Teaching style.

My teaching style is similar to the management style I employed as an editor. I prefer to be a coach rather than a top-down administrator. I urge my students to not accept mediocrity and instead strive for excellence in all they do. My goal is to make them better writers and better people with a sense of ethics and responsibility to themselves and society. I preach that good writing comes from hard work and research and a mastery of the English language, which I also encourage them to strive for.

Experience Summary

After several years as a journalist, writer and editor, I had the opportunity in 2001 to teach writing courses at Orange Coast College. Because teaching had always been of interest to me, I took the offer and have enjoyed it ever since. Teaching seems to fit me well. My students tell me all the time how I'm the best teacher they've ever had, and my student evaluations support that. It is so fulfilling to me to see my students go on and succeed in life, sometimes changing courses and pursuing a career in writing because of me. I don't teach so much for the money but for the enjoyment I receive in educating young minds. Other experiences include being an English literacy tutor at the Huntington Beach library, teaching ESL learners how to read in English to their American born children. Another very fulfilling role.

I try to cultivate a student's curiosity, and then provide the necessary tools for learning. If students are curious and driven to learn, their potential is limitless. My goal is to help students learn through discovery. I am patient, considerate, and respectful of each student.

While studying for my BA in English (Emphasis in Literature), I worked for two years as a writing tutor at the Hagan Writing Center. Tutoring was offered as a free service for interested students. (For some students, it was required). I tutored students at all levels from pre-College Writing to senior level literature courses. I completed work for my degree at three different colleges and universities in the United States and England, and I feel that the different teaching and learning methods I have seen have prepared me to be a more effective English tutor.

I love one-on-one tutoring because of the complete attention I can pay to the tutee’s specific needs and his or her learning style. My personality is encouraging, positive and patient, and that has served me well in building relationships with repeat tutees at the Writing Center over the past two years. To me, the primary role of a tutor is to explore ideas about the subject in a way that there is not time for in the classroom and also to ask tutees the questions they would not think to ask themselves about their ideas. I can help tutees explore the potential of their ideas and how to own the skills they already possess. My role is also to help the tutee expand his or her knowledge base and tools for future writing through examples, research and discussion.

As a tutor at the University of Arizona Writing Center, I worked with undergraduate, graduate and international students on all aspects of the writing process. This encompassed higher and lower order concerns including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, formatting, thesis and topic sentence work, grammar and ESL concerns, research methods, and content. My tutees came from all majors including English, History, Business, and the sciences. I worked on everything from rhetorical analyses to technical writing for business to personal statements and research papers. I also spent two semesters in an online tutoring program for high school students to submit drafts of their college admissions essays for commentary. They could then make revisions and resubmit additional drafts for further critiquing. Additionally, as a Magna Cum Laude History graduate with a Political Science minor, I focused on American History and government and developed a passion for those topics I love to impart on others.

Melissa Rose M

I want to teach students about themselves, others, and the world around them through literature and learning experiences. All information is presented in ways that all students can relate and understand core concepts to be successful in the classroom and in life. The most important achievement in my teaching career is for my students to evaluate information, discover topics they are passionate about, and realize they have a voice and can make a difference by becoming life long learners.

Education is my life. From a very young age, I loved school and learning. It all started with my brother and his learning disability. I tutored him all throughout his academic career. In college I tutored elementary students through the CARE program. I then decided to be an English Education major and have been teaching ever since. Currently, I am finishing my graduate work at East Carolina University and working on the addition of TESL on to my teaching license. As a lifelong learner, I understand the importance of education and on researching the best methods of teaching to all students.

I believe that the possibilities of learning are incredible, especially with understanding the tools of both teaching and learning whether that is textbooks, computers, or something else. It is important to ascertain how a student learns, and adjust to them. I’ve discovered in my teaching of children that it is critical to create a foundation of understanding then build upon it through repetition of the basic ideals while adding to what is already established. Children are amazingly open to new ideas, and take on new challenges with excitement, so it is my job as instructor to guide them in their journey. I also feel that early learning is fundamental to the way individuals learn later in life, so helping children learn how to overcome obstacles becomes a way of expanding their educational possibilities.

