Getting The Facts Right About XAT

Overall, XLRI and XAT are like the rockstars of the management education world, and cracking the XAT exam and securing admission to XLRI or other top B-schools is like winning the ultimate trophy in a fiercely competitive arena. To appear for this exam, the candidate must have completed a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university or institution. The duration of the course should be a minimum of three years. You are expected to have secured a minimum of 50% marks in the Bachelor’s degree examination. For SC/ST and PwD candidates, the minimum percentage required is 45%.

Candidates who are appearing for their final year examination for Bachelor’s degree or awaiting their results can also apply for the XAT exam. However, such candidates must provide their final year mark sheets and degree certificates to the respective institutions within the given time.

The exam is usually held in the first week of January. However, the exact dates may vary from year to year. The registration process for XAT usually starts in August and ends in December. XAT’s Exam Pattern And Preps

The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) exam is conducted by the Xavier School of Management (XLRI), Jamshedpur on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). It is a computer-based test (CBT). The exam is conducted in a single session, and candidates are required to answer all the questions within 190 minutes (Part 1- 165 minutes & Part 2 – 25 minutes). The XAT exam consists of two main sections – Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 contains three sections: Verbal and Logical Ability, Decision Making, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation. Part 2 comprises two sections: General Knowledge and Essay Writing section. 

Coming to the paper pattern, for every correct answer +1 marks and for every incorrect answer -0.25 will be deducted. -0.10 marks will be deducted for more than 8 unattempted questions.  For part 2 that is GK, there is no negative marking.

Verbal and Logical Ability – 26 questions: The Verbal and Logical Ability section of the XAT tests a candidate’s English language proficiency and reasoning skills. The questions in this section are designed to test a candidate’s ability to comprehend and analyze written material and to identify logical connections and patterns in the material. To prepare for this section, improve your vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. Practice reading a variety of texts, such as newspapers, magazines, and books, and try to identify the main ideas and arguments.

Decision Making – 21 questions: The Decision Making section is unique to the XAT and is designed to evaluate a candidate’s decision-making abilities in complex and ambiguous situations. The questions in this section present a variety of scenarios and require candidates to assess and analyse the given information to arrive at the best possible decision.  This section is unique to the XAT, and the best way to prepare for it is by previous year’s question papers and mock tests. Familiarize yourself with the types of questions that are asked in this section, and practice developing a structured approach to problem-solving.

Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation – 28 questions: The Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation section tests a candidate’s mathematical and analytical abilities. This section includes questions on basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and statistics, and also requires candidates to interpret and analyze data in the form of charts, graphs, and tables. To prepare for this section, practice solving a variety of math problems, including those arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and statistics. Focus on developing your calculation and problem-solving skills, and practice interpreting data presented in the form of charts, tables, and graphs.

General Knowledge – 25 questions: The General Knowledge section of the XAT covers a wide range of topics, including current affairs, history, politics, geography, and economics. This section tests a candidate’s awareness of the world and their ability to stay current with current events. To prepare for this section, stay up-to-date with current events by reading newspapers, magazines, and online news sources. 

Essay Writing – 1 essay: Finally, the essay writing component of the XAT requires candidates to write an essay on a given topic within a designated time frame. This section evaluates a candidate’s ability to express their thoughts clearly and coherently, and to present a well-structured argument.

Candidates appearing for the XAT 2024 exam must be aware of the following changes in the exam pattern:

Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions have been introduced.

In the redesigned XAT exam pattern, each unattempted question after the first 8 will result in a negative marking penalty of 0.10 marks.

The time of the XAT 2024 exam has been changed from 9.30 AM to 12.40 PM. The time duration for the XAT exam has been extended. Instead of three hours, the XAT 2024 exam will now run for three hours and thirty minutes.

The total number of questions has gone up from 99 to 101.

The descriptive essay test, which was discontinued in 2019, has been reintroduced. Now there will be both MCQs and descriptive questions.

The XAT 2024 exam paper will have 4 MCQ sections and 1 essay writing section.

Percentiles will not be determined by taking into account the GK section having 25 questions.

The general knowledge and essay writing portions will not carry any negative marking.

