पानी के स्रोत

जल को कई जगह इकट्ठा कर सकते हैं और जल को कई जगह से ले भी जा सकते हैं जैसे कुआं, नदी, नहर, तालाब, जलाशय, कुंड, आदि जगह पर हम वर्षा के पानी को इकट्ठा करके बाद में भी इसका प्रयोग कर सकते हैं। 

वर्षा – वर्ष पानी का सबसे बड़ा स्त्रोत है। वर्षा से हमारी धरती के नीचे पानी जाता है। जिससे हमें पानी आसानी से मिल जाता है। आज वर्षा का पानी इकट्ठा करके बड़े-बड़े पानी के स्त्रोत बनाएं जा रहे हैं।

कुआं – पानी का सबसे अच्छा स्रोत माने जाने वाला कुआं है यहां बारिश का पानी भी इकट्ठा हो जाता है और ये पीने योग्य भी बना रहता है हमेशा ।

तालाब – तालाब में अक्सर बारिश का पानी ही इकट्ठा किया जाता है ताकि उसे खेत की सिंचाई के लिए इस्तेमाल किया जा सके या कमल जैसे फूल को उगाने में इसका प्रयोग किया जाता है सबसे ज्यादा।

हमारे जीवन में पानी की विशेषता

पानी हमारे रोजमर्रा की जिंदगी के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा बन चुका है। सफाई से लेकर खाना बनाने तक, कपड़े से लेकर, बर्तन साफ करने तक, नहाने से लेकर कार की धुलाई तक आदि जैसे चीजों के लिए हम आज पूरी तरह से पानी पर ही निर्भर है। यही कारण है कि हम दिन से लेकर रात तक हम खुद को पानी से चारों तरफ गिरा हुआ ही पाते हैं।

स्वच्छ जल हमारे देश के लिए आज एक महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दा बन चुका है। यही कारण है कि नल की जगह आज सभी अपने घरों में पीने के लिए फिल्टर या आरो का इस्तेमाल करने लगे हैं। स्वच्छ जल हमारे लिए बहुत उपयोगी है और स्वच्छ जल आज के युवाओं की पहली मांग बन चुकी है। जिसको देखते हुए बाजार में नए-नए तरह के उत्पाद और तकनीक को उतारा जा रहा है जिससे युवा वर्ग बहुत ज्यादा प्रभावित हो रहे हैं। उन्हें लगता है कि इन तकनीकों की विकास की वजह से हमें सस्ते में स्वच्छ जल उपलब्ध हो जाएगा।

पीने के पानी के लिए फिल्टर का यूज़

यदि हम पानी को इसी प्रकार बर्बाद करते रहे तो एक समय ऐसा आऐगा कि हमें पीने के लिए भी पानी नहीं मिलेगा। वर्तमान में भी बहुत से शहर ऐसे है जहाँ पर पानी का अभाव है। पानी के बिना पेड़ और वनस्पति भी नहीं होंगे इसलिए हमें पानी को बचाने की आवश्यकता है। हमें पानी को बर्बाद होने से भी बचाना है और साथ ही प्रदुषण मुक्त भी बनाना होगा। हमें पानी का सीमित मात्रा में प्रयोग करना चाहिए और चलते हुए नलों को बंद करना चाहिए। हमें वर्षा के पानी को भी संचय करना चाहिए और पानी को स्वच्छ करने का कर्तव्य करना चाहिए। नदियों में पूजा पाठ के नाम पर राख आदि को नहीं बहाना चाहिए। उद्योगों को नदियों से दूर लगाना चाहिए।

यदि हम पानी को इसी तरह बरबाद करते रहेंगे तो आने वाले समय में पानी के अभाव में ही तीसरा विश्व युद्ध होगा और बिना पानी के धरती पर भी जीवन समाप्त हो जाऐगा। पानी को बचाना कोई पारिवारिक या सामाजिक मुद्दा नहीं है बल्कि यह एक वैश्विक मुद्दा है और पूरे विश्व को मिलकर ही पानी को बचाना होगा। बच्चों को पानी की अहमियत को समझना चाहिए और पानी को बर्बाद करने की बजाय बचाना चाहिए।

