3 Tips For a Successful Application

Hej everyone! Welcome to this new post. The journey to becoming a KTH student begins with your application, and making it shine can be a game-changer. In this blog post, I’ll guide you through my application tips that will help you stand out from the crowd and and get you one step closer to securing your spot at KTH.

Tip 1: Start Early

Embarking on your KTH application journey should begin well in advance. Here’s why getting a head start is crucial:

a. Reference Letters and Document Translations: Don’t underestimate the time required for gathering reference letters from professors or employers and translating your academic documents. KTH typically expects two academic reference letters. Be sure to choose individuals who can provide a meaningful insight into your qualifications and potential. Additionally, make sure your transcripts and certificates are accurately translated if they are not in English.

b. Meeting Deadlines: KTH has strict application deadlines. By starting early, you can submit your application well before the due date (15 January). This not only alleviates stress but also allows you ample time for review and revisions. *Remember documents can be submitted after your application is submitted. The due date to submit your documents is 1 February.

Tip 2: Match the Programme Requirements

KTH offers a diverse range of programmes, each with unique prerequisites and expectations. Of course, you may be interested in more than one programme but it is important to remember that you will only be offered a place in one programme, which is also due to the fact that there are limited spots in each programme. To ensure your application aligns perfectly with your chosen programme, follow these steps:

a. Understand Admission Requirements: Carefully review the admission requirements for your specific programme, available on the programme’s webpage.

b. Customise Your Application: Your application materials should reflect how well you meet the programme’s requirements. Highlight your academic achievements, relevant coursework, and experience that demonstrates your suitability for the programme.

c. Reinforce Your Motivation Letter and Summary Sheet: The motivation letter is a vital part of your application, offering a chance to convey why you’re the perfect candidate for the programme.

Tip 3. Allow Your Personality to Shine Through

Beyond academic qualifications, there is often value to students who bring unique experiences and a dynamic personality to campus. Don’t hesitate to let your individuality shine through:

a. Share Your Interests and Experiences: It’s always interesting to know who you are outside the classroom. Are you passionate about certain activities? Have you had cool and transformative experiences? Include these in your application to help the admissions officers get to know the real you.

b. Highlight What Makes You Unique: Use your application to showcase what makes you stand out from the crowd. Maybe it’s an extraordinary hobby, a community project you initiated, or a personal experience that shaped your goals. These elements can differentiate you and demonstrate your potential contributions to the KTH community.

Overall, by starting early, tailoring your application to meet programme requirements, and allowing your personality to shine through, you can create a holistic application that is attractive to the admissions committee. Remember to check KTH’s website for specific programme details and deadlines and, if needed, reach out to student ambassadors, University Admissions or [email protected] for guidance. I wish you the best of luck with your application!

What is a summary sheet, while applying as an international student for masters at KTH.

Hej! A summary sheet is a form that you will have to fill out as part of an application that includes courses that you have taken in your bachelor that are related to the master you are applying to. The summary sheet is only required for some programmes. Please check entry requirements for the programme that you are applying to see if you need to submit a summary sheet.

Application Suggestions

How and when to apply, questions and who to contact, important components of an application.

  • Your CV is important and you should spend time writing a good one. A CV is an outline of facts that reflect your academic and professional life, as well as other important events such as awards, publications, and other relevant accomplishments. It should not just be a list of courses you have taken, as that information is available from your transcripts. There are a number of excellent guides to writing a good CV available on the internet, and it would be worth your time to read one or more of them. Be sure that your CV mentions all practical work experience you have had including internships or other employment.  This includes volunteer work as well. A typical CV will be about 1 or 2 pages long, and should give an honest outline of who you are, and will help the reader understand why you are unique.
  • Your letter of motivation is extremely important.  To me, it is possibly the most important component of your application. A good letter of motivation will explain why you want to be admitted into the Master's program you have selected, and why you to want to pursue further study in your chosen area. The motivation letter should also explain what skills you have, and what you can do.  It should help the reader understand why you think you will be successful in the program. This is important because simply stating that you are a good student, or extolling other personal virtues do not in themselves show what is driving your interest in a program, or why you will do well in that program. There are a lot of good students out there, so it is important to convey what skills you have, and what you know how to do that will help you succeed in the program.  Your letter should be well thought out, completely honest, and focused on the program.  Most students will be applying to several programs at different schools, so there is a temptation to write a very general letter that can be sent to all the schools with appropriate wording changes.  I suggest that you don't do this, but instead put the effort into writing a focused letter for each program and school you are applying to.  Do not copy content from the internet into your letter, or put anything else in it that you did not write entirely yourself. A typical letter of motivation is about one page long.
  • Reference letters can be a help if you get them from the right people.  A good reference letter is an honest assessment from another person that explains why you should be accepted into the program.  The best letters will be written by people from your school or from a place you have worked at, and who know you and your abilities well. The person writing the reference should be specific and honest in explaining why they think you should be accepted, and should give examples of situations that support the reasons they are giving. The rank or status of the person writing the letter is not important.  What is important is that they are not related to you, and really know something about you and what you can do that is relevant to your potential success in the program.  Your best choices are instructors you have taken several classes from, and who know you well, or from job supervisors you have had who are familiar with your abilities and performance.

Hi there. If you read my previous post on the changes with the SISGP scholarship , then you might be in the process of submitting your scholarship motivation letter. One of the most frequently asked questions from you has been how to make your scholarship motivation letter stand out because let’s face it, the SISGP scholarship ↗️ is a very competitive scholarship and to get it, your motivation letter has to stand out. Here are 7 scholarship motivation letter tips based on my experience.

1. Motivation letters for universities VS. Scholarships

Anita gave a great guide on how you can be able to make a motivation letter for the university applications . There’s a subtle difference between writing a motivation letter for a university and writing a motivation letter for a scholarship. A motivation letter for the university admission will focus on why you are interested in learning at a certain university and taking a certain programme and should include your professional goals before, during and after the course. A motivation letter for the scholarship, however, would be entirely dependent on the type of scholarship you are applying for.

Two students studying.

2. What type of scholarship are you applying for?

Different scholarships will have different profiles of people they are looking for because each scholarship has specific goals. For example:

  • An academic scholarship would want you to demonstrate  an outstanding history of academic achievement in your motivation letter because their goal is to attract applications from outstanding students .
  • A scholarship that is being awarded to professionals will want your motivation to highlight your professional experience, past impact, professional aspirations and future impact because their goal is to attract applications from outstanding professionals who will create impact.
  • Scholarships for minorities will want you to demonstrate how you fulfil the ethnic requirements and may need you to highlight some challenges that you would like to solve in your current setup once you get the scholarship.

