Rice is a staple food in Arunachal Pradesh food, and any other food is just a side dish. The most important and different thing about their rice is that in Arunachal, they prefer to cook their rice in the hollow bamboo over some hot coal to give it a different flavour than other types of rice. Who doesn't want to taste that right?

Bamboo shoot is widely eaten through all the North Eastern States because of its delicate flavour and is a chief component of food in Arunachal Pradesh. The delicious bamboo shoots are used in the dishes of boiled vegetables, cooked meat, pickles and chutneys.

3. Pika Pila

Pika pila is a famous type of a pickle that is mostly made by the Apatani tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. It is a favourite accompaniment of food in Arunachal Pradesh. Pika Pila is a type of a pickle that is made by using bamboo shoot and pork fat with a little addition of King Chilly. It is hot but not very spicy as to make you feel sick.

Another delicacy of the Arunachal Pradesh Food is the Lukter. Nothing complicated, Lukter is a combination of cooked dry meat and chilly flakes from the King chilly or Bhut Jolokia. Like the norm goes with Arunachal, this too is just a side dish meant to be eaten with the rice.

Pehak is also a side dish delicacy of Arunachal Pradesh Food. Pehak is a type of spicy chutney that is made by the use of fermented soya bean and chilli. The chilly obviously being the King chilly is the main ingredient in this dish as that's what makes it hot and spicy. The taste of flavored rice along with this spicy tangy mash makes for an awesome dish!

Well all of you must be wondering what is apong? It is just another name for rice beer and is one of the most important traditional drink of Arunachal, and forms an important part of cuisine in Arunachal Pradesh. This beer is home-made, free of any chemicals and is also light on the buds if you're a light drinker and want a little light beer instead of the usual strong commercialized one.

Just like the Apong, Marua is also home-made alcohol that is very famous in Arunachal Pradesh cuisine. The only difference is that this alcoholic beverage is made of millet instead of rice. A common drink that Arunachalis enjoy drinking on occasions.

8. Chura Sabji

Worth a shot isn't it?

Now I personally have not developed a taste for this dish yet but all the people I know absolutely love it. It is a kind of a curry made of fermented cheese made by either yak milk or cow's milk and not to forget most important the flakes and a few pieces of the King chilly which makes it spicy but delicious.

The defining food of the northeast, stuffed dumplings known as momos are ubiquitous across Delhi and the northeast and are usually filled with various vegetables like cabbage, potato, carrot in their vegetarian variants and chicken, mutton, and beef are used in their non-vegetarian counterparts. If you haven't tried it yet please do so soon, they are among the most famous food of Arunachal Pradesh!

I've saved the best for the last. Meat is the main delicacy of Arunachal Pradesh. Until now, I have not met a single Arunachali who doesn't love meat be it Chicken, Mutton or pork. The people of Arunachal however, prefer not to have their meat fried, and it's either boiled or smoked and the most common meat is that of an animal called 'Mithun' (Bos frontalis), a member of the cattle family found only in the North East.

Consider Arunachal Pradesh to be an introvert state. It doesn’t talk much but has so much to offer, be it nature’s abundance or rich cultural heritage. In fact, it has made its way to many travellers’ list of the most alluring places to visit in north east India . There is another element that makes the state even more interesting, its food culture! Today we will be focusing on the same!

See, the food practices obviously differ from tribe to tribe in the state. As you travel towards the parts closer to Tibet, you will see more use of dairy products. When you explore the western parts, on the other hand, you will see a lot of dependency on vegetables and plant-based ingredients. That being said, the basics seem to remain the same. Very little use of spices, no deep-frying and rice and meat being the staple food!

Another meat delicacy. For making lukter, thinly sliced meat is roasted over charcoal. Along with the meat, chillies are also roasted and then ground. Once the meat is cooked, it is slathered with the chilli paste. The unique taste of this dish comes from the special kind of chilli used in this dish which is bhut jolokia or king chilli. This also tastes great along with rice. Just a little reminder. King chilli is quite hot. So, dishes made with it are quite spicy.