पानी की बर्बादी के बारे में कोई सोचा नहीं है, जो अक्सर दोषपूर्ण पानी के नल, या हमारे घरों में पानी के लापरवाह संचालन के कारण होता है, हमारे दिमाग को उत्तेजित करता है हम अपने पहाड़ क्षेत्रों में पेड़ों को कम करने या औद्योगिक और घरेलू अपशिष्ट जल से निकलने वाली हमारी नदियों के प्रदूषण से पानी की आपूर्ति से जुड़े नहीं हैं। अगर केवल हम इन कारकों पर अधिक ध्यान दे सकते हैं, तो हम पानी की आपूर्ति में कटौती से बचने में सक्षम होंगे।

जल हमारा जीवन है क्योंकि इसके बिना मनुष्य, वनस्पति और पशुओं का कोई भी अस्तित्व नहीं है। पृथ्वी ही एकमात्र ऐसा ग्रह है जहाँ पर पानी पाया जाता है और उसी वजह से यहाँ पर जीवन संभव है। बिना पानी के जीवन की कल्पना भी नहीं की जा सकती है। हमारी पृथ्वी का 71 प्रतिशत हिस्सा पानी से ढका हुआ है जिसमें से स्वच्छ जल केवल 0.97 प्रतिशत ही है। पानी सो ही जीवन का आधार है।

जल का प्रयोग-

हम प्रतिदिन विभिन्न क्रियकलापों के लिए पानी का प्रयोग करते हैं।

1. पीने के लिए स्वच्छ जल- हर व्यक्ति प्रतिदिन 2 लीटर पानी पीता है जिससे उसकी प्यास बुझती है और शरीर को भी सही तरह से कार्य करने के लिए पानी की आवश्यकता होती है। 2. स्वच्छता के लिए जल- हम प्रतिदिन स्नान करने, अपने शरीर की सफाई करने और घरों की सफाई करने के लिए पानी का प्रयोग करते है। 3. कपड़े धोने के लिए- हमें अपने कपड़ो को स्वच्छ और साफ सुथरा रखने के लिए पानी का ही प्रयोग करना पड़ता है। 4. वनस्पति के लिए-  वनस्पति को उगने के लिए और पेड़ पौधों के विकास के लिए भी पानी की ही आवश्यकता होती है। 5. मनोरंजन के लिए- पानी का प्रयोग मनोरंजन के लिए भी किया जाता है। ज्यादातर लोग छुट्टियों में नौका विहार, रिवर राफ्टिंग आदि गतिविधियों में भाग लेते है। 6. नलिकाओं के लिए- गलियों और नालियों मों से कूड़ा करकट बहाने के लिए भी पानी का ही प्रयोग किया जाता है। 7. बिजली के लिए- बड़ी बड़ी नदियों पर बाँध बनाकर पानी का प्रयोग बिजली उत्पन्न करने के लिए भी किया जाता है। 8. भोजन के लिए- भोजन को बनाने के लिए पानी की आवश्यकता होती है और पानी से बहुत से स्वादिष्ट पेय पदार्थ भी बनाए जाते है। 9. सौंदर्य के लिए-  पानी सही मात्रा में पीने से सौंदर्य को भी बढ़ाया जा सकता है। इसे झुरियाँ खत्म होती है और मोटापा भी कम होता है। 10. आग बुझाने के लिए- जब कभी भी कहीं पर भी आग लगती है तो उस पर पानी डालकर ही काबू पाया जाता है। 11. जमीन के लिए- जल जलक्रीय करता है जिसमें यह भाप बनकर उड़ जाता है और बादल बनकर बरसता है। वह वर्षा जमीन की उपजाऊ शक्ति को बनाए रखती है। 12. मछली पालन- मछलियाँ बिना जल के जीवित नहीं रह सकती है इसलिए उनके पालन के लिए पानी की आवश्यकता होती है और मछली पालन बहुत से लोगों का रोजगार है। 13. उद्योग-  उद्योगों में भी विभिन्न तरह के क्रियकलापों के लिए जल की आवश्यकता होती 14. यातायात-  जहाजों के द्वारा यातायात और सामान भेजने के लिए पानी का ही उपयोग किया जाता है।