3. Start with Brainstorming

After clearly understanding WHO exactly your scholarship is looking for, it is time to evaluate yourself to see how you compare with the person they aim to attract. A simple exercise that can help you discover if you make a great fit for a scholarship is through having a brainstorming session. It could be with yourself or with a friend/colleague who knows about your academic and professional journey. Brainstorming can be done through questions such as:

  • What course have you applied for? How does it relate to your long term plan? How does it relate to the Scholarship goals?
  • What makes you unique?
  • What have you achieved so far? (Could be academic, professional based on the scholarship type)
  • What impact have you created so far?
  • What are your short and long term plans after getting the scholarship? How will the scholarship help you realise these plans?
  • What impact will this scholarship have for you and society?

4. Write this up in an easy to read format

One of the biggest tricks to stand out is to put yourself in the position of the person who is going through your application. They should have an easy understanding knowing who you are, what moves and motivates you, why you stand out from the rest and why you deserve the scholarship. The overall structure and format guidelines include:

  • One of the ways of making sure your motivation letter is easy to follow is to ensure that each paragraph communicates a specific point. This grounds and structures your writing and makes it easy to follow.
  • Avoid typos through the use of proof-reading tools such as Grammarly . ↗️ It is a no brainer that typos make you stand out less however, we are not perfect and a typo or grammar error may crop up after several edits of your letter. Using proof-reading tools helps you tighten the loose ends.

5. Be as precise as possible

Scholarship motivation letters will almost always have a word limit. It is therefore important that you are straight to the point and precise. One of the reasons motivation letters fail is because the writer is not precise and beats around the bush. It is best to ensure that you only include information that is relevant to the requirements listed for the scholarship since those are the only details that will be considered. This process needs you to be quite critical and practical.

6. Show, don’t tell

There are certain common words that can be fetched from any motivation letter. They include “Motivated.  Leader. Hardworking.” It is common for everyone to say that they are motivated and want to create a change and this is why you need to differentiate yourself through examples. You are motivated yes, but can you show or prove this? Here are 2 examples of how 2 candidates describing themselves that help to illustrate this.

“I believe that I am motivated and that getting this scholarship will allow me to fulfil my professional and personal goals as well as create an impact in my society”

“I plan to set up a women’s community education centre after I graduate to empower women with basic accounting skills to run small and medium-sized businesses. The scholarship and master programme will allow me to acquire skills that will help me to create tools and resources for their training”

See the difference? Who is more likely to be considered for the scholarship?

7. Go through your scholarship motivation letter over and over again.

It is important that the process of writing is done in cycles. After ensuring that step 1 to 6 is complete, you are ready to compile the first version of a motivation letter. Read it. Ask yourself, would you be convinced to give yourself a scholarship if you read what you have written? If not, tweak your application and revise it until you feel that what you have written is the best and cannot be changed. After doing this, ask your colleague to read it and ask for their opinion. You might be surprised how a different view of your application would allow you to add useful information that you may have left out before.

With these tips, I believe you are on your way to making sure that your scholarship motivation letter stick out. All the best in your applications!

PS: The application for SISGP scholarship ↗️ is currently open until 14th Feb so let’s get with it!

Motivation Letter Writing Guide + Examples for 2024

Background Image

Writing a motivational letter can be nerve-wracking.

When presented with the question of “Why would you like to be part of this organization?” you find yourself staring at a blank page, thinking of how to correctly word “ I'm passionate about going to college so I don’t starve to death. ”

Two hours and three coffees in, you’ve scrolled through your Facebook newsfeed (twice), watched one episode of the last season of Game of Thrones, sent angry tweets to its creators, and donated for the knee surgery of two dogs. You go back to your open Word doc and you have only managed to write: “This organization seems like fun” or “I’ll totally be a great fit” .

You know you are not this generic or basic. You’re a capable guy or gal who has a lot to offer and there are genuine reasons behind your decision to apply.

It’s just hard to put it into words… And we get that!

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of creating a motivation letter that gets you accepted anywhere.

  • What a Motivational Letter Is (And Why It Matters)

How to Structure a Motivational Letter

  • How to Write a Motivational Letter [+Some Helpful Tips to Get Those Ideas Out of Your Head and Into the Paper]
  • How (and Why) to Create a Motivational Letter With Novorésumé

What is a Motivational Letter and Why it Matters?

A motivational letter is a one-page letter that’s used to describe why you are the perfect candidate for a certain position . It is usually attached to your resume .

You are required to write a motivational letter in these 4 specific scenarios...

  • You are applying to get admitted to an educational program at a college or university (undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate).
  • You are applying to work at a non-profit organization.
  • You are applying as a volunteer in an organization.
  • You’re applying for an internship in a company.

The motivational letter shouldn’t be confused with a cover letter , the purpose of which is to highlight how specific information on your resume matches a job opening. Think of a cover letter as the introduction to your resume for a hiring manager and your motivational letter as the powerful closing sales pitch for a university or non-profit.

So why exactly does the motivational letter matter? You’re a doer more than a talker: you’ve listed everything there is to know about you on your resume. That should be enough, right? Wrong!

All organizations are looking for people who genuinely want to be there and are excited about what they do. The intent should be your driving motivation!

Writing a good motivational letter can be an absolute game-changer. It can provide a boost for your resume , but also make up for lacking required skills.

career masterclass

A good motivational letter is a one-pager where you introduce yourself, your story, and show your interest in the position or organization you are applying to.

There are two main ways to structure your motivational letter:

  • Using the classic 3 main paragraphs structure , where your motivational letter has the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.
  • Using the 5-7 paragraph structure , where you divide your main body paragraph into smaller 1-3 sentence paragraphs according to the main points.

Now, which one do YOU go for? The rule of thumb is if you want to be more factual and to the point, go for the 7-paragraph structure. This way, you can use each body paragraph to discuss specific achievements or points.

If, on the other hand, you’re going for a more story-telling approach, you’d go for the 3 paragraph option, so as not to break the flow of the story.

The Structure of a Motivational Letter

motivation letter structure

Whichever structure you go for, it should consist of 3 main parts: the introduction, body, and conclusion. Here’s what to include in each one:

Introduction: A short, engaging pitch about yourself and why you are applying. Here, you can include:

  • Personal information. Who are you and what do you do?
  • What are you applying for? Where?
  • An intro to the bulk of your essay. Mention the general reason on why you’re applying, and then deep-dive in the bulk of your motivational letter.

And of course, don’t forget to mention contact information on top.

