Definition Essay on Success

The definition of success differs from one person to another. Most people work hard throughout their lives to achieve success. That might mean acquiring an education, being able to take care of one’s family, achieving all life’s ambitions, or making money that would be enough to live happily.

One interesting view about success is that it means something different to each person. At the same time, perceptions of success can be faulty. Someone may seem to be successful, but scandals and ruins can easily follow if a person has made poor choices to achieve his ideal of success.

A lot of people tend to confess that the people they once considered very successful in life turned out to be rather miserable. Some of the individuals who are successful, especially when measured in terms of material wealth, are often afraid of other people trying to take advantage of them. Basically, one common observation in life is that it is difficult, if not impossible, to be successful in every aspect of life. In most cases, one can be successful in one part of life and be a total failure in another.

When one is looking for success , it is important to concentrate on one’s strengths rather than pursuing goals in those areas where you are not going to enjoy a certain degree of achievement. There are many areas in our lives that we generally consider important.

These include the self, business, family, environment, material things, community, work, spirituality, and friends. In order to be truly successful, one needs to balance each of these areas. It is rather obvious that these areas cannot be of equal importance to everyone. That is why people tend to work towards being successful in some areas in their lives while neglecting the other areas. It is, however, not a good idea to ignore any of these parts even though it is important to set priorities.

Even when you decide to focus on your strengths, it is important to strive to improve in other areas as well. In other words, people have to make every effort to have a well-balanced life. For instance, if one works hard towards being successful and ends up becoming a workaholic, one may lose friends and family.

In the long run, one may end up damaging his health or overall well-being. One should always try to keep each of the components of his life in harmony with each other. In other words, to become a happy and successful person, you have to find out what motivates you – what it is that you’d love to achieve not only for yourself but your family as well. Consider what you value most in all areas of life – emotional, spiritual, and material. That’s what will definitely make you happy. If you don’t happen to do it, you are not going to be happy.

It’s impossible to prescribe a single ultimate definition of success. The true definition of success essay will differ from one person to another depending on their goals, thought processes, and what makes them happy. Some define success as acquiring an education, being able to take care of one’s family, achieving all life’s ambitions, or making money that would be enough to live happily. Others consider living a life full of joy and love with family as the real measure of success. Once a person understands what is important to them on a personal level, it becomes easy to identify the goals and visions that lead to a successful life. The opposite of success is failure, which happens when one fails to accomplish certain objectives. While most people seek success in life, not everyone understands what the status is all about or how to achieve it. Success is when you accomplish a purpose or goal.

A faulty perception of success can lead to poor choice and failure. Although success is a personal view, achieving it requires careful consideration of the strategies to achieve it. Some people confess that the people they once considered very successful in life turned out to be rather miserable. Some of the individuals who are successful, especially when measured in terms of material wealth, are often afraid of other people trying to take advantage of them.

Others make poor decisions in their quest to attain success, leading to lack of inspiring ideas in a definition of success essay. One common observation in life is that it is difficult, if not impossible, to be successful in every aspect of life. In most cases, one can be successful in one part of life and be a total failure in another. To accomplish something big, such as winning a game, passing an exam, or getting a promotion, it’s important to set high standards and continue striving to achieve your goals. Thus, the difference between success and failure lies in optimism and a mentality of not settling for less.

To look for elements that define success in one’s life , concentrate on individual strengths rather than pursuing goals in areas with less degree of achievement attached to them. Some areas that people consider important in life include family, self, business, material things, environment, work, friends, community and spirituality. True success is achieved at a personal level when one finds a balance in all these important areas of their life. Still, real success doesn’t mean pursuing equal achievements in all these areas of life because some areas will always be more important than others. According to this success definition essay, achieving a good balance requires investing more in areas with a high sense of achievement attached to them without completely neglecting the other areas. Finding the perfect balance of success in life requires setting priorities.

In addition to focusing on your strengths, success requires going beyond expectations. Limitations only hinder a person from learning and improving. Sometimes, the path to success requires accepting correction and using criticism as a stepping stone to improve oneself. Other times, success requires skill development and pushing oneself to the limits. Challenges are part of the process to achieve success, but giving up or settling should not be an option.

Happiness and success in life is attached to what motivates a person. Consider the most valuable areas of life, such as emotional, spiritual, and material elements, and set goals to improve them. If one works towards success in the most meaningful areas of their life, they will attain true success. Overall, the process of becoming successful starts with identifying a person’s idea of success, identifying strengths, and setting elaborate goals. Success has a unique definition for each person depending on the areas of life that they consider as the most important. To avoid failure, set standards, visions, and goals that guide the decision-making processes. Pursue areas of strength rather than concentrating on areas in which no success value is attached to them. Success requires finding a perfect balance between competing areas of life. Most times, reaching success goals requires going beyond expectations. Remember that success is the consequence of achieving several accomplishments.

Definition Essay Writing: 10 Easy Tips

Don’t choose a simple and obvious term that doesn’t require profound research. Choose a term or concept that you understand but also leaves room for creativity. That way, you can craft a unique definition that impresses the reader. Don’t refer to phrases in the dictionary. Instead of copy pasting standard dictionary definitions, try to focus on providing a system that helps the reader to understand your own definition of what is being discussed. Refer to functions and structure. An effective strategy for writing good success definition essay examples is to explain the structure and functions related to the term. Also, you can develop a definition by specifying the opposite of what the word means.

Avoid passive voice in the thesis statement. Passive voice can create awkward sentences and make it hard to determine whether the definition in the thesis is yours or borrowed from research. Provide the origin and history of the term. Since language has existed for many centuries, you’re likely to find some useful historical information about the concept or term. Also, discuss evolutions in the meaning of the word if any. Including historical data can make a definition essay more credible and informative.

