian culture for children to live with their parents.

The IELTS speaking test is of a relatively more minor duration than other IELTS test parts. However, the weightage of the score band is equally divided among all the test sections: writing, reading, listening and speaking.

how to write a descriptive essay about your dream house

IELTS CUE CARD TOPIC

Describe Your Idea of a Perfect Home or Dream House where You Want to Live

You should say:

Where this place would be? What it would look like? When you would like to live there? Explain why it is ideal to you?

NOTE  –  The examiner gives you one minute to plan your answer ,  and to help you prepare for the topic, the examiner provides you with a pencil and a notepad. You’ll have to answer the questions given on the topic for one-to-two minutes .

Introduction

Like everyone, I also have a clear idea of what my dream house would be like.

Where would this place be?

It would be far away from the city in the countryside area.

What would it look like?

It would look like a stately house will state of the art infrastructure. The house would have modern facilities like a gym and a swimming pool, but it would also be close to nature because I will build it in the middle of a farmhouse. The electricity generation will happen through solar panels, and a library will be inside to pamper my appetite for reading books.

Moreover, the house’s outside walls will have pictures of revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad and sports stars like Sachin Tendulkar and M S Dhoni.

When would you like to live there?

I am a student, and constructing such a house requires a boatload of money. Therefore, I have given myself six years. After finishing my studies, I will work with determination, dedication, and discipline to arrange funds for my startup. And once my venture becomes successful, I will have sufficient money to construct my dream home .

Explain why it is ideal for you.

It is ideal for me because, since childhood, I have dreamed of living an opulent lifestyle in the countryside instead of a city. However, I am an urban dweller, and traffic congestion and air pollution are pressing problems for me. By shifting to the countryside, I will maintain good physical health by avoiding pollution because, in villages, you get clean and pristine air.

Here are some examples of follow-up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to the cue card “ Describe Your Idea of a Perfect Home or Dream House where You Want to Live ”.

1. Are there many types of houses in your country? What are they?

My nation has different types of houses, including flats, villas, duplexes, and mansions. As my county accommodates people from all walks of life, housing choice thrives primarily on a person’s financial status and requirements.

2. Are any traditional houses still famous in your country? Can you describe them?

In the hills, houses built in the conventional style of slopping roofs are still favoured to take care of excessive rain and snowfall.

Paragraph about my dream house

My dream is to live in a big house surrounded by a big garden full of flowers and trees. My house should be located outside the city, on the outskirts of town where I can find true peace and happiness. Therefore, my dream house should have the characteristics that represent who I am with its location as well as its interior and exterior design. From my point of view, the location of my house is very important and the surroundings and the design should be carefully considered.

I've always been fascinated by the sounds of the outdoors. I'd feel very lively every morning if I was woken up by the sound of doves perching on the branches of the trees in my yard. In this respect, I imagine my house

near a flowing river, built in the countryside. It would be located in such a place that I could find fresh water and air. Also, I'd like to be near to the center of a big city so that I will be able to go sopping when I needed to.

As a matter of fact, peace and harmony combined with nature would be the basic feature of the location of my dream house. The exterior of my home would have a long concreted circled driveway. I would have a lot of flower beds around my home with flowers of vibrant colors. I also would love to have a patio that wrapped around the front and the back of my 4500 square foot home. The exterior walls of my home would be magnificent bright colors of blues, oranges, yellows and greens with a fe

Mexican textiles outlining all window and door framing.

Also in the backyard I would love to have a in ground swimming pool, Jacuzzi, ball court, and a family gym. In my swimming pool a small bar built in the pool would be great, especially for the summer months. The interior of my home would consist of eight bedrooms, ten bathrooms, one living room, two dining, areas, one kitchen, one library, one playroom, and one office. My bedrooms would be adorned with rustic furniture, vibrant colors for the bedding with matching curtains and rugs. In each bedroom there would also be a huge spacious walk in closet.

All ten bathrooms would be furnished with Mexican art work on the walls and the counter tops around my tub, sink, and shower will be adorned with Mexican tiles. I also would like to have a humungous closet in each bathroom for storage, and a lot of cabinet space. My living room would be almost the biggest room in my home to accommodate a large family. It would need to have a lot of sitting area, a huge flat screen TV on the wall, a fireplace, and a theater style surround sound. In the two dining areas they would need to consist of tables and seating for around twenty people.

Kitchen area would be the biggest part of my dream home. I would like all appliances in my kitchen to metal and all matching. In the center of my kitchen would be an island that was spacious and one of my stoves would be placed at the end of the island. I would have barstools around part of the island so my

children could sit there and eat their breakfast every morning. I would need an enormous amount of cabinet and storage in my kitchen as well, so that I would have enough storage area for thing i would need in my kitchen. It would be stocked with all sorts of need cooking tools.

Family room

My family room, library, and play room will be where my books, games, Nintendo’s, will be stored. My office would need to be spacious, as i do not like to feel suffocated in small areas. I would have all new office furniture and equipment that would accommodate my working from home. All in All, I do not realistacally see myself having such a spacious and gorgeous home, but i still will strive for this so that maybe one day i will be able to afford my dream home. I enjoy visualizing about this extradinary home. I will always continue to have dreams and hopes.

My dream house is simple yet it is a house where I think I can live happily and comfortably with my family. I choose it to be made out of wood so that it would be environment-friendly and to be appropriate with the location near the lake. This concludes my dream house.
