Definition of Professional Development

Professional development encompasses a wide range of activities designed to enhance an individual’s skills, knowledge, and effectiveness in their chosen profession.

The concept is succinctly defined by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) as:

“…actions that (1) improve an individual’s knowledge, skills, and/or competencies, (2) are acquired by such individuals – teachers, principals or other education personnel – to support better professional practice, and (3) are expected to have an impact on positive educational outcomes.” ( OECD, 2019 ).

We generally engage in professional development in order to adapt to technological advancements, achieve career progression, and enhance our job performance.

  • Leadership Training Course : This refers to engaging in activities that enhance your ability to manage, guide, motivate, and support your team. Leadership training typically involves training in positive communication skills , inclusivity, and mentorship. A leadership training course might be useful for someone in management roles or those aspiring to move into such positions.
  • Project Management Training : One example of this is getting your Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. These sorts of certifications help people to learn to manage large and complex projects – with multiple people along the workflow – from inception to completion. Skills that you could develop in this sort of training include planning abilities, risk management skills, quality control (especially important as you scale the project), and team coordination.
  • Certification Courses : Certifications are often embraced by workplaces because there’s a recognized accreditation at the end of the PD. In my experience, it’s the conversations in the hallways that are most valuable about conferences more than anything else. The benefit of a workshop is often that it has a very clear goal or skillset that’s being worked on, and they often facilitate active learning opportunities (where you ‘learn through doing’).

Their great benefit is anyone can access this PD no matter where they are in the world. This makes them great for people who work in rural and remote areas. I’ve been surprised in my time at the number of colleagues in other institutions who reach out via email to me and simply ask to chat, hoping that it would lead to collaborations, partnerships, and mutually beneficial opportunities. The more you do this, the more doors will open for you in the future.
  • Mastermind Groups: Mastermind groups are usually small, trusting groups of professionals who want to share ideas and brainstorm on a regular basis in non-judgemental spaces. It involves meeting with like-minded professionals to discuss challenges, successes, and strategies. They offer a collaborative environment for problem-solving and creative thinking .
  • Reading Industry Publications : Keeping up with the latest news, trends, and research in your field can be extremely beneficial. This is a simple, low-risk PD idea, that you can implement right away – get a subscription to an industry magazine (it’s a good one if you need last-minute evidence that you’re interested in PD before your performance review!).
  • Shadowing : Shadowing involves observing another professional in your field in order to obtain new insights into how to go about your job. It can be surprising the amount of small tips and tricks you can obtain by simply following someone through a process that you do regularly, to see how they have different shortcuts and methods that you hadn’t thought about.
  • Conducting Research : Spending time to conduct research on open databases like Google Scholar can lead to a deeper understanding of topics in your field, reveal flaws on your own practices, and open your eyes to differing approaches.
  • Learning New Software : With the constant development of new technologies, and especially with the rapid rise of AI tech, employees need time to sit down and work with (dare I say, play with) new software that could be implemented into our workflows to improve quality or speed up processes.
  • Joining Professional Organizations : Professional organizations – ideally ones that are ‘official’ and recognized as the peak bodies – can provide you with access to resources, networking events, and advancement opportunities that are exclusive to members.
  • Public Speaking and Presentation Skills Training : Sometimes, putting your hand up to participate in a public speaking event or to give a presentation may help you to achieve professional development. In these contexts, you’ll want to select something to research or focus on, then develop the depth of knowledge that you’ll be able to present interesting facts, data, and insights to others. This can also help to position you as a thought leader.
  • Volunteering in Your Field : Volunteering opportunities can give you new experiences and new insights that help you develop soft skills like empathy, while developing a deeper understanding of other people’s lived experiences. For example, a CEO who volunteers to help low-level staff in need can suddenly get insights into the day-to-day struggles his staff experience.

