Being a successful officer would not be feasible without these qualities.

My Dream Job Essay

I have already taken and passed the required written tests to become a police officer. Additionally, I underwent physical examinations, which evaluated my stamina, vision, hearing, and agility. High school ROTC participation has aided my development of extra practice and discipline. After completing high school, I spent four to five months at a police academy honing my skills by performing criminal investigations and learning about my rights and local, state, and federal laws.

200 Words Essay On My Dream Job

My dream is to become a teacher. I've always wanted my life to make a difference. I cherish sharing my knowledge and instructing young people. Finally, I came to the realisation that it is my passion. Some people aspire to work as college professors or university instructors, but I would like to teach at a public school. I intend to devote the remainder of my life to teaching young children and students and I'm making a lot of effort to make my dream come true.

Reason I Chose Teaching

I picked teaching as my dream career for a variety of reasons. I enjoy teaching, which is why I started it first. I know that working as a teacher will allow me to lead a very dedicated life where I will be able to make a genuine difference in people’s lives. Another important factor is that I want to bring a change in our educational system. I wish to improve several problems in our educational system.

Although it won't be simple, that is what I want to achieve in life. To ensure that school is enjoyable for kids rather than a chore, I want to modify the existing system of teaching.

500 Words Essay On My Dream Job

A career that combines activity, talent or passion with a chance to make money is referred to as a dream job. A dream job could be in the performing arts, law, medicine, acting, or any other vocation. Having a dream job offers us the drive to take actions that will help us realise our goals.

A dream can inspire you to pursue your goals, as lacking motivation is akin to lacking the desire or inspiration to do so. Setting the correct path is the first step toward achieving your goals. If the appropriate objectives are defined, one can undoubtedly realise their ambition.

Setting a goal is similar to making a strategy for each step and taking it one at a time. The key to achieving success in life is to have a clear goal in mind. Even though sometimes, not all of your dreams may come true, you should continue to have plans and keep working on achieving them.

My Dream Job : Doctor

My childhood dream has always been to become a doctor. I know the suffering of those who live in poverty and sometimes pass away due to lack of access to expensive medical care. There is no more extraordinary service than providing healthcare to the sick and poor people who suffer greatly in the absence of modern healthcare facilities. After hearing and witnessing some unfortunate incidents of people losing their lives simply because of their financial status motivated me to choose the medical profession. I made the decision to go into medicine and help people.

I'm keenly interested in learning about subjects relating to the human body. I've always been fascinated by how doctors comprehend the illness and successfully treat patients. Biology is my all-time favourite subject. Even though pursuing a profession in medicine is not simple, I'll work tirelessly to finish my studies and acquire my dream position one day.

I intend to help the underprivileged residents of my community once I have earned my medical degree. Numerous fatal diseases affect the poor, and they are unable to pay for better care. I would schedule a few days every month to provide treatment for all the needy people for free or at a minimal fee in an effort to help them receive medical attention that they need and deserve.

The profession of a doctor has the greatest respect. My goal in life is to become a doctor so that I can help others who cannot afford expensive medical care. I would help many people and their families by becoming a doctor. The joy and inner calm that come from rescuing lives transcends all other emotions.

People claim that the only other being capable of miracles after God is a doctor. Being a doctor is a lifetime achievement. By providing patients with medical care and treatment, a doctor relieves other people's pain and suffering. People who practise medicine bring joy to a lot of patients and their families. Not only is becoming a doctor a fantastic job choice, but it also brings inner satisfaction and fulfilment.

Essays About Dream Jobs: 6 Essay Examples Plus Prompts

If you are writing essays about dream jobs, read our essay examples and topic ideas to give you some inspiration.

What are the typical dream jobs that our friends say when we are young? “I want to become a successful actor!” or “I want to be a doctor to help people!” It might be painful to hear these words more often than not, but dreams are just dreams. Some will surely make it, but some will not due to several factors.

We’ve encountered people who shared their stories of determination and perseverance to achieve their goals. Some individuals choose to stop pursuing their dream job for their family or personal reasons. The most heartbreaking ones are those who realize that their dream job is not how they imagined it.

If you are writing an essay about dream jobs, here are 5 essay examples to help you write an insightful piece.

1. The Secret To Happiness At Work by Arthur C. Brooks

2. 10 things i wish i knew before pursuing my dream job by erin sullivan, 3. can a dream job become a nightmare by daisy buchanan, 4. a moment that changed me: i lost my dream job – and found unexpected success by david barnett, 5. even with a dream job, you can be antiwork by farhad manjoo, 6. when you have to quit your dream job to pursue your dream by laura yan, 1. what is your dream job, 2. how to land your dream job, 3. challenges in landing your dream job, 4. what do you want to accomplish in your dream job, 5. social challenges when pursuing your dream job, 6. dream job vs. high-paying job.

“ They find this statistic surprising because, like so many of us, they generally assume that to be satisfied, you must hold your dream job—one where your skills meet your passions, you make good money, and you are excited to get to work each day. No way 89 percent of people have this, right? ”

In his piece published by The Atlantic, Brooks questioned the concept of equivalence between having your dream job and being happy at work. He finds that satisfaction in an occupation boils down to three things – a sense of accomplishment, recognition, and work-life balance. Check out these essays about dreams and sleep .

“ Passion and drive will never fully soften stress or worry. It’s still work, and as a result, it still feels like work. When you do what you love, you’ll work many days in your life– it’ll just be more enjoyable. ”

Professional photographer Erin Sullivan reminds us that having your dream job doesn’t mean that everything will be easy. It will still require an amount of work and dedication. Believe it or not, there will still be challenges you have to overcome to succeed.

“I was still depending on someone else – my manager – to validate me and grant me eternal happiness, just like that perfect grade had been supposed to. Eventually, I quit that coveted role, having recognised that even in our biggest and best dreams, we can feel powerless and unhappy.”

Daisy Buchanan shares two stories – one from personal experience and another from her friend, Lizzie – which relays how being passionate about your dream job can increase being exploited at the office. Thankfully, the essay has a happy ending for both of them, as they can venture out into different roads and find that dreams are about more than work.

