India was ruled by the Mughals and Britishers for many years. The British Raj lasted until August 1947. Post that, Bharat has to face the consequence of the divide-and-rule policy of the Britishers. This policy segregated the country into two parts: the Republic of India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Freedom is an urge to rise up and fight against the odds to set yourself free. India has also fought courageously against the Britishers to earn Independence. Democracy and liberal feeling thriving in today’s India is the result of the Indian Freedom Struggle.

What is the Indian Freedom Struggle?

Indian Freedom Struggle was an inspiring journey for every citizen of India and it has been written in golden words in the history of India. The freedom we experience today is the courageous saga of sacrifices, relentless efforts, and unwavering determination of the freedom fighters of our land that induced the feeling of unity and strength among all the people of India.

The Indian Freedom struggle led to a large-scale campaign which resulted in the end of British rule in India. Freedom was demanded by the Nationalists and the Congress party.

Initially, the leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Annie Besant, Dadahai Naoroji, and Gopal Krishna Gokhale raised their voices and put forward the feelings and aspirations of freedom of the Indian masses.

Mahatma Gandhi emerged as the face of the Indian Freedom Struggle and his weapon was “non-violence” which set India free from the hold of British rule.

We all have heard and read a lot about India’s Freedom Struggle through books, movies, theatre, etc. Every Indian citizen experiences a feeling of pride and respect for all those freedom fighters who struggled for Indian independence . It was all initiated in the late 1800s and lasted till 1947. Later, India became a republic in 1950. Indian men and women were colonized and ruled by the Britishers.

Despite the diversity of the country, the Indian Freedom Struggle was the result of unity. People belonging to different castes, languages, religions, and regions undividedly fought for India’s freedom selflessly. The unity eradicated the social barriers and eventually resulted in freedom for the country.

Freedom fighters like Uddham Singh, Veer Savarkar, Tantia Tope, Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Rani Laxmi Bai and many others had devoted their lives to the motherland.

Mahatma Gandhi introduced the concept of Satyagraha. He believed that passive resistance and civil disobedience are influential weapons to challenge the dominating Britishers.

Acts like Quit India Movement, Non-Cooperation Movement , and Civil Disobedience Movement have united millions of Indians in a non-violent Indian Freedom struggle.

The Indian freedom struggle not only resulted in eradicating British rule but also inspired the whole world. Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of civil disobedience and non-violence helped other freedom movements across the globe.

The Indian Freedom struggle is literally a historic journey of Independence. The story of every freedom fighter of that time is so unique and inspiring that it induces a proud feeling among every citizen of India. The seeds of freedom were sown during the 19th century and it seemed like a never-ending war. During this period India witnessed many reform movements. The hard work, dedication and sacrifice of social reformers laid the groundwork for an awakened society.

Everyone in the country followed an identical tune of independence. In 1885, the formation of INC (Indian National Congress) indicated the beginning of a collective political movement against Britishers. The country demanded “Swaraj” i.e. self-rule and it became a ringing call resonating in the heart and minds of the masses.

Whenever we think about freedom and independence, Mahatma Gandhi will always strike us as an undisputed leader of the Indian Freedom Struggle. His philosophy of non-violence has inspired the whole world and is followed to date. He became the guiding leader who believed Satyagraha and civil disobedience as a potent weapon to fight against British authority.

Major Events of the Indian Freedom Struggle

From 1920-1922, Mahatma Gandhi led the first large-scale mass movement against the British Raj i.e. the Non-Cooperation Movement. People boycott British educational institutions, British goods, as well as Civil services etc. This movement was suspended by the Britishers, yet it brought the masses together in the Indian Freedom Struggle.

Another key period in the Indian Freedom Struggle was the Civil Disobedience Movement (1930-1934). It all started with Mahatma Gandhi and his group of supporters marching to the Arabian Sea to make salt in protest of the British salt tax. People from many walks of life, including women and farmers, actively participated in this campaign.

The Quit India Movement (1942) was a turning point in India’s struggle for independence. It demanded that British authority in India be ended immediately. The British replied with persecution and brutality, but the Indian people’s tenacious spirit won over the Britishers. Several major leaders were imprisoned as a result of the campaign, and it acted as a wake-up call to the British that their rule in India was indefensible.

