The Networking essay is your opportunity to showcase your ability to connect, collaborate, and engage with a diverse network of individuals. Here are some tips and an outline to help you write an award-winning Networking essay:
Tips for Writing a Networking Essay:
Outline: You should follow the standard rule of writing an essay.
Introduction
Start with a Captivating Anecdote: Begin your essay with an introduction paragraph that introduces the whole point of the paragraph, whether it is about leadership, networking, etc.
Provide examples in the Body : Add a real-life example that illustrates your networking prowess. Showcase a memorable interaction or collaboration that highlights your effective networking skills that have brought a change or something positive.
Highlight Diversity: Emphasize the diversity of your network. Discuss connections with people from various backgrounds, cultures, and professions. Diversity shows your ability to bridge gaps and work effectively with a wide range of individuals. It is good to show that your networks involve, professionals, experts, and politicians (if possible), Academics (such as professors, writers, researchers, alumni, or students), and volunteers (such as community, social, etc.).
Impactful Connections: Share stories of how your network has helped you achieve your goals or make a positive impact in your community or field of study. It is better to use the STAR method to write your examples. Provide concrete examples of how your connections have opened doors or provided valuable insights. Demonstrate Reciprocity: Networking is a two-way street. Describe how you've contributed to your network by providing support, mentorship, or assistance to others. Please do not write examples about the things you got or achieved through your networks .
Conclusion: Summarize your leadership journey and its significance.

How to Write a Scholarship Essay | Template & Example

A good scholarship essay demonstrates the scholarship organization’s values while directly addressing the prompt. If you plan ahead , you can save time by writing one essay for multiple prompts with similar questions.

Scholarships are a type of student financial aid that don’t require repayment. They are awarded based on various factors, including academic merit, financial need, intended major, personal background, or activities and interests.
Like college applications, scholarship applications often require students to submit their grades, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and an essay.
A scholarship essay shares your values and qualities in the context of a specific question, such as “How does technology affect your daily life?” or “Who has had the greatest impact on your life?”
Be wary of scholarship scams
While some applications may not require an essay, be wary of scholarship scams that do the following:
- Guarantee you scholarship money for a fee
- Claim scholarship information is exclusive to their company
- Ask for your bank or credit card information to hold the scholarship
Some legitimate companies do charge for releasing comprehensive scholarship lists or creating a tailored list of scholarship opportunities based on your profile.
However, you can always discover scholarship opportunities for free through your school counselor, community network, or an online search.
Many students focus on well-known, large scholarship opportunities, which are usually very competitive. To maximize your chance of success, invest time in applying for a wide variety of scholarships: national and local, as well as big and small award amounts. There are also scholarships for international students .
In addition to charitable foundation and corporate scholarships, you should consider applying for institutional scholarships at your prospective universities, which can award money based on your application’s strength, your financial situation, and your demonstrated interest in the school.
Check with your guidance counselor, local organizations, community network, or prospective schools’ financial aid offices for scholarship opportunities. It’s a good idea to start applying as early as your junior year and continue throughout your senior year.
Choose the right scholarships for you
Choose scholarships with missions and essay topics that match your background, experiences, and interests. If the scholarship topic is meaningful to you, it will be easier for you to write an authentic and compelling essay.
Don’t shy away from applying for local scholarships with small dollar amounts. Even a few hundred dollars can help you pay for books.
Local scholarships may be more tailored to your community, background, and activities, so they’re likely more relevant to you. Fewer students apply for these scholarships, so you have less competition and a higher chance of success.
Some places to look for local scholarships include
- Civic organizations, such as the Rotary Club, Lions Club, etc.
- Your church, mosque, synagogue, or place of worship
- Community groups, such as the YMCA
- Ethnicity-based organizations
- Your local library or local small businesses
- Organizations related to your intended major
- Your city or town
- Your school district
- Unions, such as SEIU, the Teamsters, CWA, etc.
- Your employer or your parents’ employers
- Banks, credit unions, and local financial institutions