  • Cultural Competency Training : This is becoming increasingly important in global businesses and diverse work environments. In fact, most large workplaces now mandate this sort of training, which many of us will know by another name – diversity and inclusion training .
  • Career Coaching: Getting a career coach was something that was really useful for me. Mine was specifically a business coach, who helped me through not only the regular bottlenecks in business, but also the mindset issues faced in my role as a business owner.
  • Podcasts: I had to include this one because I do this every single day, and it’s my own informal PD that has kept me abreast of the latest trends in my industry. I go for a 45-minute walk, put on a podcast, and listen to what the movers and shakers are doing in the industry. Case studies, insights, and tips-and-tricks work to inspire me and keep me motivated, all while I’m getting some exercise!

Providing people with career and professional development opportunities is an effective way of employee motivation. According to Stone et al. (2008), autonomous motivation has a great positive impact on employee satisfaction, retention, performance, and motivation. The below report will examine what the most successful ways of motivating and empowering workers are in an international organization.

The thesis statement the author would like to examine is as follows:

Employees who are provided with a personal professional development plan are more likely to participate in process improvement projects within the organization, and will feel a stronger connection with the company than those who are not given the opportunity to pursue their professional goals within the organization.

Literature Review and Research Development

Several authors talk about empowering employees through providing them with professional development opportunities. The Cornerstone project (2010) created an overview on the impact of employee empowerment. According to the authors, an empowered employee would be provided with the opportunity to do what they do best every day, while the workplace encourages their development, talks about their progress, and provides them with growth and learning opportunities.

The benefits of empowering employees through training and lifelong learning projects are evident for employees, but they can also provide several advantages for companies. The Cornerstone project (2010) lists some of the major competitive advantages gained by companies encouraging professional development of employees. First, a workplace where employees are empowered is more engaged. Quoting related statistics, the authors state that “companies with higher-than-average employee engagement also had 27 percent higher profits, 50 percent higher sales and 50 percent higher customer loyalty” (Cornerstone, 2010, p. 5). Further, studies show that workplaces where employees are encouraged to grow and learn have a higher overall performance and productivity level. Finally, at empowered workplaces, employees’ personal goals are more aligned with the organization’s vision and mission, and companies achieve a 144 percent increase in their ability to plan for future talent needs.

From the theoretical point of view, several frameworks can be applied to investigate the relationship between employee development and engagement. The Self-Determination Theory (SDT) states that people are more encouraged to do better if they feel like their values and goals are understood by the organization (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Therefore, instead of using the “carrot and stick” type of motivation, companies should start listening to employees, understanding their preferences, values, and aspirations, in order to support them in personal and professional growth. This approach can also lead to intrinsic motivation, described as a type of engagement between the company and the employee where “employees work for passion, pleasure, and interest. In contrast, integrated regulation occurs when people fully endorse the importance of the work even though they may not find it interesting” (Stone et al., 2008).

Goodall et al. (2005)  evaluated the impact of continuing professional development in schools on performance and motivation. Based on the results of the large scale survey carried out in the United Kingdom, the authors created some important recommendations for professionals creating professional development plans on an individual basis. First of all, evaluation of performance and training needs is crucial to delivering the most appropriate training schedule and materials. The impact of learning on motivation and job performance should also be measured by employers. Finally, the authors found that there was a need for differentiating learning and development programs, based on roles, personal needs, and background.

Literature Evaluation and Suggestions

Based on the above review of literature, it is evident that creating personal professional development plans for employees would have a positive impact on their motivation and engagement level. It is recommended by the sources analyzed that it is important to match the training provided to the needs of individuals, and listen to workers. Therefore, the best practices of creating a professional development plan at work should focus on collaboration, discussion, monitoring, and evaluation.

