How to Plan a Surprise Party: The Ultimate Guide

Looking for tips on how to plan a surprise party, organize the attendees, and keep the guest of honor in the dark until it’s time? Here are some instructions on how to plan the best possible surprise party for anyone and any occasion. Keep reading to discover some useful tips on a variety of surprise party types, as well as a step-by-step guide to planning every detail.

Learn how to plan a surprise party in 17 simple steps:

Follow these step-by-step instructions for how to plan a surprise party your friends, family, or client will talk about for years to come.

1. Make the decision.

Surprise parties are polarizing. People who love them really love them. People who hate them really hate them. Unless the guest of honor has specifically said they enjoy surprise parties or would want one, it’s hard to know if it’s a good idea.

Here are some ways to tell if  a surprise party is a good choice or not:

  • Ask someone who would know best (partner, close family member, etc.).
  • Tell the guest of honor about a recent surprise you loved and watch their reaction.
  • Reflect on how they reacted to surprises in the past.
  • Consider their personality ” someone who likes to go with the flow will likely enjoy a surprise party.

Weirdly enough, you should actually consider throwing a surprise party for the person who swears they don’t want one. According to Business Wire, 43.5% of the people who say they don’t want one actually do want that very same party. So unless there are strong reasons why they wouldn’t enjoy it (and no, not wanting people to go out of their way isn’t one of them), then do it!

2. Play Sherlock Holmes.

Get the guest of honor(s) to help plan the party without telling them about it by carefully investigating their party-related likes and dislikes. Use natural conversation to bring these ideas up, otherwise you might give it away.

You can:

  • Pretend you’re planning a party for someone else. Get their opinion on your Pinterest inspiration board.
  • Remind them of other parties you’ve been to together. Talk about what you liked.
  • Comment on celebrity parties you see on social media.

And don’t forget to use your other available resources. Friends, family, coworkers, and event stakeholders who are close to the guest of honor can all chip in their two cents.

Pro tip: Reserve the sleuthing for someone with a great poker face. If the guest of honor gets suspicious, you’ll need to convince them why they’re wrong and that there isn’t a party being planned for them.

3. Assemble your team.

You can plan a surprise party all by yourself.  But if you have friends, family, or coworkers who are willing to help you out, add the following roles to your mini planning committee:

  • Team lead: Communicates with every team member, creates and oversees a party-planning workflow.
  • Designer: Chooses the theme, color palette, and decorations.
  • Sponsor: Funds and/or defines the surprise party budget.
  • Runner: Runs errands and keeps track of expenses.
  • F&B manager: Cooks or coordinates all meals, snacks, and refreshments.
  • Guest manager: Creates a guest list, sends invitations, arranges transportation, and confirms RSVPs.
  • Guest of honor point person: Creates or implements the decoy plan that gets the guest of honor to the venue without ruining the surprise.

4. Start organizing.

To learn how to plan a surprise party, you need a checklist tool to track all tasks and a communication tool to coordinate everyone involved.  The most popular tools for for planning surprise parties include:

  • Facebook : Create a secret group, invite guests and collaborators, and add a Facebook Event with party details so guests can RSVP electronically.
  • WhatsApp : Start a private group and invite people to chat about details before the party.
  • Trello : Create and assign party planning tasks with due dates to keep everything on schedule.

5. Decide on a theme.

Base the theme on the guest of honor’s interests (fandoms, sports, and hobbies work well), the type of surprise party you’re throwing, and the color scheme you’d like to use. Also, choose a level of formality you’d like to have now. Casual parties work better for a surprise party because it’s easier to hide your preparation, but formal surprise parties can be pulled off with a little extra creativity.

Pro tip: The key to throwing a formal surprise party the guest of honor doesn’t see coming is to choose an upscale location that doesn’t seem too far out of the ordinary. Or, go with one near an area they already spend time in.

6. Set a budget.

The budget for a surprise party varies depending on guest count, location, level of formality, and much more. But there are always ways to trim the costs a bit. Here are a few options to consider:

  • Limit your refreshments to BYOB.
  • Serve light snacks instead of meals.
  • Use one main decor focal point instead of decorating every inch of the space.

Surprise parties don’t have many additional costs compared to a regular party. In fact, most surprise parties maintain that important element of surprise by using venues that aren’t too out of the ordinary. Think: a neighbor’s backyard or a public park.

7. Choose a date and time.

Follow the traditional dates and time of day used for that party type. For example, weddings typically take place during the afternoon, so a surprise wedding party should do the same.

Pro tip: If you’re choosing a date and time for a surprise birthday party, go with an option that takes place before their actual date of birth to maximize the chances they’ll be truly surprised. One to three weeks before their actual birthday will do the trick.

8. Book a location.

The best locations for a surprise party are:

  • Somewhere the guest of honor won’t accidentally go while setup is happening.
  • Near a location they frequent, such as a restaurant district or a friend’s house so that you don’t tip them off by breaking their expected routine.
  • Easy to sneak people into with multiple parking options spread apart, plus entrances and exits on different sides of the building.

9. Create a floor plan.

Use 3D event diagramming software and tools to figure out where you’ll hide people and supplies, place tables and chairs, and much more. You can also share your plans with your guests and designate entrances and exits for individual groups. Less is more when it comes to decorations ” create one large focal point the guest of honor will see when they walk into the main party room, and plan tables and chairs around that.

10. Design and purchase decorations.

The point of a surprise party is the surprise, and if there are too many decorations around, your guest of honor will be tipped off before they even see all of the guests.  A banner, some streamers, and a balloon or two will be more than enough.  If you’re going to order custom balloon colors or a special sign, plan this at least two weeks in advance in case of delivery delays.

11. Decide on activities to include.

Add some relaxed activities to your surprise party plan to take the heat off of the guest of honor so they can mix and mingle. Board games, poker, and a DIY cupcake bar area all great choices, but it will of course vary depending on the type of surprise party. Brainstorm what makes the most sense for the guest of honor and all of the attendees and go from there. Did you and the guest of honor frequent the pool hall in college? Consider choosing a venue with pool tables. Is the guest of honor your boss who loves darts? Set up a few dart boards throughout the location. The options are endless ” this is where creativity is incredibly important!

12. Create a menu.

Once again, this step will depend on the type of surprise party. Food isn’t always a requirement, but most hosts like to at least bring a birthday cake and cupcakes if it’s a surprise birthday party. If you choose to create a menu for a full meal, go with something you know the host will love. Save on setup and cleanup time, plus help keep the secret under wraps for as long as possible, by ordering takeout or delivery set for after the guest of honor arrives.

13. Send invitations.

Digital invitations are the most discreet and easiest to hide. Paperless Post and Evite offer free customizable designs plus RSVP features and guest updates. Send your invitations one month to two weeks ahead of time and collect RSVPs a week in advance.

Make sure you clearly communicate the fact that this is a surprise party by adding surprise party to the evite subject line and the main header of the message. Include parking and entrance instructions for those who want to jump out and surprise the guests. And for those who will arrive later, ask them to hold off until 15 minutes after the planned guest of honor arrival time so they don’t walk in during the surprise. This is another time that having some sort of communication tool or app will come in handy. You don’t want to be unable to communicate with guests if something goes awry (i.e. the guest of honor is running late) at the last minute.

14. Iron out the decoy plan.

To surprise the guest of honor on the day of the party, create a decoy plan. A decoy plan is what the guest of honor thinks they’re on their way to go do. The activity should require them to dress in a way that will be appropriate for the surprise party so that they’re not caught over/underdressed and embarrassed about their outfit. You’ll need a point person to create the decoy plan with them, arrange transportation, and time everything out.

15. Prepare food and drinks.

If the party is catered, share the floor plan you made with your chef and finalize arrival times for party staff.  If you’re bringing your own refreshments, purchase shelf or fridge stable items 3 to 5 days in advance. Order any baked goods for the day before or morning of.

16. Make a playlist.

Use Spotify or another similar music app to come up with a playlist of relaxed beats, classic jazz, or top 40 hits the guest of honor will love to set the tone for the party. The faster, more intense the music, the more of a party vibe you’ll get. The slower, more casual the music, the more of a laid back vibe you’ll get. More relaxed music fits the tone of most surprise parties, so if you’re not sure which to do, default to this option. You can always mix it up, too. What makes sense during the surprise portion of the party might not make sense later on in the night.

17. Outline the reveal.

Ask yourself these important questions to plan the big reveal:

  • Do you want everyone to wait standing in the dark then flick the lights on?
  • Do you want attendees to pop up/out from behind furniture?

