Makale yazarken küçük bir post-it’e makalenizin konusunu yazarak sürekli gözünüzün önünde duracak şekilde bir yere yapıştırmamız işe yarayacaktır. Çünkü “cause and effect essay”leri yazarken konudan ayrılmadan makaleyi devam ettirmek önemlidir. “ Cause and Effect Essay ” yazımına daha yakından bakacak olursak, yazacağınız makalelerin ilk paragrafları genel bilgiler içermelidir. Çünkü bahsedeceğimiz konuyu en genel hatlarıyla yazmaya başlamamız önemlidir. İlk paragrafta en genel hali ile verilen konu giderek darlaşarak özelleşecektir. Bir örnek vermek gerekirse kitap okumanın öneminden bahsedeceğimiz bir makale yazacaksak, hangi sosyal etkinliklerin genel olarak insanlara ne gibi yararları olduğunu anlatmaya başlamak iyi bir giriş olabilir. Bu paragrafa İngilizcede “general statement” adı verilir.

Unutmamamız gereken bir diğer nokta ilk paragraf olarak başladığımız bu “general state-ment” paragrafını bir “thesis statement” yani tez cümlesi ile bitirmeyi başarmamızdır. Bu demek oluyor ki yazdığımız bu ilk paragrafın en son cümlesi yazacağımız yazımızın tezini açıklamalıdır.

Peki “Thesis Statement” nedir ve nasıl yazılmalıdır?

Öncelikle “thesis statement”in sadece bir cümle olması gerektiğini belirtmemiz gerekiyor. Ayrıca bu cümle gelişme bölümünde daha sonra bahsedeceğimiz kısımları da kapsayan içerikli bir cümle olmalıdır. “Thesis statement” yazımından sonra ilk paragrafa geçilmelidir.

Bir durum örneği vermek gerekirse iki body paragraflık bir yazıda ilk paragrafta ilk sebep ikinci paragrafta ise ikinci sebep açıklanmalıdır. İki paragrafın ortak noktası ise ikisinde de olayların nedenlerinin anlatılması gerektiğidir. Yazımıza genel olarak bir bakış attığımızda elimizde toplamda 3 adet sebep (cause) durumu ve 3 adet de sonuç (effect) durumu olmalıdır.

Bir örnek ile açıklayalım: Çevre kirliliği ile ilgili bir makale yazacağımızı düşünelim. Vereceğimiz sebeplerin ilki çevre kirliliğine yol açan fabrikalar ikincisi ise bireysel olarak yapılan çevre kirliliği olsun. Bu şekilde kabul ettiğimizde ilk paragrafta konudan sapmadan fabrikaların yol açtığı çevre kirliliklerinden bahsetmemiz gerekmektedir. Bu konuda vereceğimiz örnekler, kullanacağımız istatistikler ve konu ile ilgili kitaplardan alacağımız alıntılar önemlidir. İkinci paragrafta ise yine aynı şekilde sadece bireysel olarak neden olunan çevre kirliliklerinden örneklerle, istatistiklerle ve alıntılarla bahsetmemiz gerekir.

İlk başta da söylediğimiz gibi bunlar body paragraf olacaktır ve buralarda sadece sebeplerden (cause) bahsetmemiz gerekir. Body paragraflarda sonuçlardan bahsedecek olursak yazının gidişatını bozmuş ve “cause - effect” gidişatına sadık kalmamış oluruz.

3. Body Paragraf

3. body paragrafta önemli olan ilk adımda herhangi bir konu cümlesiyle başlamak gerektiğidir. Burada “the first effect is..” şeklinde bir yapı kullanamayız. Çünkü öncelikle daha önce yazdığımız sebepler ile yazacağımız sonuçlar arasında bir geçiş paragrafı yani bir “transition sentence” oluşturmamız gerekir.

Bir örnek vermek gerekirse “There are some causes of A and two effects which are B and C. The first effect is…” şeklinde bağlayabiliriz. Burada kullanabileceğimiz bir başka yapı da şu şekilde olabilir: “Having looked at the causes of X the effect can be given as “C” and “D”.The first effect is……”

Bu şekilde sunmayı düşündüğünüz effectleri bir geçiş paragrafı ile belirtmiş olursunuz.

