Essays About Your Mom: Top 5 Examples and 5 Prompts

Some of the most important memories in our lives involve our mothers. If you need to write essays about your mom, our guide will help.

A mother is a female parent of a child. Mothers nurture their children throughout childhood and, for many, throughout adulthood as well. The desire to support and protect our children is never ending for many mothers.

Motherhood, however, is not always a genetic role. Many people foster or adopt children or find themselves acting in a parental role for someone else’s children. What matters is the effort you put into a motherly role; for most, the instincts are all there.

It can safely be said that a mom is one of the most significant role models one can have in life and one whose influence continues to inspire. I once read a statement that said, ‘one day, you will realize your Mom is the best friend you will ever have.’ That is certainly true for me, and I hope for many of you.

If you are writing essays about your mom, our essay examples should prove inspiring.

5 Top Essay Examples

1. story of my mom by wilbur mckenzie, 2. an open letter to my mom, and all moms by samantha wolf , 3. my mom is a movie star by dan moore, 4. leader of my life: my mother by chelsea gonzales.

  • 5. Your Mom Doesn’t Hate You, She’s Just Trying to Help You by Carly Newberg

5 Writing Prompts On Essays About Your Mom

1. the best memory of your mom, 2. a lesson your mom taught you, 3. what is your mom’s best quality, 4. your mom as a role model, 5. who is your mom.

“My mother believes in me, in everything I do, and is always positive about it. Every decision, task, and every level that I concur, my mom is always there, believing in me that I will succeed. Graduating 5th grade and moving up to 6th grade was a big step, just like graduating 8th grade and moving up to 9th grade was. But my mother believed that I would still do well in school and would enjoy it a lot.”

Mckenzie writes about his mother as his greatest influence and inspiration. He reflects on how his mom always makes sure he is well and how she loves the family unconditionally. He also describes her selflessness, as she volunteers for those in need and raises money for charity. Her mother’s love, selflessness, and encouragement inspire Mckenzie to try his best in everything he does, and he is genuinely grateful for her.

“All I can say is thank you for being an amazing mother and all I want for you is to keep doing what makes you happy and brightens your day. Keep creating and going to the beach just to look at the ocean. Keep running, even if it’s not in marathons and don’t forget how awesome of a mother you are. Keep collecting seashells and spreading your positive energy everywhere you go. I love you, Mom.”

Wolf’s essay is addressed to her own mother and is composed of different notes and letters. According to Wolf, her mother is hardworking, optimistic, and devoted, and she recalls several moments they shared. The moments she describes are heartfelt and profound experiences that many can relate to.

“To this day, she wakes up every morning, marches into our living room, and talks with cancer patients on the phone, lending them her empathy and expertise. It’s amazing, and I wanted her to know I saw all that. I wanted her to know I knew she’s always been a badass. I wanted her to know she’s an inspiration to me, a dynamic, courageous, capable, remarkable person I admire and study every day.”

Moore discusses his mother’s life beyond her role in his life. He briefly tells her life story, then writes about her work for a colon cancer foundation. She spends most of her time consoling and caring for cancer patients; only now is Moore able to appreciate what she is doing. He is in awe at all that his mom has been able to accomplish besides being a great mother to him.

“She utilizes her wisdom by teaching me the ways of life. She rejoices as I apply her teachings in my life and she understands me. The abundance of knowledge my mother has supplied me with continuously fills my life with rare and beautiful treasures.”

In her essay, Gonzales reflects on the spiritual lessons her mom has instilled in her. Her mother is a role model of a strong, Christian woman devoted to her family and God. She is always there for her daughter, giving her advice on how to handle difficult situations. Gonzales aspires to be just like her mother in everything she does, especially when raising her own children.

 5. Your Mom Doesn’t Hate You, She’s Just Trying to Help You by Carly Newberg

“I’m not a parent (yet). However, I hope that when I am, I can take what I’ve learned from the obstacles I’ve faced with my mom, to keep the generational progress moving forward. After all, that is one of the beautiful gifts we’re given on Earth; To learn from the mistakes of our loved ones, map out our route accordingly, do our best to get where we are going, and accept the detours along the way knowing those after us will use them to love harder and live wiser.”

In this essay, Newberg discusses a phenomenon we are all too familiar with: mothers arguing with us. She explains that despite their seemingly curtailing actions, mothers always want what is best for us and are even struggling with whether their decisions are correct. Newberg suggests that we should be understanding of our mothers and use these experiences as lessons for how to parent in the future.

Essays About Your Mom: The best memory of your mom

For your essay, reflect on an experience with your mom that you treasure. Perhaps it is a birthday celebration, a trip out of town, or simply a conversation you had. Describe the events that transpired, how they made you feel, and why you treasure them as you do. Also, consider if your perception of this event has changed. Perhaps it has taught you more than you first thought.

One of a mother’s primary roles is to teach her children essential skills and lessons to prepare them for the future. Think about one or more things your mom taught you, whether life skills, values, or otherwise. You can be as general or in-depth as you want regarding what you’ve learned from your mom, but be sure to explain it adequately.

For an interesting essay topic, write about a quality of your mom’s that you seek to emulate- her patience, kindness, or fortitude. Discuss why you have chosen it, how it is essential to who your mom is, and how you hope to use it in the future.

Essays About Your Mom: Your mom as a role model

Mothers are role models to everyone, not only their kids but also to others they interact with daily. In your essay, you can reflect on a time your mom did something truly admirable that cemented her position as your role model. As with the other essays, describe the events, what you learned, and why you chose this. You may also comment on how it has shaped you as a prospective or active parent. Discuss any aspects of parenthood you would like to emulate and those you would not!

This essay topic may seem simple, but one can learn much about a person from a simple biography and reflection. Give readers a general idea of what your mom does, her role in your life, and how she has made you who you are today; paint a picture of this fantastic woman and why she is so important. You can include something about her background and note how it has influenced her, making her the mom she is. Also, you may consider whether any of her inherited traits have been passed to you.

10 shopping experiences with your mother

Your mother is like a drill sergeant when it comes to shopping and you are her helpless deputy..

Nour Sheety

Shopping with your friends is an enjoyable experience. It’s relaxed, it’s useful and it gives you time for much-needed catch up. It’s the very definition of retail therapy.

Shopping with your mother is an entire different deal. Your mother is like a drill sergeant when it comes to shopping and you are her helpless deputy.

1. She knows where all the sales are

essay on shopping with my mother

I legitimately don’t know how she does this. Your mother could be traveling for two weeks, but she still functions like Google Maps for all things on sale. It’s like she can smell the prices dropping, and you can bet you’re going shopping soon.

2. The “dress comfortably” warning

Don’t even try to go shopping with uncomfortable shoes. Mama will not allow it. Add to that buttoned down shirts, hoodies, and anything else that isn’t easy and quick to change out of.

This isn’t some regular old shopping trip. This is a frantic hunt to find the perfect shirt to go with those shorts you bought three weeks ago. You must be prepared and diligent!

3. Fitting room fashion show

when u walk into school w/ ur new clothes after ur mom takes u shopping pic.twitter.com/912F8ONawS — rach ???? (@ratchsan55) October 25, 2016

How would you ever know what looks good on you if your mother isn’t in the fitting room? You take all the clothes you’ve picked out (or, more likely, the ones she picked out for you) and you try them one-by-one. And you can be sure that she’s gotten all the shop attendants to keep those clothes coming to you, their hands poking into your cubicle from the space between the top of the door and the ceiling.

