As one of the most prestigious schools in the U.S., Yale is known worldwide for its stellar programs. The Yale School of Medicine MD program is arguably one of the most well-regarded programs the school offers, receiving high rankings from several publications each year.

Yale School of Medicine Programs

Yale offers several different medical programs to fit your educational aspirations. Yale’s offerings include:

• MD/PhD Program
• PA Program (In person or online)
• PhD, Master’s, and Joint MD Programs
• Certificate in Global Medicine
• Public Health Programs

The Yale School of Medicine also offers several dual-degree programs in collaboration with other Yale schools. For example, med students can achieve a dual MD/JD, MD/MBA, or MD/MDiv degree.

Yale Medical School Requirements

Here are the Yale School of Medicine admissions requirements. It’s important to note that while you may meet all requirements, your application must be competitive for your best chance of acceptance. 

Prerequisite Courses

The pre-medical education requirements for Yale Medical School are:

• “Attendance for three academic years, or the equivalent, at an accredited college, university, or institute of technology.
• Satisfactory completion of the following courses, including laboratory work:
• General Biology or Zoology (2 semesters)
• General Chemistry (2 semesters)
• Organic Chemistry (1 semester)
• Biochemistry (1 semester - laboratory recommended, but not required)
• General Physics (2 semesters).”

You must complete your Yale Med School prerequisite courses at a U.S., U.K., or Canadian institution. AP courses don’t fulfill these requirements. 

Like most U.S. medical schools, Yale requires applicants to submit MCAT scores. For 2023 applicants, the earliest submittable MCAT score is from January 2020 onward. Yale matriculants have a a median MCAT score of 522.

AMCAS Application 

Yale’s application is the same one you send to all medical schools through the AMCAS website. After selecting Yale School of Medicine and submitting your application, you’ll be invited to complete a secondary application.

Secondary Application/Essays

All Yale MD and MD/PhD applicants are invited to complete a secondary application via email within two weeks of submitting their primary AMCAS application. This is the secondary essay portion of your application, where you’ll respond to two questions in an essay format.

Letters of Recommendation

Yale School of Medicine recommends submitting a recommendation from your school’s pre-medical committee . If your school doesn’t have one, you must submit three recommendation letters from individuals who are qualified to speak knowledgeably about your accomplishments and abilities.

At least one letter from a science professional is recommended. Students must send their letters through the AMCAS Letter Service .

Students with strong primary and secondary applications will be invited to interview at Yale. Interview invitations are sent via email. You should always send a thank-you note to your interviewer via email after your meeting. 

Once you’ve completed these steps, all that’s left to do is wait to hear back from Yale. All applicants can expect to receive an admissions decision by mid-March and must respond by late April.

The Insider’s View on Yale Medical School's Pre-clinical years

How to Get Into Yale Medical School – Know the Curriculum:

Curriculum Overview:

During your time as a Yale SOM student, your grades are pass/fail. You do pre-clinical work your first 1.5 years and then start your clinical clerkships January of your 2nd year. You have flexibility as to when to take your USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2.

Pre-Clinical Years:

Your pre-clinical years are focused on basics science. You also have a longitudinal clinical experience and medical coaching experience. The curriculum IS NOT organ-based. In the Interprofessional Longitudinal Clinical Experience, you train alongside the School of Nursing and the PA program to learn physical exam skills. During your second year, you are in a group of 4 and are paired with a coach to teach you a standardized history and physical exam.

The first year consists of the following blocks:

• Scientific Foundations
• Genes and Development
• Attacks and Defenses
• Homeostasis
• Energy and metabolism

Taking Time Off:

Many MD candidates at Yale take time off to pursue their other passions. Some students we know have done basic or clinical research. Others have written a book. Others have done work in New York for medical journalism.

Clinical Year Curriculum:

Yale is extremely flexible with the clinical clerkship curriculum . They group core clerkships together in themes: medical approach to the patient (internal medicine and neurology); surgical approach to the patient (surgery and emergency medicine); Women’s and Children’s Health (OB/GYN and Pediatrics), and biopsychosocial approach to health (Primary care, psychiatry, and pediatrics).

In each block, the curriculum makes sure you see patients both inpatient and outpatient. There are two-week vacation periods after 2 of the blocks.

During your last year, you are required to take one 4-week sub-internship. The rest of the time, you can choose to do research or clinical electives.

YSM's American Medical Student Association Chapter Receives Prestigious AMSA Award

Student leaders of the ysm amsa chapter.

Yale School of Medicine's (YSM) chapter of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) has been awarded the prestigious AMSA 2024 Paul Wright Chapter Success Award. AMSA’s mission is “to educate and empower diverse future physicians to become unapologetic advocates for equitable healthcare and foster generations of culturally respectful leaders.”

Named after AMSA Executive Director Emeritus Paul R. Wright, this annual award goes to chapters “that have promoted AMSA’s mission of inspiring future physicians through local events, innovative programming, leadership development or calls to action.” The award description also provides, “The emphasis of this award is chapter commitment to improving member solidarity by increasing awareness, recruitment, and involvement in their chapters." The award will be presented at the AMSA national conference in Washington, DC in June.

In applying for the award, the YSM chapter stated, “This year, AMSA at Yale focused on expanding into the community by producing op-eds, advertising at various community events, and spearheading efforts to promote entrepreneurial ideas to encourage students to envision innovative solutions to the most pressing problems facing physicians and health care workers today.”

Highlights of the Yale chapter’s work in the last year include:

• Hosting Innovation Networking Night with over 200 attendees. This was a university-wide venture and med tech networking night with Yale Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, in collaboration with the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking and the Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy.
• Funding a semi-finalist team to compete at AMSA’s annual national medical simulation competition.
• Hosting a theater for social change performance on abortion care at AMSA’s Future Physicians for Change conference.
• Publishing research on national gun control and voting laws.
• Advocating for resident unions and disability rights for medical students.
• Conducting women's health sessions on abortion care at YSM.
• Hosting a documentary film screening of At Your Cervix and panel discussion in collaboration with YSM’s Office of Medical Education and Program for Biomedical Ethics.

The current YSM AMSA leadership includes: first-year MD students Uma Alappan; Shadrack Frimpong, PhD, MPH; Jaiveer Singh; and Isabel Wang. Second-year MD students Pavan Khosla and Ryan Sutherland, MPhil, MPH, are the immediate past leaders of the YSM chapter.

The YSM AMSA chapter concluded their award application by stating, “As a chapter of scholar-activists committed to shaping the future of medicine to be more equitable and just for all, our continued advocacy and education campaigns for the upcoming year will be even more ambitious. As a small but growing chapter, we have been fortunate to have a dedicated group of volunteers that have helped make this year a memorable one, and we look forward to working to continue to expand our efforts in the community beyond Yale to promote the values and vision of AMSA as disruptive innovators, social justice advocates, and future physicians dedicated to making the change we wish to see in this world happen.”
