National language drives national unity in any country, even if there are hundreds of other languages and dialects present in the state. Apart from a name, a boundary, a currency, or a flag, a national language makes a county respectable. National language clearly indicates the national character of a country. If you want to penetrate and understand profoundly into a society, you must know how to speak and write their language. If you are fluent in someone else’s native language, their people will readily accept you and you can better understand the cultural aspects and nuances of that society.

National language has a connection with the people of the country and their territory. One or the other languages are spoken in a country are sometimes referred as national languages, but one must steer clear from such confusion.

The National language of a country makes the people of a country unique from others, if you respect and speak their language, it can be a favoured source of interaction at the level of entry for businesses.

Instances from history establish that all great leaders gave their best to fortify their national language. Zedong Mao from China was a revolutionary leader, who significantly respected his language. He knew many secondary languages, but he always used Chinese to communicate with others. Several nations, however, were divided on the basis of the difference in languages only.

Nations like Singapore and India use English as their official language despite having Malay and Hindi as their national languages respectively. English is an international language, which is taking the place of many national languages in several countries. Still, one must make effort to uphold their national language and not let it die. In Singapore, there are four official languages- Malay, Tamil, English, and Mandarin, with the speakers of Mandarin and English being the highest in number.

English is already a popular trend in the Singapore, but business Chinese is also regaining its status as the Chinese economy is growing. The vicissitudes of the Chinese economy push the people to learn Chinese in Singapore in order to make use of new opportunities in both the countries.

However, there is an unfortunate trend in recent times in several countries. English is inflicted upon children and adults in these countries where English is not the national language. Moreover, it is considered as a symbol of elite class and it has become a benchmark to judge the literacy level of an individual. This unfortunate trend is taking the young generations further away from the national language. Even the competitive exams are held in the English language despite having other national and official languages.

On the brighter side, thousands of economies have flourished and developed without disrespecting their national language. Countries like China,

Iran and Germany are flourishing at their best while respecting their national language and the world looks up to them for trade and learning history.

Personal Experience

During my Master's program, I was given the opportunity to participate in an industrial lab training program in Bangalore along with my classmates. Upon arrival, we encountered a communication issue as many locals in South Indian states either spoke their regional language or English, but not Hindi, which we were familiar with. This was a new experience for us as none of us had ever visited South Indian states before. Feeling nervous and puzzled about reaching our destination, we approached a few locals for directions. However, our attempts at communication were unsuccessful as they were unable to understand Hindi. We found ourselves in a bewildering situation and felt panicked.

Just then, a gentleman appeared and offered to help. He communicated with us in English and provided clear explanations of the route and destination. Thanks to his assistance, we were able to reach our destination smoothly. This experience taught us the importance of learning and improving our English-speaking skills, especially when traveling to new places where our native language may not be widely understood.

The power of language: How words shape people, culture

Speaking, writing and reading are integral to everyday life, where language is the primary tool for expression and communication. Studying how people use language – what words and phrases they unconsciously choose and combine – can help us better understand ourselves and why we behave the way we do.

Linguistics scholars seek to determine what is unique and universal about the language we use, how it is acquired and the ways it changes over time. They consider language as a cultural, social and psychological phenomenon.

“Understanding why and how languages differ tells about the range of what is human,” said Dan Jurafsky , the Jackson Eli Reynolds Professor in Humanities and chair of the Department of Linguistics in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford . “Discovering what’s universal about languages can help us understand the core of our humanity.”

The stories below represent some of the ways linguists have investigated many aspects of language, including its semantics and syntax, phonetics and phonology, and its social, psychological and computational aspects.

Understanding stereotypes

Stanford linguists and psychologists study how language is interpreted by people. Even the slightest differences in language use can correspond with biased beliefs of the speakers, according to research.

One study showed that a relatively harmless sentence, such as “girls are as good as boys at math,” can subtly perpetuate sexist stereotypes. Because of the statement’s grammatical structure, it implies that being good at math is more common or natural for boys than girls, the researchers said.

Language can play a big role in how we and others perceive the world, and linguists work to discover what words and phrases can influence us, unknowingly.