Many freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose, Chandrashekhar Azad and many others fought and became martyrs in Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Subhash Chandra Bose, and countless others became martyrs in the fight for freedom. Their bravery and dedication would always inspire generations.

On 15 August 1947, India became independent after a really long fight and sacrifice. Today, we all live in a democratic society, liberal in terms of thoughts as well as actions. This freedom and democracy is the dedication, hard work, unity, and sacrifice of the freedom fighters.

Thus, after a long struggle the nation celebrated freedom, as the National flag was unfurled with Jawaharlal Nehru’s iconic speech “Tryst with Destiny.” His speech echoed India’s dreams and aspirations.

In conclusion, the freedom journey of India is an epic transformation journey from early reform movements to Mahatma Gandhi’s guidance and sacrifice of countless fighters.

The Arrival Of British In India

Initially, the British came to India in the year 1600 with the objective of doing business under the name of East India Company .

Under the guise of silk, tea, and the cotton trade , he started spreading chaos in India and gradually made the country his slave.

And after that, the British took the rule of the entire country into their hands and started persecuting the Indians.

And due to this, gradually the demand for freedom started arising in the country.

The Revolt Of 1857

Fed up with the dictatorship of the British, the countrymen decided to end British rule.

And in the year 1857, the first freedom struggle was started by an Indian soldier Mangal Pandey .

This struggle was a great event against British rule.

This struggle was not accidental but a result of the discontent of the entire century. A great plan was made and implemented for this.

The revolt of 1857 which began with the revolt of military personnel in Meerut soon spread throughout India and posed a serious challenge to British rule.

Along with soldiers, common citizens, large princely states of the country also participated in this struggle.

Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi fought a glorious war against the British and led her forces.

Bhagat Singh avenged this by killing Officer John Sanders and he was also prosecuted for the Lahore Conspiracy.

And on the night of 23 March 1931, Bhagat Singh was hanged along with Sukhdev and Rajguru . After this, the Quit India Movement started in 1942.

This movement showed a ray of hope to the people of India, but despite difficult struggles, this movement was not so successful. But it shook the roots of British rule.

Similarly, many freedom fighters like Subhash Chandra Bose, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Chandrashekhar Azad, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, etc . struggled a lot to make the country independent.

Soon the British rulers signed an agreement and decided to leave India and India got independence on 15 August 1947 .

In this way, the country got independence after a stiff struggle of Indian soldiers as well as freedom fighters . And with this, many freedom fighters had sacrificed their lives.

The book traces India’s struggle for independence against the colonial British government. This is an autobiography of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the most sizable and prominent freedom fighter of India’s freedom movement, narrated by Maulana in a series of conversations with Humayun Kabir.

Kabir was an alumnus of the Calcutta and Oxford Universities, he served as a lecturer in Andhra and Calcutta Universities. He was also a politician. In 1946 Azad appointed him to serve as his secretary and therefore he was closely associated with Azad. Later he served various responsibilities to the government of India as a cabinet minister. The author of more than 20 books in English and Bangla on philosophy, literature, politics and culture.

The book starts with a brief introduction of Azad’s personal life, background and about his intellectual development. Azad was born in Mecca in 1888 his forefathers came to India from Herat in Babar’s days. According to Maulana, he was from a core traditional family who believed in the old ways of life. He stated that when all the old bonds imposed on his mind by family and upbringing were completely shattered and he felt free of all conventional ties and decided that he would chalk out his path.

It was about that time that he decided to adopt a pen name “Azad” or “free” to indicate that he was no longer tied to his inherited beliefs. Later he was attracted to revolutionary politics and joined one of the groups. He toured Egypt, Turkey and France at the age of 20. After returning from the tour, he established a journal ‘Al-Hilal’ at the age of 14. It was first published in 1912.

India wins Freedom reveals some very important aspects of India’s freedom movement. What were the efforts of Congress to make India an independent state and how the Muslim league was one of the hurdles for congress? And what were the conflicts between the Congress and the League?

Congress’s main contribution was they had tried very hard to unite Indians against British colonialism. They had launched several mass movements to pressurize Britishers. For example, in 1920 Congress launched the “non-Corporation movement” under the leadership of Gandhi, in 1929 Congress passed the independence resolution and gave the British government one year’s notice of its intention to launch a mass movement if the national demand were not fulfilled. The Britishers refused to comply with Congress’s demand and in 1930 Congress declared that the salt laws would be violated and hence began the satyagraha movement.