Anyone else know how awkward it feels when you’re done changing and your mom isn’t in the fitting room? So, you just have to wait till she gets there…

4. Sensible shopping

Had a dream that my mom took me shopping and told me I could get whatever I wanted... woke up and my soul was crushed ???? — Ally Denham (@ally_denham) October 27, 2016

Simply, “No, albi, we’ll get it when there’s a sale, you’ll buy it for half its price.”

Really, no one else can talk that sense into you like your mother.

5. Absentee shopping

When mom brings home the shopping pic.twitter.com/G8PcJnHStf — Matty (@MattyField10) October 20, 2016

I’m not really a fan of shopping, so when my mom goes out to buy things for herself, and comes back with items for you, it’s pure bliss. Sometimes she won’t even tell you about. You’ll open your closet and they’ll be there, like an apparition. And they somehow almost all fit! It’s wonderful.

Moms are the best.

6. She insists on paying

This goes without saying, and it is simultaneously great and horrible. Great cause sometimes you’re broke, but you really want that piece of clothing. But really it’s very guilt-inducing.

Me: “No, mama, I can pay for this.”

Mama: “la2, you save your money for food.”

Me: “…I eat at home”

7. Extensive knowledge of outlet stores

essay on shopping with my mother

I can’t recount the amount of times I was woken up early on a Saturday morning (weeps for lost hours of sleep) and whisked away to some faraway land of outlet malls and stores.

I need to know: is there some kind of mom newsletter that comes out every month about random outlet stores? My mother knows all of the ones in the UAE, Lebanon and Greece. I need to know.

8. The incomprehensible idea of closet space

If you buy one thing, your mom yells at you because you don’t have any closet space.

When she buys you many things, your closet space is magically available again.

9. Bribed to go shopping

Tell me why I went shopping with my mom today and she didn't buy ice cream — kylee (@da_kymaster) October 17, 2016

There are some days, if you’re like me, when you don’t want to go shopping. You’ve had a long day at work, or you just don’t really need anything. For some reason, moms are almost always in the mood to go shopping.

Me: “No it’s okay, mom, I don’t really feel life going.”

Mama: “Bishtreelik Cinnabon”

Me: *puts on comfortable shoes*

10. Remaining impartial

essay on shopping with my mother

Even if you’re on a shopping trip for your prom/party/wedding dress, your mom will not buy something for you and forgo buying something for your siblings, regardless of whether they’re there or not.

It doesn’t seem fair to a mom to see something so fitting (by searching thoroughly) for your brother/sister and not buying it for them. Haram, he/she would love it!

12 Emotional Stages of Going Shopping With Your Mom

Why must your mom look at every single, solitary item on every single, solitary rack?!

1. You're excited because your mom wants to take you shopping. Unless there's a huge life event happening, like graduation or prom, it's not all that often your mom takes you shopping and is willing to foot the bill. Your bank account isn't exactly overflowing with all the cash from your after school job, so the fact that your mom wants to take you is a huge deal. Maybe you can convince her to buy you that cute skirt you've been DYING to get.

2. Noooo! Mom won't go to that little boutique with your dream skirt because it's too expensive. Ugh. There go all your hopes and dreams of finally getting that skirt that you've been dreaming about for the past three weeks. Mom says you're going to the mall because it's more practical. You don't put up a fight because beggars can't be choosers.

3. Mom wants to go to all the department stores. Moooom, no! The only stores that matter are Forever 21, H&M, Brandy Melville, Aerie, and Victoria's Secret. Only old ladies shop at department stores.

4. You take a deep breath, suck it up and go to the department store. There has to be some good stuff there. You will do your best to plant a subliminal message in your mom's head to go to Express after she's done dragging you into the depths of every department store at the mall, though.

5. She doesn't like anything you like. Can I get this shirt? No . How about this skirt? Too short . What about this romper? In that color? Must she have an opinion on everything?!

6. Then she starts picking out all these hideous clothes for you to try on. Oh, the romper was ugly? Really? Says the woman who wants me to try on a a potato sack three seconds later. And she def wants to check out the clearance rack with all the store's reject clothing. Can't forget that! Uggg, why did you think going shopping with mom was a good thing?

7. You give up and just let your mom take the reigns. Your mom spends about 15 minutes sifting through every piece of clothing on every rack even though you told her you don't like anything on it. She barely takes your opinion into account before tossing another four items into the basket. She might as well have gone shopping by herself. At this point, you're just following her around like a zombie waiting for this day to end so you can go home with your brand new mommy clothes.

8. You spend hours in the dressing room trying on a million things until you're about to go crazy. Three-fourths of which you didn't even want. You usually like shopping, but when your mom is forcing you to try on that pink blouse she swears you'll look "adorable" in (a word you definitely don't even want to be associated with, mind you) and those flare jeans that were totally "in" when she was your age, the dressing room totally loses its flair.

9. Wait... a few of the things Mom picked out actually look really good. You were so ready to blast every item she picked out and tell her "I told you so," but you're actually really feeling a couple of the things she picked out. And even that shirt she found in the clearance section is a little gem. But after all the fuss you made, you hardly want to admit it. Can you tell her you don't like it and then sneak it into the basket?

10. Even though you hated almost every moment of it, you're actually checking out with some really nice new clothes. So you didn't get everything you wanted, but your mom did let you get a few things you loved, and her picks weren't all that bad either. You're still not wearing that pink blouse though. That was hideous.

11. Mom says you can get one thing at H&M! Or whatever store it is you really wanted to go to. Your subliminal messaging (AKA, you pestering her the entire trip) worked! What were you thinking? Shopping with mom is AWESOME. Even though it's going to be hard to find the one thing you want, you are ready for the challenge, and unlike you, your mom isn't impatient and is willing to walk around the store with you. She even feigns excitement when you pretend you're going to get the Shawn Mendes t-shirt. This is why you love her.

12. As you head out to the car with your new clothes, you realize you're going to look fly on Monday morning. Yes, shopping with mom was painful at moments, but she came through. You didn't get everything you wanted, but how can you complain when Mom paid for everything out of the kindness of her heart? Plus, nobody will be able to take their eyes off you when you walk down the hallway next week. Especially not when they see you in the skirt Mom found that's a dead ringer for the more expensive one you saw at that little boutique.

It is important to have a clear idea of what you are looking for before you start shopping. This will save you time and money, as you will not waste your time browsing through items that you don’t need.

You also need to be patient. Shopping can be a long process, and it is important to take your time when making decisions. If you are in a hurry, you are likely to make bad choices and end up spending more money than you intended.

Finally, you need to be savvy with your money. There are many ways to save money when shopping, and it is important to take advantage of these deals. Essay on Shopping Online:

Online shopping has become a convenient and popular way of purchasing goods in today’s world. With the rise of technology and e-commerce platforms, people can now buy almost anything they need with just a few clicks. This trend has revolutionized the way we shop, making it easier, faster and more efficient.

One major advantage of online shopping is the convenience it offers. You no longer have to physically go to a store, navigate through crowds and wait in long queues. All you need is an internet connection and a device, and you can shop from the comfort of your own home. This not only saves time but also eliminates the stress of traditional shopping.

Another benefit is the wide variety of products available online. With just a few clicks, you can access products from all around the world. This gives you access to a larger selection and helps you find unique items that may not be available in your local stores.

Moreover, online shopping often offers better deals and discounts compared to brick-and-mortar stores. With the ability to compare prices easily, shoppers can make informed decisions and save money on their purchases.

However, there are also some drawbacks to online shopping. One major concern is the security of personal and financial information. It is important to only shop on secure websites and take precautions to protect sensitive data.

