Everything you need to know about flying EasyJet

Traveling on a l ow-cost carrier probably isn't your favorite way to cruise the skies, but if you play your cards right, your experience doesn't have to be all that bad. After all, the allure of scoring that super-cheap fare may outweigh the negatives -- like being nickel-and-dimed for all the extras.

To help those of you who are considering purchasing a fare on low-cost carrier EasyJet (or are wondering if you should), TPG is here to tell you exactly what you need to know about flying the airline so you can have a pleasant travel experience. Check in beforehand or at the airport

EasyJet is one of the few low-cost carriers that won't charge you to check in or print your boarding pass at the airport. But if you aren't checking a bag, you can save time by checking in ahead of time and getting a mobile boarding pass. To check in online, go to the EasyJet website under "Manage Bookings" or use the free app using your booking reference. You'll be prompted to enter your surname and booking reference, then, follow the instructions to download or send the mobile boarding pass to your phone.

Web check-in is available between 30 days and two hours before the flight, giving you plenty of time to get your boarding pass printed or downloaded before you take off. Be prepared to enter advanced passenger information during check-in, which can include details like nationality, passport number, birth date and more. And remember, if you change your booking in any way (select new seats, change the date, name, add an infant or special assistance), you'll have to reprint your boarding pass or download it again.

It's actually okay if you spell your name wrong

If you notice you made a typo when entering your name, you can change it for free. However, if you want to give your ticket to another person entirely, you'll have to pay a fee of $34 to change it online if it's 60 days or more before travel. If it's 60 days or less before departure, the fee is $69. These changes (and any others) to your booking can be made in the Manage Booking section on the EasyJet app or webpage.

Take advantage of EasyJet's impressive app

In 2019, EasyJet's app launched an interesting function: voice flight bookings . You can speak your departure city, destination and travel dates into your mobile's microphone and voilà -- the app will pull up available flights.

This new feature is in addition to the app's Book with Instagram feature that's already available. Using it, you can upload a screenshot of a destination you'd like to visit that you've snapped from social media. If EasyJet flies there (or close by), it will find the location and show you flight options.

You don't need a stamp

Unlike low-cost carrier Ryanair, which mandates non-EU/EEA passengers must have their travel documents checked and stamped at the Ryanair Visa/Document Check Desk before certain flights, EasyJet has no such rule.

If you have your boarding pass and you're not checking a bag, the airline recommends you arrive 60 minutes before your scheduled departure and proceed directly to security. If you need to check a bag, it's best to arrive a minimum of 90 minutes ahead of your scheduled flight to most destinations; however, this may be different when flying to or from spots like Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco and Serbia.

So, make sure to check the EasyJet website ahead of time when traveling between those countries. Also, note that bag drop closes 40 minutes before the departure time for most flights (60 minutes if departing from the aforementioned countries). And because many airports have self bag drops, be prepared to tag your bag yourself in some cases.

Know the carry-on luggage rules

All passengers can bring one bag on board with a maximum size of 22x18x10 inches including handles and wheels. There is no weight limit, but you must be able to lift your bag into the overhead bin.

Travelers who have purchased an extra-legroom/up front seat, FLEXI fare or hold an EasyJet Plus card can bring an added personal item to place under the seat with a maximum size of 18x14x8 inches.

In some cases, the airline staff may be lax to enforce this one-bag-only rule if you are flying with one bag and one small personal item, like a purse. In other cases, the staff at the gate may strongly enforce the rule. So, if you decide to push the limit and travel with an additional personal item that's not included in your fare, be prepared to put the smaller item inside your carry-on bag if asked, in order to avoid paying extra fees.

According to EasyJet, there is only room for 70 cabin bags in the airplanes' overhead lockers. All remaining cabin bags will be checked and can be collected from the baggage carousel on arrival. So, if you want to be certain your baggage travels with you in the cabin, pack a backpack that can fit under the seat or purchase speedy boarding to be one of the first passengers on the plane.

Know the checked luggage rules

Each traveler can bring three checked bags weighing under either 33 pounds, 51 pounds or 71 pounds. Checked baggage fees are dependent on route, flight and time of booking. If purchased online, prices range from $10 to $48 for bags weighing up to 33 pounds and from $21 - $52 for those weighing more than 33 pounds up to 51 pounds. An extra $17 for every 7 pounds of weight is added for bags weighing more than 51 pounds on up to 71 pounds.

Passengers can only pay to check the lower-priced 33-pound or less bag online. If you wait to pay for your bag at the airport, you'll be charged $55 at the bag-drop desk or $69 at the boarding gate for a bag up to 51 pounds. Additional weight can only be purchased online in increments of 7 pounds, either at initial booking or post-booking. If your bag weighs more than the amount you pre-purchased, expect to pay an extra $12 per pound above the pre-booked weight.

