My first-time experience at Hong Kong Disneyland

I was recently invited to experience Disneyland Hong Kong with my friend Paula and like what I mentioned in one of my tweets. “Everything here is Magical”. I hadn’t been to Disneyland before and while I was expecting to have a wonderful time, I was really surprised at just how great a time I did have.

The theme park is truly stunning, I learned that this is the only Disneyland in the world that has a scenic mountain and sea view as a backdrop.

There’s a reason why this is called the Magic Kingdom and the truth is, I felt like I’d been transported to a different place than this old world that sometimes seems anything but magic.

Despite being the smallest Disneyland in the world, Hong Kong Disneyland has a unique Chinese Culture inspired charm that will give you a more than the usual Disneyland experience.

Upon arrival, we went straight to Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel to leave our things in our well-appointed room and meet the marketing representative of HK Disneyland.

Our room was huge with two King Size beds, flat-screen TV, Mini Bar, a Huge bathroom with a bathtub and a veranda with a wonderful sea view.

From Keycard to the notepad in the table, everything reminds me of my childhood dream… to visit Disneyland.

Our stay at the Disneyland Hotel was fantastic but I had a few other highlights that I thought really made this the experience of a lifetime.

As part of our sponsored trip, I was fortunate to be able to truly enjoy the Flight of Fantasy Parade. The Humid temperature can’t stop the huge crowd to flock the main street as we wait for the most awaited parade.

As you guys know, I’m a huge fan of great parades, but this was beyond anything else I’ve ever experienced.

If you plan to watch Flight of Fantasy Parade in the future, consider going there early in order to secure a spot with a great vantage point.

The parades begin everyday at 3:30 P.M. and they are a celebration of all the great Disney characters and stories that we all grew up with. From Winnie the Pooh to Buzz Lightyear, all of the great Disney characters made a real life appearance.

Snow White, Dumbo, the seven dwarfs, Cinderella, Simba, Tantor, and my all time favorites, King Louie and Baloo from the Jungle Book.

Not only were the characters there, they were also singing those favorite Disney songs like “I wanna be like you -hoo hoo hoo.”

Also, I know it’s a bit cheesy, but I loved “It’s a small world.” I wasn’t alone either, I thought I was going to be one of the only Filipinos there, but when we went through the boat ride and looked at all the costumes from around the world and the amazing animatronic dolls singing, I heard small voices behind me singing along ‘kay liit lang ng mundo’ and I admit, it I felt like the world really is a small and beautiful place.

Very enjoyable too was the Golden Mickey’s Award which is a like a Disney version of the Oscars with favorite Disney films winning favorite Disney awards and being presented by favorite Disney characters.

The show had plenty of song and dance and great exhibitions of martial arts and my favorite acrobatics. Awesome.

As the sun went down the Tinkerbell Castle illumination made the whole park seem that much more magical with colored lights, music, and of course fireworks.

I don’t know how they did it, but I swear, I saw her there, zipping around amongst the spires. I’d love to catch her and take her home with me, but instead, I guess I’ll have to come back to see her again.

The Happiest Place in Hong Kong in our Hong Kong Disneyland Review

If there was one thing that the kids were looking forward to most for our last Asia trip, it was Hong Kong Disneyland! If I’m being honest, I was looking forward to it too. I love Disneyland and I had heard that Hong Kong Disneyland is great. I wasn’t disappointed!

Disneyland is known as the happiest place on earth and it really can be. There is something so magical about seeing Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, watching a parade or going on the  It’s A Small World attraction. It’s cheesy but it’s so well done that it can be impossible to not fall under its charm.

Hong Kong Disneyland is actually the fifth Disneyland and I have visited and the third one I have visited with currently 6 year old S. The boys in our family had never been to one before.

This Hong Kong Disneyland review (and tips!) will focus on what’s great about Disneyland for people who have never been to one before and also the differences for people who have!

Hong Kong Disneyland Review

Hong Kong Disneyland is set up like all the others. The park starts with Main Street USA. This area is full of shops and restaurants and it’s fun to stop here on the way out for a souvenir.

At the end of Main Street USA is a roundabout and this is the place to venture to all the other lands in the park. At Hong Kong Disneyland, there are six: Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Adventureland, Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point and Toy Story Land.

Every land is home to a unique look and feel and its own attractions, shops and eating establishments. Some are quite small, others are quite large. They are all well presented, fun and feel self contained. It’s fun to just walk around and appreciate the differences.

Tomorrowland

We started off in Tomorrowland as I had heard the rides have the longest queues. It’s a fun land with a couple of great rides.

It is home to what we thought is the best attraction – the Iron Man Experience. This ride is awesome! You feel like you are flying above the Hong Kong skyline as Iron Man takes on various big, bad robots. It’s a 4D experience that feels very real. It’s not very scary but it is breath taking. If you go on just one ride in this park (I’m not sure why you would do that but just in case!), this is it!

There’s also Hyperspace Mountain, a fun roller coaster in the dark with Space Wars theming which is similar to Space Mountain at other parks. We also loved the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters which is lots of fun with kids. Mr 5 loved meeting Star Wars characters

Fantasyland

Cinderella’s Carousel

Fantasyland was up next and this is where you find all the fairy tale themed attractions. It has always been one of my favourite lands, even before I had kids as it’s the most magical part of the park. Little kids are going to absolutely love it!

There’s Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, a carousel, It’s a Small World , a super awesome 3D show with Mickey, Donald and many other Disney characters, and much more. This is one of the largest areas of the park and we spent awhile here.

Adventureland

Next up is Adventureland. Here, there is a river with a fun boat ride and Tarzan’s Treehouse. There is also a Lion King show which I have heard is fantastic but unfortunately it was not running and the Tarzan attractions were closed on the day we visited.

Grizzly Gulch

Grizzly Gulch is another fun themed land. It’s rocky with geysers! The geysers make for a fun area to play especially if it’s hot as it’s a water play area. There’s also lots of Wild West theming which makes it fun to hang out here for awhile.

It’s home to Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars. This is a roller coaster which is so. much. fun! Initially, I thought it was a bit boring but then a bear caused an electric shortage and the ride gave me a huge shock as well!

Mystic Point

Be careful! There are ghosts in there!

This is a very grand looking land with a big mansion at the focal point. Of course, the mansion is haunted and it makes for a very fun ride. So fun, in fact, that we did it three times!

Toy Story Land

Our final land perhaps should have been our first (see tips below) and was the fun looking Toy Story Land! It’s home to a few outside rides, two of which look like possibly the most thrilling in the park which I did find surprising in a land I thought would be for little kids.

My favourite part of Disneyland is the parades! And I wasn’t disappointed. Hong Kong Disneyland had three on the day we visited.

I love how happy and fun the parades are. I find it elating to watch and the kids absolutely lapped it up especially when Disney characters interacted with them and pulled them in. Don’t miss the parades!

Hong Kong Disneyland vs other Disneylands?

Hong Kong Disneyland is probably the most different to the other parks I have visited. It has many of the old favourites, although often with a twist, like (Hyper)space Mountain.  It also has many attractions I hadn’t seen before. I especially loved how the Iron Man Adventure had such strong Hong Kong theming. It was fun to see Hong Kong like that.

Hong Kong Disneyland is the newest of the Disneylands I have visited (Shanghai opened last year) and it’s easy to tell this. The rides are more modern and updated and this accounts for some of the differences I experienced. This is a big plus for Hong Kong Disneyland.

The biggest plus of all for us was how much smaller the crowds were. I had a much more pleasant experience than my visits to other parks. You can read about our visit to Disney World here or Disneyland Paris here .

Part of this might be when we visited (although we were at this park during Easter school holidays) but I think as a general rule it is a less busy place to visit. Many friends have told me they have visited without having to line up much at all!

Most of the day, line times did not get higher than 30 minutes and we did not line up more than 20 minutes anywhere. Some rides had no line at all. Even when we left when it was at its busiest, the longest time was 50 minutes and that was just one ride. This is such a different experience for me!

I also loved how much English is used at the park. I did not feel like we missed out at all by not speaking the local language which was different to my experience at Tokyo Disneyland where more was in Japanese.

Something that I did not enjoy as much was that there seemed to be a lack of live shows. There was barely anything other than the parades. It’s good to have an excuse to sit down and relax for a minute while being entertained.

The only other negative difference I noticed was the small Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. Usually this is the landmark attraction of the park but it wasn’t as good at this one.

