How to Create a Built-In Cover Page in Microsoft Word

You can quickly create a cover page using a built-in design.

  • Select the Insert tab in the ribbon.

  • Choose a built-in design from the gallery in the drop-down menu. (Hover over More Cover Pages from Office.com for additional options.)

  • (Optional) To insert your cover page somewhere other than the top of your document, right-click the built-in design, and then choose a location from the shortcut menu.

You can create a custom cover page that can be reused in other Word documents.

  • Open a blank document. ( Pro Tip: Press Ctrl + N to open a blank document.)
  • Create your cover page, including images if necessary.
  • Select all the text and images that should be included in the cover page.

  • Select the Insert tab in the ribbon (see figure 1).
  • Select Cover Page in the Pages group (see figure 2).
  • Select Save Selection to Cover Page Gallery from the drop-down menu.

  • Type a unique name into the Name text box in the Create New Building Block dialog box. (Cover pages are part of Word’s building block system of reusable content.)

  • (Optional) Add additional information into the Description text box, if necessary.

Important Note: I strongly recommend leaving the default settings for the other options in this dialog box.

  • Select the OK button.

Your custom cover page should now be added to the Cover Page Gallery.

  • Close the document used to create your custom cover page. (You don’t have to save this document.)
  • Select Save in the alert box asking if you want to save changes to Building Blocks.dotx.

  • Open the document to which you want to add the custom cover page.
  • Select the Insert tab (see figure 1).
  • Select your custom cover page from the gallery.

Your custom cover page should now be added to your current document.

  • Right-click the custom cover page in the Cover Page drop-down menu, and then select Organize and Delete from the shortcut menu.

A great cover page draws in readers. If you use Microsoft Word, you're in luck, because Word has ready to use cover pages. But did you know that Word also lets you create custom cover pages? Here's how to use both.

Word includes some cover page templates you can insert and then customize a bit if you need a quick cover page for your document.

To find them, switch over to the "Insert" tab on Word's Ribbon and then click the "Cover Page" button. (If your window isn't maximized, you might see a "Pages" button instead. Click that to show the "Cover Page" button.)

On the drop-down menu, click the cover page you want to use.

You can now add your document title, subtitle, date, and other information, as well as change the design up a bit if you want.

Creating a cover page from a template is easy enough, but if you don't like any of the built-in designs, you can create your own. You can do this on an existing document, but it's easiest to start with a blank document. We're going to be saving the custom cover page so that you can quickly insert it into an existing document anyway.

You can create your cover page using pretty much any of Word's tools. You can add a background color, picture, or texture . You can also position those elements how you want and even apply Word's text wrapping tools to them.  Make it look however you want.

When it comes to content, you have a couple of options. You can just type the text you want, but that wouldn't make it much of a template unless you want the same text on the cover page every time you use it.

Instead, you can use Word's Quick Parts feature to add document properties to the document. To do that, switch over to the "Insert" tab and then click the "Quick Parts" button.

On the drop-down menu, point to the "Document Property" submenu, and you'll see a bunch of different properties you can insert into your document: author, title, company, publish date, and so on. Go ahead and insert whichever properties you want to appear on your title page.

When you're done, you'll have several fields on your page. When you insert your cover page into a document later on, those fields are populated with the actual properties from the document (and you can also edit them on the fly if you want).

They're super plain to start with, but you can treat them like any other text in Word by applying styles and formatting, centering them on the page---whatever. Here, we've centered them on the page, applied the Title style to the title, shifted things down on the page a bit, and inserted a filigree illustration for a little flair. It's not the prettiest cover page around, but it's a good working example.

Now that we've got our cover page the way we want it, it's time to create a cover page template out of it.

First, select everything in the document (that's why we recommend starting this in a blank document) by pressing Ctrl+A. Next, head back to the "Insert" tab and then click that "Cover Page" button again.

This time, choose the "Save Selection to Cover Page Gallery" command from the drop-down menu.