A final option is to take advantage of EasyJet's Hands Free option. This means that you check your carry-on bag at the bag drop, allowing you to navigate the airport and security checks efficiently without dragging a bag with you. The bags also reportedly arrive first off the baggage carousel. This service costs $10 per person, or $22 for a family or group of three to six passengers.

Here are TPG tips for checked baggage:

• Always weigh your bag before traveling.
• Pack a small travel scale to weigh it again before returning home.
• Book and pay for your checked luggage online to avoid extra charges for doing so at the airport.
• Ensure your checked baggage doesn't exceed the maximum size. The length + width + height must total under 108in.

Pay for your extras in advance

It's clear from reading the baggage rules that purchasing in advance will save you money. You should consider purchasing your seats and other extras in advance too, not only to save money but to avoid hassle and disappointment later on. Each aircraft has up-front seats, extra legroom seats and regular seats. Prices for seat selection range from $3- $11 for standard seats to $11 - $41 for front, extra legroom or overwing seats. FLEXI fares or EasyJet Plus have seat selection included.

If you choose not to pay extra for seats and are traveling with a group, be sure to check in as early as possible (remember, you can do so 30 days in advance) for the best chance of being seated together. Unfortunately, speedy boarding isn't available as a standalone purchase, but it's available to travelers with an EasyJet Plus card, FLEXI ticket or an up-front or extra-legroom seat.

Consider a FLEXI fare or EasyJet Plus

FLEXI fares allow changes to flight dates and times, plus a free 51-pound checked bag, dedicated bag drop, speedy boarding, Fast Track security at selected airports, a seat at the front of the airplane, an under-seat bag in addition to your cabin bag and a $10 (or currency equivalent) bistro voucher to spend onboard.

EasyJet Plus membership costs $275 per year and includes allocated seating every time you fly, dedicated bag-drop desks, Fast Track security at select airports, speedy boarding, an additional cabin bag and more. This option may be worth it if you fly EasyJet several times per year.

EasyJet partners with other airlines to fly you, well, everywhere

EasyJet flies to over 150 destinations across Europe and North Africa. They also partner with airlines like Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Norwegian, Singapore, Virgin and several others to help serve destinations the airline doesn't fly to itself, like spots in North America, the Caribbean, Asia and beyond. Be prepared

If you haven't flown EasyJet in a while, you may be pleasantly surprised. Compared to some of the more bare-bones low-cost carriers, EasyJet can seem like a delight -- they even have a seatback pocket!

But don't get too excited. The seats don't recline and have a pitch of a mere 30 inches. All food and beverages are at an added cost, including water. You may have to line up for a while before boarding in order to board early enough to store your carry-on in the overhead bin.

To ensure you'll have a comfortable flight make sure to bring:

• Noise-canceling headphones
• Water (post-security)
• A neck pillow, if you plan to sleep
• A travel scarf or blanket, if you get cold

Read the fine print

This EasyJet cheat sheet will definitely help you prepare for your flight, but remember, the airline can change their policies at any time -- baggage limitations, check-in procedures or fees, etc. So be sure to read the conditions of your fare and ticket before purchasing. It's also a good idea to know and understand your rights as a flyer in case of delays, flight cancellations and strikes. If you’re planning to travel with just a carry-on , you’ll need to be up to speed with airline carry-on policies.  Specifically, the various rules and regulations each carrier has for what you can and cannot “carry on” to the plane.   Each airline’s rules are different, so don’t just assume what works for one will work for all airlines.

If you are going to be flying a low-cost carrier, like easyJet, you will need to be aware of their specific guidelines for carry-on sizes, liquids, and other unique items that you may want to bring on board.

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about easyJet’s carry-on policy. This includes easyJet carry-on size and weight limits, personal items, liquids, pets, prohibited items, and other rules and restrictions you should know before boarding your flight.

easyJet Carry On Size & Weight Limits

easyJet allows everyone to bring one small cabin bag on board (up to 45 x 36 x 20cm, including any handles or wheels), which must fit under the seat in front of you. There is no weight limit for this bag as long as you can carry and store it yourself.

If you have booked an Upfront or Extra legroom seat you can also bring an additional large cabin bag on board. The maximum size of this bag is 56 x 45 x 25 cm (including any handles or wheels) and it must be able to fit in the overhead storage bin. These seats can be selected at the time of booking, or at any time before your check-in via the Manage Bookings section of the easyJet website.

easyJet size requirements for a carry-on are:

• Dimensions for carry-on baggage: max. 56 x 45 x 25 cm
• Dimensions for personal items: max. 45 x 36 x 20 cm

If the bag is too big, you’re going to have to pay a fee, so it’s always better to know your bag size and the limitations in advance. See the table on easyJet’s fees and charges page for full details, as they can get fairly expensive.

easyJet does not have a weight limit for carry-on bags, as long as you can carry and store them yourself. The weight issue applies to check baggage since they weigh your checked bags when you check in for your flight.