हम अपनी दैनिक दिनचर्या में बहुत से कार्यों के लिए पानी पर निर्भर है और पानी के बिना हमारा जीवन असंभव है। हम सबको पानी का सही तरीके से सीमित मात्रा में प्रयोग करना चाहिए क्योंकि जल है तो कल है। हमें जल का दुरूपयोग नहीं करना चाहिए और इसे बर्बाद होने से बचाना चाहिए।

हम सभी यह कहावत जानते हैं कि जल अनमोल है। जल इतना कीमती है कि पृथ्वी पर उपलब्ध कुल जल में से केवल 1% ही पीने योग्य है। एक औसत इंसान को प्रतिदिन लगभग 250- 400 लीटर पानी की आवश्यकता होती है। इसके अतिरिक्त, हमारा शरीर 70% पानी से बना है, इसलिए प्रतिदिन 2-3 लीटर ताजे पानी की आवश्यकता होती है। आम तौर पर यह कहा जाता है कि एक इंसान बिना पानी के तीन दिन तक जीव‍ित रह सकता है। हालांकि यह किसी किसी के लिए दो दिन से एक सप्‍ताह का हो सकता है। लेकिन आम तौर पर कहा जाता है कि इंसान हवा यानी ऑक्सीजन के बिना तीन मिनट, पानी के बिना 3 दिन और खाने के बिना तीन हफ्ते तक जिंदा रह सकता है।

एक सदी पहले, मनुष्यों की जरूरतों को पूरा करने के लिए पर्याप्त जल था, लेकिन जैसे-जैसे आबादी बढ़ी, मांग काफी बढ़ गई, जिससे 25% लोगों के पास ताजे पानी तक पहुंच नहीं रह गई। यदि जल प्रदूषण के साथ-साथ जल के उपयोग की ये प्रवृत्तियाँ जारी रहीं, तो जल्द ही हमारे पास मीठे पानी के भंडार ख़त्म हो सकते हैं, जिससे हर साल लाखों लोगों की मृत्यु हो सकती है।

जल की कमी कई कारणों से होती है।

उनमें से एक है हमारे घरों और उद्योगों में पानी का व्यापक उपयोग।

दूसरा, कारखानों द्वारा जल निकायों में डाले गए अनुपचारित पानी के कारण होने वाला जल प्रदूषण हो सकता है। कृषि प्रौद्योगिकियों में बदलाव और उर्वरकों के व्यापक उपयोग ने जल निकायों में प्रवेश कर उन्हें प्रदूषित कर दिया है और उन्हें नियमित उपयोग के लिए अनुपयुक्त बना दिया है।

प्रस्तावना Introduction (जल के महत्व पर निबंध – 1000 Words)

मनुष्य जीवन में जल का बहुत बड़ा महत्व है। जल के बिना कुछ भी संभव नहीं है। जल के बिना मनुष्य के जीवन की कल्पना तक नहीं की जा सकती है। पृथ्वी पर जल पाया जाता है इसलिए इसे ब्रह्मांड का एक अनोखा ग्रह कहा जाता है। जल के कारण ही आज मनुष्य जाति पृथ्वी पर विकसित हो सकी है। मनुष्य, पशुओं, पेड़-पौधों सभी को जल की जरूरत है।

यदि पृथ्वी से जल समाप्त हो जाए तो कोई भी जीव जंतु जीवित नहीं रह पाएंगे क्योंकि सभी जीव जंतु जल का उपयोग करते हैं। यह चिंता का विषय है कि मनुष्य ने अपनी व्यवसायिक गतिविधियों के द्वारा पृथ्वी पर पाए जाने वाले जल को संकट में डाल दिया है।

पृथ्वी के 78% भाग पर महासागर पाए जाते हैं जिनमें नमकीन जल मिलता है परंतु यह पीने के योग्य नहीं होता है। पीने योग्य जल को मीठा जल या मीठा पानी कहते हैं। पृथ्वी पर मौजूद कुल जल में से 2.7 प्रतिशत जल ही पीने योग्य है।

