·         Forty-five bottles will go into each uniform – with a potential of half a million bottles to be reused annually as part of the airline's commitment to address impacts beyond carbon and reduce waste

·         Over the course of the five-year uniform contract easyJet will be responsible for preventing 2,700,000 plastic bottles from ending up in land fill or in oceans

·         The high-tech material is made using renewable energy sources and has a 75% lower carbon footprint than traditional polyester

easyJet, Europe's leading airline, has announced today that it is introducing a new uniform for cabin crew and pilots, each made from around 45 recycled plastic bottles as part of its commitment to mitigate waste and search for innovative change beyond carbon reduction . Manufactured by Northern-Ireland based Tailored Image and created with unique high-tech material, the new uniform will be introduced into cabin crew circulation this month. The roll-out across the airline is estimated to prevent around half a million plastic bottles from ending up as plastic waste each year.

Not only does the fabric reduce plastic waste, but the high-tech material is made using renewable energy sources and has a 75% lower carbon footprint than traditional polyester.

The new fabric, adapted to the airline's current style, was first trialled last year for suitability in the cabin and flight deck environments. Compared to the non-recycled alternative, it is more abrasion-resistant. It also provides even more elasticity, a four-way stretch, improving fit and freedom of movement for enhanced comfort and durability. This development can lead to it being long-lasting for the wearer, reducing the need for more uniform items to be produced in the long term.

Beyond the new fabric, plastic has also been replaced in all clothing-related packaging in favour of recyclable and biodegradable materials: replacing plastic collar strays with recyclable cardboard ones, plastic shirt clips with metal shirt clips, non-recyclable white coated card with recyclable cardboard card and polypropylene outer shirt covers with biodegradable shirt covers.

easyJet has already taken steps to reduce plastic onboard as it continues to reduce the number of single-use plastic items used on its flights. The airline has already replaced many items with more sustainable alternatives, such as introducing a small plant-based bowl as a teabag holder, removing over 27 million individual items of plastic from our inflight retail operation in Financial Year 2020, and has never offered plastic straws. It also offers a 50p discount on hot drinks for customers who bring their reusable cup.

Tina Milton, Director of Cabin Services at easyJet, said:

"Climate change is an issue for all of us, and at easyJet, we are looking at all parts of our operation to see where we can reduce carbon emissions and reduce waste.

"We are excited to be debuting this new pilot and cabin crew uniform made from recycled plastic bottles and to introduce it for our pilots and cabin crew colleagues. We know that sustainability is an important issue for them and also for our customers.

"It is a priority for us to continue work on reducing our carbon footprint in the short term, coupled with long-term work to support the development of new technology, including zero-emission planes which aspire to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation radically. We continue to work with innovative technology partners Wright Electric and Airbus. Each of them has set out its ambitious timetables for bringing zero-emission aircraft into commercial service to become a reality.

"People have a choice in how they travel, and if people choose to fly with us, we want to be one of the best choices they can make."

Bernard Birt, Managing Director of Tailored Image, said:

"Our role as a bespoke uniform and corporate wear provider is to deliver innovative solutions for our clients, built around comfort and practicality for their wearers. The additional challenge with the easyJet project was to meet their exceptionally high standards in reducing environmental impact.

“By combining the expertise of our design and garment technology teams, we developed a collaborative approach with a mill that is leading the way in the development of sustainable fabrics.

“We were excited from the outset to be involved in this project and are delighted that the success of the new EasyJet wardrobe demonstrates the result of our award-winning customer-focused approach and our ability to meet even the most exacting briefs."

From its first flight over 25 years ago, easyJet has been focused on being as carbon efficient as possible to reduce carbon emissions; transitioning its fleet to increasingly more modern, fuel and therefore carbon-efficient planes; flying them in ways that avoid noise and unnecessary use of energy; whilst still flying aircraft full of passengers.

Since 2000 easyJet has reduced the carbon emissions for each kilometre flown by a passenger by over a third. Initiatives have included introducing lightweight carpets, trolleys and seats, single-engine taxiing and removing paper manuals from aircraft.