Cops speak less respectfully to black community members

Professors Jennifer Eberhardt and Dan Jurafsky, along with other Stanford researchers, detected racial disparities in police officers’ speech after analyzing more than 100 hours of body camera footage from Oakland Police.

How other languages inform our own

People speak roughly 7,000 languages worldwide. Although there is a lot in common among languages, each one is unique, both in its structure and in the way it reflects the culture of the people who speak it.

Jurafsky said it’s important to study languages other than our own and how they develop over time because it can help scholars understand what lies at the foundation of humans’ unique way of communicating with one another.

“All this research can help us discover what it means to be human,” Jurafsky said.

Stanford research explores novel perspectives on the evolution of Spanish

Using digital tools and literature to explore the evolution of the Spanish language, Stanford researcher Cuauhtémoc García-García reveals a new historical perspective on linguistic changes in Latin America and Spain.

Language as a lens into behavior

Linguists analyze how certain speech patterns correspond to particular behaviors, including how language can impact people’s buying decisions or influence their social media use.

For example, in one research paper, a group of Stanford researchers examined the differences in how Republicans and Democrats express themselves online to better understand how a polarization of beliefs can occur on social media.

“We live in a very polarized time,” Jurafsky said. “Understanding what different groups of people say and why is the first step in determining how we can help bring people together.”

“A national language represents the national identity of a country”

Asim Nawaz Abbassi

Beside a boundary, a name, a flag, or a currency, what makes a country become a respectable and unique nation is its national language.

Indeed, national language is a clear indicator that represents the national identity of a country. Language is a sensitive issue. It’s also part of a nation and a person’s heritage. To understand and penetrate deep into a community, one must be able to speak and understand the language of the community.  Fluency in the national language will surely enable the person to fully understand that community’s particular nuances and cultural aspects.

National language is a driving force behind unity of the nation’s people, and makes them distinct from other nations – provided you give your language respect.  Giving respect to your national language means that it should be one’s primary language, as well as the preferred source of communication at every level. One should know as many languages as one can absorb, but use one’s own language at every level.  History proves that every great leader tried his best to strengthen the national language. China’s revolutionary leader Zedong Mao had a great respect for his own language. Notwithstanding knowing many other languages, he never used them and preferred to use Chinese as his medium of communication. One can gauge the importance of a national language by the fact that Language Movement is considered to have laid the foundation for the separation of one part of Pakistan into Bangladesh.

But unfortunately the case is the opposite with Pakistan compared to most of the other Asian countries like India and Bangladesh.  The 1973 constitution of Pakistan promulgated Urdu to be the national language of Pakistan and set out the required arrangements to be made so that Urdu would be used for official and other purposes within 15 years of its commencement. Nevertheless, after the gap of more than 60 years, no specific arrangements have been made and no clear plan or policy has been devised to attain this constitutional goal. Parliament has not passed any law or formulated any policy to date to ensure the replacement of English by Urdu for official purposes.

Because of the Government’s lack of serious effort, the current generations are far from their national language. We can clearly observe a gradual increase in the number of elite youth whose command over all the required four skills for the Urdu language seems to be on a downward trend.  Instead, English is becoming the symbol of the upper class elite and an inaccurate benchmark by which one’s literacy is judged. The competitive examinations in Pakistan through which the bureaucracy of the country is filtered have a strong bottle neck because they use English to judge candidates’ competitiveness.

It made me astonished and dismayed while listening a lecture to learn that there is no nation in five thousand years that disrespected its own national language, and yet has excelled in economy and development with the help of some language other than its own. I am not against bilingualism, but we should be excellent in our national language. We witness many nations like Germany, China and Iran which love their language and literature and still are more developed and stronger than those which do not do so.

We communicate using spoken and written languages. An established language helps us communicate information to other people and express ourselves well.

There are many different languages that developed in different parts of the world and out of all these languages, English is one of the most important ones. This is because many countries in the world speak English and thus, English serves as a common language and helps us connect with people from other countries.

In this era of globalization, a language barrier can stagnate us and limit our growth. The knowledge of the English language helps us overcome that and facilitates international communication and business. Today, English is taught in most schools in India, if not as a first language then as a second language.