4. Body Paragraf

3. ve 4. Body Paragraflarda dikkat etmeniz gereken bu paragraflarda artık sonuç odaklı yazmanızdır. Burada bir “re-state” yapmamız gerekecektir. “Re-state”in anlamı burada aslında “thesis statement”i tamamlayan ve aynı anlama gelen başka bir cümle yazmaktır.

Son paragrafınızın 6. paragraf olduğunu düşünürsek bu paragrafta buraya kadar yazılanları bir kaç cümle ile özetlemeniz makalenizi güzelleştirir ve bir bütünlük sağlar. Ancak bunu yapmayanlar için bu son paragrafta direk “final comment” de yazılabilir. “Final comment”in anlamı burada sebep ve sonuçlarını yazdığımız durum için çözümler, öneriler şeklinde olmalıdır. Burada da dikkat edilmesi gereken bu son paragrafta “I think”, “In my opinion”, “According to” gibi yazım biçimlerini kullanmamamızdır. Son kısımda yeni fikirler ortaya atmak makalenizin eksik yazılmış gibi bir algı yaratmasına neden olacaktır.

Son olarak yazdıklarımızı özetleyecek ve önemli noktaları tekrar edecek olursak; 

“Topic sentence” paragrafın ilk cümlesi olmalıdır ve paragrafın hangi konuda devam edeceğini bize bildirir. Paragrafın sonunda ise “topic sentence”i tamamlayan ve yazılanları bir cümle halinde toparlayan bir sonuç cümlesi (concluding sentence) bulunmalıdır. “Con-cluding sentence”in  başında kullanılabilecek edatlar şu şekilde sıralanabilir:

“to sum up”,

“to summarize”,

“to conclude”,

“in conclusion”

Akademik alanda yazılacak Essayler de kabul edilecek olan edatlar bu şekildedir ve yazımızda doğru edatları kullanmamız da yazımızın içeriği kadar önemlidir.

Yazımızın en sonunda ise, sonuç olarak şeklinde kullanabileceğiniz edatlar şu şekilde sıralanabilir:

“As a result”,

“As a consequence”,

“Consequently”

Genel olarak dikkat edilmesi gereken yazılacak cümlelerin çok uzun ve karışık olmasından kaçınılmasıdır. Başlık seçiminde de çok edebi başlıklar seçmek yerine konuyu anlatan başlıkların seçimi daha etkili olacaktır. Çünkü makale yazarken anlam bütünlüğünün sağlanması ve anlatmak istediğiniz içeriğin düzenli bir şekilde aktarılması büyük önem taşır.

Essay yazmak; kriterleri öğrenildiğinde herkesin yazabileceği bir metin türüdür. Yazılan bir essay, daha sonra ilgili kanıtlarla desteklenen sağlam bir tartışma konusu yaratabilmelidir. Essay yazmadan önce yaptığınız araştırma, standart bir kural dizisini takip eder.

Essay yazmak için bazı temel ilkeleri hatırlamak, zaman sıkıntısı yaşıyor olsanız bile etkili ve akılda kalıcı metinler oluşturmanıza olanak tanır. Peki essay nasıl yazılır ? Essay yazma konusunda kendinizi nasıl geliştirebilirsiniz? Etkili bir essay yazmak ve essay yazma becerinizi geliştirmek için bilmeniz gereken bazı temel adımlar vardır. Essay Nasıl Yazılır?

1.Essay Türünüze Karar Verin

Essay yazmanın ilk adımı hangi essay türünde yazacağınıza karar vermektir. Pek çok essay türü vardır. Bunlardan bazıları şu şekildedir;

• Compare-contrast essay:  Bu essay türünde iki benzer şeyi karşılaştırılarak bir argüman ortaya konulur.