In 2019, easyJet became the world's first major airline to operate carbon neutral flights across its whole network by offsetting the carbon emissions from the fuel used for all of its flights through schemes accredited by two of the highest verification standards, Gold Standard and the Verified Carbon Standard.

Carbon offsetting is only an interim measure. New technologies are still being developed, so the airline will continue to support innovative technology, including developing hybrid and electric/hydrogen planes, working with others across the industry to reinvent and de-carbonise aviation over the long term. The aim will be for easyJet to reduce the amount of carbon offsetting undertaken as new technologies emerge.

About easyJet

easyJet is Europe's leading airline offering a unique and winning combination of the best route network connecting Europe's primary airports, with great value fares and friendly service. easyJet flies on more of Europe's most popular routes than any other airline and carried more than 96 million passengers in 2019 – more than 16 million travelling for business. The airline has over 300 aircraft on nearly 1000 routes to more than 150 airports across 35 countries. Over 300 million Europeans live within one hour's drive of an easyJet airport.

easyJet aims to be a good corporate citizen, employing people on local contracts in eight countries across Europe in full compliance with national laws and recognising their trade unions. The airline supports a number of local charities and also has a corporate partnership with UNICEF which has raised over £14m for the most vulnerable children since it was established in 2012.

The airline takes sustainability seriously and is the first major airline to operate carbon neutral flights across its whole network. The airline is achieving this goal by offsetting the carbon emissions from the fuel used for all of its flights. The airline sees this as an interim measure until new technology becomes available to de-carbonise aviation. In the meantime, easyJet will continue to support innovative technology, operate efficiently and aim to fill most of its seats. Since 2000, we have improved our carbon emission per passenger kilometre efficiency by over one third and we have a target to reach a 10% reduction by 2022, from a 2016 baseline.

Innovation is in easyJet's DNA – from our launch over 25 years ago when we changed the way people fly to the present day where we lead the industry in digital, web, engineering and operational innovations to make travel more easy and affordable for our passengers.

The airline was named as Britain's Most Admired Company of 2020 in the transport sector, retaining the leading position for a second year running. Britain's Most Admired Companies study is the longest-running annual survey of corporate reputation in the UK.

British airline easyJet has unveiled new pilot and cabin crew uniforms made from recycled plastic bottles.

Each uniform will be made using 45 recycled plastic bottles, and the campaign could translate into the budget airline reusing up to half a million bottles each year, preventing them from ending up in the ocean or in landfills.

The world's first carbon-free airline 's new staff wardrobe is also made from renewable energy sources and has a 75 per cent lower carbon footprint than traditional polyester.

The announcement comes after trials in 2020 to determine how the recycled fabric performed inside the cabin and flight deck were deemed successful.

As well as being more abrasion resistant, the fabric is more elasticated, allowing cabin crew more comfort when performing tasks such as stretching for items in overhead luggage bins. It’s also longer lasting, which will reduce the need for more uniform production in the long term.

Pilots and crew on easyJet flights will don new uniforms made out of 45 recycled plastic bottles as part of the budget airline's commitment to introduce more sustainable changes. EasyJet

Manufactured by Tailored Image in Northern Ireland, the new uniform will be introduced into cabin crew circulation later in August.

Tina Milton, director of cabin services at easyJet, said: "Climate change is an issue for all of us, and at easyJet, we are looking at all parts of our operation to see where we can reduce carbon emissions and reduce waste. We are excited to be debuting this new pilot and cabin crew uniform made from recycled plastic bottles and to introduce it for our pilots and cabin crew colleagues. We know that sustainability is an important issue for them and also for our customers.

"People have a choice in how they travel, and if people choose to fly with us, we want to be one of the best choices they can make."

As well as the new fabric, there’s no plastic to be seen in any of easyJet's new clothing-related packaging.

Plastic collar strays have been replaced with recyclable cardboard ones, plastic shirt clips have been swapped out for metal shirt clips and polypropylene outer shirt covers are now substituted with biodegradable shirt covers.

EasyJet has already taken steps to reduce the number of single-use plastic items on flights.

Many plastic items have been replaced with more sustainable alternatives, including small plant-based bowls as tea bag holders. The airline also offers a 50 pence ($0.70) discount on hot drinks for customers who bring their own reusable cups on flights.