If you do a virtual surprise party, ask everyone to leave their meeting IDs blank or change it to an appropriate party greeting. Have them turn their cameras off. Then invite the guest of honor to the meeting or, if you’re physically present, enter the meeting for them ahead of time, turn the microphone on so people can hear you coming, and open the screen for the guest of honor to see everyone.

For in-person surprises, you may also want a professional photographer to capture the moment. Or add some fun party props like cardboard glasses, streamer headbands, and glow-in-the-dark jewelry.

Quick tips for common types of surprise parties:

Plan your surprise party with these key ideas in mind to pull off any celebration.

  • Change all your backgrounds to photos of, or with, the guest of honor.
  • Use brightly-colored props like wigs, birthday candles, and balloons to make the call more like a party and less like a work meeting.
  • Trade the tired we forgot your birthday cover up for solid alibis that explain why you won’t be able to celebrate this year to make the surprise work without hurting anyone’s feelings.
  • Let guests know their presence is the gift and that additional items are optional.
  • Consider telling your parents so they have time to emotionally and physically prepare, but don’t tell anyone else.
  • Pretend you’re throwing a party with a strict time and dress code to keep it a surprise.
  • Choose a venue nearby the proposal spot to make the surprise dinner more convenient.
  • To truly surprise them, don’t go to an unusual location – stick to your favorite date night places instead.
  • Prepare your home ahead of time with their favorite foods, entertainment, and supplies.
  • Consider limiting your guest list since the event will likely be emotionally and socially positive, but also draining.
  • Go against tradition and forego limiting the guest list to women, only to throw off the guest of honor.
  • Pick a venue where you can easily display and open gifts since they might be large (think cribs and strollers).
  • Ask everyone to sign a card, memory book, or photo album with their name and well-wishes for the perfect sentimental gift.
  • Don’t throw the party within three days of their move since they’ll likely be stressed over last-minute packing.

Frequently asked questions about surprise parties:

Organize a simple surprise party by choosing a location, date, and time. Then secretly invite guests and trick the guest of honor into showing up.

It can take as little as one week to plan a surprise party or as long as six months. The timeline of surprise party planning is determined by the guest list size (groups of 25 or less are quicker to plan for than groups of 250+) and event type (i.e. a birthday is less complex than a wedding, etc.).

As a general rule of thumb, you should start to plan a surprise party at least three weeks in advance. Give yourself one week to prepare, another week to give guests an opportunity to clear their schedule, and a final week to collect RSVPs and make last minute arrangements.

You can plan a cheap surprise party by choosing a free location, doing BYOB, and limiting (or eliminating) decor.

Throwing a surprise party seems simple, but great surprise parties need a little planning. Organize a few basic details about the kind of birthday party you want to throw and consider what the guest of honor would enjoy. Once you've made the party details, keep the party a secret while giving the guests enough information. To get the honoree to the party, offer the chaperone a few ideas on how to get them to the surprise without letting the secret slip.

Organizing the Basics

Step 1 Select a party theme.

  • Keep in mind that you'll also need to plan food, decorations, and activities around the theme. So if you're throwing a luau-themed party, try to throw the party at the beach or set up tropical decorations. Serve tiki drinks and set out leis for the guests.

Step 2 Choose the party location.

  • For example, you can have the party at the honoree's house, at your place, at a restaurant, at a park, or anywhere you think your guest of honor wouldn't expect.
  • If you'll be renting a space, learn about what sound systems are available and ask about their policies on food and decor.

Step 3 Pick a date and time for the party.

  • Consider asking the honoree if they want to get together to hang out at the time you're thinking of planning the party. If they tell you they have other plans, you'll need to reschedule the party.
  • Avoid throwing the surprise party after the person's actual birthday or they might think you forgot their big day.

Step 4 Decide what refreshments to serve.

  • Match the foods to the time of the party. For example, if you're having the surprise birthday party right after work on a weekday, most guests will expect a meal. But if the party is in the afternoon on a weekend, you could serve drinks and appetizers.

Step 5 Make a guest list.

  • You might want to ask another person to help you plan and pull off the surprise, especially if they're really excited by the idea of the party.

Step 6 Invite the guests.

  • Decide if you want to ask guests to bring gifts or help with food and drinks.

Keeping the Party a Surprise

Step 1 Decorate for the party at the honoree's place.

  • If you won't have much time to decorate, stick to decorating the main party room first and then you can decorate other rooms as you have time.

Step 2 Decorate for a party at another space.

  • Ask a few of the guests to help you set up decorations before the other guests arrive.

Step 3 Give the guests party details.

  • Avoid giving out party details to too many people or to those who aren't coming to the party. This increases the risk that the honoree will find out about the surprise.

Step 4 Choose a chaperone for the honoree.

  • Tell the chaperone that you may contact them if you need them to stall for more time or get the honoree to the party right away.

Step 5 Plan a fake event to throw off the guest of honor.

  • If you're planning the surprise party at home, have the chaperone take the honoree shopping, to a movie, or on a hike. They should do something fun so the honoree doesn't want to go home early.
  • Ensure that the honoree will be dressed appropriately for the surprise party. For example, if the party will be fancy dress, the honoree should be dressed for a similar activity so they're in fancy dress too.

Step 6 Go through a to-do checklist before the party starts.

  • For example, ask one person to be in charge of turning on the lights and music when the honoree enters. You can also ask guests to be lookouts for when the honoree shows.

Step 7 Tell guests what you want them to do when it's time for the surprise.

Getting the Guest of Honor to the Party

Step 1 Ask the honoree to help plan a surprise party for someone else.

  • For example, if the party is at your house, decorate the main rooms and ask the honoree to meet you near the back of your house. When you're ready, you can lead them into the party room.

Step 2 Make up an excuse if the honoree comes.

  • This tactic will only work if the party is at your house or the honoree's house.

Step 3 Ask the honoree to go with you on an errand.

  • For example, you could be out for coffee together. After a little while, say, "A few days ago I left my jacket at the restaurant down the street. Do you mind if we swing by and I can grab it?"

Step 4 Give a heads up.

  • Advance notice is especially important if you'll be dropping balloons, throwing confetti, or exploding glitter. You don't want to waste the surprise on just another guest instead of the honoree.

To plan a surprise party for someone, start by choosing a location, like your house, their house, or a restaurant. To get your honoree to the event, have a trusted chaperone, like their spouse or friend, distract them by taking them on a fun outing while you get set up. Then have the chaperone make up an excuse to get the person to the event, like they forgot something and need to swing by their house or they'd like to go out to dinner. Have the chaperone text you when they are on their way to the party so everyone can hide and surprise the person you are celebrating. For something more timeless, Classic Sailing offers beginners the chance to learn to sail on a traditional two masted yawl. This Devon-based sailing school specialises in training for tall ships and wooden boats, offering a charming alternative to learning on an ordinary boat. This is a wonderful way to sail on Britain’s south coast, whilst also equipping you with the skills you need to sail a modern yacht.

The course takes place over six days, giving you the opportunity to have plenty of hands on experience with a traditional boat. During that time, you will explore the Devon and Cornwall coast, seeking out sheltered bays, sailing at night and mooring in rivers.

Cost : Prices start around £695 for both the RYA Competent Crew course and the RYA Day Skipper qualification. All meals are included in the price. Here's their website

Our instructor was very patient, had superior knowledge, never became excited when mistakes were made – just kept nudging us forward. The Fast Track to Performance Sailing course was what I hoped for. At first I wondered about some of the more esoteric racing and sail trim knowledge, but it all became clear later on.

Brian Engelking

best catamaran sailing school

The course was wonderful. It far exceeded our expectations, which were very high to begin with due to our first experience with Learn to Sail. Our instructor was very compassionate about our sailing experience, totally understood our comfort level and pushed us far beyond. He demanded that we trust the Colgate 26 and our own sailing abilities. Our desire at the beginning of the course was to increase our knowledge of sail controls and to gain greater confidence in stronger winds. Boy, did we learn! In short we were elated with the course. We were thirsty for more sailing knowledge, came away with a comprehensive understanding of boat balance, sail shape and chute flying. Our own 22 footer will sing with our new found knowledge!

Janet Holmes

“I’ve attended many courses in 37 years as a Navy pilot and airline pilot. The performance sailing course and particularly the Offshore instructor were outstanding.”

“A truly wonderful experience. The course exceeded our expectations. Our instructor was exceptional, so knowledgeable and yet patient. The provisions were great. We enjoyed the other passengers. We will never forget this special week, we had an absolute blast!”

