KPSC KAS Selection Process 2024

For a career in Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) the Karnataka Public Service Commission conducts the KPSC KAS Exam 2024 in three stages:

Stage 1: The first stage is the Preliminary Exam: the preliminary exam will have 2 papers based on objective type (MCQs) questions.
Stage 2: The second is the Mains consisting of 7 papers. These papers are based on
Stage 3: Candidates qualifying in the main stage will appear for the final Interview round of the KPSC KAS 2024.

KPSC Karnataka Administrative Service Exam Pattern 2024

The Karnataka Public Service Commission also known as KPSC recruitment board for the state of Karnataka. It was established five years after Indian Independence i.e., in the year 1951 on the 18 th May 1951. A chairman heads KPSC along with a secretary, an examination controller, and a few other members. This commission consists of about 16 chairmen and 64 members. The present chairman of this commission is Mr. Shivashankarappa S Sahukar, the Secretary is Mr. Suralkar Vikas Kishor, and the controller of this examination is Ms. Nalini Atul.

There are about seven members of the commission who are solely responsible for the recruitment process. The headquarters is located in UDYOG Souda, Ambedkar Veedhi in the capital city of Karnataka, Bengaluru. This board recruits’ candidates by conducting various examinations and interviews for various services.

KPSC Eligibility Criteria

The KPSC exam is one of the top government exams in the state of Karnataka. Each candidate applying for the KPSC exam 2024 must be fulfilling all the criteria to give the examination. Age limit plays a huge role in selecting candidates for any competitive examination. This age limit is similar across different job roles. However, the age limit differs according to social categories. The minimum age limit to appear for the KPSC exam is 21 years. Candidates without admit cards are not allowed to enter the exam center.

The first stage of the examination is the preliminary exam. Candidates who pass the preliminary exam are eligible to take the mains exam. KPSC Prelims Exam Pattern

There are two papers in the preliminary exam.
Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are the main component of each of these papers.
The language of the exam is English.
The results of this examination are simply qualifying; they do not count towards merit.
Each of these papers lasts two hours.

Negative marking is a system for which each wrong answers 0.25 points are deducted.

KPSC Mains Exam Pattern

The Mains Examination is the second phase The candidates who qualify in the KPSC prelims exam become eligible to appear for the KPSC Mains exam.

Mains exam papers are of descriptive type.
There are a total of 7 (seven) papers in the KPSC mains exam.
When determining final marks, the Mains scores are taken into consideration for merit.
Each paper will last for three hours.
The language of the question paper will be English and Kannada.
The written test consists of descriptive type question papers, with only one of those papers serving as the qualifying structure.
There is no negative marking.
The standard of Kannada and English language papers is SSLC level first language Kannada and first language English. The total marks for the rest of the 5 papers are 1250. 2 papers qualifying papers of Kannada/English language is of 150 marks each and 5 (five) papers each of 250 marks.

After passing the Mains exam with the required certification mark, candidates are invited to the personal interview.

KPSC Interview

The personal interview is the final stage of the KPSC’s hiring procedure. Candidates who pass both the preliminary and the main examinations show up for the interview.

In essence, the purpose of the interview is to assess the applicants’ level of cognitive ability. The purpose of it is to evaluate the potential applicants’ social and academic abilities.
The majority of the interview’s questions revolve around current affairs or big-picture issues that are relevant to the nation or the world. KPSC KAS Exam Pattern 2023

The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) conducts the Gazetted Probationers exam for recruiting Grade A and B officers in the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS). This article aims to give a complete overview of the KPSC KAS exam pattern and other related information for the year 2023.

Usually, the KPSC KAS exam is conducted every year but for the last few years, it has been conducted less frequently. Until recently, KPSC KAS 2017-18 Prelims took place on 24th August 2020. KAS Mains 2017-18 will take place between 13th and 16th February 2021.

For a career in the administrative services of the Karnataka state, the Gazetted Probationers exam is the entry point. Those who clear the exam hold various administrative positions at the district and state level. Also, the state administrative service officer can be promoted to the Indian Administrative Service if their performance is exemplary.

After the recent amendments in the Karnataka Gazetted Probationers recruitment rules, the KAS exam pattern resembles the UPSC Civil Service exam pattern to a significant extent.

KAS Exam Pattern 2023

As per the latest Karnataka Recruitment of Gazetted Probationers (Appointment by Competitive Examinations) (Amendment) Rules, the KAS aspirants have to clear the 2-stage exam. The first stage is the Preliminary examination which comprises 2 papers with objective type questions.

The candidates who clear the Prelims become eligible for the Main stage of the exam. The Main stage of the KAS exam consists of a written examination and a personality test (interview). Hence, in effect, the KPSC KAS exam pattern is modelled quite closely on the lines of the UPSC IAS exam.

Prelims – 2 papers -objective type questions
Mains – 7 papers – essay/descriptive type

Exam Pattern of KAS Prelims 2023

The tentative date for the first stage of the KPSC KAS exam 2023 is still to be released by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC.) KPSC KAS Prelims 2017-18 took place on 24th August 2020.

The Prelims stage consists of two papers which are conducted in offline mode (pen-paper) on the same day. This stage has only objective type (MCQs) questions and it acts as a filtering stage for the Main examination.

The UPSC exam pattern is also on similar lines.

The marks in KAS Prelims are not counted for the final merit list, however, aspirants should prepare diligently as the cutoffs vary each year.

Both papers in Prelims consist of 100 questions each.
Each question is for 2 marks and negative marking of 0.25 marks for an incorrect answer.
The General Mental Ability questions will be of 10th standard level.

KPSC KAS Main Exam Pattern 2023

KPSC has altered the KAS exam pattern in August 2020. Two major alterations in the KPSC KAS exam pattern are:

Optional Papers are removed.
Marks assigned to KPSC KAS Personality test are slashed from 200 to 50.

The new exam pattern for the Main stage of the KPSC KAS exam is as follows:

Total of 7 papers
English and Kannada language papers are compulsory and qualifying in nature
At least 35% marks are needed to clear English/Kannada papers
The level of the questions will be of Honours degree level.
The questions are descriptive-essay type in nature and there is no negative marking
The question papers will be set in both Kannada and English.
The standard of Kannada and English language papers will be of First Language Kannada and First Language English at SSLC level, respectively.
Total marks – 1250

Personality Test

The candidates who score above the cutoff in the KAS Mains will be shortlisted for the interview with the KPSC board.

Update – Earlier, KAS Interview score was 200 which now has been slashed to 50.

Here are a few points to note:

Usually, the ratio of the total number of vacancies in that year and candidates called for an interview is 1:3. Reportedly, it has been increased to 1:5
The Personality test board is constituted by the KPSC Chairman
The board consists of 4 persons out of which there shall be 2 KPSC members
Retired All India Services officers
Eminent Professors (Retired) from IITs, IIMs, Central/State Universities
The panel will be chaired by the senior-most KPSC member present.
The maximum marks for the interview are 50
The panel members will not be told the candidate’s marks in the Mains stage.
The KAS interview is to test the mental calibre, societal awareness, balance of judgement and leadership abilities.
The 4 members panel will give marks individually and then the average of those marks will constitute the candidate’s marks in the interview.
The KPSC KAS result or the merit list is the sum of marks in the Mains and the Interview.
