Relationships, especially with family members, are the most important aspects of handling change. I have experienced life-changing events that turned me into a better person.

One such event occurred in my childhood, while the other occurred in adolescence. In both cases, my family was there to support and help me go through the tough times. Looking back at the influence of these events, I am always glad that my family was with me in overcoming the challenges. I am a better person because my family stood beside me and gave me strength and support in moments of weakness and helplessness.

The first event that had a remarkable impact on my life was the loss of a dear friend. This event changed my world and made me a better person. It taught me how to appreciate friends, family, and relationships. In childhood, I had a cousin who was my best friend.

Our friendship was so deep that we usually spent holidays and weekends visiting each other’s families. To my family, she was like one of the members. I was like one of her family members, too. We used to spend a lot of time together, playing, studying, traveling, and doing many other fun activities.

One day, while returning home from school, she got knocked down by a motorcyclist speeding off, trying to escape from a police officer. She was hit from behind and knocked her head on a large stone on the side of the road upon landing on the ground. When I received the news of the accident, I was devastated.

The morning after the accident, I visited her in the hospital and received the sad news that she was in a coma after suffering severe brain damage. I lost my appetite, could not sleep for weeks, and spent several nights crying and wishing she would be fine. She was in the hospital for six months. During that period, I became stressed and lost weight.

I missed school for many days, thus affecting my academics. Even though my family was also affected, the effect was greater on me because of our long-time friendship. Every day I woke up expecting to hear good news from my parents of her miraculous recovery, but that did not happen. As I became more depressed, I started to avoid social gatherings and experienced difficulty sleeping.

One morning, just after breakfast, we received news that she had passed away. At that moment, a hot flush of blood flowed into my head, and I fainted. The long period of endless waiting had come to an end. That morning was one of the lowest moments. I was rushed to the hospital, and the doctors said I had collapsed due to sudden shock. The grieving period was excruciating.

However, my family stood by me and offered consolation. My family members provided emotional and physical support and helped me overcome the incident. The event had severe emotional effects. My mum spent most of her time comforting me. I could cope with the situation because my family understood what I was going through, were patient, listened to me, and offered psychological help.

My parents were not angry at me for missing school. They allowed me to stay home until I was ready to go back. It took four months of grieving to get over the death of my cousin and best friend. This incident changed my life and brought me closer to my family. I now appreciate relationships and more. As a result, I am more loving, caring, compassionate, and appreciative of the people in my life.

The other defining moment that changed me involved a disagreement with my parents regarding joining high school. When the time came for me to enter high school, I was not prepared and wanted to stay home for a year before joining. My parents were concerned that I would lose a year of schooling since, at my age, I was not ready for a job. They feared I would have nothing to do for an entire year.

The reasons for delaying my entry to high school were fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. I was not ready to enter a stage of life where I was expected to be responsible for my life and actions. I refused to talk to my parents and other family members because I felt that they were imposing their principles on me. The truth is that I was afraid to enter a phase that would require me to be responsible for my decisions and actions.

I avoided my parents and always ensured they never got a chance to question me. My decision changed when my dad confronted me. Our discussion focused on the reasons that were informing my decision. At first, I was unwilling to tell my dad the truth, but as the debate progressed, I had no choice but to open up to him. I was afraid that he would be disappointed with me.

However, he assured me that it was normal to experience fear and anxiety, especially when making a life-changing decision. He narrated a story about how he had reacted the same way when his dad asked him to move out of their family house to find a place to live after joining college. Throughout the entire experience, my family was very understanding.

They helped me to overcome the fear and anxiety of embracing responsibilities. That incident changed my life, attitudes, and perspectives regarding life. My family has always supported me during tough times. That incident improved my relationship with my family and introduced me to adulthood. Whenever I face a challenge, I discuss it openly with my family because of the awareness that they are always ready and willing to listen and offer assistance. 

My elder brother introduced me to high school life and offered numerous tips on adjusting to the new environment. My family is my greatest source of joy and happiness. This incident taught me responsibility, trust, humility, and the importance of family. The aforementioned events changed my life tremendously because they played a crucial role in molding me into a responsible, caring, and compassionate person.

