Why choose cui.

COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), a leading Degree Awarding Institution of higher education in Pakistan, is among the Centers of Excellence of Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) www.comsats.org.

Established in 1998, CUI is one of the fast growing research - based institutions in Pakistan, with a wide range of academic programs (ranging from basic sciences to cutting edge emerging technologies) and a network of inter-disciplinary research centers making it an ideal place for higher studies leading to MS and PhD degrees.

Since its establishment, CUI has made multi-faceted growth in terms of campuses (currently it has eight fully functional campuses), number of students, faculty members, academic programs, research output, and public outreach, to accomplish its three-fold stated mission, i.e., Research and Discovery, Teaching and Learning, and Outreach and Public Service, which makes it a popular choice for undergraduate as well as graduate programs. Further, CUI is currently ranked at Number 03 position in General Universities of Pakistan, at Number 01 position in Computer Science and IT and has also been ranked Number 02 in Research Productivity in Pakistan as announced by Higher Education Commission (HEC Ranking 2015, issued in February 2016). Recently, CUI has also been ranked among top 250 Asian Universities as well.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019 includes more than 1,250 universities and COMSATS is only University from Pakistan ranked 600-800 in overall ranking. COMSATS is also ranked 401-500 in the 2019 THE Computer Science Subject Ranking and ranked 301-400 in the 2019 THE Engineering and Technology Subject Ranking.

Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is considered among the three most authentic and widely revered university rankings besides QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It is published by the Shanghai Ranking consultancy. Only four Pakistani universities made it to the ARWU 2018 Rankings, but each remained far away from the elusive top 500 club. The top ranked Pakistani university in the list was COMSATS University, placed in the 601-700 band of the ranking.

As per QS Universities ranking COMSATS was the second best Pakistani university on the list, claiming a place in the 401-450 band in the engineering and technology broad category. The university scored highly for the number of citations per paper and academic reputation.

During the last 15 years, CUI has witnessed a phenomenal growth to an extent that it would perhaps not be out of place to say that CUI has been one of the fastest growing educational institutions of the decade. All through these years, various external bodies have evaluated CUI and the quality of its programs, based on very stringent quality and professional standards. The most important independent entities and regulatory bodies evaluating CUI and its programs are the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), and the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Knowledge.

It is a matter of pride for the CUI that it has been able to record remarkable achievements in terms of ranking of its Engineering degree programs as well as research productivity of the faculty members.

The various rankings, year wise are listed below for the interest of CUI stakeholders.

In February 2016, University Rankings for the year 2015 were announced by HEC. CUI has been ranked at No.3 in the General Category, and at No. 6 in overall universities within Pakistan as ranked by HEC.

In May 2015, University Rankings for the year 2014 were announced by HEC. CUI has been ranked at No.2 in the General Category, and at No. 4 in overall universities within Pakistan as ranked by HE.

CUI earned yet another singular honor in the year 2015 to be first ever Pakistani Higher Education Institution to have successfully crossed the psychological barrier by producing high quality research publications totaling more than 1,000 in a single year. According to the Thomson-Reuters Web of knowledge database, CUI’s research publications amount to 1212. And according to the bibliometric data from Elsevier’s Scopus database, the number of research publications is 1307.

In May 2014, the CUI attained position in 201-250 range of top Asian Universities by QS Asian University Rankings. In these Asian University Rankings, 10 institutions from Pakistan including CUI are among top 300 in Asia. Click here for details.

In 2013, Higher Education Commission (HEC) announced Quality and Research based Rankings of Pakistani Higher Education Institutes where CUI has been ranked at number 4 in General Universities (Large) category among all 132 universities of Pakistan.

Besides, CUI earned an overall 3 stars rating out of a total of Five by QS. Click here for details.

Penn Admissions Blog

Today, the University of Pennsylvania announced admission decisions for Regular Decision applicants to the Class of 2028 across Penn's four undergraduate schools: the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Wharton School, and the School of Nursing. These remarkable students will comprise Penn's 272nd undergraduate class.

Penn received more than 65,000 applicants this year—the largest first-year applicant pool in its history—with students admitted through QuestBridge Match, Early Decision, and Regular Decision. This year’s admitted students represent one of the largest cohorts from the city of Philadelphia, along with students coming from 109 countries and all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Marshall Islands, and the military APO.

This year's admitted class embodies Penn's tradition of academic and personal excellence across many dimensions. Through their applications, students shared intellectual pursuits already underway and those they hope to undertake with Penn's faculty and with each other when they arrive in the fall. They also described how they contribute to their communities, whether through caring for family members, leading clubs, starting organizations, or acting as connectors among friends.

For the second time, as part of Penn's application process, every student also wrote a thank-you note to someone in their lives, sharing inspiring encounters, relationships, and observations that impacted them and filled them with gratitude.

Each of these students exemplifies a unique combination of academic excellence, determination, curiosity, and joy. The Penn community cannot wait for them to meet each other when they arrive in the fall. Hurrah, hurrah for the Class of 2028, and welcome to Penn!

I’ve worked in college admissions for over 30 years, and I focus on building bridges between what ‘has been’ and what ‘can be’ so that the whole process can become less complicated yet still effective for students to find their way into college.  I especially love meeting new students when they arrive each year because it’s so fun to match them to the stories and information that we know from their applications!

I love coffee, running, snacking all day, and laughing.  I also adore dogs.  I spend a lot of time with my nutty English Bulldog, Stella, and I can be very easily distracted by silly dog memes. My favorite location on Penn's campus is the entire stretch of Locust Walk, and I love authentic Philly cheesesteaks. You can reach me at [email protected] .