The weight limit for a checked bag is 23kg. You can buy extra weight in 3kg units, up to a maximum of 32kg per bag. No single item can weigh more than 32kg.

Fits 80% of International Airlines* as a Carry-On

easyJet doesn’t clarify what it considers a personal item. They just state that you are allowed to bring on a “cabin bag” which would include things like backpacks, purses, laptop cases, etc.

They do make an exception for infants. If you’re traveling with an infant (under the age of 2) who will be seated on your lap, you are allowed to bring an additional baby changing bag with you (max. 45 x 36 x 20 cm). This bag must also be placed under the seat in front of you.

However, while they don’t charge you for the extra bag you get to bring with the infant, they will charge you to have an infant on your lap – normally around $34 each way 🙁

Carry-On Liquids: easyJet Liquids Policy

The rules for carry-on liquids are set by the TSA in the US and the EASA and European Commission in Europe.  easyJet doesn’t have its own specific Liquids Policy, they just enforce the rules and policies of the Authorities.

• Containers with liquids and gel-like substances may hold up to 100 ml (maximum capacity must be printed on the container).
• All containers must be carried in a plastic bag (transparent, resealable, max. capacity of 1 liter). One bag per person.
• The bag must be presented separately at security. Take your liquids out of your carry-on baggage at the security screening point and present them separately. In exceptional cases, liquids may be opened in the course of security checks and removed from their outer packaging.
• Liquid duty-free goods purchased at an international airport or on board an aircraft outside the EU must be transported in a tamper-proof, certified bag on connecting flights via an EU airport. The proof of purchase must be inside the bag and the bag must be sealed by the retailer.
• Medicine and special food (e.g. baby food) can be carried outside the plastic bag and must also be presented at security.

Below is a table that provides some examples of Non-solid Food and Personal Items that are considered “liquids”:

Each passenger may carry liquids, gels, and aerosols in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters. Each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of liquids, gels, and aerosols. Common travel items that must comply with the 3-1-1 liquids rule include toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, and lotion.

Any liquid that does not meet the TSA 3-1-1 rule will either have to be checked with your luggage or will be thrown away at the security checkpoint.

There are two different scenarios pertaining to food: 

• The food you bring with you to the airport, and
• The food you buy at the airport after you have gone through security.

An important thing to note is the classification of liquid foods vs. solid foods.  Certain liquids cannot be brought through security, so you have to be aware of the rules for bringing liquids through security and if your food is considered a “liquid”.

The general rule is “If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, then it’s considered a liquid or gel”.   This means your food may be considered a liquid and will fall under the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule , which mandates that any liquid, gel, cream, aerosol, or paste in a carry-on must be 3.4 ounces or less, and fit in one quart-size resealable bag (only one such bag is allowed per passenger).

These rules regarding liquids that have been established by the TSA are also followed in Europe and most other countries including Canada, the U.K. Japan, China, Australia, etc.

Once you get through security, you can bring just about any food on the plane that you buy at the airport.

Animals are not allowed on easyJet flights, with the exception of registered guide and assistance dogs.

Prohibited Items and Dangerous Goods

There are certain items that are considered dangerous and classified as hazardous material.  Dangerous goods are prohibited from both your carry-on and checked bags on all flights.  These rules are not specific to any airline and are mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration and European Aviation Safety Agency.

Items considered  “dangerous goods”  are prohibited under easyJet’s carry-on policy and include the following:

• Firearms and ammunition
• Stunning devices, mace, tear gas, and  pepper spray
• Poisonous, infectious, or radioactive substances
• Sharp or pointed objects (knives, swords, cutting instruments,  razors , ice skates, carpet knives, metal scissors, box cutters, or similar items) 
• Camping equipment containing flammable liquids or gasses 
• Flammable liquids, including gasoline and kerosene
• Self-Balancing devices such as hoverboards, including electric skateboards, balance boards, and gravity boards
• Medical or liquid oxygen 
• Torch lighters , lighter fluid, strike-anywhere matches, and fire starters
• Wet-cell batteries

The following items  are not considered “dangerous goods”  and are allowed when packaged properly, in accordance with FAA regulations

• Hiking or trekking poles
• Hair dryer/Straightener
• Sunscreen/bug spray
• Food as a carry on
• Fishing hooks
• Fragile glass items

Simple Flying

A brief guide to the easyjet plus program.

