Essay on Albert Einstein

Science reached a high peak with the great scientist Albert Einstein. He is known as one of the greatest thinkers and scientists of the twentieth century. He is the one who advanced the pillar of Modern Physics. Albert Einstein is best known for introducing the theory of relativity in Physics, which helped us to understand time, universe, gravity, and space. Here are a few sample essays on Albert Einstein.

100 Words Essay on Albert Einstein

200 words essay on albert einstein, 500 words essay on albert einstein.

Essay on Albert Einstein

Published in 1905, Einstein's first article established him as one of the world’s premier scientists. Einstein admired the environment much more compared to other children and wished to spend more time with nature as the sounds and sights fascinated him. While employed in the patent office, Einstein did not miss the opportunity to solve the beam light problem, which he had been fascinated with since he was 16. Albert Einstein spent his entire life working for harmony and abominated war. Albert was in support of the American Civil Right Movement, and he was totally against violence. For his law of photoelectric effect, Einstein received a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.

Born on March 14, 1879, Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist. Albert studied in a Catholic Elementary School in Munich. He was then transferred to the Luitpold Gymnasium (today known as Albert Einstein Gymnasium) at 8, where he received primary and secondary education. Albert Einstein was not much of a fan of education, yet he enjoyed learning and reading independently. Einstein had these two ‘wonders’ in his early years, which affected him greatly. At age five, an encounter with a compass mystified him that the invisible forces could divert the needle. Secondly, at age 12, he found a book of geometry, which he devoured, and gave it the name “sacred little geometry book”.

Contribution To Physics

He significantly contributed to Physics in 1905 when he developed the Theory of Special Relativity. From a young age, Einstein excelled in Physics and Maths and even discovered his original Pythagorean theorem at age 12. His father wanted him to go with Electrical Engineering, but Einstein did not agree with him and resented the school’s regiment and the teaching method. Einstein was much ahead of his peers in Maths and Physics and excelled in them. His passion for algebra and geometry convinced everyone that nature could be understood as a mathematical structure. He was also awarded a Federal Teaching Diploma.

Einstein was one of the founding members of the German Democratic Party in 1918. He was critical of capitalism and was a socialist. Impressed by Mahatma Gandhi, Einstein described him as a role model for future generations and exchanged written letters with him. Einstein was totally in support of non-violence. He was also a Nobel Prize winner.

Childhood Issues | Einstein was unable to speak in his childhood because his skull was larger than the rest of his body. Slowly and gradually, his head began to improve and take shape. Still, everyone believed him to be sick until that time.

Religious Beliefs | Albert Einstein did not believe in any personal God for all the fates, destiny and actions. He also clarified that he was not an atheist and instead called himself a deeply religious non-believer. He observed and admitted that without ethical culture, there is no stand for salvation for humanity.

Stint With Music | Einstein’s mother played the piano quite well and wanted her son to learn the same, so he could develop a love for music. At age 5, Einstein began to play the piano, though he did not enjoy it much. He discovered the violin sonatas of Mozart at age 13, and at that time, he started to enjoy music. Einstein played Chamber music for his friends and family.

Contribution To Physics | He received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the Photoelectric Effect. He also launched the new science of Cosmology. A Nobel Prize was awarded in 1993 to the discoverers of gravitational waves predicted by Einstein.

Death | Einstein died in the University Medical Centre of Princeton and Plainsboro, after his death, during an autopsy, the pathologist removed Einstein’s brain without the permission of his family and preserved it to know the real cause of Einstein’s intelligence. Einstein’s legacy was passed on to other scientists.

An Incident From Einstein’s Life

In 1919, at the University of Berlin, while working as a theoretical physics professor, Einstein theorised that an impending solar eclipse would provide a rare opportunity to observe gravity’s effect on light. The reports proved his observation to be correct. This observation of Einstein sent a shock wave through the scientific community and the world. Einstein spent the next few years travelling, speaking engagements, and receiving awards. He also founded the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1921 and won the Nobel Prize in the same year.

What Do We Learn From Einstein?

Albert Einstein had the ability to think outside of the square and apply great imagination and creativity to science. This ability of his influenced many people to think outside their comfort zone, explore chances and the world around them. Einstein gave way to many younger generations to think and rethink what they want to do and focus on it, to give their hundred percent in achieving their desired goals. Einstein also taught us not to blindly believe in whatever is being told but to question everything and look for reasons. Albert Einstein taught us to live in the moment and to keep going in the right direction, and success will automatically follow. One should make mistakes but also learn from them, as one who does not commit mistakes practically does not do anything.