Robert and Rebecca Clark

I could hardly put to words what I felt when I filled out the survey. Now days later I still can’t. I was nervous and excited, it was a flood of information, the 26 is intimidating to someone that just found out about sailing. There was a time when I just had to say “Hold on guys! Your telling me, one person can operate all this at one time?” As I looked at them with doubt Randon smiled and said sure. In seconds he tacked and adjusted the sails in a fluid motion. The way these guys treated me and communicate in multiple ways made this process work. This Learn to Sail class brought everything into perspective. I will be back. I felt like part of a sailing family. I walked away with a new perspective on life!

James Higdon

I thought it was fabulous. There should be a course for any person of any age who gets behind the wheel of a power boat. Had I not taken the course, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to be out there. It’s worth the value and I would do it again in a heartbeat. My instructor was fabulous!

Sharon Caprio

“You get a lot out of these courses because of the depth of experience of the instructors. My Coastal Navigation instructor had circumnavigated the globe in a round-the-world regatta. You can’t ask for more experience than that.”

“Anyone who is looking for a top-notch, unforgettable, hands-on experience should take an Offshore Sailing School course! Our instructors were Amazing!! They were incredibly patient, encouraging, knowledgeable, positive, helpful, professional and CALM! Best Catamaran Sailboats | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

December 28, 2023

The appeal of the catamaran sailboats in terms of speed , stability, and the ability to embark on long-range cruising has made them hugely popular with today's sailors. But what are the best catamaran sailboats?

Even though catamaran sailboats have become increasingly popular in the last few years, they have a truly rich legacy as one of the most sought after vessels for bluewater cruising.

Thanks to their incredibly wide beams and bigger daft, catamarans have become remarkably favorable for sailors looking to go for long-distance voyages, overnight cruising, and day sailing.

And if space is paramount for you when out there on the water, a catamaran sailboat is the only way to go as they offer extraordinary space to allow you to spend more time on the water with friends and family.

But even with all these amazing features, you're probably still wondering; what are the best catamaran sailboats?

Like their monohull counterparts, choosing the best catamaran sailboat can be quite overwhelming since there are lots of them out there. They come in a wide variety of designs and sizes ranging from small catamarans to huge ones.

The best catamaran sailboats can easily clock 250-mile voyages, offer incredible performance, and have layouts that can be easily optimized for individuals, charter markets, and great accommodation. In essence, the best catamaran sailboats offer respectable performance and offer good load-carrying ability.

That being said, here are some of the best catamaran sailboats that you can get your hands on.

Table of contents

Best Catamarans

{{boat-info="/boats/manta-42"}}

Even though many multihulls are no longer built in the United States these days, the Manta 42 is a true American-built catamaran that brings good living and good value into one package. Designed cleverly for easy handling, this American built catamaran is a great choice for a liveaboard cruiser for sailors looking to go for long-distance voyages. Thanks to its trademark high bows and an enormously curved incorporated forward crossbeam, this catamaran is easily recognizable even from a distance.

It is designed with a uniquely fixed crossbeam, which is very different from conventional aluminum cross beams that support the tension of the forestay. This fixed crossbeam allows for a little bit of movement thereby helping in absorbing enormous twisting forces of the bows. As such, you have to keep in mind that there may be resultant stress crack particularly in the bow area of the vessel.

All in all, the Manta 42 is a superb offshore cruising catamaran that offers a good sail-area-to-displacement ratio as well as plenty of space and accommodation. The cockpit area is refined, luxurious, and is designed with additional stainless pushpit contraptions to help in holding objects such as wind vanes, dinghies, and solar panels. The boat's quality in terms of performance and stability is the benchmark of what a catamaran should be.

Fountaine Pajot Elba 45

{{boat-info="/boats/fountaine-pajot-elba-45"}}

Recently named the "Boat of the Year" for 2019 by Cruising World Magazine and Sail Magazine, the Elba 45 is the latest model in the incredible line of Fountaine Pajot catamarans. This boat was designed to replace the outgoing Helia 44 and stands to be one of the most popular catamarans with Fountain Pajot having sold over 100 Elba 45 hulls long before even the first one emerged from production.

This French-built cat brings to the fore a well-thought-out, safe, and dependable features with 10% less drag, efficient motoring, top-notch performance, and high speeds. It's also designed with fixed stub keels and slightly aft-raked bows, which are all essential in enhancing windward performance; something that most catamarans struggle with.

To improve on safety, the keels of this amazing catamaran sailboat are glued into a particularly designed recess in the hulls. This is to ensure that there are no keel bolts that can rip out and put the boat in danger if the boat gets grounded or in the event of a collision. The rig is also ICW friendly and is a true representation of a standard catamaran setup.

This is, without a doubt, a modern-looking cruising catamaran that has a low-profile lounging space on its deck, high topsides and bows as well as a more pronounced reverse sheer that's essential in minimizing the bulk of the windows while creating additional and useful volume below. This is a true catamaran that occupies a sweet spot for those looking to sail along the bay or for those adventurous sailors looking to set sail for more ambitious offshore cruising plans.

{{boat-info="/boats/leopard-48"}}

With its fine design, straightforward systems, and easy handling, the Leopard 48 has everything it needs to be ranked among the distinguished category of the best catamaran sailboats. This is an excellent multihull that is structured with advanced materials, designs, and innovations that are meant to be fun, spacious, and comfortable.

Designed in South Africa by Simonis-Voogd, is probably the best design in the Leopard family of catamarans. Its two hulls are vacuum-bagged using balsa core to offer maximum firmness while ensuring that the weight is on the minimum. This is done by articulately regulating the level of resin in the layup. With such types of hull shapes, this catamaran sailboat is very fast and can consistently clock 12 knots of speed against the currents.

The boat is also designed with shallow keels as they're filled with closed-cell polyurethane foam that's of great importance in increasing buoyancy and preventing water ingress. To enhance the safety of the vessel, the stern and bow both have bulkheads that are essential in keeping out that water if the sailboat is involved in a collision.

The hulls of this boat are deep and narrow, particularly below the waterline. They also curve higher up to practically reduce the wetted surface area while offering enough deck space and plenty of room for accommodations. Its cockpit is another excellent feature thanks to its lavish spaces that give you the chance of kicking back and relaxing.

This boat is designed to offer superior livability, quick and easy to handle features, as well as enough space for friends and family. It is designed with beautiful lines and immense practicality for those who want to go on long cruising voyages.

While many people often believe that voluminous cruising catamarans should be used as charter boats, the Antares 44i brings a very different perspective altogether. Designed in Argentina as a complete bluewater catamaran, this is a boat that's specifically built for private boat owners looking for a sturdy and well-equipped bluewater cruiser. This is an absolutely gorgeous catamaran that has a fully-equipped cockpit just to ensure that you can safely operate it even when shorthanded.

Like most catamarans, the Antares 44i is designed with features that allow for long-distance voyages. It comes with a minimum bridge deck clearance of 30 inches, which is essential in mitigating bridge deck slap. The helm station is designed to offer excellent visibility over the coach roof without having to perch the helmsman high above the cockpit.

If you're planning to make those long-distance cruising to exotic places, you'll appreciate this boat's layout. The galley is put down in the port hull so that it doesn't compromise the size of the galley and the saloon. The forward-facing navigation station is up there with the best and is up to offshore standards. And that's not all; the Antares 44i comes with good mounting points for electronics, a large table, comfortable seats, and provides brilliant visibility outside.

This boat is perfectly suited for extended offshore cruising and is a great reminder for anyone who thinks that all catamarans are charter boats and all offshore boats are monohulls.

{{boat-info="/boats/dolphin-ocema-42"}}

Designed by Philipe Pouvreau in northern Brazil, the Dolphin Ocema 42 is a truly unique catamaran sailboat that goes against the conventional norm of catamarans. It is equipped with daggerboards, which are essential in enabling it to point higher on the wind while reducing the wetted surface when running or anchoring in shallow surfaces. This, however, requires a higher level of expertise in sailing. This is because lifting the daggerboards higher up will expose the rudders while the daggerboards can also interfere with the hulls in the event that the vessel runs aground.

But even with that, the Dolphin 42 balances incredible performance and cruising comfort in a very compact package; something that is not very easy in bluewater cruising. That's why it's designed using a foam core to make it lightweight by reducing weight wherever possible. This vessel will most likely never let you down if you want to circumnavigate the bluewater on a high-performance boat that is safe and comfortable.

So if you've been looking for a real sailing catamaran that doubles up as a very comfortable liveaboard sailboat , look no further than the Dolphin 42.

{{boat-info="/boats/catana-50"}}

Regarded as the best built and most stylish cruising multihull, the Catana 50 is a very huge catamaran sailboat. Measuring about 50 feet long with a beam of about 26 feet, this is an amazing catamaran that will test your sailing skills as a single sailor or if you're planning to sail shorthanded.