The membership comes at a cost but includes benefits such as speedy boarding, an additional cabin bag, and free changes to an earlier flight.

• The easyJet Plus program offers various benefits, including free seat selection, speedy boarding, and access to a dedicated priority counter for members with hold luggage.
• Members can also enjoy Fast Track security lane access at 47 airports and have the ability to change flights for free to an earlier flight on the same day.
• The membership costs £215 per year, and additional memberships can be purchased at a discounted rate.

Frequent flyer programs do not generally come to mind when considering low-cost carriers. However, quite a few programs exist with varying degrees of benefits. The easyJet Plus program allows guests to access features like a dedicated gag drop, Fast Track security, Speedy boarding, free allocated seating, and complimentary same-day flight changes for an annual fee.

What does it provide?

The feature most useful for many travelers is the ability to choose any available seat on the aircraft for free. This includes seats at the front, extra leg room, and exit row seats for passengers hoping to disembark quickly or secure overhead storage space. Speedy boarding is also included both when booking online and at the gate by showing your virtual easyJet Plus membership card.

Passengers bringing hold luggage to the airport area will also benefit from access to a dedicated priority counter for Plus members. As a low-cost carrier, easyJet now charges for all overhead cabin bags and suitcases.

All passengers are only entitled to one small cabin bag (up to 45 x 36 x 20 cm), which must be stowed under the seat in front of you. As an easyJet Plus member, you would be allowed to bring a large overhead cabin bag (max 56 x 45 x 25 cm) for no additional fee.

Security is also a breeze with Fast Track security lane access at 47 airports across the network. When checking in online, members can enter their Plus card number to receive a Fast Track security barcode on their boarding pass, which can be used at both manual and automatic Fast Track security queues.

Passengers can also change flights for free to an earlier flight on the same say. This must be done by calling the dedicated Customer Service team to check availability, allowing you to transfer onto an earlier flight departing or arriving at a different nearby airport.

All London airports served by easyJet are included, as well as several airports serving other cities in the same region as listed below:

• London (Gatwick, Luton, Southend, or Stansted)
• Paris (Paris Charles de Gaulle, Paris Orly)
• Milan (Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa, Milan Orio al Serio)
• Central Scotland (Edinburgh, Glasgow)
• North West England (Liverpool, Manchester)

Plus members are also guaranteed the lowest price on a flight from the time of booking. If you find the same flight for sale at a lower price, you will be refunded the difference as a flight voucher for future travel with the carrier. The flight vouchers are valid for six months from the date of issue, and the price promise does not apply where the lower fare is part of a promotional 'sale' offer launched after booking.

Other features include a 10% discount on EAT.DRINK.SHOP purchases of inflight food, beverages, or duty-free products onboard your easyJet flight. The program also has a partnership with the website Holiday Extras to provide discounts for lounges and airport parking.

Members can enjoy a discount of 20% on UK lounges and 10% on EU lounges, and an onsite parking discount of 15% or an offsite parking discount of 20% at select airports.

How much does it cost?

The easyJet Plus membership costs £215 per year. Additional memberships for an adult, for instance, a spouse or partner, can be purchased on the same account for a discounted rate of £185. Child Memberships for those aged 2-17 come in at £135 (children under two are included with an adult), and additional Adult Memberships can be added at full price.

The membership benefits are personal to the cardholder. One can still add non-members to an easyJet flight booking, but they won't be able to enjoy the same membership benefits. There is a 14-day cooling off period from the date of purchase, where guests can cancel their membership for a full refund.

Duty Free inflight onboard | EZY-U2 | EasyJet

Duty Free shopping on Ryanair, easyjet, Vueling or Wizz is not widespread, because even though these low-cost airlines dominate the European skies, most of their destinations are within the EU, where actual duty free sales are not permitted.

Ryanair do fly to Morocco, Norway and soon to Israel, easyjet also covers Israel, Wizz eastern europe and Vueling southern Europe. Most cover Switzerland, but perhaps three-quarters of all these flights are between EU destinations.

The products sold on board to these EU destinations are all Tax-paid, the description sometimes used, “Tax Free”, really means discounted, or sales tax/VAT deducted. But, you will not find Duty Free cigarettes, tobaccos or spirits on board (to take home with you), when flying within the EU. You can buy a drink, but only small bottles or cans are available.

Ryanair do not yet have an online Duty Free inflight pre-order system, but for flights to places like The Canaries or Morocco (non-EU Countries) a limited range is sold. The easyjet airline shopping guide is much more comprehensive and covers all food, drink and “duty frees”.

Most of the non-EU destinations that these airlines serve will have an airport shopping mall, both on arrival and departure, where the product range will be much more extensive than on the aircraft. Easyjet vs BA the return journey review and 20% off duty free

I recently reviewed easyJet in comparison to flying with BA in this article . So now that I have done the return journey, do I stick by my original conclusions?