Several frameworks for motivating employees through training and career development opportunities have been created by researchers and HR professionals in the past few years. Zahra et al. This results in a better team performance, better alignment of goals, and a greater level of understanding among team members. Managers are a significant part of an organisation as they have a primary responsibility of ensuring that all the goals and objectives of the organisation are well met so that the performance of the firm increases in the market. As per the investigation on professional development essay, it is noted that in order to become a successful manager, there are a number of skills that must be possessed by an individual so that they are able to manage an entire workforce and guide them in their duties. I would like to address my perception in this professional development essay that a manager should possess planning skills, communication, and decision-making skills, problem-solving skills, and motivating skills. As per Divleli and Ergun (2015), planning is one of the most essential duties of a manager they are responsible to allocate duties to the employees based on their skills and knowledge so that the tasks are completed successfully and the organisation is able to meet its goals. Managers are required to interact and communicate with employees, make them understand their duties, guide them with their tasks and help them in their problems. Therefore having excellent communication is one of the most important skills to be a successful manager. In addition, it is observed that as the business environment changes many times managers are required to make a decision that will benefit the business and assist in its growth. In order to make a beneficial and reasonable decision that decision making the skill of the manager should be appropriate. A business encounters many challenges and problems while operating in the competitive market active problem-solving skills help in finding creative and innovative solutions for problems, therefore managers are required to have excellent problem-solving skills. As stated by Kiruja and Mukuru (2018), it is also noted in this professional development essay that managers should possess, motivating skills, employees in business may feel low due to increased competition or work pressure, therefore, it is the responsibility of the managers to motivate and encourage the employees to remain positive and active towards their duties so that enhanced outcomes can be gained.

As per my self-reflection, I can analyse that my soft skills such as communication skill is excellent and I am confident at speaking with my colleagues and friends. In addition, I am quite creative as I participate in most of the problem-solving activities and try to work on my creative knowledge. I am always trying to think of unique and innovative ideas so I am able to enhance my creativity. However, some of the my soft skills such as negotiation skills, and other hard skills such as business knowledge and organisational skills are quite inappropriate and therefore, lack of these significant skills will reduce my chances of capturing the job opportunity and therefore I am planning to work on improving these skills. I need to improve my lacking skills so that I am suitable for the position.

In order to improve my negotiation skill, I will take up a class in which I can work and learn about negotiation, the activities of the class will help me in practising negotiation ad will improve my knowledge in this area. I will also keep practising this at home and with peers so that I can improve this skill as it is necessary. In order to work on my business knowledge, I will enrol in a business course which will allow me to gain an understanding and also expose me to the business world. The course will also allow me to understand the challenge in difficulties that are experienced by a business I will be able to understand the working environment and it will benefit me in my career development. Business knowledge is a vital skill and joining courses to improve my skill is essential. Lastly, I will have to increase my organisational skills and therefore in order to do that I will take up an internship in a good repute organisation so that I am able to gain practical knowledge regarding the ways a business operates. I will be able to experience the challenges and learn from the situation. Internship helps in gaining knowledge and also improves our skills, we are able to understand work pressure and the way we need to behave and the attitudes that help us in a workplace.

Conclusion In this professional development essay, we can conclude that professionally develops is important as it allows us to work on our skill and professional knowledge so that we are capable and competent. I analysed that significance and importance of skill development and the way skills help in gaining attractive career opportunities. Skills are significant as they help in understanding the capabilities of an individual and based on its job and employment offers are provided. I have discussed the skills of a manager and the ways these skill sets are used by a manager in order to carry out their roles in a business. In addition, I have conducted a self-analysis regarding the skills that are lacking in me as compared to skills that are required for the job I desire to achieve. Ultimately, clearly defined goals allow you to determine what's working and what's not, and can provide direction for when it’s time to shake things up. Studies also show that this level of exact action planning helps you achieve your goals.

2. Work Toward Different Types of Goals 

Bucket your goals into three different types: predictable goals, stretch goals, and inspiring, shoot-for-the-moon type goals. 