Include transitions. Transitions improve the flow of ideas in an essay. Don’t forget to add them in between paragraphs to connect ideas. Have the audience in mind. Think about the readers when writing to ensure that all parts of the text will be clear and interesting to them. Don’t repeat one definition more than once in the text. Use examples. Add comments and explanations to examples provided in body paragraphs to demonstrate to the reader that you understand how to write an academic success definition essay. If a term has a broad meaning, narrow it down. Certain words would require many pages to cover all potential definitions. For example, the definition of the word ‘love’ is too broad to cover in a single page. However, narrowing it down to ‘self-Love’ makes it easy to craft a good definition essay. Edit, edit, edit. Eliminate any grammatical errors and lexical mistakes by taking a fresh look at your writing. Also, confirm that your sources are cited correctly and listed accordingly in a list of references. If possible, ask someone to look through your paper and make comments.

Success: How Do You Define It? Essay

Introduction.

Success is a word that all the human beings use a number of times during their social life. It is been used, discussed and researched frequently by the social scientists and psychologists. In this world so many people have been trying hard for success, many are achieving success, and others are not fortunate. They are doomed and buried in their endeavors to accomplish success. Many unfortunate have been perusing success for long years, but some are getting it almost suddenly without much hard work. Success is the very concept upon which many wars have been fought between countries and many innocent were killed.

Success to one man may be the dominion over another; to another man it may be his internal gratification. Often we consider the word success as the binary opposite of failure, and success of a person is measured largely based on the failure of someone else. Since all the words are only symbols and meaning is added to it later by general consensus, the word success also gets several meanings according to the context in which it is used.

The meaning of Success

The etymology of the word success says that it is derived from the Latin word ‘successus’ which means ‘an advance, succession, happy outcome’, and it is first recorded in 1586 (*5). The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines the term success as “the achievement of a desired aim, or of fame, wealth or social position” (*1). Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary gives the definition “favorable or desired outcome; also: the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence” (*2) Other dictionaries define success as “The achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted [or] The gaining of fame or prosperity” (*3), “An event that accomplishes its intended purpose”, “A state of prosperity or fame” (*4) etc. so, all the dictionary meanings directs us to the meaning that success is achieving something; that may be money, fame or prosperity.

Many of the successful men in the world have endeavored to define the term success. Bessie Stanley defines success as follows:

He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it; who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; whose memory a benediction. (*6)

Here Stanley’s definition gives a big list as the parameter of success. Thoreau’s strong belief in self-reliance made him say that “I have learned that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. (*6). Thoreau is so much confident about the world and the capability of the human beings to advance steadily in life with their will power. Michel Korda echoes Thoreau when he says “To succeed, we must first believe that we can”. Ralf Emerson also thinks in the same line when he says “Self-trust is the first secret of success” (*6).

As we mentioned earlier, the meaning of success will be different to different people. It comes in many forms with many definitions. What an individual is searching in life, in business, or in business defines success for him. A sports star may have one definition of success, and a house wife staying at home may have quite a different definition. A film director seems to count his success by his film becoming a huge hit in the theatres, and a doctor may consider success from a surgery that succeeded. It largely depends on what perspective of life one has.

But apart from all definitions and quotes, success can be said as something that is formed as the finishing point of all the dreams. All the dreams make its end in success. Success cannot be treated as a mere word. For some people, it is all about fulfilling it in life. In the past, success of a person is counted in terms of his or her growing bank balance only, but today all those old concepts have changed. The all-inclusive materialistic mantras have given way to a holistic and positive attitude to life. Success is counted as a result of the synergy of various factors such as material, economical and spiritual satisfaction.

Abraham Maslow was a psychologist who tried to synthesis a large body of research on the topic, motivation. Maslow’s theories posited a hierarchy of human needs, which was divided into two sections; deficiency needs and growth needs. According to Maslow, the individual is ready to act upon the growth needs only after meeting the deficiency needs. The individual attains self actualization when all his growth needs are fulfilled. Maslow says that self-actualization is the ultimate aim of all the individuals’ life. Maslow’s self-actualization can be seen as another word for success.

Maslow’s self-actualization includes both material and spiritual concepts of success. A general misconception about success is that it encompasses only material prosperity. People think that the shortcut to success is to work hard, make a lot of money, and neglect or negate the inner life. Being successful spiritually doesn’t mean success. Instead, it is only a way to sainthood. Both these thought patterns leads someone to go astray.

Some cultures, for example Ancient Indian Culture, gave importance to spiritual success, and the result was growing poverty in the nation. The modern world with its globalization and modernization spirits gives importance to material success and the result is growing dissatisfaction and insecurity feelings even among these successful people. The ideal successful life is defined by many Ancient Indian philosophers as fullness in the outer, material world with that much fullness in the inner, spiritual world each reflecting, considering and supporting each other. So, an amalgam of these two patterns will give real success to a man.

It is not always what someone achieved decides how successful he or she is. In some cases those who are considered by the society as rich or successful may not consider themselves as successful. Rather than how much one has, it is ones attitude towards what he has decides his level of success. Some people think about their inferior sides only and consider themselves as total failures, however superior they are in other areas. A rich man having all the abundance in life may be thinking sadly about his children who are not brilliant enough to manage his wealth, or he may be worrying about his poor health. This is a peculiarity of the human mind. He will not be satisfied with anything in life. So, in this way no one will be labeled as successful.