“I was devastated, as if a partner I had devoted myself to for more than a quarter of a century had suddenly told me they didn’t love me any more. I felt a crashing sense of impostor syndrome. Had I been fooling myself all these years? Was I not as good as I thought? Had I finally been found out?”

For an award-winning journalist like Barnett, losing his dream job after 26 years in the industry felt like the world’s end. As an unemployed 45-year-old with bills to pay and a family to provide for, the future looked terrifying. However, he was still good at writing, and an opportunity to utilize that came knocking at his door, which gave him a shot to pursue his dream job once again.

“It’s just that I now have space in my mind for a truth that my pre-pandemic workaholism never allowed me to consider — that even a dream job is still a job, and in America’s relentless hustle culture, we have turned our jobs into prisons for our minds and souls. It’s time to break free.”

Written in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, this New York Times opinion essay by Manjoo tackled how the pandemic transformed the American workforce’s way of thinking when it comes to jobs. Suddenly, a new opportunity for workers to get better compensation is at hand, and they quickly realize that there’s more to life than toiling day and night at work.

“Anger wouldn’t work, but silence wouldn’t, either. I thought about what I always valued: being honest, true to myself, my values. Speaking up even when it was hard. I was a bold and ambitious journalist, but in this office, that part of me had gone silent. I couldn’t let it be silent anymore.”

Everything was going well for Yan. She got her dream job with great pay, which allowed her to get a nice residence in New York and buy furniture for the first time. Everything clicked until it didn’t. In this piece, Yan chronicled how her seemingly perfect career turned into a nightmare and how she managed to cope after leaving it all behind.

Essay Prompts About Dream Jobs

Here are some essay prompts about the topic that might assist you in composing your piece.

Essays About Dream Jobs: What is your dream job?

You might be the one who was able to pursue the career you’ve been aiming for your whole life or the one who held it off either because of personal priorities or several other factors. In your essay, share what you aspired to become when you were young and try to look back on when you realized it. Finally, discuss how it influenced your life as you grew older.

You’ve managed to land your dream job and want to share the things you’ve learned to the new or up-and-coming graduates. Share the actions you undertook to increase their chances of joining you in the field. Did you build your network by attending conferences and talks, or by excelling during your internship? Talk about the attributes they should be looking for in a company, and consequently, what information should they include in their resume if they plan to apply. You can also include how to negotiate for the right compensation. Create a step-by-step instruction in essay form.

There are many reasons for a person to consider not pursuing their dream job. Is it because of financial constraints? Is it because of social and environmental factors? Ask yourself why some people stray off course in pursuing their passion. Discuss these challenges and obstacles and put in your two cents on how they’ll be able to overcome it.

If you’re stuck picking an essay topic, check out our guide on how to write essays about depression .

You pursued your dream job because you wanted to achieve something in the field. For example, did you become a doctor to be the first to cure cancer, or perhaps a lawyer who wanted to champion the poor? Talk about your primary motivation in getting your dream job and trying to insert what the future of your industry holds.

Trace your steps from when you’ve decided to go for your dream job. Write an essay sharing how your parents took this information. Did they support you or receive pushback? Share what you felt the first time you took a step into college surrounded by colleagues with the same aspirations. Was the competition friendly or fierce? Additionally, try to weigh the efficacy of joining a study group or studying alone.

If there are any, go through the time when you encountered pressure from family or peers and share a lesson or two on how to control those moments of hesitation.

Consider writing an argumentative essay based on this dilemma. For example, try to talk to people who have chosen passion over money and vice-versa and dive into their level of contentment. Were they happy with the choice they made? Were there moments of regret, and would you have chosen differently? By the end, assess your situation and decide where you’ll stand if you were given this option.

Dream Job in Business and Retirement Scenario Essay

Importance of a dream job, my best retirement scenario, personal experience to help comprehend “what’s the matter with david”, works cited.

Young people should think about their futures before they choose their majors. I believe that I am fortunate to have chosen business as my main field of study. It helps to unite various ethical issues, leadership skills, and financial items. A successful leader has to think about many things at the same time. Self-regulation, empathy, and social skills are the competencies for a leader’s consideration (Goleman 78). It is not enough to know what job should be chosen. It is important to understand the worth of a dream job, develop a detailed plan to obtain it, find enough motivators, and be sure that the choices made promote personal happiness and satisfaction. (Colby et al. 51).

After graduation, I hope to succeed in the finance and gain the required portion of experience in the U.S. to come back home and join the family business started by my grandfather. I think that an investment bank or some private equity could be chosen to gain a better understanding of cultural principles, the peculiarities of the work in teams, and the concerns that could be developed between employees. Still, to be a part of a team and to work as a part of the already established business should not be defined as my final goal. These are simply the means to achieve the dream job. I want to be educated and experienced enough to establish a company. To be a leader of my own company connected with the family business is my dream job.

My motivation is based on my ability to weigh different people’s experiences and consider my personal dreams. The experience of Black Irving, CEO of GoDaddy Company, shows that people may have no ideas about their future careers (Bryant). Sometimes it is enough to work with good people and find it interesting to organize people in regards to a personal tone. Besides, I am motivated by such concepts as curiosity, love of learning, and using new ideas in routine affairs (Crossan et al. 287). In the UAE, many business people develop their projects on foreign experiences and knowledge. I want to be ready for the challenges and stay competitive. Therefore, I believe that my practice in the USA and my devotion to our traditions and recognition of family values should help me create a strong company with clearly identified ideas and goals.

The success of my future career is hard to predict. Still, it is always possible and even helpful to dream of effective leadership. Leadership is the process of guiding people and promoting the importance of changes in the workplace. Being a transformational leader is my goal. I would like to underline the importance of change and innovation in the UAE family business because I believe that this field could be improved considerably regarding the current experiences of different nations. In 40 or 50 years, I would like to listen to one of my followers giving a speech about my retirement and my personal contributions to the business’s development.

“This person has proved that it is necessary to have a dream. It is not enough to identify it and make people aware of this dream’s existence. It is more important to understand how to obtain the dream and make other people believe in it. From an early age, this person demonstrated a number of qualities that were inherent to true leaders. He decided to go to an American university and obtain a high level of knowledge. It was unnecessary to motivate him because he had enough strength and dreams to take all steps independently.