Here’s all you need to know before trying this dish. A fermented cheese made with yak or cow milk is the key ingredient in this curry dish. Another important ingredient is the king chilli or Bhut Jolokia. Some vegetables are also added to this curry. It may be a required taste but you should give it a go. You can have this dish as curry with some rice or as soup.

Momo

This is surely not a new name for you. Because you can get momos almost everywhere nowadays. But take our words and do try momos in Arunachal Pradesh. You will get both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options here. And the hot dumplings are served with chutneys, like everywhere else.

These beverages are produced manually and locally using traditional practices as transferred to them by their ancestors. There are 25 major and about 125 sub-tribes inhabiting in the state. More than 250 different types of familiar and less-familiar ethnic fermented foods and alcoholic beverages are prepared and consumed by the different ethnic people of North East India, which include milk, vegetable, bamboo, soybean, meat, fish, cereal and alcoholic beverages. Some languages like the Digaru , Idu , and Miju , of the Mishmi dialect, amount under the endangered languages, and researchers predict that they might become extinct in the coming years. Bodic language is the common language in the western and northern districts of the state. 

Most people are comfortable with the Assamese language. The reason for this is the prolonged influence of the Ahom dynasty rule in Arunachal Pradesh. Hindi and English too form a part of the daily use language. Most people in the state can understand Hindi and English and converse in the language.  

Architecture-of-Arunachal-Pradesh

The holy Tawang Monastery, also known as the Tawang Ganden Mangyal Lhatse, which roughly translates to ‘the heavenly paradise of the divine place chosen by the horse,’ is the world’s second biggest monastery. The monastery is said to be about 400 years old and is in charge of 17 gompas in the area. This monastery, which houses over 300 monks and is built amidst the Himalayan ranges with fascinating views of the Tawang-Chu valley, is built amidst the Himalayan ranges with hypnotic views of the Tawang-Chu valley.

The beautiful construction may be accessed from the north via the ‘Kakaling’ gate, which is a stone-walled hut-like structure. Tawang Monastery is an exemplar of traditional Buddhist architecture, having various structures on its grounds, the most notable of which is a three-story assembly hall known as the ‘Dukhang.’ The inner sanctuary is dominated by an opulent 8-meter high figure of Lord Buddha, amid the gorgeous interiors featuring paintings, murals, carvings, sculptures, and rich textiles.

A typical village has fewer and more compact houses. The dwellings are constructed in accordance with the humid subtropical environment. The dwellings have a rectangular shape, a long slanted roof, and an open platform linked to the main building. A slanting roof usually dominates the primary residential unit. The home has short walls and, most significantly, no windows. As a result, the rooms lack natural light and have a smokey feel. For them, the home is not just a structure that protects them from hard rains, loud storms, and humidification, but it is also a living thing.

Shawls, wraps, and skirts are common in Arunachal Pradesh’s traditional attire . Though the tribes are all of the same ethnicity, the way they dress varies depending on where they live. Arunachal Pradesh residents are known to be born weavers. The majority of their dress styles are derived from their forefathers. In Arunachal Pradesh, the handloom industry is a growing sector. The tribal people choose to wear only natural organic jewellery. Goat hair, human hair, tree bark, and other materials are used as raw materials. Dark blue, green, yellow, black, and other dark colours are desired. Natural dyes produced from plants, barks, flowers, and seeds are the source of these colours.

In most tribes in Arunachal Pradesh, girls and women are required to wear accessories. Earring, silver rings, bamboo pieces, red beads, and gorgeous turquoises are worn by Monpa ladies. Another well-known clothing item is the hat, which is embellished with a magnificent peacock feather. The attire is stunning and draws attention to itself. The Hill Miris are a group of people that dwell in the Kamla valley and dress in brilliant garments. Women also wear ‘crinoline of cane rings,’ which are quite attractive.