Changes in Life: Positive and Negative Effects Essay

One of the invariable realities in life is that we are every in a state of change. These changes may be positive or negative but regardless of their nature, they are a fundamental part of our lives and it is important that we brace ourselves for them. In my life, I have had many changes; some of which have been inconsequential and other which have literally marked a turning point in my life.

In this paper, I shall narrate one of the significant changes in my life so as to highlight the fact that our perception of the change does at times determine whether the experience will be enjoyable or shall yield to discomfort and insecurity.

The particularly significant change in my life came about as a result of the announcement by my parents that we would be moving from Texas to New Mexico. What made this change so significant to me was that we had been living in the same neighborhood for as long as I could remember and the moving process felt like literally been uprooted.

As such, the change represented being taken away from what I was familiar with and loved to being placed in a foreign place which held a lot of uncertainty for me. My initial reaction was that of shock and distress at the prospect of what life in the new place would hold.

While I did enjoy visiting new places, I had never pictured myself moving from my home town on a permanent basis. In a bid to resist the change, I tried to reason my parents out of their decision. This was a futile attempt mostly because I had no solid reasons as to my opposition to our moving.

When it was finally clear to me that we were going to move regardless of my stance, I resigned myself to my fate and I recall wallowing in self pity as I expressed my predicament to my friends. However, one of my friends who happened to have come from New Mexico remarked that the place was actually enjoyable and held many a fascinating scenes for people.

In addition, he commented on the lovely neighborhoods and the tight knit communities that were there. His statements opened my eyes to the possibilities that the change in my life presented. I had been too indulged in the uncertainty and discomfort that would arise from the move that I had failed to consider the numerous possibilities that the change presented.

In my blindness, I had set out to avoid the change and failed to recognize the fascinating new possibilities. From this point on, I took up a more positive outlook and actually looked forward to the move.

Transitions in life are inevitable. We eventually graduate from school and move into the workforce. We might get married, switch jobs or careers, have a major illness, break up, get divorced , retire, or have somebody we love pass away. We move into different life stages as we transition from adolescence into adulthood or from a student to an employee to a retiree. These major crossroads in life involve moving from one state or situation to another, and they are almost always difficult on a psychological and emotional level because they put us in unfamiliar territory. This internal psychological journey has to be taken to assimilate and adjust to the implications of major change—addressing the emotional toll of leaving behind what once was (what is ending) to moving on to something new.

Transitions that happen to us involuntarily (such as a major illness or death) may involve walking the emotional stages of grief , from denial through acceptance. These are especially difficult and may require counseling and a lot of inner work. My focus here is on those life changes that you voluntarily undertake; those things you can anticipate and plan for.

As I started writing this, it was Vietnam Veterans Day, which reminded me of the sacrifices that military personnel and their spouses and families make to protect our country and the transitions they continuously make. I grew up in a military family with my father as a U.S. Air Force officer, and we made constant moves from country to country and base to base. The most important skills I’ve learned—how to make new friends, be disciplined, and respect authority—all come from this military upbringing. Military service impacts not only the service member but also their spouses and children. I have a ton of respect for all of the 1.4 million active military personnel who serve our country. But no matter how successful a military career is, it will usually result in a transition back to civilian life, to a new job or home, new social connections, new wounds or injuries to manage, or a completely new way of living. There are 18 million living retirees from the military who have all made this important transition. 1

This is why I was so intrigued when I read about the launch of the Transition Program from the United Service Organizations (USO). The USO is a nonprofit charitable organization chartered by Congress with the mission of “strengthening the well-being of the people serving in America’s military and their families.” 3

I didn’t know much about the program, so to learn more I met with the USO chief operating officer, Christopher Plamp, a retired Air Force Colonel, pilot, and decorated war veteran. Lisa Elswick, the vice president of Transition Programs at the USO, also helped me understand how the USO can help improve the social and financial well-being of the military men and women through their programs. 2

Many readers probably know of the USO based on their entertainment activities, with celebrities such as Bob Hope famously helping to entertain troops and maintain morale. Or, you might have seen the lounges in an airport, which are there to help provide a safe space in between flights. But the USO is now taking a proactive effort through the Transition Program to improve “connectedness, well-being, and mental health of the troops,” Plamp told me. The USO is doing this by offering active duty, Reserve, National Guard, and military spouses professional development services throughout the duration of military service as well as in preparation for life post-military. This includes helping to prepare individuals for new careers after the service, becoming financially ready, and improving social well-being. Elswick says that the program has five main pillars of readiness: employment, education , finances, wellness, and mentorship. Through transition specialists located around the world, they are helping to meet virtually and in-person with service members who are concerned about their future transition and how to get better prepared. I love all aspects of this program.

