Good news! Students are permitted to use a four-function (with square root), scientific, or graphing calculator on the AP Bio exam, as well as the AP Biology Equations and Formulas Sheet .

The AP Bio Formula Sheet is actually two pages of formulas and definitions you may need during the exam. It is available at the beginning of both sections, so you’ll have access to it for the entire duration of the exam. This means you won’t need to memorize the 23 formulas included, nor the meanings of the different symbols used in formulas.

You’ll have 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete the AP Bio exam, which is divided into two sections:

• 60 questions, including both individual questions and sets of questions with 4-5 questions per set that all refer to the same diagram or data presentation
• 1 Hour 30 Minutes (90 minutes)
• 50% of exam score
• 6 Free Response Questions (FRQ): 2 long questions (worth 8-10 points each) and 4 short questions (worth 4 points each)

Section I questions are designed to test your ability to:

• Explain biological concepts, processes, and models
• Analyze diagrams, flow charts, and other visual representations
• Use the scientific method
• Perform mathematical calculations to analyze data (this is where the nifty AP Bio formula sheet will come in handy!)
• Support scientific claims with evidence

Section 2 questions will test your ability to:

• Interpret and evaluate results from an experiment
• Graph and analyze data
• Understand the principles and procedures of lab investigations
• Predict the causes or effects of a change in a biological system
• Analyze a visual representation of a biological phenomenon

While most students are familiar with a multiple-choice exam structure, the AP Bio FRQ can be a bit more daunting for many students. Fortunately, the College Board allows you to access free response questions from past exams , along with scoring guidelines and sample responses from exam takers.

Here’s an example of a short FRQ from 2023—one estimated to take about 10 minutes to answer:

Sand lances of the genus Ammodytes are small fish that function as keystone organisms in several coastal ecosystems. These sand lances are prey fish that support organisms at higher trophic levels. Scientists performed experiments to examine how sand lance populations are likely to be affected by the rising temperatures and CO 2 levels associated with climate change.

Sand lance embryos typically develop and mature into adult fish at low temperatures (approximately 5°C) and stable, low CO 2 levels (approximately 400 μatm). Over the course of two years, the scientists measured the survival rate of sand lance embryos allowed to develop and mature in a laboratory at three different temperatures, 5°C, 7°C, and 10°C, with the level of CO 2 maintained at 400 μatm, 1,000 μatm, and 2,100 μatm for each temperature.

(a) Describe the effect of increased biodiversity on the resilience of an ecosystem in a changing environment.

(b) Justify the scientists’ selecting 5°C as the lowest temperature and 400 μatm as the lowest CO 2 level in their study of sand lance embryo survival.

(c) State a null hypothesis for the experiment.

(d) The scientists claim that a reduction in the population size of the Ammodytes sand lances will affect the stability of the entire coastal ecosystem. Provide reasoning to support the scientists’ claim.

The College Board provides a number of strategies for answering the free response questions , including monitoring your time appropriately and reading through all questions first to determine which ones you feel most prepared to answer.

Section I (multiple-choice) is scored by machine. Scores are based on the number of questions answered correctly. No points are deducted for incorrect answers, so don’t leave any questions blank! It’s always better to at least hazard a guess.

Section II (Free Response) is evaluated and scored by trained AP readers hired by the College Board . Rubrics are provided by the College Board after the exams are administered.

After your raw scores from Sections I and II are calculated, the scores are combined to produce the composite score. The composite score is converted to a scaled score from 1-5.

What is the average Score on AP Bio?

In 2023, 239,470 students sat for the AP Bio exam . The mean score was 3.04. It is also important to consider the overall score distributions, which show that an encouraging 64.42% of students scored a 3 or higher. While this statistic speaks more to students’ preparedness than the exam itself, it does mean that aiming for a 3 or higher is a realistic goal.

We recommend establishing a target score before sitting for the exam, and reviewing previous score distributions (from 2023 and beyond ) can help you with this process.

While a 5 is the best AP score, it is important to establish your individualized target score before the exam. Depending on various factors, including your college and major aspirations, your AP course load, and your anticipated AP exam schedule, you may determine that your target score is actually a 3 or a 4.