“His devotion to his family and intentions to make something useful for his country made him strong and goal-oriented. Though some people thought that the existing difference between American and Arab cultures could not result in something successful, this person showed that friendship between nations was possible. Relying on the experience of his grandfather as the main role model in business, this leader combined American persistence and Arab innovations and created a spirit that could inspire people and solve ethical dilemmas that remain common in the workplace. Ethical problems could mislead and intimidate. They could gain different forms and lead to unpredictable outcomes. The development of trustful relations and communication are the best solutions, and our leader showed how those steps should be taken.

“A family business is not an easy task. This leader came to the country to break some rules and help people not to divide friendship and business but use it to succeed. There are many stories of certain problems that may occur when a leader has to punish or fire a worker he/she has no tight relations with. However, when it is time to solve a problem with a friend or family member, a number of questions and concerns occur. The example demonstrated by this person inspires millions of people because he made something impossible: He combined friendship, finance, and business success over many years. He proved that people had the right to make friends in the workplace and promote trustful cooperation, sincere explanations, and fair corrections. At the same time, this leader taught us how to control emotions and how to use them for good only. Emotions and business could co-exist. This has been proven by our retiring leader, who will never be forgotten.”

Such a speech as this would show that my achievements and contributions were recognized by others, my ideas helped people, and my attitudes supported the development of the business in the UAE.

The scenario introduces David, a smart and funny person, who was a good student at Stern and then became a good worker in the company after graduation. Because of the close relationship that developed between David and me during his education, I was not able to define several slights, although still evident, shortages in his work. I remembered the words of one of the greatest philosophers that “it is unlawful either to weigh true morality against conflicting expedience, or common morality, which is cultivated by those who wish to be considered good men, against what is profitable” (Cicero 273). Therefore, I came to the conclusion that a certain change should be offered in order to avoid any unpleasant results, to improve the work of my team, and to avoid judgments. The last annual review process that took place showed that some members of the team were not good workers. My manager offered me the idea of pruning a tree so it could grow better. The hint was clear enough, and I had to make a decision about David. I understood that my friend might need to be let go. Still, it was necessary to avoid judgments and wrong considerations in the matter.

After the meeting, David offered me a quick drink that night. In order to not appear suspicious, I could not refuse his suggestion. At the same time, I also wanted to notify my friend about possible changes. Therefore, I accepted his offer of a drink. However, I did not spend much time at the bar and explained that my hurry was because of personal issues. The next day I informed all my team about the possibility of additional checks and the possible professional evaluation. I offered to unite as a team, to remove all personal and professional shortages, and to try to demonstrate the best qualities. Lateness, work evasion, and gossip were not allowed. Those rules should be followed by all members, including me. As a leader, I had to pass this check as well. When David asked about the conditions of the assessment after work, I underlined that I was not aware of the details but that assessment was directed to check all members of a team. The only thing that I could do as a leader and as his friend was to become a good example to follow. I focused on the work, tried to support all members in the same way, and organized special meetings to discuss the things that mattered to the team. I explained the importance of labor division and the worth of such issues as dexterity and justice (Smith 8). I did not want to underline the differences in the relations, but I had to explain to my friend David that all employees had to work hard to demonstrate their abilities and continue working in the company.

As soon as I made a conscious effort to become a good example for all members of my team, David included, I observed a number of changes. It turned out that some other members of the team were also good friends and tried to support each other. In addition, all employees found my leadership style to be rather attractive and effective. It turned out to be my mistake that I did not notice the full potential of my team earlier but rather focused on my friendship with David. The result of this discovery was unpredictable indeed. My team became a team of friends and experts. We got to know the weak and strong sides of each person and helped to identify the best means to achieve good results. My friendship with one person on the team was no longer enough. It was necessary to befriend all members of the team to achieve success. Therefore, the one thing I would do differently with the benefit of experience would be to pay more attention to all members of my team. Finally, when the time to meet with the manager came, I introduced the results of the performance of all my team members and proved that each person had both strong and weak aspects. If some mistakes occurred in the team, a leader should take responsibility for them. I was ready to take that responsibility, and I was justified because my team was one of the best in the company.

Starting An Essay About a Dream Job

Make topic research.

Topic research is the foremost step in writing the essay. Before you start with the writing process, make sure you have sufficient knowledge regarding the topic you wish to explore. For example, if you want to apply to a law firm, your topic must revolve around something very similar. Try to research the firm you are applying to and align your goals to that particular organization. Students who start their essay without any prior research on the topic regret later on. They are unable to complete the word count and run out of things to write.

Create A Writing Plan

The writing plan, also known as the outline, is also essential. Before writing, note down all your points on a rough piece of paper. This will give you a rough idea of how to divide the essay into different parts. There are three significant parts of your dream job essay.

Outline Writing

The outline below is one of the most common techniques used in writing a career goals essay.

Introduction

The introduction is the first part of your essay. Make sure that you keep the intro short and precise. Try to develop a thesis statement and use captivating and robust vocabulary. Doing this will instantly engage the reader in your essay and give your essay a decent start. Know that your introduction must be 10% of your essay. Anything more than that does not look professional at all.

The main body is the heart of your essay. It must include all the relevant features of your personality that make you perfect for the dream job that you wish to find. Try to divide all your relevant points into different to make the essay easy to navigate.

The last paragraph of your essay is the conclusion. Try to keep this short and make sure you grasp the reader's attention as much as possible. Use strong vocabulary and make it stand out.

Writing the Body Paragraphs

Whenever someone asks me about finding the job of my dreams, I always tell them to focus on the body paragraphs of their essay. These paragraphs hold importance because you are sharing your life ambitions. They have to be unique. Put extra effort into forming these paragraphs and try to cater to them on a personal level. If the reader connects with you in these paragraphs, the chances are that you will land the job. Make sure to put each of your achievements in the subject area in different sections so that the reader might easily navigate through them.

The length of these paragraphs must not be too much, but try to squeeze all your points effectively for maximum readability. Try using transition words so that each paragraph can connect to the other one swiftly.