Visiting Hong Kong Disneyland with kids?

Our Hong Kong Disney review took place with our 3 kids aged 5, 6 and 10 months old.

As we expected, our Disneyland Hong Kong review found that it is an excellent place to visit with kids! They loved it which meant we did too!

I loved Disneyland before I had kids but it is extra special seeing the look of wonder on my kids’ faces. We found this a very accessible and easy Disneyland to visit too thanks to lower crowd numbers.

Many rides have no minimum height and when there is, it’s usually 102cm. Our just turned 5 year old could do everything he wanted.

It was definitely more trying visiting Disneyland with a baby and the experience justified why previously I only took our oldest kid and left a toddler Z behind with my husband. There is just not much for a baby to do which means one adult was always left behind looking after baby J. On the upside, he was free.

What is super annoying is that I only found out just before we left the park that they do allow “rider switch”. This is where you can both line up with your child who won’t ride and then take turns going on the ride while the other adult looks after your kid. This means you don’t have to line up from scratch after one adult has done the ride (which is what we did for the better rides!).

I wish we had known this from the start! It’s written in fine print on the map. They say to ask staff at the attraction if you want to do this. Learn from us!

The park is very stroller friendly. We took our own but you can also hire one. There are many stroller parking areas and you are given a strap to write your name on to attach to the pram. There is a baby care centre and change tables across the park.

Something else to look out for when visiting with kids is that the staff have stickers. Your kids can go up to staff members and ask for them.

Tips for visiting Hong Kong Disneyland

• The wait times for attractions get longer as the days go on so get there at opening and do as many as you can as early as you can.
• The longest wait times were in Toy Story Land and Tomorrowland. Start at Toy Story Land as the main rides in Tomorrowland have fast passes.
• Use fast passes for the three rides that have them – Hyperspace Mountain, Iron Man Adventure and Winnie the Pooh.
• Don’t eat anywhere near the parade straight after it finishes! The biggest mistake we made was trying to eat in Fantasyland just after the parade finished. It took 50 minutes to get simple, self serve food! Eat early.
• Food is expensive. Eat something before you enter.
• Go to the parades. They are so much fun.
• Go for two days! Every time I visit a Disneyland I promise myself I will visit for two days next time then never do. You can do a fair bit in one day but it would be much less stressful to visit over two.

We arrived about 20 minutes before the park opened at 10:30am. You are allowed in but only to a small section of Main Street USA.

Getting to Hong Kong Disneyland

We found it easy to get to our Disney Hong Kong review thanks to Hong Kong’s top rate transportation system. You can catch a train all the way to the park.

There is a special Disney train from Sunny Bay station. It just goes one stop and is fun in itself since it is Disney themed with Mickey Mouse shaped windows and hand grips. It also had classic Disney character statues. You use your octopus card as per any other Hong Kong train.

It’s a short walk from the station to the park.

Our verdict

We loved Hong Kong Disneyland!

There is just something so special and magical about Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland captures this well. You only need to see the smiles on the faces during the parade to know this is one great place.

Our kids especially loved Hong Kong Disneyland. It was a bit wasted on Baby J but Mr 5 and Miss 6 were probably the perfect age to absolutely love it. I am so glad we took them.

I especially loved this visit as I found Disney World with Miss S and Disneyland Paris quite stressful thanks to huge crowds and issues with the public transportation in Paris.  Disneyland Hong Kong had none of these problems and was loads of fun with a special dose of that Disney magic.

What’s New & Next in 2024 at Hong Kong Disneyland

Arendelle – World of Frozen – This new land is the biggest expansion at Hong Kong Disneyland in a decade. World of Frozen is home to two attractions, including an enhanced version of the Frozen Ever After boat ride and the all-new roller coaster, Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs. World of Frozen also offers unique character experiences at the Playhouse in the Woods, plus a restaurant, retail, and other things to do.

“Momentous” Nighttime Spectacular – The new fireworks show above Castle of Magical Dreams features close to 40 classic Disney moments, nearly 150 cherished characters, and comes to life with multimedia elements, including large scale 3D projection mapping technology, choreographed fountains, illuminated water projection, lasers, theatrical lighting, pyrotechnics, and fireworks effects. What’s more, your ears will be regaled with newly-reimagined classic Disney songs. It’s a spellbinding experience that’s sure to melt hearts, warm smiles, and reawaken beloved memories.

Castle of Magical Dreams – The reimagined castle transformed the tiny Sleeping Beauty Castle into a much taller monument to 13 stories of beloved Disney Princesses and heroines. The Castle of Magical Dreams celebrates Cinderella, Tiana, Aurora, Ariel, Mulan, Snow White, Moana, Merida, Belle, Rapunzel, Pocahontas, Jasmine, plus Anna and Elsa. More Marvel…?   – Over the course of the last several years, Marvel attractions have debuted at Hong Kong Disneyland. Tomorrowland is now home to Stark Expo, which currently includes the Iron Man Experience simulator and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle! The former is a simulator very similar to Star Tours, whereas the latter is a shooter attraction that reimagined Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters.

At some point in the future, a Marvel E-Ticket  might  be built in Tomorrowland. Although originally announced several years ago, those plans are still up in the air. Between the closures and prior financial struggles–plus Disneyland in California revisiting the E-Ticket concept–it’s unclear what, if anything, else will be built.

The Hong Kong government released a report last year indicating that only about half of the original expansion budget has been spent, but it’s unclear whether the other half will still come to fruition, or if the company and city will cut their losses. Hong Kong Disneyland as a Destination

We’ll start by noting that the U.S. State Department issued an advisory for Hong Kong, but with a Level 2 status, recommending that American travelers “exercise increased caution.” This is one level below mainland China.

For our part, we feel perfectly safe in Hong Kong and want to support the country and its people to the extent that they have a degree of autonomy, and their own economic and administrative systems. But the degree to which that’s still the case is murky, at best. I would like to think that people being willing to visit Hong Kong but not mainland China does send a message, but that’s probably wishful thinking.

Setting aside that dilemma, Hong Kong Disneyland is not a destination resort for the average American who needs to fly 16+ hours to get there. We absolutely adore Hong Kong Disneyland, but no American should make the expensive trip to Hong Kong solely for this theme park. That would just be foolish and excessive for a park that is a 1-day park for 95% of guests and a 2-day park only for extreme Disney fans. Fortunately, there are a couple of other ways to visit Hong Kong Disneyland that do make the trip reasonable.

We’ve been to Hong Kong Disneyland a few times, and each time, that has been in conjunction with another destination. Our first two times, we did Tokyo Disney Resort after HKDL, treating it as the “Gateway to Tokyo Disney Resort.” During one visit, we went to Hong Kong after Shanghai Disneyland.

There are a few reasons for stopping in Hong Kong. First, it’s very easy to book Hong Kong as a stopover on the way to Tokyo or Shanghai, which means that it’s inexpensive to add Hong Kong to an Asia trip from an airfare perspective. (We are aware that a lot of people don’t understand how stopovers work, so you can read about that in our “ How to Visit 3 Disney Destinations on 1 Airfare ” post.)

Second, while Hong Kong Disneyland has come into its own as of the last couple of years in terms of being a quality Disney theme park, it still doesn’t compare to Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea, or Shanghai Disneyland. You should not fly to Asia solely for Hong Kong Disneyland.

Finally, although we don’t believe there’s a substantial language barrier at Tokyo Disney Resort or Shanghai Disneyland, English is much more common in Hong Kong (a British colony until the late 1990s), making it a good way to ease into a foreign environment for those inexperienced with international travel.

There’s a lot more you’ll need to know for those visits! Hong Kong Disneyland is far and away the easiest of the trio to visit. It’s the most charming and laid back Disney park on the planet.

Another option is to visit Hong Kong Disneyland as part of a trip to Hong Kong and Macau. Hong Kong is frequently described as where “East Meets West,” and there’s truly something for everyone. From temples and shrines to a developed metropolis, Hong Kong has it all. It’s truly one of our favorite cities in the world.

Macau is akin to Las Vegas on steroids, and is a place where you can find UNESCO World Heritage Sites mere streets away from larger than life casinos. Macau is something else–really unique and well worth seeing. Definitely not among our favorite places in the world, but we’re glad we’ve been there before, and recommend it to others if “Vegas on Steroids but with Old World Heritage” catches your curiosity.