For example:

To: School/Organization Name

First Name Last Name

[email protected]

Phone Number

Relevant Social Media (LinkedIn, Quora, GitHub, etc.)

Dear [Name of The Contact Person] ,

My name is [Your name] and I would like to express my interest in applying for the Doctoral program in political science at [University Name] . I’ve always dreamed of becoming a politician and helping give back to my country, and I believe that a Ph.D. in politics from [University Name] would set me miles ahead to reaching my goal.

Body of the Motivational Letter: this is the main bulk of your motivational letter. This is where you really sell yourself, mentioning stories behind your achievements, skills, and passion for whatever you’re applying for.

Try to be as factual as possible - anyone that frequently reads motivational letters can tell made-up stories from the real ones. When possible, you can also use metrics to back up your qualifications.

Things You Can Mention in Your Motivational Letter:

  • My passion for ______ started when ______.
  • I want to ______ because ______.
  • I have been part of _________ for ___ months/years. It’s the best thing for me because _______.
  • I remember once when I ________, which made me realize that I _______.
  • _______ resonates with me because _________.
  • What distinguishes me from my peers is __________.

I developed my passion for Online Marketing during my internship at [company name] . Working in a small startup allowed me to get surface-level experience in most digital marketing channels. Now, I would like to deep-dive and gain advanced know-how by attending the [university name] program in Digital Marketing.

Conclusion:

Finally, you can wrap up the motivational letter and send it in. In this section, you can:

  • Briefly summarize your main points - “ I believe I’d be a good fit for the program because of __________ ”
  • Mention your overarching goal - “I’d love to be a part of _______, as it would allow me to ___________.”
  • Thank the reader and conclude the motivational letter

Now that you know how to structure a motivational letter, let’s move on to the contents!

How to Write a Motivational Letter

So how do you write a motivational letter that stands out from the pool of applicants? The way to avoid generalizations and add depth to your motivational letter is by tailoring it to the specific organization and program/position you are applying to:

  • When writing a motivational letter, you want to make sure you know what and where you are applying to. Find out who is in charge of deciding your fate and address them directly in your opening remarks as Dear Mrs. Smith .
  • Look at the program requirements and the institution’s website. Find out the top three requirements for the position and explain how you are the best candidate.
  • Demonstrate that you share the organization’s values or are exceptionally qualified through a short story or personal examples. Be specific.
  • Your motivational letter should demonstrate that you really want to be there! There is a fine line between pleading and showing intelligent interest while also selling yourself. State specific reasons, demonstrate knowledge and express passion for applying to the institution or organization without showing off or begging.
  • DO NOT LIE! If you write anything remotely untrue, your reader will sense it. Unconsciously, we inflate feelings and ideas when we lie. If you tell a fake story or inflate your excitement or achievements, you will be put into the “lying Pinnochio pile” . Consider your case rested and your application denied.

Questions to Answer in Your Motivational Letter [+Possible Answers]

  • I would love to live in [ location of organization ], because ________.
  • It is my dream to be part of [ name of program ], because _________.
  • The values [ name of institution ] is based on are: [ three general values stated on their website ]. I have demonstrated _____ because I have ______ especially in ______. I also practice ______ in my professional or working life by __________.
  • Requirement: Minimum 2 years of volunteering experience

I volunteered in Africa for three years. It’s one of my most fulfilling experiences because I am passionate about helping others and came out a better person. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

  • Requirement: Passionate about research

I would pick a sleepless night conducting research instead of a night out anytime. I spend most of my mornings reading the last edition of the Journal of Marketing. I have worked on three separate research studies during my time at Colorado University.

  • Requirement: 3,80 GPA

Achieving a Magna Cum Laude required a lot of hard work and dedication, but education has been my biggest passion in life, so there was more joy than pain in the process!

Answer some/all of these questions in a compelling way that’s true to you and your experience, then turn them into a cohesive text.

An Example of a Great Motivational Letter

We’ll demonstrate how to write an awesome and inspiring motivational letter through Jane’s letter to the admissions team of Harvard University below. She is applying for a Ph.D. in the department of Political Science.

The general requirements are : being research inclined, a demonstrated passion for Politics, and an above average performance during undergraduate studies.

The values of the university are integrity, education, respect, and accountability.

She’s using the three paragraph structuring method.

You can see how Jane highlights through personal stories:

  • That she knows the history of the university and shares the same values
  • That she’s genuinely excited and passionate about the program and the school
  • What her qualifications are and how they’ll be a great fit for the program
  • What she hopes to achieve if given the opportunity to study at Harvard

The same rules and spirit apply to non-university related motivational letters as well.

You can easily notice that Jane has essentially given a personal story of all his qualifications. After reading this letter, the admissions team will feel like they know Jane, and this is what you should also aim to do: communicate who you are through highlighting your story tailored to the institution and program you are applying for.

How (and why) to Create a Motivational Letter with Novorésumé

Now that you know how to write a motivational letter, you can decide on how it looks.

A black and white letter sheet with Times New Roman, 12-pt font size might be great for a formal document, but it does not make you stand out in the pile of grey applications.

How can you appear professional without being boring? Novorésumé's motivational letter templates and intuitive editor add the tinge of personality that you’d need to stand out from the rest.

So, let’s sum up everything we’ve covered in this post:

  • A motivational letter is a formal letter which you need to write if you’re applying for university/college admissions, a non-profit, or a volunteering institution. Job applications usually require a cover letter instead.
  • There are two ways to structure a motivational letter: in three paragraphs (introduction, body, conclusion) or in 5-7 paragraphs (where each paragraph highlights a different point).
  • Introduce yourself and your intent in the introduction, describe and highlight your experiences in the body, and thank the reader for his/her consideration in the conclusion.
  • Do your research, show genuine interest, and never, ever lie.
  • If you want your motivational letter to stand out, Novorésumé takes the cake!

Sample Motivation Letter for Master’s Degree

Sample motivation letter for bachelor’s degree, sample motivation letter for study abroad, 1. motivation letter, 2. statement of purpose (sop), 3. cover letter, 4. personal statement, sample motivation letter for internship:, frequently asked questions.

It is a one-page long letter used to make a point about what makes you a perfect candidate for a certain position in a university or an organization. You will usually be asked to attach this document with your resume. Generally, a motivation letter is written in four specific scenarios listed below:

  • When you wish to apply for an educational program at a university.
  • When you are looking to apply to a non-profit organization (NGO).
  • When you want to work as a volunteer in an organization.
  • When you are seeking an internship in a company.

You must not confuse a motivation letter with a cover letter, whose purpose is to speak about specific information in your resume matching the job opening. A motivation letter should be rather seen as a strong closing pitch to your application, encompassing your resume, your achievement certificates, all documents related to your credentials and your cover letter.