The conclusion is the last part of your essay. Make sure that you don't include any new points in the last paragraph. Make it appealing and straightforward. Remember that the conclusion must reignite your essay statement. It must summarize all your points, and don't forget to add concluding remarks.

Essay Revision

Essay revision is critical. After you are done with writing, try to read the entire essay to identify and amend the problems. Revisions are critical as they help make your essay free of all errors.

Essay Proofreading

Proofreading is the process of checking your entire essay for issues in delivery and mistakes. Try to find a friend to check your essay and proofread the whole document so that he can bring a fresh set of eyes to the table. This will make your essay one of a kind.

Make Citations

You might even add relevant references to make your essay authentic. Use in-text citations and make your essay reliable to read.

Short Example of a College Essay About My Dream Job

dream job essay free example

Dream Job In Accounting And Finance

From the very first days of primary school, I was always fascinated by numbers. Back when I was in secondary school, I took part in various competitions that involved mathematical problems. This was when I realized that I had to choose a field that was big on numbers.

Being an accountant was my dream since high school. I opted for subjects in the same area and excelled through all my courses. Being a bookkeeper is the profession that most interests me since I've generally had an affection for math. Math is the one subject I am great at, and I discover it truly simple and agreeable to do. Bookkeepers plan, dissect, and check the exactness of monetary data. You can work in conditions like the public authority, non-benefit associations, and private organizations. All organizations rely upon bookkeepers to keep their business running great.

Most people find desk jobs boring. But in my case, being a desk accountant is an ideal situation. I enjoy stability and long for it. Sitting in front of a computer all day and crunching numbers is fascinating because I like being in control of that computer.

Dream jobs are hard to find. Since the start of my professional life, I have worked towards one goal. I made sure that my top priority was becoming an accountant, and I spared no effort in making my dreams come true. The career path that I took was not without any hurdles. I spent countless hours working hard and completing relevant courses when my friends were out partying and having the time of their lives. This is just a glimpse of how dedicated I am to becoming an accountant.

I led a simple life from the start. I paid my tuition fee with my hard-earned money so that my parents won't have to burden themselves with my dream. I learned that time is one of the most important things in life.

Let's now move towards finance. Portfolio management is one of my shining capabilities. Finance had always been of keen interest to me because I love managing assets and looking at trends that might raise a decent portfolio. I have myself invested in various stocks which have been profitable since the last year.

The skills I have acquired along the way are some of my best features. Just give me a laptop, and I shall conquer the world of numbers. Not just this, I have developed some excellent communication and interpersonal skills in my college life. I attended several seminars on presentation management and vocal skills, which have improved my overall confidence and minimized my stage freight.

In conclusion, I have bested all the necessary skills for a person in your accounting and finance department. I believe that I will be an exemplary asset to any organization and help in the growth of a company.

My Dream Job: Public Relations Manager

My Dream Job: Public Relations Manager

Introduction.

My dream job is to become a public relations manager. A public relations manager is a professional in an organization whose work is to ensure continuous improvement of the company's image and enhance its continued excellence. Public relations manager uses various forms of media and communication to manage, maintain, and build the reputation of a company or clients. They are, therefore, key personnel in businesses, public bodies or agencies as well as other voluntary organizations. Hotels, banks, colleges, and Universities are some examples of organizations where public relations managers can be employed. As a media and communication professional in an organization, a public relations manager communicates very crucial messages to the target audiences with an aim to develop and maintain the understanding and goodwill between the employer organization and the public (Jugenheimer et al. 2015). In addition to that, a public relations manager monitors the publicity and conducts thorough research to understand the expectations and concerns of the stakeholders of an organization to report and advise the management on the best possible ways to use their reputation to their advantage.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Public Relations Manager

The roles and responsibilities of a public relations manager may vary from one organization to another depending on the industry or sector of the organization. However, the following are the general responsibilities of a public relations manager. According to Lee et al. (2015), public relations managers are mandated to develop, plan and execute the public relations strategies to enhance the proper and desirable reputation for the company. They are the media professionals in an organization whose role is to communicate with the key spokespersons and other colleagues in an organization. They liaise with and answer questions from the media, other organizations or individual stakeholders concerning the company either through emails or telephone. Apart from that, a public relations manager research, writes, and distributes the press releases to the company's target media and collate and analyze the media coverage. They prepare and oversee the production of publicity handouts, promotional videos, films, multimedia programs, photographs, and direct mail leaflets. They organize various events that are advantageous to the company such as open days, exhibitions, press tours, and press conferences to enhance the reputation of the company. They also update and maintain the current information on the company's website. In many organizations, the public relations manager is responsible for documenting and editing in-house articles, speeches, annual reports, case studies, and magazines. Apart from that, they are also responsible for updating and managing the company's information on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. For example, in five-star hotels, a public relations manager is responsible for engaging with the hotel's customers on social media platforms to ensure that the reputation of the hotel is upheld through managing views and opinions of customers concerning the hotel. By doing this, the public relations manager is in a good position to intervene in the situations when a customer expresses negative opinions concerning the hotel which might destroy its reputation and discourage the prospective customers from visiting the hotel. In addition to that, public relations manager is responsible for promoting a favorable relationship with the community through such interactive events as open days or involvement in various community initiatives to benefit the people of the community while improving the company's image in the eyes of the community members.

Qualifications for Becoming a Public Relations Managera

To become a public relations manager, one needs to attain a minimum of bachelor's degree in public relations or any other related fields such as communications, journalism, marketing, fundraising, or English. Some companies, however, require that one must have a minimum of a master's degree to be considered into the position. Apart from earning the degree in the above fields, candidates may also be expected to have acquired a particular duration of work experience in the related field as a qualification for the position of the public relations manager. Individuals may start their career as a fundraiser, or a public relations specialist before climbing up to becoming the public relations manager (Lee et al. 2015).

How To Answer “What Is Your Dream Job?” (with Examples)

13 min read · Updated on July 21, 2023

Marsha Hebert

When an interviewer asks you this tricky question, you need a killer answer

You're face-to-face with an interviewer and things have been going well. You'd go as far as to say that you're feeling pretty confident. You might even have this in the bag. And then, they ask you this common interview question : “What is your dream job?”