(For those unfamiliar with Hong Kong, although technically part of China, it’s a “Special Administrative Region” on an outlying island, meaning that visiting locations in mainland China like Shanghai and Beijing requires another flight.)

Much like Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland is a bit of a melting pot in terms of guest demographics. Many visitors come from Hong Kong, but it seems that just as many come from mainland China (there’s a pretty big difference between the two).

Hong Kong Disneyland also sees its fair share of Australians, guests from other countries in Asia, and a variety of guests from other English speaking countries. Cantonese, Mandarin, and English are all commonly-spoken languages by Cast Members at Hong Kong Disneyland. In fact, some attractions offer options for each of those three languages.

Some attractions and aspects of the park are not in English, but as English-speaking guests, we did not at all feel isolated or at a disadvantage. The things that aren’t in English are pretty easy to understand given their largely visual nature, or through subtitles. We do not view Hong Kong Disneyland as having any significant language barrier.

How Long to Visit

We sort of touched upon this in the section above, but unless you’re a really serious Disney fan, we recommend one day at Hong Kong Disneyland. Contrary to popular lore, Hong Kong Disneyland is not a half day park. It’s also probably not a two day park, though. If you do opt for two days, that gives you time to slow down and do just about everything, plus repeat favorites, have a table service meal or two, and soak up the ambiance. That much time is not necessary (except perhaps on national holidays?), though.

You can hit the highlights in a single day, and if you’re traveling all the way to Hong Kong, you might want to allocate any additional time to exploring the city. If you are in any way crunched for time, (e.g. visiting both Hong Kong and Shanghai Disneyland or Tokyo), don’t spend more than 1 of your theme park days at Hong Kong Disneyland; spend the rest of your time at Shanghai Disneyland and/or Tokyo Disney Resort.

When to Visit

Basically, you want to avoid three times: 1) the summer tourist season (not only are crowds high, but so is humidity–the area around Hong Kong Disneyland might technically be a jungle), 2) weekends, and 3) holidays, especially the Chinese New Year.

We’ve heard that crowds can be very high during these times. During our weekday off-season Christmas visit, the park seemed empty by US standards. There were several times in the middle of the day when Mystic Manor was a walk-on, and only a handful of popular, low-capacity rides had prohibitive waits.

When we returned in the summer, the humidity was killer. We will never go back to Hong Kong Disneyland between May and September ever again because the humidity is simply too brutal to have a pleasant time.

Halloween season is another time of year that Hong Kong Disneyland, but whether you should avoid it or go because of this is a good question. We went during Halloween a couple of years ago, and it was amazing. Take a look at our photos and thoughts on the elaborate (and genuinely scary!) The one downside was that it was still pretty humid, but not nearly as bad. We wouldn’t hesitate to go back at Halloween-time, simply because the entertainment is so awesome. Crowds are a bit higher, but it’s totally worth it.

What to Pack

As always, we think the items on our Unique Disney Packing List will be helpful in any of the Disney theme parks. Specific to Hong Kong, we note that since it is a jungle (or jungle-like, at the very least) environment, plan for hot weather. Things like Frogg Togg Chilly Pads will come in handy, as will moisture wicking clothing.

In general, we would caution against overpacking. This is especially true in terms of toiletries if you’re staying at one of the on-site hotels. Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel provided a large set of toiletries in our room (large enough that it was themed to the Seven Dwarfs and there was a different item for each Dwarf!). Remember, Hong Kong is a world city, and you can purchase just about anything in Hong Kong that you’d be able to purchase at a convenience store in Orlando.

If you are going to be staying in multiple hotels in Asia, we highly recommend packing cubes or compression bags (I prefer the cubes) for organization. You can read more of our “carry-on philosophy” and which types of bags we use here .

Getting There

If you are also visiting Hong Kong as part of your trip, we recommend doing the city itself before Hong Kong Disneyland, in which case taking the MTR into Hong Kong is the way to go. Our rationale for doing the city first is because it puts you at Hong Kong Disneyland right before your flight leaving Hong Kong, and you presumably will be on more of a strict schedule (since you flight has a set departure time) on the way out than you are on the way in, and it’s easier to bank on the 10-15 minute taxi ride to the airport than it is on the 30 minute to an hour long MTR ride from downtown Hong Kong to the airport.

The MTR is very reliable–it’s the best public transportation we’ve encountered anywhere in the world–but it’s still more predictable/safer to rely on a short taxi ride to the airport than a longer train ride, which means you won’t need to build as much of a time cushion into your return airport trip.

Phone/Internet

Fortunately, we didn’t have to spend too much time researching this, as we quickly learned that Hong Kong has an impressive, free-for-visitors WiFi network . Rather than paying for anything, we have just used the free public WiFi when visiting Hong Kong.

Free WiFi is now available in Hong Kong Disneyland. However, it’s very spotty, meaning that you won’t have internet access at all in some lands. When this has happened, we just did without internet for an hour or so.

If you will literally die if you don’t post to Instagram for an hour, check out rental options. We wouldn’t want to be responsible for a headline in USA Today reading, “American Abroad Dies From Snapchat Withdrawal.” 😉

We strongly recommend having a credit card with no foreign transaction fees for any international travel and also carrying cash for emergencies (plus small merchants and taxis that may not accept credit cards), but we didn’t find ourselves using credit cards or cash much in Hong Kong. Instead, we used what’s called the Octopus card . You think Walt Disney World’s MagicBands are cool? The entire island of Hong Kong has had the tap-to-pay system down since 1997.

The Octopus card is a reloadable tap-to-pay card that can be used at a multitude of locations, from 7-11 to the trains. It’s super easy to use, and how we paid for probably 75%+ of our transactions in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Disneyland has two official hotels, Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Hollywood Hotel, both of which are walking distance to HDKL. (There’s also a shuttle if you’d prefer.) We’ve stayed at each of these hotels, and will give you a quick synopsis of each, along with links to our reviews.

• Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel is the flagship, Grand Floridian-esque hotel, and it’s slightly closer to the park. We loved Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel .
• Disney’s Hollywood Hotel is a Deluxe-caliber hotel that is Art Deco stylized, cheaper, and about 5 minutes farther away from the park. We also had a great stay at Hollywood Hotel, and found it to be a solid value .
• Explorers Lodge is the newest, and best, hotel at Hong Kong Disneyland. As you can read in our full Explorers Lodge Review, this is our favorite hotel at HKDL .

If you’re on a tighter budget, there are also some nearby hotels that you can find on the usual suspects of booking sites. We’ve stayed at a couple of those, and would recommend the Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel. It’s basically a business class airport hotel. Really nice (and you earn points!).

In terms of perks, there’s no real benefit to staying on-site. Hong Kong Disneyland does not have Extra Magic Hours, an airport shuttle, etc. The train ride in from the Sunny Bay Station is really nice, so we don’t see the harm. The biggest benefit of staying on-site is the convenience of walking between your hotel and the park, and also being enveloped in the Disney ambiance.

We do not recommend booking a hotel in downtown Hong Kong for the entirety of your stay. If you visit downtown Hong Kong, you should do a split stay, changing hotels for the Hong Kong Disneyland leg of the trip. Much like Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disney Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland is a decent train ride from downtown, and you’ll spend a couple of hours per day in transit if you make downtown your home base for the duration of the trip.

Park Tickets

Park tickets for Hong Kong Disneyland are super cheap as compared to the US parks. You can save money on Hong Kong Disneyland tickets by purchasing from Klook, which will also allow you to instantly print your ticket. You can also use the coupon to purchase a discounted meal voucher for Hong Kong Disneyland .

One thing to strong consider if you’re going for two or three days and plan to stay on-site is to have one person in your party purchase an Annual Pass. Currently, the breakeven point is 3 days in the park for an AP. Given that most people won’t be visiting for 3 days and the fact that the lowest tier of Annual Pass has 100+ blockout dates, it’s not going to be a good option for most people. (However, Annual Passes offer a variety of discounts, including on hotels for select dates.)

Dining at Hong Kong Disneyland is pretty simple, too. The restaurants are generally good, have a diverse selection of options (among them), and cater to a variety of dietary needs (including a couple of places that are Halal Certified). Think of it as sort of comparable to dining in the World Showcase in Epcot at Walt Disney World.

As with Tokyo, make sure to sample Hong Kong Disneyland’s snacks. There aren’t nearly as many, but there are some good ones. These include the specialty drinks, seasonal donuts, Korean squid, turkey legs, and even Marvel-themed snacks in Tomorrowland.