From the experience of those who were successful in life, modern success trainers have deduced many tips to become successful in life. The first step to become successful in life is to identify ones heartfelt needs versus fantasies. Then focus on one thing at a time, and always be willing to admit need. One should show a strong commitment to accomplish that need. The next step is to prioritize the needs. One way to prioritize ones needs is to make a list of the things that one may do if one has only two days to live. Then think logically and set up a time limit for the most important things in the list.

Using visualizations of the set goals will increase the rate at which enthusiasm is generated in the mind. Cutting pictures related to the goals and putting them on the pin up board will help to boost enthusiasm. This enthusiasm changes the whole body chemistry, breaking down all mental blocks. Having a staunch belief in God will help to achieve goals and to be successful. One should have a willingness to receive ever without doubting ones worthiness is a quality that one should cultivate in their lives. Always ask to oneself “what should I do today to ahead towards my goal”. This conversation with one’s heart will help to create a strong mental energy to be successful in the deeds that one is involved in. The final tip for success is to surrender one’s little self to the true self, and go on with the plan.

Whatever definitions the word success has, or whatever ways are there to achieve it, true success is the achievement and realization of a valuable ideal that your heart has desired for and is connected to. It can be called as ones birth passion or success passion. People often tend to die for such passions. This is why some people explode out and do their maximum and come back successfully in life, and some others struggle all their life for it without any achievement. These two categories are operating two different spheres of success and action. Success is double and highly spirited when it is filled with emotion, boosted by passion, controlled by destiny and created with the fire of the heart. So, there is no success like the success where the heart is connected to it with the flames of passion.

My Definition of Success Essay example

"Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” – Albert Einstein -- My personal definition would not include “stuff” at all. No one will care (and neither will you) what kind of car your drove or how big your house was when you’re on your deathbed. Your thoughts will not be about your job, the office or how much money you made. Personal success is defined by how content and enjoyable your life is. That is not to say that challenges and disappointments aren’t included in this. A rich, eventful and challenging life doing what you enjoy and positively affecting others seems to me to be just about right. Find a job you love and you’ll never work another day in your life. I know I won’t. In my …show more content…

Past, present and future are all important to keep in perspective. Looking back and not having regrets is extremely satisfying. Your current situation and your contentment with it are also very important, and having goals and milestones to work toward in the future keeps you motivated and keeps life interesting and challenging. In this age in which we live, success is generally measured by the amount of money you earn, or the amount of wealth or power or number of promotions you’ve accumulated. I find that the older I grow, the more I view the people who are most happy and content with their lives as the most successful. Rich, poor or in between, they’ve tended to treat life as a journey, not a final destination. They took that trip when they were 25 even though they really couldn’t afford it, they ordered the $55 bottle of wine with their filet because they knew that even though it was expensive it would enhance the meal so much more than water would. They took a chance on a start-up company, moved to Europe or Asia and experienced things that most people only dream about. If they managed to grow wealthy from the experience, so much the better. As long as moderation with most things is practiced, things won’t spin out of control. Bottom line rules for a successful life: Always try new things. Listen twice as much as you talk. Travel as much as you can comfortably afford. Faith and family always come first —

Definition Of Success

In American society, individuals are heavily influenced to equate success with the measure of one’s degree of wealth. However, the measure of success does not rest solely on materialistic matters. The term is defined as “the accomplishment of one's goals,” revealing that success is not limited to one’s fortunes (Random House Inc.). In addition, success is not a term with a universally accepted set of specified goals; the strive for success varies among individuals, and the varying goals defining success are without bounds. Success is a personal goal that provides an individual with fulfillment, is measured with the effectiveness of an accomplishment, and is an endeavor that involves adversities.

College Admissions Essay: Earlier In My Life

So many people today are still in this error of what success is. Having a lot of money, houses, cars, etc, is a good thing but it is just an aspect of success. You can have all the above mentioned items and more but you are not close to being successful. On the other side, you may not even have a dime in your bank account and yet you are successful.

Success Definition Essay

For many people, success is simply getting paid the most. For others, it is as simple as achieving a goal they have set for themselves. To me, success is a combination of both achieving goals and living a fulfilling life. Financial success allows for careless actions. Social success brings about happiness.

Defining Success

Success has a unique meaning to everyone. To me, success means doing what I love, being happy, and to make good money.

The Definition of Success Essay

What is success? How does one succeed in life? A few moments' thought will convince us that the question is by no means an easy one to answer. We say this, that, or the other man is successful, but what do we mean by it? One man has houses and lands, has a large bank account, drives fast horses and has many apparent friends, such a man is accounted successful. Yet all of these things that minister to his pleasure have been acquired by unremitting labor, by hard, avaricious dealings with his fellow-men, by trampling upon the hearts and affections of thousands; in the face of these facts is the man a successful one?

Definition Of Success Essay

Americans tend to define success by money, and what money can possibly buy. We judge off of popularity and social status. If you're not rich or in a major well known business or high paying job you're a failure. An antonym of success is unprofitable, according to Roget's Thesaurus of Words for Intellectuals. Three synonyms for success that caught my eye were moneymaking, hardworking and wealth. Gladwell states in his book Outliers that, “Success is a function of persistence and doggedness and the willingness to work hard for 22 minutes to make sense of something that most people would give up on after 30 seconds.” ( Gladwell 127) Thus meaning that you must work towards success.

Success means many things to many different people. The definition in the dictionary says it is the “performance or achievement that is marked by success, as by the attainment of honors” ( Dictionary.com. Dictionary.com. Web. 2 Sept. 2015.) therefore, it means that success mostly comes from hard work. To me, that is the exact definition. Having some kind of achievement can come from just about anything; work, sports, school and much more. No matter what, I do believe that whatever I set my mind to, I can and I will succeed in some kind of way.