2.Giriş–Gelişme ve Sonuç Bölümlerinin Olmasına Dikkat Edin

İngilizce essay yazılırken etkili bir giriş yapmalısınız okuyucu bu giriş yazısından etkilenip diğer bölümlere geçmek için istekli olabilsin. Her zaman başlagıçlar önemlidir etkili bir başlangıç içinse tavsiye olarak genelde bir paragraf olması önerilir. Karşıdakini sıkmayan içine alan bir giriş yazısı. Dikkat çekici bir başlangıç için essaye ilgi çekecek, tartışmalı bir alıntı ya da şaşırtıcı bir istatistiki bilgi ile başlayabilirsiniz. çok fazla ayrıntılı vermemelisiniz.

Gelişme bölümünde ise asıl konuya geçip açık ve net bir şekilde konunuzdan bahsetmelisiniz. farklı alıntılarla ve örneklerle ilgi çekici hale getirebilirsiniz.

Sonuç bölümüne geldiğinizde tüm yazıda bahsettiklerinizin kaba bir özeti olan bu paragraf yalnızca birkaç cümleden oluşmalıdır giriş bölümünde bahsettiğiniz ana fikri bu bölümde de yinelemelisiniz.

Yaptığınız alıntılar ve örnekler muhakkak konu ile uyumlu olmalıdır. Gelişme paragrafları yazınızın özünü oluşturmaktadır. Bol bol araştırma yapıp okuyarak  düşüncelerinizi en sağlam şekilde ortaya koymalısınız.

3.Konu Fikri Bulmak için Beyin Fırtınası Yapın

Konunuza karar veremediyseniz essay yazamazsınız. Konu bulmak konusunda kararsızsanız beyin fırtınası yapabilirsiniz. Tek yapmanız gereken, sakince oturup düşünmektir. Bu süreçte elinize bir kağıt kalem alıp aklınıza gelen fikirleri yazabilirsiniz. Beyin fırtınası konunuzu bulmanın yanında konuyla ilgili çeşitli bakış açıları edinmenize de yardımcı olacaktır.

4.Essay Yazmadan Önce Taslak Oluşturun

Bir essay yazmanın en önemli adımlarından birisi, o essay için bir taslak (outline) oluşturmaktır. Taslak oluşturmadan önce essayin ele aldığı konuyu tam olarak anlamanız oldukça önemlidir. Bir essay etkili bir şekilde ifade edilebilir ve düşünülebilir ancak konuyu yeterince yanıtlamazsa etkisiz bir metin olarak nitelendirilecektir. Yazacağınız essay için bir taslak oluştururken aşağıdaki konuları ele almanız sizin için büyük kolaylık sağlayacaktır:

• Essayin konusu nedir?
• Essayinizin kelime hacmi ne kadar olmalı?
• Konuyu tam olarak anlamak için ne tür bir araştırma yapmanız gerekir?

Bu aşamalardan sonra essayiniz için taslak oluşturmanın ilk adımını tamamlamış olursunuz. Sıradaki adım ise tüm metninize rehberlik edecek bir tez cümlesi (thesis statement) belirlemektir. Tez cümlesinden yola çıkarak, makalenizin nasıl ilerlemesi gerektiğini ve hangi bilgileri dahil etmek istediğinizi belirleyebilirsiniz.

Peki essayinizde ele alacağınız konu nedir? Tez cümleniz kısa olmalı ancak ele almak istediğiniz konuyu tüm ana hatları ile metninize dahil etmelidir. Makalenizi yazarken sürekli olarak tez cümlenize bakın ve konuyu ana hatlarından saptırmamaya özen gösterin.

Taslağı oluşturduktan sonra metninizi yazmaya başlayabilirsiniz. Genel olarak herkes essay yazmaya giriş (introduction) paragrafından başlar. Essay yazarken giriş paragrafından başlamak birçok insanın bildiği en büyük yanlışlardan birisidir. Essayinizi yazmaya gelişme (body) paragrafından başlamak size büyük avantaj sağlayacaktır. Metninizin akıcı olmasını istiyorsanız giriş paragrafını daha sonra yazmanız gerekir. Bu şekilde, düşüncelerinizi ve fikirlerinizi tam olarak oluşturabilir ve geri dönüp ana fikirleri giriş paragrafınız ile entegre edebilirsiniz.