It's a real curveball. Until this point, the interviewer has stuck to the position at hand. However, with this simple question, they're asking you to speak broadly about your professional future. As if that wasn't intimidating enough, there's a right and wrong way to respond. Mis-step and you might ruin your chances of getting hired.

If you want to know how to give a glowing answer, you've come to the right place. Planning your response in advance will give you the best chance of wowing the interviewer. You first need to consider what they're really asking and how you can win them over in a few sentences. In this guide, we'll take a look at how to answer this question like a pro.

First up, consider what the interviewer wants to know

Asking yourself “what is my dream job?” is something of a misleading question. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that the interviewer wants to know what you wanted to be as a child. While your dream jobs list may have included firefighter, astronaut, or dancer, that's not strictly relevant here. Unless you've done the education and training, it doesn't matter.

Equally, if your actual dream job has nothing to do with the role you're applying for, you probably shouldn't mention it. The interviewer likely isn't interested in the fact that you would love to be a singer-songwriter when you're applying for an admin role. Saying something that has zero to do with the job at hand is likely to work against you here.

To effectively answer this question, you need to get inside the interviewer's mind. Consider what they really want to know when they ask you about your dream job. Hiring managers use this seemingly innocent question to find out about your skills, personality, and goals. Here's a quick breakdown of what they hope to learn about you when you answer:

What motivates you professionally

First up, the interviewer wants to know what motivates you. What is it that drives you forward? Do you have an innate passion for this sector? Or, on the other hand, are you simply treading water until something better comes along? By asking you what your dream job is, the hiring manager is hoping to get an insight into what inspires you to work hard.

What skills you're bringing to the table

The interviewer is only interested in how your answer aligns with the job they're hiring for. With that in mind, one of the other things they're trying to determine is the skills you currently have and will be bringing to the table. This interview question gives you the opportunity to speak freely about your professional talents and how you use them.

What career plans you have for the future

Dream jobs have the unique power of forcing us to look toward the future. It's not about what you're doing right now - it's about where you envision your career going. If you have big plans for your professional future, and they align with this particular role, now is the time to talk about them. The interviewer wants to know whether you have your future career mapped out and how the role for which they are hiring fits into your journey.

How willing you are to climb the career ladder

Are you a real go-getter? Do you want to climb the career ladder? Or are you happy to stay in the same position and keep things ticking over? When an interviewer asks you what your dream job is, they're encouraging you to think big. That means considering where the position that you're applying for will take you in the years to come.

Your eagerness to learn new things and develop

Career development is a massive deal. When you're applying for a single position, it's rarely a straightforward situation. You have to consider what learning opportunities the company will afford you and how you can use them to push yourself forward. When you're answering this question, the interviewer wants to find out how eager you are to learn. Use this knowledge to your advantage and weave your willingness to do so into your answer.

Tips to help you answer this interview question

Now that you have a firm grip on what the hiring manager is asking, let's talk about how you answer the question. The last thing you want to do is to walk into your next interview without knowing what you would say here. While the question may have you scratching your head, there are a few factors that you can focus on. Here are our expert tips:

Focus on your professional values

We each have values that guide us through our careers. So, what are yours? When you're answering this interview question, you may want to start with your values and how they align with this sector. For example, if you're applying to work within a charity that educates deprived children, you can talk about how your dream job would mean making a difference to young people's lives. There's a reason that you've applied for this particular position. When you're responding to the question, include that driving force.

Talk about your long-term goals

As we've already covered, the “dream jobs'' question urges you to consider the future. Where do you see yourself in five years ? If you're the type of person who knows where you're heading, there's nothing wrong with letting the interviewer in on that secret. Of course, there's one major caveat. You need to ensure that your future goals work with the job that you're applying for. If there's any disparity there, you should leave it out.

Include the basics of the job at hand

Never lose sight of the fact that you're applying for a specific position. Sure, the question “What is your dream job?” may conjure up hundreds of interesting answers. Your mind may boggle at all of the professions that you could have. However, if none of them have anything to do with the role you're applying for, you shouldn't mention them. Instead, ensure that you talk about the fundamentals of the role that you're applying for. For example, if you are going for a managerial role, talk about your passion for leadership.

Never pinpoint a specific job title

One of the biggest mistakes that you can make when answering this interview question is pinpointing a specific job title. By doing that, you pigeon-hole yourself. Focusing on a single position makes you seem small-minded - as though you have tunnel vision. It also misses the point of the question. Don't be fooled. The interviewer is interested in how your skill and goals fit in with the job and company. Stick to a wider, more generic answer rather than providing a list of dream jobs.

Talk about the next step (after this job!)

Hiring managers are always on the hunt for candidates who want a long-term career with the company. Luckily, the “dream job” question gives you the chance to speak about how you wish to develop yourself professionally within the business. Let's say that you do land this job, what does the future hold for you? Will you be looking to take a step up in the years to come? Will you be pushing for a promotion? What plans do you have already?

There's nothing wrong with showing some ambition . While you don't want to turn around and say your “dream job” is CEO of the company, you can be honest and say you'd like to manage a team. You might talk about how you plan to learn and develop your existing skill set in the position at hand, and then take your newfound knowledge to new heights.

Speak about your ideal company culture

The company culture is the shared vision, values, and attitudes that staff members have. When the “dream job” question comes up, it's a smart time to start speaking about your ideal company culture. What do you expect from the business? How do your existing morals align with what you've seen from this company? Wherever possible, you should relate this part of your answer back to the business and the position you're going for.

Dream job examples that will impress interviewers

If you find yourself facing this interview question, you shouldn't be highlighting specific job titles. However, you can give some generic positions that showcase where you see your career going in the future. If you're looking to pique the hiring manager's interest, let them know that you have a career game plan. Here are some dream job examples:

Supervisor

Manager

Team leader

Head of department

Senior executive

You may choose to weave these terms into your answer. Rather than sharing that you want a specific job title, these names signify positions in the company. By sliding these into your response, you let the interviewer know just how ambitious you are. While your goal shouldn't be outlandish, it can pay off to let them know how high you've set your sights.