You agree that we may charge any credit card number provided for your account for such amounts. You further agree that you will not dispute such a charge and that we retain the right to collect any additional actual costs.

User Contributions

For any academic source materials such as textbooks and workbooks which you submit to us in connection with our online tutoring services, you represent and warrant that you are entitled to upload such materials under the “fair use” doctrine of copyright law. In addition, if you request that our system display a representation of a page or problem from a textbook or workbook, you represent and warrant that you are in proper legal possession of such textbook or workbook and that your instruction to our system to display a page or problem from your textbook or workbook is made for the sole purpose of facilitating your tutoring session, as “fair use” under copyright law.

You agree that we may record all or any part of any live online classes and tutoring sessions (including voice chat communications) for quality control and other purposes. You agree that we own all transcripts and recordings of such sessions and that these Terms of Use will be deemed an irrevocable assignment of rights in all such transcripts and recordings to us.

We are not responsible or liable to any third party for the content or accuracy of any User Contributions posted by you or any other user of the Website.

Monitoring and Enforcement: Termination

We have the right to:

• Remove or refuse to post any User Contributions for any or no reason in our sole discretion.
• Take any action with respect to any User Contribution that we deem necessary or appropriate in our sole discretion, including if we believe that such User Contribution violates the Terms of Use, including the Content Standards, infringes any intellectual property right or other right of any person or entity, threatens the personal safety of users of the Website or the public, or could create liability for the Company.

Advanced Placement (AP)

AP Biology is known for being one of the tougher AP exams , and, for most students, the free-response section is the hardest part of the test. In 2021 , the average score for every free-response question was less than a 50%! However, knowing what to expect can make it easier to get a great score on AP Biology FRQ. And in this guide, we explain everything you need to know to ace this section. Read on to learn the format of AP Biology FRQ, what graders are looking for, what the questions will look like, and what you can do to be well-prepared on exam day.

What's the Format of the AP Biology Free Response Section?

The AP Biology exam has two sections: multiple choice and free response. The free-section comes second and contains six questions:

• Two long-response questions , both with a focus on analyzing experimental results. The second long question will require you to create a graph.
• Four short-answer questions on the following topics in this order:
• Scientific Investigation
• Conceptual Analysis
• Analysis of Model or Visual Representation
• Analysis of Data

Additionally:

• The free-response section is 90 minutes long
• It's worth 50% of your total score
• You're able to use the AP Biology formula sheet for the entire section

Long questions are worth 8-10 points each, whereas short-answer questions are each worth 4 points. It's recommended that you spend about 25 minutes on each long question and about 10 minutes on each short question (although you'll decide yourself how long you spend on each question).

The AP Biology test expects you to know how to:

• Understand how graphical and mathematical models can be used to explain biological principles and concepts
• Make predictions and justify events based on biological principles
• Implement your knowledge of proper experimental design
• Interpret data

AP Biology Sample Free Response Questions 

Now we'll go through two AP Biology free response example questions: one long question and one short question. These questions both were used for the 2021 AP Biology exam . You can see answers and scoring for each of the 2021 AP Biology FRQs here .

Long Question

First let's look at one of the long questions. This is Question 2, so remember you'll need to create a graph for at least one part of it. The entire question is worth 8 points.

Part A (1 point)

Part B (4 points)

First, you need to create a graph based on the data in Table 1. The graph is worth 3 points: 1 for axis labels, 1 for the correct plotting in the bar graph, and 1 for the error bars. Here's an example of a graph that would get full points:

Part C (1 point)

Part D (2 points)

• The data do not support the claim because females III-2 and III-6 have the disorder and, if inheritance was X-linked recessive, they'd only have the disorder if their father II-1 had the disorder, which he does not.
• The data supports mitochondrial inheritance because all of the offspring of individual II-2 , not just the sons, have the disorder.

Giving one of those answers is worth one point.

Short Question

Next is a short question. It's question 3 in the free-response section which means it will focus on scientific investigation. It's worth a total of four points.

