SFU Beedie Supplementary Application
Arry pandher - january 29th, 2022.
Written by Joyce Chung and Matthew Tran
If you are applying to Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business , you will need to complete a Beedie supplementary application that includes two additional questions. Don’t worry about these extra components, though! Short and to the point, these two questions aim to assess your strengths and goals, and the ways the university can help you reach them. If you’re ready to write your Beedie supplementary application, read on!
- Writing to an audience of Beedie School of Business faculty and staff, please answer: To what activity do you dedicate most of your time? Why is this activity important to you, and how does engagement in this activity support your future aspirations? (maximum 300 words)
Make sure that you’re able to demonstrate your enthusiasm and passion in your essay. Show the committee that you care about your initiative or experience! To begin, your essay should start with a hook. A hook is a powerful statement or personal story 1-2 sentences long that showcases your strengths or values, or a time of your life in which you were motivated to make a change.
From there, use the STAR model to structure your essay! To learn more about STAR, check out this article !
Situation — Place, time and context. (1-2 sentences)
Task — Your role and goal in the story. (1 sentence)
Action — 80%% of your paragraph. Critical steps that you took to help complete the goal or volunteer initiative. (3-4 sentences)
Result — What was the outcome? What impact did you create? What did you learn? What skills did you develop? Make sure to quantify your results where you can (2-3 sentences).
For a stronger impact, you should focus on your most significant volunteer experience here. How did this activity provide you with the skills, qualities, and experience that you need to succeed in your future studies and career?
Here’s an example:
In January 2021, I became the President of the Student Council. 10 hours every week, we improve the lives of the student body by planning events to promote school spirit and create volunteer opportunities for our peers. Through this opportunity, I realized I could channel my mission to help my peers become involved in their communities and find their unique passions.
To raise awareness for homelessness in my city, I coordinated a sandwich fundraiser spanning three weeks. I assigned tasks to my fellow members and assisted in managing our Slack workplace, organizing our staffing schedules, and onboarding 15 new volunteers from the student body. Within a month, we raised $800 and distributed 1,000 sandwiches.
Engaging in this organization has helped me develop my management and human resources skills. Helping build this community of youth leaders across BC has taught me how to lead with confidence and maximize positive impact, preparing me for the Beedie School of Business.
2*. Do you have any additional comments that may assist when adjudicating your application? Feel free to disclose any extenuating circumstances, barriers, or challenges you’re facing or have overcome that have impacted your academics or extracurriculars. (maximum 200 words)*
Extenuating circumstances can include financial, familial, or health challenges, or any other causes that have affected your academic achievement of ability to participate in extracurricular activities. You are recommended to demonstrate your perseverance and character in this section, as the Beedie School of Business admires students who are resilient and innovative!
The recommended structure for this question is a condensed version of the STAR model:
Situation (can be merged with Task) — What was this activity about and what was its goal? (1 sentence)
Task (can be merged with Situation) — What was your role and main responsibility? (1 sentence)
Action — What were the steps you took to fulfill your role and achieve your goal? (1-2 sentences)
Result — What were the positive outcome of your involvement in this activity? How have you impacted the lives of the people involved? What are the tangible results of your actions? (1-2 sentences)
Some points to consider before you respond to this question are:
- Do you have any health conditions that would affect your studies at SFU?
- Did you encounter any challenges if your family moved to Canada from another country?
- If you don’t have competitive grades, this is your chance to explain your situation to the committee!
I moved to Canada from Iran in July of 2018. My parents spent much of their lives working to create a better future for me and my younger brother. My mother has been unable to work since our relocation to Canada because her degree and experience as a physician in Iran are not transferable. My father has been unable to work at a reliable capacity because he is self-employed and does not generate steady income every month. While my and my brother’s education remains the main goal of our immigration, acquiring more debt has become more challenging with time. In a worst-case scenario, this may cause us to lose our home.
I have made a goal to maintain my part-time job as a tutor in order to support my family. Over two semesters, I held one-on-one classes on a weekly basis and developed material to improve their mathematical abilities. Through constant support and encouragement, I helped my students raise their academic averages by 15 percent and noticed an increase in their passion for the subject.
I know that going to the SFU Beedie School of Business is the right step towards my goals. However, my family’s unstable financial situation makes my enrolment a very difficult decision. Obtaining a degree in Business and building a career as an entrepreneur is a challenging choice to make while striving to help my family overcome their financial difficulties. Through your support, I will be able to help them restore themselves financially, prepare them for my brother’s post-secondary costs, and pursue my lifelong goal to initiate an organization that reduces poverty in Metro Vancouver.
To bring both questions together, here is a winning SFU Beedie Supplementary application ! Take note of the specificity of this student’s circumstances and goals!