There were five options for each MCQ, but only one of them is correct.

The essay of each candidate will be assessed after they have been chosen for the interview process.

The countdown counter at the top, right-hand side of the screen displays how much time is available for you to complete the examination for the part of the question paper you are answering (Part 1/Part 2).

After the allotted 165 minutes are completed, Part 1 will be locked. You will be moved to Part 2, the section of the exam that includes the general knowledge and essay questions.

For the initial part of the XAT exam (the first three sections), the scribe will get an additional 25 minutes in 2024.

Candidates were not permitted to leave the examination center before the XAT 2024 exam is finished.

PwD applicants could submit their responses at any time between 165 and 220 minutes for Part 1 and between 15 and 20 minutes for Part 2 of the exam. A PwD candidate could therefore leave the lab after 180 minutes.

XAT 2024 will have a total of five sections. Although both CAT and XAT have the same syllabus (apart from Decision Making and GK), the variation is in the sorts of questions and degree of difficulty. Both the XAT and the CAT are harder than other MBA entry examinations in terms of their level of difficulty.

No, CAT scores are not accepted as admission criteria at XLRI. Candidates must take the XAT exam rather than the CAT in order to get admitted to XLRI. IIMs and other B Schools use CAT scores. However, both CAT and XAT scores are accepted by numerous other top b-schools in India.

The MBA course fee at Bhai Gurdas Group of Institutions adheres to the regulations set forth by the Punjab Technical University in Jalandhar and the Punjabi government. The fees are Rs 83,150 per annum. The fees had to be paid on an annual basis.

XLRI , Jamshedpur conducts XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test), a national-level management entrance test for admission to its MBA/PGDM programmes. • There are no age limit specifications to be eligible for XAT. Both fresh graduates as well as working professionals can apply for XAT 2024.
• Candidates who have graduated in any stream from a recognized University of India are eligible.
• Final-year students are also eligible to appear for XAT. They need to submit their final documents within the admission time frame specified by XLRI.
• NRI Candidates and Foreign Nationals can also apply for the XAT with a valid GMAT Score.
• There are No Minimum Marks required in Graduation to appear for XAT.

XAT Pattern for Verbal and Logical Ability

According to the latest XAT Exam Pattern, this section would be comprising of a total of 26 MCQ-type questions. Moderate to difficult-level questions on Grammar, Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning are covered in this section. Some of the other topics that are covered under this section in the updated Paper Pattern for XAT are:

XAT Pattern for Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation

This section will consist of 28 MCQ-type questions as per the updated XAT paper pattern of both QA and DI. This section is said to be relatively difficult in XAT. Some of the topics that are covered under this section in the updated XAT Exam Pattern are:

XAT Pattern for Decision-Making

Decision Making is one of the crucial and unique sections in the XAT Exam. Candidates can easily score well in this section. Check the XAT Syllabus for a detailed understanding. This section consists of 22 questions as per the Exam Pattern for XAT. In terms of difficulty, Decision Making is a Moderate Section in XAT.

The General Knowledge section in XAT is dynamic and vast in nature as no fixed set of questions are asked. This section requires one to be up to date with the Current Affairs regularly. Even though GK is a prominent section as per the updated XAT Exam Pattern, the marks obtained in this section are not taken into consideration when deriving the final percentile. The number of questions under General Knowledge is 25 Questions and some of the topics covered in this section are:

XAT Pattern for Essay Writing

The Essay Writing Section was reintroduced in the XAT Exam Pattern after 2019 in XAT 2022. This is the only Descriptive Section in the XAT Exam. Out of 3 questions, you are required to choose 1 question and write a short essay (not more than 300 words). This section would require one to provide definitive thoughts and creative ideas. The Essay Writing Section is evaluated only when a candidate is shortlisted for the further admission process.

XAT Marking Scheme

XAT is one of the very unique and different management exams conducted in India. Hence, getting an idea of the Marking Scheme under the updated XAT Exam Pattern is important:

• +1 marks are rewarded, for every correct answer,
• -0.25 marks are deducted, for every incorrect answer,
• Additionally, -0.10 marks are deducted for 8 consecutive or more unattempted answers.
• The marks scored in the GK Section will not be included in the Final XAT Score.
• The marks for Essay Writing will be evaluated only when you are shortlisted for the interview.