Essay on Quantum Physics

Students are often asked to write an essay on Quantum Physics in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Quantum Physics

Introduction to quantum physics.

Quantum physics, also known as quantum mechanics, is a branch of physics that deals with phenomena on a very small scale, like molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles.

Quantum Particles

In the quantum world, particles can exist in multiple places at once. This is called superposition. Particles can also be linked across space, known as entanglement.

Wave-Particle Duality

Quantum physics suggests that particles can behave both like particles and waves. This is known as wave-particle duality.

Uncertainty Principle

The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle states that it is impossible to accurately measure both the position and momentum of a particle at the same time.

250 Words Essay on Quantum Physics

Quantum physics, also known as quantum mechanics, is a fundamental theory in physics that describes nature at the smallest scales of energy levels of atoms and subatomic particles. It departs from classical mechanics primarily at the quantum realm of atomic and subatomic length scales.

Quantum Superposition and Entanglement

Two of the most intriguing principles in quantum physics are superposition and entanglement. Superposition refers to the quantum phenomenon where a particle can exist in multiple states at once, only collapsing into one state when observed. This is best exemplified by the famous Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment.

Quantum entanglement, on the other hand, describes the inexplicable interconnectedness of particles regardless of distance. If two particles are entangled, the state of one immediately influences the state of the other, even if they are light-years apart.

Quantum Physics and Reality

Quantum physics challenges our perception of reality. The Copenhagen interpretation, one of the earliest and most commonly taught interpretations of quantum mechanics, suggests that a quantum particle doesn’t exist in one state or another, but in all of its possible states at once. It’s only when we observe its state that a quantum particle is essentially forced to choose one probability, and that’s the state that we observe.

Quantum physics, while complex and counterintuitive, provides a more accurate description of the universe at microscopic scales. It has revolutionized our understanding of the physical world and continues to inspire new technologies, from quantum computing to quantum teleportation.

500 Words Essay on Quantum Physics

Quantum physics, also known as quantum mechanics, is a branch of physics that deals with phenomena on a very small scale, such as molecules, atoms, and even smaller particles. It is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles.

The Birth of Quantum Mechanics

Quantum mechanics was developed in the early 20th century as a response to problems that could not be solved by classical physics. The theory of classical physics, based on the principles laid down by Isaac Newton, worked well for macroscopic objects but failed at the atomic and subatomic levels. Quantum mechanics was born out of the need to explain behaviors that did not fit into the classical framework, such as the photoelectric effect and blackbody radiation.

Key Principles of Quantum Physics

One of the most intriguing aspects of quantum physics is the principle of superposition, which holds that a physical system—such as an electron—can exist in multiple states simultaneously. This principle is illustrated by the famous Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment.

Another fundamental principle in quantum physics is wave-particle duality. This concept suggests that all particles also have properties of waves. It’s an idea that was first introduced by Louis de Broglie in 1924.

Quantum entanglement, another key concept, describes a phenomenon where particles become interconnected and the state of one can instantly affect the state of the other, no matter the distance between them. This phenomenon was famously referred to as “spooky action at a distance” by Albert Einstein.

Quantum Physics and the Modern World

Quantum physics has been instrumental in the development of many technologies that we use today. Semiconductors, the building blocks of modern electronics, function due to principles of quantum mechanics. The field has also given rise to technologies like lasers and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). More recently, quantum physics has become essential in the developing field of quantum computing, which has the potential to revolutionize technology.

Challenges and Future Directions

Despite its successes, quantum mechanics also presents several philosophical and practical challenges. The interpretation of quantum mechanics remains a contentious issue among physicists. Additionally, the unification of quantum mechanics with general relativity, to create a single theory that can describe all of the fundamental forces in nature, remains an unsolved problem in theoretical physics.

In conclusion, quantum physics is a fascinating and complex field that has revolutionized our understanding of the universe. It has led to numerous technological advancements and continues to be an active area of research with promising future applications. Despite its complexities and unresolved questions, the study of quantum physics offers a glimpse into the fundamental workings of our universe.

Caltech

What Is Quantum Physics?

This article was reviewed by a member of Caltech's Faculty .

Quantum physics is the study of matter and energy at the most fundamental level. It aims to uncover the properties and behaviors of the very building blocks of nature.

While many quantum experiments examine very small objects, such as electrons and photons, quantum phenomena are all around us, acting on every scale. However, we may not be able to detect them easily in larger objects. This may give the wrong impression that quantum phenomena are bizarre or otherworldly. In fact, quantum science closes gaps in our knowledge of physics to give us a more complete picture of our everyday lives.