5.Essayi Oluşturmadan Önce Ön Araştırma Yapın

Essay yazmadan önce yapacağınız ön araştırma, yazacağınız metin hakkında yeterince bilgi sahibi olmanıza yardımcı olur. Bu şekilde hem essayiniz etkili olacak hem de metninizi sağlam kanıtlarla yazmış olacaksınız.

Konuyla ilgili araştırma yaparken öncelikle essay yazacağınız konu ile ilgili makaleleri incelemek size artı puan kazandıracaktır. Konuyu nasıl savunacağınızı anladıktan sonra essay için bir giriş (introduction) ve sonuç (conclusion) paragrafı yazmanız gerekir.

Essay yazarken en çok gözden kaçan hususlardan birisi de sonuç paragrafıdır. Sonuç paragrafı, tez cümleniz ile tüm araştırmanızı birbirine bağlayan paragraftır. Sonuç paragrafı, tez cümlesiyle veya giriş paragrafı ile aynı olmamalıdır.

Uygun bir sonuç paragrafı, bir essayde tartışılan tüm olguların ana hatlarını ortaya koymalıdır. Bu olgular, kişinin araştırmasının ana argümanını nasıl kanıtladığını veya çürüttüğünü göstermek için doğrudan tez cümlesine bağlı olmalıdır. Tüm bunları destekleyecek nitelikli bir essay için ise ön araştırma ve bilgi sahibi olmak oldukça önemlidir.

7.Essayinizi Tekrar Okuyun

Yazdığınız essayi tekrar okumak harika bir essay oluşturmak için oldukça kritiktir. Birçok insan, dilbilgisi açısından zayıf veya yazım hatalarıyla dolu bir metni okumayı dahi tamamlamaz. Dilbilgisi ve yazım kurallarına uygun bir metin oluşturmak için ise her zaman essayinizi kontrol etmeniz gerekir. Essay Türleri Nelerdir?

Görüşlerinizi giriş paragrafında açıkça ifade ettikten sonra gelişme bölümünde bu fikri savunmanızın sebeplerinden bahsetmelisiniz ve bu düşünceye karşı geliştirilen olası  savunmalara cevaplar vermeniz ve sonuç bölümünde ise tartıştıklarınızı özet bir şekilde tekrar ederek fikrinizi belirtmelisiniz.

5- Advantage and Disadvantage Essay (Bir konunun olumlu ve olumsuz yönlerini tartıştığımız yazı)

Bu makale türünde sizden belli bir konu başlığının olumlu ve olumsuz yönlerinden bahsederek fayda ve zarar tartışması yapmanız istenilir. Bu tarz sorularda faydaları ve zararları ayrı paragraflarda sunmak ve üçüncü bir paragrafta bunları birbiri ile karşılaştırarak konu başlığına dair olumlu veya olumsuz bir sonuca varmak düzenli ve sistematik bir makale çıkarmanıza yardımcı olacaktır.

6- Problem Solution Essay (Problem Çözme Yazısı)

Bu yazı türünde sizden özellikle gündemi meşgul eden bir probleme çözüm getirmeniz istenilir. Örneğin: ‘How can we stop global warming?’ ‘Küresel ısınmayı nasıl durdurabiliriz?’. Writing a Cause-and-Effect Essay

Choose an event or condition that you think has an interesting cause-and-effect relationship. Introduce your topic in an engaging way. End your introduction with a thesis that states the main cause, the main effect, or both.

Organize your essay by starting with either the cause-then-effect structure or the effect-then-cause structure. Within each section, you should clearly explain and support the causes and effects using a full range of evidence. If you are writing about multiple causes or multiple effects, you may choose to sequence either in terms of order of importance . In other words, order the causes from least to most important (or vice versa), or order the effects from least important to most important (or vice versa).

Use the phrases of causation when trying to forge connections between various events or conditions. This will help organize your ideas and orient the reader. End your essay by drawing a conclusion based on the information presented. You may find it helpful to think of the conclusion as an answer to the question: “so what” or as a continuation of the statement “and so... “. In some cases, may be appropriate to issue a call to action in your essay’s conclusion.