Elsewhere, easyJet has reduced carbon emissions for each kilometre flown by a passenger by over a third, since 2000. Initiatives to achieve this have included introducing lightweight carpets, trolleys and seats, single-engine taxiing and removing paper manuals from aircraft.

Commercial aviation is responsible for about 2 to 3 per cent of global carbon emissions, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Easyjet's recycled cabin crew uniforms win a sustainability award.

UK low-cost carrier easyJet has won a sustainability award for its new pilot and cabin crew uniforms made from 100% recycled plastic. The airline received the accolade at the 2021 Professional Clothing Industry Association Worldwide Awards for keeping millions of plastic bottles from ending up in landfills or finding their way into the oceans.

Why it matters

While 98% of emissions in the aviation industry come from burning jet fuel, that does not mean there are no other areas where sustainability matters. At least eight million tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year. As many as 500 billion plastic bottles are used globally per year, with the average person consuming 156. Sixty million plastic bottles are thrown away every day in the US alone.

easyJet's new uniforms were introduced this summer and utilize 100% recycled plastic. Each uniform is made up of 45 bottles. Over five years, this equates to preventing 2,7 million bottles from ending up in landfills or oceans. It may be just a drop in the sea, but it sets an important example for what is possible - until the world can find a way to deal with its plastic addiction.

“It is fantastic to see our new sustainable uniforms being celebrated. Sustainability is extremely important to us at easyJet, and we continue to work every day to identify and implement ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint across all areas of the business," said Tina Milton, Director of Cabin Services at easyJet, in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Lower carbon footprint

The new uniforms are manufactured by Northern Ireland-based professional clothing specialist Tailored Image and have been issued to both cabin crew and pilots. The new high-tech material fabric has a 75% lower carbon footprint than regular polyester.

Furthermore, the company has replaced plastic in all clothing-related packaging, opting instead for recyclable and biodegradable materials. For instance, cardboard collar strays have replaced their plastic counterparts, and shirt covers are now biodegradable rather than polypropylene.

"Sustainability matters to us, it matters to our customers and together we are making a difference to our environment in a way that does not compromise either the aesthetics of our uniforms or the streamlined processes via which they are ordered and delivered," Tailored Image's Managing Director, Bernard Birt, commented following the reward ceremony.

Targeting emissions across all areas

Beyond working to accelerate new propulsion technology, such as through partnering with Wright Electric, easyJet is looking at different initiatives to cut back emissions across its operations . In August this year, the airline launched a project in collaboration with Bristol Airport to test technological solutions for decarbonizing ground operations and reducing waste. The technologies that are deemed successful will then be implemented across easyJet's network to the extent possible.

Easyjet has announced that it is introducing a new uniform for cabin crew and pilots made from recycled plastic bottles.

Each complete uniform will be made from approximately 45 plastic bottles, saving around 2,700,000 bottles from ending up in land fill or in oceans over the course of the five-year contract with manufacturer Tailored Image.

The new fabric is also made using renewable energy sources and has a carbon footprint 75 per cent lower than traditional polyester. [HAVE ASKED EJ FOR REAL FIGURES]

It was trialled on planes last year and found to have more elasticity and to be resistant to abrasions, making it longer-lasting. This means that fewer uniforms will need to be manufactured.

Plastic has also been replaced in all clothing-related packaging, from collar stays to shirt covers. This follows steps already taken by the airline to reduce plastic waste onboard, such as offering a 50p discount on hot beverages for customers who bring their own reusable cup.

Tina Milton, director of cabin services at easyJet, said: “Climate change is an issue for all of us, and at easyJet, we are looking at all parts of our operation to see where we can reduce carbon emissions and reduce waste.

“We are excited to be debuting this new pilot and cabin crew uniform made from recycled plastic bottles and to introduce it for our pilots and cabin crew colleagues. We know that sustainability is an important issue for them and also for our customers.

“It is a priority for us to continue work on reducing our carbon footprint in the short term, coupled with long-term work to support the development of new technology, including zero-emission planes which aspire to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation radically.”

The increased durability of the uniforms notwithstanding, it is unclear how much benefit making clothing out of recycled plastic bottles actually confers.