This boat is designed with a rig that gives you the option of using either a screecher or a self-tending jib. This may seem complex since the sheets are led to winches near each wheel while all other controls lead to a centerline winch that's located in the cockpit. But even with that, this sailboat can be easily tacked once on the course.

This is a real performance-oriented catamaran with efficient hulls and rigs allowing for top speed. This vessel is also designed with a long waterline and a subtle underwater shape at the bow to help in increasing volume while minimizing wave drag. The stern platforms can help in stretching the waterline length while also providing easy access from a dock or a dinghy. The board trunks are also very strong and sturdy to protect the integrity of the hulls if a collision occurs.

In essence, this is a very modern catamaran that's designed to safely make long-distance passages with ease. It is subdued in terms of styling but this doesn't mean that it falls short as far as performance is concerned.

Atlantic 42

{{boat-info="/boats/atlantic-42"}}

Designed in 1993, the A42 has cultivated a legion of fiercely loyal fans thanks to its efficiency and aesthetic. This is the smallest of the Atlantic cruising catamaran line and is hugely popular with sailors thanks to its ease of handling, ocean-going capabilities, and superb use of space. From the forward cockpit, pilothouse to the sleeping cabins, and brilliant galleys everything about this cat is a true classic.

Unlike most catamarans, the Atlantic 42 is designed with a waist-high cockpit that's located forward of the pilothouse just behind the mast. It brings forth a solid construction thanks to the large metal girder-like bearers that run across the bulkheads. This helps the vessel in having the utmost strength, better air circulation under the engine, and a high level of flexibility as far as the size of the engine and its positioning is concerned.

Initially, the boat's style and its outlook were considered conservative but it soon became clear that it is built of high-quality materials and to last. The internal construction of the boat is impressive, to say the least. The exterior looks very beautiful and perhaps much more beautiful than most boats today. Its large aft cabin accommodation is a top drawer while the space separating en suite heads and shower compartments are considered a bonus.

{{boat-info="/boats/fountaine-pajot-bahia-46"}}

If you were to board the French-built Fountaine Pajot Bahia 46, you'll agree that the high-quality of workmanship, layout, and efficient use of space is quite exciting, to say the least. This cat remains very popular among sailors thanks to its easy handling features and incredible performance under the sails. Well, this may not come as a surprise to many of us given that the Fountain Pajot is known for building some of the most remarkable cruising catamarans out there that it can be quite overwhelming to narrow down to a single vessel, but the Bahia 46 simply stands out.

This vessel is designed with hulls that are broader than those of many other catamarans. It's also designed with centerboards and daggerboards that are meant to enhance its performance. These are essential in minimizing draft while ensuring reliability, generous bilge, and in helping to protect the rudders and propellers.

This boat is big enough to manage any type of serious offshore sailing. This is one of the best cruising catamarans for anyone looking for the right vessel for long-distance sailing. This vessel has a very more generous rig than most cruising catamarans, which is essential in enhancing its performance. The six-post Bimini is very strong and clean and can perfectly hold dinghies.

In terms of its look, the Bahia 36 is designed with gorgeous lines with the deck and hulls sculpted with lines that add a touch of elegance to the overall look of an already excellent catamaran sailboat.

Gemini 105MC

{{boat-info="/boats/gemini-105mc"}}

Whether you're looking for a comfortable catamaran vessel to take you for a weekend sailing trip or a long sabbatical vacation on the oceans, the Gemini 105MC is a very satisfactory liveaboard catamaran vessel that offers spacious accommodation, thoughtful design, and a stable cruising platform for anyone who wants to have some good time on the water.

Designed by the legendary Tony Smith, this is somewhat a sailing cottage. Like a land cottage, it is cozy, comfortable, and very safe. This is essentially a 35 feet catamaran that offers great value for any sailing looking for a reasonably-priced catamaran sailboat for the weekend or holiday cruising.

This boat is designed with incredibly slim hulls, which are teardrop-shaped with flat bottoms and smaller wetted surface area. This is to ensure that drag is minimized and to lead to more leeway under sail. Each of the boat's hull is designed with a kick-up centerboard is of great importance in enhancing the vessel's windward pointing capability. This boat also has its rudders raised to enable it to seamlessly cruise in shallow waters where most vessels would otherwise run aground.

The eccentric narrow beam, which measures about 40% of the boat's length, is very different from today's 50%. However, its low center helps in keeping its stable, upright, and of course, safe.

Lagoon 450 F

{{boat-info="/boats/lagoon-450-f"}}

If you're looking for a catamaran sailboat that offers prestige at its peak, look no further than the Lagoon 450. This cat is widely known for offering an all-around comfort without compromising its beauty, spaciousness, class, and elegance. This is an elaborate French catamaran that brings to the table fantastic craftsmanship while leaving nothing to chance.

This is a very safe 45 feet catamaran that's not just comfortable but also very luxurious. The deck layout is centered on an amazing flybridge, which has been redesigned and redefined to offer both the traditional and modern outlook. You can very easily access the bridge, engine controls, steering station in a matter of seconds. As a result, this boat is efficiently designed to give you the ultimate control of almost every situation while on the water.

The spacious and luxurious interior of this boat is worth experiencing. The cabins and saloons are perfectly lit. We're talking about four to six cabins, eight to twelve berths, and up to four bathrooms. In essence, this boat can comfortably sleep eight to twelve people. This boat is designed to offer ultra-modern accommodations and amenities that come with little but amazing touches; all designed to make your life inside the catamaran enjoyable.

{{boat-info="/boats/gunboat-62"}}

An original performance catamaran cruiser from the iconic Gunboat manufacturer, the Gunboat 62 has truly cemented its place as one of the best catamaran sailboats to ever grace the oceans. Honestly speaking, this cat-inspired a whole range of other incredible boats including HH66 Catamaran and the Balance 526.

This is a boat that can perform admirably well in storms with a speed of over 35 knots despite being built using epoxy and E-glass with carbon-fiber structural components. It's designed with a distinct angular outline than most catamaran sailboats of its size and category. This is a vessel that was built for people looking to add more stuff and more gear for their voyages. In other words, you can have all the gear and equipment on this boat and still outperform a racing monohull of the same size.

Thanks to its lightweight feature, this vessel can sail upwind at speeds of over 17 knots and pinch up to 30 degrees. Just for comparison, the Gunboat 62 can tack through 95 degrees and still outperform the best racing monohulls. This boat is designed with a comfortable helm seat that offers 360-degree visibility as well as plenty of storage space, a functional working surface, and a luxurious cabin. Like many performance catamarans, the Gunboat 62 can attain about 20 knots if the conditions are right.

Privilege 615

{{boat-info="/boats/privilege-615"}}

Combining elegance, comfort, and style, the Privilege 615 is a lovely catamaran sailboat that seems to be always ready for a long offshore voyage. The roots of this incredible cat can be traced back to the 1980s when Philippe Jeantot opened up a boat-building company in France. As one of the best productions from the company, the privilege 615 sports a flybridge that comes complete with twin wheels, a sprawling sunbed, and other excellent features that will make your bluewater cruising a breeze.

Whether you want the charter version or a privately-owned version, the Privilege 615 is one of the most versatile catamaran sailboats. Step inside this vessel and you'll instantly notice the quality of the wood finish and the elegance of design. The advanced navigation station is not only ultra-modern but is perfectly stationed at a dedicated corner where you can control everything while still having a conversation with your friends and family.

This boat comes with multiple sleeping configurations to ensure that you and your guests can live aboard the boat for months on end. Although the boat appears like some sort of maze on the inside, you'll easily get used to it when you enter the forward section. That's not all; this boat has gorgeous lines that make the exterior beautiful just like the interior. Its sleek profile, incredible volume, and versatile interior make it one of the best catamaran sailboats out there.

There you have it; these are the best catamaran sailboats out there. It doesn't matter the one you choose, these cats will make your day out on the water and will serve you just right for your offshore voyages or for day sailing along the bays.

We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

Surprise parties are a thrilling and fun time for everyone involved. The rush of planning a surprise party has so many elements since you are constantly tiptoeing around the person it is for, and making sure everyone keeps it a secret. When you pull off the perfect surprise party, the feelings of accomplishment will enhance the celebration.

This is how to plan the perfect surprise party.

1. Plan for the Guest of Honor

When you plan the party for the guest of honor, it makes the surprise even better. It is important to make sure you base it on their personalized likes and that they enjoy being the center of attention when considering a surprise party. More introverted people may give you a different reaction than you expect from the party.