And in contrast, the Muslim league’s approach was very much based on identity politics. Muslim league was established in 1906 in Deccan after the session of the Muslim Educational l Conference during Christmas. According to Azad two basic reasons behind the establishment of the Muslim league were, first, to strengthen and develop a feeling and loyalty to the British government among the Muslims of India. Second, to advance the claims of Muslims against Hindus and other communities in respect of service under the crown and thus safeguarding Muslims and rights.

However, history bears witness that Muslims had sacrificed a great deal for India’s independence and hence these claims of Maulana are questionable. Maulana also narrates that, British Government always used the Muslim League as a counter to the demands of the Congress. Maulana quotes, “Congress had taken a national stand on this question while the Muslim league demanded that the Congress should give up its national character and function as a communal organization” . Muslim League’s primary allegation was that Congress is national only in name.

Maulana was arrested several times for his activities as the tallest leader of congress. Maulana’s acceptance, influence in the Congress and his efforts to unite India remain unmatched.

For example, Mr. CR Das, Motilal Nehru and Hakim Ajmal Khan had formed the Swaraj Party and presented the council entry program ( to know it, refer to the book) which was opposed by the orthodox followers of Gandhi – congress thus divided between no-changers and pro-changers. It seemed that Congress would be divided. But, when Maulana came out from arrest he reconciled between the two groups. He was then 35 and asked to preside over this session. It was said that he was the youngest man to be elected president of Congress. He played the same character several times.

The book is quite helpful in understanding the different political narratives and efforts of the various political parties in the freedom struggle. The book depicts how big leaders of congress like Gandhi, Nehru had made big political blunders that ultimately led to the partition of the country. For example, Gandhi returned empty-handed from the round table conference. Gandhi made Jinnah a Star. And similarly, Nehru made the biggest mistakes in India’s political history. The “British Cabinet Mission” accepted by Congress and Muslim League to form an interim government in West Bengal, Sind and NWFP had all the powers except defense, communication and foreign affairs. This idea is primarily driven by Maulana Azad. In 1946 Nehru became president of Congress with the support of Maulana and he restricted himself to not to be president further. Maulana quotes, it was the biggest blunder of his political career.

In a press conference, Nehru answered a question to a journalist by stating that the British cabinet mission can be changed in the future by the majority in the Constituent assembly. And this statement was the bombshell for Jinnah that would prelude to partition, Maulana stated.

On August 16, 1946, in reaction to Nehru’s statement, Jinnah Declared “Direct Action Day” on that day bloody violence occurred between Hindus and Muslims and all the efforts of Maulana to unite the Hindus and Muslims would go in vain.

The book highlights the fact that all leaders of congress were in fact not secular, congress also had communal voices in her tent-like Sardar Patel and other leaders. Hence, the league’s allegation on congress, that Congress is national only in name was not entirely correct but then it was not even wrong completely.

The most inspiring part of the entire book is Azad’s relentless resistance against the two-nation theory. According to Jinnah and the Muslim league, partition was the only solution for the sake of Muslims in the region as a minority. Azad strongly opposed that point of view and told that the Idea of Pakistan is not only wrong from an Islamic perspective but also harmful for the Muslims in the region.

The last chapter of the book is titled ” The End of a Dream”. Maulana narrates, how Nehru and even Gandhi gave up by accepting the two nations’ theory with frustration. Maulana had tried to his last extent to break that idea. For that, he even presented the interim government system which was accepted by the Britishers or even by Muslim League. The book to a large extent will give you an unbiased view of India’s freedom struggle.

Before the partition, Maulana had made a few depictions pertaining to the result of the two-nation theory. It is shocking how much of his predictions have turned into a reality today.

The speculation then was right on the dot. The pages were indeed suppressed to avoid embarrassing Nehru. However, the authors could not have calculated on his grandson being in his chair 30 years later. And if Azad's grandniece and Congress(I) MP, Najma Heptullah, was really trying to make up for this lack of prescience by stalling publication last February, she only ended up making things worse for her party.

The timing is much worse now that it coincides with Nehru's centenary, than if the seals had been broken as stipulated on Azad's 30th death anniversary on February 22,1988. Moreover, the publicity generated by the complex court battle and the continuing mystery have hugely increased interest in Azad's views - many of them highly subjective.