Check in and Boarding

We were flying back from Palma, Majorca on the same ‘Upfront’ fare as before. This includes priority check in, Speedy Boarding, 20kg luggage, 2 items of hand luggage and a front row seat. Check in was pretty impressive for Speedy Boarding. There was only a small queue and we waited a couple of minutes at most. The check in staff member was very welcoming and we were soon on our way to the our lounge courtesy of my Priority Pass .

We were due to depart at 14.35 and the departures board started showing boarding at around 1350. I was very dubious about this as I was aware that aircraft hadn’t even landed at this point! However, if you don’t want to be at the back of the Speedy Boarding queue, you have to go to the gate early. When we arrived at the gate it was a lot better organised than the Gatwick gate with a separate lane for Speedy Boarding. Unfortunately, the whole experience was not much fun again, although better than the way out. As I had predicted they were nowhere near ready for boarding, so we stood there for a least 20 minutes after the boarding sign went on. They did check passports whilst we were waiting to speed things up, but with BA I have not often experienced them saying they were boarding before there was even an aircraft at the gate!

Once we finally started boarding, again it was not a simple process. We were at least using the air bridge for the front 14 rows and Speedy Boarding. The rest of the aircraft used steps. Once we had progressed onto the air bridge, we could see that they were not actually letting anyone onto the plane. Yet again, there was more standing around. I reckon we were standing in a queue for a least 30 minutes from when we arrived at the gate to when we finally got on board.

On the previous flight we had seats 1E and F which are bulkhead seats and probably the best seats on EasyJet. On the way back we had 1A and B as this was all that was left. If I flew with EasyJet again, I would not choose seat 1A again. Similar to some of the BA configurations ,there is no bulkhead on this side of the plane and you are very exposed as people board right by you. Seat 1A is also right against the fuselage and door which actually restricts your legroom on your left side, where the door stick out. You also feel quite cramped in this seat due to the fuselage curve as well.

Food and drink

I can’t comment much on this, as there wasn’t any fresh food available. However, credit to EasyJet where due, I had a notification of this from the app as I was going through security, about 1 hour 30 minutes before the flight. I thought this was an excellent idea and a good example of why it is worth downloading the app for the airline you are flying with! I have not heard of BA doing similar but I may be wrong. We therefore ate in the Priority Pass Sala VIP lounge near the B gates (which wasn’t great).

On arrival at Gatwick I was pleased to see the jet bridge being attached. However, as we disembarked we were then directed down the stairs back onto the apron and into a bus!

Having done both sectors with EasyJet now, I have to say my final conclusion is that it depends on the price. If BA and EasyJet were exactly the same price, I would have to stick with BA because:

• I have status so I get free seat reservations, lounge access, priority boarding and extra luggage
• I can collect tier points and Avios
• If the BA flight was Heathrow, I much prefer flying from there
• The boarding process was bad both times on EasyJet – one of things I hate most about airports is all the time wasted standing around in queues. easyJet made this far worse than it needs to be.

If the price on easyJet was much cheaper than BA and I couldn’t get a Flybe flight on a jet aircraft, then I would look at EasyJet again. The other UK low-cost airline I have previously used and liked was Monarch and I have heard good things about them recently too.

20% off EasyJet Duty Free

If you are planning on flying easyJet on or before 19th July, it would be worth having a look at their duty-free brochure here . They are offering an extra 20% off all their products which make them incredibly cheap. For example, Kiehls Midnight recovery is £38 to buy in Debenhams, with EasyJet after 20% off, the price would be £24.40. Mark Jacobs Decadence 50ml perfume is £68 online compared to £48.80 with EasyJet. They only carry 1 or 2 of each item so you may want to stock up both ways!

How many pieces of luggage can I bring in the cabin with me? 

O ne, free of charge.

The maximum size your cabin luggage is 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, including the handles and wheels. If the flight is very busy, passengers may be asked to put their bag in the hold at the gate. This is free of charge - but means you have to wait at the baggage carousel at the other end. Passengers who pay extra for "Up Front" seats, extra leg room seats or are easyJet Plus cardholders are allowed to take on a small additional bag, up to 45cm x 36cm x 20cm, that can be stored under the seat in front of you.  

No limit but you should be able to lift it into the overhead locker. 

Can I book a hold bag on a single leg, and travel hand-luggage only on the other? 

Am i allowed any items in addition to my one cabin bag .

EasyJet allows passengers to bring on board an overcoat, shawl, umbrella, crutches or walking frame/stick, and one standard size bag of duty free goods from the departure airport.

Anything else?