While researching scholarship opportunities, create a scholarship tracker spreadsheet to keep track of the following:

- Required application materials

You can also include scholarship essay prompts in your college essay tracker sheet . By grouping or color-code overlapping essay prompts, you can plan to write a single essay for multiple scholarships. Sometimes, you can also reuse or adapt your main college essay .
Even if you’re adapting another essay, it’s important to make sure your essay directly addresses the prompt, stays within the word count limit , and demonstrates the organization’s values. The scholarship committee will be able to tell if you reuse an essay that doesn’t quite respond to the prompt, so be sure to tailor it to the questions asked.
Research each organization
Before writing, research the scholarship organization’s mission and reason for awarding the scholarship. Learning more about the organization can help you select an appropriate topic and relevant story.
While you should tailor your essay to the organization’s values, maintain your authentic voice. Never use false or exaggerated stories. If the organization’s values don’t align with yours or you can’t brainstorm a relevant story for the scholarship, continue searching for other scholarship opportunities to find a more appropriate one for you.
After researching the organization, identify a specific personal experience that embodies its values and exemplifies why you will be a successful student.
Choose a story with the following criteria:
- Responds to the prompt
- Demonstrates the organization’s values
- Includes an authentic story
- Focuses on you and your experience, not someone else’s
A good scholarship essay is not
- A resume of your achievements
- A lengthy opinion piece about the essay topic
- An essay featuring a negative tone that puts down others
If appropriate, you can briefly address how the scholarship money will help you achieve your educational goals. You should also end with a brief thank-you.

Prompt: Describe how working for Chelsea’s Chicken restaurant has developed leadership skills that will help you succeed in college. Give specific examples of leadership characteristics that you have exhibited during your employment with us.
As a nervous 16-year-old, I walked into Chelsea’s Chicken for my first day of work determined to make enough money to put gas in my car and buy pizza on the weekends. My only previous job was mowing my neighbors’ lawns when they were on vacation, so I had no idea what to expect. I was a bit intimidated by my new responsibilities, especially handling money and helping disgruntled customers.
However, it didn’t take me long to learn my way around the cash register and successfully address customer complaints. One day, Roger, the store manager, asked me if I wanted to join Chelsea’s Chicken Leadership Training Initiative. He said he saw leadership potential in me because of my attitude with the customers and my enthusiasm for learning new job responsibilities. It surprised me because I had never thought of myself as a leader, but I quickly agreed, and Roger handed me a three-ring binder that was thicker than my math and science textbooks put together! He told me to take it home and read over it during the following week.
In that binder, I discovered that being a leader means taking the initiative, especially when the job is undesirable. One week later, I got to practice that idea when a little kid threw up in the bathroom and missed the toilet. It smelled terrible, but I stepped forward and told Roger that I would clean it up. My coworkers thought I was crazy, but I started to believe in my leadership potential.
That night as we closed the store, Roger pulled me aside in the parking lot and told me that he could tell that I had been studying the manual. He wanted to give me more responsibility, along with a dollar-per-hour pay raise. I was surprised because I had been working there for only a couple of months, but his encouragement helped me make a connection: good leadership helps other people, and it often is rewarded. I was determined to experience more of both.
Within a month, I was ready to take the Team Leader exam, which mattered because I would receive a promotion and a much bigger raise if I passed. But, when I got to work, two of the scheduled team members had called in sick. We were noticeably short-handed, and our customers weren’t happy about it.
I walked back to the lockers, put on my vest and hat, and took my place behind an open register. Customers immediately moved into my line to place their orders. Roger looked at me with surprise and asked, “Did you forget that you’re testing tonight?” I responded, “No, sir—but what’s the use of taking a leadership test if you aren’t going to lead in real life?” Roger smiled at me and nodded.
He stayed late that night after we closed so that I could leave early and still take the test. I noticed that Roger was always staying late, helping employees learn new skills. His example taught me that leaders take the initiative to develop other leaders. He gave me a clear picture of what shared leadership looks like, making room for others to grow and excel. When I asked him where he learned to do that, he said, “From the same leadership manual I gave you!”
Chelsea’s Chicken has offered me so much more than a paycheck. Because of Roger’s example, I have learned to take the initiative to care for my family and friends, such as being the first to do the dishes without my mom asking or volunteering to pick up my friend for our SAT prep course. Now, as I prepare to enter college, I have confidence in my leadership ability. I know I’m signing up for a challenging major—Biology, Pre-Med—yet I also know that Chelsea’s Chicken has helped me to develop the perseverance required to complete my studies successfully.