Tips for Resilience and Smooth Transitions

Although this program is quite specialized to the needs of the military, we can learn a lot from it about how to approach career and life transitions. The focus has to be on building resiliency to move from one situation to another smoothly. So, what insights can we gain from a choice perspective on how to navigate life’s crossroads? Here are seven tips:

  • Take some time to pause and reflect on what is happening. Spend some time focusing on yourself—bringing awareness of your emotions and feelings. It's OK to remember what "once was" and to be sad, uncomfortable, even unhappy. But then shift your focus on what "could be." Imagine different possibilities. Open yourself up to the possibilities and positive changes.
  • Anticipated transitions involve careful planning to improve certainty and reduce anxiety . Start planning early.
  • Readiness for change requires time to allow individuals to accept and process the change as well as to get technically and emotionally prepared. If you are preparing for a transition, you will need to invest time.
  • Set clear intentions about what you are looking for, what is important to you, and where you hope to end up. Intentions help build mental awareness.
  • For spouses and families, remain cohesive. Stick together, because transitions can destroy relationships. When anticipating change, work as a family.
  • Stop procrastinating! It’s easy to keep putting this off, but the earlier you can address it, the lower the tension and anxiety.
  • Finally, stay positive. Optimism can help lessen the anxiety and stress you are going through.

Major life transitions stir up emotions including uncertainty and unfamiliarity. They can create such excessive anxiety that the success of the transition itself is often jeopardized. However, with dedication to being intentional, proactive planning, and consistent follow-through, you can navigate transitions such as finding a new career, spouse, or life path and emerge as the best version of yourself. I am positive you can create smooth transitions for yourself this year.

When I Became a Birder, Almost Everything Else Fell Into Place

Last September, I drove to a protected wetland near my home in Oakland, Calif., walked to the end of a pier and started looking at birds. Throughout the summer, I was breaking in my first pair of binoculars, a Sibley field guide and the Merlin song-identification app, but always while hiking or walking the dog. On that pier, for the first time, I had gone somewhere solely to watch birds.

In some birding circles, people say that anyone who looks at birds is a birder — a kind, inclusive sentiment that overlooks the forces that create and shape subcultures. Anyone can dance, but not everyone would identify as a dancer, because the term suggests, if not skill, then at least effort and intent. Similarly, I’ve cared about birds and other animals for my entire life, and I’ve written about them throughout my two decades as a science writer, but I mark the moment when I specifically chose to devote time and energy to them as the moment I became a birder.

Since then, my birder derangement syndrome has progressed at an alarming pace. Seven months ago, I was still seeing very common birds for the first time. Since then, I’ve seen 452 species, including 337 in the United States, and 307 this year alone. I can reliably identify a few dozen species by ear. I can tell apart greater and lesser yellowlegs, house and purple finches, Cooper’s and sharp-shinned hawks. (Don’t talk to me about gulls; I’m working on the gulls.) I keep abreast of eBird’s rare bird alerts and have spent many days — some glorious, others frustrating — looking for said rare birds. I know what it means to dip, to twitch, to pish . I’ve gone owling.

I didn’t start from scratch. A career spent writing about nature gave me enough avian biology and taxonomy to roughly know the habitats and silhouettes of the major groups. Journalism taught me how to familiarize myself with unfamiliar territory very quickly. I crowdsourced tips on the social media platform Bluesky . I went out with experienced birders to learn how they move through a landscape and what cues they attend to.

I studied up on birds that are famously difficult to identify so that when I first saw them in the field, I had an inkling of what they were without having to check a field guide. I used the many tools now available to novices: EBird shows where other birders go and reveals how different species navigate space and time; Merlin is best known as an identification app but is secretly an incredible encyclopedia; Birding Quiz lets you practice identifying species based on fleeting glances at bad angles.