Also, we highly recommend doing the dim sum meal at Crystal Lotus in Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel . This needs to be booked in advance, so stop in here the first night of your trip, or call in advance. If you are interested in character dining, our favorite option is the breakfast in Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel. As we wrote in our Enchanted Garden Restaurant Review, this buffet is one of the best character meals in the world !

Another thing worth trying is the afternoon high tea. As mentioned above, Hong Kong is a former British colony, so this isn’t out of place like it might seem. We have done high tea at both River View Cafe and Corner Cafe on Main Street, but we noticed that it was also available at a couple of other restaurants.

There’s also a Victorian high tea in Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel. The presentation of our desserts was excellent, and we felt it was well worth the money for the experience. This seemed fairly popular, so consider booking day-of reservations.

That’s really the bulk of our recommendations. You can find what type of cuisine each Hong Kong Disneyland restaurant serves here . You’ll notice not many burger places, so if you’re a picky eater, your options are limited. We avoided the burgers, and found the other options to be excellent and not so exotic that anyone should be scared away from trying them.

What to Do?

In our experience, Hong Kong Disneyland did not see massive crowds right at park opening like Tokyo. Rather, the attendance builds throughout the day, with the busiest time being in the late afternoon. We’re not advocating sleeping in (especially with the park’s short operating hours), but if you do, it’s probably not the end of the world.

There’s a lot more we could include in this guide, but Hong Kong Disneyland really doesn’t need to be “over-thought,” so let’s cut it off there. We will definitely add to this based on common questions, and I’m more than happy to offer assistance and advice in the comments if you have questions.

I’m curious, why do you say HKDL “does not compare” to Shanghai DL?

This is super helpful. We’re planning a Japan trip and when I run the numbers it is nearly the exact same cost to add a Hong Kong stopover. Might as well drop in! Thanks for all the hard work that you put in to write these articles.

You write like HK is some remote, unknown island! It isn’t! Also, why would you fly between HK and Shanghai? Take a super comfortable train or bus across!

??? Weird take. . .I didn’t get that from this article at all. As for paying for the train to Shanghai; it sounds like a decent option. But Tom also discusses the hard-to-beat idea of stopping over on a flight “for free” so. . .?

We hope to finally make it to HKD/Tokyo Disney again once everything opens up (we are Disney cruisers and have been to most parks many times over). I’ll be referring to these guides before any others – not only due to their Disney expertise but for practical suggestions for vibrant HK and Japan as well.

Why would you take a bus between Shanghai and Hong Kong? That’s a crazy long ride as the two cities are very far. Even a flight takes you nearly 3 hours.

There are few locals at HK Disney. Most Chinese are mainland tourists. It’s been 5 years since my last visit. I plan to be there next week again. Hoping it’s empty because of protests. Debating on a 1 or 2 day ticket… Curious to see if there is any diff on the DCA Chinese New year outfits vs HK Disney New year’s outfits.

It’s been about a year since my DLR/DCA anual pass expired… but I recall Turkey legs are available in California Adventures.

In my opinion, kids could also get toys at other times if they have been very good and good kids all the time. If there is any kind of trip or Disneyland going, then I think the kids should get something out there because the things they bought from the trips are still very valuable souvenirs that are not sold in shops, and every thing that is bought, will be remembered for their wonderful trips.

I highly recommend that you let the children choose what they like very much, their biggest dream and buy it. children may not like them at all.Purchase only the things that they really wanted and make them really happy.Sometimes they could rarely allow children to have the toys they deserve with their great nobility.If children are still very good, then, very rarely, they could just as well afford more expensive things. Very expensive things, then for the holidays.

I advise against banning things that children really like, because then they start plans to just want more.I advise not to buy all the time, but sometimes very rarely still be able to afford something if they have been very good children for a long time.I certainly also recommend that you let the children choose from online stores, because there are just so many rare, popular, exciting, cakey, and sweet things that may not be available in stores.

Hong Kong Disneyland Case Study

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to analyze the Walt Disney Company and their expansion into Hong Kong with the theme park Hong Kong Disneyland (HKD). The Walt Disney Company was founded in 1923 by Walt Disney. It was a company founded upon as an entertainment experience for people of all ages starting out with short films and then moving into full length motion pictures. Since its inception the Disney Company has grown into a worldwide organization and is made up of four major areas.

Those areas are studio entertainment, consumer products, media networks, and parks and resorts. As of 2005 only two of these four areas were profitable, those being media networks and parks and resorts. Up until the opening of HKD, Disney had only four other theme parks throughout the world. The original park, Disneyland Resort, opened in 1955 in Anaheim, CA. The second park opened nearly twenty years later in Lake Buena Vista, FL and was called Walt Disney World Resort.

In 1983 Disney went international opening up a park in Tokyo called Tokyo Disney Resort. This park was very successful and brought about the opening of Disney’s second international park in Paris called Disneyland Resort Paris, which opened in 1992 (Phatak p. 149-150). Disney Resort Paris was the least successful of the four parks for many different reasons, which leads us into the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland, which took place in 2005. Disney’s Strengths and Weaknesses As with any other company Disney has a long list of strengths along with weaknesses.

The strengths that Disney possessed in terms of the Hong Kong park is that it is the second the established park in Asia, the government is the largest stakeholder, potential for neighboring countries to fly in and visit park, has the lowest ticket price of all parks, the staff speaks English, Chinese, and Cantonese, and they took into account the Chinese beliefs and traditions (Phatak 152-156). The last strength listed, taking into account the beliefs and traditions of the Chinese is a huge factor in the success of this park. This is one area where Disney fell short in when it came to the park in Paris.

The major weaknesses that took away from the initial success of the park were the amount of visitors were below the initial target, the park was built in a small space which led to overcrowding, lack of rides and attractions (only 22- 18 fewer than any other park), the food poisoning case, and the debacle with the lunar new year (Phatak p. 155-158). During the lunar New Year HKD failed to take into account that the two days following this holiday were public holidays in mainland China therefore there was an influx of visitors on these days that the park could not handle.

They were forced to literally close the gates on thousands of people which caused a riot outside of the park. Disney’s Opportunities and Threats There were a number of opportunities that Disney would be able to take advantage of with the opening of HKD. Those opportunities were the growing population in around the area of Hong Kong and China in general, it would be a place that people in China and all of Asia would visit over and over again, the interest that the park would gain from the large population of children, and the “wow” factor that it would bring to the people of China.

With these opportunities also come threats. The threats that HKD faced were the fall of the world economy, the negative reviews of the conservative Chinese people, and the other local attractions that were already very popular in Hong Kong. The biggest threat in terms of the already established local attractions was Ocean Park. Ocean park had been rated as one of the top ten amusement parks in the world by Forbes magazine and essentially held a monopoly in Hong Kong as the only amusement park in the area (Phatak p. 53). Analysis of Disney’s Corporate Strategy Disney’s corporate strategy in regards to HKD was to provide a family oriented, entertainment atmosphere at an affordable price. Disney and all of its theme parks across the world symbolizes happiness and fantasy and the goal is to provide an experience like no other to all visitors of any of the parks. This idea was no different with the establishment of HKD. Aside from this worldwide perception that Disney has HKD sought to bring visitors for other reasons as well.

One of the main strategies was to offer this experience at a very affordable rate. The price for a one day was $295 in Hong Kong which is equivalent to $38 in the United States. Along with these low rates there were also many special offers that were constantly available to visitors. These offers included special rates for certain occasions, discounted rates for children and senior citizens and the ability to purchase packages through travel agencies. In fact HKD encouraged the purchase of tickets through travel agents and on their website.

They limited the number tickets that were able to be bought by walk up visitors to keep the wait to enter the park at a minimum. Another corporate strategy was the emphasis that Disney put on their employees or cast member as they refer to them as. Every employee that was hired was sent to the Walt Disney Park in Orlando for training to get accustomed to the expectations of a Walt Disney employee. Along with this extensive training each employee was required to speak multiple languages in order to cater to all guests that may be visiting the park.

With that being said the corporate strategy for Disney, and specifically that of HKD, does effectively reflect the SWOT analysis. The corporate strategy reflects that of its strengths while at the same time attempts to limit its weaknesses as much as possible. The corporate strategy is also in line with the opportunities and threats that Disney faced with the opening of HKD. The most important way went about facing the threats was to take into account the beliefs and traditions of the Chinese people.