[UPDATED] EasyJet confirms no change to carrying duty free shopping onboard

However, the low-cost carrier has confirmed to TRBusiness that there will be ‘no changes’ to its policy of allowing passengers to carry onboard one bag of airport shopping for free irrespective of the luggage allowance.

A spokesperson said: “Duty free shopping continues to be allowed on board, in addition to a customer’s cabin bag allowance, that can be stowed in the overhead lockers once all other bags have been placed there if there is room.”

POLICY CHANGE ‘WILL IMPROVE PUNCTUALITY’

In new rules announced yesterday (2 December), easyJet said all customers will be able to store a small under-seat cabin bag (max 45 x 36 x 20cm) only for free, unless they pay for an ‘Up front’ or ‘Extra legroom’ seat.

Customers paying higher fares will be able to bring an additional large cabin bag (max 56 x 45 x 25cm) onboard to store in the overhead locker.

The cost of the extra legroom seats start from £7.99, says easyJet.

At present, all passengers can benefit from flying with a cabin bag measuring up to 56 x 45 x 25cm.

EasyJet says the new policy will improve boarding and punctuality by reducing queue times and other associated delays due to storing excess cabin bags in the hold.

The airline says the size of its under-seat cabin bag and large overhead cabin bag remain among the most generous for air travel, with no weight limit for any cabin baggage.

Customers travelling from 10 February that have not booked an Up Front or Extra legroom seat will still be able to bring onboard a small under- seat cabin and check their large overhead cabin bag into the hold at bag drop.

Robert Carey, Chief Commercial & Customer Officer for easyJet said: “Punctuality is important to our customers and we know that if they have their bags placed into the hold at the gate due to the limited space onboard this can cause flight delays, and it can be frustrating for them too.

“Our new policy will improve boarding and punctuality for everyone, as well as give our customers certainty of what they will have with them onboard.

“For families, we’ll continue to provide a number of options to allow them to bring additional items free of charge, helping keep travel easy and affordable for families when they fly with us.”

How Strict Is EasyJet With Carry-On & Personal Item Size? (2023)

EasyJet (branded “easyJet”) is a low-cost airline headquartered at London Luton Airport. The British-based carrier operates domestic and international flights in its 927 routes to and from more than 34 countries by means of its affiliate airlines: EasyJet UK, EasyJet Switzerland, and EasyJet Europe.

If you’re considering giving EasyJet a try, you might wonder about how strict the carrier is about carry-on and personal item size.  

Let me fill you in on some of EasyJet’s current rules and policies and then answer common questions I hear about them.

How Strict is EasyJet With Its Carry-on Baggage Policy?

EasyJet is considered to be relatively strict in terms of carry-on items brought on board its flights and charges fees for additional items. They state your free “cabin bag” (personal item, actually) must fit in its sizer, or else you’ll likely have to pay fees at the gate for a checked bag. EasyJet recommends carefully measuring your carry-on and personal items before traveling.

EasyJet, like other airlines, establishes and implements its own policies. 

Your EasyJet cabin bag is meant to be stowed underneath the seat in front of each passenger.

EasyJet’s Cabin Bag Policy

Including handles and wheels, your cabin bag measurements on EasyJet flights should not exceed: 

17” l x 14” w x 7” h (45 x 36 x 20 cm), or 38 total linear inches/101 linear cm (l + w + h), and can weigh up to 33 lbs (15 kg). Your cabin bag must also be light enough so you can lift it yourself (individuals with special needs or disabilities can receive assistance upon request).

*According to EasyJet’s website:

“If you’d also like to bring a large cabin bag on board ( max. 22” l x 17” w x 9” h, including handles, straps, and wheels . . . 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm), you have the option to:

• Select an Up Front or Extra Legroom seat OR
• Book a large cabin bag for your flight (starting at $8.99)

If you’re an easyJet Plus cardholder or customer who has booked a FLEXI fare, you can also bring a large cabin bag on board (in addition to your small cabin bag) as part of your membership or fare benefits. 

Please note that the maximum number of cabin bags available per person is two ; one small cabin bag for all customers and one large cabin bag for customers where it’s included with their seat, fare, or membership benefits or where they have paid to add one to their booking.”

Note that paying for your bags online ahead of time is less expensive and can help you avoid paying checked bag fees at the airport or at your gate.  

Take some proactive steps beforehand and invest in some EasyJet-compliant carry-on luggage so that you can travel and relax.

How Can I Measure My Carry-on Bag to Make Sure It Fits on an EasyJet Flight?

To help you verify your baggage conforms with EasyJet’s cabin bag size restrictions, the carrier recommends taking note of bag sizers at airport locations that feature its required 17″ x 14″ x 7″ dimensions.