Disclaimer: Note that the advice given here below is my own personal opinion and not that of the Chevening Secretariat or the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office .
When applying for the Chevening Scholarship, you will be required to submit four written essays, each a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 500 words.
Quick Tips on how to write your 4 Chevening Essays:
When writing your essays, use the STAR and SMART approach.
Ensure that you cover the bases in each of your essays, mentioning the most important elements.
Your essays have to be truthful, concise, and well-written.
Ensure that you tell a story when writing your essays, you can add bullet points to list achievements and highlight career goals however there should be a flow.
Ensure that any stranger can make out what you are trying to say, making it clear what you are talking about. When making references to data or situations from your home country, be sure to mention the country's name.
Refrain using words like our and their, and opt to name what you are talking about.
Use Grammarly to spell check your work and ensure that your grammar is correct.
STAR Approach - Derived from Muse
Situation: Set the scene and give the necessary details of your example.
Task: Describe what your responsibility was in that situation.
Action: Explain exactly what steps you took to address it.
Result: Share what outcomes your actions achieved.
SMART Approach - Derived from CFI
Specific: Well defined, clear, and unambiguous.
Measurable : With specific criteria that measure your progress toward the accomplishment of the goal.
Achievable: Attainable and not impossible to achieve.
Realistic: Within reach, realistic, and relevant to your life purpose.
Timely: With a clearly defined timeline, including a starting date and a target date. The purpose is to create urgency.
Four Essay Topics
Leadership and Influence
Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer. - Question as per the Chevening Website
Using the methods explained above (STAR AND SMART Approach), ensure that you speak on the times you have depicted leadership traits, the leadership positions you have occupied and the times you have displayed a position of influence. These can range from managerial positions, leadership in organizations (NGO's included), or in your day-to-day life. In addition, you can touch on what leadership ambitions you have and how this ties back to your community.
It is important to ensure that the examples are impact-driven and not only for self-gain.
Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. - Question as per the Chevening Website
Writing your networking essay is primarily about showing clear examples of the relationships you have built, how they were established, and how you have managed to maintain them. In addition, highlight how these said relationships have been instrumental in your personal development and the work that you do. Ensure that you are able to glean from every example the skill acquired and how these skills will be useful to you in the future as a possible Chevening scholar. This essay, in essence, is to show that you have the ability to use the opportunities given to you in a tangible and impactful manner.
Career Plan
Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer-term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country. - Question as per Chevening Website
This essay provides an opportunity for you to layout an immediate 2-year plan, and a 5 to 10-year plan. Your plans need to be attainable and should speak to your ambitions as laid out in your career plan. The most important tip for when writing out your career plan, is to ensure that when you touch on your professional experience, it not be written as though it is a Curriculum Vitae but rather speaking on impact, journey, and career trajectory. You too are welcome to link your journey thus far, to how this informs your next career move, namely pursuing a masters degree. You should depict an understanding of what you want to do in the future, how this is tangibly attainable, and what your ambitions are long term.
Studying in the UK
Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future. Please do not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education section of this form. - Question as per the Chevening Website
Do not duplicate your career essay in this essay, however, you can link the information. You will also be required to list the three universities you will be applying to, the name of the courses at the said universities, and why you chose the particular university.
Tip: Depending on which course you intend to study, google the top-performing universities in the said field to inform your university choice. Then ensure that the universities you would like to attend are Chevening partner universities, before finalizing your list of your three chosen universities.