The Sherdukpen live in Bomdila’s southern section, close to the Buddhist community. The men in this village dress in sleeveless silk garments with two pinned edges at the shoulder area. Clothing is often knee-length. Skullcaps coated with yak hair are its distinguishing feature. Sherdukpen ladies wear sleeveless, collarless clothing. They cover it with a full-sleeved jacket and mushaiks (waist cloth).

The indigenous religion of Arunachal Pradesh is highly inclined towards nature and makes the culture of Arunachal Pradesh even more rich. The people of the state are close to nature; they are practically dependent on Mother Nature. They worship nature in various forms, like folklores, dance, etc. 

Buddhism is the dominant religion in the state. The tribes of the districts of West Kameng and Tawang profess Tibetan Buddhism. At the same time, the people in the region near the Burmese border follow Theravada Buddhism. Christianity is also a major religion in the state, following the indigenous religion. About 30% of the population of Arunachal Pradesh practice the Christianity religion. While a tiny proportion of the people also practice Hinduism.

The people of Arunachal Pradesh prefer mild flavors with fewer spices and a sober taste. If you ever get a chance to visit Arunachal Pradesh, you must try boiled rice cakes, thukpa, and Apang. Thukpa and momos are the traditional dishes of Arunachal Pradesh.

The culture of Arunachal Pradesh, observes many festivals throughout the year. The celebrations are broadly classified into religious festivals, socio-cultural festivals, and agricultural festivals. 

The Siang River Festival honours this beautiful state’s community peace. It was once a component of the Brahmaputra darshan event. The Siang River Festival is now celebrated in Turing, Yingkiong, and Pasighat. This event aims to promote ecotourism while also providing a variety of entertaining activities. Elephant races, river rafting, culinary festivals, and other activities are among the games available. This is one of Arunachal Pradesh’s most well-known festivities .

The Pangsau Pass Winter Celebration, which began in 2007, is a modern winter festival organised by the residents. This three-day event is held in Nampong, Changlang district, by the people. Every year in the month of January, this festival takes place. They perform traditional dances and songs as part of the ethnicity celebration. A stand with a variety of artworks from throughout the firm is set up here. Even Myanmar has a chance to show off its culture on this platform. The event brings together tribes from the Northeast and Myanmar to showcase their cultures and customs. This is a celebration that should not be missed while visiting Arunachal Pradesh.

Culture of Arunachal Pradesh Festivals

Losar Celebration, Arunachal Pradesh’s most important festival, commemorates the Tibetan New Year. In Tibet’s pre-Buddhist time, the celebration was originally called as the Agrarian Festival, and it was held to commemorate the blossoming of apricot trees. Today, the Monpa tribe of Arunachal Pradesh celebrates the Losar Festival in the month of February or early March to fend off evil and welcome happiness and wealth into the new year. This well-known Arunachal Pradesh festival provides visitors with the ideal opportunity to sample locally produced beverages and traditional cuisine. Remember to tell each other “tashi delek,” which means “good luck,” when you run across each other at the Losar Festival.

Nyokum of the Nyishi tribe, another well-known celebration in Arunachal Pradesh, is held every year on February 28th. Nyokum is known for bringing wealth and peace to the people. Nyokum is a local dialect term that may be split down into two parts: Nyok, which means land, and Kum, which means people. Nyokum is a two-day festival in which the Nyishi tribe meets to sing and dance. The festival’s primary rites are done by the high priest, who also offers prayers to the spirits in order to help everyone and every household achieve peace and prosperity.

Music-and-Dance-of-Arunachal-Pradesh

The extant dance traditions in Arunachal Pradesh are an important part of the socio-cultural history of this small Indian state in the northeast. The natives like dancing and having a good time. They dance for pleasure as well as for festivals and ceremonies. The many dance genres are enjoyed by both men and women.

The dancing forms differ in accordance with the tribe’s diversity. Igo dance is practised by Mishmi priests, battle dance is practised by Adis, Wanchos, and Noctes, and ceremonial dance is practised by Buddhists. All of these dancing genres are mostly male-dominated and female participation is prohibited.