One may wonder why this letter holds so much importance despite there being a well-informed resume.  The answer to that is, all organizations and universities are looking to filter through hundreds of applications to choose individuals with true passion that cannot be judged through a resume or a mark sheet. They want to finalise on people with real intent and excitement for the position.

Important Tips to Consider Before Writing a Motivational Letter

1. research well, be crisp and concise with information.

The basic rule to follow when writing a motivation letter is to have a detailed understanding of why you are writing a motivation letter. The requirements, prospects, and expectations of an application should be reflected in a letter of motivation.

This is one document in your application where you are allowed to be informal; use it and pen down your passion for the position and let the text reflect your personality and personal style. When you try to connect with your reader by sharing a sneak peek of your life, your thought process, and how you stand out. But be mindful of being original and not bragging or mentioning something out of exasperation. It’s a motivational letter, not a storytelling stunt of yours where you put yourself in the limelight and sideline every other essential thing. It is advisable to avoid ambiguous statements.

One should set priorities while writing a letter of motivation and offer the reader a glimpse of the content. A motivation letter should address successfully your intent without any merry-go-round statements. Get straight to the point and avoid rambling. Ensure that the document is no longer than an A-4 size page. Write the qualitative skills and achievements that are significant to your application and persuade your reader to comment with the feedback positively.

Purpose or intent should be fulfilled while writing a motivational letter, keeping in mind that you already have a CV/resume that furnishes all personal and professional information. You don’t need to rush with the information part that makes it look clumsy. Remember that the CV and the motivation letter must complement each other and should be in sync with one another in terms of the information you provide about yourself.

5. Avoid passing controversial statements

While writing a motivational letter, one must avoid political or ideological jargon and write in a neutral tone without taking sides. Writing about politics may sound humorous to some but can be offensive to some. You never know what another person has to offer when talking about such scenarios or ideas. One should avoid such conflict-laced topics when writing a motivation letter.

6. Art of Persuasion

Clearly explain what your motivation is and why you are a perfect fit for the position. Mention what puts you ahead of your competition and how you will add positive enhancement to the program. Read about the qualities sought by the recruiter and write about how they correspond to you. Highlight all your achievements and all that you are proud of without sounding arrogant.

It isn’t enough to just praise yourself randomly, support what you say, provide examples of your achievements, and try not to use run-of-the-mill phrases such as “quick to learn” or “super organized”. Being original will take you a long way.

While writing a motivation letter, you should know to whom to address the letter. The basic information like name, designation, address etc should be properly mentioned.

Structure of a Motivation Letter

Here is a structure that a candidate should follow to write a motivational letter-

In this section, you have to brief about yourself and showcase your purpose for writing the letter. You should give an outline of the content. Start your motivation letter with greetings like “Respected/Dear Sir/Madam” if no mention of a name is there, try to put a name if available to have a personal connection with the reader.

This section should include all your achievements and professional career induced with a timeline view. You must point out the reason and why you have chosen a particular course and what makes you pursue that particular career. Prove that your profile matches your candidacy for the application and present facts and figures relevant to your achievements.

You should mention relevant information regarding your choice of a subject, what is the reason, and what excellence you will achieve by pursuing this course. A persuasive tone should be followed while briefing your intent about the course.

When talking about long-term and short goals, you must have clarity about the goals you want to achieve in that specific timeline.

Short-term goals include your reason for commitment to the course, what framework you have made to pursue during the coursework, and what skills/specialization you have set to obtain during and after the course.

On the other hand, Long term goals should include your prospects, what you want in the long run of life and what motivates you to be consistent with your commitment towards it. Do not forget to mention what benefits you will reap.

An important part of a motivation letter is the conclusion, which creates an impact on the reader. While ending the motivational letter, an applicant should summarize the main points written in the letter and mention the main goal of the letter – to be accepted for the program. The final impression is as important as the first impression.

After writing your letter, ensure that it is error-free. Make it grammatically correct, with no room for spelling mistakes and ambiguous statements. Before sending it, proofread your letter many times and ensure its authenticity is maintained.

While writing a motivation letter, introduce yourself and your intent in the introduction. It is essential to provide a clear picture of yourself in the letter to ensure that it goes with the purpose.  In the body, highlight and describe your achievements. You should be mindful that it does not have long explanatory sentences. Conclude the letter by thanking the reader.

Mention all the essential points, and summarize your goals with all the interest that compels you to apply for that particular course of study. Showcase gratitude in advance. If you are accepted for this program, how you will take this opportunity to work and what contribution you will make to the university.

  • While your aspirations to study enthrals you with excitement, don’t get high on horses. Remember that certain setbacks should be avoided if rules are followed.
  • The letter should be addressed to the concerned person, and you must research properly before applying for the particular university.
  • Information regarding the requirements and essentials should be gathered while explaining your candidacy in the letter.
  • State your offerings, goals, and perspective that matches with the university and career you are opting for.

How to Write your Motivation Letter for Study Abroad

Universities abroad often have specific things they are looking for when asking you to write a motivation letter. It is indeed a challenging task to write one, where you may end up being either too formal, missing out on the chance to be creative or being too candid and failing to highlight important aspects of your personality. Additionally, there is extra pressure on students trying to compose a letter for an international audience.

However, there are some common characteristics that international admission offices look for in their candidates. You should be able to structure an impactful motivation letter if you simply include answers to the following questions:

While the answer may seem obvious to you, you need to make a valid argument to the admissions officers. Avoid saying that you wish to leave your country, you are doing it because your peers have done it or because you want to have an international degree to show off. Instead write about how you are interested in their culture and heritage, how you have always had a flair for communication and wish to be a part of a global student community or how you can contribute to a particular industry with a specific foreign degree.

Universities seek candidates who have experience of being far away from home. So, instead of bluntly stating that you have never lived abroad or that you have had bad experiences abroad, say that you are adaptable and have done enough research on the country to know that you will be able to settle there. Mention how you love to travel and new experiences and are keen on expanding your horizons.

Give examples of why you are meant to be a part of a global community and how much importance you give to social inclusivity and cultural sensitivity. Avoid mentioning if you are an extremely social or intensely reserved person, instead, write about your ability to fit into groups and your appreciation of various cultures.

Example of a Motivation Letter

Writing the perfect motivation letter can be a hard task, but if you know how to structure yours, it will be very easy for you to impress whoever is reading your motivation letter. A perfectly structured motivation letter can be written in two styles-

– The classic three-paragraph style with an introduction, body, and conclusion.