In conclusion, online shopping has greatly transformed the way we purchase goods. While it offers numerous benefits such as convenience and variety, it is also important to be cautious and responsible while making online purchases. With proper precautions, online shopping can be a safe and efficient way to fulfill our shopping needs. So, embrace the digital world and enjoy the convenience of online shopping!

hopping malls are large retail complexes that have a variety of stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. These places are designed to provide a convenient one-stop shopping experience for customers.

The concept of shopping malls originated in the United States during the 1950s and quickly spread globally. Today, there are thousands of shopping malls around the world, each with its own unique design and offerings.

Shopping malls offer a wide range of products, from clothing and electronics to groceries and home goods. This makes it easier for customers to find everything they need in one place instead of having to visit multiple stores. Additionally, most malls have ample parking space, making them easily accessible for customers.

However, the rise of online shopping has impacted the popularity of shopping malls in recent years. Many customers now prefer the convenience of shopping from home instead of visiting a physical store. As a result, many malls are adapting by incorporating online shopping options or providing unique experiences that cannot be replicated online.

The convenience, variety, and entertainment options make it an attractive choice for shoppers of all ages. With growing innovation and adaptation, shopping malls are likely to remain relevant in the retail industry for years to come. Shopping malls also serve as a hub for economic activity, providing job opportunities for thousands of people and contributing to the local economy.

Moreover, shopping malls have become more than just a place to shop. They are now a popular spot for social gatherings, events, concerts, and other activities. This has transformed shopping malls into community centers that bring people together, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

In conclusion, shopping malls have evolved from simple retail spaces to complex and dynamic centers that cater to the needs and desires of modern consumers. Despite the challenges posed by online shopping, malls continue to thrive and offer a unique shopping experience for customers.

The shopping experience has evolved tremendously over the years. From traditional brick-and-mortar stores to online shopping, it has become more convenient and accessible for consumers. With the rise of e-commerce giants like Amazon and Alibaba, shopping has become a global phenomenon. Customers can now purchase products from any corner of the world and get them delivered to their doorstep in a matter of days. Overall, the shopping experience has become more than just buying products; it is now a holistic and enjoyable experience that caters to our needs and preferences.

Shopping with my mother is always an interesting and exciting experience. As a child, I used to accompany her every time she would go out to buy groceries or clothes. It was our special bonding time, where we would talk about anything and everything while browsing through the aisles of the supermarket or trying on different outfits at the mall.

One of my favorite parts was watching my mother haggle with the shopkeepers, trying to get the best deals and bargains. It was like a game for her, and I loved seeing her win.

But as I grew older, shopping with my mother took on a different meaning. It became less about buying things and more about spending quality time together. We would still talk and laugh, but now it was about deeper conversations and understanding each other’s perspectives.

My mother would also give me little shopping tips and tricks, teaching me how to be a smart and responsible shopper. She taught me the importance of budgeting and only buying what we really needed.

Even now, as an adult, I still love going shopping with my mother. It may not be as frequent as before, but it’s still a cherished tradition that I hope to continue for many years to come. It’s not just about the material things we buy, but the memories and moments we create together while shopping. And that is something truly priceless.

So, no matter how old I get, I will always look forward to going shopping with my mother. So, these were some interesting experiences that I have shared with my mother while we went shopping. But, going shopping with your mother is not just about spending quality time together or buying things, it also teaches us many life lessons.

From my mother’s bargaining skills, I learned the importance of being confident and standing up for yourself. She showed me that a little persistence can go a long way in getting what you want. And from her budgeting tips, I learned to be responsible and wise with my money.

But most importantly, shopping with my mother taught me the value of family and the importance of cherishing every moment spent together. As we get caught up in our busy lives, it’s easy to overlook these simple yet precious moments. But when we go shopping together, all distractions and worries fade away, and we are just two individuals enjoying each other’s company.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s rare to have such moments of quality time with loved ones. So, I’m grateful for every shopping trip I’ve had with my mother and look forward to making more beautiful memories in the future.

It may seem like a mundane activity to some, but for me, shopping with my mother will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s not just about the things we buy, but the love and connection we share while doing so. And that is something I will always cherish.

Paragraph about Shopping Online:

Online shopping has become increasingly popular in recent years due to the convenience it offers. With just a few clicks, shoppers can browse and purchase products from the comfort of their own homes. This eliminates the need to physically visit multiple stores, saving time and effort.

Moreover, online shopping allows for a wider variety of products to choose from compared to physical retail stores. Consumers have access to products from all around the world, making it easier to find unique or niche items. Additionally, online shopping often offers lower prices and discounts compared to traditional brick-and-mortar stores.

However, there are also some drawbacks to consider when shopping online. One of the main concerns is the security of personal information and payment details. It’s important for consumers to ensure they are using a secure website and to be cautious when providing sensitive information.

In conclusion, while online shopping offers convenience and a wider selection of products, it’s important for consumers to stay informed and take precautions to protect themselves. With the right knowledge and practices, shopping online can be a convenient and enjoyable experience.

Essay about Shopping Habits:

Shopping is a common activity that almost everyone engages in. Some people shop as a form of leisure, while others do it out of necessity. Regardless of the reason, shopping has become deeply ingrained in our daily lives.

In today’s fast-paced world, consumers are constantly bombarded with advertisements and new products to purchase. This has led to an increase in impulsive buying and an overabundance of material possessions. As a result, many people have developed a habit of mindless shopping, often buying things they don’t need or can’t afford.

This type of shopping habit can have negative consequences not only on an individual’s financial well-being but also on the environment. The constant production and consumption of goods contribute to pollution and waste, which in turn harms our planet.

To break this habit, it is important to become more mindful of our shopping behavior. This can include creating a budget and sticking to it, making a list before going shopping, and questioning whether we really need an item before purchasing it. It’s also important to consider the ethical and environmental impact of our purchases.

By being more aware of our shopping habits and making conscious choices, we can not only save money but also contribute to a more sustainable future. Additionally, by reducing mindless consumption, we can learn to appreciate the things we have and find happiness in experiences rather than material possessions.

Shopping should be a purposeful and intentional activity, not just another mindless task on our to-do list. So the next time you go shopping, remember to shop mindfully and make choices that benefit both yourself and the world around you. So let’s all start breaking our shopping habits and strive towards a more conscious and sustainable future. Let’s make every purchase count.

Finally, it is important to note that breaking a habit takes time and effort. It won’t happen overnight, but with persistence and determination, we can all develop healthier shopping habits.

So let’s continue to educate ourselves on the impact of our consumerism and make small changes in our daily lives that will lead to a larger positive impact on society and the environment. Shopping is inevitable, but how we choose to shop can make all the difference.

My Favorite Shop Essay:

My favorite shop is a small boutique located in the heart of the city. The moment I step inside, I am greeted with warm smiles and the sweet smell of freshly brewed coffee. The shop has a unique atmosphere that makes me feel calm and relaxed.

The collection of clothes they have is amazing – from casual wear to formal dresses, they have it all. What sets this shop apart from others is their attention to detail. The staff takes the time to understand my preferences and always helps me find the perfect outfit.

Apart from clothes, they also offer a range of accessories that are hard to resist. I have bought some of my best scarves and handbags from this shop. They also have a small section dedicated to home décor, which is equally charming.

Moreover, the prices are reasonable, and they often have sales and discounts that make shopping here even more delightful. I always recommend this shop to my friends and family, and it has become our go-to place for all our fashion needs. Without a doubt, this is my favorite shop in the city!

I can spend hours browsing through the collection at my favorite shop. The shop not only offers a great shopping experience but also supports local designers and artisans. Their unique designs and high-quality products make it difficult for me to leave the shop empty-handed.