“What is my dream job?” example answers

Ready to plan out your answer? While the response you use will be unique to your experiences and goals, it's worth looking at the examples below for some inspiration. Each of the answers that we cover focuses on one approach you may choose to use:

Example 1: Talk about your talents

“My dream job would see me working closely with a variety of big name clients. I have a passion for getting to know each client on a personal level and understanding their unique needs. I would love the opportunity to further develop my interpersonal skills and create long-term professional relationships with brands from all around the globe.”

The above answer focuses on one element of the position or field, rather than being too broad. It covers one of the candidate's core skills and further explains how they use that talent when they're on the job. The response also shows that the person is passionate about building a long-term career and expanding on the talents they already possess. Rather than highlighting a position or job title, the answer talks about an aspect of the job.

Example 2: Focus on your values

“I'm looking for a position that aligns with my core value of helping others and spurring positive change. Over the years, I've volunteered with action groups that work with underprivileged communities. I am truly passionate about supporting those who are less fortunate than myself and believe that I have the skill-set to do so. For that reason, my dream job would be within a third-sector business, geared towards supporting others.”

This next example focuses on the person's specific values and delves into why they've chosen this career path. It shows the interviewer that the candidate has a true love for the work that they do and that they are serious about scoping out a career within this sector. Additionally, by mentioning their previous voluntary work, the candidate provides evidence of their interest in the industry. That simple anecdote may be enough to land them the job.

Example 3: Highlight your aspirations

“As a people person, I relish the chance to collaborate with a wider team. In my most recent position, I was in charge of overseeing a small team, allowing me to develop my leadership style. So, in my dream job, I would like to further hone this skill. I'm keen to take on more responsibility and share my knowledge with others. With that in mind, I would be aiming to reach a managerial position in the future.”

With this answer, the candidate reflects on the lessons that they've learned in their existing job and talks about where they see their career heading. Instead of stating the exact position they would be aiming for, they speak about becoming a manager. This approach tells the interviewer that they have career progression plans beyond the role.

Example 4: Express a desire to learn

“My ideal job would be one in which I can develop my skills. One of the things that has attracted me to the role at this company is the training scheme you offer. As someone who is always excited about the prospect of learning and educating myself, I would appreciate the opportunity to grow my skill set within the business. I'd then hope to take those talents into a higher level position within the company.”

If the position will afford you the chance to learn new things or even gain qualifications, it may be a smart move to focus on that. Switching your answer around to include your desire to expand your knowledge is never going to work against you. For one thing, this move shows that you've read the job specification. It also allows you to assure the hiring manager that you're a good investment for the business, as you will stick around.

How not to answer this particular question

Now that we've covered the ways that you should answer this question, there's one final thing you should know. Believe it or not, there is a wrong answer that you should avoid at all costs and it may be the first thing you think of. Don't say that the job for which you are applying is your dream job. This answer sounds entirely insincere - and it likely is.

When you give a knee-jerk reaction like this one, it tells the interviewer that you haven't given the question any real thought. Instead, you've blurted out what you think they want to hear. That can come across as smarmy and fake. You can leave the flattery at the door.

Go into the interview well prepared

If you're preparing for your next interview , don't forget to ask yourself “what is my dream job?” and draft an answer to this question. You don't want to be caught off guard when you're in the hot seat. Having at least a brief idea of how you can respond means that you won't stumble over your words. You may want to jot down some notes or even bullet-point what you may say. That way, should the question rear its ugly head, you will have a razor-sharp reply.

Acing interviews doesn't have to be challenging. If you want to give yourself a competitive edge, our expert TopInterview coaches can guide you through things.

Sample Answers to “What Is Your Dream Job?”

By Biron Clark

Published: November 19, 2023

Employers like to ask, “what is your dream job?” or “describe your dream job” for a few reasons… and there are some critical mistakes to avoid when answering this question in your job search.

You don’t need to tell a hiring manager that their position is your exact dream job in the job interview, but you do need to show that your dream job involves responsibilities that their work environment can offer.

Employers aren’t going to hire you if it seems like your dream job is completely opposite to what they offer.

That’s why it’s critical to answer this interview question correctly.

In this article, I’ll walk you through the best ways to answer this interview question, plus word-for-word sample answers that will impress a potential employer.

Why Employers Ask “What Is Your Dream Job?”

What hiring managers really want to find out is what you’re passionate about and what you enjoy. That’s why they ask you to describe your ideal job.

They want to make sure they’re hiring a job seeker who will be interested/engaged in this new job.

Why companies ask you to describe your dream job

And the last thing they want is to hire someone who won’t be satisfied or interested in performing the duties in the job posting, since that person is likely to leave the role quickly.

So, employers ask you about your dream job or dream career to learn about your long-term career goals and what motivates you . They want to determine whether you’ll be happy in this job or not.

Companies don’t expect or need to hear that their job is your dream position. However, they’d ideally like to hear that there are some similarities.

For example, if you say your dream job would involve never stepping into an office again, and you’ve applied for an office job, it’s going to cause some concerns and probably cost you the job offer!

Don’t worry if this sounds tough to navigate… we’ll talk about how to answer, “tell me about your dream job” step-by-step now…

How to Answer: “What Is Your Dream Job?”

1. give a general description, not a job title.

The first trick to answering this question without raising any red flags is to NEVER give a job title. Instead, tell them about your dream job’s characteristics.

What is your dream job - answer tip

Characteristics are things like this: a job that involves helping people, a job that will let you work with cutting edge technology, a job that is meaningful to you, etc. And you want to combine multiple characteristics, at least two.

I’ll give you a full example answer coming up soon if you’re still not sure exactly what I mean. But for now, the important thing to understand is that you do not want to name a job title when describing your dream job. So don’t say things like “Pilot, Doctor, Director of Sales, etc.”

Let’s continue with the next step to answering this question.

2. Tailor Your Answer to Fit the Job You’re Interviewing For

The next step when answering, “what is your dream job?” is to adjust your answer to make sure you’re showing some overlap between the qualities you want in a “dream job”, and the characteristics of the position you’re interviewing for.

