Since 2006, The Best & Brightest Awards have awarded more than $676,000 to more than 1,970 students in Leon County. 

Founded in 2006, the Best & Brightest Awards is designed to recognize and honor Leon County’s excelling high school seniors. Unlike most scholarship programs, awards are not based solely on GPA. The varying categories of the Best & Brightest Awards allow students who excel in a particular field to be rewarded for their hard work and dedication. There is also emphasis on community service and civic duty. Nine years ago, the Best & Brightest Awards added a new element, the 8th Grade Essay Contest. This contest is integral in catching the attention of younger students in Leon County and instilling the importance of community service before they begin their high school careers. The scholarship program is a partnership between local Leon County area public and private schools and World Class Schools of Leon County.

Best and Brightest Honors Top Seniors

The Best and Brightest Awards recognized Leon County’s most noteworthy seniors from public and private high schools at this year’s eighth annual ceremony. The top 45 students – three winners in each of 15 categories – were recognized Wednesday night for their unparalleled dedication to both community service and academic excellence. In this eighth year of the program, over $350,000 in scholarships have been awarded to over 1,000 students and their schools.

“It takes many individuals a lifetime to learn the value of service. These remarkable students who make up Tallahassee’s Best and Brightest conduct their everyday lives with a wisdom and moral fortitude beyond their years,” said Ron Sachs, President of Sachs Media Group and founder of the scholarship program. “Congratulations to everyone. May you continue to inspire us all and a make lasting impressions on this community.”

On March 2, three-judge panels interviewed the school-based winners in the 15 categories to explore each student’s character and volunteer experience. The winner, runner-up and honorable mention honorees in each category were awarded with scholarships at last night’s ceremony.

Thanks to the generosity of the Best and Brightest sponsors, scholarship amounts awarded were $1,500 for winners, $750 for runners-up and $500 for honorable mention honorees. All of the school-based winners receive at least a $100 scholarship for their outstanding achievements, in addition to a Best and Brightest Awards medallion. It is also the third year for the Best and Brightest eighth-grade scholarship essay contest, aimed to encourage Leon County’s rising high school students to plan to be involved in service to school and community. The first-place winner of the essay contest was awarded $500, the runner up received $250 and the honorable mention honoree was awarded $100.

Leon County announces student finalists for Best & Brightest Awards

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Leon County’s most outstanding high school seniors were selected this week as the 158 finalists in 2018 for the 13th Anniversary of the Best & Brightest Awards.

The awards recognize and honor public and private school students who excel both academically and in service to school and community.

The finalists from each school will next undergo an interview process culminating in the Best & Brightest Awards Ceremony, to be held May 16 at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall, at which countywide winners will be announced.

“This year’s student leaders who are so deservedly honored in this program reflect the highest caliber of dedication to academics and demonstrate excellence in all that they do,” said Laura Rogers, program director of World Class Schools and coordinator of The Best & Brightest Awards. “I am proud to recognize these young people who place a priority on service to others as an ethic to be embraced for life.”

The program has recognized more than 1,800 exceptional public and private high school seniors and awarded more than $575,000 in scholarships since its inception.

The program is sponsored by Envision Credit Union, in partnership with Leon County Schools, World Class Schools of Leon County, The Tallahassee Democrat, Sachs Media Group, Rogers Gunter Vaughn Insurance, NAI Talcor, Sperry & Associates, Florida Cancer Specialists and The Florida League of Cities.

On March 3, panels of select community leaders will interview the 2018 finalists on topics such as foreign language, technology and drama to determine the winners of the countywide awards.

This year, 158 finalists will be evaluated on their academic achievement, leadership, and community service. A winner, runner-up, and honorable mention recipient will be named from each category.

To reach this point, finalists have demonstrated a solid record of academic achievement and expertise in one of 15 competitive categories in addition to school and community service.

First-place winners in each category will receive scholarships of $1,500; runners-up will be awarded $750; and honorable mention recipients will receive $500. All other finalists will receive a $100 scholarship in recognition of their superlative accomplishments.

In addition to celebrating high school students, the Best & Brightest Awards program reaches out to younger Leon County students. The program conducts an Eighth Grade Essay Contest, and three students from across the county will win awards ranging from $100 to $500.

The contest provides middle school students with much-needed positive reinforcement and helps encourage them to reflect on the importance of community involvement and academic achievement as they enter their high school careers.

Another feature of the program, first introduced six years ago, is the Spirit of the Best & Brightest Award, presented to the Best & Brightest winner who best exhibits a deep commitment to civic duty and service. That student will receive a $2,500 scholarship commemorating the late Brooks Rogers, in addition to his or her Best & Brightest scholarship award winnings.

Seniors shine at Best & Brightest Awards Ceremony

The 14th Annual Best & Brightest Awards Ceremony took place on Wednesday at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall to award scholarships to high-achieving and well-deserving high school graduates for their leadership skills, academic accomplishments and community service involvement.

The keynote speakers were previous Best & Brightest Spirit of the Best & Brightest winners, sisters Zemoria and Zenani Johnson.

The 8th Grade Essay contest honored 49 students who ranked in the top three essayists from their middle schools. Three students’ essays were selected as the top winners and received $100 to $500 and all received a certificate. The topic of the essay was experience helping others in the community. 

The Spirit of the Best & Brightest Award was given to Yunus Kovankaya, a Lincoln High School student and a runner-Up from the mathematics category. The spirit award included $2,500 in scholarship money.  

 “At such a young age, Yunus is already an accomplished servant leader and change maker in his local community,” said Cat Keen, National Service Programs Director at Volunteer Florida. “We strive to cultivate and celebrate that kind of civic engagement at Volunteer Florida, and therefore, we are proud to present him with the Excellence in Volunteerism Award.”

The awards have expanded since their first year in 2006. About 80 students were given scholarships during the program’s inaugural year. This year 155 seniors were selected from local public and private high schools to be finalists in each of the 15 categories.