It’s also a good idea to measure your carry-on bag before you leave for the airport, to ensure that your entire bag, along with the wheels and handles, falls within EasyJet’s carry-on size requirements.

It’s important to remember that the three dimensional measurements together – length + height + width – cannot add up to more than 38 linear inches/101 linear cm. If you happen to be traveling with a soft-sided or expandable suitcase, you may want to measure your bag after it’s packed, to ensure it still complies. 

My EasyJet-compliant Luggage Recommendations

EasyJet’s Carry-on Baggage Allowance

What is EasyJet’s carry-on baggage allowance? All EasyJet passengers are allowed a free carry-on item (cabin bag) that needs to fit under the seat in front of them. Additional carry-on bags are available for an upcharge.

Items that don’t fit into a sizing device or which are considered to be oversized will need to be checked, with gate-checked baggage fees assessed accordingly . Gate-checked bag fees are $58 per.

Bringing Carry-on Liquid Items Onto EasyJet Flights

You are allowed to bring liquid items onboard EasyJet flights in your carry-on baggage, as long as they pass through security checkpoints. Items in violation of regulations will be confiscated.

Toiletries and items in the form of liquids, gels, and aerosols in containers of 3.4 fl. Oz. (100 ml/100g) or less must be packed neatly in a clear, resealable one-quart (1 liter) plastic bag, no more than 7.8 in x 7.8 in (20 cm x 20 cm) in size. Try these Ziploc one-quart baggies . One plastic bag is allowed per passenger, and a total of 1000 ml total is allowed through security.

Duty-free liquids, aerosols, and gels of more than 3.4 oz. /  100 ml are allowed to be brought on board EasyJet flights, as long as they are contained in a duty-free issued Secure Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB).

How Strict Is EasyJet With Your Carry-on Size?

You shouldn’t have any problems at all as long as your item(s) fit in the overhead bin above you or underneath the seat in front of you.

To make your flight as worry-free as possible, I suggest complying with EasyJet’s policies. If you need a new carry-on bag that will fit EasyJet’s (and other carriers’) guidelines, get this bag, and don’t have to worry about it ever again.

How Strict Is EasyJet With Your Carry-on Item’s Weight?

Most airlines are not concerned with carry-on/personal item weight, though EasyJet states that cabin bags should weigh 33 lbs (15 kg) or less. EasyJet is not concerned with paid carry-on bag weight. The airline is more concerned with spaces in the cabin where carry-on items should be able to be stowed comfortably. Meeting the size dimensions of your cabin bag and carry-ons I mentioned above should cover all your bases.

Should I Risk Flying on EasyJet With an Oversized Carry-on Item?

Should you risk flying on EasyJet with an oversized carry-on bag? I say, “Why take the chance?” Most frequent flyers would probably agree with me. Do you like paying extra fees? Note that if your bag is only slightly larger than EasyJet’s specified size dimensions, you’ll likely be OK. Worst-case scenario, if your carry-on is too large, is that you will have to check your bag at the gate and be charged $70 for checking an oversized bag at the gate. PRO TIP – You have a better chance of getting away with a slightly larger piece of luggage if your carry-on is soft-sided. That‘s why I have highlighted and pointed you toward soft-sided bags like this one here . They are a little easier to squeeze into tight spots, including into the overhead bins on a plane!

EasyJet Checked Baggage Fees

EasyJet allows each passenger to purchase up to three checked bags per flight, but if you play your cards right, you might be able to get away with fitting everything you need into your cabin bag (personal item).   

I travel with a bag that is slightly larger than many airline regulations and I have never been asked to check it. I can’t guarantee that you won’t be asked to.

Your best bet is to travel with baggage that is within EasyJet’s size regulations, and then you will never have to worry about it!

How strict is EasyJet regarding its “one personal item” policy? EasyJet is considered to be relatively strict in regard to baggage sizes and weights for its passengers. One small personal item (cabin bag) is allowed per passenger (e.g., purse, handbag, briefcase, laptop bag, backpack, and medically necessary items). Technically speaking, EasyJet expects personal items to be 17” l x 14” w x 7” h (45 cm x 36 cm x 20 cm) or less in size, but as long as your personal item can easily be carried and stored underneath the sizer or underneath the seat in front of you, EasyJet representatives probably won’t ask you about it.

EasyJet’s Cabin Bag (Personal Item) Policy

What about EasyJet’s official cabin bag (personal item) policy? Your personal item ( e.g., purse, shoulder bag, backpack, diaper bag, etc.) must fit under the seat in front of you, and dimensions should not exceed 17” l x 14” w x 7” h (45 cm x 36 cm x 20 cm) .