मनुष्य जीवन मे जल का महत्व Importance of water in human life

मनुष्य के लिए जल बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। बिना भोजन किए मनुष्य 7 दिनों तक जीवित रह सकता है पर बिना जल पिए वह 3 दिन में ही मर जाएगा। हम सभी लोगों को प्यास लगती हैं और प्यास बुझाने के लिए जल का प्रयोग करते हैं।

स्वस्थ रहने के लिए एक व्यक्ति को प्रतिदिन कम से कम 2 से 3 लीटर पानी का सेवन करना चाहिए। प्यास लगने पर जब पानी नहीं मिलता है तो बड़ी बेचैनी अनुभव होती है। इससे ही जल का महत्व पता चलता है।

मनुष्य के लिए जल ही जीवन है। हमें जल का संरक्षण करना चाहिए क्योंकि पृथ्वी से जल तेजी से विलुप्त हो रहा है। मनुष्य की व्यवसायिक गतिविधियों ने आज पीने लायक जल को संकट में डाल दिया है। बड़ी-बड़ी फैक्ट्रियों द्वारा प्रदूषण फैलाया जा रहा है।

रासायनिक कचरे को नदियों झीलों तालाबों में बहाया जा रहा है जिससे जल दूषित हो रहा है। हमें इसे रोकने के लिए मजबूत कदम उठाने होंगे।

स्वस्थ रहने के लिए जल का महत्व Importance of water to stay healthy

मनुष्य के शरीर में 65 से 80% तक जल पाया जाता है। रक्त में 7% जल होता है। स्वस्थ रहने के लिए हमें साफ और शुद्ध जल का सेवन करना चाहिए। दूषित जल पीने से पीलिया, गैस, संक्रामक रोग, चेचक , पेचिश, दस्त जैसी बीमारियां हो जाती हैं। दस्त के रोग में शरीर में पानी की मात्रा कम हो जाती है। इसलिए ओआरएस (ORS) का घोल रोगी को दिया जाता है।

जल को साफ करने के लिए उसमें ब्लीचिंग पाउडर, फिटकरी डाली जाती है। यदि जल दूषित हो तो उसे उबालना चाहिए, जिससे उसके सभी बैक्टीरिया मर जायें। जल को साफ कपड़े से छानकर पीना चाहिए।

जल का महत्व हम जितनी जल्दी समझ जाएँ हमारे लिए उतना अच्छा है और जल संरक्षण के प्रयास हमें अब शुरू करने की आवश्यकता है। धरती पर सीमित जल-भंडार को बचाने के लिए आज सभी को जल संरक्षण की ओर अपना ध्यान आकृष्ट करने की जरूरत है। 

जल संरक्षण पर निबंध ( 200 शब्द) 

एक तरफ धरती पर साफ पीने लायक पानी धीरे-धीरे कम हो रहा है तो वहीं दूसरी तरफ हम किसी ना किसी कारणवश धरती के अमूल्य जल को बर्बाद कर रहे हैं। यदि ऐसा ही चलता रहा तो वो दिन दूर नहीं जब धरती पर पीने लायक पानी बचेगा ही नहीं। हमारी धरती पर 70% भूभाग जल का है लेकिन मात्र 1 प्रतिशत जल ही ऐसा है जो मानव अपने उपयोग में ले सकता है, बाकी का अधिकांश जल समुद्र का खारा पानी है और बर्फ़ीला है।

जल संरक्षण आज बहुत जरूरी हो गया है। अपने रोजिंदा जीवन में जिस प्रकार हम जल का दुरुपयोग करते हैं उस पर रोक लगाने की जरूरत है। दुनिया के कई देश जल की भारी कमी का सामना कर रहे हैं। भारत के कई राज्यों में लोगों को पानी के लिए दूर–दूर तक जाना पड़ता है।