In the window that opens, give your cover page a name and fill out a brief description if you want. Click "OK" when you're done.

Now when you open the "Cover Page" drop-down menu in the future, you'll see your new cover page template in the "General" section. Click to insert it just like you would one of Word's built-in cover pages.

“On one hand, it’s telling people who are unhoused to register using the registrar’s office’s address, and on the other hand, later in the bill, it’s saying, ‘If you do that, that is evidence to sustain a voter challenge,’” said Isaacson of the ACLU.

Upon the bill's passage in the legislature, the ACLU of Georgia threatened to sue if Kemp signs it into law. “I think it’s inconsistent at best and sets people who are unhoused up to have their voter eligibility challenged at worst,” Isaacson said.

Amateur activists, who often question the results of the 2020 election, have been using public data to raise issues about people registered at now-defunct homeless shelters or who use business addresses on their voter registrations. Fulton County resident Jason Frazier, who has submitted thousands of voter challenges, told a Trump ally in 2023 about how he found people registered at UPS Stores.

Raffensperger supports voter challenge definitions

The bill says there is probable cause to remove someone from the voter rolls if, for example, they are dead, registered to vote somewhere else, received a tax credit for living in another place, or registered at a nonresidential address.

Hassinger of the secretary of state's office said these definitions impose boundaries on citizen advocates who have been submitting voter challenges to county election officials and “making cases in their own ways.”

But Isaacson said the language doesn’t put a time limit on when someone was registered to vote somewhere else, so someone who voted in another state before moving to Georgia could be challenged for being registered in another state. "If you have voted in a different jurisdiction at any time in the past, does that establish probable use to sustain a voting challenge?” she asked.

Isaacson said the probable cause provisions “dramatically lower the standard” to kick people off the voter rolls. The National Voter Registration Act outlines specific processes for removing people from the rolls, which includes sending postcards to people to verify if their address has changed and waiting two presidential election cycles, or eight years, before removing them completely. She argues Georgia's law violates the National Voter Registration Act.

Republicans contend that the bill will actually reduce disenfranchisement by making clear when evidence is insufficient to sustain a challenge to a voter's registration. Hassinger pointed to a provision in the bill that specifically says the US Post Office’s National Change of Address database is not enough to remove someone from the voter rolls.

Previously, he said, “some people would come in with an [National Change of Address] spreadsheet or something they’d purchased from a commercial database," and local election officials didn't know whether that warranted removing the voter being challenged.

Hassinger said the bill "has to be considered by the governor’s office in its totality. This particular part of codifying the process of voter challenges, we’re OK with."

But critics pointed to a part of the bill that says proof of registration at a nonresidential address can be confirmed from “a government office, database, website, or publicly available sources derived solely from such governmental sources.”

Third party candidates, paper ballots, and QR codes

Another part of the bill allows candidates to get on the presidential ballot if they appear on the ballot in at least 20 other states. It would go into effect in July. Third-party candidates running in 2024, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., a scion of the storied Democratic family who is outspoken against vaccines, Cornel West, a left-wing scholar and civil rights activist, and Jill Stein, the perpetual candidate of the progressive Green Party.

Trump tends to perform better in polls that include third party candidates. A recent Quinnipiac poll showed President Joe Biden winning by three points in a head-to-head matchup with Trump, but losing by one point when third-party candidates were included.

Other parts of Georgia's bill would eliminate the use of QR codes to count printed ballots, require counties to count absentee votes faster on Election Day, and allow small counties to use paper ballots for elections. Those would go into effect after the election.

“Public trust in our elections should be of utmost concern for every elected official in Georgia,” State Sen. Max Burns, a Republican, said in a statement . “Removing QR codes from printed ballots is a powerful step forward to increase that trust and secure our state’s elections.”

State Rep. Saira Draper, a Democrat, told the Atlanta Journal Constitution : “There’s a very vocal minority out there who will never be confident in the process so long as their candidate is not the winner. I wish we had a policy of not passing laws to placate conspiracy theorists.”