Heptullah had obtained a court stay against the unsealing last February, demanding details of royalty accounts for the already published version from publishers Orient Longman. Kabir had contracted with Longman in September 1958 to publish the censored version. The agreement also gave Longman "firstright" to publish the full text of the papers in 1988.

Heptullah disputed Longman's prerogative, arguing among other things that Kabir had no right to enter into an agreement in the first place. She held that Azad's descendants should now have the right to decide on publication - or further suppression. Though she had no idea what the manuscript contained, she might just have emerged with credit for saving her leader some political embarrassment.

The attendant publicity was in any case welcome, as she has been in the political wilderness since she ceased to be deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha in 1986. That Heptullah found herself ranged against not only Longman but also Kabir's daughter, Jayati Leila, the press, and public opinion, should have come as no surprise. She was seen to be preventing the nation from access to its legacy.

Combining as he did erudite scholarship of Arabic and Urdu with a clear vision of secular unity, the Maulana had become one of the top five leaders of the freedom movement by the early '40s. Though his stern, patrician image did not make for populist charisma, his skill at maintaining political balance and his sturdy upright reputation through the previous two decades placed him among the possible contenders for leadership of free India.

If Jinnah represented the politics of Muslim separatism, Nehru's was a vision of socialist development and Patel stood for a strong political centre with indigenous economic growth, Azad uncompromisingly stood on the platform of national unity - whatever compromises that might involve in developmental initiative or political strength. Azad would have been happy as long as the nation could just be held together, and he believed he could have managed it.

Indeed, the crux of what he held back in the early version was his bitter regret that he had given up his claim to the top job and, more so, that he had handed his mantle to Nehru and not Patel. Having steered Congress through the Quit India Movement and negotiations with the British Cabinet Mission from 1939 to 1945, Azad handed over Congress presidentship to Nehru in 1946, the year the incumbent was asked to form an interim government.

"I have regretted no action of mine so much," he says, as having demurred before the popular Congress demand "that I should be charged with the responsibility of launching free India on its course". He debunks the popular view that Gandhi backed Nehru. As Azad tells it. Gandhi "was not wholly pleased that I had proposed that Jawaharlal should succeed me. Perhaps he was somewhat inclined towards Sardar Patel".

Azad is sure that Patel would not have given the Muslim League the chance Nehru did to repudiate the Cabinet Mission Plan. Envisaging League participation, the plan provided for highly autonomous provinces and a weak Centre. It was accepted by Congress in the teeth of fierce opposition from the 'Congress Socialists', with whom Nehru empathised.

Azad is not, however, completely favourable to Patel. He records that Patel later became the first Congress convert to the two-nation theory after the frustrating experience of trying to work with the League in the interim government. "Jinnah may have raised the flag of Partition but now the real flag bearer was Patel". For this, as also for his deliberate failure to protect Muslims during the Partition riots, Azad cannot forgive Patel.

But the one who causes Azad real anguish is undoubtedly Nehru. Krishna Menon he can dismiss as dishonest, Purshottamdas Tandon's views don't deserve his respect, Mountbatten was vainly in search of a niche in history, but Nehru's blunders were unforgiveable. He was after all "one of my dearest friends'', a trusted comrade whom he had himself placed at the helm.

One can almost see the old man, his frail body still held erect, shed a quiet tear as he talks of his dream being shattered by his beloved friend's foolishness, as he thinks of the history that might have been. The following extracts from his memoirs, published for the first time in their original form, reveal the poignant anguish of a nationalist par excellence.

Press representatives further asked if this meant that the Cabinet Mission Plan could be modified.

Jawaharlal replied emphatically that the Congress had agreed only to participate in the Constituent Assembly and regarded itself free to change or modify the Cabinet Mission Plan as it thought best.

The Muslim League had accepted the Cabinet Mission Plan only under duress. Naturally Mr Jinnah was not very happy about it. In his speech to the League Council, he had clearly stated that he recommended acceptance only because nothing better could be obtained. His political adversaries started to criticise him by saying that he had failed to deliver the goods.

They accused him that he had given up the idea of an independent Islamic state. They also taunted him that if the League was willing to accept the Cabinet Mission Plan - which denied the right of the Muslims to form a separate state - why had Mr Jinnah made so much fuss about an independent Islamic state?