The 5,139 admitted students will bring with them a variety of lived experiences that will enrich the vitality and innovation of Cornell’s intellectual community.

Admitted Class of 2028 personifies Cornell’s founding principles

By susan kelley, cornell chronicle.

As an EMT in high school, Kimia Shahriyar had seen more than her share of overdoses. She wanted to attend a university where she could better understand the complex problem of addiction by studying health care, advocacy and policy. But Shahriyar found few universities offered that – until she met a Cornell alumna who touted the university’s interdisciplinary approach.

“I wanted to be in an environment where I could truly thrive with those who understand the intersections that I’m going for,” said Shahriyar, who will major in health care policy at the Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy. “This is exactly what I want to pursue with a group of people that I just can’t imagine not joining.”

A dual citizen of the U.S. and Iran, she’s also looking forward to participating in the Persian Students Organization. “I do hold my heritage and my culture very dearly,” Shahriyar said.

She is among the 5,139 students admitted to the Class of 2028. Regular decision students were notified March 28, the official notification date for the Ivy League.

The Class of 2028 is full of students who personify Cornell’s founding principles, said Lisa Nishii, vice provost for undergraduate education and interim vice provost for enrollment.

“The variety of lived experiences that these students bring with them will enrich the vitality and innovative nature of our intellectual community,” Nishii said. “I look forward to seeing how they work across boundaries to solve the challenges of tomorrow.”

Yanna Mei '28 is co-captain of her high school fencing team in Brooklyn and plans to continue to fence at Cornell.

They include Yanna Mei of Brooklyn, whose three-hour round-trip commute to high school sparked her interest in transportation. “It got me thinking that maybe I should try to fix it and make public transportation something that people talk about positively,” said Mei, who will major in urban and regional studies at the College of Architecture, Art and Planning (AAP). As the co-captain of her school’s fencing team, she is looking forward to continuing that sport at Cornell.

Mei is among the 16.5% of the admitted class who are first-generation students – the first in their families to go to college. In terms of geographic diversity, admitted students reside in 50 U.S. states plus Washington, D.C., Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico, as well as 93 countries. Based on citizenship, admitted students represent 107 countries outside the United States.

Levko Danyliv, a painter from Miami, Florida, was attracted to the interdisciplinary approach in AAP, where he’ll major in fine art. “You can pick any class to help reflect one’s art practice,” he said. And as a native speaker of Ukrainian, he is excited to join Cornell’s Ukrainian Club. “For Ukrainians to be represented in a student club is really awesome. I’m excited to meet all those people.”

Emma Bromley, a soccer player from Forest Hills, New York, was drawn to Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology, where she participated in a Young Birders event in summer 2023.

“The birding and ornithology opportunities at Cornell are unmatched by any other university,” said Bromley, who will major in environment and sustainability in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “The professors were very passionate about their interest in ornithology but also about helping students and getting them interested and involved.”

Emma Bromley ’28 of Forest Hills, shown here birding in the Rockaways, Queens, was drawn to Cornell's Lab of Ornithology.

This year, the admissions office added a new question to the Common Application. It asked applicants to explain how their life experiences as part of a community would inform their contributions to Cornell’s learning community devoted to “… any person … any study.”

The university’s ethos “really is our North Star,” said Pamela Tan, director of undergraduate admissions.

“My colleagues across the undergrad admissions community and I have worked really hard to reach talented students from across the United States and around the world, including those students who may have considered Cornell inaccessible,” she said. “And I really believe that the university is just going to be better as a result. These students will benefit from Cornell, and Cornell itself will benefit from the incredible range of experiences that these new students will bring to the Big Red community. It’s a vital part of who we are, what makes us special, and what makes us vibrant as a community. And that’s something that we think a lot about in the admission process.”

Austin McBride of New York City was drawn to the College of Human Ecology’s major in design and environmental analysis.

“Design is a way for me to utilize my creativity while also creating change in people’s lives; it’s just something that fascinates me so much,” McBride said.

She visited the Ithaca campus in October. “I just fell in love,” she said. “I saw the studios, and everyone was so kind. And I was like, ‘OK, this is the place for me.’”

Students have until May 1 to accept Cornell’s offer.

They can connect with staff and current students in myriad ways, including CUontheHill , a virtual community where admitted students can talk to Big Red Ambassadors and current students, learn about admitted student events, find other admitted students in their cities and potential roommates, make friends before Orientation, and find answers to frequently asked questions. Admitted students will be invited to join shortly after they get word of their acceptance.

Admitted students are also invited to visit campus during Cornell Days, April 13, 14 and 21. During this one-day visit option, admitted students and their families can connect with their college or school, tour campus and share a meal in one of the dining halls. Registration is required; more information about events for admitted students can be found at the university’s admitted student webpage .

Big Red Ambassador Paloma Galdo ’24 said although a lot of universities have a diverse body of students, Cornell is different.

“Not only are Cornell students from across the whole world, but they’re incredibly passionate about what they’re studying,” said Galdo, a dual major in psychology and biology in the College of Arts and Sciences. “They genuinely want to do something beyond Cornell that will really have a great impact on the community. I think that was really impressive. I found a lot of inspiration from people around me.”

Students who are unable to visit campus in person can take a self-guided campus tour and participate in virtual admitted student events available through CUontheHill. They can also use the Office of Undergraduate Admissions’ virtual visit resources .

For parents who have questions, a text line run by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions will be available from April 1 to May 1 during business hours, staffed by student ambassadors and admissions staff. Parents will receive information about the text line via email.