Carrying Additional Items Onto EasyJet Flights

In addition to your cabin bag and carry-on bags for onboard EasyJet flights, you are also allowed to bring small items, such as a jacket/sweatshirt, blanket, umbrella, book, strollers*, car seats, diaper bags, duty-free items, a reasonably sized stuffed animal , food/drink purchased past the security checkpoint, crutches, strollers, camera, etc. These won’t count as personal items unless they’re larger things that take up space overhead or underneath a seat, like purses, shoulder bags, backpacks, briefcases, large camera cases, etc.

Is the First Checked Bag Free on EasyJet Flights?

Your first checked bag is NOT free on EasyJet flights, unfortunately. Each passenger may purchase up to 3 checked bags, starting at $10 per (for checked bags weighing 50 lbs/23 kg) and up to $70 per for checking your bags at the airport.

So, How Strict is EasyJet About Carry-on and Personal Items?

EasyJet passengers are allowed to take one cabin bag on board for free. Additional carry-on items may be purchased (or included with elite membership benefits). Your free cabin bag needs to fit underneath the seat in front of you. Invest in carry-on baggage that complies with EasyJet’s 22” x 17” x 9” size requirements, like this one . In case you choose to take a risk by bringing a larger bag onto an EasyJet flight, be sure to at least use a soft-sided bag so you’ll be able to navigate it into a tight space better.

If your carry-on or personal item is deemed “oversized,” you’ll likely be charged a gate bag check-in fee of $58 per. Bags deemed both oversized and overweight run the risk of being charged for both infractions, not just one ($70 per for oversized checked bag fee).

from what i have read, easyjet only allow you one bag, so your camera would have to go into that. what camera have you got? a normal dslr as no trouble fitting in a cabin bag, even with extra lenses. i do it several times per year.

Sigh, I wish people would just adhere to the luggage restrictions instead of trying to sneak on board extra stuff. EasyJet gives you unlimited weight allowance + the maximum IATA recommended trolley size. If you can't manage to fit your stuff in that then pay to check a bag.

i have just googled "easyjet baggage allowance" and the info comes up. you are in fact allowed and extra small bag . but if the camera is too big for your case, it would certainly not fit in a smaller bag!

Easyjet allow ONE cabin bag unless you are an Easyjet Plus, FLEXI fare, Upfront or extra legroom customer (these are allowed an extra small bag), as for the carrier bags they allow on board, they have to be the sealed tamper evident bags from duty free, you wouldn't be able to add anything to it.

Just stick to the rules, or pay to check a bag. Why do people always want to take more thn they're entitled to?

Hi, thanks for your evidently heartfelt replies and warm welcome to the forum. I was simply asking if you could bring a carrier bag, as I would also like to bring my camera case with me as it is quite fragile. This would take up almost a third of the capacity of my case, which just wouldn't hold what I would need it to should that be the case. I have researched this (yes, on Google!), but this is an airport scheme which is hardly written about, so I thought I'd call on other travellers who might know about this.

Maybe stop wasting your time bashing other people (even novices like myself) and spend your time elsewhere if you're blatantly of no help.

i have never heard of a camera case being fragile! it is there to protect the camera, so it must be tough. putting it in a carrier bag would be far more hazardous than putting it in your case! in fact clothes etc in your case would provide even further security. as said, i carry two cameras , and sometimes three, in my case, and there is still room for clothes. of course, if you do not have room in you case for cothes, you will either have to wear the clothes so as to provide space, or else check in a bag.

i doubt that anyone is attacking you, but just drawing your attention to the written rules which are there for everyone.

EasyJet Luggage Allowance: All You Need To Know

Traveling with a budget airline is a great way to save money, especially when you’re only going on short flights. But all budget airlines have very strict policies for luggage sizes and you need to know the policy inside out to avoid any extra fees because that’s how these airlines make money.

I’ll walk you through all the details of EasyJet’s luggage policy in this guide, to help you pack for your trip and not spend a penny more than you already paid for the plane tickets. So, keep reading to find out everything you need to know about EasyJet’s luggage allowance policy!

EasyJet Luggage Allowance for Cabin Bags

All EasyJet passengers are allowed one small cabin bag inside the cabin. The cabin bag can be any shape, as long as it doesn’t exceed the following dimensions: 45 x 36 x 20 cm. Those dimensions include any handles and wheels, and the maximum weight of this bag is 15 kilograms.

This can be a small backpack or a classic underseat bag, and it’s included for free with every ticket. Travelers who have the EasyJet Flexi membership or who purchase one large cabin bag with their ticket will also be allowed to bring another carry-on. The maximum dimensions for this bag are 56 x 45 x 25 cm, which is the size of a standard 22” carry-on suitcase.

It’s important to note that, if you show up at the gate with a carry-on suitcase without purchasing it with your ticket, you won’t be allowed to bring the cabin bag on board.