Throughout my higher educational career, I’ve been driven to learn as much as possible to help satisfy my enormous curiosity. I have earned a bachelor degree in English Literature, and am currently a MFA candidate in the creative writing program at Arizona State University. As part of my graduate funding, I work as a teaching assistant. The program requires constant training, and I enjoy taking part in understanding the way students learn. In addition to teaching at the university, I work with the Office of Youth Preparation—teaching not only the craft of poetry, but helping 4th and 5th graders develop language skills necessary to do well in school. Although I primarily work with the study of English, I study Spanish and have become proficient with the use of the language.

Katherine K

Throughout my teaching experience I have encountered students of all ages and abilities, from high school students with learning differences to adult learners of ESL. I believe each student is unique and brings their own set of experiences and strengths to the material to be learned, necessitating an adaptable teaching style. I am experienced in the communicative approach and believe each students learns best through discovery and by utilizing their particular intelligence. I am patient, relaxed and treat each student with respect. I think students learn best when they are having fun and have a trusting relationship with their teacher.

While working towards my bachelors degree in English (with a minor in Political Science), I worked as a substitute teacher in the public school system for a year and a half, in order to ascertain my affinity for many different levels and subjects. My writing and grammatical skills are excellent; in 2004 I was awarded First Place in Undergraduate Writing at the University of North Florida. My first professional teaching experience complemented my areas of expertise perfectly: I taught English as a Foreign Language to business professionals in Argentina for six months, using the communicative approach. During this time I learned much about South American politics and culture, as well as the Spanish language. Upon return I taught English to high school students for one year at a private school for students with learning disabilities and emotional/ behavioral problems. This summer, I have again taught international students at a Berlitz ESL program, ELS Language Center. Throughout the years I have also tutored and worked with students one on one many times, specifically with rudimentary reading and writing.

I believe each student has a unique way of learning, and that my job is to discover and support that learning style. Every writer has his or her own voice, and I work to empower writers to express their thoughts as clearly and powerfully as possible. My goal is not to impose information but to guide students in discovery, to support critical thinking and foster new perspectives. Writing is an intensely personal and creative act; I believe in providing a framework within which writing students can comfortably and confidently learn the strategies to speak easily on the page.

I've spent most of my life helping people learn, starting as a peer tutor in high school! I began teaching professionally as a teaching assistant in college, and since then I've taught in a wide variety of settings, including government training programs, workplace and vocational education, university, high school and community college classes, and private language schools. As a published writer, I mentor and coach writing students in fiction, nonfiction and college composition, and I've designed and developed many classes and programs to support writing students of all levels. I was a tutor for three years at the International School of Languages in Beverly Hills, working with foreign students to improve their command of English. With a BA and MA in Russian studies and a minor in English and journalism, as well as certification in adult literacy, GED and basic education and a community college credential, I have a wide range of experience in language education and writing competency.

I prefer to focus on a child's strengths, even while teaching a subject that may be considered the child's weakest. I believe finding and integrating strengths promotes learning because it creates positive attitudes and a more productive learning environment. While understanding certain systems or theories is necessary, I think it is sometimes easier for a child to grasp challenging material when they see plenty of examples of the theory at work.

As a recent graduate, with seven years experience writing in a professional environment, I excel at writing and editing because I understand the system of language, and I pay close attention to detail. I have nearly five years experience working with children in a structured environment, in addition to working with children of various ages as a summer camp counselor. I also hold a certificate with significant training in teaching English to non-native speakers.

A Word From Previous Students and Parents

Claudia, h..

Pam has been working with Emmi for a few weeks, she is great, I would be happy to recommend her to others.

I just wanted to tell you how great Danny’s tutor is. He loves her and is responding extremely well to her teaching. He told his mother it only seems like he’s with her 10 minutes! That surely tells it all. He’s reading at home and his mom notice... d that he reads faster and this is only after a few lessons. I can’t imagine how improved he’ll be by the end of summer!

Sharon is doing great... Best so far. Thanks.