This all sounds rather extra, and birding is often defined by its excesses. At its worst, it becomes an empty process of collection that turns living things into abstract numbers on meaningless lists. But even that style of birding is harder without knowledge. To find the birds, you have to know them. And in the process of knowing them, much else falls into place.

Birding has tripled the time I spend outdoors. It has pushed me to explore Oakland in ways I never would have: Amazing hot spots lurk within industrial areas, sewage treatment plants and random residential parks. It has proved more meditative than meditation. While birding, I seem impervious to heat, cold, hunger and thirst. My senses focus resolutely on the present, and the usual hubbub in my head becomes quiet. When I spot a species for the first time — a lifer — I course with adrenaline while being utterly serene.

I also feel a much deeper connection to the natural world, which I have long written about but always remained slightly distant from. I knew that the loggerhead shrike — a small but ferocious songbird — impales the bodies of its prey on spikes. I’ve now seen one doing that with my own eyes. I know where to find the shrikes and what they sound like. Countless fragments of unrooted trivia that rattled around my brain are now grounded in place, time and experience.

When I step out my door in the morning, I take an aural census of the neighborhood, tuning in to the chatter of creatures that were always there and that I might have previously overlooked. The passing of the seasons feels more granular, marked by the arrival and disappearance of particular species instead of much slower changes in day length, temperature and greenery. I find myself noticing small shifts in the weather and small differences in habitat. I think about the tides.

So much more of the natural world feels close and accessible now. When I started birding, I remember thinking that I’d never see most of the species in my field guide. Sure, backyard birds like robins and western bluebirds would be easy, but not black skimmers or peregrine falcons or loggerhead shrikes. I had internalized the idea of nature as distant and remote — the province of nature documentaries and far-flung vacations. But in the past six months, I’ve seen soaring golden eagles, heard duetting great horned owls, watched dancing sandhill cranes and marveled at diving Pacific loons, all within an hour of my house. “I’ll never see that” has turned into “Where can I find that?”

Of course, having the time to bird is an immense privilege. As a freelancer, I have total control over my hours and my ability to get out in the field. “Are you a retiree?” a fellow birder recently asked me. “You’re birding like a retiree.” I laughed, but the comment spoke to the idea that things like birding are what you do when you’re not working, not being productive.

I reject that. These recent years have taught me that I’m less when I’m not actively looking after myself, that I have value to my world and my community beyond ceaseless production and that pursuits like birding that foster joy, wonder and connection to place are not sidebars to a fulfilled life but their essence.

It’s easy to think of birding as an escape from reality. Instead, I see it as immersion in the true reality. I don’t need to know who the main characters are on social media and what everyone is saying about them, when I can instead spend an hour trying to find a rare sparrow. It’s very clear to me which of those two activities is the more ridiculous. It’s not the one with the sparrow.

More of those sparrows are imminent. I’m about to witness my first spring migration as warblers and other delights pass through the Bay Area. Birds I’ve seen only in drab grays are about to don their spectacular breeding plumages. Familiar species are about to burst out in new tunes that I’ll have to learn. I have my first lazuli bunting to see, my first blue grosbeak to find, my first least terns to photograph. I can’t wait.

Rhodes Scholar Isabella Sullivan credits student-athlete experience at Army West Point for life-changing opportunities

Second-highest-ranking cadet reflects on development of leadership, resilience.

Before Isabella Sullivan could imagine penning an essay on how she wanted to change the world, she had to transform herself and learn what she was capable of. 

Her experience as a volleyball student-athlete at Army West Point was the perfect conduit to this development and realization, leading to incredible experiences and honors. Most notably, Sullivan was selected as one of 32 American Rhodes Scholars in the 2024 class. Rhodes Scholarships provide all expenses for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford. 

As part of the rigorous selection process, applicants must write a 750-word personal statement on their life story and how they want to impact the world through the program. Sullivan's statement focused on her passion to converge two fields of study — early childhood education and public policy — to help de-escalate the rise in polarization around diversity issues. 

"I think education is a huge asset," Sullivan said. "It's so hard to try to make this intervention later in life. It's really lofty, but Rhodes is supposed to be lofty. I'm really hopeful to be able to contribute in some way to this de-escalation of this polarized conflict that we see in so many global communities today."