CHEVENING APPLICATION: NETWORKING ESSAY TIPS
*Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. (minimum word count: 100 words; maximum word count: 500 words)*
Chevening believes in making and maintaining connections. Truthfully, that is the only way to achieve your goals. It is one thing to know what you have set out to achieve. But it is a completely different ball game to manifest it into reality, you will need a strong network of people around who have the know-how or more connections with the know-how on the various aspects of turning your dreams into reality. Afterall, no man can be an island.
On that premise, I am sure you have networked once or twice in your career or personal endeavors for the furtherance of a set out goal. And those connections have a story behind them, and you have a tale of what you achieved due to banking on and utilizing your network. Well, there you are. now you just write it down.
Start off with your personal views on networking in achieving your dreams. What are your strongest networking skills?. E.g I mentioned my diplomatic skills.
Then mention how you form connections. And if there’s a chain, Chevening wants to know them all, e.g so and so linked me with so and so…
Next? How exactly did you utilize that connection? What were the results?
Top it up with how you plan on utilizing these skills in the future.
I know it’s just 500 words so pick the strongest story (stories) you have.
Make sure your networking essay is connected to your leadership essay.
USE THE STAR APPROACH:
Situation- What was that vision you had, the dream you wanted to realise?
Task- What was the task to tackle the situation? Did you want to organise a community outreach? Was it to get funds?
Action- How did you leverage on your connections? Or did you already have a person in your network who could help? How did you reach out?
Results – Now what exactly did you achieve from leveraging on your network to provide a solution for the situation at hand.
And voila! Your networking essay is complete!
CASE IN POINT:
Situation: I wanted to organise a community humanitarian outreach to IDPs
Task: Reach out to IDPs, Get NYSC’s approval, source for funds, source for clothes and food.
Action: My team member knew some people who knew the head of the IDPs, wrote a letter to NYSC, went round to all the major stakeholders in my place of primary assignment to solicit for funds, clothes and food. Pasted an e-flier soliciting for same. Utilized the vehicles and volunteers at my place of primary assignment, etc! Who I knew played more part in making it a success than what I knew.
Result: Reached more than 300 househokds. It was so successful my place of primary assignment requested for more interventions, received NYSC letter of recommendation.

As a disaster management expert and agriculturalist, my knowledge makes me particularly sensitive to environmental concerns. Currently employed as the Project Officer for Charity Foundation – a national NGO – my projects revolve around environmental protection, climate change adaptation strategies in agriculture as well as other sectors.
While completing my Master’s studies, I became deeply engaged in climate change issues that impact urban slum dwellers’ quality of life. I have been exploring the impacts of climate change on five assets for livelihood, as outlined in the Sustainable Livelihood Framework from DFID. My undergraduate research focused on discovering alternative sources of chemical pesticides to control plant diseases through plant tissue cultivation, genetic engineering and biotechnological advancement. It was not a coincident that I was trusted to lead alumni division in 50th Dies Natalis of [NAME OF PROGRAM], since I was known as The Event Organizer back then. This event was aimed to celebrate [NAME OF MAJOR]’s milestone within 50 years and I was in-charge to develop strategic planning for engaging alumni and strengthening their connection with [NAME OF PROGRAM] Program. In order to engage nearly 4.000 alumni in meaningful ways, my strategy was to divide my team into smaller team based on the class of alumni, since I believed that different approach was required for older and younger alumni. Younger alumni are more likely to get involved in the digital world, thus I used social media campaign as a bridge to deliver clear, creative and impactful message. While more traditional communication was applied to outreach our older alumni, such as warm phone call and personal meeting. This strategy had resulted in attendance of 75% of contacted alumni in the main event of [NAME OF EVENT].
In this event, we would also like our alumni to give back to our program by conducting sharing session. From alumni list, I identified potential guest speaker for this session and figured out ways to access them. At first, I doubted my networking skill, but then I realized that building network is less a matter of skill than of will. Not only is it useful for learning directly from individuals I approach, but also the benefits of growing my own authority are just as powerful. My approach focused on their giving on a cause and I finally managed to set an agreement with 9 alumni, exceeding our initial target of 5 alumni.
To build mutual relationship with alumni after the event had ended, I regularly shared newsletter and sent e-mail to share relevant information and resource. No matter whom I am trying to build a relationship with, I will always treat that person as a friend rather than a business contact. However, it was still beyond my expectation that right before my graduation, my current supervisor who also happened to be one of alumni that I used to approach offered first career opportunity to me. By first-hand experience, I learned that effective networking can be achieved by developing relationships with other people and providing mutual support and encouragement.
Networking is nothing without added value. When I become a Chevening scholar, I will be advanced in many ways therefore it would be my priority to give back to Chevening and society. As a scholar, my strategy will be to engage other scholars and alumni who share similar passions in energy and environment to find global solutions that can be applied locally. Utilizing support from impactful Chevening alumni network and my network (LIST OF NETWORK), I plan to initiate Energy101 class to educate youth about energy and environment. Lastly, as a Chevening Alumni, I will actively participate in Indonesian Chevening Alumni Association to strengthen relationships among the United Kingdom, alumni and scholars.