In addition to clothes and accessories, they also have a small café inside where I love to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee with some delicious pastries. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day of shopping.

The shop also hosts events and workshops, making it more than just a retail store. I have attended some of their events, which were not only fun but also educational.

Overall, my favorite shop is more than just a place to buy clothes – it’s an experience. It has become a part of my routine to visit the shop at least once a week, and I can never get enough of it! Its cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and unique products make it truly special. It’s safe to say that this shop has stolen my heart. So if you ever find yourself in the city, make sure to pay a visit to this hidden gem – you won’t be disappointed!

Whether it’s for a special occasion or just a casual day out, my favorite shop always has something perfect for every style and budget. I am grateful to have found this shop, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Cheers to many more shopping sprees at my favorite shop!

So go ahead and treat yourself to some retail therapy at this wonderful boutique – you won’t regret it. The only downside? Your wardrobe may be overflowing with amazing finds from this shop! But then again, can one ever have too many clothes? I’ll leave that up to you to decide. Happy shopping!

Window Shopping Essay:

Window shopping is a popular activity that involves browsing through store windows and looking at various products without actually making any purchases. It can be a fun and relaxing way to spend time with friends or on your own. Window shopping allows you to get a sense of the latest trends, compare prices and explore new stores without committing to buying anything.

Dear God please do not take my mother from me any time soon I am not ready I do not know what I would be without her She has been my mother and my father since she pushed and pulled me through her earth the way a jagged little pill shoves its way ’round the mouth of history I love my mother like I love breathing air even when she bruises me with her words with her rage My ma has forever bruised me with her words with her rage When I was a horribly lonely only child I did not understand why she behaved as she did But when she got sick really sick a few years back I was terrified of losing my mother I had her speed-dialed to the hospital there in Jersey and sprinted me as fast as I could to be with her Ma said it was the first time she had been in a hospital since she had given birth And there she was flailing like a caught fish on a frosty metal table in an off-white hospital gown her belly had swoll so big it looked like she was pregnant with me another time And that is how it began our regular trips to the grocery store because ma could not move without immense pain without waddling like a penguin in the middle of a summer hurricane

Dear God my mother does not know that I often walk behind her on purpose as she grabs a pound of hamburger a bag of sugar a loaf of bread a box of cereal Aisle after aisle my heart spills a bucket of suds Aisle after aisle my eyes spill two buckets of suds like that day she slid as a baseball runner would onto the floor in her senior citizen apartment from her favorite chair and it took my entire back strength to boost my mother’s plump frame to get her up to her recliner And before I could there we were one-two-three-four-five seconds her on the floor me on the floor when she and I stared at each other as we may have stared at each other when I was a scared baby and her a scared young woman And in that very moment I wanted to tell my mother what she meant to me but could not because my mother and I have never hugged have never kissed have never said I love you And here I was the caretaker of a person who did not care to be touched by anyone

Dear God my mother’s legs throb bad Ma religiously rubs ointments on them like she is scrubbing grime from her bathtub She repeatedly refers to herself as being sick She says she an old woman She says she tired so so tired She prays to you God from can’t see to can’t see She says you will work a supernatural miracle and heal her body Lawd She says blood of Jesus each chance she thinks of it like Jesus fixin’ to be Superman and jump off that prickly cross My mother’s altar is the shopping cart at the supermarket She baptizes the handle with one of her wipes She cusses at me when I ask her to pull her mask over her nose She smooshes her worn black purse into the child seat where I once drooped my skinny limbs She clutches tight the cart says it helps her balance Ma is afraid to fall Ma ain’t gonna fall in front of no strangers My mother’s power is in the steering of the shopping cart She pushes it forward the way a truck driver inches their tractor through bumper-to-bumper traffic She wobbles slowly from the cart when she spots an item she needs three peaches four red apples five bananas a package of chocolate chip cookies a bunch of collard greens a carton of orange juice I straighten the crooked cart that ma always leaves in the middle of an aisle Hold my pocketbook Watch my pocketbook my mother chides me loudly when she wobbles from the cart Smashed inside her pocketbook are those wipes and tissue and cash and coins and her food stamp card and clipped coupons lots of clipped coupons and her crinkled grocery list neatly written in blue ink Ma has the list mainly in her head but sometimes glances at it when her memory is a throwback to the beautiful little dark-skinned girl on that porch in South Carolina But they did not tell little dark-skinned girls they were beautiful back then Ma thought only White people and light-skinned Black people were good-looking They did not tell little dark-skinned girls they could be anything So ma thought her life was munching the raccoon meat her desperate father shot and skinned Life was daddy beating her and her three sisters and brother and her mother as if they were slaves on an auction block because life for every Black was one big beating Ma thought life was signs and railroad tracks that told her where she could go what her slipped joints could not do was being branded “tar baby” and “spade” and “jiggaboo” and “spearchucker” and ugly real ugly by the local White folks and the local Negroes too just because she was born tobacco brown like James Brown Ma ain’t know nothin’ about no sexism or no classism Ma ain’t know nothin’ about bell hooks or Toni Morrison or Alice Walker But she knew she was Celie before Celie was Celie in The Color Purple This God is why to this day I believe my mother loves Whoopi Goldberg because when ma sees Whoopi in the movies she sees herself crashing through the broken glass of a dream deferred This God is why Black people got therapy sessions we name field hollers spirituals the underground railroad the blues jazz church dance the chitlin’ circuit prayer circles funk hip-hop holy ghosts barbershops hair salons Black Twitter talkin’ in tongues laughter the soul food we squeezed between our chained ankles and transmitted with us from Africa to them plantations Ma be sayin’ we don’t know nothin’ ’bout no Africa we ain’t African Ma don’t know Africa all up in her whenever she talks about the fish she gonna lather and fry about chocolate cake she sacredly crowns with pecans about potato salad she will punctuate with sweet pickles about wild and buttery cornbread surrounded and lassoed from scratch Food is my mother’s best friend because my ma ain’t got no friends except her sister Cathy and me Food is my ma’s best friend but the food has left her body wretched like the planet with diabetes with high-blood pressure with mysterious things she won’t discuss Dear mother you are real mysterious with all those doctor visits like you’re a bow-legged root woman plotting potions while lurking behind a sabal palm tree Dear mother you are real mysterious with the inflamed whip marks of your past held hostage in your bedroom drawer Dear mother you are real mysterious while heavy living room curtains smother your sunlight and your loneliness But you are not alone We are moon twins emotionally eating our way to the promised land You told me food is your happiness You begged me not to take away your happiness I will not mother I will not I see your beauty and your genius in the way you boil the water in the way you season the food in the way you create kitchen magic as you did when I was a boy I smell the joy on your house dress I feel the joy when you crunch and chew I sense the divine when you suck on that chicken bone And I know when the time comes for God to look herself in the mirror she will see you

Kevin Powell on his new poetry collection 'Grocery Shopping With My Mother'

SSimon

Scott Simon

NPR's Scott Simon talks with Kevin Powell about his new poetry collection, "Grocery Shopping With My Mother." In it, Powell reflects on their complicated and troubled relationship.

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

Kevin Powell's latest poems were written during what he calls in an introductory note some of the most difficult and introspective moments of my entire life. I am simply happy to be alive, truly alive again. His new collection - "Grocery Shopping With My Mother." And Kevin Powell, one of America's most acclaimed poets and hip-hop voices, joins us now from Brooklyn. Thank you so much for being with us.

KEVIN POWELL: Thank you so much for having me, Mr. Simon. I really, really, really appreciate the opportunity. Thank you.

