Consider in-state tuition and tuition reciprocity

In-state tuition allows residents of a state to receive cheaper tuition for a college or university in their state. Additionally, many universities and colleges reserve scholarships and financial aid for in-state students, which helps reduce the cost of attending college for those who live there.

Here are a few well-known Michigan universities and their in-state vs out-of-state tuition costs:

  • In-state tuition: $16,736
  • Out-of-state tuition: $55,334
  • In-state tuition: $16,051
  • Out-of-state tuition: $43,435

How do you get in-state tuition?

Being an out-of-state student paying out-of-state tuition rates can be extremely expensive in Michigan. In order to become a Michigan resident for tuition purposes, you will need to physically reside in the state of Michigan for at least 12 months prior to the beginning of the semester in which you want in-state tuition rates. During these 12 months, you will need to establish a domicile in Michigan. This includes obtaining physical evidence of your commitment to Michigan, such as obtaining a Michigan driver’s license and registering your vehicle in Michigan. Be sure to double check with your intended Michigan college or university’s policy on obtaining residency for tuition purposes to ensure you are eligible.

Read more: How to get in-state tuition as an out-of-state student

Does Michigan offer tuition reciprocity ?

No, Michigan no longer participates in the Midwest Student Exchange .

What’s Covered:

Are “no-essay” scholarships worth it, where to focus your scholarship search.

  • 34 No-Essay Scholarships

Scholarships play a large role in many students’ plans for how to pay for college, but completing the applications for some scholarships is time-consuming—especially for students who are busy taking challenging courses and involved with extracurricular activities. Luckily, some scholarships are easier to apply for than others, like the no-essay scholarships listed below.

No-essay scholarships are easier to apply for than other, more involved scholarships, so it doesn’t cost you much in time or effort to apply. However, because they’re easy to apply for, they receive a lot of applications, which means more competition and lower odds of winning. It is also less clear how no-essay scholarship recipients are selected without an essay to set your application apart.

If you choose to apply for no-essay scholarships, just know that they are just a part of a strategy for winning awards to college and are best-suited as a supplement to local and more niche scholarships. If you don’t like the idea of writing an essay, look for a scholarship with an equivalent task, like making a video or creating a piece of art instead.

Outside scholarships garner a lot of attention, but colleges and universities are actually the best place to look for scholarships—schools themselves grant $175 billion in scholarship money annually! It’s also worth noting that college awards are often larger than outside awards; 80% of external scholarships are less than $2,000, which looks great on paper but will only put a small dent in the cost of most colleges.

You have the best chance of winning a merit-based scholarship from a college or university. While super-selective schools with applicants fighting for admission often don’t offer merit-based scholarships—for example, none of the Ivy League colleges do—less selective colleges are often anxious to attract strong applicants. This makes applying to a college where your profile is particularly strong a smart strategy for getting a merit scholarship .

An overview of Michigan’s top four-year universities

University of michigan  .

The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, which has been ranked by Times Higher Education as the #1 public university in the US, is also Michigan’s oldest university.

For the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, with high rankings, also comes high costs! In-state undergraduate students can expect to pay an annual tuition of around $32,000, and out-of-state undergraduates can expect to pay up to $75,000.

Luckily, once you’ve been accepted to the University of Michigan, you can create a Scholarship Profile through the university’s Wolverine Access , which will allow you to be considered for all university scholarships that you’re eligible for.

Michigan State University

Michigan State University is the state’s largest university, and is commonly recognized for its education and agriculture-related programs.

In-state freshmen can expect to pay approximately $25,000 per year in tuition and fees, whereas out-of-state freshmen can expect to pay double that sticker cost. MSU offers scholarships for freshmen in all different groups: there are high-achieving scholarships and criteria-specific scholarships, as well as opportunities for Michigan residents, out-of-state students, and more. Plus, Pennsylvania and Ohio students who apply to MSU are automatically considered for the university’s Ohio and Pennsylvania Spartan Grants, which are worth up to $10,000.

Michigan Technological University

Michigan Tech is often ranked as one of the nation’s best universities in terms of return on investment. It is commonly known for the strength of its STEM-related major programs, such as mechanical engineering and computer science.

In terms of cost, Michigan Tech comes in at around $32,000 per year for in-state residents, and just over $53,000 per year for out-of-state residents. All admitted students are automatically considered for the universities’ merit-based scholarships , which are available for residents, non-residents, transfer students, Canadian students, and international students.