Even in countries where English is not a major language, people still learn the language because it opens doors to new career opportunities. It is important for people who want to study abroad in universities like Cambridge and Oxford to know fluent English. People who work in multinational companies also need to know English to be able to communicate well with others. English is a language that is spoken globally and has a lot of practical importance.

Human beings are social animals and communication is an important part of our daily lives. We communicate using spoken and written languages. An established language helps us communicate information to other people and express ourselves well. There are many different languages that developed in different parts of the world such as Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Odia, Malayalam and Kannada in India, Arabic in Arabia, Greek in Greece, French in France, Korean in Korea and English in England.

Because different parts of the world speak different languages, it is often difficult for people from different countries or regions to communicate with each other. And in this era of globalization, international communication and business, such language barriers can stagnate us and limit our growth.

Today, it is very important for us to have a common language that can help people from different parts of the world connect and communicate with each other. And the English language has risen to become such a language. In the past couple of hundred years, the British colonised many parts of Asia, Australia, Africa and the Americas.

The colonisers made the local people learn the English language. As dark as that past is, today, English has become a well-known language that is spoken across the world. Even within our own country, every state speaks a different language and it is difficult for a person from the south of India to understand a language spoken in the north of India. But English serves as a common language and facilitates communication.

Today, English is taught in most schools in India, if not as a first language then as a second language. Even in countries where English is not a major language, people still learn the language because it opens doors to new career opportunities.

Many people who know the language even work as translators for others who do not understand English. If one wants to work in a multinational company, knowing English is very important as it helps one communicate with colleagues from other countries. Many students dream of going to international universities like Cambridge University and Oxford University, and even for that purpose, being fluent in English is important.

Every language in this world has a lot of value and heritage attached to it. However, a language like English that is known and spoken globally has special and practical importance. It is important for us to learn the language well and become fluent in it. English is also a beautiful language and if one reads the works of English authors and poets, one is bound to fall in love with it.

Importance of English Language Essay 250 words

Essay in favor of importance of english language, [250 words].

English is an international language. Now we have to really acknowledge this reality. We, as individuals of a righteous nation, accept with full conviction and confidence all the modern realities that are on the way to our development.

And who can deny that it is in the power of recognizing and fulfilling the requirements of the times that we as a nation always reached the goal of prosperity and happiness?

Today the world has become a global one. Now people are watching the events of the whole world with their own eyes. From one corner to the other, things are happening as if they are sitting face to face. Now the demands of the times have changed.

Now let’s take a look at the realities of the times when English is not helping you. English developed you in science, medicine, psychology, or any other field of life.

So I think that English language education is also very important for us to achieve our targets or progress and development as a nation. Anyway, you know that no language is self-sufficient and learning English is necessary because, in order to move forward as a developed nation in the global and international community, we have to study English.

Take the latest example of countries nuclear explosion. By the grace of God, we got nuclear power thanks to the education of science, and in what language did we get this education of English. Today, countries have a place and significance in the international community.

Essay Against Importance of English Language [500 to 800 words]

I have tried to establish my national identity through my character only through verbal speeches and slogans.

Our forefathers sacrificed the greatness of their deeds and deeds with their blood in the martyrdom of love, but we careless and inactive people are getting lost like a flower in the dust of a cat. By turning away from religious values, the doors of progress are opening on their own.

Understanding theEnglish is leading us to progress. However, the recipe for reverse development is more suitable for such action that this education has taken us away from the greatest blessing, i.e religion of nature.

One of the basic principles of human psychology is the fact that if a child is burdened with a foreign language, his creative and mental abilities begin to wane and we have worked on it. So even though we are intelligent, we are left behind in the process of evolution. What is the reason that the one who gets good marks in every subject fails in English. ? Just because the language is not compatible with non-mental abilities. You can compare each year by looking at the list of other subjects and students who have failed in English. The same thing happened again and again and it’s Never-ending. If you look at the result gazette, you will see that what has failed is definitely a failure in English.

Does this prove that our children are suffering from some kind of mental retardation, God forbid? ? no way! These students may be prominent for their high performance in various fields in the field of education, but by making English compulsory, we have put chains on their feet. Which has sifted through their academic existence. Jean-Paul Sartre a well-known scholar of his time, had said.