Quantum discoveries have been incorporated into our foundational understanding of materials, chemistry, biology, and astronomy. These discoveries are a valuable resource for innovation, giving rise to devices such as lasers and transistors, and enabling real progress on technologies once considered purely speculative, such as quantum computers . Physicists are exploring the potential of quantum science to transform our view of gravity and its connection to space and time. Quantum science may even reveal how everything in the universe (or in multiple universes) is connected to everything else through higher dimensions that our senses cannot comprehend.

The Origins of Quantum Physics

The field of quantum physics arose in the late 1800s and early 1900s from a series of experimental observations of atoms that didn't make intuitive sense in the context of classical physics. Among the basic discoveries was the realization that matter and energy can be thought of as discrete packets, or quanta, that have a minimum value associated with them. For example, light of a fixed frequency will deliver energy in quanta called "photons." Each photon at this frequency will have the same amount of energy, and this energy can't be broken down into smaller units. In fact, the word "quantum" has Latin roots and means "how much."

Knowledge of quantum principles transformed our conceptualization of the atom, which consists of a nucleus surrounded by electrons. Early models depicted electrons as particles that orbited the nucleus, much like the way satellites orbit Earth. Modern quantum physics instead understands electrons as being distributed within orbitals, mathematical descriptions that represent the probability of the electrons' existence in more than one location within a given range at any given time. Electrons can jump from one orbital to another as they gain or lose energy, but they cannot be found between orbitals.

Other central concepts helped to establish the foundations of quantum physics:

  • Wave-particle duality: This principle dates back to the earliest days of quantum science. It describes the outcomes of experiments that showed that light and matter had the properties of particles or waves, depending on how they were measured. Today, we understand that these different forms of energy are actually neither particle nor wave. They are distinct quantum objects that we cannot easily conceptualize.
  • Superposition : This is a term used to describe an object as a combination of multiple possible states at the same time. A superposed object is analogous to a ripple on the surface of a pond that is a combination of two waves overlapping. In a mathematical sense, an object in superposition can be represented by an equation that has more than one solution or outcome.
  • Uncertainty principle : This is a mathematical concept that represents a trade-off between complementary points of view. In physics, this means that two properties of an object, such as its position and velocity, cannot both be precisely known at the same time. If we precisely measure the position of an electron, for example, we will be limited in how precisely we can know its speed.
  • Entanglement : This is a phenomenon that occurs when two or more objects are connected in such a way that they can be thought of as a single system, even if they are very far apart. The state of one object in that system can't be fully described without information on the state of the other object. Likewise, learning information about one object automatically tells you something about the other and vice versa.

Mathematics and the Probabilistic Nature of Quantum Objects

Because many of the concepts of quantum physics are difficult if not impossible for us to visualize, mathematics is essential to the field. Equations are used to describe or help predict quantum objects and phenomena in ways that are more exact than what our imaginations can conjure.

Mathematics is also necessary to represent the probabilistic nature of quantum phenomena. For example, the position of an electron may not be known exactly. Instead, it may be described as being in a range of possible locations (such as within an orbital), with each location associated with a probability of finding the electron there.

Given their probabilistic nature, quantum objects are often described using mathematical "wave functions," which are solutions to what is known as the Schrödinger equation . Waves in water can be characterized by the changing height of the water as the wave moves past a set point. Similarly, sound waves can be characterized by the changing compression or expansion of air molecules as they move past a point. Wave functions don't track with a physical property in this way. The solutions to the wave functions provide the likelihoods of where an observer might find a particular object over a range of potential options. However, just as a ripple in a pond or a note played on a trumpet are spread out and not confined to one location, quantum objects can also be in multiple places—and take on different states, as in the case of superposition—at once.

Observation of Quantum Objects

The act of observation is a topic of considerable discussion in quantum physics. Early in the field, scientists were baffled to find that simply observing an experiment influenced the outcome. For example, an electron acted like a wave when not observed, but the act of observing it caused the wave to collapse (or, more accurately, "decohere") and the electron to behave instead like a particle. Scientists now appreciate that the term "observation" is misleading in this context, suggesting that consciousness is involved. Instead, "measurement" better describes the effect, in which a change in outcome may be caused by the interaction between the quantum phenomenon and the external environment, including the device used to measure the phenomenon. Even this connection has caveats, though, and a full understanding of the relationship between measurement and outcome is still needed.

The Double-Slit Experiment

Perhaps the most definitive experiment in the field of quantum physics is the double-slit experiment . This experiment, which involves shooting particles such as photons or electrons through a barrier with two slits, was originally used in 1801 to show that light is made up of waves. Since then, numerous incarnations of the experiment have been used to demonstrate that matter can also behave like a wave and to demonstrate the principles of superposition, entanglement, and the observer effect.