SIMON: What were you going through, living through, as you wrote these poems?

POWELL: My mother getting sick, first and foremost. I'm an only child, and I had to do what a lot of us in America end up doing. The parent becomes the child. The child becomes the parent, the caretaker. And it was a lot emotionally to process because also my relation with my mother is very complicated because it was just her and I all these years. And so I went through all of that. I went through a sad divorce. My first marriage ended when COVID hit. One of my close, close friends committed suicide, sadly. And so it was a lot of stuff personally. And so it forced me, for the first time in 14 years, to start writing some things down 'cause I love the essay as a form. But I said, you know, the economy of poetry is where I want to get to 'cause there's so much I want to express.

SIMON: Let me get you to read part two of your title poem, "Grocery Shopping With My Mother."

POWELL: (Reading) Dear God, my mother does not know that I often walk behind her on purpose as she grabs a pound of hamburger, a bag of sugar, a loaf of bread, a box of cereal. Aisle after aisle, my heart spills a bucket of suds. Aisle after aisle, my eyes spill two buckets of suds, like that day she slid as a baseball runner would onto the floor in her senior citizen apartment from her favorite chair, and it took my entire back strength to boost my mother's plump frame to get up from her recliner. And before I could, there we were - one, two, three, four, five seconds, her on the floor, me on the floor, when she and I stared at each other, as we may have stared at each other when I was a scared baby and her a scared young woman. And in that very moment, I wanted to tell my mother what she meant to me but could not because my mother and I have never hugged, have never kissed, have never said I love you. And here I was, the caretaker of a person who did not care to be touched by anyone.

SIMON: So your mother never touched you?

POWELL: No. I didn't even know how to hug anyone till I got to college, and someone tried to hug me my freshman year in college. And I recoiled because I had never experienced any kind of emotional affection. And, you know, I think what happens with a lot of us is, you know, a lot of us, whether you came - your ancestors came from Europe or from Asia or your families came from the South, like my mother came from the South - you just kind of did what you had to do to survive. And what was not involved in the equation a lot of times was just emotional love, you know, showing how you felt about folks. And so that's what really made the situation deep for me with my mom. It's like, I have to take care of her, but I also still am that little boy inside of me who wanted to be hugged. Plus, I owe it to them because I would not be who I am as a writer if it wasn't for my mother. She took me to the library when I was 8 years old. She introduced me to storytelling, even though she has a grade school education. It was my mother who made me fall in love with words. It was her.

SIMON: It wasn't just that your mother didn't hug you. She - let me put it this way. She wasn't kind to you.

POWELL: There was - I'll put it to you like this. When I was a kid growing up, I remember there was a movie with Faye Dunaway called "Mommie Dearest." And I remember saying to myself, I relate to this. I love my mother unconditionally. I have great compassion for her. And I don't know what it's like, Mr. Simon, to be a woman in this world, to have to deal with sexism, to be a poor person that has to deal with classism, and then to be a Black person, to have to deal with racism - she had to deal with all those different isms and try to raise a child by herself. It was very difficult, you know what I mean? And so I had to just take a step back - and, you know, years of therapy, honestly, years of counseling - and learn how to forgive 'cause I think the big thing is, you know, here I am, someone who cares about the world. You know, I don't want to see a world where there's any kind of hatred, any kind of violence, any of that stuff at this point in my life. But if I can't forgive my mother, then I feel like I'm a hypocrite.

SIMON: But she...

POWELL: You can say it.

SIMON: All right. Well, she beat you.

POWELL: She did. Part of the reason why I'm a writer, part of the reason why I did write this book, "Grocery Shopping With My Mother" is because I believe that it's a form of healing. Like, we have to be honest about this stuff. And so my job as an artist, as a writer, as a poet, is to paint a picture and say, here's the different way we can go because the easy thing would be for me to just throw my mother away and just disrespect her. I still believe that this book is a love poem to my mother.

SIMON: Yeah. I don't want to leave your father totally out of this, although it sounds like he left himself out of your life.

POWELL: (Laughter) Yes, he did.

SIMON: That's your first line, is, I forgive you.

POWELL: You know, when I was a child, I - my father wasn't there. My mother and father never married. I saw him a couple of times, and then he was gone and left a huge - what I call a father hole. And what I realized throughout my writings through the years, I've talked about, since I was a very young writer, you know, absence, abandonment, the craving for love and emotional connections. You know, I write these poems because I think about family a lot, ultimately. You know, what does family look like? What does it mean, blood relatives?

You know, and I think about our country right now and all the hurt that's out there and the disconnects and how, you know, literally you can have someone - think about just last couple of years. We've had people shoot up a Black church in South Carolina, a Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pa., a queer club in Colorado. You know, this - and you start to - I start looking at the backstories of these people who are these shooters, usually males. And you see that there's some disconnect from any kind of love, any kind of family, any kind of sense of community. And the reason why I write the way I do and deal with very painful subject matter is because I don't want to spend the rest of my life hurting other people.

SIMON: Let me ask you to read from that poem, if you could.

POWELL: OK. (Reading) I forgive you for the hurt forever lurking there like a pipe bomb in my living room, for the hurt forever sleeping there like an unwanted partner in my bedroom. I forgive you because I heard how years later on your death march with a body part or two chopped off, missing, you asked your other children for me, the only one not there, the only one up North, the only one who had barely ever seen you, the only one who did not know you, the only one who never called you Dad or Pop or sir. I forgive you for dying without my knowing, yet I cried a decade later when I found out because the hole was still there. I forgive you because I also forgive me for all those many years I hated myself for having no father.

I've never read that aloud. This is - I mean, this poem, this book is new. I have not read that aloud, so that was really hard.

SIMON: Well, thank you for reading it.

POWELL: You know, what is my poetry book ultimately about? No matter what kind of parent you are, no matter what your gender identity is, just show up for your kids emotionally because if you don't, they end up carrying this stuff into their adult lives. And even though they may be adults, there's still that little child inside of them that's hurting.

SIMON: Kevin Powell, a great poet - his new collection, "Grocery Shopping With My Mother" - thank you so much for being with us.

POWELL: Thank you for having me, sir. I appreciate it. Thank you.

How to Write a 5 Paragraph Essay About My Mother

Writing about someone close to you, such as your mother, can be a meaningful and rewarding experience. One of the best ways to structure your writing is to use the 5-paragraph essay format.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps of writing a 5-paragraph essay about your mother, with detailed examples and lists to help you along the way.

Introduction

The introduction is your chance to hook your reader and provide a preview of what’s to come in your essay. Here are some tips for crafting a strong opening paragraph about mother :

  • Start with a strong opening sentence that grabs your reader’s attention. For example, you could begin with a quote about mothers or an anecdote that illustrates your relationship with your mom.
  • Provide some background information about your mother, such as her name, age, occupation, and any other relevant details to your essay.
  • Explain why you’ve chosen to write about your mother and what makes her so unique to you. This will help your reader understand the significance of your essay.
  • Finally, give a brief overview of the structure of your essay. Tell your reader what they can expect to learn from your writing and how you’ll be organizing your thoughts.

The First Paragraph

The first body paragraph of your essay should introduce your topic (your mother) and provide a thesis statement that ties your focus/theme to your mother’s significance in your life. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Start with a sentence introducing your mother and explaining why she is important to you. For example, you could say, “My mother is the most important person in my life because she has always been there for me, no matter what.”
  • Provide some background information about your mother, such as her age, occupation, and any other relevant details.
  • Explain the focus/theme of your essay. This could be anything from your mother’s resilience in adversity to her impact on your personal growth and development.
  • Finally, provide a clear and concise thesis statement that ties your focus/theme to your mother’s significance in your life. For example, your thesis statement could be, “My mother’s unwavering support has been the driving force behind my success.”