Effects of Video Game Addiction

Video game addition is a serious problem in many parts of the world today and deserves more attention. It is no secret that children and adults in many countries throughout the world, including Japan, China, and the United States, play video games every day. Most players are able to limit their usage in ways that do not interfere with their daily lives, but many others have developed an addiction to playing video games and suffer detrimental effects.

An addiction can be described in several ways, but generally speaking, addictions involve unhealthy attractions to substances or activities that ultimately disrupt the ability of a person to keep up with regular daily responsibilities. Video game addiction typically involves playing games uncontrollably for many hours at a time—some people will play only four hours at a time while others cannot stop for over twenty-four hours. Regardless of the severity of the addiction, many of the same effects will be experienced by all.

One common effect of video game addiction is isolation and withdrawal from social experiences. Video game players often hide in their homes or in Internet cafés for days at a time—only reemerging for the most pressing tasks and necessities. The effect of this isolation can lead to a breakdown of communication skills and often a loss in socialization. While it is true that many games, especially massive multiplayer online games, involve a very real form of e-based communication and coordination with others, and these virtual interactions often result in real communities that can be healthy for the players, these communities and forms of communication rarely translate to the types of valuable social interaction that humans need to maintain typical social functioning. As a result, the social networking in these online games often gives the users the impression that they are interacting socially, while their true social lives and personal relations may suffer.

Another unfortunate product of the isolation that often accompanies video game addiction is the disruption of the user’s career. While many players manage to enjoy video games and still hold their jobs without problems, others experience challenges at their workplace. Some may only experience warnings or demerits as a result of poorer performance, or others may end up losing their jobs altogether. Playing video games for extended periods of time often involves sleep deprivation, and this tends to carry over to the workplace, reducing production and causing habitual tardiness.

Video game addiction may result in a decline in overall health and hygiene. Players who interact with video games for such significant amounts of time can go an entire day without eating and even longer without basic hygiene tasks, such as using the restroom or bathing. The effects of this behavior pose significant danger to their overall health.

The causes of video game addiction are complex and can vary greatly, but the effects have the potential to be severe. Playing video games can and should be a fun activity for all to enjoy. But just like everything else, the amount of time one spends playing video games needs to be balanced with personal and social responsibilities.

Cause and Effect essay là dạng bài tiểu luận về một chủ đề, yêu cầu người làm bài nêu ra các nguyên nhân (cause) và ảnh hưởng (effect) của chủ đề đó. Đây là dạng bài phổ biến trong bài thi IELTS Writing Task 2 .

Bên cạnh kỹ năng viết, dạng bài này sẽ kiểm tra tư duy nhìn nhận và đánh giá của thí sinh. Đề bài Cause and Effect essay thường là những hiện tượng trong đời sống, vì vậy các bạn có kiến thức xã hội sẽ có nhiều dữ kiện để đánh giá đề bài hơn.

Cách lên ý tưởng cho dạng Cause and Effect essay

Để viết cause and effect essay nhanh mà vẫn đảm bảo bố cục chặt chẽ, bạn cần liệt kê các yếu tố sau từ đề bài:

• Từ 2 – 3 nguyên nhân:

Bạn có thể nêu nguyên nhân xuất phát từ hoạt động (activities)/thói quen (habits)/tập quán (traditions) của con người.

Ví dụ: physical activities (hoạt động thể chất), daily habit (thói quen hàng ngày), family tradition (truyền thống gia đình)

• Từ 2 – 3 ảnh hưởng:

Bạn có thể nêu những tác động (tiêu cực/tích cực hay trực tiếp/gián tiếp) đến con người (humans), môi trường (environment), xã hội (society), Chính phủ (government).

• Giải pháp cho vấn đề:

Dựa vào nguyên nhân đã chọn, bạn có thể suy ra hướng giải quyết để cải thiện tác động của vấn đề.

Cấu trúc và cách viết Cause and Effect essay

Phần 1: mở bài.

Tương tự như các dạng bài Writing Task 2 khác, phần mở bài của Cause and Effect essay cũng sẽ bao gồm 2 phần:

• Tóm tắt lại bối cảnh của bài viết – bạn nên paraphrase lại đề bài để tối ưu thời gian.
• Nêu quan điểm chính ( thesis statement ) của bạn – hãy dựa vào yêu cầu của đề bài và viết lại thành câu hoàn chỉnh.