The field of quantum science may seem mysterious or illogical, but it describes everything around us, whether we realize it or not. Harnessing the power of quantum physics gives rise to new technologies, both for applications we use today and for those that may be available in the future .

Essay on Albert Einstein 500 Words in English

Below we have provided Albert Einstein Essay in English suitable for classes 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10. This detailed essay on Albert Einstein of 300-500 words is greatly helpful for all school students to perform well in essay competitions.

“Life is like a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” These were the words of a renowned German American scientist well-known for his theories on relativity, matter, and heat – Albert Einstein. He is considered the greatest physicist of all time because it was believed that he possessed a distinct perspective towards the universe.

Early Life of Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was born on 14th March 1879 in Ulm, Wurttemberg, Germany. He belonged to a Jewish religion but was not devout. His father’s name was Hermann Einstein, a salesman and later, along with his brother, ran an electrochemical factory. His mother, Pauline Koch, was a homemaker. He also had a sister named Maja, who was two years younger than him.

Two events left a lasting impact on Albert Einstein’s life. The first was when his father gave him a magnetic compass at age five. He was mystified that an invisible force could deflect the needle. This provided a base for lifelong fascination towards unseen forces. The other wonder hit him when he discovered a book on geometry at twelve and cherished it the most. He even named it a sacred little geometry book.

It is at this age he turned profoundly religious and also composed several songs in praise of God. However, this too changed when he got acquainted with science and started reading science-related books. His religious beliefs contradicted his rational views, which were challenging for him to overcome. Albert hated receiving instructions in school and often felt out of place and a victim of Prussian-style education that seemed to choke originality and creativity.

For that reason, his teacher advised him to learn at home instead of attending school. Moreover, one of his teachers even remarked that he would never amount to anything. Another prominent influence on him was when a young medical student, Max Talmud, became his informal tutor and introduced mathematics and philosophy to him. This proved to be a pivotal turning point in his life.

Albert Einstein’s father’s repeated business failures disrupted his studies, and they moved to Milan, Italy. He was left at Munich in a boarding school to finish his education. But as he was alone, he felt miserable and repelled against military duty. Six months later, he ran away and arrived at his parents’ house. His parents were worried and realized the problems he would face as a school dropout.

Albert Einstein Essay in English

Fortunately, in Zurich at Swiss Federal Polytechnic School, he excelled in mathematics and physics entrance tests but failed in Biology, French, and Chemistry. But due to his excellence in mathematics, he was allowed to enroll in the polytechnic on the condition to finish his formal schooling. In 1896, he graduated and met students who became his lifelong friends, such as Marcel Grossmann, a mathematician, and Besso.

There he met his future wife, Mileva Maric, who is also a physics student from Serbia. After completing graduation, he used to study advanced subjects on his own and often cut classes which angered some of his professors, especially Heinrich Weber. Unfortunately, when he asked Weber for a letter of recommendation, he was turned down multiple times for which he could not apply for an academic position.

Later, his father’s friend Marcel Grossmann recommended that he take up a clerk position in the Swiss patent office in Bern. His job required him to just put applications in for the patents, which provided him more time to devout to the physics questions that were brooding in his mind and do scientific papers. With a small but steady income, he felt confident and married Maric on 6th January 1903. The couple was blessed with two sons, namely Hans and Eduard, in 1904 and 1910.

Achievements of Albert Einstein

While working in the patent’s office, he seized the opportunity to solve the question of beam light that he was obsessed with when he was sixteen. The deep insight-led Albert formulates the principle of relativity. Furthermore, in 1905, he published four papers that altered the course of physics. Other scientists such as Henri Poincare and Hendrik Lorentz tried to put forth the theory of special relativity, but Einstein was a pioneer in assembling the whole approach.

Both approaches brought him laurels and popularity across the globe. Albert Einstein gained recognition and respect for his valuable contribution and was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for his research on the Photoelectric effect. His marriage failed with Maric, and he later married his cousin Elsa.