– The 5 to 7-paragraph style where the content of the main body is divided into multiple paragraphs.

The motivation letter should have a storytelling approach and not sound too mechanical and cliched. Try to decide on a particular series of arguments and stick to that without breaking the flow of the story.

Your pitch should be engaging so that the reader is hooked right from the introduction. Keep your letter brief but not too harsh around the edges. Express your achievements, interests, skills and experience, goals, and objectives without writing pages and pages.

There are specific things you need to mention when writing a motivation letter for a bachelor’s degree and a motivation letter for a master’s degree. You will find numerous samples online but choose to use one for reference that is the most relevant to your field.  Here we have attached one such example for you to refer to:

When you are applying for a master’s program, it is expected that you have already gained a sizable experience and knowledge about your field of choice from your graduate program. So, when you sit to compose a motivation letter for a master’s degree, mention all that your graduate-level education has taught you, how you have been inspired by it and why you have chosen the specialization that you have.

Respected Sir/Madam,

Here’s hoping that this letter reaches you in good spirit.

I am [Name of Candidate] and I would like to take this opportunity to state how truly passionate I am about pursuing my higher education at a university with such a grand heritage. The reputation of a master’s program in science from your university is world renowned and I shall be honoured to be considered for a place in the program.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and my strong grades along with the complex projects I have undertaken make me a good candidate for your program. I have always dreamt of making impactful changes in the field of civil engineering and I had determined to make it my career early on in my undergraduate years.

I have also had the opportunity to intern with [Name of Company] and that has instilled in me great appreciation for the subject and taught me valuable skills required in the industry. Additionally, I have finished a course in Computed Aided Design from [Name of Organization] which I know will give me an edge while studying the subject at a master’s level.

With this, I would like to close my Letter of Motivation and earnestly hope that my resume and the deep desire that I must pursue M.S. from your university will help in securing a position in the upcoming academic session starting on ………………….

When you are applying for an undergraduate course, your motivation letter will be slightly different than the one above. You should mention all that you achieved in high school, the subjects you studied, what triggered your interest in the program you are applying for and how you wish to incorporate what you learn at university in your future. You may mention incident(s) about when you first realized you wanted to study a specific field and why you chose to apply to a specific university. Write candidly about your passion for the subject and discuss your plans for your career post-graduation.

Below you will find an example of a motivation letter for a bachelor’s degree that you may refer to:

I write this Letter of Motivation as an expression of how passionate I am about pursuing (name of the program) at your esteemed university. With this letter, I would like to convey my wish to seek admission into the bachelor’s program in Economics and I am enclosing all related documents along with it.

I am [Name of Applicant] and I have had a keen affinity for the field of economics ever since I was introduced to the subject in the ninth grade. The theories of how the commercial world functions have intrigued me to take a closer look at the field since a young age and I had decided early on that I would explore the subject in depth at my undergraduate level of education.

My interest in the subject has always been encouraged by my school and I have regularly participated in inter-school debates in Economics. You will find all relevant certificates attached. Additionally, my articles on current economic affairs have also been published several times in the school newspaper, excerpts of which I have attached along with this letter.

I sincerely believe that an education from a university of your stature will help me realize my dreams of making worthwhile contributions to the field of economics and I too can add positive energy to the student body that I would be a part of.

With this, I would like to close the letter stating that I shall be greatly honoured to be considered for a seat at such an esteemed institution.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Warm Regards.

Subject- __________________________________

Respected ma’am/sir,

My name is _____________, and I write this letter to seek the opportunity of pursuing my master’s degree from your esteemed university. As a second-year student studying International Relations, I am at a juncture where I must begin to think about my post-college plans. Throughout my academic programs, I have always reflected on how every ounce of the knowledge I have gained would benefit me in the future. Now, I wish to take my education to the next level with a chance to enhance my current understanding by studying at one of the most prestigious International Relations programs in the world. Spending a year in ______________ would allow me to not only receive exceptional training in the field but also will enable me to gain new perspectives on international diplomacy.

A structured literary experience outside of the country is crucial to my plan of eventually becoming an ambassador. I have travelled extensively for volunteer work and pleasure, and I have found that each occasion has strengthened my view of the world and given me new problems to contemplate. One of my most unforgettable experiences was spending three months in the jungles of Brazil working with indigenous communities to form a record of traditional beliefs and medicines. This catalog was not merely a source of information for anthropologists and historians but also illustrated a rapidly declining population’s cultural history. These experiences abroad have certainly enlightened me about the humanity inherent in every person, and I am determined to do my best in the future to present the best for those I represent.

The university of _____________ boasts one of the most challenging and well-rounded International Relations programs in the world. I look forward to taking classes at your great university, where some of the greatest diplomats and thinkers presented their thoughts. The emphasis of this program on recognizing the diversity and recognizing population modulation truly sets it apart from the rest. As a student, I would endeavor every day to excel in my classes and fully immerse myself in a world that I have never encountered before. I know the road to serving my country overseas will be difficult. Still, I know that my experience at the university of ______________ will provide me with the skills and unforgettable experiences that I could not attain anywhere else.

Difference Between a Motivation Letter, SOP, Cover Letter and Personal statement?

An application process to study abroad involves presenting multiple documents for universities posing unique requirements. With this being the case, it is natural to get confused between the various types and formats of documents that you need to prepare for submission. Here we have briefly explained what a motivation letter, statement of purpose, cover letter, and a personal letter are and how you can differentiate between them.

This letter is written by applicants wishing to be considered for a particular position at an institution or organization outlining why they are a perfect fit and what their true intent is behind applying. This may be written while applying for an educational program at an undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate level as well as while applying to seek work at a non-profit organization as a volunteer or an intern.

A statement of purpose( SOP ) is an essay highlighting your interests in the respective academic field, your experiences as a scholar and your intentions of contributing to the field after graduation.

A cover letter urges the reader to consider the resume that you enclose in your application. It is meant to speak of your competence and how the skill set you possess is apt for the position you are applying for.

While a motivation letter and a personal statement may seem similar, there is a basic difference. A motivation letter speaks about your passion for the program you are applying for and how it will help you achieve your professional goals. Whereas a personal statement speaks promptly about how you are a perfect fit for the position.

You must take into account these differences and avoid sending one in the place of another at all costs because that might lead to the rejection of your application.

In crafting a motivation letter for studying abroad, the journey culminates in a document that not only showcases your academic achievements and professional aspirations but also your personal journey and the unique qualities that make you an ideal candidate for the international program of your choice. This letter is your narrative, a canvas where you paint your intellectual curiosity, cross-cultural adaptability, and readiness to contribute to a global academic community. As you conclude your motivation letter, remember, it's not just about persuading the admissions committee of your suitability; it's about weaving a compelling story of your past achievements, present endeavors, and future aspirations, creating a vivid picture of your potential to thrive and make meaningful contributions in a global learning environment.