Keep some things in mind as you start the planning process.

Number of guests. Depending on the kind of party you are going for. Figure out if it is going to be a small gathering or a larger one where you extend the invite to coworkers and acquaintances. The number of people you invite impacts the location, budget, food and entertainment.

Budget. The cost will vary depending on if you get a venue, how many people are coming, food, gifts and more. You should set all of your decisions based on your budget .

Theme and Activities. This is where your relationship and knowledge with the guest of honor come into play. Think about their interests and hobbies, or if they would enjoy a formal dressy or a more casual event. It will look different for everyone.

There is a lot to take on when you are planning a surprise party. You might want to ask for someone to help you with all the details. Teamwork is a great skill to have when planning an event like this. It is hard to juggle everything independently, so taking responsibility for some tasks and collaborating with others can make the planner go smoothly. Stay in touch with people so that you communicate consistently on important details to make the day successful.

2. Set a Date

It might seem like common sense to set the party on their birthday, but you may want to reconsider a different day to improve the surprise. It is best to choose a date before or after their birthday.

You will want to consider the guest of honors best day and what seems to be working best for guests. See what day works best for friends and family members who should be at the event. You should also find a sneaky way to make sure the guest of honor will be available on the day the part is planned. Try asking people close to them if they have plans for that day or you or a mutual friend could ask to do something with them so nothing gets in the way.

Setting a date for this event takes extreme time management skills . You will need to be able to plan and organize the perfect date to ensure that most guests and your guest of honor can attend. It is most important to ensure that the guest of honor can go but you will want to make sure most of their loved ones will be able to attend as well.

This can be difficult since you will need to reach out to many people while prioritizing the schedule of the main guest. If you work well in stressful situations like this, you should be able to come up with a date after some work.

3. Inviting the Guests

You can invite everyone to the party when you decide on a date and location. You can send printed invitations or make secret group messages on social media to do your best to hide them from the guest of honor.

When sending out the invitations, ensure you include everything necessary for people to get there successfully. First, you will want to clarify that it is a surprise and should be kept secret at all costs. Then put down the date, time, location, RSVP and instructions for how everything will work out.

You might have to dig to find all the guests you need to invite. This will require you to have interpersonal skills for reaching out to people you might not normally talk to and finding connections to invite the necessary people. Relying on teamwork to network through everyone will help get the word out to everyone. Some skills you will need to have is patience and flexibility when waiting to hear back from everyone and making arrangements for people that might have conflicting schedules.

The RSVP is crucial since it gives you an accurate count for food, drinks and activities. In the invitation or after receiving the number of people coming, provide additional information about themes, dress code, gifts, where to park and anything else necessary.

4. Food, Drinks and Activities

Planning a menu will help you stay organized and plan ahead. You will want to choose recipes with minimal ingredients so it requires less prepping and reduces the chance of disasters. If you aren’t looking to have all the food prep on you, try to plan catering or ask your guests to bring dishes with them. This will take a lot of planning to ensure everyone brings the right foods or you order enough if you are catering. You wouldn’t want everyone to show up with desserts or run out of food for your guests.

It is also essential to have party decorations to match your theme. Typically you will want to spend the least amount of money on decorations, especially if you are in a small space for the party. Include the classics like balloons, banners or something unique and personalized like a cake. Remember to have everything you need when planning your activities. Whether it is games or crafts, be prepared with each element involved.

5. Getting Your Guest of Honor There

Now that the day has arrived, it is time to get them to the party. You should ensure you give your guest plenty of time to arrive before you two head out the door. Plan to get there at least 30 minutes to an hour before your guests are due to arrive.

You or a friend can make plans with them for the day of the party, so there is a reason to be together. Ideally, you will want a friend to do it since you want to already be at the location. Be sure that whatever this friend tells them they are doing matches the theme or dress code of the party.

If you are working with other friends to arrive smoothly, make sure the back story is clear. Your time management and communication skills will come back into play here. Talk to everyone who helped put together the party and ensure everything is going to plan. To make a perfect surprise, have all the stories straight and a plan to get them there at the right moment. You wouldn’t want a messy cover story to ruin the surprise.

Enjoy the Surprise Party

When everything is done, it is your time to sit back and relax while enjoying the party. All the hard work and dedication will pay off after seeing how happy the guest of honor is at the party. Follow these steps to make sure everything is planned accordingly and successfully.

How to Plan a Surprise Birthday Party

Figuring out how to plan a surprise birthday party is not hard, but does take some additional planning beyond a typical birthday party. With the covert nature of this party, take special steps to avoid the surprise from becoming a letdown for everyone involved.

Welcome Surprise - or Not

The very first step in planning a surprise party is to determine whether the party is one that the guest of honor will appreciate or dread. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of planning the party and forget to figure out whether it is the type of party that the birthday boy/girl will enjoy. For example, sociable college students might find a 21st surprise birthday party exciting, while others who are introverted may be mortified at the thought.

A surprise party is a good idea if the birthday boy/girl exhibits some of these traits:

  • Outgoing personality
  • Mentioned surprise party in a positive light previously

Skip a surprise party if the potential guest of honor exhibits these traits:

  • Shy personality
  • Embarrassed easily
  • Does not like a fuss
  • Previously mentioned not wanting a party or not liking the idea of surprise parties

Steps for How to Plan a Surprise Birthday Party

Keep yourself organized for the surprise by keeping a party planning checklist or outline. Include all the pertinent information in this list, including contact names and numbers. Use the steps provided below for making how to plan a surprise birthday party easy.

Pre-Party Steps

Most of the planning takes place well in advance of the actual party day. Follow these steps to plan the party:

  • Set a date - Casually ask friends and family members about the actual birthday date and the days surrounding the birthday date. Only mention the surprise party idea to a few trusted people who will not mention it-the longer the information is known and the more people who know it, the more likely it is that someone will let it slip.
  • Consider co-conspirators - Asking others to help cuts down on the amount of work you are obligated to do for the party, but also opens up the risk for outing the surprise. Ask just a couple people to help with planning or getting the birthday boy/girl to the party.
  • Create a story - The most important, and difficult, step of planning a surprise party is the creation of the story that will get the birthday boy/girl to attend the party without raising suspicions. Consider asking the guest of honor to a smaller soiree or create an alternate event to attend several days after the birthday day to keep suspicions to a minimum. Involve important family and even other friends if necessary, but only those who need to know.
  • Find a location - The party location for the surprise depends upon the story created for getting the celebrant to the party. For example, if you are planning a small dinner with close friends, use the restaurant's party room for a larger surprise party. Someone's home is another great idea, but think twice before using the guest of honor's home-after all, they may not appreciate everyone in their home without first cleaning it themselves.
  • Send invitations - Send guests surprise birthday party invitations several weeks before the event. Make sure that the surprise element is in large, bold lettering. In fact, mentioning the secret several times in your surprise invitation wording is a good way to emphasize the secretive part of the event. Remember to have everyone arrive 30 to 60 minutes before the guest of honor.
  • Gather decorations - Pick up birthday party supplies that are festive and fun. Just because it is a surprise party doesn't mean you cannot add another party theme, such as a luau or even a walk through time theme.
  • Plan the menu - Decide whether to host a party menu yourself with homemade foods, a caterer, or a mix of purchased foods and homemade dishes. Do not forget to include both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages on your shopping list.

Surprise Party Day Steps

Once the party day arrives, it is important that everyone knows what he or she is doing and when to do it. Double-check your timeline with those who are getting the guest of honor to the party. Arrive at the party location to decorate about an hour before guests arrive and have the food ready 15 minutes before guests show up. Watch for the arrival of the birthday boy/girl and then shout "surprise" with the rest of the guests when he/she walks through the door.