Part B (1 point)

• The researchers must run the experiment without adding resveratrol.
• The researchers must treat the cells with DMSO alone.

There are two potential answers; you only need to include one:

• No ATP production
• Reduced ATP production

Part D (1 point)

For Part D, you must state that more electrons can be transferred so that more oxygen is required as the final electron acceptor.

Where to Find AP Biology FRQs

Taking practice tests and answering practice questions is one of the best ways to prepare for any AP exam, including AP Biology FRQs. Fortunately, the College Board, who creates and administers AP courses and exams, has made dozens of old AP Bio FRQs available for free online. Because there are so many official FRQs available, we recommend only using them instead of looking online for unofficial questions (those not created by the College Board), which can be hit or miss in terms of quality. Additionally, the AP Biology Course and Exam Description includes two up-to-date FRQs, beginning on page 206.

Note that, until 2020, the AP Bio exam had six short-answer questions instead of the current four. This means that questions from 2019 and earlier will have a different format and slightly different content. They can still be useful to study, but be aware of the differences between them and the current free-response section.

4 Tips for AP Biology FRQs

When you're studying for AP Bio FRQs and actually taking the exam, there are a lot of things to remember to ensure you do your absolute best. Keep these four tips in mind throughout the year and on exam day.

#1: Know Your 13 Required Labs

There are 13 labs you're required to complete during the AP Biology course. Questions that relate at least in part to these labs make up 25% of the AP Biology exam. It’s important to understand how these labs are conducted and how the principles behind them relate to the main ideas of the course. This will help in answering both free-response and multiple-choice questions that deal with lab scenarios on the test. You should also know general lab skills. Many free-response questions ask you to identify the components of a proposed experiment (dependent and independent variables) or to design a lab to test a certain hypothesis. You might have forgotten about the labs you did toward the beginning of the year, so take extra care to go over them. Make sure that you understand just how they were conducted and what the results mean.

#2: Eliminate Irrelevant Information

Free-response AP Biology questions (especially the long questions) include lots of scientific terminology and visual aids, and this kind of format might be intimidating if you’re not used to it. It’s important to practice sorting through this jumble of information so that you can quickly get to the root of the question rather than obsessing over small details you don’t understand.

Try underlining important words and phrases in the question to help you stay focused on the main points and avoid misleading distractions.

You should also practice responding to free-response questions in a straightforward way without any unnecessary fluff. Remember, this isn’t an English test; the graders are just looking for clear facts and analysis. Make it easy for them to give you points!

#3: Draw During Studying

If you're feeling shaky on your knowledge of a process or system in AP Biology, one helpful strategy is to draw it. This will both reinforce what you know and highlight what you still need to work on learning. Once you're able to draw an accurate diagram of a system or process without looking at your notes, you can feel confident that you know exactly how it works.

For example, you could challenge yourself to draw a diagram of a cell membrane, label its different components, and explain their significance. You could also draw a process like mitosis that happens in clear visual stages, or a more complex process like cellular respiration where you might focus on one aspect at a time (glycolysis, Krebs cycle, electron transport chain). You can also apply this tip during the exam, if you need help visualizing part of an AP Bio FRQ.

#4: Pay Attention to the Clock

Time is always tight on AP exams. For the AP Biology free response section, you get 90 minutes to answer six questions. It can be easy to get caught up on one question and suddenly realize you're nearly out of time but haven't had a chance to look at some of the questions, let alone answer them. Don't let this happen to you! We recommend spending 25 minutes on each of the two long questions and 10 minutes on each of the four short questions. You don't need to keep perfectly to that plan, but don't get too far off it, either. 

At the very least, make note of where you are halfway through the free-response section (that's 45 minutes in). If you're roughly halfway finished with the section (taking into account that long questions take about twice as much time to complete as short questions), you're doing well. If you're significantly behind that, you know you need to pick up the pace.

Also, don't feel you need to answer the FRQ in the order they're listed. We recommend skimming through each of the questions at the start of the section, then tackling the questions that seem easiest first so you can spend more time on trickier questions.