Anna Hughes, director of the Flight Free UK campaign said:

“Reducing our plastic waste is an important step in addressing our environmental impact, but realistically it’s a drop in the ocean compared to flight emissions.

“A return flight on one of Easyjet’s popular routes, London to Milan, generates over 300kg of CO2 per passenger – that’s 1.5 times more than you would save from not using single-use plastic for an entire year.”

When it comes to the clothes themselves, microplastics are an issue with polyester, whatever its source material.

Of the 11 million tonnes of plastic entering our oceans each year, around 1 million tonnes do so in the form of ‘primary microplastics’ or plastics measuring less than 5mm, according to the Marine Conservation Society.

Washing synthetic clothing accounts for 35 per cent of primary microplastics found in the environment, with an estimated 9.4 trillion fibres released from washes every week in the UK.

Furthermore, plastic bottles are often recycled into new plastic bottles. Once they are broken down and remade into polyester, however, they are much more difficult to recycle further.

Each uniform will be made from 45 recycled plastic bottles

The British low-cost carrier easyJet has found an innovative way to update its pilot and cabin crew wardrobe . The new uniforms will be made out of recycled plastic bottles that could otherwise end up polluting the planet.

Roughly 45 bottles will go into each uniform and over the course of a five-year contract, the airline will prevent a total of 2,7 million bottles, or over 500 thousand bottles per year, being dumped into landfills or in the ocean.

Apart from incorporating plastic bottles, the new uniforms make use of high-tech material from renewable energy sources that has a 75% lower carbon footprint than traditional polyester. In comparison to non-recycled material, it’s more abrasion-resistant. It also offers more elasticity and the possibility of lasting longer, decreasing the number of uniform items needed in the long term.

The new design was manufactured by Northern-Ireland based company Tailored Image and trialed last year. It’ll go into circulation among the crew this month.

In its efforts to become more environment-friendly, easyJet has also replaced clothing-related packaging, such as using recyclable cardboard collar strays instead of plastic ones, metal shirt clips, and biodegradable shirt covers.

The airline has also been en route to reducing single-use plastic items from its flights: it has introduced a plant-based teabag holder, removed 27 million plastic items from its inflight retail business in 2020, and has never used plastic straws. Additionally, customers who bring their own reusable cup onboard its planes will receive a 50p discount on hot drinks.

“Climate change is an issue for all of us, and at easyJet, we are looking at all parts of our operation to see where we can reduce carbon emissions and reduce waste,” said Tina Milton, Director of Cabin Services at easyJet.

easyJet has announced that it is introducing a new uniform for cabin crew and pilots, each made from around 45 recycled plastic bottles as part of its commitment to mitigate waste.

Manufactured by Northern-Ireland based Tailored Image, the new uniform will be introduced into cabin crew circulation this month.

According to easyJet, the rollout across the airline is estimated to prevent around half a million plastic bottles from ending up as plastic waste each year.

The new material is made using renewable energy sources and has a 75% lower carbon footprint than traditional polyester.

The new fabric was first trialled last year for suitability in the cabin and flight deck environments and was found to have more elasticity and to be resistant to abrasions, making it longer-lasting. This will reduce the need for more uniform items to be produced in the long term.

The airline has also replaced plastic in all clothing-related packaging in favour of recyclable and biodegradable materials, for instance replacing plastic collar strays with recyclable cardboard ones, plastic shirt clips with metal shirt clips, non-recyclable white coated card with recyclable cardboard card and polypropylene outer shirt covers with biodegradable shirt covers.

This follows steps already taken by the airline to reduce plastic waste onboard, such as introducing a small plant-based bowl as a teabag holder, removing over 27 million individual items of plastic from its inflight retail operation in 2020, and offering a 50p discount on hot beverages for customers who bring their own reusable cup.

“It is a priority for us to continue work on reducing our carbon footprint in the short term, coupled with long-term work to support the development of new technology, including zero-emission planes which aspire to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation radically. We continue to work with innovative technology partners Wright Electric and Airbus. Each of them has set out its ambitious timetables for bringing zero-emission aircraft into commercial service to become a reality.