“A nation that teaches in a foreign language lives in a rented house”. Watch now! That even while living in the homeland, the English tenants with a strange feeling of inferiority”.

Live in a house and ask the people living in rented houses.

What is there to living like this? It is a well-known fact that proud nations have won their national language as the title of their national identity, and that victory in life always belongs to those who are self-confident and trustworthy. This self-confidence is given by the love of one’s own language.

Take a look at the whole world after the example of China and Japan. Developed nations have continued the process of development by incorporating technology in their language and now approximately in all countries, all scientific and technical terms and youtube videos have been replaced in the local languages of the countries.

Despite this evidence, the fact that progress is impossible without English is untrue and I have no hesitation in saying so. In fact, he is grateful to his nation and its capabilities for striving for centuries. It has nothing to do with development because it is an obstacle in the process of development.

If it really develops us and we are determined to get a head start in the field instead of verbal promises. So know that it is necessary to get rid of non-language which is the biggest obstacle in the way of development but on the contrary, if we continue English and want to develop only on the strength of speeches then remember that the destiny of nations cannot be changed by just spoken speeches and images.

Our National Languages

Essay on Our National Languages

Our national languages should be at least two, Urdu and English if we want to progress well. It was a mistake of vast proportions not to give English the status of a national language in our Constitution.

Urdu will be able to grow and develop if it is used together with English in all fields of national life and activity. More and more English words and terms will join Urdu in new combinations as we embrace English with a fresh passion and will.

It is argued that other advanced countries like Japan, France, Germany, and Italy have their own national languages, which have caused their progress. It does not hold good at all in the case of English, as it is not foreign to us at all.

Firstly, the Urdu sentence has almost the same structure as the English sentence. Urdu is the nearest to English Secondly, a very large number of English words are already part of Urdu, and these are commonly used by all the people. Thirdly, English is already in use in all our offices, courts, educational institutions, trading centers, hospitals, communication networks, the mass media, etc. and even in many of our homes. All our professional work in medicine, engineering, aviation (flying), building construction, imports and exports, foreign affairs, etc. depends on English. The continuation of English as a national language is our need and is in our best interests.[the_ad id=”17141″]

Fourthly, everyone in the four provinces, Azad Kashmir and the northern and tribal areas can learn English at ease and in comfort. Everyone is proud of learning it, and rightly so.

Fifthly, English is a very convenient link language for all parts of the country, to bring them together like a loving mother, to make them work together in unity like a wise father and to bring all the knowledge and ways of the world home to them like an able teacher. English is – with us to promote our provincial and regional languages, too, in the friendly company of Urdu. Its existence as a uniting and cementing force will help in the evolution or development of a common culture.

Lastly, and most importantly, English is not a foreign language. According to modern research scholars, English is an Indo-Aryan language and has deep connections with Sanskrit. Urdu, Punjabi and some other regional languages of ours come from Sanskrit. Hindi and quite a few Indian languages arise out of Sanskrit. So, all in all, English is related to and connected with our languages like the palm joined to the fingers. It is, by all standards, our national language, part of our life and culture and a sure and safe means of our progress. It should be a declared national language, together with Urdu, when it already is a national language for all practical purposes.

Mother Tongue Essay in 400 Words

Mother tongue: a beautiful tapestry of words.

The concept of a mother tongue is, in many ways, like a vibrant tapestry, intricately woven over generations, representing our cultural heritage and identity. It is the language we first learn from our mothers, the language that nurtures our thoughts, and enables us to communicate our deepest emotions. In this descriptive essay, we will explore the power and beauty of the mother tongue, and how it shapes our understanding of the world around us.

A mother tongue is far more than just a means of communication. It is a rich reservoir of history and tradition, encapsulating the essence of a community’s collective experiences. Each language carries within it a unique cultural perspective, offering insights into lifestyle, values, and beliefs. For instance, in Chinese, the mother tongue of my ancestors, the concept of “Ren” emphasizes kindness and compassion, guiding individuals to foster harmonious relationships. Such nuanced cultural nuances are embedded deep within the mother tongue, reflecting the rich tapestry of human experiences.