  • Predictable: “The predictable goal is something you already know how to do, perhaps have done it before, and have a strategy for achieving it,” Song says. 
  • Stretch: Stretch, or “possible” goals, are something you think is within reach, but you may not yet know exactly how to achieve it, you haven't done it before and possibly never seen anyone else do it either.  
  • Moonshot: “The inspiring, moonshot goal is the crazy potential goal that is like hitting the bullseye on a dart board. You know it's difficult, you can't guarantee it, you're not attached to it, but it's fun to imagine what if. You'd be so excited!” 

This multi-layered approach creates a balanced approach to personal and professional growth. Predictable goals provide stability and direction, stretch goals encourage continuous improvement and innovation, while inspiring goals fuel ambition and drive transformative change.

3. Track Progress for Both Hard Goals and Soft Skills 

Shift your mindset from “set it and forget” to “set it and track it.” For example, if your goal is to hit $XYZ revenue within a certain timeframe, keep checking in with your progress. This allows you to make adjustments as needed to hit your target. 

You can do this with soft skills such as improving communication or leveling up leadership skills . Even with soft skills, though, Dr. Elliott says you’ll find more success when defining what these things mean to you and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs). 

“KPIs don’t always need to include numbers,” he says. “If your goal is to be a more confident communicator, for instance, you might start to track the feelings you have after important meetings at work.”

4. Invest in Continuing Education 

Continuing education is an excellent way to work toward your professional development goals. This might look like professional workshops and conferences, working toward new certifications within your industry, mentorship and coaching , and/or industry-specific training programs.

Sharing goals with others—including family, friends, and colleagues—fosters accountability, support, and collaboration. It also provides room for helpful feedback, diverse perspectives , and collective problem-solving. 

6. Network With Intention 

Similarly, make big strides when it comes to networking. The more people you know, the more connections you have, the more advice you’ll get, and the more opportunities you’ll see. By connecting with professionals in your field, you gain insights, mentorship, and access to resources that can propel your career forward. 

What’s more, networking helps you stay on top of industry trends, discover job openings (sometimes before others even know about them), and provides opportunity for meaningful referrals and encouragement throughout your professional journey. You can network at conferences, in the office, via platforms like LinkedIn, and local events. 

7. Focus Your Attention on the Process 

Hitting marks is great, but you ultimately want to focus more attention on the process versus obsessing over outcomes. 

“As you set career goals, you want to be sure that you’re focusing your time and effort on what’s in your control,” Dr. Elliott notes. “You might be tempted to set a result-focused goal, but this can be a recipe for disappointment, since outcomes are so often out of our hands, especially when it comes to professional development and growth.”

Here’s another good reason to track your goals: It lets you know when it’s time to celebrate! Taking time to reward yourself for wins for progress made is a key part of cultivating a winner’s mindset, Song says. Research has also found that it helps spark creativity and engagement among colleagues.

You’ll experience natural ebbs and flows along your career development journey. Dips are completely normal and aren’t a reason to abandon ship. Rather, they’re a time to practice self-compassion, gently assess, and find new strength. Sometimes, feeling stuck or unmotivated is caused by pursuing the wrong goal, or going about it the wrong way. 

“There will always be ups and downs, but being grateful for it all and seeing ‘failures’ as great lessons is a major key to success,” Berghoff says. “Embracing the journey and process is the best way to stay the course in your goals long-term and continue winning.”

This means the task of teachers goes beyond the usual activity of making a lesson plan based on the assigned curriculum, and talking in front of the class. As a result, a teacher must be adequately prepared through career development.

How Professional Development for Teachers works

Learning is a lifelong process for teachers. Most regions make it a requirement for teachers to undergo some training on specific issues during certain periods of their career; mostly during the vacation period.

Teachers from the kindergarten up to the 12 th grade normally undergo various training during the year to develop their career. This training is part of career development. Career development for teachers are normally done through seminars, workshops, and training courses.

During the training, which normally takes place during the school holidays, teachers are introduced to the latest trends, and strategies in education. They are also introduced to various methods, and techniques to combat classroom challenges (All Education Schools, 2010).