“People have a choice in how they travel, and if people choose to fly with us, we want to be one of the best choices they can make.”

Bernard Birt, Managing Director of Tailored Image, added: “Our role as a bespoke uniform and corporate wear provider is to deliver innovative solutions for our clients, built around comfort and practicality for their wearers. The additional challenge with the easyJet project was to meet their exceptionally high standards in reducing environmental impact.

“By combining the expertise of our design and garment technology teams, we developed a collaborative approach with a mill that is leading the way in the development of sustainable fabrics.

easyJet To Make Uniforms From Recycled Plastic Bottles

Once infamous for its bright orange outfits and ‘I’m an easy (jet) crew member’ polo shirts, over the years its fair to say that easyJet has certainly smartened up its look.

easyjet uniform

Now, as the aviation industry is forced to face up to a more sustainable future the airline has unveiled a new uniform for its Cabin and Flight Crews made from recycled plastic bottles.

Created by Norther Irish apparel designers Tailored Image, each uniform is made from approximately 45 recycled plastic bottles.

The unique high-tech fabric is produced with a yarn made of 100% recycled plastic bottles. It has also been created using renewable energy sources, giving the uniform a 75% lower carbon footprint than traditional polyester.

The roll-out of the uniform will potentially prevent 2.7 million plastic bottles from ending up in landfill or our oceans over five years. The move is part of easyJet’s commitment to mitigate waste and reduce its carbon footprint.

Trialled by Pilots and Cabin Crew last year, the new material is more abrasion resistant and provides more stretch than the old uniform. This not only adds more comfort for the wearer, but will also make each piece longer lasting reducing the need for more uniform items to be produced in the long term.

We know that sustainability is an important issue for them and also for our customers.”

She added: “It is a priority for us to continue work on reducing our carbon footprint in the short term, coupled with long-term work to support the development of new technology, including zero-emission planes which aspire to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation radically.

“We continue to work with innovative technology partners Wright Electric and Airbus. Each of them has set out its ambitious timetables for bringing zero-emission aircraft into commercial service to become a reality.”

Check out the video below looking at how easyJet is leading the way with sustainable aviation…

easyJet is introducing new uniforms for its cabin crew and pilots that are made from recycled plastic, with 45 bottles going into each outfit, the firm said.

Up to half a million bottles will be re-used each year as part of the change to the new uniform, which is made from a high-tech material created using renewable energy.

easyJet says it will replace all uniforms over a five-year contract, potentially preventing 2.7 million plastic bottles from going into landfill or the ocean.

The new uniforms have been developed by Northern-Ireland based Tailored Image, and will be introduced into cabin crew circulation this month.

The material used to create the uniforms has a 75 per cent lower carbon footprint than the polyester currently used to make the outfits worn by airline staff.

While easyJet offsets the carbon emitted from their flights and takes measures to reduce emissions, it has come under fire from Greenpeace and other campaigners for operating short haul domestic flights with rail alternatives.

UN report says global warming is ALREADY causing extreme weather and the world will heat up by 1.5C by 2040 - a decade earlier than forecast

The Earth is likely to warm by 1.5C within the next 20 years — a decade earlier than previously expected.

Heatwaves, flooding and droughts will also become more frequent and intense, a UN report has warned.

Scientists had expected temperatures to rise by 1.5C above pre-industrial levels between 2030 and 2052 but now believe it will happen between this year and 2040.

The report into climate change also said it was 'unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, oceans and land'.

Since 1970, global surface temperatures have risen faster than in any other 50-year period over the past 2,000 years, the authors said, while the past five years have been the hottest on record since 1850.

'It's just guaranteed that it's going to get worse,' said report co-author Linda Mearns, a senior climate scientist at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research.

'I don't see any area that is safe… Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.'

It comes as record heatwaves, wildfires and floods hit countries around the world.

The 1.5C mark is considered to be the point where climate change  becomes increasingly dangerous.

The new fabric, adapted to the airline's current style, was first trialled last year for suitability in the cabin and flight deck environments, said Tailored Image.

Compared to the non-recycled alternative, it is more abrasion-resistant, and provides more elasticity with better fit and freedom of movement for the crew.