Furthermore, the mother tongue serves as a conduit for familial bonds and traditions. It connects generations, transferring wisdom and knowledge from one to another. I recall sitting at my grandmother’s feet, listening to her eloquently narrate tales of our family’s history, dreams, and struggles, all in our native language. Through the mother tongue, these stories took on a life of their own, revealing a profound connection to our roots, and cultivating a strong sense of belonging.

Additionally, the mother tongue showcases the linguistic versatility and complexity of our world. Each language has its own rhythm, vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions. From the click sounds of the Xhosa language to the melodic cadence of Italian, every tongue weaves a distinct melody. The mother tongue captures the essence of a culture, expressing the joys, sorrows, and peculiarities of life in a way that transcends mere words. It evokes emotions that cannot be completely captured by another language, rendering each personal experience that much more vivid.

However, the mother tongue is not just a relic of the past. In an increasingly globalized world, it evolves and adapts, reflecting the changing times and embracing modern aspects. It assimilates new words, cultural influences, and concepts, forging a transition from traditional to contemporary. This amalgam of old and new breathes life into the language, enabling future generations to carry forward the torch of cultural heritage.

In conclusion, the mother tongue is a treasure trove of emotion, heritage, and identity. It conveys not only words but also the essence of a community’s values and traditions. It binds generations together and provides a unique lens through which to view the world. As individuals, we must recognize the importance of preserving and cherishing our mother tongues, for they are an integral part of our identities and allow us to weave together the colorful tapestry of human existence.

Mother Tongue Essay in 540 Words

Language is a fundamental aspect of human communication, acting as a medium through which we express our thoughts, emotions, ideas, and beliefs. It shapes our perspectives, influences our interactions, and forms the very foundation of our identities. In the grand tapestry of languages spoken across the globe, the concept of “mother tongue” holds a special place. This essay aims to explore the essence of the mother tongue, its significance in our lives, and its impact on our understanding of the world.

The mother tongue, also known as the first language or native language, refers to the language a person acquires naturally from birth or early childhood. It is the language spoken by their parents, family, and community, shaping their early memories and shaping their understanding of reality. For the majority of people, the mother tongue is synonymous with the language of their country or region. However, in multicultural societies, individuals may have multiple mother tongues due to their diverse linguistic backgrounds.

One of the most compelling aspects of the mother tongue lies in its ability to connect us to our roots and cultural heritage. It serves as a vessel that carries the vibrant traditions, customs, and folklore of our ancestors. Through our mother tongue, we gain access to the rich tapestry of our cultural identity, deepening our understanding of our own history and fostering a sense of belonging.

Moreover, proficiency and fluency in one’s mother tongue are instrumental in building strong interpersonal and familial relationships. The mother tongue enables individuals to express their thoughts and emotions with nuanced precision, fostering closer connections with their loved ones. It provides a sense of comfort and familiarity, enabling individuals to communicate freely without fear of misinterpretation or misunderstanding.

Conversely, the loss or neglect of one’s mother tongue can lead to a profound sense of disconnection and an identity crisis. Many individuals living in culturally diverse societies face the challenge of maintaining their mother tongue amidst the pressures to adopt the dominant language. As a consequence, a sense of alienation can arise, as one is unable to fully express their authentic self or connect deeply with their cultural heritage.

Furthermore, the mother tongue intertwines language and thought, shaping our cognitive processes, reasoning capabilities, and decision-making skills. A study by linguist Benjamin Lee Whorf proposed that language influences how we perceive and categorize the world around us. This theory, known as linguistic relativity or the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, suggests that different languages provide unique perspectives on reality, forcing speakers to perceive and conceptualize the world in distinct ways. Thus, the mother tongue not only impacts our personal lives but also molds our collective understanding of the world.

In conclusion, the mother tongue holds immense significance in our lives, serving as the cradle of our cultural identity and shaping our perception of the world. It connects us to our ancestral traditions, strengthens familial bonds, and fosters a sense of belonging. The mother tongue is not just a means of communication; it is a gateway to our roots, enabling us to embrace diversity, preserve our heritage, and forge deeper connections with those around us. Let us celebrate the beauty and power of our mother tongues, for they are the languages of the heart and soul.