By focusing on the little things such as the food that was served in the park, skipping the fourth floor in the hotels, in Chinese culture the number 4 is associated with bad luck, and constructing a ball room that was 888 square meters, the number 8 signifies good fortune, Disney showed they cared about the culture of the people this park was built for (Phatak p. 156-157). They even went as far as consulting a feng shi master in the layout and design of the park (Phatak p. 156). Considerations Raised in the Case Write-up

With the development and opening of Hong Kong Disney, Disney did an outstanding job of focusing on and understanding the different dimensions of the Chinese culture. With the experiences they had with their previous park in Paris, Disney was able to learn from their mistakes and understand that they would have to change the overall operating procedures to account for the different culture of the Chinese people. With Disneyland Resort Paris it seems that they essentially tried to build a park as if they were putting it in America and simply drop it into another country.

They quickly found out that this idea was not well received with the French people with the negative feedback that was received. The main issues were not with the physical nature of the park, but that of the rules and regulations that Disney Resort Paris had invoked. One of the major issues that came about with this park was the banning of serving alcoholic beverages (Phatak p. 150). In the French culture it is customary to drink with wine with almost every meal and the fact that the French people were not able to do this in an amusement park in their own country was an outrage.

Disney did not serve alcohol in any of its other parks and was very adamant about continuing this with Disneyland Resort Paris. For all intents and purposes Disneyland Resort Paris was a learning experience for Disney and it was very evident that they were not going to make the same mistake with Hong Kong Disney. By understanding the cultural dimensions of the Chinese people and adapting the park to the Chinese culture Disney was able to avoid many of the cultural issues it had experience in Paris.

With the exception of the Lunar New Year fiasco the majority of the issues that visitors had with the park were not culturally related. By making human resource management a major priority many of these issues were avoided. The extensive training that all of the employees went through, along with their knowledge of the culture already, it allowed for the visitors to feel like they were still in China, but yet still have a fantasy like experience with some American influence. Questions Asked in the Case

The culture differences that China offered were far different from those experienced with any other park that Disney had opened. In order for this park to be a success Disney had to address all of these differences and then some in order to make the Chinese people happy and ensure that they enjoy their time while at the park. Many of the major issues were addressed with the layout and construction of the park. However, one huge mistake, the Lunar New Year incident, led to years of negative publicity by the Chinese people.

That event had the potential to doom the park forever however; Disney was able to overcome it with promises that something like that would never happen again. Overall Disney did a pretty good job of achieving its goal of translating its strategic assets to the Chinese cultural context. They attempted to take into account the Chinese traditions and beliefs that seemed to mean the most to the culture and incorporate them into the park. This showed with the consultation of the feng sui master and eliminating the fourth floor of the hotels.

While these may seem like little things these are areas that could have led to the failure of the park if they were not addressed properly. There are many things that Disney could do to rescue the park from the negative publicity they were receiving. Some of the major issues that were behind this negativity was the how the staff was treating people and the size and lack of attractions at the park. Disney must show the Chinese people that they are actively working to improve these issues. One way is to continue to expand the park as much as possible and continue to add new attractions.

This is something that the people can physically see happening and it will allow them to see that Disney actually does care about what they think. Recommendations for What the Company Should do Next As previously mentioned Disney needs to continue to add to the park and create new attractions for the visitors. Hong Kong Disney must be a destination that people will want to visit over and over again. Not only do they need to continue to make improvements to the park, but they need to continue to sell the park as a vacation destination, not just a one day visit.

The more people that they can get to visit the park for more than one day the better off the park will be in the future. Another thing that Disney must do is continue to adapt to the Chinese culture while still providing an American flavor. While the Chinese people want to feel at home when they visit the park they still want to feel like they are in a fantasy land, as all people do when they visit a Disney theme park. Some people visit the park for the American feel they are able to receive. Finally it is very important that HKD continue to make human resource management a high priority.

Without the cast members, or employees, a Disney theme park is just another theme park with no real uniqueness. Many of the visitors come to see Mickey and all of the other characters and shows that are put on by all of the cast members. It is very important to keep this a staple of the operation and to continually train the cast members and make them aware how important they are to the success of the park. References Phatak, A. Review: Hong Kong Disneyland

When we traveled to Hong Kong this year, we finally went to Hong Kong Disneyland, which we’ve been dying to visit for so long. I’ve heard many positive things about Disneyland, but I still had quite low expectations since this is a place mostly for kids – I thought. 

It was much better than I had expected and there were several fun rides and shows for both kids and adults. I was like I became a kid again seeing all the Disney magic from my favorite movies. 

We went to Hong Kong Disneyland for a day-trip together with KKday , and down below you can read more about our experience in my Hong Kong Disneyland review!

What to expect

A magical park that’s both for children and adults. Meet the characters from your favorite movies and enjoy both themed rides and amazing live musicals.

Ride through the jungle next to Tarzan’s house, see the amazing Lion King musical, eat Mickey Mouse waffles, shop your favorite Disney-themed souvenirs and join the Toy Soldiers from Toy Story while they’re doing their parachute drop.

My thoughts of Hong Kong Disneyland

Alex and I had so much fun going to Disneyland in Hong Kong. We had heard many good things about the park, but we still went there with low expectations since we thought that the park mainly was for kids. Yes, it’s might true that the most Hong Kong Disneyland rides are for children, but if you’re a big Disney fan like me, then you’re also going to love it. And the rides are not only for children, there are actually a couple of rides that make you both scream and laugh at the same time.

It was so much fun, and we will definitely visit more Disneyland parks in the near future!

How to get there

Hong Kong Disneyland is located on Lantau Island, but is only a 30-minute ride away from the following stations:

• Hong Kong International Airport MRT Station (Change at Tsing Yi Station to Sunny Bay Station)
• MTR Kowloon Station  (Change at Tsing Yi Station to Sunny Bay Station)
• MTR Hong Kong Station  (Change at Tsing Yi Station to Sunny Bay Station)

It’s very easy to get there by metro, and much cheaper than if you would take a taxi. From the Sunny Bay Station, there won’t be a problem for you to find your way to Disneyland Hong Kong since there are signs everywhere.

Summary of my experience of Hong Kong Disneyland

We had a great time at Disneyland in Hong Kong. It was like we became kids again, and we had so much fun. Before going to though that Disneyland was a place for children, so I had quite low expectations – but it was amazing.

They had many fun rides, both for the kids and for the adults.

A brief introduction to Hong Kong Disneyland

Opened in 2005, Hong Kong Disneyland is the largest theme park in Hong Kong. Spanning 27.5 hectares, it is even bigger than Hong Kong’s signature Ocean Park despite being the smallest Disney theme park worldwide. Built on reclaimed land in Penny’s Bay on Lantau Island, Hong Kong Disneyland sees an astounding 6 to 7 million visitors annually. While this may seem like a lot, Hong Kong Disneyland has a lowered daily capacity of 34,000 visitors to prevent overcrowding. Additionally, the park design emphasizes greatly on the spiritual concept of Feng Shui – For instance, a bend was put in a walkway near the entrance of Hong Kong Disneyland resort to minimize good Qi from flowing into the South China Sea.

Fun fact: Hidden subtly throughout the park are representations of Mickey Mouse heads. Dubbed ‘Hidden Mickey’, these representations are woven into attraction designs and environmental decor. Keep your eyes peeled to find these Easter Eggs!

Tourist Secrets: Game plan for Hong Kong Disneyland

Here are some note-worthy advice to adhere to before even visiting the theme park.

Visits in the summer can be stifling, so be sure to bring along or purchase an electric fan and umbrella to stay cool. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated!

Meals in Hong Kong Disneyland can be on the pricier side. To save money and time, consume a hearty meal before visiting the theme park or purchasing meal coupons.

Duration of visit

Half a day allows you to experience popular attractions. A full day gives you ample time to finish all the rides. Multiple days allow Disney aficionados to explore every inch of the park. The type of pass to get depends on this, so decide wisely.

Tickets for sale

Standard, 2-day fun package, priority special and even fast passes. Hong Kong Disneyland has a myriad of different passes for everyone. Choose the one that best suits your needs. Before we explore each of Hong Kong Disneyland’s 7 different themed areas, here are some rapid-fire information you may require to plan your trip to Hong Kong Disneyland.

There is a cross-boundary shuttle bus to Hong Kong Disneyland in addition to the MTR, buses or taxi.

Staff(or cast members as they are referred to in Disneyland) can speak English in addition to Mandarin and Cantonese.