The Second Paragraph

The second paragraph of your essay should provide examples and anecdotes that support the focus/theme you introduced in the first paragraph. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by introducing the specific example or anecdote you’ll be sharing. For instance, you could say, “One of the best examples of my mother’s support came when I was struggling in school.”
  • Share the details of the example or anecdote. This could include specific conversations with your mother, her actions to support you, or challenges you overcame together.
  • Analyze the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. How did her support make a difference for you? What did you learn from the experience? How did it strengthen your relationship with your mother?
  • Tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how this example or anecdote supports your focus/theme and your overall argument.

The Third Paragraph

The third paragraph of your essay should continue to explore the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. Here are some tips for writing this section:

  • Start by introducing a new example or anecdote that supports your focus/theme. For instance, you could talk about how your mother helped you through a difficult time.
  • Provide details about the example or anecdote, just as you did in the previous paragraph.
  • Analyze the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. What did you learn from this experience? How did it shape who you are today?
  • Again, tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how this example or anecdote supports your overall argument.

The Fourth Paragraph

The fourth paragraph of your essay should provide a counterargument or opposing viewpoint. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by acknowledging that there may be other perspectives on your mother’s impact on your life. For example, you could say something like “While my mother has had an overwhelmingly positive impact on my life, I know that not everyone has had the same experience.”
  • Introduce a counterargument or opposing viewpoint. This could be something like “Some people might argue that a mother’s impact on her child is overstated and that other factors, such as genetics or upbringing, are more important.”
  • Analyze the counterargument or opposing viewpoint. Explain why you disagree with this perspective and provide evidence to support your argument. This could include personal anecdotes, statistics, or expert opinions.
  • Finally, tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how your counterargument supports your overall argument and reinforces the importance of your mother’s impact on your life.

The Fifth Paragraph

Your essay’s fifth and final paragraph should summarize your main points and provide a conclusion. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by summarizing the key points you’ve made in your essay. Remind your reader of your focus/theme, thesis statement, and the examples and anecdotes you’ve shared.
  • Provide a final analysis of your mother’s impact on your life. Explain why she is so important to you and what you’ve learned from your experiences with her.
  • End with a firm conclusion. This could be a call to action, a personal reflection, or a final thought that ties everything together. For example, you could end with something like, “My mother will always be my role model and inspiration. I hope I can be as supportive and loving as she has always been to me someday.”

Example essay about my mother

My mother is the most important person in my life. She has been there for me through thick and thin, always supporting and encouraging me to be the best I can be. Her unwavering love and dedication have been a constant source of strength for me, and I am forever grateful for everything she has done for me. Firstly, my mother is the epitome of selflessness. She always puts the needs of others before her own, and she never complains about it. Whether it is cooking my favorite meal or staying up all night to help me with my homework, she never hesitates to go the extra mile to ensure I am happy and well taken care of. My mother is sage and insightful. She has a wealth of life experience and a deep understanding of human nature, and she has always been there to offer me sage advice whenever I need it. Her words of wisdom have helped me navigate many difficult situations and have given me the tools to face any challenge that comes my way. I believe that my mother is the embodiment of hard work and perseverance. She has always been a role model for me when it comes to putting in the effort to achieve one’s goals. Watching her work tirelessly day in and day out to provide for our family has taught me the value of hard work and the importance of never giving up. Also, my mother has a great sense of humor and an infectious zest for life. Even in the most challenging of times, she always finds a way to make me laugh and to see the bright side of things. Her positive attitude and sunny disposition have taught me the importance of looking on the bright side and never giving up hope. In conclusion, my mother is the most amazing person that I know. Her selflessness, wisdom, hard work, and sense of humor have impacted my life immeasurable, and I am so grateful for everything she has done for me. I hope that one day I can be half the person that she is, and that I can make her as proud of me as I am of her.

Example 2: A Portrait of Strength and Love: My Mother

In the tapestry of my life, there is one thread that shines brighter than all others – the unwavering presence of my mother. She is not just a figure in my life; she is the cornerstone, the guiding light, and the epitome of love and strength. In this essay, I aim to paint a vivid portrait of the woman who has shaped me into who I am today. Body: My mother’s love knows no bounds. It is a force of nature, gentle yet unyielding, like the steady flow of a river that nourishes all in its path. From the moment I came into this world, she cradled me in her arms, her touch a soothing balm that could heal any wound, physical or emotional. Her love is not confined to mere words; it is expressed through her actions, through the countless sacrifices she has made for our family. One of the most remarkable traits of my mother is her boundless strength. She has weathered storms that would have broken lesser souls, yet she emerged from the tempest stronger than ever. I have seen her face adversity with grace and courage, never once faltering in her resolve. She is the backbone of our family, the one we turn to in times of need, knowing that her strength will carry us through even the darkest of days. But my mother is not just a beacon of strength; she is also a source of wisdom and guidance. Her words are infused with a depth of knowledge that can only come from a life well-lived. Whenever I am faced with a difficult decision or grappling with uncertainty, I know that I can turn to her for counsel, and she will always steer me in the right direction. Despite the many roles she juggles – mother, wife, daughter, friend – my mother always finds time to nurture her passions and pursue her dreams. Whether it’s tending to her garden, losing herself in a good book, or simply enjoying a quiet moment of reflection, she reminds me of the importance of self-care and staying true to oneself. Conclusion: In the tapestry of my life, my mother is the brightest thread, the one that adds color and meaning to the fabric of my existence. She is my rock, my confidante, and my greatest source of inspiration. As I navigate the journey of life, I am grateful to have her by my side, guiding me with her love, wisdom, and unwavering strength. My mother is not just a woman; she is a force of nature, and I am blessed to call her mine.

Essay on My Mother 500 words

My mother has had the greatest influence on me throughout my life. Through her, I have learned a lot of things about how to traverse the various facets of life. By seeing the kind of person she was while I grew up, I have modeled the kind of woman I want to become as well. My mother is my guide, idol, and source of inspiration in life, and I can say it with great pride.

My mother is the one person whom I can completely trust. She is the main reason for my progress and development since she works relentlessly. She never makes any distinctions within the family and provides our entire family with equal and undivided devotion and love.

Her devotion to her family is unwavering and complete. She puts her own needs and desires aside for the sake of her family. My mother has been my greatest source of inspiration and has played an important role in my spiritual, emotional, and intellectual development.

Mothers are an Inspiration

A mother contains several characteristics that make her the embodiment of love and dedication. She is forgiving and understands us when we make mistakes. She takes severe measures to fix our mistakes and ensures that we are aware of our responsibilities. From sunrise to night, day in and day out, a mother works tirelessly to fulfill all of our dreams.

A mother is someone who consoles you in your time of need, makes sacrifices, and makes every attempt to provide a comfortable life for her child. A mother is a selfless individual who, like the sun, chases away all darkness and shines the light of happiness and love onto her family.

Motivation is a state of mind that enables us to successfully complete any project or task. It is a form of a natural environment that aids our physical and social growth. We know that we can attain any goal, even in the most difficult circumstances, because of inspiration coming from a person or an event.

For the growth of our abilities, we seek encouragement from other sources, such as a popular figure or a special person near us who encourages us whether we can achieve the objective even in difficult situations.

As a result, we are capable of completing this task. Numerous people are inspired by legendary or historical figures, and then many people are inspired by famous people or their parents. It makes no difference who your source of inspiration is or how much you are inspired by its ideas and practices in order to achieve your goal.