Writing Tutoring in Las Vegas, NV

UniversityTutor can provide you with a database that you can use to discover private writing tutors in Las Vegas, Nevada, who are prepared to meet your needs and help you reach for your educational goals. Writing is one of the subjects that students begin learning from their first day of school, and content in this field builds upon itself in each subsequent grade level. You might be the parent of an elementary school student who is attempting to learn beginner penmanship, or you could be a student enrolled in courses at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas who's looking to improve your skills at composing term papers. Whatever particular situation you or your student are in, a private instructor has the ability to cover the necessary material in a way that can use your existing abilities to improve your standing in the subject of writing. Continue reading to find out the answers to a few of the questions we commonly receive.

What is a private writing tutor?

Oftentimes, the first instinct of a student who is looking for extra assistance is to look to their classroom instructor. This can prove to be a smart move if you need an answer to a simple question about something like the composition of business documents like memos and resumes. If your or your student's needs are broader, however, the teacher may not be able to provide sufficient time or attention. Independent writing tutors in Las Vegas can act as valuable supplements to the experience you have in the classroom.

Maybe you are having trouble learning how to create a bibliography and properly cite sources using the correct style conventions. A private tutor can drill you on the necessary components until it becomes second nature to you. Conversely, if your young student establishes proficiency with basic punctuation more quickly and easily than their classmates, an academic mentor can shift their focus to other areas that need more improvement. This type of personalized guidance is usually hard to come by in a traditional classroom environment.

How can private writing tutoring help boost my studies?

Perhaps the greatest benefit to private tutoring is the opportunity for you or your student to take part in instruction that has been customized to your preferences and needs. If you happen to learn best in a visual way, your writing coach can present complex sentence structure using charts or other aids so the material makes sense to you. Perhaps your student is more of an auditory learner. Their tutor can take time to lead detailed discussions of topics like editing and proofreading in order to make study time as effective as possible.

The academic development of you or your student is the only focus of the lessons that a tutor conducts. This means you can determine the pace at which you work while also receiving regular feedback on your progress. Studying in a one-on-one setting helps you establish a rapport with your instructor that allows you to feel confident expressing concerns with things like the spelling of commonly used foreign words.

Broad academic skills can also be developed by working with a private writing tutor. They can help you or your student to better organize the notes you take so information is easier to find when you need it. While helping you improve your creative essay composition, they can also teach you time-management strategies that you can carry throughout the rest of your education to improve the efficiency of your study time.

What is the easiest way to find a high-quality writing tutor near me?

Seeking out a qualified private instructor can be done on your own, but it can also be a time-consuming and daunting task that doesn't fit easily into your schedule. Allow UniversityTutor to make the search process easier. We offer one convenient location to comb through a database of potential instructors until you find one that meets your needs. You are sure to find someone who is a good fit, whether you are looking for an experienced classroom instructor to assist your student or a peer who can relate well to your own academic situation.

Finding someone who can meet when and where it is convenient is also crucial. You may want to eliminate commute time by selecting a tutor who can come to your home to help your student improve their grasp of the basic parts of speech. Or perhaps you would rather meet your private instructor at the public library so they can help you analyze the language techniques used by famous authors. These choices are up to you. Some writing mentors are even available to hold study sessions online in order to optimize flexibility and convenience.

What is the cost of private writing tutoring?

The price that you end up paying for dedicated, private instruction varies. Factors such as the specific content you need to cover as well as your tutor's familiarity and comfort level with that content can impact the rate that they charge you for services. There is also the opportunity to receive a group rate by taking part in study sessions alongside friends or classmates that you have invited.

The best way to begin receiving detailed pricing information is to sign up with us so you can connect with tutors who will provide actual quotes for the assistance you are looking for. No hidden fees will ever be added on by UniversityTutor simply for using our services to find private instructors.

Why should I connect with a qualified writing tutor near me?

A formal classroom learning experience is key to developing a strong baseline of knowledge, but writing tutors in Las Vegas have the unique ability to help you fill in any gaps by attacking your areas of need with personalized instruction. Whether you are attending West Career & Technical Academy and need to improve your ability to write reflective essays or a student in your life could use assistance nailing down the capitalization rules for proper names, a private instructor can provide valuable support and guidance. Begin searching today for academic mentors who can meet your needs by signing up for an account on UniversityTutor.