Without further ado, let’s jump straight into what Hong Kong Disneyland has to offer!

Introducing Main Street U.S.A

The buildings of Main Street U.S.A in Hong Kong Disneyland are identical to the architecture of Anaheim, a city in California but with information unique to its Hong Kong location. With vibes similar to small-town America from the years 1890-1910, Main Street U.S.A serves as Hong Kong Disneyland’s main entrance. However, there are Chinese aspects mixed in as well, with Plaza Inn being the first Chinese restaurant here. Inspired by the legendary heroine Mulan, the restaurant even offers 19 th century Chinese table service. If Chinese cuisine is not for you, Market House Bakery and Corner Café are also splendid choices. Not far from the entrance is a grass area whereby character greetings are usually held but lines can be long.

Like all other Disneyland theme parks, the Emporium is also located here. Selling the popular plushies Duffy, Tsum Tsums and Ufufy, the Emporium is where to go for your souvenirs. While there aren’t many rides here, Main Street U.S.A is still perfect for photos with amazing backgrounds. Furthermore, the new Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique has been opened in the Royal Princess Garden, offering kids the chance to dress up as their favourite Disney prince or princess.  Not only will they look more adorable, but it also enhances the magical experience at Hong Kong Disneyland.

Adventures in Adventureland

For a thrilling time, try Adventureland. Hong Kong Disneyland’s Adventureland is the largest among all other Disney parks and is home to Tarzan’s Treehouse, an exciting walk-through styled after the 1999 film Tarzan. For the braver of hearts, take on the “Jungle River Cruise”(a cross-park staple) whereby a fearless captain will guide you into the heart of hidden regions filled with exotic creatures. Just like Main Street U.S.A, character meet and greet sessions are also held here at Karibuni Marketplace. It is also no surprise that fresh fruits are sold here and the Chocolate Banana Dippers are a huge hit. For those with children, Liki Tikis is a great spot to rest and cool off.

While at Adventureland, be sure not to miss the “Festival of Lion King” show. Stroll down memory lane, basking in the nostalgia and reminiscing about those childhood days as you listen to timeless classics like “The Lion sleeps tonight”. Be sure to open your eyes though, as the stellar showmanship coupled with colorful costumes are a feast for the eyes. For the younger visitors, the new atmospheric stage show “Moana: a Homecoming Celebration” is worthy of praise.

Visiting Fantasyland

Hong Kong Disneyland’s Fantasyland is most well-received with kids. The rides are within close proximity of each other, making it easy to try different attractions at Fantasyland. Be sure to visit “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” a dark ride that transports you to the Hundred Acre Wood alongside Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and the rest of the friendly animals. We also strongly recommend visiting “Mickey’s Philhar Magic” a mesmerizing 4D show that takes you flying on the magic carpet. However, the most enchanted place must be the “Golden Mickeys” at Disney’s Storybook theatre. For a 25 minute musical drama, ‘Golden Mickeys’ will have you glued to your seat with stunning theatricals and real-life effects.

There is also Fantasy Gardens where you can take photos with Disney characters. On-site photographers will also sell professional photos, but fret not, as they will also take photos using your camera. For selfie-enthusiasts, the Fairy Tale Forest and Sleeping Beauty Castle are perfect backdrops for that ever crucial photo for social media. If you’re hungry the nearby Royal Banquet Hall has 4 stations: Grill, Japanese, Guangdong and International.

Excitement of Tomorrowland

After waking up from a fantasy, it is time to face a brand new day – enter Tomorrowland! With exhilarating rides that will keep your adrenaline pumping, Hong Kong Disneyland’s Tomorrowland is not for the faint of heart. “Iron Man Experience” is a relatively new but popular attraction. Exclusive to Hong Kong Disneyland, the mind-blowing ride features several prominent Hong Kong buildings. With state-of-the-art flight simulators, 3-D projection, surround sound and crazy effects, it will feel as though you are at the forefront of the battle against the evil Hydra. “Space Mountain” is also another iconic ride at Hong Kong Disneyland that fans love. What sets “space Mountain” apart is the fact that the ride occurs in pitch black, making it extremely intoxicating. You also get a good laugh at the end when you see your scrunched up face during the ride being sold as a souvenir.

For Marvel Fanatics, “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle!” is also a new ride at Tomorrowland. Taking the place of “Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters”, the new ride will have you shooting at targets to achieve a high-score. If all the excitement has gotten you hungry, Starlight Diner has the best Burgers and finger food in the park.

Feel small at Toy Story Land

Hong Kong Disneyland’s Toy Story land is themed after – you guessed it, Toy Story. The lovable Toy Story franchise has been with us for many years, with the 4 th and final film coming out on 21 June 2019. With such an amazing history, it is no wonder why Toy Story Land is so popular. Using bamboos to act as giant blades of grass and enlarged characters from the franchise, it is now your turn to experience what characters in the film go through.

The “RC Racer”, a Viking ship equivalent is an admirable ride, but “Toy Soldier Parachute Drop” takes the cake in Toy Story Land. Before boarding “Toy Soldier Parachute Drop”, you will be required to leave your belongings in a designated area. However, if you have neck strap on your smart device or a well-secured go-pro you may be able to capture the breath-taking scenery provided the weather is clear.

It should be noted that there are no restaurants catering food in Toy Story Land, so if your stomach is growling, you’ll have to purchase something from the snack cart. With a drinks and snacks menu that rotates periodically, you can definitely find something you enjoy here.

Hong Kong Disneyland’s Grizzly Gulch is an imaginary abandoned mining town forgotten amidst the mountains and woods. Set to be founded in 8 August 1888 where prospectors hoped to discover gold, you can see the influence of Chinese culture here. Believed to be the luckiest of numbers, ‘8’ is pronounced similarly to fortune in Chinese, hence its believed to be extremely fortuitous. With Grizzly Gulch being one of the smaller themed areas, exploring this archaic town shouldn’t take too long.

“Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars” is the only ride in Grizzly Gulch. A hybrid between Big Thunder Mountain Railroad(in many other Disneyland parks) and the Animal Kingdom’s Expedition Everest, this ride is here to impress. Shifting from a high(but manageable) forward velocity to backwards in mere seconds makes this ride both impressive and enjoyable. With a cool backstory and take-off to boot, “Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars” is a must-go ride. Not to mention its relatively short queue times. Be sure to exploit this fact and visit both in the day and night to experience different views.

Like Toy Story Land, there are no restaurants available so you’ll have to make do with the snack outlet present. The bright side is that there is also a popcorn cart here.

Marvelous mysteries await at Mystic Point

Mystic Point is the latest addition to Hong Kong Disneyland and is exclusive to only Hong Kong. Living in Mystic Manor is Lord Henry Mystic, exploring the dense, uncharted rain forest shrouded in mysterious forces and ghostly events. If you would like to meet the enigmatic Lord, join in the queue at “Mystic Manor”.

Story-telling aside, “Mystic Manor” is the most well-received ride in Hong Kong Disneyland, albeit being the only ride in Mystic Point. Sort of a re-skinned version of a Haunted House, the ride puts a twist to it by following a different concept. Chock full of high tech special effects to immerse riders, “Mystic Manor” won’t disappoint. But before you even visit Mystic Manor, prime yourself by walking through the Garden of Wonders with its perspective-morphing art installations and marvel at Lord Henry Mystic’s magical artefacts. Explorer’s Club Restaurant, the best Hong Kong Disneyland restaurant is also located here with all the food on the international menu being halal. Nice!

As per customs, a dazzling display of fireworks at Sleeping Beauty Castle marks the closing of Hong Kong Disneyland. The majority of visitors will stay till the end of the impressive show, resulting in a massive horde. We highly recommend taking time prior to the fireworks to seek out prime vantage points, especially if you have children. Otherwise, they may have to be held up to even catch a glimpse of the fireworks. While waiting, it will also be good to apply some insect repellent as pests appear at night.

Lastly, as a final tip, try to leave a few minutes before the end of the fireworks display, or you will inevitably be stuck in a crazed dash with everyone else trying to leave Hong Kong Disneyland.

You can take the Tung Chung Line (orange) or the Airport Express Line (green) to Sunny Bay Station, where you can transfer to the Disneyland Resort Line (pink) . Although self-driving offers greater flexibility and convenience, I advise against it due to the challenges of finding parking spots and driving on the opposite side of the road, which is unfamiliar to most individuals.