Physics Essay

physics essay 500 words

Physics Of Bowling

Kyle Yatsonsky Dr. Croom Physics 30 May 2015 The Physics of Bowling Bowling is a fun filled pastime with a lot more to it than what meets the eye. Some of the concepts involved are energy, momentum, forces, velocity, acceleration, and center of mass. The ultimate goal of a bowler is to knock down as many pins as he can. To successfully do this, a bowler needs to first consider the trajectory in which his ball travels down the lane. Energy is a system’s “ability to do work.”(Elert) The unit for

Lacrosse And Physics

Lacrosse and physics are not the same, but physics is everywhere in this sport. So many different physics topics can be seen in this sport. Because of physics lacrosse has evolved into the sport it is today. The shot and pass have been enhanced because of the laws of physics, but there are more topics all around the game. Passing is the way to get the ball around in this sport. A major part of the of this action is friction. Air resistance affects the ball, it slows it down and brings it down

Physics in Sports      When many people think of sports, the topic of physics doesn't always come to mind. They usually don't think about connecting athletics with academics. In reality math, science, and especially physics, tie into every aspect of sports. Mousetrap Car Physics

For my physics project I am choosing to explain the concept of Mousetrap Cars and the physics that is central to it. The reason I am choosing to explain the physics behind this particular type of car was because I originally built a mousetrap car for an engineering class I had taken previously. However the car didn’t work to my expectations and wasn’t able to travel a distance of more than a couple of feet. I want to talk about why the car I had built did not travel a far distance and what changes

The History of Physics Essay

The History of Physics In order to attempt to trace the origins of the modern science that we now refer to as “physics,” we must begin with the origin of the term itself. Taken from the Greek word “physika” meaning growth or nature, physics most obviously began as the intelligent study of the human environment (Webster 393). From superstition and religious practices, the foundation of all other sciences was born. These concepts have subsequently grown into what we regard

How To Write An Amazing 500 Word Essay For College And Scholarship Applications (+Examples)

500 words. It doesn’t sound like much. But when you’re asked to write a 500 word essay, you’re not alone if you find yourself staring aimlessly at a blank screen — especially when it comes to essays for college and scholarship applications.

Why? Because, often, you’re trying to write it using the standard essay format you learned in school. You know the format. It typically goes like this: introduction with  a thesis statement, body paragraphs supporting the thesis, and conclusion paragraphs that restate your thesis.

BUT college admissions officers and scholarship selection committees usually aren’t looking for those types of 500 word essays.

So, how do you write the type of  500 word essay that can help you get into college and win college scholarships ? Keep reading! Because, in this blog post, we’re going to discuss:

  • How the goal of a college or scholarship essay is different from the goal of an academic paper
  • How to format a 500 word essay for college and scholarship applications
  • 2 examples of essays you can look to for inspiration
  • 5 tips to help improve your writing process when writing these essays

Let’s dive into that first point right now!

The Goal of a 500 Word Essay for College and Scholarship Applications

Your goal when writing college and scholarship application essays is simple: stand out as one of the most qualified and interesting applicants. And that’s much different from the goal you have when writing an academic paper for a high school or college class.

In those classes, you’re usually writing essays to explain, argue for, or defend an idea. For example, your high school teacher might ask you to write a 500 word essay on a topic like, “ Is testing products on animals ethical?”

But you’re unlikely to find this type of question on college and scholarship applications. Why? Because few college admissions officers and scholarship selection committees want to read thousands upon thousands of essays from students who all write about the same thing using the same structure.

They’d much rather learn more about what makes you and your way of thinking unique! And that’s why you’re more likely to find essay prompts like:

  • “Has there been a time when you’ve had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs?” ( Coalition Application)
  • “Tell us about what you value in a community and how your perspective, lived experiences, or beliefs might contribute to your College community.” ( Sarah Lawrence College )
  • “How has creativity helped you in problem solving?” ( Dixie Belle Paint Company Scholarship)

Do you see what we’re talking about? Your goal with these types of essays isn’t to make an evidence-based argument to support a thesis statement. Nope. Your goal with this essay type is to give the person reading it a better idea of who you are as a person!

But how do you format and write such an essay? Let us show you how!

How to Format a 500 Word Essay for College and Scholarship Applications

To write an amazing essay for college and scholarship applications you’ve got to use your creative writing skills. And, oftentimes, that means breaking the standard “introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion” essay format you’d use for high school or college papers.

Here’s a format you can follow instead.

Hook introduction

The first one or two lines of your essay are the most important. And, therefore, they need to be engaging. Because, if they’re not, do you know what your reader is likely to do? Skim. Scan. And get bored real quick.

That’s why for these types of 500 word essays, you’ve got to start with a hook introduction. What’s that? It’s an opening to your essay that’s so intriguing that your reader can’t help but keep reading because they’re hooked and want to know more.

There are a few ways to go about writing a hook introduction. Check out some of the awesome examples in this video from the College Essay Guy .

  • Context for the hook

Now that you’ve got your reader hooked, you need to give them context. Why are you telling this story? What’s the importance of this moment in your life? What does it say about you?