Author Interviews

Don winslow ends trilogy, and his writing career, with final novel 'city in ruins'.

SSimon

Scott Simon

NPR's Scott Simon talks to best-selling suspense author Don Winslow about what he says is his final novel, "City in Ruins."

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

Danny Ryan, who's been a Rhode Island mobster, dockworker and fugitive from the law, is now a pillar of the community in Las Vegas. He's got a palatial home to which good citizens come to pay homage and enjoy his hospitality, his young son he loves and the companionship - well, three times a week, anyway - of an accomplished and compelling woman he respects. What could possibly go wrong? "City In Ruins" is the third and final novel in the bestselling Danny Ryan trilogy by Don Winslow. It follows "City On Fire" and "City Of Dreams," and Don Winslow says quite explicitly, "City Of Ruins" is my final book - no loopholes I could detect. He joins us now from Julian, Calif. Thanks so much for being with us.

DON WINSLOW: Thanks for having me. I appreciate it.

SIMON: The book opens with an implosion, a famous old Las Vegas hotel, now owned by Danny Ryan, being brought down from the inside. Is implosion a kind of theme for Danny Ryan's life, too?

WINSLOW: Yeah, it sure is. Looking over the arc of these three books, I think we're looking at a certain kind of self-destruction with dynamite, if you will, or explosives that were laid many years earlier on a long fuse, to torture the metaphor, and so implosion's definitely a theme.

SIMON: In earlier books, Danny had used what I'll just refer to as ill-gotten gains from a criminal enterprise to buy his way into a respectable hotel and gaming enterprise. He's got a dream. In fact, a hotel - I guess it's called the Dream in Italian.

WINSLOW: It is. Yeah, Il Sogno.

SIMON: Tell us about this place he wants to bring into being.

WINSLOW: Well, he wants to bring into being a new kind of megahotel where people walk in and it's literally a dream with images shifting constantly on the walls of beauty and action and all kinds of things. And I think it's reflective of his own dream of trying to create a new kind of life for himself and for his son.

SIMON: What stands in the way?

WINSLOW: Well, a number of things. For one thing, this valuable piece of real estate that this old hotel sat on is critical to power on the Las Vegas Strip. And he basically undermines a rival in order to acquire it. And then it turns out that both Danny and this rival have mob ties from the past that each of them is trying to escape and trying to leave behind him, and neither one of them can. And so those things really get in the way of Danny's dream.

SIMON: You've written so many other books over the years, including "Savages," "The Force," "The Cartel," bestsellers made into screen properties. What's kept you coming back to Danny Ryan?

WINSLOW: You know, it took me almost 30 years to complete this trilogy. You know, it's funny. You look back on your life. When I started the Danny Ryan books, my now-adult and married son was a toddler. What I was - set out to do was to write a fully contemporary crime epic that took its stories and characters, however, from the Greek and Roman classics, principally the Aeneid, but also the Odyssey and the Iliad and certain Greek tragic dramas. I kept failing at it. I would write some of the book, and some of it worked, and a lot of it didn't. And so at times, I was discouraged, thinking that either, A, it was a bad idea, or, B, it was a good idea and I didn't have the chops to carry it out. But I kept coming back to it 'cause I couldn't leave it behind. And then later on, a couple of decades down the road - you know, I live mostly in California - I started to go back to Rhode Island, where a lot of the first book is set, and I fell in love with the place again, and I felt that I could write it, perhaps in a better and more mature way than I could have done 20 years earlier.

SIMON: Did you feel a kinship with Danny?

WINSLOW: I think so. You know, I grew up with a lot of Danny'. I played pond hockey with them. I went to the beaches with them, you know, to the bars and restaurants and all kinds of things. So it's funny how little self-awareness you can have. The second volume of this book, "City Of Dreams," is basically Danny wandering the country trying to find a place to set his feet. I was deep into writing the third book before I looked back on the second book and realized how connected I was to Danny in that regard. You know, I left Rhode Island when I was 17 and spent decades wandering not only the country but the world, doing various kinds of jobs trying to make a living, trying without a notable degree of success to become a writer and finally kind of made that happen and found a place, if you will, to set my feet.