The idea behind career development for teachers is to improve the teachers’ knowledge to help them serve students better. The occasion gives teachers the ability to focus on what they ought to fine tune during classroom practice. Before a teacher commences his or her career, he or she is given a certificate of operations.

Depending on the state, the law requires that the license be renewed every year. Before the license is renewed, the authority has to ratify if the teacher has undergone some career development process. For instance, in Kansas State, a teacher operates under the original license for about five years.

During the five-year period, the teacher is required to undergo various courses as part of professional development. After five years, the license is renewed based on the professional development the teacher has gone through. Provisions are made for vocational learning and workshops for teachers.

Apart from license renewal, teachers undergo professional development because of incentives involved. For instance, in Kansas State, a teacher is promoted after the first five years of service.

The promotion is based on the performance in examination and career development done during the period (Kansas State Department of Education, 2010).

Career development forms an important event in the teachers’ career. Given the dynamic nature of teaching strategies and curriculum design, career development is undertaken by teachers to update themselves with the changes taking place in education sector.

Professional development enables teachers to achieve certain skills to deal with emerging situations. Professional development gives teachers the chance to set their objectives or goals. Through a schedule for seminars and vocational training planned per year, a teacher can set goals to achieve certain objectives.

For instance, in Kansas State, teachers get a promotional certificate after taking some professional development courses for five years (Kansas State Department of Education, 2010).

This means the teacher has the opportunity to set goals for his or her career development whereby he or she aims to achieve a desired certificate after a certain period.

Professional development gives teachers a chance to overcome and manage past classroom problems. For instance, if the classroom has been experiencing extreme cases of failures, a teacher can correct such issues through professional development.

Professional development involves expansion and growth. The teacher gets the necessary skills to overcome an existing problem, and moves forward with new methods.

Career development is useful for fresh teachers. It gives them confidence by equipping them with skills to be better teachers. Professional development generally improves the performance of students, thereby boosting teachers’ confidence.

Teacher’s Professional Development to Cater for Students with Special Needs

Professional development for teachers is essential for students with special needs. Although students in the same class are assumed to be in the same category of cognitive abilities, there are always a few cases with special needs.

As a result, a teacher is better placed to handle students with special needs if he or she has undergone the process of professional development. There are various special courses, seminars, and workshops organized for teachers to handle children with special development.

One common professional development involves workshops for math solution in an inclusive classroom. In most cases, many students fear mathematics. As a result, a math teacher is given an opportunity to help such student through professional development workshops.

How papers with doctored images can affect scientific reviews

An unpleasant surprise awaited scientists who surveyed 1,035 journal articles to prepare a review about a test commonly carried out on rats. Credit: Oleksandr Bushko/Alamy

It was in just the second article of more than 1,000 that Otto Kalliokoski was screening that he spotted what he calls a “Photoshop masterpiece”.

The paper showed images from western blots — a technique used to analyse protein composition — for two samples. But Kalliokoski, an animal behaviourist at the University of Copenhagen, found that the images were identical down to the pixel, which he says is clearly not supposed to happen.

Image manipulation in scientific studies is a known and widespread problem. All the same, Kalliokoski and his colleagues were startled to come across more than 100 studies with questionable images while compiling a systematic review about a widely used test of laboratory rats’ moods. After publishing the review 1 in January, the researchers released a preprint 2 documenting the troubling studies that they uncovered and how these affected the results of their review. The preprint, posted on bioRxiv in February, has not yet been peer reviewed.

Their work “clearly highlights [that falsified images] are impacting our consolidated knowledge base”, says Alexandra Bannach-Brown, a systematic-review methodologist at the Berlin Institute of Health who was not involved with either the review or the preprint. Systematic reviews , which summarize and interpret the literature on a particular topic, are a key component of that base. With an explosion of scientific literature, “it’s impossible for a single person to keep up with reading every new paper that comes out in their field”, Bannach-Brown says. And that means that upholding the quality of systematic reviews is ever more important.