Sullivan contributed in similar ways to the Army West Point community, with a focus on holistic development of her fellow cadets and teammates. She developed a cultural competency training program that was ultimately adopted into Cadet Basic Training for the class of 2025. As a two-year volleyball captain, Sullivan also facilitated team character education sessions and led the development of the team values: grace, grit and growth.

None of those contributions, Sullivan emphasized, compare with what Army West Point provided her, especially as a student-athlete. 

"Being a student-athlete at West Point has had a heavy hand on fostering me into the person I am today, the leader I want to be and the values I hold," said Sullivan, whose father was an Army West Point graduate and whose mother also served in the Army. "Playing a Division I sport here at West Point, being a part of the athletics program is so cool because so much of what you learn as an athlete … really translates over into being in the Army, like the value of being on a team, how to take care of your teammates, how attentive you are, this pursuit of excellence, the resilience required." 

Sullivan credits her volleyball team's support for the honors and accomplishments she's achieved at Army West Point.

Sullivan's examples of learned resilience at Army West Point are endless. One that stands out, however, is cadet leadership development training, which serves as a capstone exercise for cadets and can include field missions that last more than a week. 

"It's very physically demanding," she said. "Obviously as a college athlete, I feel like I'm in pretty good shape, but that was the most I pushed myself physically, and that was a huge moment of physical resilience."

On the volleyball side, Sullivan said she developed resilience through her role as a captain. She was appointed a team captain the spring of her sophomore year, which was her first real leadership opportunity at Army West Point. The experience presented a unique challenge in that Sullivan saw little playing time. Sullivan said navigating the process taught her a lot about the holistic nature of leadership. 

"I was trying to step into this new leadership role, and I was very young and thinking, 'How do I gain people's respect? What does my authority come from, if it's not coming from this very traditional sense of playing time?'" Sullivan recalled thinking. "Having to lead through a difficult position like that, gaining my teammates' respect, their trust when I was never really leading on the court … that was really difficult at first, but it honestly ended up being so cool and rewarding." 

Sullivan credited her volleyball coach, Alma Kovaci Lee, for helping her gain a more mature perspective as a leader and a student-athlete. Sullivan specifically recalled a period during her sophomore year when she struggled with her playing time, and Lee helped her view her contributions through a wider lens. 

"The way she just helped me reframe what it means to be a successful athlete was so pivotal for me," Sullivan said. "I learned a lot about how to find value in myself outside of the amount of minutes that I played, and all the ways that someone can contribute to a team. Obviously, everybody wants to contribute to the team in a game. But you're just as important if you contribute to the team in practice, if you're a leader from the sidelines, if you lead by example and not just through words. There's just so many different ways that you can impact a program, and I think she really helped me see that so early on.

"Because I got that advice from her and that one-on-one mentorship, it really helped me separate who I was as an athlete and who I am as a student, as a partner, as a daughter … to be the best performer I can be in all those different areas." 

This mentality paid off in the form of several opportunities. 

In the summer of 2023, Sullivan served as the regimental commander for Cadet Basic Training, overseeing cadet cadre and the training and development of 1,250 new cadets as they entered Army West Point. She also provided leadership through a historic flood that devastated West Point, ensuring the safety of all personnel under her command. Currently, she serves as the deputy brigade commander, the second-highest-ranking cadet in the corps .

Again, Sullivan credited these leadership opportunities to what she learned as a volleyball captain. 

"It was a huge learning curve, but it just taught me so much. And I think it set me up so well to be able to accept the leadership positions that I had later on in the Corps of Cadets," she said. "It's just really cool to see that what I was learning and practicing as a team captain who was in charge of 20 women in this very athletics-dominated space translated when I was in charge of 1,250 new cadets in cadet cadre over basic training this past summer." 

As she approaches the end of her time as a cadet, Sullivan said it's hard to believe some of the accomplishments and experiences she's enjoyed She remembers early on admiring cadets like Tyrese Bender, a Rhodes Scholar and former track and field athlete, and Simone Askew, the first African American female to be selected as a Rhodes Scholar from Army West Point. Sullivan never thought something like that was possible for her, though. She's learned that self-limitations at Army West Point can be quickly erased. 