SIMON: You mentioned all the jobs you had. You were a private eye in Times Square.

WINSLOW: Yes, sir.

SIMON: Is that as exciting as it sounds, or is it a lot of keyhole peeping?

WINSLOW: (Laughter) Not too much keyhole peeping, thank God. You know, I didn't do what they call matrimonial work. But, no, it was not romantic at all. I was basically what is known as a street rat. And so I started that by investigating embezzlement and thefts in cinemas and legit movie theaters on Times Square - there were a few in those days - and then graduated, if you want to call it that, to being a troll. I would walk around Times Square trying to get mugged, and there were big tough guys, which I am not, behind me jumping in like riders at the rodeo and then eventually chasing runaways and trying to get to them before the pimps did.

SIMON: By the way, not that I'm interested in doing this, how do you arrange to get mugged?

WINSLOW: (Laughter) Well, for one thing, you arrange to be 5'6 and 130 pounds. That helps. And then you walk around looking like you don't know where you're going, like you're a tourist, with a wallet prominently in your back pants pocket.

SIMON: Wow. Sounds like it was indispensable to your literature.

WINSLOW: In some ways. You know, I mean, I think that being a PI, and then later I did it out in California, out here, on a much higher kind of level. But it got me in that world. I got to know cops and crooks and street people and lawyers and judges and courtrooms and all of that. But I think the most important influence it had on my work was in terms of investigation itself. I learned how to do research. I learned how to interview people. And the same skills that I would have used as an investigator are the skills that I brought to researching the novels.

SIMON: All of this steers us to asking about your goodbye. The acknowledgments you write include hundreds of people, parents...

WINSLOW: Yes.

SIMON: ...readers, old teachers...

WINSLOW: Sure.

SIMON: ...Even your agent.

WINSLOW: Especially my agent. Yeah.

SIMON: And as you say, goodbyes are hard. So why are you retiring?

WINSLOW: It's the confluence of two streams, if you will. One is that having finished this trilogy felt like an ending to me. It felt like, yeah, kind of my life's work. The second, though, major stream, and probably more important one, is that I just think that we're at a time in this country of crisis and a time where democracy is under a severe threat. And I think that the response to that needs to be more immediate than one can do in a novel, you know? You know, I'm not young. I'm 70. And I think whatever energies and time I have are better spent in that fight.

SIMON: Don Winslow, his new and insists his last novel, "City In Ruins." Thanks so much for being with us, and thanks for everything.

WINSLOW: Thank you very much. That's gracious of you to say.

Jewish-focused hotel proposed to be built near Las Vegas Strip

LAS VEGAS ( KVVU /Gray News) - A proposed hotel by the Las Vegas Strip will offer features for the faithful that Jewish leaders, tourists and locals say have been needed for years.

Documents submitted to the Clark County Zoning Commission show the King David Hotel would be 648 feet high with 486 rooms and be built at a site less than a mile from the famed Las Vegas Strip.

“The proposed hotel includes a place of worship [synagogue] with uses and amenities aligned with the Jewish faith and culture,” a justification letter to County planning officials read.

“The uses and amenities provided in the hotel will include the standard fare as well as kosher restaurants and amenities which are otherwise unavailable in the immediate area.”

The nearest synagogue is currently Chabad of Southern Nevada, which is about 5 miles away from the Vegas Strip.

Rabbi Levi Harlig said the house of worship sees up to 100 tourists on weekends who make their way through Strip traffic for prayer.

According to Harlig, another synagogue has been needed for some time with so many visitors coming to Las Vegas.

KVVU reports that a big challenge for business travelers is the lack of kosher options across the Strip.

The proposed hotel and its restaurants and banquets could accommodate large groups and host important religious occasions like weddings, bat mitzvahs, holidays or events.

Dr. Amanda Belarmino of the William F. Harrah College of Hospitality tracks tourism trends and has helped properties accommodate Jewish guests during the Sabbath and holidays.

“A property that’s built to that is going to cater to an underserved audience,” she said. “There are some niches that can be filled by non-gaming properties, and maybe this is one of them.”

The developer declined to comment on the proposal until it makes its way through the Clark County Commission.