General requirements
You must have attempted a minimum of 24 units of transferable post-secondary course work, and may transfer up to a maximum of 60 units toward your degree program. If you have attempted 9 - 23 units and are in good academic standing (you have a minimum GPA of a 2.0) you will be required to meet high school application deadlines and admission requirements.
You are required to declare all previously attempted high school and post-secondary studies. If you are not in good standing and/or have a GPA of less than 2.00 ( 60%), you will not be admitted.
Admission is competitive. In the past, the average for admission has ranged from a 2.50 GPA to a 3.50 GPA depending on the program. Note: an admission average is calculated on all transferable courses attempted. If you repeat a transferable course for admission, the highest course attempt will be used in the GPA calculation.
In addition to the general and program-specific admission requirements (listed below), you must meet our English language admission requirement and Quantitative and analytical skills requirement . If you do not meet these requirements on your college or university work, we may request your high school transcript.
Application dates and deadlines
Note that different deadlines are in place for Preservice Professional Programs and the School for the Contemporary Arts. See https://www.sfu.ca/students/admission/apply.html
Transfer credit
After you have completed your application, transfer credit will be applied to your record during the admission evaluation process. Transfer credit appeals will only be assessed after you have accepted your offer of admission. We may request that you provide detailed course outlines issued from your post-secondary institution, which should include:
- a statement of course objective(s)
- the duration/number of weeks (excluding final exam period)
- hours per week of lecture (laboratory/tutorial/seminar/studio work) and the hours per week of required open laboratory work or open studio work
- the method of evaluation and grading
- the textbook(s) used
- the amount of credit/units earned
Please use this form to submit a transfer credit appeal.
Information for applicants from BC colleges
A BC/Yukon transfer guide listing all first and second year transferable courses along with the SFU equivalent is available at www.bctransferguide.ca . Courses not listed in the transfer guide are not transferable.
BC Associate of Arts or Science degree holders will receive preference in admission, with a GPA 0.25 points less than the GPA required for regular transfer, but not less than 2.00 overall. If individually assigned transfer credit totals less than 60 units, the remainder will be general elective credit.
If you are not in good academic standing or have been required to withdraw from another post-secondary institution, you will be considered for admission only if you have attempted a minimum of 24 units of transferable course work since being required to withdraw. A GPA on the further course work of at least .50 points above the regular admission GPA will be required.
Information for applicants from universities
For university transfer, we support the Pan-Canadian Protocol on transferability of first and second year courses from any recognized Canadian university.
Information for applicants from colleges or institutes of applied arts and technology

Admission is determined on an individual basis and transfer credit granted is very limited.
Information for applicants not in good academic standing or required to withdraw
If you are not in good standing or have been required to withdraw from another post-secondary institution, you will be considered for admission only if you have attempted a minimum of 24 units of transferable course work since being required to withdraw. Students UBC Sauder or SFU Beedie tips for applying?
Discussion in ' Employment and Students ' started by Geje , Jun 16, 2012 .
Hi, I'm planning to apply to SFU Beedie or UBC Sauder since my goal is to be a CA next year. I'm currently in grade 11 and I heard there is something called a broad based application or supplemental application or something along those lines. But I need to know some tips on what they are looking for...So far I only done a couple volunteering events, I got a job for a month, won some awards and will be volunteering this summer. So far my marks are around 87-89%. I only know one person who was my in class tht got into SFU Beedie with 88%. If you can, can you please tell me what organizations you were apart of that was impressive on these application or any other tips. Note I'm not athletically, musically or artsy talented.