"The support we receive here at West Point is just kind of immense. You're surrounded by people who not only pursue excellence themselves, but they also really encourage you to do the same, and they want to pull you along with them," she said. "My teammates are absolutely amazing. Without their support, I wouldn't really be able to have the success that I do today."

Isabella Sullivan currently serves as the deputy brigade commander, the second-highest-ranking cadet in the corps.

David Baron can pinpoint the first time he got addicted to chasing total solar eclipses, when the moon completely covers up the sun. It was 1998 and he was on the Caribbean island of Aruba. "It changed my life. It was the most spectacular thing I'd ever seen," he says.

Baron, author of the 2017 book American Eclipse: A Nation's Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World , wants others to witness its majesty too. On April 8, millions of people across North America will get that chance — a total solar eclipse will appear in the sky. Baron promises it will be a surreal, otherworldly experience. "It's like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

Baron, who is a former NPR science reporter, talks to Life Kit about what to expect when viewing a total solar eclipse, including the sensations you may feel and the strange lighting effects in the sky. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What does it feel like to experience a total solar eclipse — those few precious minutes when the moon completely covers up the sun?

It is beautiful and absolutely magnificent. It comes on all of a sudden. As soon as the moon blocks the last rays of the sun, you're plunged into this weird twilight in the middle of the day. You look up and the blue sky has been torn away. On any given day, the blue sky overhead acts as a screen that keeps us from seeing what's in space. And suddenly that's gone. So you can look into the middle of the solar system and see the sun and the planets together.

Can you tell me about the sounds and the emotions you're feeling?

A total solar eclipse is so much more than something you just see with your eyes. It's something you experience with your whole body. [With the drop in sunlight], birds will be going crazy. Crickets may be chirping. If you're around other people, they're going to be screaming and crying [with all their emotions from seeing the eclipse]. The air temperature drops because the sunlight suddenly turns off. And you're immersed in the moon's shadow. It doesn't feel real.

In your 2017 Ted Talk , you said you felt like your eyesight was failing in the moments before totality. Can you go into that a little more?

The lighting effects are very weird. Before you get to the total eclipse, you have a progressive partial eclipse as the moon slowly covers the sun. So over the course of an hour [or so], the sunlight will be very slowly dimming. It's as if you're in a room in a house and someone is very slowly turning down the dimmer switch. For most of that time your eyes are adjusting and you don't notice it. But then there's a point at which the light's getting so dim that your eyes can't adjust, and weird things happen. Your eyes are less able to see color. It's as if the landscape is losing its color. Also there's an effect where the shadows get very strange.

You see these crescents on the ground.

There are two things that happen. One is if you look under a tree, the spaces between leaves or branches will act as pinhole projectors. So you'll see tiny little crescents everywhere. But there's another effect. As the sun goes from this big orb in the sky to something much smaller, shadows grow sharper. As you're nearing the total eclipse, if you have the sun behind you and you look at your shadow on the ground, you might see individual hairs on your head. It's just very odd.

Some people might say that seeing the partial eclipse is just as good. They don't need to go to the path of totality.

A partial solar eclipse is a very interesting experience. If you're in an area where you see a deep partial eclipse, the sun will become a crescent like the moon. You can only look at it with eye protection. Don't look at it with the naked eye . The light can get eerie. It's fun, but it is not a thousandth as good as a total eclipse.

A total eclipse is a fundamentally different experience, because it's only when the moon completely blocks the sun that you can actually take off the eclipse glasses and look with the naked eye at the sun.

And you will see a sun you've never seen before. That bright surface is gone. What you're actually looking at is the sun's outer atmosphere, the solar corona. It's the most dazzling sight in the heavens. It's this beautiful textured thing. It looks sort of like a wreath or a crown made out of tinsel or strands of silk. It shimmers in space. The shape is constantly changing. And you will only see that if you're in the path of the total eclipse.

So looking at a partial eclipse is not the same?

It is not at all the same. Drive those few miles. Get into the path of totality.

This is really your chance to see a total eclipse. The next one isn't happening across the U.S. for another 20 years.

The next significant total solar eclipse in the United States won't be until 2045. That one will go from California to Florida and will cross my home state of Colorado. I've got it on my calendar.