Aji Lamu, Roppi, Hurkani, Popir, Rekham Pada, Chalo, Ponung, Buiya, Lion dance, Pasi Kongki, and Peacock dance are some of the most prominent folk dances in Arunachal Pradesh. The majority of dances are choreographed to the beat of chorus tunes. While the songs are being sung, cymbals and drums are played in the background.

Folk Music of Arunachal Pradesh

Locals sing songs that seem like stories. The tribes’ historical past is brought to life via their folk melodies. These songs are mythical in nature and have roots in folklore. Some of the prominent folk songs played at various festivals in Arunachal Pradesh are listed below:

Ja-Jin-Ja is a traditional song that is performed at weddings, other social gatherings, and other festive occasions. It is performed by both men and women, either separately or in chorus. When the experts begin singing the songs, everyone in the audience joins in.

Baryi is a song that tells the tale of Arunachal Pradesh’s mythology, history, and religious tradition. Whether it’s a social gathering or a religious service, Baryi is a must-have. The song Baryi is rather lengthy. As a result, the song’s whole cycle takes hours to complete. The song’s reminiscences of the past elicit a sentimental response from the audience.

When the bridal side returns to the wedding ceremony, leaving the bride in her new house, Nyioga is sung. The bride might utilise the counsel in the song to help her manage her future life. The fundamental concept of this song is joy.

Art-and-Craft-of-Arunachal-Pradesh

The art and craft of Arunachal Pradesh represent the state’s diverse culture and customs. Various inhabited tribes produce a variety of bamboo and cane handicrafts, as well as wood carving and carpet weaving. People in the areas of Tirap, Upper & West Siang, Lohit, and Tawang carve exquisite wood sculptures. East Kameng, Papumpare, Changlang, Upper and Lower Subansiri, East and West Siang, Lohit, and Dibang Valley, on the other hand, produce high-quality cane.

Handloom is an important element of the state’s rich art and craft tradition, and it is the principal source of income for the majority of women in the state. In Arunachal, women from 20 tribes and 100 sub-tribes strive to make skirts (Gale), shirts (Galuk), cotton shawls, side bags, and curtain fabric in a variety of patterns, quality, traditional value, motivation, and design. Another prominent art form that Arunachal Pradesh is proud of is painting. In Buddhist-dominated parts of the state, including as Tawang, West Kameng, and Upper Siang Districts, a specific form of painting known as Tangkha is common.

The subject matter of these paintings is mostly religious or traditional in nature. Carpet weaving, like painting, is mostly practised in Arunachal’s rural areas. The state’s carpets have been praised as being of national and international renown, putting another feather in Arunachal’s crown. Apart from carpets, the state also produces wall hangings, cushion pads, telephone pads, and floor coverings.

The Wangcho Bag, which is produced by the women of the Wangcho tribe of Tirap District, is one of Arunachal’s most distinctive products. The colourful geometrical pattern on the bag is woven using cotton and acrylic yarn. Apart from the distinctive bags, weavers are also developing a variety of utilitarian items such as women and gents waistcoats and costumes. The Wangcho women also manufacture grass necklaces out of seasonal reed found around river banks. In addition, the Tirap area produces necklace wristbands, waistbands, headgear, and earrings.

Weddings  of Arunachal Pradesh

The wedding celebrations in Arunachal Pradesh are unique. You won’t find this in any other part of India. There are predominantly two types of marriages, first, Aaw Lang Aaw, and second, Thok no Chaii. The priest chants holy chants in front of the sacred fire. In the second type of marriage, Thok No Chaii, the groom has to perform a sacrifice of the natural fauna.  

The groom’s family treks up to the hilltop and shout ‘Ho’ to declare their arrival. They stay at the bride’s house for four nights. The first-day treat of the celebration is on the bride’s family. The grand luncheon follows the first event. The groom’s family organizes a great pleasure on the second day. The third day observes the most exciting paint splashing ceremony. The groom’s family leaves on the fourth day. The bride goes to the groom’s house after a year of the ceremony.  