Success, to some people, can mostly be defined by the amount of wealth a person has. This mind set, being very popular in today’s culture, has a very big influence over many people. Most people’s goals and ambitions include having more than some people or more worldly possessions. Many people perceive this mindset to be very bad. Although this mindset tends to be perceived as bad by many people, some people believe it is the only true way to be successful. Many people who achieve this sort of success tend to be very distant and generally not as happy as one would believe they would be. Having wealth, although it can be very good, tends to

But success could be something as simple as getting through a rough day, passing a test, talking to a crush or something big, such as successfully climbing a mountain, or being accepted into a religion. Success is based on personal beliefs; everyone accomplishes success in their own way. It is opinionated, some definitions of success may not be the same as other people’s definition. Do not let others influence the positivity within success. A study at Strayer University discovers that, “A whopping 90% believe that success is more about happiness than power, possessions, or prestige.” (search). This shows that Americans are trying to change the usual definition, created by Merriam-Webster, “the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame.” (search). Create a personal definition of success and then go above and beyond it. Are people strong enough to stick to their beliefs and not change based on others? Saying that one isn’t influenced by others, but acting like they can, can sometimes show the truth. Business Insider backs this statement up, “We like to think that we are largely in control of our day-to-day lives, yet most of what we do, from what we eat to who we sleep with, and even the way we feel, is significantly influenced by those around us’ and those around them, and those around them.” (Business). Never let others determine the happiness associated with your success; you are

Outline For Research Paper

Some people believe that being successful is when you have a lot of money, living in a big house and having a nice car. For me, it is not. Just like Arianna Huffington said: “ while we tend to think of success along two metrics — money and power — we need to add a third.” For me the third one is being happy. That is true, if you can always be happy in your life. It must be the most successful life. So to be success in my life, I will be smiling to face my challenges and accomplish them.

When one hears the word “success”, he or she typically thinks of having a nice car, a large home, and plenty of money. But, success has nothing to do with the materialistic things. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, success is a favorable or desired outcome. Therefore, success isn’t the amount of possessions someone has, it is being content with his or her situation.

Do you really known the definition of success? Or are you still letting the media feed you the paragon of success? He’s rich, famous, happy, joyful, and intelligent and has the ideal family, or are we knowledgeable enough to distinguish the real definition of “success” from the media and mainstream perception of success. Media has brainwashed us think that success has to look a certain way, we have to have nice cars, fancy houses and the latest technology to be considered “successful”. However, that is not the case, the true definition of success is having knowledge, respect and confidence which are hard to accomplish in today's society, but not impossible.

Americans are looking for the greater things in life. Everyone seems either unhappy with their jobs, or just do not have one, but then there are the few Americans that do what they love five days a week. The concept of success is misunderstood massively throughout the world. The idea of it is tossed around, because of how people see it. Different people have different perspectives of success. The term success can be defined in many ways whether it be by how much money a person has, the type of job a person has, or they are successful just by the expectations they set for themselves. Success can be accomplished through motivation, opportunity, and patience, not all of these are easy to obtain, but in due time they will prevail.

Success Essay

What formulates a person successful?

There are many ways in the world to be successful. But most people think of celebrities, artist, politicians, and businessmen whenever they heard the word success.

Moreover, they think doing what they will make you successful but that not the case. They forget the most basic thing that makes a person successful that is their hard work, dedication, and the desire to achieve their dream. More importantly, they what they like to do not what that others told them to do. Successful people do what they like to do also they do what they feel correct for their business.

If you look in the dictionary for the meaning of the word success then you will find that it means the achievement of one’s goal or aim . So, basically, anyone can achieve success by simply achieving their aim or goal.

What is the harm of success?

We all knew that we can’t achieve something without sacrificing something. Success also demands various things from you. But these sacrifices will not go in vain if you achieve your goal.

Certainly, many people achieve professional success but in doing so they fail in achieving mental, social and physical success. The tension of lacking behind in other things pulls them apart.

Also, there are cases where people became so obsessed with success that the people around them start to feel uncomfortable around them. In some cases, they have gone mad. Apart from that, people also get depressed if they can’t achieve success like others. So, we can say that there is much harm to success.

Success and hard work

It may sound unfit to some peoples but success depends a lot of hard work. Without it, you can’t become successful. Hard work does not mean that you do laborious work or the work that make you sweat. Hard work means having a healthy body, strong mind, willpower and positive attitude towards things. And for all those things you need energy. So, be attentive to your body and soul.

Besides, do not just work on your program, push your limit, take charge of other things, improve your skills and most importantly keep learning. Apart from that, be with positive peoples, develop positive habits, and do exercise not only for the body but also for your mind.

To sum it up, we can say that success is like a seed that needs a balanced proportion of all the elements of life. And no one can achieve success in a day they have to go through and face different conditions in life for being successful. Above all, success is the feeling of fulfillment that you feel when you achieve your goal.

How to Define Your Own Version of Success

Imogen-Roy-body-based-business-productivity-leadership-mentor-for-women

A new formula for defining success

Success = financial stability + creative freedom + lifestyle design

Have you ever questioned what the word ‘success’ means specifically for you ?

For most of my life, i had a narrow definition of what success meant. it involved people knowing your name, and having enough money — ie. lots of money — to buy an endless stream of designer handbags and big cars., it wasn’t a definition i had opted-in to, but it was the definition that had been fed to me from childhood through films, magazines about celebrities, and our education system. and i swallowed it whole..

Ever wondered am I living a life that’s true to myself?

Give yourself the gift of clarity ..

Vision of Success Online Course – now available

It was a definition of success from an outside-in perspective (what other people consider most important in life) versus an inside-out perspective (what I really care about).