Community colleges in Michigan

There are 31 community colleges across the state of Michigan that enroll approximately 180,000 students each year. According to Best Colleges, Macomb Community College, the largest of the 31, offers over 200 degree and certificate courses, with costs that are approximately 25% of the tuition price at a Michigan four-year public university.

Other commonly recognized Michigan community colleges include Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Muskegon Community College, and Delta Community College.

Additional scholarship and financial aid resources for Michigan students

In addition to the various Michigan scholarships that are out there for prospective and current college students in the Wolverine state, there are also some great online resources out there for students looking to learn more about Michigan colleges and universities, paying for college, and financial aid as a whole.

MI Student Aid - The go-to place for students and families to access their Michigan Student Scholarships and Grants (MISSG) portal, learn about financial aid programs, eligibility criteria and deadlines, and search for local scholarships based on county .

1Michigan - A great resource guide for undocumented students in Michigan.

Michigan Promise Zones - If you noticed in the private scholarships section above, we featured two Promise scholarships for students in Detroit and Kalamazoo. Luckily, there are Promise scholarships available for students in many other zones of Michigan! Check out this resource to learn more about local Promise scholarship initiatives.

The 10 Best No Essay Scholarships

So many students have been there before.

They filled out their application to the best of their abilities, they applied to every internal scholarship imaginable at their hopeful college, and they calculated their odds of winning certain awards ad nauseum.

And then the acceptance letter comes in, and it’s cause for such a wonderful celebration. Getting into university is incredibly difficult, and you’ve done it.

But then there’s the second letter—the financial aid award letter. And for so many students, that award just isn’t enough to keep a student from navigating debt for many years to come.

Even for those students who can utilize internal, university-wide funding to mitigate their tuition costs, having external funding sources will always make a big difference in one’s attempts to finance their education.

But there are a lot of scholarships out there. And many of them will provide wonderful opportunities, but in order to make the most of one’s scholarship hunt to ensure they will receive enough external aid to impact their tuition costs, they’ll need to apply for a lot of scholarships.

School, work, and attempts to make the most of one’s teenage/early 20s can make the prospect of writing dozens of scholarship essays and answering a plethora of scholarship questions daunting.

But there are scholarships out there that provide actual money, which one can apply to in mere minutes. And although the odds of winning such scholarships can be slim, it never hurts to cast as wide of a net as possible.

And no-essay scholarships are a simple addition to one’s list of scholarship applications that increase one’s chances of receiving funding without increasing the number of hours one spends on the scholarship hunt.

As such, this article will break down 10 of the best no-essay scholarships out there.

In making this list, attention was given to the legitimacy of the scholarship organization, the amount of funding each scholarship provided, and the range of students who would be eligible to apply for the scholarship.

In no particular order, here are the ten best no-essay scholarships that will make easy additions to your scholarship list.

College Scholarship Concept

Big Future’s $40,000 Scholarship

Completing steps to prepare for college on Big Future include making a list of potential colleges, preparing for a standardized test, applying for colleges, and more.

Each year, roughly 25 winners are selected to receive the $40,000 scholarship. Winners’ profiles can be found here .

In order to apply, students need only create an account on Niche.com via the scholarship application.

Previous winners of the no-essay scholarship can be found on Niche’s website .

Nitro College No-Essay Scholarship

Nitro has a remarkably easy no-essay scholarship.

In order to apply, students do not even need to make an account on Nitro’s website, but instead merely have to provide the school they hope to attend and their contact information, and they are set to apply.

Each month, Nitro selects a winner of the $2,000 no-essay scholarship. Previous scholarship winners can be found at the bottom of the scholarship application page.

Nitro is a website dedicated to helping students understand all things financial regarding the college experience. This includes information on scholarships, loans, and tools to help calculate one’s cost of college.

CollegeXpress $10,000 No-Essay Scholarship

CollegeXpress hosts an annual no-essay scholarship competition , where one winner will receive a generous scholarship worth $10,000.

By making an account on the CollegeXpress website via the no-essay scholarship portal, students are automatically enrolled for the chance to win the $10,000 scholarship.

CollegeXpress is another organization that does not merely offer one no-essay scholarship but several.

For example, after applying for the $10,000 no-essay scholarship, students can apply for the $2,000, “Favorite Color” scholarshi p—where students only need to answer what their favorite color is in order to apply.