Mothers are a constant source of inspiration and motivation for children to become good individuals as they grow older. They instill in them a sense of responsibility, care and affection for others, and a sense of resilience that can hardly be found anywhere else.

Every person must have some sense of creativity in his life from which he can draw inspiration in order to attain his life objectives and progress. A teacher might be an inspiration in someone’s life, a successful person can be an inspiration in someone else’s, but in my life, my mother is my biggest motivation. She is the individual who has motivated me to attain my life’s objectives and to keep moving forward.

My mother is also an admiration to me because, while most individuals work to gain popularity and a name in society, a mother never feels that. All she wants for her children is for them to achieve in life. She is not motivated by self-interest in her work. This is why I regard my mother to be a human manifestation of God.

My Mother is My Best Friend

My mother is my teacher, advisor, and greatest friend, and she plays many vital roles in my life. It works to instill confidence in me when I’m having an issue. Whatever I am today is solely due to my mother’s presence in my life, as she was present for both my successes and failures. I couldn’t picture my life without her, which is why I consider her my closest buddy.

Despite the many roles a woman plays in her life, the bond she shares with her mother is one of the purest relationships in the world. The bond between a mother and her child is indescribable. The mother is also the one who gives birth to her child and raises her. However, a mother’s love for her children never fades, and she is more concerned about their well-being than her own.

To safeguard her child, a mother is willing to face the worst disasters. A mother may shoulder all of the burdens alone, but she will not allow her offspring to be exposed to any form of heat. For these reasons, the mother is regarded as a manifestation of God on Earth, leading to the common proverb, “God cannot exist everywhere, therefore he made mothers.”

A Mother’s Strength

Although my mother may not physically be the strongest person, she nevertheless meets every challenge in her life and that of her family. She is a continual source of inspiration who reminds me to never give up in the face of adversity.

Above all, my mother is a major source of motivation for me, since she encourages me to enhance my abilities, academics, and talents. She inspires me to try again, to never give up, and work hard until I succeed. The way she traverses through the innumerable obstacles she faces in life is a constant reminder of the strength of a woman and how we can face any adversity that comes our way.

During difficult times, my mom is a lifesaver. Despite the fact that she chastises and corrects me, she is the only person capable of solving the problem, whether it is school or life-related. She is my instructor and guide, who shows me the way and steers me through the toughest moments.

Above all, even at the darkest of moments, she never leaves my side. She is an excellent teacher, a rigorous parent, a loyal friend, and a delightful companionship. Not only my mother, but every mother is an expression of God who devotes her entire life to her family and is deserving of much respect and admiration.

A mother possesses both inherent and learned attributes that identify her job as a mother. The key trait of a mother is responsibilities, which comes with motherhood. Regardless of age or repercussions, my mother displays unselfish love and affection.

She is my greatest source of strength and support, and she never fails to inspire and drive us through all of life’s ups and downs. Mothers can understand and empathize with their children. My mother’s most striking characteristic is her tremendous level of acceptance and tolerance. Despite the fact that she is dealing with several issues, she remains calm and patient.

An Introduction to the Essay

The word Mother is a very pious word and whosoever is called by the name ‘Mother’ is a person who sacrifices and prioritizes her children over anything. Her whole Life revolves around the well-being of her child, their growth, their development, and their welfare. A Mother not just only gives birth to a child but she takes a Lifelong commitment to take care of her child.

The only unconditional love in the world is the mother's love. My mother is my inspiration, my superhero, my best friend, and my guiding light. My life would not have been beautiful without my mother. Through ups and downs and in every step of life, she holds my hand and supports and encourages me. No matter what happens, my mother is always there beside me- cheering me up and motivating me. All mothers in the world are great and so, we should not celebrate their contribution in our life on Mother's Day only, which is 10th May, but every day of the year and throughout their life. It is because no gesture of appreciation is ever enough when it comes to acknowledging our mother. Her selfless love and sacrifice are the precious of all gifts under the sun.

An Essay on Mothers

My Mother- The Multi-Tasker

Mothers play an important role in everyone’s Life since she acts as a Protector, a Friend, and Guide for Life. A Mother does everything selflessly for her child and without any condition. There the love of a Mother is known to be Unconditional.

The way she manages my family with utter dedication and devotion is inspiring. The relationship with my mother is something very hard to explain. I do not merely love her because she is my mother and we should respect our elders. I love her because she is my world and when I was not able to speak and communicate she took care of me, time and time again. The best part about my mother is that even though I have grown older she knows and understands my needs without me speaking a word. I learned kindness and love from her. She taught me no matter how bad a situation might get, only love can improve it in the most effective way. She has been the rock-solid pillar of my life and in every big moment of my life.

My Mother has constantly supported me throughout my entire Life, whenever I am in a danger or in a situation where I am stuck, she has always been there for me, protected me, and guided me. She has been my favorite teacher who has taught me about Life and the beauty of it. She is the essence of truthfulness, sincerity, and lots of love. The only person who holds our family together is my Mother. She cares for everyone in the house and for the ones in need outside the house as well. One of the most beautiful things that I learned from my mother is empathy. Be it strangers or animals, she treats everyone equally which makes her more amazing. Moreover, she taught me to not hurt anyone on purpose and help people whenever possible. Not only this but also she taught me to not differentiate among rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. She says that it is the heart of a person that makes them beautiful and rich and not temporary possessions.

My Mother is my constant source of encouragement, be it in Life or in school for studies. She has always inspired me to do other activities along with my studies. She has taught me to enjoy every aspect of Life and live Life to the fullest. She wants me to do those things in Life as well which she could not do or pursue. She is my backbone for everything. My mother has inspired me through her hard work and sacrifices. She taught me once never to get disheartened by failure and to keep challenging the failure with our honest effort. And one day, failure will pave the path to our success. The strength of facing hurdles and overcoming it is what I have learned from her.

Mothers have never-ending qualities even though they do not get much credit for their goodness and hard work. She binds everyone in the family and plays a very important part in everyone’s Life. Even when I do something wrong in Life, she scolds me but at the same time, she makes me understand and helps me to get out of the situation. She forgives me after every mistake but ensures that I’ve realized my mistake first. She is the most selfless human being I have ever encountered in my life till now.

My mother knows me in and out. Even if I am lying she catches me immediately and I start feeling guilty. We should never lie to our parents and especially, to our mother. They simply do not deserve it. Mothers spend a significant part of their lives making us capable of standing on our own feet. Sometimes, they have to sacrifice their own career and happiness for that. So a mother's trust should never be destroyed. And when it comes to my mother, I would not change a bit about her. She is the best chef, reading partner, and an independent working woman who can balance almost everything with utmost perfection. Even her imperfection makes me proud of her. Without my mother, I would never become a better human being. My Mother is my biggest strength and makes me, even more, stronger when I go through all my ups and downs in life. The best thing she possesses is her patience. The patience she has is difficult for anyone to have. She deals with every situation in the family, in my life, or even in her Life with so much patience because of the reason the family is bonded so strongly. It is the responsibility of every child to appreciate their Mothers and give them the love and respect that Mothers deserve.

Famous poet George Eliot quotes

Life began with waking up

And loving my mother’s face

YES, we all start our day with our mother’s smiling face. My day started when my mother gets me up early in the morning. For me, my mom is the best example of love and kindness in this universe. She knows how to take care of us.

From the very tender age, I became a fan of her as I like my mom’s hardworking and dedicated nature. My mom sacrificed a lot in order to shape my life. She has brought me up with utmost love and care.