Beliefs in  Arunachal Pradesh

The people of Arunachal Pradesh follow the Doyni-Poloism philosophy. It is the philosophy of living life, balancing nature, and harmony among the tribes. The tribes that follow this philosophical belief worship nature and believe that the sun and moon are the prime deities. The common belief is that life began from nothingness and the evolution from void advocates Sedi Melo’s creation. In marriages and alliances, people follow endogamy between tribes, while societies practice exogamy between clans.  

Many tribes in the state also worship animals. More than 80 ancient tribes in the state believe that misfortune guides diseases, and everything revolves around the doings of the evil spirits which govern human life and action. The only way to break through the misfortune of evil spirits is Dandai’s service.  

Occupations-of-Arunachal-Pradesh

Agriculture is the primary source of income for the inhabitants of Arunachal Pradesh. Jhum agriculture is the main source of income for the farmers. Jhuming entails clearing a section of the forest by felling and burning trees, then using a poker to scatter seeds in those places. For years, many farmers have relied on this type of agriculture to make a living.

The vast majority of the state’s area is covered in deep woodland and lands. These forests produce goods, and enterprises based on their processing offer jobs and money to a vast number of people. The majority of the state’s industries rely on natural forest products like lumber and plywood.

Tea, petrochemicals, and cement are among the other businesses. In some sections of Arunachal, fruit growing is also practised. Fruit farming and horticulture has become a big industry. Many farmers have also benefited from this industry.

Arunachal Pradesh is a land of rich cultural heritage and tradition that stems from the presence of the various tribes indigenous to the state. One of the larger tribes is the ‘Apatani’ who are known for their fish and paddy culture, along with cane and bamboo crafts. With being the first tribe in India to come in contact with the British in the 12th century, various documents record the growth and tradition of the Apatanis over a number of years. The elders in the tribe propagate knowledge through folk stories, songs, couplets in the form of Miji-Migun, Busi-Ayu and also extensive and elaborate festivals like Marun, Myako, Dree, and Yapung. The Apatanis speak a local language called Tani and worship the sun and the moon. The tribe has extensive knowledge of herbal remedies to cure most of their ailments. Local ritual specialists also take part in chanting, blood-letting and animal sacrifices in a bid to keep the inhabitants healthy.

View: China renaming 30 places in Arunachal shows Xi Jinping's ‘great unifier’ ambitions

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 12 kilometres long tunnel under 13,700 feet high Se La on March 9 from Itanagar, the Xi Jinping regime has gone berserk.

First, they publicly protested against PM Modi’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh stating that the state belonged to them and then on March 30 decided to give Mandarin names to 30 places in Arunachal. ALSO READ: View: Se La tunnel will allow faster Indian response in case of Chinese aggression External affairs minister S Jaishankar called the first move ‘ludicrous’ and the MEA spokesperson called the second move senseless. This is the fourth list of names of places in Arunachal Pradesh released by the Xi Jinping regime since 2017, a move that was then triggered by the visit of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to Tawang.

While Jaishankar has dismissed the exercise by saying that you cannot own my house just by giving it a new name, the Chinese aggressive moves against India, Taiwan and in South China are designed to project Jinping as the ‘great unifier’ before his domestic audience.

Just as Mao Zedong gave the Chinese respect, Deng Xiaoping economic empowerment, Xi wants to go down in history as the man who unified China with dreams of militarily conquering Taiwan, lording over the South China Sea and occupying Tawang, the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama. This may be the sound mind game in theory but is delusional in reality.

Why did China rename 30 places in Arunachal?

The real reason behind the latest round of renaming of places in Arunachal Pradesh by China is really to finger the Narendra Modi government and instigate the Opposition on the eve of the 2024 elections.