Motivation Letter for Internships:

A motivation letter for an internship is a key document that outlines a candidate's enthusiasm, qualifications, and reasons for wanting to join a specific internship program. Unlike a standard job application, this letter should focus on how the internship aligns with the candidate’s educational pursuits and career goals. It's an opportunity to express passion for the field, demonstrate understanding of the organization's work, and highlight relevant skills or experiences. The letter should be concise, well-structured, and personalized to the internship and the organization. It serves as a means to introduce oneself to potential employers, showcasing why one stands out as an ideal intern candidate. The objective is to convince the reader of one's potential to contribute meaningfully to their team while gaining invaluable practical experience.

In conclusion, crafting an effective motivation letter for 2024 admissions is a critical aspect of the application process, offering a unique opportunity to showcase individuality, aspirations, and suitability for a chosen program or institution. A well-written motivation letter, adhering to the appropriate format and enriched with personal insights and clear objectives, can significantly impact an applicant's prospects. It serves as a platform to highlight one's achievements, experiences, and future goals, distinguishing the candidate in a pool of applicants. As admission processes continue to evolve, the ability to articulate one's motivation compellingly and coherently remains a vital skill, making the motivation letter not just a formality, but a powerful tool to connect with admission committees and pave the way for academic and professional success.

What should you not write in a motivational letter?

Do not lie about your skills, experiences, or achievements in your motivation letter, as it can seriously hamper your chances of getting a chance in the institute of your choice. You should strictly refrain from putting in information about the institute based on conjecture. Research well before writing anything about the institute in your motivational letter. Also, avoid cliche phrases as overuse of these statements will not make your motivation letter appear genuine, and chances are your application will be rejected as it will not catch the reader’s attention.

How do you write a powerful motivation letter?

The most important factors of a good motivation letter are- precision, passion, structure, lucidity, and genuineness. Be precise about your accomplishments, experiences, goals so that your passion for the field is clear from the outset. You also need to be careful about structuring your motivation letter so that the various sections are distinctly understandable, and it is easy to peruse your letter. Use straightforward, conversational language to express yourself in a story-like manner with utmost genuineness without using cliche phrases as it can go against your interests.

What should a motivational letter contain?

A motivational letter should contain all relevant information about you – accomplishments, experiences, interests, goals, visions, skills, etc. You should also state your reasons for choosing a particular institute and address all these things through a well-structured introduction, main body, and conclusion.

What is your motivation for studying abroad?

The motivation for studying abroad can be different for each student, but usually, the one thing that attracts them is opportunities. When you study abroad, your chances of forming connections with important people increase manifolds, increasing your chances of getting better jobs. Studying abroad also allows students to develop important life skills such as communication, cooperation, leadership, group work, etc.

How do I write a motivation letter for studying abroad?

When writing a motivation letter for studying abroad, you need to research well about the institute you are choosing and its prospects. Start by introducing yourself and move on to give the reader a brief account of your accomplishments and experiences. You can then explain your interests and your visions which you think can benefit the future of the field you are pursuing.

motivation letter kth

You might not be aware of this, but your scholarship motivation letter can win you that coveted scholarship, or wash all your other efforts down the drain.

The motivation letter is where you get to display your know how and tell a story about yourself. It gives the review committee a preview of your worthiness (how much you deserve the scholarship). Considering what is at stake, you can’t afford to not bring your A-game when crafting the motivation letter.

Think of your scholarship motivation letter as a chance to tell a story you tell about yourself. Every detail you include in the letter tells something about who you are.

The story you tell should paint you as someone who is truly deserving of the scholarship. Paint a story that makes them want to immediately offer you the scholarship – not one where you are appealing merely to their pity. Write a story that makes them admire you – your personality, brains, and skills.

A good scholarship motivation letter is sticky – it sticks in the mind. Good stories will do that. The greatest skill you need when writing a scholarship motivation letter is basically storytelling.

You simply pick certain details out of your life (career, education, etc.), and knit them together into a compelling story that will keep the review committee spell-bound. If that sounds daunting, keep reading, because we are going to break everything down simply and clearly.

WHAT IS A MOTIVATION LETTER?

motivation letter kth

A motivation letter is an introductory document, one-page long, which you attach to your resume when applying for a scholarship. It quickly introduces you to the university admissions officers.

The motivation letter gives you a chance to showcase your skills and know how. The trick is to display your strengths and show them that you are a highly motivated and capable candidate.

A good motivation letter is brief and to the point, taking about 20 seconds to quickly skim through (not read). When crafting the scholarship motivation letter, ask yourself: with only 20 seconds to impress the people reviewing your application, what should you include and what is better left out?

While there are templates out there you can use (and we will give you a sample at the end of this article), you have to be careful not to copy and paste. Don’t use the exact same motivation letter (even an original one) for different scholarship opportunities. Customize your motivation letter to fit each particular scholarship opportunity.

Scholarship review committees will often use motivation letters as a means to narrow down the choices to the applicants they like best. That means if your motivation letter is not good enough, there is a risk of the rest of your application not being read.

Motivation letters are typically necessary for graduate-level scholarships, though you may sometimes require them for specialty programs at a bachelor’s level.

THE BASIC STRUCTURE OF A SCHOLARSHIP MOTIVATION LETTER

While the requirements for scholarship motivation letters are different for each award, the basic structure is similar, containing these three key elements

  • Introduction
  • At least 3 body paragraphs

In the introduction section, you provide your name, your level of education, and the course or degree program you want to study.

In the first body paragraph, you mention any work-related experience you have. This includes internships as well, whether paid or not. Outline your career’s growth/progression in chronological order. Close off the paragraph with a vision of the direction your career will take after you have completed your studies (if given the scholarship).

In the second body paragraph, outline what benefits you expect to gain from your studies. If that sounds like a hard question to ponder, simplify it by asking yourself: what problems do I aim to solve or uncover? Education should have a practical application and having the ability to solve problems is a sign of true (and proactive) learning.

In the third (and final) body paragraph, outline your holistic future plans. This is basically about your big dreams for after you complete your studies. For instance, do you intend to pursue a masters or doctorate degree afterwards? What companies or agencies do you want to work for after you graduate? If you have entrepreneurial goals, you can talk about the company or product you wish to develop. You could also talk about programs or organizations you want to develop to solve a certain problem in society.