This development can lead to it being long-lasting for the wearer, reducing the need for more uniform items to be produced in the long term, the firm said.

Beyond the new fabric, plastic has also been replaced in the packaging and other related items used to send out the uniform to crew and pilots.

Plastic collar strays will be replaced with recyclable cardboard ones, plastic shirt clips with metal shirt clips, non-recyclable white coated card with recyclable cardboard card and polypropylene outer shirt covers with biodegradable shirt covers.

easyJet says this is an expansion of its existing efforts to reduce onboard plastic, including reducing the number of single-use plastic items on its flights.

The airline has already replaced many items with more sustainable alternatives, such as introducing a small plant-based bowl as a teabag holder.

The firm says it has removed over 27 million individual items of plastic from inflight retail operation in Financial Year 2020, and has never offered plastic straws.

It also offers a 50p discount on hot drinks for customers bringing a reusable cup.

Tina Milton, Director of Cabin Services at easyJet, said climate change is an issue fore everyone, and easyJet are doing what they can to reduce emissions and waste.

'We are excited to be debuting this new pilot and cabin crew uniform made from recycled plastic bottles and to introduce it for our pilots and cabin crew colleagues,' Milton said, adding 'sustainability is an important issue.'

'It is a priority for us to continue work on reducing our carbon footprint in the short term, coupled with long-term work to support the development of new technology, including zero-emission planes which aspire to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation radically.

The firm says it is working on transitioning its fleet to increasingly more modern, fuel and therefore carbon-efficient planes.

Since 2000 easyJet has reduced the carbon emissions for each kilometre flown by a passenger by over a third. Initiatives have included introducing lightweight carpets, trolleys and seats, single-engine taxiing and removing paper manuals from aircraft.

In 2019, easyJet became the world's first major airline to operate carbon neutral flights across its whole network by offsetting the carbon emissions from the fuel used for all of its flights, something they say is an 'only an interim measure'.

While easyJet has come out on top in terms of the airline doing the most to reduce carbon emissions from flying, it has previously come under fire for operating routes also available by rail.

In February, it launched 12 domestic UK routes that saw Greenpeace say it shows the airline is prioritising profit over the planet's health.

An easyJet spokesperson said: 'The new routes which will operate this summer have been introduced in response to the demand we’re seeing for domestic air travel in the UK and as with all our flights, we offset all of the carbon emissions from the fuel used for them.'

They added that they are 'supporting the development of radical new technologies to achieve zero-emission flying in the future, which we are committed to transitioning to as soon as they are available'.

Eight million tonnes of plastics find their way into the ocean every year

Of 30 billion plastic bottles used by UK households each year, only 57 per cent are currently recycled.

With half of these going to landfill, half of all plastic bottles that are recycled go to waste.

Around 700,000 plastic bottles a day end up as litter.

This is largely due to plastic wrapping around bottles that are non-recyclable.

Bottles are a major contributor to the increasing amount of plastic waste in the world's oceans.

Researchers warned eight million tonnes of plastics currently find their way into the ocean every year - the equivalent of one truckload every minute.

The amount of plastic rubbish in the world's oceans will outweigh fish by 2050 unless the world takes drastic action to further recycle, a report released in 2016 revealed.

At current rates, this will worsen to four truckloads per minute in 2050 and outstrip native life to become the largest mass inhabiting the oceans.

An overwhelming 95 per cent of plastic packaging - worth £65 - £92billion - is lost to the economy after a single use, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation report stated.

And available research estimates that there are more than 150 million tonnes of plastics in the ocean today.

It is estimated that about eight million metric tons of plastic find their way into the world's oceans every year

Plastic pollution is ruining the ecosystems of the world, both marine and terrestrial. It litters shorelines, snags animals and suffocates entire populations of animals

So much plastic is dumped into the sea each year that it would fill five carrier bags for every foot of coastline on the planet, scientists have warned.

More than half of the plastic waste that flows into the oceans comes from just five countries: China, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.

The only industrialized western country on the list of top 20 plastic polluters is the United States at No. 20.

The US and Europe are not mismanaging their collected waste, so the plastic trash coming from those countries is due to litter, researchers said.

