In Remembrance Of

Jan Egerton battled mesothelioma for over 10 years and during that time she dedicated her life to raising awareness of the dangers of asbestos and to championing the researchers to continue to focus on finding a cure and new treatments for the cancer.

Jan’s husband said, “I know Jan would be delighted to have this accolade, and I would be honoured for you to use Jan’s name. This is a legacy of which she would be proud.”

Don Smitley  spent his days enjoying time with his family, his dog, Charley, and playing in his bluegrass band, The Dunbar Boys.

No one ever heard Don complain or wonder, “Why me?” while he fought mesothelioma. But everyone that knew him would say that faith and a positive attitude carried him through each day.

Don’s daughter, Jennifer Gelsick, chronicled her family’s journey during mesothelioma, and now discusses life after  losing a loved one to mesothelioma  through her blog.

“We are so honored to have Dad’s name on the scholarship. It’s such a perfect way to remember and honor him,” said Jennifer. Jennifer will is one of the essay judges.

Essay Topic

Mesothelioma is a terminal cancer diagnosed in close to 3,000 Americans each year.

The only established cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Most victims were unwittingly exposed to asbestos at work or while serving in the military.

Still others developed mesothelioma through exposure from family members coming home from work with their clothes covered in asbestos fibers.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the annual number of mesothelioma deaths is increasing.

According to experts, over 20 million people in the United States are at risk of developing malignant mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure .

We believe it is important to get the facts out about mesothelioma and asbestos exposure , and especially, to help educate young Americans.

Please address some or all of the following questions in your essay:

  • Share your personal story dealing with asbestos disease or cancer. Talk about how it affected your life and how/whether it impacted your education/career choice.
  • What do you hope to do with the education you are receiving to help cancer patients?
  • Why is raising awareness and educating the public about the dangers of asbestos and the impact of mesothelioma on a family important?
  • What would you say to someone who is fighting mesothelioma or to a family member who recently lost a loved one to the disease?

Notification

The essay must be no fewer than 750 and no more than 1,500 words long.

  • Essays will be judged by Jennifer Gelsick, former caregiver for her father, Don Smitley, who passed away from mesothelioma in October 2013, and Lisa Hyde-Barrett, a thoracic surgery nurse.
  • Submissions will be judged on content, correctness of facts, grammar, style, and originality.
  • Judges will look for clear, original essays that are logically organized and well-supported.

The judges will select the top 4 essays through the criteria listed above.

A page will be created on MesotheliomaHelp.org for the essays. A link to the essays will be provided to the finalists when they are notified of their placement.

The top four winners will be notified on the dates found.

Now, we want to hear about your experience, how it affected you and how we can help.

“When I got sick, our world as we knew it crumbled. I had to quit my job as a salon owner and stylist and concentrate on treatment. Our income was instantly cut. Cameron, my husband, knew that he had to get his degree to do better for our family, including our newborn child.

Furthering one’s education is something cam and i are incredibly passionate about, and we know from experience how hard it is to balance family, jobs and school (not to mention a wife who’s fighting cancer). but while it can be difficult, the rewards are too numerous to count. hopefully, this scholarship can give a little extra help to someone in a time of need.”.

The Mesothelioma Scholarship Initiative 2021-2022 Winners

Mesothelioma Hub is pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural Mesothelioma Scholarship Initiative . This scholarship opportunity was open to students currently enrolled in a two-year or four-year college, university, or trade school in the United States. The goal of this program was to raise awareness about the dangers of mesothelioma and highlight its far-reaching consequences.

Although mesothelioma is often looked at as a disease that only affects the elderly, people often forget that younger individuals, like family and friends, also suffer from the consequences of mesothelioma. That’s why in an effort to reach a wider audience, we asked college students to submit essays that either promoted mesothelioma awareness, highlighted a personal experience, or demonstrated relevant information about the causes or risk factors of mesothelioma. This resulted in many qualified applicants with compelling essays, but there could only be one $1,000 winner.

Economics, student government: azcentral.com's Student of the Week for April 8-12

All high schools in Arizona are invited to nominate students to be included in an online poll where azcentral.com readers vote to choose the Student of the Week.

Student of the Week voting is open from 6 a.m. Monday through noon Thursday. Each week's winner is announced online Friday at 6 a.m.

Meet this week's nominees!

How to nominate: Know a teen we should celebrate? Choose them for Arizona Student of the Week

Nomination submitted by Deanna Potter, principal, Florence High School.

Martin Jadoun, freshman, BASIS Mesa

In competitive swimming, Martin Jadoun has consistently excelled, earning numerous medals at state-level competitions across all charter schools in Arizona. His dedication to the sport and hard work, combined with relentless training and determination, have propelled him to stand out among his competition.

Martin's interest in economics extends beyond the classroom, as evidenced by his impressive critical thinking challenge in which he placed in the top three in the state, along with his journey to the final round on the state level of Rockonomix, an economics music video parody competition. In addition to Martin's hard work and dedication, he also spends time coaching students in swim lessons and at church.