Once i began working for myself as a marketing consultant and later as a coach, i realised that i needed to totally redefine my definition of success. if i was to set meaningful personal and financial goals, then i first needed to know what i actually wanted in life., what i wanted. it was a surprisingly difficult question to answer. what i’m about to share with you is the method i used to do so..

What Does Success Look Like For You?

As a former corporate marketing manager, I used this question a lot when planning big projects and campaigns with colleagues. But I had never asked it of myself. When I finally did, the first place I looked was the English Collins Dictionary definition. Here’s what I found:

success (noun) (səkses ) 1. Success is the achievement of something that you have been trying to do. 2. Success is the achievement of a high position in a particular field, for example in business or politics. 3. Someone or something that is a success achieves a high position, makes a lot of money, or is admired a great deal.

Unfortunately, I believe too many people understand the word success by definitions 2 and 3 and not enough by 1 — “Success is the achievement of something that you have been trying to do.

The versions of success in definitions 2 and 3 are our western cultural baggage. achieve a high position. make a lot of money. be admired a great deal., the problem with those definitions is that they suggest that anyone who doesn’t achieve those things in life is not a success. and that’s nonsense., let’s imagine success another way..

A New Formula for Defining Success

Success = financial stability + creative freedom + lifestyle design.

Financial stability… means having control over your time, workload and income. It means you can sustainably earn the income you want without working more than you want. Creative freedom… means working as much as you want, when you want, where you want and with whom you want. Lifestyle design… means arranging work around your lifestyle, not the other way round. It means being able to prioritise your family, your health, your hobbies and still deliver great work.

If you’re reading this and thinking , “Ha! Get real. As if it’s possible to live a life like that”, then you’re not alone. I too believed that to be successful, you had to sacrifice something. To be really successful, you had to sacrifice a lot.

But i’ve learned a great deal since then. i’ve learned that success is an inside job., success simply means achieving what you want. what you want. what you want., if success for you looks nothing like a high position, a lot of money and admiration — that’s success and if you really want a high position, a lot of money and admiration — that’s success but if you get all those things yet what you really wanted was a quiet, easy life in a cottage by the sea, then that’s not success..

When Success Is Not Success

Here’s my unpopular opinion: Success without fulfilment is not success. It’s failure.

If you are materially successful but spiritually bankrupt, that’s failure., if you have attained a “high position” but at a detriment to your health and your relationships, that’s failure., if you are “greatly admired” but are plagued with self-loathing, that’s failure..

Success is simply being able to say in 10 years: I designed this life. I didn’t settle for it. I didn’t sacrifice.

Success feels and looks different for every single person. It’s not a destination but an ever-evolving journey, and it doesn’t come with a map because there is no one path. Once you understand this, you can start designing your life based on what you want, not what you think you should do.

I believe that everyone can design their life on their own terms. it requires some deep thought, epic imagination, strategic planning, the courage to make some big decisions, and a whole lot of commitment., it may sound unrealistic. but it’s absolutely possible..

Writing Your Own Definition Of Success

The first exercise I ask new coaching client of mine to do is called Vision of Success, and I’m going to share it right here with you.

It involves writing your own definition of success by describing in concrete, tangible details exactly what lifestyle design, creative freedom and financial stability would mean for you., so grab a notebook and start answering the following questions. try to be as specific and precise as you can..

1. LIFESTYLE DESIGN

What does success look like for you in terms of health and wellness, family and social life, holidays and hobbies?

Where do you spend your time day-to-day, week-to-week, and how do you spend it.

2. CREATIVE FREEDOM

What does meaningful work feel like for you professionally?

What kind of people do you work for and with how do they inspire you, do you get to work on personal creative projects as well as client ones, do you get to switch off and step back from work whenever you want without everything crashing down around you.

3. FINANCIAL STABILITY

What does financial success look like in order to be able to afford the lifestyle you want?

What’s your “more-than-enough number” that leaves you with plenty to save for the future and give back, get really specific with the numbers. think about revenue but also personal income goals, budgets for ideal savings, investments and charitable giving., use your answers to weave together what success means for you. return to it regularly. revise if necessary..

Vision of Success is a self-paced, online course containing two powerful exercises:

The first, Defining Success , will teach you a framework for creating your own unique vision of success.

The second, Productive with Purpose , is a goal-setting exercise to help you take aligned action on bringing the specifics of your vision to life.

Creating a Vision of Success Is NOT Just a Strategy for the Good Times

Is visioning an exercise that we can only do when things are going well for us? Doesn't a crisis seem like a really silly time to be creating a vision of success?

These are all common questions i get asked by clients and students. in this video, i share the counter-intuitive reason why i believe tough times are a great time to start imagining our dream life, and why true creativity can only flourish from a fertile void., in turbulent times, often what happens is that what was previously considered mad, risky or dangerous, suddenly becomes maybe not such a bad option. all cards are on the table – and it's possible to play any of them.

Creating a vision of success isn't just for the good times. Visions are a powerful source of energy, focus and purpose. Our visions become the fuel that motivates us to do hard things, and the courage to defend what we value when it's at stake.

If you are currently questioning whether now is the right time to be expanding your imagination and writing your own version of success, this video is for you.

9.1 Developing a Strong, Clear Thesis Statement

Learning objectives.

  • Develop a strong, clear thesis statement with the proper elements.
  • Revise your thesis statement.

Have you ever known a person who was not very good at telling stories? You probably had trouble following his train of thought as he jumped around from point to point, either being too brief in places that needed further explanation or providing too many details on a meaningless element. Maybe he told the end of the story first, then moved to the beginning and later added details to the middle. His ideas were probably scattered, and the story did not flow very well. When the story was over, you probably had many questions.