It is also a reaction to the Modi government taking decisive steps in integrating the border state with the mainland through better air and land connectivity and military upgradation of infrastructure from Tawang to Kibuthoo. The new international airport at Itanagar will lead to economic development of the state through tourist arrivals from all over the country.

Before Narendra Modi was sworn as the prime minister in May 2014, the upgradation of roads and military infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh existed on paper and plans.

The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance's (UPA) defence minister A K Antony is on record in Parliament stating that his government was not keen on developing border infrastructure all along the 3488 km Line of Actual Control as they feared the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) would use the roads to come into Indian hinterland. Even the Indian Army suffered from the 1962 hangover and efforts were made to pacify the Chinese dragon lest it breathed fire.

The renaming of places in Arunachal Pradesh by China is part of the Middle Kingdom mindset of the Xi Jinping regime. It believes that China is at the center of the world and all others are tributary states. This has given rise to the Chinese military and cultural expansion in the present decade with routine violations of Taiwan air corridors, coercion of Philippines, Indonesia through aggressive PLA Navy and efforts to block Indian patrols along the Ladakh LAC.

Chinese spokespersons should do research before they swear in the name of Arunachal Pradesh as the position of the Chinese Communist Party has changed over the past decades. In 1960, the then Chinese premier Chou En Lai told his Indian counterpart that China would give up claims on the eastern sector if India accepted the 1959 line on the western sector through Kongka La. The same position was reiterated by Deng Xiaoping in 1984. But in 1987 during a vice minister dialogue, it was communicated that China will stake claim on both sectors.

While the PLA continued military nibbling at the LAC in both the sectors, the Modi government decided to give it back to them when the Chinese army transgressed into the Chumar area in September 2014 while President Xi Jinping was hosted by PM Modi in Ahmedabad.

PM Modi told President Xi bluntly that either he tells the PLA to withdraw from Chumar or he will assume that the transgression has the approval of the Chinese president.

That Arunachal Pradesh was totally off the Special Representative dialogue on boundary resolution was made clear by NSA Ajit Doval to his current counterpart Wang Yi. When Wang Yi mentioned the word Tawang during an SR dialogue, NSA Doval told him that the dialogue needs to be stopped immediately and henceforth as Tawang is not on agenda under any circumstance.

The NSA made it clear that just because his grandfather used to go for pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake in Tibet without a passport, should India lay a territorial claim to Tibet. So what will India do after the fresh round of renaming?

The Modi government is currently in the election mode and hence the matter currently stands dismissed as senseless. However, the Chinese aggravation will not go unanswered as India also has the option of revisiting the strong influence of Indian civilization in Tibet with Sanskritised names of places and the foundation of Sanskrit Sutras in Tibetan Buddhism like Om Mani Padme Hum.

It will further integrate Arunachalis into mainstream to the first village in Kibuthoo with advanced military capabilities and capacities along the eastern sector for faster deployment of troops, mountain guns and BrahMos missiles. President Xi Jinping should realize that he is not dealing with India of 1962 and Narendra Modi is not Jawaharlal Nehru, who went to attend a non-aligned summit in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in the midst of the 1962 war.

China is nervous, resorting to unethical conduct: Kiren Rijiju on Beijing naming places in Arunachal Pradesh

On March 30, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs published the country’s latest set of “standardised” names for places in Arunachal Pradesh, which China calls Zangnan, and says is part of the Tibetan autonomous region. The renaming covered 11 residential areas, 12 mountains, four rivers, one lake, one mountain pass and a piece of land, all given in Chinese characters, Tibetan and pinyin, the Roman alphabet version of Mandarin Chinese.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Rijiju said, "China has given some kind of names to some places in Arunachal Pradesh...We are very upset and totally reject these kinds of activities by the Chinese government. Our government and the External Affairs Ministry has responded appropriately."

'Congress did not develop border areas, furthering Chinese propaganda'

Lashing out at the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said the opposition party had followed a policy of not developing the border areas when it was in power, and credited PM Modi for reversing the "negative border policy" of the Congress. He also accused the Congress of furthering Chinese propaganda.