UBC Sauder, anything with an 8 starting doesn't cut it for them. The broad based application at UBC Sauder is really ridiculous. Get a 94% and a lot of leadership experience and then you'll be almost guaranteed a spot. Sauder kids are stuck up because this really coats them up, I mean, you hear people at SFU Beedie cause they didn't get into UBC Sauder not the other way around. It's unfortunate... =/ Could you list your job, awards and extracurriculars? I don't want to be mean but it's a little late to really start something big, unless you can do it everyday...? They base it on leadership more than just being a follower. SFU Beedie, I'm not sure but my grad year, everyone who was rejected from UBC Sauder got into SFU Beedie so I'm going to assume that it's not difficult lol but I could be wrong. (Average needed to be at least 86-90% and got in with a not so impressive list of extracurriculars compared to UBC Sauder students).

They really did mess things up by removing provincials eh? So much simpler when I graduated. 1. You're short on time, get started ASAP. I suggest researching exactly what UBC & SFU are looking for. Find out what's on the supplemental application in advance and find activities that fulfill their criteria. You need to play the game, but always be genuine and don't pad. Try finding things that you like to do, it's more fun and you're less likely to look like you're "doing it for the hours". 2. Find or create opportunities where you can demonstrate leadership. 3. Think of less conventional things to put on your application (eg: unique life and travel experiences). They're often neglected and downplayed by students but some admission committees do value those things. 4. Don't get hung up about school brand names. Only parents (especially Asian ones) and high school kids care. Friend of a friend got 100% on practically all his provincials and chose a BBA at SFU over a BCom at UBC despite getting into both programs. 5. If you don't get in, it's not the end of the world because there are many alternative pathways with the same endpoint. You can transfer in after first year, diploma programs, other schools, etc.

Extra-circulars are super important! I know someone who got 95% and she got rejected really early, not sure why but a 94% doesn't necessarily guarantee you a spot. On the other hand, someone got in with a 89%. . . There are some really bright people over at SFU who should have gotten into Sauder but didn't and there are some that don't really deserve to get into Sauder but got in. I say luck is also an important factor.

Hi there, I'm a first year student at SFU Beedie. I know for a fact that multiple students have been admitted to UBC Sauder with high 80's this year so you definitely have a chance at admission with your grades. Admission at Sauder and Beedie has definitely been very competitive this year and will continue to be in the future. Whether you'll get in or not will be based off how well you are able to sell yourself in your personal profile/broad based application. Not to scare you or anything but a friend of mine who applied with me to SFU Beedie got rejected with 96% average because his extracurriculars + broad based application was heavily lacking. And to comment on the whole Sauder vs Beedie thing, I urge you to do your research on both schools as they are both fantastic in their own ways. The "Sauder Bandwagon" is absolutely ridiculous.

i will share my own experience. I didn't apply to beedie however I got into sauder and desaultels and queens business. I'm currently in grade 12 with average 95. Try to do leadership peer tutoring is really good, they like people who organize stuff like i started a guitar club in grade 12 and I didn't do much in grade 11 hover I do have a job where I am a shift manager for like a year now and I've peer tutored for two years. It's really about how you portray yourself, whentering writing suplex entry essays all of your activities need to be shown from the perspective they want. Focus on global and leadership. Also lol for the key words that they mention on the website and incorporate those. get an adult to look over your essays, and I can't stress enough how important is submitting all your applications early! I really hope that this helped good luck! Also I didn't do this but I know some take online courses to bump up their average just make sure it's in the accepted courses list of the universities you want to go to. And go talk to the admission officer in the faculty makes a huge difference to see if you are a right fit and if you want to go to that university. Good luck!

The beedie application result will always come first before the other programs. For example, when I applied to SFU, my first choice was beedie and the second choice was economics. Basically, if you get into Beedie, theyll let you know asap before the other programs you applied for. Hey! I'm waiting on my supplemental application response too.

Beedie supplements portfolio. Im trying to get into beedie via the supplement applications since my gpa is only 2.95. I was woundering what kind of volunteering they look for. I already been doing social media marketing for small restaurants, so thats something i have going on. Would also like to know your experience with beedie applications.
I've seen some people during my high school year who had good grades (90%+) who got rejected from Beedie by not taking the supplemental application seriously. So yes, there is weight to it as there's many other applicants with lower GPAs who'd want to be part of Beedie. If your GPA is bad it's the only way into the faculty.