जल का हम सही उपयोग करें और जल के स्त्रोतों को बढ़ाएं तो पानी की समस्या से हम निजात पा सकते हैं। जल का संरक्षण करने के लिए हमें बरसात के पानी का संग्रह करना चाहिए, नदियों और अन्य पानी के स्त्रोत को प्रदूषित नहीं करना चाहिए और साथ ही साथ अपने रोजिंदा जीवन में जल का सदुपयोग करना चाहिए।

दूसरा कदम जल संरक्षण के लिए हम यह उठा सकते हैं की बरसात के जल का अधिक से अधिक संग्रह करना। बरसात के मौसम मे वर्षा का साफ जल यूं ही बर्बाद हो जाता है अतः इस जल का हमें संग्रह करना होगा। वर्षा के जल का संग्रह करने के लिए जगह-जगह छोटे-छोटे तालाब और जलाशय हम बना सकते हैं।

तीसरा काम हम ये कर सकते हैं वो यह की अपने नदी, तालाब, जलाशय को साफ रखना। जी हाँ, यदि हम नदी, तालाब आदि में प्रदूषण न करें और उन्हें शुद्ध रखें तो उनका आस्तित्व बना रहेगा। नदियों का जल हमारे लिए पानी का सबसे बड़ा स्त्रोत है अतः उनका संरक्षण हमें जरूर करना चाहिए।

इसके उपरांत वनों को कटाई पर भी रोक लगनी चाहिए क्यूंकी बरसात को लाने के पीछे वृक्षों का योगदान महत्वपूर्ण होता है अतः अधिक से अधिक वृक्ष लगाकर जंगलों को बढ़ाना चाहिए।

धरती पर जल संरक्षण के लिए सभी लोगों को जागरूक होने की आवश्यकता है क्यूंकी सबसे अधिक पानी की बरबादी हम अपने घरों में अलग-अलग कार्यों को करने में करते हैं। जल अब सीमित मात्रा में ही बचा है अतः जितनी जल्दी हम जल संरक्षण की आदत को अपनाएं उतना हमारे लिए अच्छा है।

जल संरक्षण में पीने लायक ताजे पानी के संसाधन का रक्षण करना और वर्तमान और भविष्य में जल की मांग को पूरा करने के लिए सभी नीतियों और गतिविधियों को शामिल किया गया है। जन संख्या वृद्धि, घरेलू उपयोग और अंधा धुंध विकास के कारण पानी का उपयोग जरूरत से ज्यादा बढ़ा है। जलवायु परिवर्तन के कारण भी जल की कमी की समस्या को बढ़ा दिया है।

आज ऐसी पहल की आवश्यकता है जो धरती पर जल को बचा सके और उसका भविष्य के लिए संरक्षण कर सके। विश्व के सभी देशों ने जल संरक्षण के लिए कदम उठाए हैं। भारत में भी जल के संसाधनों जैसे की नदियों, तालाबों, जलाशयों आदि को बचाया जा रहा है, उन्हें साफ किया जा रहा है। पानी का संग्रह किया जा रहा है ताकि आपने वाली पीढ़ी को हम जल संकट से बचा सकें।

• जल संरक्षण में एक रणनीति वर्षा जल संचयन है। तालाबों, झीलों, नहरों का निर्माण करना, पानी के जलाशय का विस्तार करना वर्षा जल संचयन के विभिन्न तरीके हैं। इससे भूगर्भ जल भी बढ़ेगा और जल संचय भो होगा।
• भूगर्भ जल के संरक्षण पर उचित कदम उठाने की जरूरत है।
• घरों में पानी के मीटर लगाने की जरूरत है जिससे लोगों को पानी का महत्व समझ में आएगा और पानी का दुरुपयोग बंद होगा।
• खेतों में सिंचाई के लिए टपक पद्धति और फुवारे का उपयोग करने से पानी को बचा सकते हैं।
• घर में नहाने, बर्तन धोने, शौचालय आदि में ढेर सारा पानी इस्तेमाल किया जाता है अतः वहाँ हमें समझदारी से पानी का उपयोग करना चाहिए
• वनों की कटाई के कारण वर्षा पर भी प्रभाव पड़ता है अतः वनों की कतयो रोककर उनका विस्तार बढ़ाना चाहिए