Pile-up of problems

Kalliokoski’s systematic review examined the reliability of a test designed to assess reward-seeking in rats under stress. A reduced interest in a reward is assumed to be a proxy symptom of depression, and the test is widely used during the development of antidepressant drugs . The team identified an initial pool of 1,035 eligible papers; 588 contained images.

By the time he’d skimmed five papers, Kalliokoski had already found a second one with troubling images. Not sure what to do, he bookmarked the suspicious studies and went ahead with collating papers for the review. As the questionable papers kept piling up, he and his colleagues decided to deploy Imagetwin , an AI-based software tool that flags problems such as duplicated images and ones that have been stretched or rotated. Either Imagetwin or the authors’ visual scrutiny flagged 112 — almost 20% — of the 588 image-containing papers.

“That is actually a lot,” says Elizabeth Bik , a microbiologist in San Francisco, California, who has investigated image-related misconduct and is now an independent scientific-integrity consultant. Whether image manipulation is the result of honest error or an intention to mislead, “it could undermine the findings of a study”, she says.

Small but detectable effect

For their final analysis, the authors examined all the papers that met their criteria for inclusion in their review. This batch, consisting of 132 studies, included 10 of the 112 that the team had flagged as having potentially doctored images.

Journals adopt AI to spot duplicated images in manuscripts

Analysis of these 10 studies alone assessed the test as 50% more effective at identifying depression-related symptoms than did a calculation based on the 122 studies without questionable images. These suspicious studies “do actually skew the results”, Kalliokoski says — although “not massively”, because overall variations in the data set mask the contribution from this small subset.

Examples from this study “cover pretty much all types of image problems”, Bik says, ranging from simple duplication to images that showed evidence of deliberate alteration. Using a scale that Bik developed to categorize the degree of image manipulation, the researchers found that most of the problematic images showed signs of tampering.

The researchers published their review in January in Translational Psychiatry without telling the journal that it was based in part on papers that included suspicious images. The journal’s publisher, Springer Nature, told Nature that it is investigating. (The Nature news team is editorially independent of its publisher, Springer Nature).

When they published their preprint the following month, the researchers included details of all the papers with suspicious images. They also flagged each study on Pubpeer, a website where scientists comment anonymously on papers . “My first allegiance is towards the [scientific] community,” Kalliokoski says, adding that putting the data out is the first step.

Bring reviews to life

The process of challenging a study’s integrity, giving its authors a chance to respond and seeking retraction for fraudulent studies can take years . One way to clear these muddied waters, says Bannach-Brown, is to publish ‘living’ systematic reviews , which are designed to be updated whenever papers get retracted or new research is added. She has helped to develop one such method of creating living reviews, called Systematic Online Living Evidence Summaries.

Systematic-review writers are also keen to see publishers integrate standardized ways to screen out dubious studies — rather than waiting until a study gets retracted .

Authors, publishers and editorial boards need to work together, Bannach-Brown says, to “catch some of these questionable research practices before they even make it to publication.”

Electric Motor Noise and Vibration Improved Method Based on Rotor Load 2024-01-5038

This article presents a method for improving electric motor noise and vibration analysis based on rotor load. The method first obtains two key parameters, namely the characteristics of the stator and rotor core material and the connection stiffness between the rotor skewed poles, through modal testing and simulation calibration of the stator and rotor. Subsequently, the electromagnetic simulation is used to calculate the torque fluctuation of each segment of the rotor skewed poles, which is used as input load for the structural simulation. The vibration of the suspension point and the radiation noise of the transmission housing are then calculated under the action of torque fluctuation. The study highlights the significant contribution of the rotor torsional mode to noise and vibration. Finally, by improving the torsional stiffness of the rotor and the distribution of skewed poles, the noise and vibration problems caused by torsional mode can be significantly improved, leading to improved electric motor NVH performance.