College Covered $5,000 No-Essay Scholarship

College Covered is an organization owned by Discover that seeks to aid students in financing their education while simultaneously promoting Discover’s student loans.

Because College Covered seeks to aid students in all things financial, it is no wonder that they also host a variety of scholarship competitions.

One of the largest of these scholarship competitions is the $5,000 no-essay Discover student loans no-essay scholarship.

In order to apply, all a student needs to do is provide their basic contact information.

$1,000 Dorm Survey Scholarship

ULoop is a hub for all odds and ends associated with college preparation.

Whether it be finding a roommate, a tutor, or finding a place to live, ULoop strives to be a marketplace for all of one’s miscellaneous college needs.

To best achieve this goal, ULoop naturally needs to harvest a fair amount of data regarding a wide array of colleges to provide accurate and up-to-date information.

This is where the $1,000 Dorm Survey Scholarship comes in.

To apply for this scholarship, students fill out a brief questionnaire regarding their experiences living in dorms at their particular university.

Alongside the dorm survey, students can also enter the off-campus apartment survey scholarship contest, which has an award of $1,000.

Winners of both scholarships are announced annually, and previous winners can be found on ULoop’s website .

Tallo $1,000 Scholarship

Tallo is an app where students can update schools, scholarship competitions, and employers regarding their various academic or professional achievements.

Through this platform, professionals and students connect to develop meaningful relationships.

By joining the Tallo app, students join a network of over 1 million students and professionals and have access to a scholarship database that includes over $20 billion in scholarships.

When a student joins Tallo, they are automatically enrolled in the $1,000, no-essay scholarship contest.

Joining Tallo and completing a profile is considered the application for this scholarship.

Scholarship Owl $7,000 Scholarship

Scholarship Owl is a scholarship database that both seeks to connect students with scholarship opportunities and to provide education to students regarding how scholarships work during the process.

Their $7,000 scholarship does not require an essay and merely requires that students create a profile on the Scholarship Owl website.

Although only 1 in 140,000 students win, approximately every applicant is considered equal during the scholarship drawing.

As such, no one student has a significantly greater chance of winning the no-essay scholarship compared to another.

ScholarshipPoints $10,000 Scholarship

ScholarshipPoints hosts a variety of no-essay scholarship contests, with the largest of these having a $10,000 value .

ScholarshipPoints operates by having students gain “scholarship points” by doing things like surveys, watching ads, or engaging with website sponsors.

Then, students spend these points to enter scholarship sweepstakes.

One point spent is the equivalent of 1 entry in the random drawing of scholarship winners.

The more points one spends in entering a scholarship, the more likely it is that a student will win the said scholarship.

As such, not only do Scholarship points offer the large, $10,000 no-essay scholarship, but several no-essay scholarships in which spending scholarship points takes the place of writing a formal scholarship application.

Even if the chances of winning can be slim for some of these scholarships, it is real money that real winners have received in the past.

I’m only a sophomore in high school, so I like having a lot to look at, and CX does a great job of picking colleges that meet my wants. It's a great website that I'll continue to use until it comes time for me to apply for colleges. I also like that it notifies me through email with options to look at. Thanks CX!

About Michigan Students

If you're looking for information about higher education in Michigan (e.g., student demographics, enrollment, student debt, and even Michigan scholarships), you've come to the right place. Read below to learn more about what graduating high school seniors, along with other students pursuing a degree, can look forward to in the coming years.

Michigan Student Demographics

Michigan's student population is not only diverse in terms of ethnicity but also in socioeconomic backgrounds. Many students come from families with varying income levels, and some may be the first in their families to pursue a college education .

Michigan has a population of just over 10 million people . According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 31.1% of Michigan residents aged 25 and over have a bachelor's degree or higher, based on data from 2018 to 2022. In the 2022-3023 school year, approximately 487,000 students were enrolled in college in Michigan.

Of the students enrolled in college, approximately 74% were aged 24 and under. The data show that 240,017 were enrolled in community college statewide.

Enrollment and Degree Attainment in Michigan

Enrollment and degree attainment rates are indicators of educational success in Michigan. According to the most recent data from the Census Bureau, Michigan's overall enrollment rate for post-secondary education remains steady , with a high percentage of students attending community colleges and four-year institutions.