इस प्रकार के कई कदम हैं जो हम जल संरक्षण के लिए उठा सकते हैं। सबसे जरूरी है जागरूकता जिसका अभाव लोगों को जल का महत्व नहीं समझा पाता। अतः एक सामजिक जागरूकता भी जरूरी है।

पानी के संरक्षण में असफल होने से पानी की पर्याप्त आपूर्ति की कमी हो सकती है, जिसके कठोर परिणाम हो सकते हैं। इनमें पानी की लागत बढ़ना, कम खाद्य आपूर्ति, स्वास्थ्य संबंधी खतरे और राजनीतिक संघर्ष शामिल हैं।

जल की कमी के कारण पर्यावरण का संतुलन भी बिगड़ेगा और वन, उपवन, वन्य जीव आदि पर संकट आ सकता है, अतः जल संरक्षण जरूरी है।

जल पूरी जीवसृष्टि के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है और धरती पर इसका सीमित स्त्रोत हमें इस बात की ओर प्रेरित करता है की हम जल संरक्षण की ओर ध्यान दें, अन्यथा हमारी आने वाली पीढ़ी को पीने के लिए एक बूंद जल के लिए भी संघर्ष करना पड़ेगा।

जल संरक्षण कैसे करे?

ऐसे बहुत से तरीके हैं जिनको अपनाकर हम जल का संरक्षण कर सकते हैं। यदि हम जल का सीमित उपयोग करें और उसे बचाने के लिए उचित कदम उठाएँ तो जल का सीमित भंडार लंबे समय तक बना रह सकता है।

वर्षा के पानी का संग्रह करना –  वर्षा के जल का संग्रह ना करना हमारी सबसे बड़ी भूल है। आज भी वर्षा का साफ पानी समुद्र, गटर, नालियों में बह जाता है और व्यर्थ हो जाता है। इस पानी का यदि हम संग्रह करें तो हर साल जो जल संकट हमें देखना पड़ता है उससे राहत मिल सकती है। बरसात के जल को हम नहर, तालाब, जलाशय, कुंड आदि बनाकर संग्रहीत कर सकते हैं। इस संग्रहीत किए जल का उपयोग हम घर के उपयोग, उद्योगों और कृषि कार्यों में कर सकते हैं। हम गावों, शहरों के आसपास तालाब बना सकते हैं, विशाल नहरों का निर्माण कर पानी के संकट वाले क्षेत्रों को राहत पहुंचा सकते हैं।

भूगर्भ जल का रक्षण – भूगर्भ जल अर्थात जमीन के अंदर स्थित जल जो की हम कुवों, हैंडपंप आदि से निकालते हैं। अधिक भूगर्भ जल निकालने के कारण और उसका दुरुपयोग होने के कारण भूगर्भ जल में भी कमी आती है। भूगर्भ जल का हमें रक्षण करना चाहिए। तालाब, जलाशय आदि बनाने से भूगर्भ जल का स्तर बढ़ता है। भूमि प्रदूषण भी रोकने की आवश्यकता है क्यूंकी उसके कारण भूगर्भ जल दूषित होता है।

दैनिक कार्यों में जल का सही उपयोग – सबसे अधिक पानी का उपयोग यदि कहीं किया जाता है तो वो है घरेलू कार्यों में। हम अपने रोजिंदा जीवन में बड़ी मात्रा में पानी का दुरुपयोग करते हैं, क्यूंकी हम इस बात से अंजान होते हैं की यह जल सीमित मात्रा में ही धरती पर उपलब्ध है।

नहाने में, कपड़े व बर्तन धोने में, वाहनों को धोने के लिए, त्योहारों के समय, घर की साफ-सफाई के समय आदि ऐसे बहुत से कार्य हैं जिनमें हम पानी को बर्बाद करते हैं। यदि हम अपनी जवाबदारी को समझकर पानी का सदुपयोग करें तो काफी हद तक जल संरक्षण में अपना योगदान हम दे सकते हैं।