Additional Location Ideas

Picking the right location is a big aspect to planning this kind of party. Consider these places if you are having trouble coming up with ideas:

  • Bowling alley - Invite the birthday boy or girl to go bowling, or if you have a regular bowling day, consider having the party then and there.
  • Museum - If the birthday person is an art or history lover, consider holding the party at a local museum and inviting them to see an exhibit or collection.
  • Football field - Draw the birthday boy or girl to the field by offering to throw the ball around, but surprise them instead with a gathering of all their friends and family. Get permission from the school or area recreation board prior to planning a party on the field.
  • Campgrounds - Campgrounds are a great place to have a surprise party because the host can arrive early (even the night before) to set-up. The birthday boy or girl may think that they are going on a simple camping trip, but will be surprised when they see their friends gathered. If an overnight location isn't available, most campgrounds have shelter houses and buildings you can rent that are near playgrounds and rec areas.
  • Hotel room - If the party is for your significant other, make them think that they are going to spend a romantic night together, but surprise them with a party! Then, after the party, resume your romantic plans. Be sure you rent a suite so everyone can mingle comfortably.
  • Swimming pool - Instead of a simple day of swimming at the pool, surprise someone with a fun, pool party. Be sure bring anything the birthday person would need to feel presentable for photos after the swimming ends (make-up, hair brush).
  • Limousine - A limousine is one of the best places to hold a surprise party. Have the limo pick up guests before picking-up the guest of honor. Pull up to surprise the guest of honor who will be even more surprised when they step into the vehicle to see their friends inside. Have the driver take the celebrant on a tour of his/her favorite places or even childhood memories!
  • Sportsplex - Head to your local sports center for ice skating, basketball or soccer and invite the birthday boy or girl to go with you. Invite friends and family to meet you there. The beauty of this type of location is that you will automatically have entertainment options for your guests.
  • Office conference room - Surprising a co-worker? Book the conference room out for "meetings" and secretly decorate and hide guests.
  • Library - Many libraries have conference or meeting rooms that can be reserved by phone or online. Tell the birthday boy or girl you need to return some books or have to do some quick research in order to get them into the building for their big surprise!

Keep the Surprises Coming

Don't let the fun end with the initial "SURPRISE!" Be sure to add other surprise elements into the party to keep the excitement going throughout the day or night.

  • Video slideshow - Create a video slideshow including short video clips from friends who couldn't make it to the festivities and photos of the guest of honor, all put together with a special song. Play the video as a surprise to the birthday boy or girl.
  • Surprise guest - Invite a long lost friend of distant family member as a special, surprise guest. This can end up expensive and not everyone can travel on short notice, so plan ahead.
  • Bucket list activity - If you know the guest of honor well enough, you may know of an activity that he or she has on their bucket list. Try to incorporate that into your surprise party. Birthday boy always wanted to sky dive? Host the party near the airport and arrange for him to go sky diving. Has the birthday girl been longing for France? Give her French lessons as a gift.
  • Performance - If you are a dancer, singer, or performer consider creating a special dance or writing a song for the honored guest and surprising them with a performance.
  • Epic gift - You may not be able to afford an epic gift for the guest of honor on your own, but consider asking guests to contribute money towards one large gift from everyone. Even that trip to the spa, the new gaming system, or the new car might be within reach if everyone goes together on the perfect gift.
  • Progressive party - Keep the surprises coming all night long by making your party progressive. Surprise the guest of honor at his or her favorite bar for cocktails with a few friends, then move onto a secret restaurant location for dinner with another group of friends. End the night at a third surprise location for cake with yet another group of pals.
  • Scavenger/treasure hunt - Send your loved-one on a scavenger hunt or treasure hunt that leads them to some of their favorite places and finally ends at the party venue where all the guests will have gathered for the big surprise.
  • Gift an hour - Keep the birthday boy or girl in suspense by presenting them with a gift every hour of their party. Start off small, with a small box of candy, and progressively increase the values of the gifts, ending with the most expensive or most sentimentally significant gift of all.
  • Costume party - Ask guests to come in a disguise, especially one that hides their face, so even after the big "SURPRISE!" moment, the birthday boy or girl will have the fun of determining the identity of the guests. This idea would work best around the fall of the year when guests have easy access to Halloween costumes. If costumes aren't a practical request, consider having guests hold masks of the birthday person's face in front of their own.

Surprise Party Troubleshooting

The biggest problem facing people who plan a surprise birthday party is that the guest of honor finds out the big surprise. If this happens, consider doing one of two things: ask the person to act surprised, or rework the party for another date to keep it a surprise. A back-up plan is an excellent idea for other elements of the party, too. For instance, have extra drinks and easy fast party foods in case you run out, and have a few CD players ready in case the entertainment does not work out.

The Ultimate Guide to Throwing a Surprise Birthday Party

November 28, 2022 by Karl Tessendorf

Welcome to party central! We’ve created a nifty checklist to help you figure out how to plan a surprise birthday party . On paper, a surprise party seems like a crazy undertaking. It takes weeks of careful planning and juggling to get all the cogs of the party wheel lined up just right. It relies on perfect timing and utter secrecy that might give you gray hairs, but the payoff is worth every single one. It’s all about that moment when they walk in, and their jaw hits the floor. They stare in confusion and tilt their head like a puppy trying to figure out how another puppy got into its water bowl. And then the realization hits, they’ve been set up (and the crowd goes wild!) There’s nothing quite like it and with our ‘ how to plan a surprise birthday party guide’ , you’ll knock it out of the park.

Step 1. Lock in the guest of honor and set the date

A woman planning dates in a calendar

Your surprise birthday party could be for your mom, dad, wife, husband, brother or siste r but if you don’t lock them down first, your party will fizzle instead of sizzle. So, make sure you book time in their calendar at least a week in advance. You’re going to need a good excuse so think of something creative (but don’t go crazy).

If it’s your spouse, then a date day or night is always a solid option. If it’s a friend or sibling, then tell them you need help moving something, or you need a lift somewhere. You know your spouse, friends, or family best, so tailor your story to fit your situation so it feels natural. Don’t tell them you need help rescuing a dolphin from an Aquarium unless you really work at one. Otherwise, they’re going to smell something fishy. Keep the story low-key and mundane. Something you’d rather not be doing but you can’t do without their help.

Once you’ve got the date and time set, you can let the potential guest list know. Even if the invite is not ready yet, it’s good to provisionally send out the date so guests can plan accordingly. Once the invite is ready, send it out as soon as possible.

Step 2. Assemble a team

Whether you’re planning a surprise 18 th , 21 st , 30 th or 50 th birthday party , it’s not a one-person job. To pull off the best surprise of the decade, you’re going to need an elite team of secret agents. We’re talking about a reliable and stealthy team with a very particular set of surprise party skills. You probably already have a few options in mind, but make sure they are up to the task. It’s always good to have a few backup team members just in case anything goes wrong.

Once you’ve got your team assembled, delegate responsibilities and make sure each member knows exactly what they need to do. For ease of execution, break the party down into segments like: venue, food, drinks, décor, and transportation. Start a group chat on your phone app and keep the flow of information in one place for easy reference.

Step 3. Choose a theme

A colourful pinata

You don’t really need a surprise birthday party theme, but it makes everything easier to plan and we highly recommend one. When choosing a theme, the most important thing to consider is what your guest of honor likes. If they’re lactose intolerant, then a Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory Experience might not be the best idea.

The easiest solution is to make a list of the top three things they like. See which options lend themselves well to a party theme . Also opt for a theme that will give you the most wiggle room for venue choice, food, and dress-up ideas.

Another route is to let the venue dictate the theme. If your venue is a Mexican restaurant, then go for a Mexican party theme . Ask the bartender to mix up a few great Mexican cocktails and get the fiesta feels flowing.

Step 4. Set a budget

There’s one thing that’s more important than a guide on how to plan a surprise birthday party, and it starts with a ‘b’ and ends with ‘udget’. That’s right the success of your surprise party lives and dies by the budget so make sure you’ve got one to work with. The budget will dictate whether you’re brunching at a wine farm or picnicking in the park. Not to say that one is better than the other, but you get the idea.

If you’ve got a grand plan, then a great way to cover it is to crowd-fund it. Once you’ve worked out a general cost for the event, you can divide it up by the number of guests. Tell each guest that rather than trying to find a last-minute gift, they can contribute a small amount to the surprise party. An awesome memory of the best surprise party ever will mean more than any pair of socks or coffee mug ever would.

Step 5. Organize a guest list and invitations

The guest list should be straightforward (unless you’re inviting guests from afar). Keep the list to friends, family, nearest and dearest. Make sure you confirm the number of guests with the venue to avoid any nasty surprises. As soon as you have your guest list worked out, send a preliminary text message encouraging guests to save the date. Make sure you tell the guests more than once that this is a surprise party. Any guest who blurts the secret to the birthday pumpkin will be the human piñata at the party.

Once you’ve piqued the curiosity of your guests, it’s time to create an invitation. There are so many free design tools available online these days, so let your creative spirit run wild. Keep it on theme and be simple but clear. Reiterate that this is a super-secret surprise party! If there are specific directions to the venue, then include them or provide a website with information.

As a final point of contact, create a temporary group chat on your phone app with all the guests. This will serve as a great channel of communication leading up to the event and on the day of the party. Lastly, make sure that the guests arrive at the venue at least 30 minutes before the guest of honor. This gives everyone enough time to grab a drink, settle in and wait for the show to start.