Bring your reader into your essay using descriptive details that show rather than tell why you’re a deserving applicant. If you’re not sure what it means to show rather than tell, don’t worry. We explain that writing technique in the 5 essay writing tips we share later in this blog post.

Examples that showcase your strengths

Once you’ve given context, your job is to tell the story in a way that showcases your strengths that are related to the essay prompt. For instance, if the prompt asks you about creativity in problem solving, walk your reader through a moment you creatively solved a complex problem.

BUT please resist the urge to be too obvious. You don’t need to say something like “this story is a great example of how I creatively solve problems.” Why? Because that’s boring, and you know it!

That boring sentence is also a great example of doing more telling than showing, which is the opposite of what you want to do. Again, you want to describe your strengths in a way that makes them clear and memorable in your readers’ minds.

  • A conclusion that makes it clear you’ve responded to the essay prompt

You’re almost done! Now, you just need to wrap up your story nicely with a strong conclusion. But, again, this isn’t a research paper for your World History class. So, ditch boring phrases like “in conclusion” or “in summary”. Instead, use natural language to tell the end of the story.

But also remember: this is an essay to get you into college or win scholarship money. So, make sure you’ve fully responded to the prompt. For example, in scholarship applications, you may want to wrap up your essay by specifically stating how the scholarship will benefit your education.

500 Word Essay Examples

Want to see some examples before you start writing your 500 word essay? Good idea! Here are two examples of winning essays that ditched the standard essay format and told an engaging, memorable story related to the essay prompt.

Example 500 Word Essay #1

The first essay comes from a student admitted to Johns Hopkins University. The essay was originally posted on JHU’s “Essays that Worked” section of its undergraduate admissions website.

Essay prompt: Founded on a spirit of exploration and discovery, Johns Hopkins University encourages students to share their perspectives, develop their interests and pursue new experiences. Use this space to share something you’d like the admissions committee to know about you (your interests, your background, your identity or your community) and how it has shaped what you want to get out of your college experience at Hopkins.

Essay length: 400 words

I cannot dance.

This is not something I often admit willingly; in fact, it is quite baffling to me how horribly incapable I am at performing even the most basic movements on command. My grandmother often describes it as “a tragedy” as she is forced to watch her grandchild absolutely butcher our country’s cultural dances, beautiful expressions of our unique West African roots turned into poor facsimiles by my robotic movements.

And yet, year after year, I find myself taking the dance floor at my family’s events, seemingly unaware of my objective lack of skill. Eventually, my display proves to be so amazingly unbearable that I am removed from the floor and shown the correct movements over and over again until I am able to replicate them well enough to come back. Bizarrely, despite my previous declaration that I cannot dance, for the past three years, I have found myself performing an entire choreographed routine at my school’s yearly pep rallies.

It is through looking back at these events that I realize that I have created a mischaracterization of my dancing abilities through my decisive first sentence. I can dance and am, in fact, very capable of doing so, but not when I act insularly. My ability to dance correlates directly with how willing I am to collaborate, the input and support of others turning the uncoordinated and unwieldy into the near-graceful.

My attempts at dancing have led me to value community and collaboration greatly, and I find myself seeking and being drawn towards environments that will allow me to continue to develop both of these values as I learn and grow. Through my internship with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, I was exposed to and became fascinated by the collaborative spirit that lies at the heart of Johns Hopkins. The idea that one cannot discover or innovate when working alone was affirmed during my research, and I have come to see that mutual collaboration and community are integral aspects of Johns Hopkins’ unique culture. From the research initiatives that breach the boundaries between class levels, to the many organizations such as the Tutorial Project, relying on the shared initiatives of different students to directly make an impact on Baltimore and its many communities, and the distinctive access to especially interdisciplinary topics such as neuromorphic systems, I view that Johns Hopkins exemplifies the peak of collaborative achievement in education.

Example 500 Word Essay #2

This second example essay was written by a student who won the Women’s World Banking’s Founder’s Scholarship .

Essay prompt: Unfortunately, there’s no information listed about the essay prompt on the foundation’s website. But, based on the content of the essay, we assume that this was an essay asking the student to explain why she deserved this scholarship.

Essay length: 464 words

“Twice a week I head down to volunteer at the Los Sures Social Services office, situated next to the local senior citizen home, to help at the food pantry. We distribute food to people in my neighborhood. Many are familiar faces. Many are middle-aged Hispanic women with children dangling from their hips like grass skirts. These women are there as a result of their culture and lack of financial knowledge. In our Spanish culture, patriarchy prevents women from preparing for themselves as much as they should. This leads to Hispanic women having little or no money management skills. Financial illiteracy is a major issue in my neighborhood, and that is why I hope to give Hispanic women a chance for a better future through financial education.