Just as a personal anecdote can be a disorganized mess, an essay can fall into the same trap of being out of order and confusing. That is why writers need a thesis statement to provide a specific focus for their essay and to organize what they are about to discuss in the body.

Just like a topic sentence summarizes a single paragraph, the thesis statement summarizes an entire essay. It tells the reader the point you want to make in your essay, while the essay itself supports that point. It is like a signpost that signals the essay’s destination. You should form your thesis before you begin to organize an essay, but you may find that it needs revision as the essay develops.

Elements of a Thesis Statement

For every essay you write, you must focus on a central idea. This idea stems from a topic you have chosen or been assigned or from a question your teacher has asked. It is not enough merely to discuss a general topic or simply answer a question with a yes or no. You have to form a specific opinion, and then articulate that into a controlling idea —the main idea upon which you build your thesis.

Remember that a thesis is not the topic itself, but rather your interpretation of the question or subject. For whatever topic your professor gives you, you must ask yourself, “What do I want to say about it?” Asking and then answering this question is vital to forming a thesis that is precise, forceful and confident.

A thesis is one sentence long and appears toward the end of your introduction. It is specific and focuses on one to three points of a single idea—points that are able to be demonstrated in the body. It forecasts the content of the essay and suggests how you will organize your information. Remember that a thesis statement does not summarize an issue but rather dissects it.

A Strong Thesis Statement

A strong thesis statement contains the following qualities.

Specificity. A thesis statement must concentrate on a specific area of a general topic. As you may recall, the creation of a thesis statement begins when you choose a broad subject and then narrow down its parts until you pinpoint a specific aspect of that topic. For example, health care is a broad topic, but a proper thesis statement would focus on a specific area of that topic, such as options for individuals without health care coverage.

Precision. A strong thesis statement must be precise enough to allow for a coherent argument and to remain focused on the topic. If the specific topic is options for individuals without health care coverage, then your precise thesis statement must make an exact claim about it, such as that limited options exist for those who are uninsured by their employers. You must further pinpoint what you are going to discuss regarding these limited effects, such as whom they affect and what the cause is.

Ability to be argued. A thesis statement must present a relevant and specific argument. A factual statement often is not considered arguable. Be sure your thesis statement contains a point of view that can be supported with evidence.

Ability to be demonstrated. For any claim you make in your thesis, you must be able to provide reasons and examples for your opinion. You can rely on personal observations in order to do this, or you can consult outside sources to demonstrate that what you assert is valid. A worthy argument is backed by examples and details.

Forcefulness. A thesis statement that is forceful shows readers that you are, in fact, making an argument. The tone is assertive and takes a stance that others might oppose.

Confidence. In addition to using force in your thesis statement, you must also use confidence in your claim. Phrases such as I feel or I believe actually weaken the readers’ sense of your confidence because these phrases imply that you are the only person who feels the way you do. In other words, your stance has insufficient backing. Taking an authoritative stance on the matter persuades your readers to have faith in your argument and open their minds to what you have to say.

Even in a personal essay that allows the use of first person, your thesis should not contain phrases such as in my opinion or I believe . These statements reduce your credibility and weaken your argument. Your opinion is more convincing when you use a firm attitude.

On a separate sheet of paper, write a thesis statement for each of the following topics. Remember to make each statement specific, precise, demonstrable, forceful and confident.

  • Texting while driving
  • The legal drinking age in the United States
  • Steroid use among professional athletes

Examples of Appropriate Thesis Statements

Each of the following thesis statements meets several of the following requirements:

  • Specificity
  • Ability to be argued
  • Ability to be demonstrated
  • Forcefulness
  • The societal and personal struggles of Troy Maxon in the play Fences symbolize the challenge of black males who lived through segregation and integration in the United States.
  • Closing all American borders for a period of five years is one solution that will tackle illegal immigration.
  • Shakespeare’s use of dramatic irony in Romeo and Juliet spoils the outcome for the audience and weakens the plot.
  • J. D. Salinger’s character in Catcher in the Rye , Holden Caulfield, is a confused rebel who voices his disgust with phonies, yet in an effort to protect himself, he acts like a phony on many occasions.
  • Compared to an absolute divorce, no-fault divorce is less expensive, promotes fairer settlements, and reflects a more realistic view of the causes for marital breakdown.
  • Exposing children from an early age to the dangers of drug abuse is a sure method of preventing future drug addicts.
  • In today’s crumbling job market, a high school diploma is not significant enough education to land a stable, lucrative job.

You can find thesis statements in many places, such as in the news; in the opinions of friends, coworkers or teachers; and even in songs you hear on the radio. Become aware of thesis statements in everyday life by paying attention to people’s opinions and their reasons for those opinions. Pay attention to your own everyday thesis statements as well, as these can become material for future essays.

Now that you have read about the contents of a good thesis statement and have seen examples, take a look at the pitfalls to avoid when composing your own thesis:

A thesis is weak when it is simply a declaration of your subject or a description of what you will discuss in your essay.

Weak thesis statement: My paper will explain why imagination is more important than knowledge.

A thesis is weak when it makes an unreasonable or outrageous claim or insults the opposing side.

Weak thesis statement: Religious radicals across America are trying to legislate their Puritanical beliefs by banning required high school books.

A thesis is weak when it contains an obvious fact or something that no one can disagree with or provides a dead end.

Weak thesis statement: Advertising companies use sex to sell their products.

A thesis is weak when the statement is too broad.

Weak thesis statement: The life of Abraham Lincoln was long and challenging.

Read the following thesis statements. On a separate piece of paper, identify each as weak or strong. For those that are weak, list the reasons why. Then revise the weak statements so that they conform to the requirements of a strong thesis.