Study the job description and know about the company before your interview . That way, you can name a few things that your dream job would have, that also seem to exist in THIS job.

That’s how to give an honest, upfront answer that also shows the hiring manager why you want this particular job.

This step is very important, and not showing some overlap between your dream job and this job can cost you the offer!

If the job you’re interviewing for is focused on managing a team and you talk about how your dream job would involve working independently and only being responsible for your own goals, that’s going to kill your chances of getting hired.

So if you’re interviewing for a leadership job, talk about what type of leadership your dream job would involve.

If you’re interviewing for a highly technical role, talk about what types of technical challenges you enjoy.

Hiring managers get excited when you show them some overlap between their job and what you enjoy doing… because that means you’re more likely to be motivated and stick around longer if they hire you.

3. Explain Why You Want Their Job

To wrap up your answer, tell the interviewer exactly what you read or saw about their company that excited you. That’s how to put their mind at ease in terms of why you wanted this job .

For example, you might say:

“So that’s why I applied for this position. I saw the job description mentioned that this team is working to create life-saving medicines, and that’s something I’m really passionate about and motivated to work on.”

We’ll look at more sample answers in the next section, so keep reading.

Example Answers to “What Is Your Dream Job?”

Now that we’ve looked at the three key steps to follow when answering, “what is your dream job?”, I also want to give you a couple of word-for-word answer samples to help you create your own answer.

Example Answer #1

“My dream job would be a combination of creating products that are making a difference in the world and getting a chance to share them with as many people as possible. I was excited about this position because I read that millions of people use your company’s products each day and it seems like the work you’re doing is having a big impact in the world.”

Notice you’re not telling them your dream job in terms of a job title… like I mentioned earlier. You’re only sharing characteristics to describe your dream job, like your desire to make a difference and your interest in having a large number of people see and use your work.

And then you’re completing your answer by relating it back to what the company is offering, and showing you did a bit of research about them!

Let’s look at three more sample answers now…

Example Answer #2

“My dream job would be leading a team that’s creating cutting-edge technologies that are used by millions. I read on your job description that this Supervisor role has a chance to grow into a Manager in the next 1-2 years, and it seems like the apps your company is building are having a big impact on the business world already, so I knew I should apply!”

Example Answer #3

“I would describe my dream job as a mix of my last two positions. In my last role, I had the chance to lead a couple of challenging projects and coordinate across multiple teams, but I didn’t get to do as much hands-on work as I would have liked. In my prior role, I was doing the type of hands-on work that I enjoy most: product design and development. However, at that point in my career, I wasn’t doing any leadership tasks. I’m looking for a chance to combine those two areas now and I was excited to see this type of mix mentioned on the job description, which is one reason I applied for the position here.”

Example Answer #4

“My dream job is a position that combines my customer service skills but also places me in a leadership position where I can facilitate the career growth of others. I enjoy leading and began to take on some training and mentorship duties in my last two jobs. I applied to this specific job because it seems like it’d provide an ideal career step, allowing me to keep working in customer service while also leading a small team and providing a positive impact as a leader. In general, I like a challenge, too. So I’m looking for a position that gives me the opportunity to take on more or different responsibilities than my last job. I don’t like to stay stagnant and not be growing. I love that this position builds on my existing skills but also would allow me to hone new skills.”

Note how the example answer above shows the employer quite clearly why you’re interested in the job you’re applying for.

You can pick and choose which aspects of the position to discuss, but it’s always a good idea to spend time sharing why their specific position interests you when interviewing. You can do this in response to a variety of interview questions .

And you can talk about a range of job features/aspects, from company culture to day-to-day duties.

Always do something to show that you truly understand and want this job, though. That’s one of the more important final thoughts that I want to leave you with.

Conclusion: Key Steps to Remember When You Describe Your Dream Job

Now that we’ve looked at word-for-word example answers, here’s a quick recap of the method I recommend:

  • Never mention a specific job title when describing your dream job or career. Instead, use words that describe what your dream job would look like. Discuss the responsibilities that your dream job involves.
  • Choose at least two or three phrases/words that describe what your ideal position would look like from a day-to-day standpoint, and try to pick responsibilities that overlap with the job listing of the role you’re interviewing for.
  • Conclude by showing the hiring manager that you did some research about their company and position, and explain why you’re interested in their job.

If you follow these guidelines, you will keep your answer relevant to the job you’re applying for and deliver a convincing response to, “what is your dream job?”

Just make sure you practice your answer a few times, too (with a peer/friend, or by recording yourself talking with your phone’s sound recorder app). That way, you’ll be sure you sound confident and clear when you describe your dream job.

Having a goal or aim in life is very important, it gives our life a purpose and direction. While growing up every person dreams about what they want to become in the future. Almost all of us think about our dream job and what our life will look like after we start to work in that job. Like other people, I also have the ambition to become a medical doctor one day.  As a kid, I was always influenced and inspired by doctors. The most prominent reason I chose this as my dream career is that I want to help humanity by caring for their physical health. In this dream career essay, I will discuss how and why I chose to become a medical doctor.

My Dream Job Essay Example – 700 Word Long Essay

According to American author, Suzy Kassem, “A heart without dreams is like a bird without feathers” .  This shows how important aim and ambition are in life. Our goals in life give us direction and purpose. A bird cannot fly without feathers and a person cannot flourish in life without any aim. As kids, we all had different ideas about what we wanted to become in our professional life. Unlike the past when everyone only wanted to become doctors, engineers, and lawyers things have now changed. Nowadays people want to become singers, artists, poets, musicians, and whatnot. I also have an ambition in life and that is to become a medical doctor, just not some ordinary doctor. I want to be a cardiologist who specializes in studies of the heart. This is my dream career because it will enable me to help humanity by healing their hearts.

When I was young I wanted to be an astronaut until one day when I realized that people are dying every day because there are very few doctors. On top of that, the cardiologists were even lesser. Good cardiologists at that time were not enough to attend to the heart problems of a population that big. Because of this lack of good doctors cardiologists only attended to patients who paid more money for their services and the poor patients were dying without anybody taking care of them. My grandmother was also a heart patient and one day she died of a heart attack because my father was unable to pay the doctor’s fee for heart surgery. That day I made a promise to myself that I will become a cardiologist to help the poor and needy people.