Mr Jinnah was thus not at all happy about the outcome of the negotiations with the Cabinet Mission. Jawaharlal's statement came to him as a bombshell. He immediately issued a statement that this declaration by the Congress President demanded a review of the whole situation. He accordingly asked Liaqat Ali Khan to call a meeting of the League Council and issued a statement to the following effect.

The Muslim League Council had accepted the Cabinet Mission Plan in Delhi as it was assured that the Congress also had accepted the scheme and the plan would be the basis of the future constitution of India. Now that the Congress President had declared that the Congress could change the scheme through its majority in the Constituent Assembly, this would mean that the minorities would be placed at the mercy of the majority.

His view was that Jawaharlal's declaration meant that the Congress had rejected the Cabinet Mission Plan and as such the Viceroy should call upon the Muslim League which had accepted the plan to form the government.

The Muslim League Council met at Bombay on July 27. Mr Jinnah in his opening speech reiterated the demand for Pakistan as the only course left open to the Muslim League. After three days discussion, the Council passed a resolution rejecting the Cabinet Mission Plan. It also decided to resort to direct action for the achievement of Pakistan.

I was extremely perturbed by this new development. I saw that the scheme for which I had worked so hard was being destroyed through our own action. I felt that a meeting of the Working Committee must immediately be held to review the situation. Jawaharlal was not at first willing but when I insisted, he agreed. The Working Committee accordingly met on August 8 and reviewed the whole political situation.

I pointed out that if we wanted to save the situation, we must make it clear that the statement of the Congress President at the Bombay press conference was his personal opinion and did not conform to the decision of the Congress. I explained that the view of the Congress was expressed by the resolution passed by the AICC and no individual, not even the Congress President, could change it.

Jawaharlal argued that he had no objection if the Working Committee wanted to reiterate that the Cabinet Mission Plan has been accepted by the Congress, but felt that it would be embarrassing to the organisation and also to him personally if the Working Committee passed a resolution that the statement of the Congress President did not represent the policy of the Congress.

August 16,1946, was a black day not only for Calcutta but for the whole of India. The turn that events had taken made it almost impossible to expect a peaceful solution by agreement between the Congress and the Muslim League. This was one of the greatest tragedies of Indian history and I have to say with the deepest of regret that a large part of the responsibility for this development rests with Jawaharlal.

His unfortunate statement that the Congress would be free to modify the Cabinet Mission Plan re-opened the whole question of political and communal settlement. Mr Jinnah took full advantage of his mistake and withdrew from the League's early acceptance of the Cabinet Mission Plan.

Indian Freedom Struggle

The Indian freedom struggle is one of the most significant progress in the history of India. In 1600, the Britishers entered India in the name of trade-specific items like tea, cotton and silk and started ruling our country. Later on, they started ruling our country and made our Indian people their slaves. So, our country has to face the most challenging times to gain independence from British rule. In 1857, the first movement against the British was initiated by Mangal Pandey, an Indian soldier.

India also started various movements against the Britishers to get independence from their rule. One of them includes the Civil Disobedience Movement that started against the British salt monopoly. India could not manufacture salt and had to buy it from the British people by paying huge sums.

After we gained independence, India became one country that gave its citizens some freedom with limited restrictions. Now, India is a free country and the world’s largest democracy.

During the days of struggle with the Britishers, India drafted a Constitution, which became applicable after independence. Our Constitution provides several freedom rights relevant to all Indian citizens equally. More importantly, these rights are constitutionally equal to every citizen.

Our constitutional rights are the right to equality, freedom, right against exploitation, freedom of religion, culture and educational rights, and right to constitutional remedies.

Importance of Freedom

We can understand the actual value of something when we achieve or earn it by sacrificing our lives. Freedom also means liberalisation from oppression, freedom from racism, opposition, discrimination, and other relatable things. Freedom doesn’t allow us to violate and disregard others’ rights.

The Freedom of Speech

Freedom of Speech is one of the fundamental human rights of an Indian citizen. An individual can convey his emotions, needs, and wants through speech. For a healthy democracy, the right to freedom of speech is essential for the citizens. The framers of the Constitution knew the importance of this right and declared this a Fundamental Right of every Indian citizen.