Hong Kong- Disneyland essay

A joint venture between the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and the Walt Disney Company Hong Kong Disneyland reached a major milestone on Sept. 24th: workers topped off Sleeping Beauty Castle, the park’s centerpiece, placing the uppermost turret on the structure’s highest tower. The castle emblem symbolizes the immersive world that guests enter inside every Disneyland around the world. Now, Hong Kong has its own Sleeping Beauty Castle. Of course, the creation of such a kind of entertainment complex gives birth to the whole range of questions and problems connected with its development.

The big question after they build it, of course, is how many will come. The SAR’s economic-benefit model is based on the park’s drawing 5. 6 million visitors in its first year of operations, with that number rising to 10 million annually after about 15 years. And that may be a very reachable goal. According to Walt Disney Parks and Resorts President Jay Rasulo, Hong Kong Disneyland will serve as an important gateway for bringing the magic of Disney to families across Asia. Disney’s new park, in fact, is specifically aimed at a single huge market: Asia, the world’s most populous region.

A major step in that marketing strategy is planning the cuisine that the park will offer. With much of Asian culture centering around meals, the menu that Disney selects will surely be broad. Disney and other companies, they say, will create an estimated 18,000 new jobs by the time the park opens. And total job creation will grow to 36,000 when Hong Kong Disneyland reaches full build-out. Critics, though, point out that most of those jobs are low-skill, low-pay positions. Even so, the SAR estimates that the project over a 40-year span will give Hong Kong’s economy an overall boost of $19 billion.

Most of that payoff will come from Hong Kong companies’ profits, plus income from the wave of newly created jobs. In addition, the SAR government will get back about $513 million of Phase I land costs through subordinated shares in the joint venture. Five thousand temporary jobs were already in place at the beginning of the building of the park. Five hundred of those positions were for the first “cast members” — Disney-speak for park employees. By the time Hong Kong Disneyland opened, it was to have 5,000 cast members.

Nevertheless, despite many positive factors that are caused by the appearance of Hong Kong Disneyland, Disney is going to face some major challenges as it tries to make its latest park a success. The first Magic Kingdom in China officially opened on Monday, Sept. 12, but even before then, critics were having a field day. In the weeks before its official debut, the park was open to visitors for what Disney called “rehearsal days,” and the Hong Kong newspapers were filled with complaints about the food, the lines, and the attractions. Also, there’s the matter of size.

Disney executives and officials from Hong Kong don’t want to admit this, but the fact is that Hong Kong Disneyland is small. It’s just 306 acres and has just three “lands” — Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, and Adventureland. The park was only in Phase One and there were plenty of reclaimed land at the site to accommodate more. But that was not going to stop visitors to Hong Kong Disneyland from feeling a bit under-whelmed. Not only is Hong Kong Disneyland smaller than the Magic Kingdoms in the U. S. , France, and Japan, it’s also missing some of Disney’s most famous rides.

At the opening ceremony, a choir sang the Disney theme song, “It’s a Small World,” but Hong Kong Disneyland doesn’t have the Small World ride. Hong Kong also doesn’t have the Matterhorn roller coaster ride, the Peter Pan ride, and many other Fantasyland favorites. Experts in the Chinese tradition of “feng shui” -the belief that harmonious energy and good fortune can be achieved by the correct positioning of furniture and other objects -were put on the payroll. On the advice of “feng shui” masters, the park faces the water with mountains in the back. The “feng shui” experts even picked the opening date of the park-September 12.

Park officials also tweaked the layout to conform with “feng shui” principles. They recommended “no fire” zones in restaurant kitchens -with an eye to keeping the five elements of metal, water, wood, fire and earth in balance – and water fountains. A giant fountain near the park entrance features Mickey Mouse surfing on a stream of water spouting from a whale. Statues of Donald Duck and Minnie Mouse stand nearby. As to the Chinese traditions at all, Robert Thompson, a professor of popular culture at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York says (Holson 2005: n. p.

): “It used to be Disney was exported on its own terms. But in the late 20th and early 21st century, America’s cultural imperialism was tested. Now, instead of being the Ugly Americans, which some foreigners used to find charming, we have to take off our shoes or belch after a meal. ” It is quite reasonable as the Chinese traditions will be both customary for Asian visitors and exotic for foreigners. As to the sea park in the same zone, Economics Research Associates was already retained by the Ocean Park to provide an economic assessment of a major redevelopment of Ocean Park in Hong Kong.

Ocean Park is facing increasing competition from Hong Kong Disneyland as well as regional parks in Southern China. ERA’s analysis includes market and financial assessment of the theme park, hotels and related retail entertainment complex of the next 50 years of Disney theme park history. Hong Kong Disneyland is officially trilingual: English and two types of Chinese, Mandarin and Cantonese. But “officially” and “actually” are two different things. At one of the live shows, the Golden Mickeys, the songs are in English but the narration is in Cantonese only.

At the Lion King show, the performers stick mostly to English, with a few words of Cantonese thrown in. Neither show features any Mandarin, although Disney hopes to attract millions of tourists from mainland China, where Mandarin is the most popular version of Chinese. Disneyland execs need to figure out how to make the park fully trilingual. There’s not much that Disney can do about another problem: the weather. Hong Kong in the summer is hot and muggy. It probably would have made for better headlines if Disney had waited till the weather cools off in November and December before opening the park.

Even worse, over the past few days, visibility has been terrible as the air-pollution index has been heading into dangerous territory. No doubt millions of tourists from China won’t mind, since they’re used to cities that are much worse. But dirty skies over Sleeping Beauty’s Castle are not the image that Disney wants to present to visitors venturing to its latest Magic Kingdom. Regarding the environment factor, opposition groups who have accused Disney of restricting union rights and lacking environmental awareness have held a protest concert.

They want people to know that Disney is no dream-world. It brings many problems for our environment, labour relations, economy and culture. For example, the problem with the shark fin is present here. Hong Kong has refused to sign any international conservation treaty that opposes the trade in shark fin. Shark fin soup is legal in Hong Kong but the official Disney policy, found on its Web site, states the company will work to identify issues that may not yet be identified in the law, but could result in adverse environmental effects.

The Hong Kong government has been trying to clean things up by, among other things, forcing all taxis to switch from diesel to cleaner-burning liquefied natural gas. That has helped, but Hong Kong won’t make significant progress until polluters across the border in Guangdong province clean up their act. Guangdong officials have promised to take action, but it will probably be years before there’s any noticeable improvement. Of course, Hong Kong Disney Land isn’t some kind of chemical plant or military complex. So, it is no way to speak about some really grave consequences.

Besides, it promises to bring a considerable financial profit for the region. But to make a general conclusion, it must be said Hong Kong Disney Land is able to bring certain negative influences to the whole social and natural environment of the area: -additional environment pollution, usage of some kind of rare animals species, etc; -the whole structure of the new park itself which doesn’t correspond to the classical Disney park: small dimensions, a shortage in a range of attractions appropriate for Disney original park;

-demographic or linguistic problem as the official and factual situation with languages in Hong Kong are two different things; -introduction of “feng shui” is a strong point for the park but it is no way to forget that the objects of the park must be located not only according to “feng shui” but to the general safety rules as well (for example, fire safety); -powerful development of Hong Kong Disneyland may and already causes negative influences to another entertainment zones of the area which are forced to survive within the conditions of strong competitionThe negative factors above must be reconsidered by the authorities in order to make the Hong Kong area more perfect.

In addition, we changed the HK population growth rate to 0%, the rate of inflation to -1% (1% deflation), the tourism growth rate to 3.3%, and the post-2024 cash flow growth rate to -2%. The 3.3% tourism growth rate is the rate recently projected by the Hong Kong Tourist Association for the 2005-2020 period. The 6.48% rate that we used for our best estimate was the historical rate. The 3.3% rate is a reflection of the fact that tourists have lost interest in Hong Kong since the British gave in back to China. Nonetheless, we think that HK Disneyland will result in at least average tourism growth for Hong Kong. Also, we believe that the park probably would shutdown in 2024 in the worst state. This paper will analyze Hong Kong Disneyland that was built y Disney in conjunction with the Hong Kong government. The local culture of the people of Hong Kong and how it is related to the operation of business especially the tourism industry, which Disneyland will fall under, will be closely examined. The author chose Hong Kong Disneyland, a theme park built and operated by a new-joint venture, between the Government of Hong Kong and the Walt Disney Company.