• हमेशा नल को कसकर बंद करें ताकि उनमें से पानी ना बर्बाद हो।
• अपने नल के अंदर और आसपास किसी भी लीक की तुरंत मरम्मत करें। (एक रिसाव से प्रति वर्ष कई हजार लीटर पानी बर्बाद हो सकता है।)
• अपने पानी के उपयोग को कम करने के लिए अपने नल पर एक जलवाहक या पानी के प्रवाह को कम करने वाले लगाव का उपयोग करें।
• बर्तन धोते समय कभी भी लगातार पानी न चलाएं।
• ब्रश करते समय, जब आप वास्तव में ब्रश कर रहे हों तो पानी बंद कर दें। (यह सामान्य रूप से उपयोग किए जाने वाले पानी का लगभग 80% बचाता है।)
• लो-फ्लश शौचालय स्थापित करके आप पानी के उपयोग को 40% से 50% तक कम कर सकते हैं
• लॉन और उद्यानों को गर्म मौसम के दौरान प्रतिदिन केवल 5 मिलीमीटर पानी की आवश्यकता होती है। वसंत, पतझड़ या शांत मौसम के दौरान कम पानी की आवश्यकता होती है अतः उस समय पानी कम इस्तेमाल करें।

Dal Is the Ultimate Comfort Food

Cheap, unfussy and adaptable, these lentils call up warming memories of home and family for many South Asians.

One of my favorite Hindi terms is “ghar ka khaana.” It literally means “home food,” but it also encompasses the singular joy and unfussiness of meals made in your own kitchen — the dishes that remind you of childhood, the ones you won’t often find in restaurants.

My quintessential ghar ka khaana? Dal.

Recipe: Everyday Dal

To make dal feels like an alchemical feat, watching the pebbly lentils turn creamy, starchy and golden with turmeric. I love the sizzle of the hot, spiced ghee when it is poured into the lentils, the way that dal envelops a bowl of rice like a hug. The first time I published my mother’s recipes for dal in my cookbook, “ Indian-ish ,” it felt as if I was letting people in on a secret — a solution to their weeknight dinner woes, courtesy of my ancestors.

Across South Asia and its diaspora, dal — which refers to both the legumes and the finished dish — is inherently linked to comfort, whether simmered with coconut milk, sweetened with a little jaggery or topped with crisp curry leaves.

In interviews, many people said it was the first food they fed to their children. The meal they missed most when they went off to college. The dish they break Ramadan fasts with. The first thing they learned to cook from their mother, who insisted on providing preparation times in whistles of a pressure cooker rather than minutes.

“Almost all of us have positive associations with dal because we grew up being fed dal,” said Sarah Thankam Matthews, an Indian American novelist living in Brooklyn. “Part of it is the emotional association of being fed something, and then there is the essential nature of what it is as a dish: warm, goopy and nourishing.”

Aisha Saeed, the Pakistani American author of the children’s book “ Bilal Cooks Daal ,” said that during her college days, dal was “my version of ramen” — cheap, filling and hard to mess up.

Ms. Saeed, who lives in Atlanta, didn’t realize just how widely beloved dal was until she published her book in 2019 and received hundreds of notes from students and parents who were overjoyed to see their childhood dish memorialized in literature.

The recipe for dal is endlessly flexible. Mo Sherifdeen, a travel marketer in Portland, Ore., who is Sri Lankan American, has added ketchup to his to temper the spiciness. I’ve added sliced garlic to mine, or let the lentils thicken to the texture of refried beans and stuffed them in a tortilla. But it’s my mother’s simplest, 15-minute version — which requires just masoor dal (red lentils), turmeric, ghee, cumin seeds, asafetida and chile powder — that I find the most satisfying.

The method may vary, but the emotions it evokes are the same.

“When I am sad or when I am crying or when I am upset, I will have a bowl of dal and rice,” said Nithya Ruff, an Indian American technology executive in Raleigh, N.C. “You can train the palate at childhood, and that is what you associate with comfort. Anything you pick up after you grow up — it never takes that same status.”