Another thing I like about this profession is that medical doctors work like scientists and discoverers. They do deep research and experiment to help patients suffering from different problems. They attend different seminars and learn all the time. I find all these tasks very exciting and challenging. I believe that when I become a cardiologist I would enjoy performing these tasks which will provide me with job satisfaction. A medical profession like being a doctor is considered the noblest job as compared to other professions. There is a huge demand for good cardiologists all around the world which also means that I will be able to live a luxurious life.

Nowadays as a teenager, I am in the company of a very intelligent academic expert who is also a great teacher, mentor, and role model for me. He is none other than my father who is also a surgeon by profession. At one point when I became scared of the long struggle to become a doctor, my father told me how to face challenges and not to run away from them. He motivated me to set my own goals and gain knowledge to pursue my ultimate goal. Now under the influence of a good teacher in my college who is offering all professional help, I am confident about achieving my career and dreams. The most important thing to me at this time is my passion and desire to achieve this dream. I know I have to work hard to achieve this dream job.

I plan to pay more attention to my education and practice researching as well. I plan to be active in school and participate in programs that give information about how to enter and survive in the health sector. I also wish to voluntarily participate in health centers to support our community. With these plans, I hope that step by step I can be successful in achieving my dream job. I also know that getting the best medical education can put a financial strain on me, therefore I plan to get a job while studying to meet my financial needs. I am willing to do all this so that no poor heart patient that I know of will die from heart problems like my grandmother.

In conclusion, my dream job is more than gaining a position of power, respect, or financial stability. My dream job is to help humanity and especially poor patients by treating them with the respect all humans deserve.

My Dream To Become A Doctor – 300 Word Short  Essay Sample Sample

We all have dreams and ambitions while growing up. Every one of us wants to become like those who inspire and motivate us in life. Just like Martin Luther King who fought for the rights of black people I also have a dream. However, my dream is about my future profession. Like many people nowadays I also want to become a medical doctor. The most important thing for choosing this profession is to help humanity and fulfill the ever-growing need for doctors in our community. In this essay, I will discuss why I chose the doctor profession as a dream career for me.

I want to pursue this career because of an experience I had some years ago. My grandmother died from Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). She used to experience severe chest pain, breathing problems, and nausea but no cardiologist attended to her because my father did not have any money back then. I loved her with all my heart but I could not do anything for her at that time. When she passed away I made a promise to myself that I will help all poor people and will not charge them money. This sad event changed my life for the better. Career-wise now I have an aim in life with a passion to pursue it with all my heart.

I know that becoming a doctor is not easy, that is why I am studying hard to achieve this life goal. My mother and teachers always taught me that with passion, hard work, and motivation every goal can be achieved. This is why I am working day and night to become a better student. I also want to become a doctor because it is the noblest job that can help me have a fulfilling career. Doctors nowadays can also afford all luxuries and still help the people in need by giving them money and free services. So, these are some of the reasons why my dream job is to become a doctor.

Want To Land Your Dream Job In The Food Industry? Take These Steps To Stand Out In The Process

November 15, 2017

avatar author

Want to make your love of cooking, trying new restaurants, or growing your own backyard veggies into your career?

It is possible to turn your passion into your job—if you take the right approach.

There are so many incredible professions tied to food that require a variety of skills—opportunities like becoming a social media manager for a consumer food brand, working as a software engineer for a food delivery startup, or making sales for a restaurant supplier. Even Fortune 500 organizations like Unilever (the makers of Ben & Jerry’s and Hellman’s Mayo) offer incredible full-time jobs and internships in marketing, supply chain management, R&D, and more.

No matter the type of role you are applying for, the best way to differentiate yourself from other candidates is to show employers what makes you unique. Most students and grads don’t realize that companies care about who you are as a person, and what makes you, you. It’s not all about your past work experiences!

Check out some of the tips below for what to talk about on the job search, and how you can shape your “personal brand,” to land your dream position in the food industry.

Talk about your leadership experiences.

Strong leadership skills are vital for success in any role, especially in the food industry. Leadership means many different things, but at its core, a leader is someone who can ”guide or direct a group.”

Think through past experiences in which you displayed leadership. Did you lead your group project in your finance class to an A grade? Were you one of the editors of your school’s Spoon U chapter? These are both excellent examples of leadership that show any prospective employer that you can work well within a team, and collaborate towards a common goal.

However, leadership can also be shown in less apparent ways. Perhaps you worked as a nanny in college to make extra money to pay for your books. Or, managed your family’s diner on the weekends to help your parents make ends meet. Both of these examples of leadership show that you take responsibility, and aren’t afraid of hard work.

Make sure to mention your hobbies.

Believe it or not, companies want to know who you are outside of work or the classroom. Employers today are incredibly focused on hiring teams with diverse interests, which you can bring to life through your hobbies.

No matter what your hobbies are, make sure to talk about them to employers…especially if they have to do with food! Do you bake your own desserts with ingredients you source locally? Are you obsessed with reading biographies of famous chefs? Or, perhaps you binge watch Chef’s Table on Netflix!

Pro tip: By sharing your hobbies, you might even find you have something extremely rare in common with the person who is interviewing you!

Show off your social media presence.

Finally, social media is not just a place for tagging friends in memes and posting pictures from a recent formal. Social media provides an excellent opportunity to brand yourself professionally and curate the image you want others to see of you online.

Maybe it starts with posting about some of the hobbies mentioned above on your channels. Or, perhaps you can create a separate set of handles to feature the delicious foods that you cook, or, the adventurous dishes you try wherever you eat out. Many employers (particularly in creative fields) are excited when applicants show who they are online in a professional but colorful way.

Don’t be afraid to make your social media presence a part of your next professional conversation. Just make sure to curate the image online that you want them to see.

So, start utilizing your leadership, hobbies, and social media presence to help you form your personal brand. In doing so, you’ll be able to convey what you’re passionate about and demonstrate your value in a way that will make you an even more desirable hire to any employer!