From 'practical impossibility' to done deal: How Trump posted the $175 million bond in his civil fraud case

Lawyers for former President Donald Trump were in discussions to pull off what they'd described as a "practical impossibility" when a New York appeals court reduced the size of the bond they had to post because of a judgment in his civil fraud case by almost $400 million.

Don Hankey , the billionaire chairman of Knight Insurance Group, told NBC News he was negotiating to post a far heftier bond of $557 million with the Trump Organization when the state Appellate Division lowered the required bond to $175 million.

A bond for that amount was posted Monday night , underwritten by Hankey's Knight Specialty Insurance Co. Hankey said the bond was fully collateralized by cash from Trump's company. "It was a good experience," Hankey said.

The posting of the bond prevents New York Attorney General Letitia James from collecting on the $464 million judgment against Trump and his co-defendants in a civil fraud case while the appeals process plays out.

Judge Arthur Engoron handed down the massive judgment — an award of over  $350 million that ballooned to $464 million with pre-judgment interest — after he found Trump, his company and top executives had committed “persistent” fraud over several years.

Trump immediately appealed the award, arguing that it was filled with errors and that the judge had double- and triple-counted some of the damages. In New York, if people or companies want to pause judgments while they appeal, they typically have to post security for the full awards, and then some.

Because state law requires a 9% annual interest rate on judgments while a party appeals, courts in New York generally require a security of 120% of the award. For Trump and his co-defendants, that would total $557 million, their lawyers said in court filings.

Trump's attorneys pleaded with the appeals court to reduce the amount they had to post, to $100 million. They argued that having to post the full amount was "impossible" and that it would require Trump and his company to start selling off assets because they didn't have that much cash on hand.

A single appeals court judge rejected that request in late February but gave Trump an expedited briefing schedule to make his case to a full panel of judges ahead of the time frame when James would begin collecting on the judgment.

Trump's lawyers then elaborated on the struggles to come up with the necessary funds.

“Defendants’ ongoing diligent efforts have proven that a bond in the judgment’s full amount is ‘a practical impossibility,’” they said in a March 18 filing. “These diligent efforts have included approaching about 30 surety companies through 4 separate brokers.”

They went on to say their efforts had proved that “obtaining an appeal bond in the full amount” of the judgment “is not possible under the circumstances presented.” That was in large part because most of the bond companies would not “accept hard assets such as real estate as collateral” but “will only accept cash or cash equivalents (such as marketable securities),” their filing said.

Experts told NBC News that Trump needed the appeals court to hit pause because if James started seizing assets, the results could have been disastrous for his company, potentially leading to bankruptcy.

Attorneys for Trump asked the appeals court to spare the defendants from posting any security at all while the appeal process plays out, contending that Trump's "real estate holdings — including iconic properties like 40 Wall Street, Doral Miami, and Mar-a-Lago, — greatly exceed the amount of the judgment" and could be used to satisfy the award if they lost their appeal.

Soon after, Hankey — who told Forbes he has supported Trump's political campaigns in the past — got involved. He told NBC News he'd been following Trump's troubles getting a bond in the news and "let it be known to an acquaintance of mine" with ties to Trump that the huge bond was something he could "consider."

He said he was on his second day of negotiations with a lawyer from the Trump Organization when the Appellate Division reduced the bond amount to $175 million and gave Trump 10 days to come up with it. That deadline was set to expire Thursday.

"When the bond was reduced, we thought they could cover the damages themselves and didn’t think we’d hear back from them again, but they called us back" a couple of days later, Hankey said. The talks went quickly, with the company saying it would collateralize the full amount using a combination of cash and bonds. The money it eventually did put up appeared to be all cash, Hankey added.

"We've done bonds in the past, but this is a large size for us — and everyone," he said, adding that his involvement had nothing to do with politics.

"This is what we do," he said. "I'd be happy to do this for a Republican or a Democrat."