The XAT exam was held in the English language only. Part I of the XAT 2024 question paper comprised Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VA & LR), Decision-making (DM), and Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI). As per the trends of the XAT paper pattern, the total number of questions that was asked in XAT 2024 was 103+1 AEW. The XAT exam pattern had questions multiple choice-based questions. The sections from which questions were asked in the XAT exam are- Decision-making making, Verbal & Logical Ability, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, and General Knowledge along with the Essay Writing section. The duration of the XAT 2024 exam was 210 minutes with no sectional time limit. Let us check the variable distribution of questions in the XAT exam paper.

Section-Wise XAT Question Pattern: XAT Pattern 2024

One of the key aspects of the XAT exam paper is the marking scheme. The XAT marking scheme pattern is different from other test papers. There is no XAT negative marking for questions asked in the General Knowledge sections. However, there is a penalty of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer. In addition to this, if the candidate leaves 8 questions unattempted then the negative marking of 0.10 marks is done. Check out the marking scheme of XAT.

• One mark will be awarded for each right answer to XAT
• - 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer
• - 0.10 marks will be deducted for more than eight unanswered questions
• There will be no negative marking in XAT in the General Knowledge (GK) section

The scores of the General Knowledge section will not be considered for calculating the XAT score

There is a variable distribution of questions in the XAT entrance exam, i.e. one section has more than another section. Apart from MCQs, one essay writing question will asked too in this test. Check out the sectional break-up of the XAT 2024 question paper.

Yes, XAT was held in an online mode, in computer-based mode.

There were a total of 4 questions in XAT namely- Decision Making, Verbal & Logical Ability, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, and General Knowledge. However, as per last year, an additional section of Essay writing was reintroduced.

No, there was no negative marking in the GK section of XAT.

XAT exam was of 210 minutes duration.

The questions that were asked are multiple-choice based questions and one subjective question.

The XAT 2024 exam was scheduled to be held on January 7, 2024.

Choose ONE of the three arguments given below and develop a coherent essay that critically evaluates it. Support your analysis with relevant claims, reasons and/or examples. The essay should not exceed 250 words. Argument I. Risk is the essential need of soul. The absence of risk produces a kind of boredom which paralyses in a different way from fear, but almost as much. Argument II. Rapid decarbonization to fulfill India’s Net Zero commitment will have business consequences. Argument III. Someone with half your IQ is making 10X as you because they aren’t smart enough to doubt themselves. Answer Question no. 1 if you choose Argument I. Answer Question no. 2 if you choose Argument II. Answer Question no. 3 if you choose Argument III. In today's world, when people talk of risk, they are mostly discussing a financial investment or a business decision. However, there are several types of risk - many of which are never considered or factored in while making decisions. For example, most people understand credit risk or financial risk, but rarely do we consider the moral risk or social risk of a decision. However, when it comes to the mind and soul of a person, these are exactly the types of risks that are relevant. And as people are risk-taking or risk-averse in a financial sense, they are similarly risk-taking or riskaverse when it comes to the other risks. Often, risk averse behaviour, in moral or social spheres, leads to an atrophy of the mind and a decay of the soul. When one thinks of social risk, the first example that comes to mind is the oftrepeated refrain - 'what will people say'. This one refrain prevents people from seeking out happiness and doing things that would truly make them happy. When people choose not take any social risk, they end up being inauthentic versions of themselves- an imposter of their true self. Similarly, when some one cannot risk failure in life choices, be it by leaving a job to start a business or choosing a field that they are well-suited for which isn't mainstream, they risk ossifying in life choices that prevent them from reaching their true potential. At a society level, when people refuse to testify to the truth or refuse to rise up to a tyrant because they cannot take the risk of failure, the society and the individual both suffer. Thus, risk is essential to reach one's true potential and to become one's authentic self. Without risk, there is no growth, and without growth, and individual will be a stunted version of themselves. The risk-reward framework that is often quoted for investment returns is also true for other forms of risk - the higher the risk, the greater the reward; for a person's mind and soul.