She could understand me even when I couldn’t utter a word. Mother is another name of true love. A mother loves his child selflessly and doesn’t expect or demand anything in return. My mother whom I call mom turns our house into a home.

My mother is the busiest person at our home. She gets up much before the sun rises and start to perform her duty. She cooks food for us, takes care of us, goes shopping and even plans our future too.

In our family, my mother plans how to spend and how to save for the future. My mom was my first teacher. She also plays a vital role in shaping my moral character. She doesn’t even forget to take care of our health.

Whenever any one of our family members falls sick, my mother spends a sleepless night and sits beside him/her and take care of him/her for the whole night. My mom never tires of her responsibility. My father also depends on her whenever he finds any difficulty in taking any serious decision.

The word mother is full of emotion and love. The value of this sweet word is truly felt by those children who don’t have anyone to call ‘mother’. So the one who has his/her mother beside them should feel proud.

But in today’s world, some wicked children consider their mother a burden when she gets old. The person who spends all her life for their children become a burden for their child at the last moment of her life.

Some selfish child even doesn’t bother to send his/her mom to old age home. This is really a shame and unfortunate incident as well. The government should keep an eye to those incidents and should take those shameless children in judicial custody.

I want to stand with my mother like a shadow all the time. I know today I am here only because of her. So I want to serve my mother for the rest of my life. I also want to build my carrier so that my mom feels proud of me.

I hated the witness at my mother’s murder trial for not saving her. And then I heard him

"They heard my mother scream, saw her kicking, fighting. They were close enough to know she wore gold stud earrings. And the people did nothing."

They called another eyewitness to the stand, this time a person who saw my mother's abduction before she was murdered.

When I read, years ago in the newspaper articles, that there were eyewitnesses, I had imagined small crowds standing on the curb outside the mall, how they held paper shopping bags, so heavy the handles creased their fingers. They were friends and family members who ate at El Chico together, shopped together, until this moment of parting in the parking lot. They laughed and were saying goodbye when they heard my mother scream, when they saw two men pulling on her, saw her kicking, fighting, biting, saw her fists trying to punch, her fingers to gouge. They were close enough to know she wore gold stud earrings. And the people did nothing but watch, too stunned, perhaps, to move. Too afraid to interfere. They simply stood there, their shopping bags weighed down as if by bricks, these people still as stone. And I hated them. Each and every one of them. For watching the show for minutes. I would have done something, I told myself. I would have thrown myself onto the car as the men drove away. I would have punched through the glass if I had to.

I thought I hated the witnesses who saw my mother be taken before she was murdered. I was wrong.

Instead of a crowd of people in their 30s, having aged not one day since I imagined them into being, I was confronted with Ron Hinther.

In my memory, though, he’s Roy. Because the journalist who wrote from Mom’s perspective wrote it as Roy in his cold case article, a mistake that ends up rewriting the real. Even though I know his name, I still see him as Roy with a heart-shaped face and small-framed glasses, a man with thinning hair who leaned forward on the witness stand, intent to answer questions.

He described how he and his roommate stopped by the mall and saw two men sitting on a planter at the entrance. The men “looked unkempt — unkept and sort of slouching, not having good posture,” he said. He looked at Melissa, the lawyer, as she asked her questions. He held his hands folded in front of his chest. “They seemed to just be sitting there and not do — and just watching.”

“And as you were walking to your automobile, did you notice something unusual?”

This was the moment my family and I had been warned about. “You’re going to hear difficult eyewitness testimony now,” the prosecutors told us just before they called Hinther to the stand.

This was the moment a person in the crowd would have to account for standing still.

I thought I hated the witnesses who saw my mother be taken before she was murdered. I was wrong.

“Yes,” Hinther answered. “We heard a woman yelling help ... I saw a woman and two men, and I believe about — what I see in my mind and I’ve always — since that time have seen in my mind, as I see the back door of the car open, a man at the trunk area, a man kind of holding the door on the back of the door and the woman somewhere in between the two of them at the trunk area of the car on the right — the left side of the car . . .. It happened so quickly. I remember seeing a man hit the woman either in the neck or in the back, she lunges forward, and it kind of propels her into the back seat of the car.”

He paused a lot as he described it. He kept closing his eyes. He lifted his hand to his temple, as if to unlock, in exact detail, the 24-year-old memory.

“What I remember is the door was shut, a man gets in the front driver’s side, a man goes around the back, gets in the other side of the front door of the car, and that car is backed out in just seconds.”

“How about their height, their body build?” Melissa asked.

“Always being a small man myself, I know that they were larger than me, I felt like they — I used to sell men’s clothing and I felt — as I’m thinking about it now, probably a 42, 44 jacket,” he said. “It was just a simple thing of backing out of the — and I just remember the taillights. They just backed out into the driving area, and then there must have been a quick exit because I remember the hopeless feeling of standing there and watching those taillights go down Villa.”

He closed his eyes again and shook his head at the memory, and I was right there with him, in the parking lot of the mall, watching the taillights disappear. When he opened his eyes, there were tears in them, and I no longer hated him for doing nothing. Instead I wanted to hold him, this man who knew my mother as I did —“she had not black, but brown wavy hair and a fairly pale complexion” — who couldn’t shake the memory, couldn’t save her, even after all these years.

“Could you see any movement inside the car or anybody inside the car at that point?”

“I remember thinking I hope I can see her head, and I never saw her head rise above the window.”

Melissa passed the witness, and in the time of transitioning between one person at the podium to another, from notes being jotted down, legal pads stacked, folders prepped and passed from hand to hand, Roy and I lingered on that image of the window, waiting for Mom to lift her bleeding head.

I thought I hated the witnesses who saw my mother be taken before she was murdered. I was wrong.

The other attorney took the podium and asked him, “Would you say it was dark?”

“Well I — I kind of remember in my mind I see that Oklahoma glow in the — at the end . . .. At the time I do remember the car looking out over those — the row of cars, and it seems like I remember that sunset, just a little bit of red in the — at the edge of the earth.”

The lawyer didn’t pause to consider the backdrop, to wait in the moment of dusk and see the land, flat and dark, spreading out before him, the sky an indigo except at the horizon, where a spot glows red like an ember.

“So you’re saying it’s a four-door vehicle to the best of your recollection?”

After a few more questions, Hinther was passed back to Melissa, who showed him pictures of the Colt. “Do you think — it could have been a two-door car that she was forced inside of?”

“I remember that the door seemed big, and I guess that’s why I was thinking there was a — that’s how they got in so fast, okay . . ..” Roy paused again, studying the pictures of the car, still frames of its taillights and doors. “Well, it makes sense to me that it was — it was difficult for her to get in because there was not a bench seat there, because I had often thought in my mind that she had landed on a bench seat, but she was — it was so hard for her — that’s why it was hard for her to get down and get back there as I see it playing in my mind. And then all they had to do was shut — get in right behind her. . .. To get in a car like that, I would have to put my foot in. And she got down so low, that’s what I — I couldn’t — I understand getting — you have to get down really low to get in those cars and that’s what I saw, and that explains why she was crouching so much.”

I watched Roy working it out, replaying it, the car in the photo now being rewritten in his mind. His testimony wasn’t as disturbing as I thought it would be. I listened to Roy and kept thinking, this is about memory, the slipperiness of it, the revisions and omissions, the mistakes. I wanted to tell him, We are not that different, you and I, trying to reconcile what lay in front of us with the picture in the past. I watched Roy tearing up and thought about bearing witness, how lost in the common usage of that phrase is its meaning of burden and weight, how his testimony was an attempt at atonement. I thought, there’s such unexpected beauty here, his voice trying to recover what’s been taken, the red at the edge of the earth.