Step 6. Choose a venue

Outdoor picnic set up with lights

If you’re here to learn how to plan a surprise birthday party at home , go ahead and skip this section. If, however, you want to go all out and find a venue, keep reading.

As we discussed before, if you have a theme then let that dictate the venue. Get a list of two to three possible venue options then call each one and check for availability. The sooner you get the booking locked in, the better. The worst thing that you can do is leave the booking until the last minute, because you will be disappointed. We repeat, you will be disappointed.

Another thing to consider is if the party is family-friendly or is it a surprise birthday party for adults. If there are kids or older family members involved, then make sure the venue can accommodate them.

If you’re hosting the party at a family member or friend’s house, then make sure you leave plenty of time for décor and set up. Deploy your team to get the venue ready while you distract the guest of honor. The more organized you are, the less stressful the day will be.

Step 7. Plan a menu

Party food platters

The simplest way to plan your menu is to tailor it to the theme of the party. If you’ve got many guests, then opt for platters of finger food and snacks. Communal sharing always adds to the festivities. Plan your cocktails according to the theme or pick one as a signature cocktail of the party. Cocktail pitchers are always a great option because guests can help themselves.

If it’s a smaller party and you’re comfortable with a sit-down meal, then opt for that. If your venue is outdoors and there is a garden or lawn then consider a picnic-style brunch, lunch, or dinner. Always remember to budget, budget, budget, because food and drinks will be the main cost of the party. Lastly, make sure that you’re serving food and drinks that your guest of honor will love.

It’s not a party without a birthday cake add that to the surprise birthday planning list. We recommend ordering a cake from a good bakery for best results. Not having to worry about making cake is a huge stress reliever and trust us, things are going to get a little hectic no matter how organized you are. If you’re catering for a big crowd, then cupcakes or cake pops are a great idea. You can still have a small cake for the cutting ceremony, but it’s a lot easier to hand out cupcakes than it is to slice and serve 20 pieces of cake.

Step 8. Decide on a floor plan

Most venues that are used to hosting parties will give their suggestions for a good setup. Heed their advice but also consider the following things. Firstly, are there any grandparents joining that might need wheelchair access? Another thing to think about is if there will there be any children at the party. If so, then it’s a good idea to have a kid’s area set up, or to book a table that’s close (but not too close) to the kid’s play area.

Lastly, whatever kind of venue you hire or book, make sure that the table or party is not immediately visible from the parking lot. For maximum surprise factor, lead the guest of honor on a path that has a few twists and turns on the way to the party.

Step 9. Décor and playlist

A group of friends celebrating around a table

Great table décor is always impressive to look at and it sets the tone for the party. How over the top you decide to go is up to you but just remember to keep it on theme and classy. Put the person with the best sense of style on your team on décor duty and give them a budget to work with. Party shops are a great resource when looking for affordable décor options.

If you’re at a venue that lets you bring your own playlist, then go for it. Alternatively, if the venue allows for it, you could always hire a DJ or even a live band. A great budget-friendly solution is to book a venue that already has live music.

Step 10. Set up some activities

Party activities are always fun, but make sure they’re allowed at the venue before planning any. If the party is outdoors or on a lawn, then setting up a few simple games can be fun. Let your theme dictate the games. If it’s Mexican, go for a piñata, or if it’s a western theme, then hire a mechanical bull. A photo booth with props is always a great way for guests to make some birthday memories.

Step 11. Direct your guests

Once you’ve got your venue booked and your area planned out, it’s time to do an arrival dry run. You don’t need your guests at the venue for this, but you do need to know where they must be waiting. Time how long it takes to walk from the parking lot until the table is visible and make a note. When you arrive at the party on the day you can send an alert text to your teammate who will be inside.

Decide beforehand if you are going to shout the classic SURPRISE or if you’re going to do something different. Make sure you brief the guests so it’s a nice, clean, and unanimous shout instead of a mumble jumble. If any guests are running late, then see if there is an alternative entrance they can use. You don’t want to ruin the surprise at the last hurdle by having them arrive in the parking lot just as you do.

If the party is at a family or friend’s house, then advise guests to park one road away or use an Uber if possible. Nothing gives a surprise party away faster than 20 cars parked outside a house.

Step 12. Plan a decoy for the guest of honor

A couple looking at the engine of a broken down car

If you followed step 1 correctly then you’ve already booked time in the guest of honor’s diary. As far as they are concerned, they’re going on a date with their spouse, or they are helping a friend. If something goes wrong on the day, it’s always good to have a backup decoy. Helping a parent who’s got a flat tire or battery are always solid options.

<H2> Step 13. Prep on the big day

It’s SHOWTIME baby! Sure, your palms are sweaty, knees weak, and arms are heavy , but you’ve got Eminem blasting and you’ve got this in the bag. Yes, it’s going to be a little hectic, but you’ve got it all worked out because you followed this handy guide. Be sure to have a catch-up with your elite party team and make sure that everyone knows what they are responsible for.

Our top tip for the day is to pack a set of party clothes for the guest of honor if necessary. If they think you’re going on a date, then they’ll most likely be dressed for the occasion. But if your decoy was helping a friend move or fix a car then they’ll need something to change into. You want them to be dressed for the occasion and comfortable at their own party.

Step 14. Unveil the big surprise

Surprise party cake with sparklers

Send an alert text to your team as soon as you pull into the venue. Make sure that one of them is filming the event. Start your slow walk to the party and try not to cough up one of the thousand butterflies that are flapping around in your stomach. And just like that, SURPRISE!

Congrats, you’ve pulled off a surprise party for the ages. Before you know it, you’re going to have people asking you to plan their birthday parties . But for now, enjoy the day, take lots of pictures and give yourself a well-earned pat on the back. You earned it!

Parties are no doubt an integral part of the average undergraduate student. While I fall in this bracket, I am the undisputed champion of putting together awesome surprise parties of whatever kind, especially birthday parties. Preparing a surprise party can be exceptionally challenging especially considering that people are different, have different tastes and preferences, and are likely to react differently to different things (Espeland and Verdick 79). For a successful surprise party, the priorities of the individual to be surprised have to be pivotal as they are the primary determinants of whether the party will be a remarkable joyful event or an annoyance triggering provocation. This essay endeavors to explain the entire process of putting together an awe-inspiring surprise party for a friend. The first step in putting together a remarkable surprise party is to make sure the person to be surprised has absolutely no idea of the imminent plans. To successfully do this, the planner should ensure minimal contact with the individual. This is because a mere slip of the tongue could auction the hints to the person to be surprised. Secondly, the planner(s) should not speak to any of the person’s friends as they may be tempted to leak the information to them. The plan and all information relating to the plan should remain strictly within the confines of the planning group (Espeland and Verdick 87). That done, the planners should spend the time they spend with the individual to be surprised because a ‘mistake’ could happen. If it is a birthday party, the person planning it should schedule it for a day before the actual birthday. As a matter of fact, the most important thing is to think about the actual surprise. In so doing, the individuals planning the party should foremost consider the hobbies of their friend. It makes sense that the party should revolve around such hobbies and fun activities. If they like swimming, for instance, the party should revolve around swimming. Considering the hobbies of the person to be surprised is almost a rule. It should not be broken lest somebody be held answerable the following day. The second step in thinking about the core idea of the surprise party is to consider the likes and dislikes of the person (Espeland and Verdick 109). For instance, it is a matter of common knowledge that a surprise party should maximize the likes and minimize the dislikes. Consider a person that does not drink, for instance. It beats logic to plan a surprise party full of booze. If the person likes music and dance, the planner should get a good music system and audio visual gadgets such as big screens. After getting the hobbies and the likes sorted, get to analyze the personality of the individual to be surprised. This means that all friends in the planning circle should come together and give their views on how they understand the person. This is especially so because no one friend totally knows every bit of their comrade’s personality. Different friends know different things about the person. For this reason, they should gather the varied views. If the person is an introvert, do not invite noisy friends and especially drunks. Such are bound to irritate the person. On the contrary, if the person is an extreme extrovert the organizers of the party should consider inviting those people that are both social and sociable. This will add fun and make the person feel at ease. Timing is another crucial factor that a person organizing the party should consider. Speaking of timing, the choice of day is of the essence. What this means is that the people organizing the event should make the event the surprise it is supposed to be. This is to say that the organizer should go for a day that the person to be surprised least expects a party. While this is the case, a weekday, probably a Tuesday midmorning or afternoon should be a perfect time. The party should be set to take place at that time because, typically, not many people would anticipate a party on a Tuesday afternoon (Espeland and Verdick 114). Along with the timing, the planners should prepare the party away from the individual’s house, probably at a friend’s. It goes without saying that the foods and drinks should be chosen with the person’s preferences in mind. Foods and drinks are a core aspect of a surprise party. Therefore, the people preparing the party should prepare food carefully in such a manner that both the person being surprised and the guests like it. It is a matter of common knowledge that a party is even much better when the composition of guests consists of people from both sexes. A party can be dead boring if it is only dominated by either gender. For this reason, it is recommended that the inviting be done in a well calculated manner. This helps break potential monotony during the event. Espeland and Verdick think that a surprise party will always be a big success when the guests are people that the person does not expect (117). This adds a pleasant touch to the whole thing. The last step is the ultimate surprise. Pulling the ultimate surprise must be carefully calculated. After all is set, the planners should make sure all the invited guests have arrived. After that, one person, preferably the host should call the person to be surprised. In the call, the host should not hint that there is a party, but can instead tell the person that there is something urgent, probably related to some sad news that they need to discuss. This will ensure the person hurriedly arrives. Upon arrival, the guests around, and the host should open the door and shout, “surprise! Surprise! Surprise!” if the party was a birthday, they can start singing the conventional happy birthday song, then set the party rolling. This pro3ess is a guarantee of the most awe-inspiring surprise birthday.