Phần 2: Causes

Đoạn văn thứ 2 chỉ tập trung hoàn toàn vào Causes gồm 3 yếu tố:

• Câu topic sentence : ngắn gọn, xúc tích nhưng vẫn đảm bảo giúp cho người đọc nhận biết rằng bạn chuẩn bị viết về causes của điều gì.
• Nguyên nhân thứ nhất và các ý bổ sung: hãy đề cập đến cause đầu tiên và chứng minh với người đọc cause bạn đưa ra là hợp lý.
• Các nguyên nhân còn lại và các ý bổ trợ: làm tương tự với các nguyên nhân còn lại.

Phần 3: Effects

Điểm khác duy nhất ở đoạn văn thứ 3 so với đoạn trên là thay vì tập trung hoàn toàn vào Causes thì bây giờ bạn sẽ chỉ viết về Effect:

• Câu topic sentence: ngắn gọn và đảm bảo giúp cho người đọc nhận biết rằng bạn chuẩn bị viết về effect của của đề tài.
• Ảnh hưởng thứ nhất và các ý bổ sung: viết effect đầu tiên và chứng minh với người đọc tại sao là có effect như vậy.
• Các ảnh hưởng còn lại và các ý bổ trợ: làm tương tự với các ảnh hưởng còn lại.

Phần 4: Kết luận

Phần kết luận của cause and effect essay cần nêu lại những ý sau:

• Nhấn mạnh lại chủ đề đang viết
• Tóm tắt các causes được nhắc đến
• Tóm tắt các effect được đưa ra

Trả lời câu hỏi 1:  Nguyên nhân khiến người lao động muốn có nhiều công việc cùng một lúc:

• Nhiều nguồn thu nhập giúp khả năng tài chính của bản thân vững chắc hơn. Khi một

nguồn thu nhập bị cắt đứt thì vẫn có thể dựa vào những nguồn khác.

• Nhiều cơ hội để thử sức trên nhiều lĩnh vực để tìm ra đam mê của bản thân.

Trả lời câu hỏi 2:  Xu hướng trên mang đến ích lợi hay bất cập?

• Nhiều người nghĩ “Có nhiều việc làm cũng một lúc có thể mang lại nhiều lợi ích”

>< thực chất hiện trang này khiến người lao động không thế đạt được mục tiêu nghề nghiệp đã đặt ra vì thiếu thời gian, phải lo nghĩ những yếu tố ngoài lề khác.

Nowadays, employees are likely to  opt for  different jobs at the same time. This essay will firstly suggest diversified  income sources  to be the goal  underlying  this phenomenon, and secondly, consider whether the overall impact of this development has been positive or negative . 

Without uncertainty, having many jobs at the same time allows people to grow  multiple  income streams. In fact,  owing to  the current popularity of part-time or freelance employment, many employees are struggling to make ends meet with only one source of income, and they are also  finding  job security, health insurance and vacations to be  privileges  of work benefits, rather than  rights . In these cases, having multiple jobs at once helps people improve their  financial stability,  and ensure avoidance of disaster if either job is  disrupted . Celebrities are typical examples,  whose  volatile career paths had left many vulnerable  to  bankruptcy  before  side businesses  became the norm in the industry. David Beckham, as an illustration, makes a good living out of his fashion brand  post-hayday  in comparison to his co-worker Ronaldinho, who  ran dry  his hundred-million-dollar fortune not long after retirement.

In regards to the effect of this phenomenon, disadvantages can overwhelm advantages. One of the main problems of having multiple jobs at the same time is the low possibility to  commit to  important goals for  career development . More specifically, it can be challenging for people with multiple jobs to win high achievements, as those require serious  devotion of  time and effort towards a single project, which is highly unrealistic,  given  the  occupying  of other  priorities  in their limited schedule. As a result, they need to make greater effort than others in terms of time management, discipline and productivity, or else,  notable achievements  in any  career paths  are beyond their reach..

In conclusion, while people think that taking different jobs at the same time allows them to boost their financial stability ,  it can make them become  mediocre  compared to competing  professionals  in their fields.