Summary: Acing the AP Biology Free Response Section

The AP Biology free-response section can be tough, but if you prepare well for it, you can go into exam day confident and knowing what to expect. The section consists of two long questions and four short questions, lasts 90 minutes, and is worth half of your total score. You'll need to create a graph for the second AP biology FRQ. Old exam questions are a great study resource and, when you're preparing for the free-response section, keep these four tips in mind:

AP® scores exist on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the best score you can get on an exam. Any AP® score greater than or equal to a 3 constitutes “passing,” which here just means that it becomes eligible for college credit (although each school will have different policies on what scores they accept and what those exams can be applied towards in their common core curriculum). So, as far as passing goes, a 3 is sufficient.

Even though a 3, a 4, and a 5 are all proficient, there is still a rough correlation between each grade and a letter one, in the same way that a C and an A are both passing a class, but one may demonstrate a more firm mastery of the material than the other. As per the College Board , a 5 corresponds to an A+ or an A, a 4 to a A-, B+, or B, and a 3 to a B-, C+, or C, all of which they describe as “qualified.” A C sounds bad, but know that for 2023’s score distributions on the year’s exam, only 16.9% of students scored a 5, so don’t be harsh on yourself if you don’t get one, even though we’ll try to help you get there!

The exams are meant to be challenging and represent entry-level college work, and the fact that you’re taking them at all says something about your commitment to high-quality education and college readiness!

How should I understand my AP® Biology Score if I don’t get a 3?

Any AP® score is useful, even if it isn’t “good,” which is a subjective term. There is evidence to suggest that even an AP® score of a 1 or 2, which is not enough to earn college credit, still helps students feel prepared for their classes when they begin college compared to students who do not engage in the AP® program. Students who complete AP® exams are also more likely to attend college in general, and are more likely to graduate on time (depending on the school, anywhere from 4-6 years).

While it is true that with an AP® score of a 1 or a 2 you can’t receive college credit, your experience in taking the course has given you a good glimpse of what intro-level college work will require of you, and it may even give you a leg up over your peers when you start your college journey! The skills of time management, good studying habits, and discipline you build up leading up to an AP® exam will help you in college regardless of what score you get.

Additionally, while many of you undoubtedly have some idea of what you want to study in college, some of you do not yet, and even for those of you who do, you never know when the knowledge you gained in an AP® course will help you understand a problem or context for something.

How does this 📈 ap pre-calculus score calculator work.

Exam sections and scoring

• Every AP subject has standardized sections on the exam. They usually include multiple choice and free response questions.
• Each section is worth some number of points based on 1) the number of questions and 2) sometimes a scoring rubric. Each section also has a different weight on your final score.

Is it accurate?

Yes! The weights of the score + the points possible are very accurate, based on info from the Course & Exam Descriptions and Scoring Guidelines from the 2023 AP exams.

The one area that can’t be perfectly accurate is how we determined the final predicted scores (College Board doesn’t publish the “cut points” for each scores.)

We used old released exams and other calculators to estimate “if you earned this % of points, you would earn this score”:

• 75% or more = 5

These are meant to be benchmarks to give a rough idea of where you might fall, but the actual numbers are adjusted each year to be based on the curve. We’re probably pretty close though.

How are the 📈 AP Pre-Calculus exams scored?

• Multiple Choice questions are graded with a computer, those are super easy to grade quickly.
• Some teachers do this remotely and grade online, others are physically in person reading essays. They sit together at tables in huge conference centers for ~1 week to go through every single essay.
• These educators are truly rooting for you to get as many points as you can. When there is a high scoring essay, the table quietly celebrates 🥳
• Total scores for multiple choice and free response are combined, then translated into a 5-point scale.

What is a good score on the 📈 AP Pre-Calculus exam?

It’s all relative (really). We tend to think your score matters far less in the long run, so there really isn’t such thing as a “bad score”.  Taking the test and going through the process is correlated with going to and doing better in college.

Technically, a “3” is considered passing because it’s the lowest score that can earn college credit. Some colleges require 4s or 5s. And some (elite) colleges don’t give credit at all.