Before diving into the details, here are some quick tips and facts to keep in mind while planning your party:

  • Plan ahead : Start planning your party at least a month in advance to ensure you have enough time to organize everything.
  • Budget wisely : Determine your budget early on and allocate funds for different aspects of the party, such as food, decorations, and entertainment.
  • Delegate tasks : Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Delegate tasks to friends or family members to lighten your workload and ensure everything gets done.
  • Consider dietary restrictions : Take into account any dietary restrictions or allergies your guests may have when planning the menu.
  • Have a backup plan : Prepare for unexpected situations by having a backup plan in case of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Planning a party has been a part of human culture for centuries. From ancient celebrations to modern-day gatherings, parties bring people together to celebrate special occasions, create lasting memories, and have a great time. Whether it’s a small intimate gathering or a large-scale event, the key to a successful party lies in careful planning and attention to detail.

One of the first steps in planning a party is choosing the right theme. The theme sets the tone for the entire event and helps guide your decisions regarding decorations, food, and activities. Here are some tips for choosing the perfect theme:

  • Consider the occasion : Tailor the theme to the occasion you’re celebrating. For example, a birthday party could have a specific theme like “Superheroes” or “Under the Sea.”
  • Think about your audience : Consider the preferences and interests of your guests. Choose a theme that will resonate with them and make the party more enjoyable.
  • Get creative : Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and come up with unique and original themes. This will make your party stand out and create a memorable experience for everyone.

Once you have chosen a theme, it’s time to create a guest list. The number of guests will depend on the type of party you’re planning and the capacity of the venue. Here are some tips for creating a guest list:

  • Consider the venue : Make sure the venue can accommodate the number of guests you plan to invite. Avoid overcrowding to ensure everyone has a comfortable experience.
  • Prioritize close friends and family : Start by inviting your closest friends and family members. Then, consider extending the invitation to other acquaintances or colleagues if space allows.
  • Send out save-the-date cards : If you’re planning a large event or a party that requires travel, consider sending out save-the-date cards well in advance to give your guests enough time to plan and RSVP.

Once you have finalized your guest list, it’s time to send out invitations. Invitations can be sent digitally or through traditional mail, depending on your preference and the formality of the event. Here are some tips for sending invitations:

  • Include all relevant details : Make sure to include the date, time, location, and any special instructions or requests in the invitation.
  • Request RSVP : Ask your guests to RSVP by a specific date so you can plan accordingly. Provide multiple ways for them to respond, such as email or phone.
  • Consider themed invitations : If you have chosen a specific theme for your party, consider designing invitations that reflect the theme. This will create excitement and anticipation among your guests.

The menu is an essential aspect of any party. It’s important to consider your guests’ preferences, dietary restrictions, and the overall theme of the event when planning the menu. Here are some tips for planning the perfect party menu:

  • Offer a variety of options : Include a mix of appetizers, main courses, side dishes, and desserts to cater to different tastes and dietary needs.
  • Consider hiring a caterer : If you’re hosting a large event or don’t have the time or expertise to prepare the food yourself, consider hiring a professional caterer. They can help you create a delicious and memorable menu.
  • Don’t forget about drinks : Provide a variety of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages to cater to all your guests. Consider creating a signature cocktail that matches the theme of your party.

Decorations play a crucial role in creating the right atmosphere for your party. They help set the mood, enhance the theme, and create a visually appealing space for your guests. Here are some tips for decorating your party venue:

  • Stick to the theme : Choose decorations that align with the theme of your party. Use colors, props, and signage that reflect the chosen theme.
  • Create focal points : Designate specific areas of the venue as focal points and decorate them accordingly. This could be a dessert table, a photo booth, or a dance floor.
  • Consider lighting : Lighting can greatly impact the ambiance of your party. Use a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create the desired atmosphere.

To keep your guests engaged and entertained throughout the party, it’s important to plan activities and entertainment. This will ensure that there are no dull moments and that everyone has a great time. Here are some ideas for organizing activities and entertainment:

  • Games and competitions : Plan interactive games and competitions that match the theme of your party. This could be a trivia game, a scavenger hunt, or a dance-off.
  • Live entertainment : Consider hiring live entertainment such as a band, a DJ, or a magician to keep your guests entertained. Make sure their performance aligns with the overall theme of the party.
  • Photo booth : Set up a photo booth with props and backdrops where your guests can take fun and memorable pictures. This will not only provide entertainment but also serve as a keepsake for your guests.

To ensure that everything runs smoothly on the day of the party, it’s important to create a party timeline. This will help you stay organized and ensure that all tasks are completed on time. Here are some tips for setting up a party timeline:

  • Work backward : Start by determining the time you want the party to end and then work backward to allocate time for each activity, such as food service, games, and entertainment.
  • Include setup and cleanup time : Don’t forget to allocate time for setting up the venue before the party starts and cleaning up afterward. This will help you stay on schedule and ensure a smooth transition between activities.
  • Delegate responsibilities : Assign specific tasks to trusted friends or family members to help you with setup, food service, and cleanup. This will help you manage your time more efficiently and enjoy the party without feeling overwhelmed.

How do you organize an event paragraph?

Organizing an event requires careful planning and attention to detail. Here are the key steps to organize an event:

  • Define the purpose and goals : Determine the purpose of the event and set clear goals and objectives.

Describe a surprise party that you organized for your friend

Describe a surprise party that you organized for your friend.

-what was the occasion, -where you organized it, -how you did it, and explain how you felt about it..

Well, I have attended a plethora of parties in my whole life such as a birthday party,  anniversary party and so on. But here I would like to talk about a surprise birthday party that I had arranged for my friend Saba. I explain it briefly.

Last year in the month of December, Saba’s birthday was on 5th December. She is my best friend but she belongs to a middle-class family. About two days before her birthday, she told me that she did not have enough money to celebrate her birthday. As a result, she felt gloomy. I wished that she should celebrate her birthday with great enthusiasm.

Then, I thought about the idea of organizing a surprise birthday party for Saba. I shared it with my mother and asked for help. She got ready to do. Actually,  I have been receiving my pocket money for 2000 rupees every month. I am used to saving some money from it because my mom said that it is a good thing to save money.  We can use it in our need.

I purchased decoration accessories for the decoration in Saba’s birthday party. On the day of Saba’s birthday, we both met at college but I had not wished her for her birthday. She was looking gloomy. Perhaps, she thought about my behavior which I did on that day. We together attended all the lectures and in the evening, she went to her house. I also came back to my home.

After then, In the evening, I had organized a birthday party for Saba on the roof of my home. My mom helped me. I  did decoration on the whole roof like a bridal with colorful balloons. Besides,  A chocolate cake was baked by my mother for Saba. I informed Saba’s mother about my plan and prohibited her to tell anything to Saba. She obeyed with me. Then, I called Saba via mobile phone. I said to her to come to my home quickly. When she came to my home, I opened the door and covered her eyes with a piece of cloth.

I took her on the roof of my home. My family and Saba’s mom were available there. I removed that piece of cloth from her eyes and all the persons who available in the party started clapping for Saba. She felt highly elated. She thanked me. Further, she cut the cake. I gave her a present, as well as other persons, gave different presents to her.

All in all, she thanked me again for such a beautiful party. When I saw my friend’s smile, then I felt myself on the ninth cloud by happiness.