While I was volunteering I met a woman who happened to live in the same building as my aunt. Unemployed with two young children, and a husband earning minimum wage at a fast food restaurant, she struggled to get by every day. I thought to myself – many in my community are just like her. Then I realized I could do something to help. How? I can start a financial literacy program, which teaches Hispanic women to earn and manage money. Once a woman becomes financially literate, she is capable of making good personal and professional decisions, empowering her to improve her family’s financial well-being. Moreover, such a program will help Hispanic women become competitive employees, even in a slow recovering economy such as the one we are experiencing now.

Participating in the 2013 Women’s World Banking Global Meeting in Amman, Jordan gives me access to invaluable resources that will help me achieve this goal. I hope to find mentors from a roomful of inspiring, experienced leaders who will offer me their guidance. Also, meeting accomplished women from other countries means access to new ideas and unique perspectives. And if I am lucky, I may even come across individuals who can provide financial support to jumpstart my financial literacy program for Hispanic women. Lastly, I will tell my idea to everyone I meet in Jordan, a baby step to help Hispanic women rise from poverty.

The world continues to change rapidly, especially with globalization. It is about time that Hispanic women strive for gender equality. Thus, it is essential that Hispanic women increase their roles and knowledge in finance. The women in my neighborhood shall no longer be left out. I will task myself to help these women become better, stronger and most importantly, take control of their lives. I want to be involved so that they can save themselves from any unforeseen financial crisis. This is a tremendous goal, but for me, it is an opportunity to make a difference – in my neighborhood and for my Spanish community.”

5 Crucial Essay Writing Tips for College and Scholarship Applications

There are tons of essay writing tips we could share with you on how to write amazing essays and improve your writing process. But, in this section, we’ll share just 5 of the tips we think are most important. For even more tips, you can check out our ultimate essay writing guide on how to write scholarship essays !

#1 Tell a story about yourself related to the prompt

Remember, admissions officers and scholarship selection committees are going to read hundreds, if not thousands, of essays all responding to the same writing prompt. The only way to truly make sure your essay stands out is to write about something no one else can write about. And the only way to do that is to structure your essay around a unique story from your life!

#2 Start your essay with a strong hook statement

We know we already said it. But we have to emphasize the importance of a hook introduction again! Because it’s a common mistake for college and high school students to start their introduction paragraph with something like, “I’m deserving of this scholarship because…”

But that type of opening sentence is boring. It’s predictable. And it just screams that you didn’t even try to be creative. We know you don’t want that. So, start your essay strong using one of the writing techniques mentioned in the video we shared earlier in this article.

#3 Use descriptive language

Another way to keep your readers engaged is to use descriptive language that forces them to use their imagination. This is what it means to show rather than tell.

For example, instead of saying something like, “I felt scared to give a speech in front of my class” you can describe exactly how it felt. How? By saying something like, “as soon as I got to the front of the class, I could feel the hairs stand up on the back of my neck and my palms begin to sweat. But I took a long sip of water and told myself I just needed to focus on one word at a time.”

When you show what you mean using descriptive writing rather than simply tell, you let readers see things from your perspective. And, as a result, you get them to root for you along your journey!

#4 Stick to the word count

As you may have noticed in the example essays, you don’t always need to write exactly 500 words. You should do your best to get close to that word count. But it’s no problem if you write less as long as it’s within the recommended word count.

However, what you definitely cannot do is write more than 500 words. Why not? Well, for one, writing too many words might make your reader think that you don’t know how to follow instructions.

It might also be impossible to input more than 500 words for your essay if you’re applying online. So, if the prompt asks for 500 words, aim to write somewhere between 400-500 words!

#5 Don’t submit your first draft

Your first draft for any essay will never be your best draft. And that’s okay. It isn’t supposed to be. That’s why it’s important to give yourself enough time to proofread and edit your work before you submit your applications.

We recommend using writing and editing tools like Grammarly , reading your essay aloud, and letting someone else proofread. By doing so, you’re more likely to catch grammar and spelling mistakes, confusing sentences, or anything that can leave readers with a bad impression.

Key Takeaways

Writing a 500 word essay for college and scholarship applications is not the same as writing an academic paper for high school and college classes.

The essays you write for these applications should be engaging and tell an interesting story. To do that well, you’re better off avoiding the standard essay format that calls for an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.