"Earlier these border areas were left underdeveloped during Congress' time... Chinese were very happy with the Congress Govt because Congress had the policy not to develop the border areas. PM Modi has reversed the negative border policy of the Congress party... China is feeling uncomfortable... That is why they are resorting to this unethical conduct...This is not 1962 India... If we are disturbed then we will respond...Nobody can change our status," he said.

On Monday, Rijiju asserted that Arunachal Pradesh is an alienable part of India and the "baseless claims" made by China will not change the ground reality. "I strongly condemn China's illegally 'standardised' geographical names given to 30 places inside Arunachal Pradesh. China has been making all baseless claims but that's not going to change the ground reality and the 'historical facts'," he said.

India rejects China's 'senseless' claims

India on Tuesday reacted sharply and asserted that "assigning invented names will not alter the reality that Arunachal Pradesh". In a statement released by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, New Delhi dubbed China's claims "senseless" and affirmed that the Arunachal Pradesh "is, has been, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India."

"China has persisted with its senseless attempts to rename places in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. We firmly reject such attempts. Assigning invented names will not alter the reality that Arunachal Pradesh is, has been, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India," MEA said in a statement.

The recent statements by China to reassert its claims over the state started with Beijing lodging a diplomatic protest with India over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh, where he dedicated to the nation the Sela Tunnel built at an altitude of 13,000 feet in Arunachal Pradesh.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on March 23 dismissed China's repeated claims on Arunachal Pradesh as "ludicrous" and that the frontier state was a "natural part of India". "This is not a new issue. I mean, China has laid claim, it has expanded its claim. The claims are ludicrous to begin with and remain ludicrous today," he said in response to a question on the Arunachal issue after delivering a lecture at the prestigious Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) of the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Arunachal assembly elections 2024: Congress candidates opted out of electoral race due to BJP's popularity, says CM Khandu

A runachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Wednesday said several Congress candidates left the electoral race because of BJP’s popularity among people.

Khandu emphasised that the people of the state have witnessed the development trajectory initiated by the BJP and asserted that only the saffron party could lead the state towards further growth.

“People of the state have discarded Congress from their hearts because of misrule and mismanagement. BJP never believed in money politics and had never allured any Congress candidate to surrender in the elections. It is because they have realised that only the BJP can bring development in the state,” Khandu said while dismissing Congress leader Nabam Tuki’s allegations.

Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Nabam Tuki had on Tuesday accused the ruling BJP in the state of luring their candidates with money to secure victory in the assembly elections.

Tuki claimed that many party candidates withdrew their nomination papers after being offered substantial sums by the ruling party.

“Many Congress candidates did not file nominations and those who filed later withdrew their papers because of the development-oriented performance of the BJP government which was never witnessed during Congress rule in the state. We never believe in money politics and our main mantra is development,” the chief minister said.

Khandu, who won uncontested from Mukto along with nine other party candidates this time, accused the Congress of playing politics on religious lines.

“The Congress is trying to garner the support of the Christian community in the state through a prominent forum in the state which is bad for a democratic setup. It is the dirtiest politics being played by the opposition,” he said.

Khandu’s accusation came after the Arunachal Christian Forum, a prominent body in the state, had announced its support for non-BJP candidates in the state.

“I believe that the Christian community will never surrender to the dirty politics of the Congress and people of the state will never forgive the opposition party in the days to come,” he said.

The chief minister said that except for the BJP, no other party in the state fielded candidates in all the 60 assembly seats.

“How one can claim to form the next government when they have not put even 30 candidates? It is only BJP who will win with a thumping majority and form the next government in the state as well as at the Centre,” Khandu claimed.

The Congress has fielded 19 candidates for the assembly polls followed by the National People’s Party (NPP) in 20 seats, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in 14, the regional outfit People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) in 11 seats, Arunachal Democratic Party in four, Lok Jana Shakti Party (LJSP) in one seat respectively.