How to enter, 1. complete an online quarterly contest application.
Enter the Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Contest by completing a Quarterly Contest application. The second Quarterly Contest runs from April 1, 2024 through June 30, 2024. Complete and save all requested information.
2. Prepare your Written Essay or Video Essay
For each Quarterly Contest, the topic of your Written Essay or Video Essay (your “Essay Topic”) must be an individual you know personally, who lives in your community. Your Written Essay or Video Essay must address how the individual you have selected as your Essay Topic has inspired you and helped you build the confidence you need to achieve your goals.
Written Essay and Video Essay submissions must meet all of the requirements described in the contest Official Rules. Your Written Essay or Video Essay must be (i) in English, (ii) your own original work, created solely by you (and without the use of any means of artificial intelligence (“AI”)), and (iii) the exclusive property of you alone.
Written Essays must be 500 words or less. You can write your Written Essay directly in the application, or you can copy and paste it into the appropriate area in the application form.
Video Essay submissions must be directly uploaded to the contest application site. Video Essays must be no more than 3 minutes in length and no larger than 1 GB. Only the following file formats are accepted: MP4, MPG, MOV, AVI, and WMV. Video Essays must not contain music of any kind nor display any illegal, explicit, or inappropriate material, and Video Essays must not be password protected or require a log-in/sign-in to view. You must upload your Video Essay to the application, and you may not submit your Video Essay in DVD or other physical form. (Video Essays submitted via mail will not be reviewed or returned.)
Tips to Record Quality Videos on a Smartphone:
- Don’t shoot vertical video. Computer monitors have landscape-oriented displays, so shoot your video horizontally.
- Use a tripod. Even small movements can make a big difference when editing.
- Don’t use zoom. If you need to get a close shot of the subject, move closer as zooming can cause pixilation.
- Use natural lighting. Smartphone lighting can wash out your video.
3. Review and submit your Quarterly Contest application
Review your information on your Quarterly Application (and check the spelling of a Written Essay) and submit your entry by 11:59:59 p.m. Central Time on the applicable Quarterly Contest period end date. The second Quarterly Contest period end date is June 30, 2024.
4. Await notification
Winning entries are selected by an independent panel of judges who are not affiliated with Regions. If your entry is selected as a Quarterly Contest winner, you will need to respond to ISTS with the required information.
Eligibility
For purposes of this contest:
- The “Eligible States” are defined as the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
- An “accredited college” is defined as a nonprofit, two- or four-year college or university located within one of the fifty (50) United States or the District of Columbia.
To be eligible to enter this contest and to win an award in a Quarterly Contest, at the time of entry, you must:
- Be a legal U.S. resident of one of the Eligible States.
- Be age 16 or older.
- Have at least one (1) year (or at least 18 semester hours) remaining before college graduation.
- If you are not yet in college, begin your freshman year of college no later than the start of the 2025 – 2026 college academic school year.
- As of your most recent school enrollment period, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in school (and if no GPA is provided at school, be in “good standing” or the equivalent thereof in school).

