NY Bar Exam

What Subjects Are Tested On The NY Bar Exam?

If you want to pass the New York bar exam, you need a plan for success. A great way to design your study strategy is to learn what subjects are tested on the NY bar exam. That way, you can tailor your study to the more highly tested areas. Read on to learn what those subjects are, so you can hit the ground running with your bar prep.

What Are the Different Sections on the New York Bar Exam?

New York administers the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). The UBE has three sections: the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), the Multistate Performance Test (MPT) and the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE).

On the MBE, you’ll have six hours to answer 200 multiple-choice questions on seven subjects: contracts and sales, constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, civil procedure, evidence, real property, and torts. There are countless reasons why studying with real MBE questions will help you ultimately prepare for the bar exam. Here are 5 reasons why using real MBE questions matter . For those interested in accessing past MBE questions to practice with, check out our   MBE Question Bank.

When you get to the essay section, you’ll have three hours to answer six questions. Those essays may test the same topics on the MBE, or these additional areas of the law: business associations, conflict of laws, family law, trusts and estates, and the uniform commercial code (secured transactions).

What Subjects Are Highly Tested on the New York Bar?

If you attempt to learn every last thing about each area of the law that could be tested, you’re in for a bad time. Instead, be strategic and target your study to the more highly tested subjects.

We’ve looked through the data on the most recent NY bar exam back through 2011 to find that civil procedure is most highly tested (14 full essays and one combined with another subject). Contracts is in second place with 11 full essays, while agency and partnership, secured transactions, and corporations and LLCs all shared third place.

Here is a full list of each subject tested on the MEE and when it was last tested: MEE Frequency Chart . Just as with the MEE, it’s important to be strategic with how you spend your time for the MBE portion as well. Here is an MBE Frequency Chart plotting the most frequently tested subjects on the national exam.

Knowing what subjects are highly tested on the NY bar exam is a great way to focus your studies. Keep in mind that within each subject, some topics are also more commonly tested than others.