While China is responsible for 2.4 million tons of plastic that makes its way into the ocean, nearly 28 percent of the world total, the United States contributes just 77,000 tons, which is less than one percent, according to the study published in the journal Science.

easyJet's new cabin crew uniforms are covered in LEDs

Whether it's recon drones , VR training or 3D-printed plane parts , easyJet is quick to embrace new technologies. The company's latest experiment is a little more garish -- to mark its 20th birthday, cabin crew and engineers are getting brand-new uniforms littered with colourful LEDs. With the cabin crew, you'll notice tiny lights on their jacket lapels that illuminate to reveal flight numbers, destinations and other useful tidbits. Extra LEDs have been sewn onto the shoulders which, along with some illuminated hems, are designed to help staff and travellers in the event of an emergency. Finally, there are built-in microphones so the crew can communicate with one another and the passengers.

EasyJet's engineers, meanwhile, will be sporting new coats with LEDs attached to the hood. In theory, this should make it easier for them to work in difficult lighting conditions by keeping their hands free for the task at hand. Built-in microphones and cameras will help with remote diagnosis and repairs, while air quality sensors and barometers monitor their environment. The airline operator says the new engineer and cabin crew garments will be trialled in early 2016 -- the extra features could prove useful, although we suspect the designs won't be to everyone's tastes. They're a little Starlight Express , after all.

Reaching new heights with easyJet

This is a customer needing no introduction. The second largest budget airline in Europe, easyJet flies on more of Europe’s most popular routes than any other airline and carries 73 million passengers annually. Over 300 aircraft travel on more than 800 routes to over 154 airports across 31 countries, and with such mileage accumulated, a comfortable and hard-wearing uniform is a must. Tailored Image had the privilege of working with this prestigious client on providing a ground-breaking new sustainable uniform solution for its 14,000 pilots and cabin crew across the UK and mainland Europe.

Reaching new heights with easyJet

Sustainability First

Unlike many other uniform contracts where design is the primary concern, easyJet’s brief was entirely sustainability led; the challenge being to provide a sustainable uniform in keeping with the airline’s current design. Following intense collaboration with a mill specialising in innovative production techniques, Tailored Image provided a solution which converts 45 plastic bottles into the fabric required for each suit. Over the course of the 5 year contract, this uniform solution will prevent 2.7 million plastic bottles from reaching landfill or polluting our oceans. This innovative approach to uniform procurement is in keeping with the airline’s commitment to mitigate waste and search for sustainable change beyond carbon reduction.

Sustainability First

Wearer Trials

Featuring unique high-tech material, this new uniform range was subject to extensive wearer trials which were successfully facilitated by Tailored Image. Feedback from the trials was extremely positive, with a consensus that the uniform provided greater freedom of movement through improved stretch in the fabric, was more comfortable, easier to wash and achieved a good fit for the wearer. Improved durability has also been achieved with the new range which will improve the longevity for the wearer, leading to less uniforms needing to be purchased in the long term and thus further improving sustainability in uniform procurement for easyJet.

Wearer Trials

Intuitive Ordering Process

Tailored Image’s Uniform Ordering System has a range of modern and intuitive features which has helped facilitate uniform orders for easyJet during challenging lockdown periods. These include a portal for staff to order their uniform online within their individually allocated points allowance and have it delivered to their home address, all across the UK and all European operating countries.

The online web application has been designed to be a fully responsive retail ‘look and feel’ experience – meaning orders can be placed with ease from mobile and tablet devices using an interface similar to many other online modern retailers. Should staff wish to purchase additional items they can do so using their own credit or debit card by placing a personal order. Returns can also be logged online and a unique returns authorisation number is generated which facilitates the tracking of the items through the returns process. easyJet staff are also able to view their order status, points transaction history, delivery tracking information and browse wearer guides and other useful information associated with their uniform.

Intuitive Ordering Process

Cultural Fit

One of the reasons cited by easyJet as to why Tailored Image was selected for this contract over stiff competition was the good ‘cultural fit’ and teamworking approach they experienced during many visits to Tailored Image. This, coupled with the demonstration of excellent innovative design, manufacturing and logistical ability, meant Tailored Image shone brightly above other suppliers.