Note that we have said it’s “at least 3 body paragraphs”. You can break them up or stretch them into more paragraphs (like 5 or 7), depending on how much content you have or simply for better readability. Extremely thick chunks of text can be a put-off.

Finally, the conclusion wraps up everything. This is where you give a summation of your main points and say something about your professional objectives. You also get to reiterate why you are perfect for the scholarship program.

TIPS ON HOW TO WRITE AN EXCEPTIONAL MOTIVATION LETTER

The application usually doesn’t specify the preferred length of the motivation letter, so it will be up to you to use your judgment. However, the ideal motivation letter should be concise , something that provides information briefly, quickly, yet powerfully. It’s not about how many words you use; it’s about what those words are saying. Learn the trick of condensing information.

The typical motivation letter has a length of between 500 and 1000 words. For a fast reader (125 wpm) , that takes between 1.1 and 2.2 minutes to read. For someone who reads at an average speed (300 wpm), that takes between 1.7 and 3.3 minutes to read. For a slow reader (125 wpm), that takes between 4 and 8 minutes to read.

This clearly shows why reviewers might prefer to skim through quickly and only read carefully when the application seems promising. That means it is absolutely necessary that you craft a concise yet eye-catching motivation letter.

Your motivation letter should contain the following details:

  • Your resume’s most critical details
  • Your education credentials
  • Your professional experiences & the plans you have for your future

Customize The Letter To Fit The Scholarship

As I mentioned earlier, don’t use the same motivation letter for all the scholarship opportunities you apply for. Instead, you should tailor each motivation letter to fit the scholarship you are applying for. As you write about your future plans in the letter, ask yourself how these plans relate to the scholarship you are applying for.

Remember that the review committee will be combing through the applications, selecting those they believe will benefit the most (and are the most suited) for the scholarship. If your future plans do not align with what you want to study, your chances of getting the scholarship will be slim.

For instance, if you are applying for a scholarship to study engineering, it doesn’t make any sense for you to say that you plan on venturing into an unrelated career one day. You have to demonstrate a strong link between your personal goals and the thing you want to study.

Therefore, in the case of an engineering scholarship, you will have to come up with an explanation that demonstrates how you plan to apply that engineering education after you graduate.

It is also worth considering how you can use the knowledge you learn during your studies to support the mission pursued by the scholarship provider.

This is not always necessary, but sometimes it can tip the scales in your favor. For instance, if you are applying for a scholarship from a wildlife preservation organization, it will be very much in your favor if your letter explains how you will use your education to benefit the organization or the field of wildlife preservation.

Another way to customize your motivation letter for the scholarship is by highlighting what unique traits you have that make you more deserving of the scholarship than other applicants.

For instance, what specific experiences have you had that make you deserve it more than the rest. This is where your past volunteering and internship opportunities come in handy – or jobs you have had, talents, hobbies, awards, and so on.

If you get the scholarship, what will you do once you have finished your studies? Is there a specific issue in the world that you wish to address? What problems will you solve?

Think about these questions carefully and in answering them you will slowly come up with a motivation letter that paints you as a promising individual whose application deserves closer scrutiny.

MISTAKES TO BEWARE OF WHEN WRITING A SCHOLARSHIP MOTIVATION LETTER

1. expressing mere desire instead of proving worthiness.

Let’s face it. Every single person applying for a particular scholarship desires the opportunity.

Therefore, desire is not unique. Most people applying for the scholarship also have dreams for their future, the things they want to do.

Dreams are not unique, unless they are rooted in evidence of the ability to achieve them.

For instance, every child once dreamed of being a doctor or a pilot. That should prove the worth of dreams – even a child can dream!

However, if a young person who has done volunteering at a hospital tells you she wants to be a doctor, you are more likely to take her seriously.

If another young person tells you he has done nursing and wants to now study medicine and become a doctor, you will take him even more seriously.

Do you see the point? Dreams are not unique, but when they are accompanied with the evidence of the ability to achieve them, they cease to be dreams and become goals . We don’t admire people for their dreams, because everyone has dreams. We do however admire people for their goals. A lot of people don’t realize there is a difference between the two.

In your scholarship motivation letter, ensure that you provide evidence of the ability to achieve your dreams. That means use your experience, skills, and education credentials to strengthen your narrative.

This is similar to what people call “proof of concept” – not exactly, but still similar. Your credentials and skills and experience provide proof that you deserve the scholarship.

2. Being Vague

Don’t be vague when writing your motivation letter. No one likes that, especially not scholarship review committees. They are combing through applications looking for substance.

If you have something to present, it is generally expected that you will show it off with pride. If you have nothing to show off, that’s when you start devolving into vagueness – or rather, that is what the reviewers will conclude about your vague motivation letter: that you have nothing of worth to showcase.

The scholarship motivation letter is not a place to practice modesty. By all means blow your own trumpet. If you have achievements and skills and qualities to boast of, please include them in your motivation letter. That is what makes a motivation letter eye-catching.

Take ownership of your achievements and your knowledge. Show them off – but of course, as I said, you have to try and stay on topic (keep it relevant to the scholarship). This is all part of the effort to prove that you have know how and that you deserve the scholarship.

3. Not Having A Social Conscience

The scholarship providers do not want to hear that getting the scholarship is a means for you to travel to another country or to feel safer happier, and earn more money than you would in your country.

While all that might happen if you get the scholarship, it should not be your focus – or at least, don’t show the scholarship review committee that it is your focus.

It is not attractive – it is a sign of individualism and a lack of social conscience. What are you going to do for society?

You have to think bigger , have a more holistic vision . Instead of just seeing how the scholarship is going to benefit you, start seeing how it will benefit your community or country through you.

What problems is society facing that you are going to solve thanks to the knowledge and opportunities and connections you will acquire during your studies?

If you have never thought about this, it is never too late to start. Writing a motivation letter shouldn’t be something you knock off in a few minutes. Though the letter itself should be a brief, quick read, it should take a sizeable amount of time for you to perfect. For instance, with this question, all you have to ask yourself is: “What problems is my country or town or village facing, and what can I do about it?”

Relate your solution to the scholarship opportunity – that it is the opportunity itself (education, network) that will give you the ability to solve those problems.

Even better is if you have already started solving a particular problem (through volunteering or having set up an organization) – it shows that adding education will equip you to better tackle the problem.

4. Not Mentioning The Value You Bring To Campus

The other mistake is not mentioning what value you will bring to the campus. What unique spice will you be bringing to the community of scholars? Again, this is about the value you are bringing to the table based on achievements and skills you have already attained.

What can you teach your fellow students or even teachers? What unique point of view do you bring to the campus? What extracurricular activities are you interested in? What are your special talents?

