2024 Essay Contest Topic

This year, AFSA celebrates the 100th anniversary of the United States Foreign Service. Over the last century, our diplomats and development professionals have been involved in groundbreaking events in history – decisions on war and peace, supporting human rights and freedom, creating joint prosperity, reacting to natural disasters and pandemics and much more. As AFSA looks back on this century-long history, we invite you to join us in also looking ahead to the future. This year students are asked to explore how diplomats can continue to evolve their craft to meet the needs of an ever-changing world that brings fresh challenges and opportunities to the global community and America’s place in it.

Over the past 100 years the Foreign Service has faced a multitude of challenges such as world war, terrorism, nuclear proliferation, humanitarian disasters, global pandemics, and economic crises. In a 1,000-1,500-word essay please identify what you believe will be the biggest challenge to face the Foreign Service in the future. The essay will describe this challenge and clearly define how American diplomats can help mitigate it.

Successful essays will use past or current diplomatic efforts to support what you believe to be the best course of action to tackle this obstacle.

The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) is committed to educating the next generation of peacebuilders about the U.S. role in preventing and resolving conflicts around the world, and about the important part that young people can play as engaged global citizens.

national essay writing competition 2021

Malaysia celebrates its 64th Independence Day this year 2021. To you, what does gaining independence mean and how does it impact the future generation of the nation?

WHY THE YOUTH?

national essay writing competition 2021

You are the leaders of tomorrow.

national essay writing competition 2021

You will shape and decide the landscape of the country in the foreseeable future.

national essay writing competition 2021

You will be the deciding factor - from running the government efficiently to imposing socio-cultural reforms for a united Malaysia.

HERE IS YOUR FIRST STEP

Put your thoughts in an essay.

Let your voice be heard today.

Youth are leaders of tomorrow, they say. This saying might have some significance but if tweaked to “youth are leaders of today” it will give a greater meaning and impact because all that matters now is today. Not tomorrow. Today affects tomorrow.

The prevalence of poor leadership is seen through various factors that cause a nation to implode. Different generations have come and passed. The call ‘to empower youth to be leaders of tomorrow’ has been nothing more than a resonance reverberating around classrooms and offices of lawmakers.

The time to harness different talents and abilities within a shared value system starts at schools. One way to tackle this conundrum is to encourage students into understanding the true context of Malaysia, its history and why acting now is essential for nation-building.

Students today will inevitably inherit this country when current leaders slowly move to take the backseats. Now is the time for students to stand up, be noticed and voice out their vision for the country with bright new ideas.

This essay writing competition is a step in the right direction for students to conspicuously articulate their ideas and ideals for how a nation should move forward.

If these appeal to you, we want to hear from you.

ABOUT THIS COMPETITION

The inaugural competition took place in 2019 and this is the second time it is being held. Essentially, this competition offers local and international high school students residing in Malaysia an opportunity to showcase their English language essay writing skills. Our aim is to encourage them to be interested in social and community issues and to express their thoughts through the art of essay writing using the English language.

In celebration of the 64th Merdeka Day as well as UCSI University's support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals , we encourage students to observe, reflect and write on the role of youth in nation building.

Along with the development of a country’s socio-economical status, environmental sustainability is also gaining equal importance. More youths are becoming more educated in the effort to create a greener environment. This has gained more attention from environmental activists and the media as they too want to highlight these positive efforts in the hope that everyone will realise the negative impacts of industrialised activities on the earth and what they can do to remedy them. Following this, more youths start to realise the impact they can make in creating minimal to zero waste in a community in the ASEAN region. This collective effort from all parties should continue on. Youth will one day be blazing trails for greater ideas for tomorrow. This is their chance to stand up, be noticed, and voice their vision for the country. This essay-writing competition will give youths an opportunity to share their ideas on how to create a more sustainable environment.

  • Open to all high school students between 16 and 20 years old residing in Malaysia
  • The length of the essay must be between 1,000 and 1,500 words.
  • The submission must be an original piece of work and well-written in English.
  • The submission must be from a single author.
  • The essay must be inspiring and have a persuasive call to action on issues discussed.
  • The essay must be typed in Times New Roman; 12 point, justified, 1.5 between lines, 2.0 between paragraphs.
  • All entries must be submitted through the online portal: apps.ucsiuniversity.edu.my/essay/

A panel of judges will review all eligible entries received and select, at their sole discretion, the entries that are eligible to receive prizes.

The judging panel will evaluate the art submissions based on various criteria such as the originality of expression, creative use of materials and presentation, to name a few. The judges reserve the right to disqualify any entry if there is any reasonable doubt about the authenticity of the artwork.

Elementary/Middle school: The First Amendment protects freedom of speech. What happens when people are free to say anything they want in person or online? For example, yelling "fire" in a crowded room or posting hateful words on social media. What kind of free speech situations require a judge or police officer to get involved to keep the peace? High school: In 2021, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a high school cheerleader could not be punished in school for using curse words on social media when commenting about not making the cheer team while she was off school grounds. Do you think students should be held to the same standard when exercising their First Amendment right to freedom of speech whether they’re on or off school property? Decide if there are circumstances where students should be punished by a court of law for what they say or write to maintain civility.

Children of India are the future of this great nation. They are the crucial building blocks of the nation that we seek to build. It is important that you dream and set up goals for yourselves and then work towards those goals with dedication, integrity and commitment. Always remain positive and never let failures deter you.

..the ignited mind of the youth is the most powerful resource on the earth, above the earth & under the earth. India's real heart & soul is her rural population. My dream like many children is to see a corruption-free India by 2020 & one of the best ways it can be achieved is to use 'love'. It is the greatest tool that all of us have, to teach people to be honest in the way they do things & conduct themselves. We need to start at home & if the children can start that themselves, then it will be a big beginning in itself.

National Essay Writing Competition 2024 for Ethiopian students

national essay writing competition 2021

Deadline: April 20, 2024

Applications are invited for the National Essay Writing Competition 2024 . The Ethiopian Law Schools Association (ELSA) and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Office Ethiopia/African Union are pleased to announce a National Essay Writing Competition on the theme “The Role of Academia in Upholding the Rule of Law and Human Rights in Ethiopia.” This competition aims to foster critical thinking and scholarly discourse on the vital role of academia in promoting the rule of law and safeguarding human rights in the society.

About the Essay Competition

The multifaceted role of academia in upholding the rule of law and human rights in Ethiopia presents a rich tapestry of historical, theoretical, and practical considerations. They, therefore, can begin by examining how academia’s involvement has evolved throughout Ethiopian history, drawing parallels to global trends in academic activism and applying diverse theoretical frameworks to analyze its current impact. Further exploration can delve into specific areas of influence, such as how research sheds light on human rights abuses, informs legal reforms, and educates future generations of changemakers.

The power of public awareness and dialogue generated by academics through conferences, publications, and public engagement deserves its own spotlight, alongside direct legal and policy advocacy efforts. However, navigating challenges like restricted freedoms and resource constraints necessitates exploring strategies for collaboration, capacity building, and measuring the true impact of academia’s contributions. Additionally, focusing on specific disciplines, analyzing human rights within various contexts, and showcasing impactful case studies can offer further nuance and depth to your exploration. Remember, this is your canvas to paint – choose the sub-themes that resonate most with your unique perspective and voice!