  • The subject of this paper is my experience with ferrets as pets.
  • The government must expand its funding for research on renewable energy resources in order to prepare for the impending end of oil.
  • Edgar Allan Poe was a poet who lived in Baltimore during the nineteenth century.
  • In this essay, I will give you lots of reasons why slot machines should not be legalized in Baltimore.
  • Despite his promises during his campaign, President Kennedy took few executive measures to support civil rights legislation.
  • Because many children’s toys have potential safety hazards that could lead to injury, it is clear that not all children’s toys are safe.
  • My experience with young children has taught me that I want to be a disciplinary parent because I believe that a child without discipline can be a parent’s worst nightmare.

Writing at Work

Often in your career, you will need to ask your boss for something through an e-mail. Just as a thesis statement organizes an essay, it can also organize your e-mail request. While your e-mail will be shorter than an essay, using a thesis statement in your first paragraph quickly lets your boss know what you are asking for, why it is necessary, and what the benefits are. In short body paragraphs, you can provide the essential information needed to expand upon your request.

Thesis Statement Revision

Your thesis will probably change as you write, so you will need to modify it to reflect exactly what you have discussed in your essay. Remember from Chapter 8 “The Writing Process: How Do I Begin?” that your thesis statement begins as a working thesis statement , an indefinite statement that you make about your topic early in the writing process for the purpose of planning and guiding your writing.

Working thesis statements often become stronger as you gather information and form new opinions and reasons for those opinions. Revision helps you strengthen your thesis so that it matches what you have expressed in the body of the paper.

The best way to revise your thesis statement is to ask questions about it and then examine the answers to those questions. By challenging your own ideas and forming definite reasons for those ideas, you grow closer to a more precise point of view, which you can then incorporate into your thesis statement.

Ways to Revise Your Thesis

You can cut down on irrelevant aspects and revise your thesis by taking the following steps:

1. Pinpoint and replace all nonspecific words, such as people , everything , society , or life , with more precise words in order to reduce any vagueness.

Working thesis: Young people have to work hard to succeed in life.

Revised thesis: Recent college graduates must have discipline and persistence in order to find and maintain a stable job in which they can use and be appreciated for their talents.

The revised thesis makes a more specific statement about success and what it means to work hard. The original includes too broad a range of people and does not define exactly what success entails. By replacing those general words like people and work hard , the writer can better focus his or her research and gain more direction in his or her writing.

2. Clarify ideas that need explanation by asking yourself questions that narrow your thesis.

Working thesis: The welfare system is a joke.

Revised thesis: The welfare system keeps a socioeconomic class from gaining employment by alluring members of that class with unearned income, instead of programs to improve their education and skill sets.

A joke means many things to many people. Readers bring all sorts of backgrounds and perspectives to the reading process and would need clarification for a word so vague. This expression may also be too informal for the selected audience. By asking questions, the writer can devise a more precise and appropriate explanation for joke . The writer should ask himself or herself questions similar to the 5WH questions. (See Chapter 8 “The Writing Process: How Do I Begin?” for more information on the 5WH questions.) By incorporating the answers to these questions into a thesis statement, the writer more accurately defines his or her stance, which will better guide the writing of the essay.

3. Replace any linking verbs with action verbs. Linking verbs are forms of the verb to be , a verb that simply states that a situation exists.

Working thesis: Kansas City schoolteachers are not paid enough.

Revised thesis: The Kansas City legislature cannot afford to pay its educators, resulting in job cuts and resignations in a district that sorely needs highly qualified and dedicated teachers.

The linking verb in this working thesis statement is the word are . Linking verbs often make thesis statements weak because they do not express action. Rather, they connect words and phrases to the second half of the sentence. Readers might wonder, “Why are they not paid enough?” But this statement does not compel them to ask many more questions. The writer should ask himself or herself questions in order to replace the linking verb with an action verb, thus forming a stronger thesis statement, one that takes a more definitive stance on the issue:

  • Who is not paying the teachers enough?
  • What is considered “enough”?
  • What is the problem?
  • What are the results

4. Omit any general claims that are hard to support.

Working thesis: Today’s teenage girls are too sexualized.

Revised thesis: Teenage girls who are captivated by the sexual images on MTV are conditioned to believe that a woman’s worth depends on her sensuality, a feeling that harms their self-esteem and behavior.

It is true that some young women in today’s society are more sexualized than in the past, but that is not true for all girls. Many girls have strict parents, dress appropriately, and do not engage in sexual activity while in middle school and high school. The writer of this thesis should ask the following questions:

  • Which teenage girls?
  • What constitutes “too” sexualized?
  • Why are they behaving that way?
  • Where does this behavior show up?
  • What are the repercussions?

In the first section of Chapter 8 “The Writing Process: How Do I Begin?” , you determined your purpose for writing and your audience. You then completed a freewriting exercise about an event you recently experienced and chose a general topic to write about. Using that general topic, you then narrowed it down by answering the 5WH questions. After you answered these questions, you chose one of the three methods of prewriting and gathered possible supporting points for your working thesis statement.

Now, on a separate sheet of paper, write down your working thesis statement. Identify any weaknesses in this sentence and revise the statement to reflect the elements of a strong thesis statement. Make sure it is specific, precise, arguable, demonstrable, forceful, and confident.

Collaboration

Please share with a classmate and compare your answers.

In your career you may have to write a project proposal that focuses on a particular problem in your company, such as reinforcing the tardiness policy. The proposal would aim to fix the problem; using a thesis statement would clearly state the boundaries of the problem and tell the goals of the project. After writing the proposal, you may find that the thesis needs revision to reflect exactly what is expressed in the body. Using the techniques from this chapter would apply to revising that thesis.