The 2024 Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Contest (the “Contest”) consists of four (4) separate quarterly contests (each a “Quarterly Contest”): (1) the “Q-1 Contest;” (2) the “Q-2 Contest;” (3) the “Q-3 Contest;” and (4) the “Q-4 Contest.” The Q-1 Contest begins on 02/01/24 and ends on 03/31/24; the Q-2 Contest begins on 04/01/24 and ends on 06/30/24; the Q-3 Contest begins on 07/01/24 and ends on 09/30/24; and the Q-4 Contest begins on 10/01/24 and ends on 12/31/24. To enter and participate in a particular Quarterly Contest, at the time of entry, you must: (a) be a legal U.S. resident of one of the Eligible States; (b) be 16 years of age or older; (c) have at least one (1) year (or at least 18 semester hours) remaining before college graduation; (d) (if you are not yet in college) begin your freshman year of college no later than the start of the 2025 – 2026 college academic school year; and (e) as of your most recent school enrollment period, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in school (and if no grade point average is provided at school, be in “good standing” or the equivalent thereof in school). Two Johns Hopkins students named Goldwater Scholars
The goldwater scholarship provides financial support to undergraduates pursuing research careers in stem fields.

Johns Hopkins juniors Kyra Bowden and Grace Luettgen were recently awarded the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship .

The scholarship, named in honor of late Senator and Major General Barry Goldwater, supports college sophomores and juniors pursuing research careers in engineering, mathematics, and the natural sciences. Bowden and Luettgen are being recognized for their respective work in the fields of biomedical engineering and biophysics.
This year, the Goldwater Scholarship Foundation is supporting 438 new scholars selected from an applicant pool of about 5,000. Each scholar will receive up to $7,500 per academic year until either two years have passed or the student graduates. Schools can nominate up to four applicants each year.

Biomedical engineering
Bowden aspires to use machine learning and image analysis to study disease and injury and optimize outcomes for orthopedics patients. Working with Seth Blackshaw and Jonathan Ling since spring 2022, Bowden has analyzed differential exon inclusion in proteins using ASCOT, a database of alternative splicing events drawn from hundreds of thousands of mouse and human RNA sequencing datasets, and developed Python scripts to use the AlphaFold v2.0 AI platform to model how ASCOT-identified splicing events impact protein structure and function. Bowden has received author credits in the top journals Nature Communications and Nature Medicine and is the first author of a poster presented at the Society for Neuroscience. She also received a grant from the Leong Summer Research Fund and will be spending this summer in Switzerland as part of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne Excellence Research Internship Program. Outside of the lab, Bowden has served as a resident advisor since her sophomore year and is an officer of the Johns Hopkins chapters of the Biomedical Engineering Society and SHARE (Supporting Hospitals Abroad with Resources and Equipment). She volunteers with Thread, JHU Tutorial Project, and at a local health care center.
Grace Luettgen
Physics, Biophysics
Luettgen wants to design signaling proteins that modulate interactions between the immune system and diseased cells. Luettgen has been working in Brian Camley's lab since the spring of her first year, where her first project focused on developing a computational model to elucidate potential mechanisms of cell cluster migration, a process crucial to tissue development, wound healing, and cancer metastasis. She is now concentrating on chronic lymphocytic leukemia, using computational modeling to understand how malignant lymphocytes invade the lymph nodes by sensing changes in chemical cues. She is the first author of a recent presentation on this leukemia research at the American Physical Society and won an ASPIRE grant to help fund it. Luettgen has also assisted Aleksandrina Goeva and Miri Adler at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard on gene regulation of cerebellar neurons and communication between molecular layer interneurons (MLIs) and Purkinje layer interneurons (PLIs). Outside the lab and academic work for her two majors, Luettgen is an organizer for JHU Tutorial Project and volunteers with SHARE and Baltimore First, providing tech support to elderly members of the Baltimore community.