However, degree attainment rates present a more concerning picture. Michigan has struggled to match the national average (~37.7%) in terms of bachelor's degree or higher attainment . This issue underscores the importance of scholarships and financial aid programs in increasing access to higher education and supporting students throughout their academic journey.

Student Debt in Michigan

While scholarships and financial aid can alleviate the burden of student debt, it remains a pressing issue in Michigan. The average student debt in Michigan is above the national average . The rising cost of tuition, coupled with limited financial aid options, has contributed to this growing problem.

In the 2019-20 academic year, 58% of Michigan's college graduates had student loans, averaging $29,863 in debt. Of this, 19% was nonfederal debt, mainly from private loans, which affected 11% of graduates, carrying an average debt of $29,745. Most graduates, 80%, came from public colleges, while 20% attended private nonprofit institutions, which generally incur higher costs and debt levels.

Because of the prevalence of student loans among Michigan college students, it is important that they get scholarships in order to pay for their college education. Financial aid is more than possible! You can read more about finding Michigan scholarships below on Bold.org .

Baruch college, an upward-mobility machine.

The New York school is praised as a model college in a new report on diversity in higher education.

Inside the lobby of Baruch College.

By David Leonhardt

City College of New York often serves as a nostalgic symbol of American higher education’s past. The college did not charge tuition for decades, and its students, many of them poor, went on to become Nobel laureates, chief executives, civil rights leaders and more. By contrast, higher education today can seem both less accessible and less rigorous.

But it turns out that the school that occupies City College’s original 19th-century campus, on the East Side of Manhattan, has done a fine job of living up to its predecessor’s legacy.

That school is Baruch College, and it is an upward-mobility machine.

More than 60 percent of Baruch students receive Pell grants, which means they typically come from the bottom half of the income distribution. About 75 percent of undergraduates are people of color. The average annual cost of attending Baruch for low-income students is less than $2,000. And Baruch’s six-year graduation rate is 74 percent, well above the national average.

When I asked S. David Wu, an engineering scholar who is Baruch’s president, about City College’s original vision of educating the masses, he told me, “In many ways, Baruch is realizing that vision, but in a 21st-century way.”

In today’s newsletter, I’ll tell you about a new report that tracks how other colleges are doing.

A worrisome decline

After Michael Bloomberg finished being mayor of New York City in 2013, he turned his attention to philanthropy and decided that increasing economic diversity in higher education was a priority. “America needs to have as big a pool of talented, hard-working, well-educated people as it can possibly get,” Bloomberg told me.

His main program is known as the American Talent Initiative, and its goal is to persuade colleges with high graduation rates to diversify. This morning, the group released its latest report , and it praises Baruch as a model college.

“There are very few colleges in the country like Baruch,” said Josh Wyner of the Aspen Institute, which helps run the American Talent Initiative. Indeed, among all U.S. colleges with a graduation rate above 70 percent, Baruch may be the most economically diverse. It both holds down tuition costs and creates clear pathways for students to earn degrees, Wyner said.

Other parts of the new report, however, are worrisome.

Bloomberg’s group set a goal almost a decade ago: Lift the annual enrollment of low- and moderate-income students at colleges with high graduation rates by 50,000 — or roughly 10 percent. The group planned to do so partly by building a membership organization where colleges could share strategies.

Initially, the progress was impressive. Enrollment jumped by more than 20,000 in the initiative’s first three years, putting it comfortably on pace to achieve the goal within a decade.

But momentum stalled in 2019-20. The reasons weren’t completely clear, but I’ve noticed that economic diversity often declines when college administrators aren’t paying close attention. Other priorities — sports teams, fund-raising, U.S. News’s rankings — take over. Covid made the situation worse, by exacerbating K-12 inequality and preventing some lower-income students from making it to college.

By fall 2021, all the early progress had been erased. Enrollment of lower-income students at colleges with high graduation rates was slightly below its 2015 level.

In response, the initiative got tougher. To remain members, college now must commit to specific lower-income enrollment levels, rather than vaguely promising to make progress. A small number of colleges have since dropped out. Among them, according to public records, were Penn State and Virginia Tech, as well as several private schools, including Wake Forest, which is among the country’s least economically diverse colleges, and Denison, in Ohio.

( This Times feature lets you look up economic diversity at nearly 300 colleges.)

But 125 colleges remained, including the entire Ivy League and the flagship state universities in California, Michigan, Texas and Wisconsin. About 15 schools more have recently joined. Baruch is among them, as are Colorado College, Illinois State and Towson.