Throughout my childhood, our family traveled often because of my mother’s job in the airline business. No matter where we were — and no matter how much we loved the food there — my father would eventually crave dal. Toward the end of the vacation, he’d retrieve the packets of instant dal in his suitcase, boil water in our hotel room and make himself a bowl.

I used to make fun of him. But now I’ve adopted a similar ritual for each time I return from a trip. Before I even unpack, I simmer lentils and make rice. And as I take my first bite, the thought is always the same: Was there ever anything as delicious as dal?

Trump selling Bibles may be desperation – but that shouldn’t cheer anyone up

Donald Trump is a Bible salesman now

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth and, of course, Donald John Trump. The former US president, as we all know, and as he has repeatedly told us, is God’s gift to humanity. He’s basically Jesus … if Jesus were a blond sexual predator from Queens.

As if there were ever any doubt that Trump – who has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 25 women and is facing 34 criminal charges for paying hush money to an adult film star – is a pious man, he is now hawking Bibles. Earlier this week, the presumptive Republican nominee made headlines for endorsing a patriotic version of the Bible. “Happy Holy Week! Let’s Make America Pray Again,” Trump said as he announced his latest scheme. You can get your hands on the book – the only version endorsed by Trump – for just $59.99 through a website, GodBlessTheUSABible.com.

Where are all the proceeds going? Good question. An FAQ on the site clarifies that Trump is not selling the Bible directly but states that “GodBlessTheUSABible.com uses Donald J Trump’s name, likeness and image under paid license from CIC Ventures LLC”. CIC Ventures is a company that Trump reported owning in his 2023 financial disclosure. In short: it looks like he is getting royalties from the arrangement.

Trump’s superpower is the fact he has absolutely no shame whatsoever; the cash-strapped candidate will do whatever it takes to make a buck. He’s capitalized on his legal troubles by selling merchandise with his mugshot on it , for example. A couple of years ago, he was peddling digital trading cards depicting him dressed up as a superhero. (“Only $99 each!”) Earlier this year, he launched his own sneaker brand , selling Never Surrender High-Tops for $399. While shopping for the shoes, you could also pick up Trump-branded Victory47 cologne and perfume for $99 a bottle. Then, of course, there’s Truth Social: the Twitter clone Trump launched in 2022 .

All of these recent business ventures have inspired much mockery. Despite the copious jokes, however, Trump has always somehow managed to get the last laugh. His digital trading card selection sold out in less than a day, netting $4.5m in sales . His sneakers also sold out hours after launch. As for loss-making Truth Social? That went public on Tuesday and quickly achieved a valuation of almost $8bn .

Selling Bibles, of course, is rather different from selling sneakers or trading cards. Might this be a bridge too far for Trump’s followers?

There has certainly been some criticism of the venture from conservatives. Commentator Charlie Sykes, for example, slammed him for “commodifying the Bible during Holy Week”. However, others on the right are singing the Trump Bible’s praises. “From a Christian perspective, this is one of the the greatest spiritual moments in US history,” Tulsa preacher Jackson Lahmeyer told Real America’s Voice , a rightwing news network.

All in all, it’s unlikely that the white evangelical Christians who are Trump’s most passionate followers care about the hypocrisy of Trump selling Bibles. These people don’t actually labour under the delusion that their hero is a man of God. They just know he’s a useful means to an end. A Pew Research Center report released earlier this month found: “Most people who view Trump positively don’t think he is especially religious himself. But many think he stands up for people with religious beliefs like theirs.” In other words: they don’t care if Trump personally practices what they preach; they just want him to legislate in a way that means others are forced to follow these practices.

This isn’t to say that the Bible venture is some sort of genius strategy by Trump. It is, as many people have pointed out , clearly something of a desperate move by a man who is having trouble fundraising and who knows that if he’s not headed to the White House he may be headed to jail. “Donald Trump is weak and desperate – both as a man and a candidate for president,” James Singer, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, crowed on Monday. Trump may well be desperate, but that shouldn’t cheer anyone up – least of all the Biden campaign. Few things are more dangerous than a desperate man with nothing to lose.