In this report the author uses Disney as the subject of the paper as it is a new business venture in the tourism industry in Hong Kong. Disney started its business in Hong Kong since September 12th 2005 therefore evaluations and analysis are still in their early stages. This report will give a brief background of Disney and will then go on to analyze the va

rious methods for strategic analysis to examine the culture. The paper will use some cultural theories in order to provide a comprehensive background as to the cross cultural awareness of the company with the culture of a state.

Hong Kong Disneyland (HKD) is among five such theme parks located on a reclaimed area in Penny’s Bay, Lantau Island. According to Miller (2007), it was opened on September 12, 2005, considered a good date by Chinese calendar for opening a new business. Hong Kong Disneyland was built and operated by a new-joint venture company, the Hong Kong International Theme Parks Ltd (HKITP), as formed by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government which owned 57% and the Walt Disney Company owning 43% according to Miller (2007). According to Hills and Welford (2006), although Disney investe

$316 million and the Hong Kong government invested $2.9 billion, Disney has no ownership of the land.

Disney tried to avoid the culture clash that was experienced when Disneyland Resort Paris was opened in France by incorporating local cultural elements in HKD. It was projected that the theme park would to attract between five to six million visitors in the year it opened who mainly comprised of Hong Kong locals and tourists from mainland China. It is predicted by the World Tourism Organization that in the next 15 years, HKD will become one of the world’s biggest tourist destinations, Hills (2006). Plans are already in place to expand the park in a next few years. With the government of Hong Kong owning a majority of Disney’s stock, any change in the political scene in Hong Kong will have a significant effect on the business. Economically any change whether micro or macro will affect businesses as well as HKD significantly.

Disney went international in order to generate some form of importance for its organization, and did this by expanding to Tokyo and Paris as well as to Hong Kong. According to Daniels, Radebaugh & Sullivan (2011), companies increase their knowledge about products and services and how best they can generate and distribute them to their customers, by bringing people of varying backgrounds and experiences together.

The beginning of HKD has been rough. Disney made attempts to incorporate elements of the local culture into HKD by serving predominantly Chinese food in the restaurants at the park. According to Coker (2009), “An organization can achieve legendary service excellence in one part of the world, yet struggle to meet customer expectations when

the same formula (content) is applied in a different country (context)”. When Disney decided to go to Hong Kong, the struggle was to extend US’s exceptional service thriving principle to the new expectations of the Chinese and Asian culture. Disney

According to Porter the following are the four determinants of national competitive advantage: firm strategy, structure, and rivalry: factor conditions; demand conditions; and related and supporting industries. It was found out that the company strategy is to relay advertise that its theme park is an answer to the dream of being in a magical land. The demand conditions can be inferred from the need of the people to be more offered with good services such as transportation. The Supporting industries of the corporation are the selling of Disney products, which could serve as souvenirs. The factor conditions are the well trained and accommodating staff that can Cantonese and English. The Hong Kong government may not have any arrow that would interrelate with all the factors however, such is positioned in order to have a clears view on the performance of the business, taken into consideration that the Hong Kong government owned majority of the stocks.

Strategic analysis using resource audit identifies the resources available to a business. Some of the resources of the company may be owned and other resources can be obtained from joint ventures or from supplier arrangements with other business. On December of 1999 the Hong Kong Government, the Walt Disney Company, and the Hong Kong International Theme Parks Limited signed a project agreements on implementation of Hong

Kong Disneyland. Disney is partly owned by the government of Hong Kong, which is holding the biggest part of the stocks, representing 57% while Walt Disney has only 43%. The government formulated the financing structure in order to inform the public on how the Government, as Disney majority stockholder, will allocate its resources for its funding with the establishment of Disney.

According to Edgar Online (2004), Walt Disney revenues from advance theme park ticket sales are recognized when the tickets are used. Revenues from corporate sponsors at the theme parks are generally recognized over the period of the applicable agreements commencing with the opening of the related attraction. The parks, resorts and other property are carried at historical cost. Thus, it can be inferred that the extent of the value of its assets also derived on its long-term value. It does not only depend on the income on its current situation. Furthermore, Disney values the need to preserve its assets in order to prolong the benefit it can derived from such assets.

Under this category the writer will take into consideration the strength and reputation of the management team and the overall business and the strength of relationships with existing investors and lenders. There are series of criticisms in 2005 that put a bad input on the reputation of Disney. Also the food poisoning incident that happened in 2005 followed by the misunderstanding of preventing the entry, in order to conduct an investigation of the incident, of the representative of the Food and environmental Hygiene Department.

However, according to Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary Henry Tang, “Hong Kong is becoming an important financial hub in all of Asia surpassing

Tokyo, offering a diversity of experience may it be shopping, eating, or business. Thus, it can be inferred that Disney has opened opportunities to Hong Kong making it one of the hot spot for tourism and business opportunities. Furthermore, to prevent the happening of the friction that happened in Disneyland Resort Paris, Disney has taken into consideration to make it more into the local culture. The New York Times reported that the company even consulted experts for the date pf its opening, and the proper positioning and location of Disney.

Using this analysis the writer will be able to examine the main competitors serving the same target market. Upon analysis, the only big competition of Disney is Ocean Park. Ocean Park has suffered tremendously after Disney was established. There are people clamor to see the magical land promised. The price is relatively low than what Disney offers. The major competitive threat it poses is the attraction it offers to the public. It offers live entertainment, audience interaction with the animals for the price half of what Disney offers. Hence, Disney must see to it that it intensify its campaign on offering magical land. Disney must not put into the perception of the public that really dreams are high in its worth.

According to Lim (2007), there are questions regarding the attraction’ future funding were sparked off by a recent statement issued by the Disney head office to financial regulators, which said that an improved performance in its theme park division was partially offset by lower guest spending and theme park attendance at HK Disney. Hence, it can be inferred that the target income was not targeted putting

the name of the Hong Kong government under scrutiny.

Before Disney was to be established the Hong Kong government has give the public that it can obtain revenue from it however due to its low acceptance from the market, there has been a doubt as to the capacity of Disney. It must not disregard that, as the Hong Kong government owns majority of its stocks it must operate for the progress of its business and not to its decline. Several steps can be taken in order to fully meet its expectations.

According to McNamara (2008), organizational culture is the personality of an organization. Culture comprised of the assumptions, values, norms, and tangible signs of organization members and their behaviors. Corporate culture can be looked at as a system. It may include feedbacks based on assumptions. The organizational culture of Disney is addressing the need to be more family-oriented. Its organizational culture is appropriate to its current strategy however, it is necessary for Disney to see it that it really conducts its business towards such orientation. Furthermore, Disney is considered a place of magical dreams. It must not only focused itself to offer magical stuff but also it must offer real service and entertainment in order to make the consumers that realization and dream are not two distant aspect of life.

The fact that the national culture of Hong Kong purely dwells into the fact that it is more traditional and it focus to the preservation of their culture. The author cannot see any negative effect of the national culture to the organizational culture of the company because of the fact that the government owns a part of its

stock. The only problem is that the company must give more focus to the fact that it must protect the integrity of its employees as such will be the basis of the way the company will be of help to the progress of the economy and the whole country itself.

It is therefore right to conclude that the key internal strengths of the organization are its Name, the quality of its service, and the programs that it offers to the public. Disney name carry with it the fact it is known internationally also which offers high quality of service and products. Disney must take good of its name in order not to put a bad perception as to its capacity to be called as part of a world-renowned company. Another thing is the quality of its services. Its services are known to be of the best quality, taken into consideration first the needs of its consumers. Last is the program it offers to the public. It offers quality entertainment from quality entertainment, which makes consumers keep coming back.

On the other hand, the following are the weaknesses of Disney (arranged as to its importance): the price of tickets, the small space it occupied as compared to other Walt Disney theme parks and the fact that it is so magical. As stated the price of Disney’s ticket is expensive in order for it fully accepted by its consumers. As the there has been a decline in world economy there would be consumers who will not be able to afford going at there park. It also has small space; hence sometimes it tends to have overcrowding and non-acceptance of

some ticket holders, which may give Disney a negative remark.

Last weakness is the fact that it offers too much magic hence some consumer prefer to go to other place offering a more educational and realistic programs. Although it is the perception of the author that being magical is not bad, however Disney must offer its service in a magical relatively to a lower price in order to give consumers those magical dreams is within their reach less expenses.