At these member schools, lower-income enrollment has fully recovered from its recent decline. Updated data isn’t available for the roughly 200 other colleges with a graduation rate of at least 70 percent, but their trend is unlikely to be so positive:

Successful strategies

The new report cities several promising strategies for lifting diversity, such as:

Reduce so-called merit aid , which tends to go to affluent students, and direct scholarships to students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need. Boston University has recently done so.

Recruit more transfers from community colleges , where top students from modest backgrounds often start . Central Florida, Dayton, George Mason and the University of California all emphasize community-college transfers, and Princeton recently started a program.

Help students navigate higher education . Its bureaucracy can be so maddening that it keeps students from graduating. In response, Baruch has created an office called BOSS — Baruch One Stop Shop — where students can get help enrolling in classes or filling out aid forms. The college has also created cohorts of first-year students who take classes together and can help one another.

Baruch’s mission, Wu told me, is to educate a student body that resembles society at large — and increase upward mobility as a result. “Our diversity,” he said, “very much reflects the diversity of New York.”

Some colleges will soon charge $100,000 a year. My colleague Ron Lieber explains how it happened.

President Biden will announce student debt relief for millions of borrowers in a Wisconsin speech.

At michigan state university, frib professorial assistant earns goldwater scholarship.

Aaron Philip, a professorial assistant at FRIB, has earned a  Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship , becoming Michigan State University’s fifty-fifth Goldwater Scholar.

The Goldwater Foundation seeks sophomores and juniors committed to a research career in STEM fields with the potential for significant future contribution in their chosen field. The award provides $7,500 per year in funding for 51 students for undergraduate tuition and living expenses.

For the 2024 Goldwater Scholarship competition, 1,353 undergraduates were nominated by 446 institutions. Philip was among 438 scholars selected. The funding for the award is a collaboration between the U.S. Congress and the Department of Defense’s National Defense Education Program.

Philip is a second-year Michigan State University student from Los Alamos, New Mexico studying Physics and Advanced Mathematics in the College of Natural Science. He is also a member of the Honors College.

“I am honored and humbled to join the ranks of Spartan Goldwater Scholars. I share this recognition with my professors, research mentors, fellow students, and family who have all supported me and cultivated my passion to pursue a career in physics research,” Philip said. “Specifically, I would like to thank my research mentors over the past few years for their guidance, encouragement, and mentorship: Drs. Pablo Giuliani, Kyle Godbey, Witek Nazarewicz, Odelia Schwartz, Jianliang Qian, and Benjamin Nebgen.”

Philip is passionate about pursuing a career in research addressing micro-scale physics problems using analytic approaches, high performance computing, and AI. He has contributed to diverse research projects through his roles as a professorial assistant at FRIB, a Discovering America researcher with MSU’s Math Department, a student intern at the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and as a Computer Science Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) student at the University of Miami.

“Aaron joined our nuclear theory research group at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University in August 2022 as an undergraduate research assistant. An incoming first-year undergraduate student, he came extremely well prepared to directly work in forefront research and quickly managed to get acquainted with the necessary tools and background knowledge,” Kyle Godbey, a research assistant professor at FRIB, and Witold Nazarewicz, John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Physics and chief scientist at FRIB, said.

“During the course of his work, Aaron was able to reach a level of mastery of theoretical and computational methods on par with the current experts in the field. We consider ourselves to be incredibly lucky to have Aaron as a member of our research group and we have no doubt that he will go on to have a successful research career,” Godbey and Nazarewicz said.

“Aaron’s research at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams has been exemplary, and his mentorship activities embody the values of care and support that empower excellence at the MSU Honors College. We congratulate Aaron on being named a Goldwater Scholar,” Long said.

Philip has written two papers and presented at various conferences, including MSU’s Mathematics and Data Science Conferences, the University of Miami’s Computer Science REU Poster Presentation, and a LANL Lab Directed Research and Development Review. He also serves as a student tutor through the Mathematics Learning Center and at East Lansing High School.

“Congratulations to Aaron on this esteemed achievement,” said FRIB Laboratory Director Thomas Glasmacher. “Being named a Goldwater Scholar is a testament to Aaron’s dedication and outstanding efforts. We are so proud he is furthering his research pursuits at FRIB and honored to be part of his journey as he prepares to become a leader in our field.”