Instead, follow the advice we’ve shared in this blog post and make sure your essay includes:

  • A hook introduction
  • Examples that showcase your strengths

If you follow that formula, you’ll be on your way to writing better college and scholarship essays!

Physics Of A Roller Coaster Essay

physics essay 500 words

Show More Roller coasters have become one of American’s favorite amusements. Theme parks are more popular now than ever thanks to the exhilarating, fast-pace, “stomach in your shoes” rides known as roller coasters. For one to understand the fears as well as the thrill, one must first understand that it all comes from physics. Science plays a role in how we experience theme parks. Science creates the thrill in roller coasters, as well as real life experiences. According to the text, "Amusement park physics with a NASA twist", by Joe Schwartz, "science explains the thrills one experiences on a roller coaster and other rides. An amusement park is a great place to study motion and forces, and something different called microgravity (Source 1, Paragraph 2). …show more content… According to “Amusement Park Physics: What are the forces behind the fun?” states, after a brief period in which the riders are suspended in the air, the car suddenly drops and begins to accelerate toward the ground under the influence of earth’s gravity (Source 2, Paragraph 16). Gravity is the traditional source of power for roller coaster, accelerating the cars throughout the entire ride. It’s what allows you to crawl up the hill, hold for suspense, and then drop which triggers all screams. Without it, roller coasters would be nothing but boring. In order for the end result to be fun, safety must be imposed. Annenberg Learner mentions that amusement park rides use physical laws to stimulate danger, while the rides themselves are typically very safe (Source 2, Paragraph 7). Although the ride may seem risky and dangerous in the moment, it’s actually most likely safer than an everyday activity. The cases of roller coaster misconduct are very rare. Roller coasters are quiet a safe activity that will continue to gain popularity as technology continues to

I loved each one, irrespective of the number of loops it had or how fast it went. However, this changed when I got on one called the drop-tower. As the name suggests, it was a monstrous tower that carries riders up in a gondola to the top of the tower and then suddenly the gondola drops down. In seconds, it dropped me 100 feet down in the air, as I heard the echoes of a hundred-people screaming.…

Energy Conservation Essay

Importance of Energy Conservation

First of all, energy conservation plays an important role in saving non-renewable energy resources. Furthermore, non-renewable energy sources take many centuries to regenerate. Moreover, humans consume energy at a faster rate than it can be produced. Therefore, energy conservation would lead to the preservation of these precious non-renewable sources of energy.

Energy conservation will reduce the expenses related to fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are very expensive to mine. Therefore, consumers are required to pay higher prices for goods and services. Energy conservation would certainly reduce the amount of fossil fuel being mined. This, in turn, would reduce the costs of consumers.

Consequently, energy conservation would strengthen the economy as consumers will have more disposable income to spend on goods and services.

Energy conservation is good for scientific research. This is because; energy conservation gives researchers plenty of time to conduct researches.

Therefore, these researchers will have more time to come up with various energy solutions and alternatives. Humans must ensure to have fossil fuels as long as possible. This would give me enough time to finding practical solutions.

Another important reason for energy conservation is environmental protection. This is because various energy sources are significantly harmful to the environment. Furthermore, the burning of fossil fuels considerably pollutes the atmosphere. Moreover, nuclear energy creates dangerous nuclear waste. Hence, energy conservation will lead to environmental protection.

Energy conservation would also result in the good health of humans. Furthermore, the pollution released due to energy sources is harmful to the human body. The air pollution due to fossil fuels can cause various respiratory problems. Energy sources can pollute water which could cause several harmful diseases in humans. Nuclear waste can cause cancer and other deadly problems in the human body.

Measures to Conserve Energy

Energy taxation is a good measure from the government to conserve energy. Furthermore, several countries apply energy or a carbon tax on energy users. This tax would certainly put pressure on energy users to reduce their energy consumption. Moreover, carbon tax forces energy users to shift to other energy sources that are less harmful.

Building design plays a big role in energy conservation. An excellent way to conserve energy is by performing an energy audit in buildings. Energy audit refers to inspection and analysis of energy use in a building. Most noteworthy, the aim of the energy audit is to appropriately reduce energy input.

Another important way of energy conservation is by using energy-efficient products. Energy-efficient products are those that use lesser energy than their normal counterparts. One prominent example can be using an energy-efficient bulb rather than an incandescent light bulb.

In conclusion, energy conservation must be among the utmost priorities of humanity. Mahatma Gandhi was absolutely right when he said, “the earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs but not every man’s greed”. This statement pretty much sums up the importance of energy conservation. Immediate implementation of energy conservation measures is certainly of paramount importance.