Key Takeaways

  • Proper essays require a thesis statement to provide a specific focus and suggest how the essay will be organized.
  • A thesis statement is your interpretation of the subject, not the topic itself.
  • A strong thesis is specific, precise, forceful, confident, and is able to be demonstrated.
  • A strong thesis challenges readers with a point of view that can be debated and can be supported with evidence.
  • A weak thesis is simply a declaration of your topic or contains an obvious fact that cannot be argued.
  • Depending on your topic, it may or may not be appropriate to use first person point of view.
  • Revise your thesis by ensuring all words are specific, all ideas are exact, and all verbs express action.

How to Conclude an Essay | Interactive Example

Published on January 24, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on July 23, 2023.

The conclusion is the final paragraph of your essay . A strong conclusion aims to:

  • Tie together the essay’s main points
  • Show why your argument matters
  • Leave the reader with a strong impression

Your conclusion should give a sense of closure and completion to your argument, but also show what new questions or possibilities it has opened up.

This conclusion is taken from our annotated essay example , which discusses the history of the Braille system. Hover over each part to see why it’s effective.

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

Next, remind the reader of the main points that you used to support your argument.

Avoid simply summarizing each paragraph or repeating each point in order; try to bring your points together in a way that makes the connections between them clear. The conclusion is your final chance to show how all the paragraphs of your essay add up to a coherent whole.

To wrap up your conclusion, zoom out to a broader view of the topic and consider the implications of your argument. For example:

  • Does it contribute a new understanding of your topic?
  • Does it raise new questions for future study?
  • Does it lead to practical suggestions or predictions?
  • Can it be applied to different contexts?
  • Can it be connected to a broader debate or theme?

Whatever your essay is about, the conclusion should aim to emphasize the significance of your argument, whether that’s within your academic subject or in the wider world.

Try to end with a strong, decisive sentence, leaving the reader with a lingering sense of interest in your topic.

The easiest way to improve your conclusion is to eliminate these common mistakes.

Don’t include new evidence

Any evidence or analysis that is essential to supporting your thesis statement should appear in the main body of the essay.

The conclusion might include minor pieces of new information—for example, a sentence or two discussing broader implications, or a quotation that nicely summarizes your central point. But it shouldn’t introduce any major new sources or ideas that need further explanation to understand.

Don’t use “concluding phrases”

Avoid using obvious stock phrases to tell the reader what you’re doing:

  • “In conclusion…”
  • “To sum up…”

These phrases aren’t forbidden, but they can make your writing sound weak. By returning to your main argument, it will quickly become clear that you are concluding the essay—you shouldn’t have to spell it out.

Don’t undermine your argument

Avoid using apologetic phrases that sound uncertain or confused:

  • “This is just one approach among many.”
  • “There are good arguments on both sides of this issue.”
  • “There is no clear answer to this problem.”

Even if your essay has explored different points of view, your own position should be clear. There may be many possible approaches to the topic, but you want to leave the reader convinced that yours is the best one!

This conclusion is taken from an argumentative essay about the internet’s impact on education. It acknowledges the opposing arguments while taking a clear, decisive position.

The internet has had a major positive impact on the world of education; occasional pitfalls aside, its value is evident in numerous applications. The future of teaching lies in the possibilities the internet opens up for communication, research, and interactivity. As the popularity of distance learning shows, students value the flexibility and accessibility offered by digital education, and educators should fully embrace these advantages. The internet’s dangers, real and imaginary, have been documented exhaustively by skeptics, but the internet is here to stay; it is time to focus seriously on its potential for good.

This conclusion is taken from a short expository essay that explains the invention of the printing press and its effects on European society. It focuses on giving a clear, concise overview of what was covered in the essay.

The invention of the printing press was important not only in terms of its immediate cultural and economic effects, but also in terms of its major impact on politics and religion across Europe. In the century following the invention of the printing press, the relatively stationary intellectual atmosphere of the Middle Ages gave way to the social upheavals of the Reformation and the Renaissance. A single technological innovation had contributed to the total reshaping of the continent.

This conclusion is taken from a literary analysis essay about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein . It summarizes what the essay’s analysis achieved and emphasizes its originality.

By tracing the depiction of Frankenstein through the novel’s three volumes, I have demonstrated how the narrative structure shifts our perception of the character. While the Frankenstein of the first volume is depicted as having innocent intentions, the second and third volumes—first in the creature’s accusatory voice, and then in his own voice—increasingly undermine him, causing him to appear alternately ridiculous and vindictive. Far from the one-dimensional villain he is often taken to be, the character of Frankenstein is compelling because of the dynamic narrative frame in which he is placed. In this frame, Frankenstein’s narrative self-presentation responds to the images of him we see from others’ perspectives. This conclusion sheds new light on the novel, foregrounding Shelley’s unique layering of narrative perspectives and its importance for the depiction of character.

Your essay’s conclusion should contain:

  • A rephrased version of your overall thesis
  • A brief review of the key points you made in the main body
  • An indication of why your argument matters

The conclusion may also reflect on the broader implications of your argument, showing how your ideas could applied to other contexts or debates.

For a stronger conclusion paragraph, avoid including:

  • Important evidence or analysis that wasn’t mentioned in the main body
  • Generic concluding phrases (e.g. “In conclusion…”)
  • Weak statements that undermine your argument (e.g. “There are good points on both sides of this issue.”)

Your conclusion should leave the reader with a strong, decisive impression of your work.

The conclusion paragraph of an essay is usually shorter than the introduction . As a rule, it shouldn’t take up more than 10–15% of the text.