For instance, if you are a soccer player, you can join the school’s soccer team. If you have had the experience of running a business and you are pursuing a business degree, then you will be coming to the classroom with valuable experience the other students may not have and that will no doubt enrich the discourse.

5. Not Following Instructions

Be very careful that you don’t do what the instructions have explicitly asked you not to do. Follow the instructions to a T. If they say send 1 sheet, do exactly that. You should not expect the scholarship reviewers to exempt you from the requirements.

After you have completed writing the motivation letter, you should carefully go through it and compare with the instructions just to ensure you have not contravened any of them.

Since applications are usually extremely many, the reviewers are going to be happy for any reason to disqualify an application – because it reduces the number of choices they have to pick from. If you don’t follow instructions, it is very possible that your application could be thrown in the trash pile and not considered at all for the scholarship.

SAMPLE MOTIVATION LETTER

To give you inspiration that you can draw on when writing your own motivation letter, here is an example of a successful motivation letter:

WRAPPING UP

After reading our sample motivation letter (Elena Palek’s story), do you see what we meant at the beginning of this article when we said a motivation letter is a story? If you were in the review committee and read Elena’s story of grit, dedication, and pure entrepreneurial ambition, wouldn’t you want to give her the scholarship right away?

Everyone has achievements and skills. The good thing about the motivation letter is that you are fully at liberty to show only your strengths and hide your weaknesses (like big gaps in employment).

Take those strengths and knit them together into a compelling story for the review committee, something they won’t want to skim through!

A scholarship motivation letter can make or break your application. This is your opportunity to showcase your knowledge before an in-person interview. Motivation letters are not required for every application. Yet when they are necessary, they are critical. In this guide, we will provide tips for writing a scholarship motivation letter.

What is a scholarship motivation letter?

A motivation letter is like a cover letter you may include with a job application and resume. The goal of the letter is to explain:

  • Why you are a good candidate for the scholarship
  • What you plan to do with the education you receive.

Review committees often use motivation letters to narrow down their pool of applicants. Then they assess the rest of the application from the candidates they like best.

Motivation letters are usually required for graduate-level scholarships. Sometimes, you may need to write one for specialty programs at a bachelor’s level too. If you have the option to include a motivation letter with your scholarship application, take it. This may be the only chance you have to wow the review committee.

Motivation letter for scholarship applications – general guidelines

Usually, the application will not specify how long your motivation letter should be. You will need to use your best judgment to write a concise motivation letter. The letter should include:

  • The most important elements of your resume
  • Your education
  • Your professional experiences and plans for the future.

Motivation letters are usually around 500-1,000 words. Split them into paragraphs for easy reading.

tailor motivational letter concept

Tailor your motivation letter to fit the sholarship

Your motivation letter should link your future plans with the goals of the scholarship . How will you benefit from continued education in this field? How will you use this knowledge to support the mission of the scholarship provider?

Say that the scholarship is from an agency that supports wildlife preservation. Your letter should explain how you plan to apply your education towards a career in that field.

You also need to establish why you deserve this application more than other applicants. What specific experiences do you have now that set you apart from the rest? What specific plans do you have that will address a current issue in the world? Even if you currently have limited knowledge about the issue, use that to your advantage. Explain how you could thrive with more education and solve even more problems in the future.

The structure of a scholarship motivation letter

Scholarship motivation letters vary by award, but they usually consist of three elements:

  • An introduction
  • Three body paragraphs
  • A conclusion

Your introduction should include your name, level of education and the degree program.

Your first body paragraph should include any work-related experience you have. This can include both paid and unpaid internships. You should show the growth of your career in chronological order. Finally, suggest where your career will go with continued education.

Your second body paragraph should explain what you hope to gain from your education. Think of which problems you aim to solve or uncover.

Your final body paragraph should explain your holistic plans for the future. Some ideas for inspiration:

  • You can include extra education you plan to pursue after education.
  • You can write about companies or agencies you’d like to work for after graduation.
  • You can talk about programs or organizations you would like to develop.

Finally, your conclusion should re-emphasize why you are a good candidate for the scholarship.

writing motivational letter

What NOT to include when writing a scholarship motivation letter

Your scholarship motivation letter should be well-written with no grammar or spelling errors. Use a professional tone and advanced phrasing (no slang). Provide specific examples about your past, present and future. Stay away from vague generalizations. Vagueness suggests a lack of care or knowledge. Neither of  these are impressive to a scholarship review committee.

Some final tips

Writing a motivation letter for scholarship applications takes time and commitment. Plan what you will say in advance, and allow at least three days to write the letter, review it, step away from it and edit it. This extra time will provide the best chance of success with your application.

A Sample Scholarship Motivation Letter

Julie Moore 9876 Smith St. Stillwater, OK 74074The Scholarship Committee 123 Learning Rd. Suite 4A Oklahoma City, OK 73127

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Julie Moore and I am a third year student at Oklahoma State University. I am currently pursuing a five-year Bachelor of Architecture Degree. My plan is to follow up with a one-year master’s degree after I graduate.

In high school, I worked extensively with my local Habitat for Humanity branch to help build homes for low income families. I learned about the construction process from the ground up, and I discovered the importance of function in architectural design. The homes we built during my four years as a volunteer were never extravagant. They served their purpose and became a beacon of hope for their owners.

My education has been focused on this mindset: function over form, stability over showmanship. I have enrolled in several classes that crossover to the Architectural Engineering major. My goal is to have a comprehensive view of how design meets structure. I have worked on three extra-credit residential design projects under the supervision of my architecture professors (Dr. X and Dr. Y). This helped speed up my research and education.

My goal is to become an architect to create accessible, affordable housing opportunities in underprivileged communities. Living in a college town, I have seen countless rental properties available. Yet there are few homes for sale that are affordable enough for college students and first-time buyers. This is the case in many towns throughout America, especially areas with a low standard of living. I want to create neighborhoods that include affordable starter homes. This would enable low and middle-class families to build equity, avoid excessive debt, and create financial stability for their futures.

This summer, I will intern with  LMNOP Architects. Upon completion of my master’s degree, I hope to continue there as I further develop my skills. After working under acclaimed residential architects Suzan Craft and Peter Wood, I would like to open my own architectural firm focused on developing inexpensive, high-quality housing. I also would like to work with Habitat for Humanity again, this time as an architect instead of a general laborer. I believe firmly in their mission to build “a world where everyone has a decent place to live.” I appreciate your consideration. With your help, I can continue my schooling in architecture and design to bring accessible homes to those in need.

Sincerely, Julie Moore
