Admission Assessments

What is an admission assessment.

The Admission Assessment in English, Math and/or Science is taken by mature applicants as part of the application process. The Admission Assessment measures if the applicant has the academic skills required to start the program.

A mature applicant is a person who is 19 years of age or older on the start date of the program, and who does not have the required program credit(s) i.e., Grade 12 English.

If you have already accepted an offer of admission from George Brown College, you may need to take a Placement Assessment.

You will receive a letter with the admission assessment information from the Registrar’s Office. You should book your appointment immediately upon receipt of your testing letter.

Leave yourself some time to review and prepare for the assessment as the results are important to your admission process.

Placement and Admission testing will be taking place in-person on campus at 200 King Street East unless you have been notified otherwise.

• We cannot test international students for admission purposes without seeing this letter.

You will not receive any results on the day that you take the assessment.

Once you complete your assessment, your scores will be submitted to the George Brown College Admissions Office. They will review your results and they will notify you if you are offered a place into the program(s) via your STU View  account and by email.

Please note that your application cannot proceed until you have completed all parts of your Admission Assessment.

After an admission decision has been made, you may wish to meet with an Assessment Advisor to go over your assessment results. You can make an appointment to do so by calling the Assessment Advisor Line. Advisors cannot discuss assessment results over the phone.

Domestic students who are living out of province may be eligible to complete the admission assessment at an off-site location. You will be required to make arrangements at a test centre at your local educational institution, 

Only invigilators working in a full-time teaching, administrative, or counselling position in a recognized post-secondary institution (college or university) will be approved.

What is the Admissions Application Summary?

It is a tab found in STU-VIEW that allows an applicant to view a comprehensive application summary. The Admissions Application Summary is designed to provide applicants with a view of their current progress through the admissions cycle. The summary enables applicants to view the program admissions requirements, the information received by the college and their current stage in the process.

College staff and applicants benefit as application progress and detail is all visible in one place.

No. The system is designed so that you can only view one application at a time. Note: You can only view the status information for programs for which you applied for via OCAS (Ontario College Admission System).

There is a blue bar on the left side that indicates the tasks that have been completed. The circles that are white are outstanding and the circles that are yellow are completed.

The Academic Requirements section refers to Admission Program Requirements. Some programs require that minimum grades be met in order to be admitted to a program. If the program selected indicates requirements, the academic details and the status of the requirements will be displayed. Please note that the Academic Requirements are listed as minimum grades for entry to a program. This is not to be confused with cut-off marks for admission. If an applicant has met the minimum grade, it does not mean that they will automatically be offered a spot in the program to which they have applied. Offers of Admission are based on competition.

Typically, a total of 6 courses are necessary for entry into George Brown College. When "Other (4) Grade 12 U/M courses" is a requirement, this usually means 4 courses other than English and Math are required. In order to meet this requirement, the applicant must have completed 4 courses, other than English and Math, with a passing grade. If an applicant has completed the Other (4) U/M courses, it does not mean that they will automatically be offered a spot in the program to which they have applied. Offers of Admission are based on competition.

Typically, a total of 6 courses are necessary for admission into George Brown College. Each program will have a minimum average requirement. The calculation is based on the average of the applicant's top 6 courses, including mandatory courses such as English and/or Math. The minimum average required will be listed based on the program. If an applicant has met the average requirement, it does not mean that they will automatically be offered a spot in the program to which they have applied. Offers of Admission are based on competition.

These are documents required by the college before admission can be finalized. They may include things like Proof of Residence, Proof of High School Diploma, Proof of Degree or Diploma, etc.

Some programs at George Brown College require an applicant to complete a test in English, Math or both disciplines in order to be placed in the appropriate first year course for the respective subject. George Brown College | Eligibility criteria

The eligibility criteria for diploma, graduate, and postgraduate programs are as follows –

• You need to be a senior secondary school graduate (Grade 12)
• A minimum of 60% aggregate in Grades 10 and 12 is required for all streams.
• A minimum of 50% aggregate in the English language is required in Grades 10 and 12. 
• Applicants to the Information Technology, Construction, and Engineering programs must have a minimum aggregate of 50% in mathematics in Grades 10 and 12. 
• Applicants for all other programs must have passed English and Mathematics in Grade 12. (50% aggregate in grade 10 Mathematics for students who did not have the subject in Grade 12) 
• Minimum aggregate in Grade 12 Science, Mathematics, and English may be required for some limited programs. 
• Senior high school diploma or an equivalent qualification. 
• You must have at least five major topics in Grade 12 to graduate, including English. All made an average score of 65% and nothing less than a 60% aggregate in all subjects individually. 
• In the case of students who completed their Grade 12 without Mathematics, their scores from Grades 10 and 11 (or any post-secondary courses taken) may be considered if their aggregate score is a minimum of 70%. 
• Some degree programs also require minimum scores in Grade 12 Science courses. 
• A university or college graduate degree is required. 
• A first- or second-class degree is required (second-class degree results must have a minimum overall average of 55% for Business programs and a 60% aggregate for all other streams).
• Aspirants to a fashion program must have a first-class degree with a minimum of 70% aggregate. 

Note : At the time of registration for any George Brown College courses, all overseas applicants must be at least 18 years old. 

The eligibility criteria for various English language proficiency exams with respect to the programs provided by George Brown College are as follows –

At the time of application, international students must submit the following documents to George Brown College:

• IELTS / TOEFL /PTE 2 years from the test date
• A GBC English for Academic Program (EAP) certificate (Level 8 or 9). There is no defined limitation; however, a review may be required if it has been more than 3 years since completion. 
• GBC Admissions Test certificate no later than 1 year of completion.
• Approved private language school partner Certificate of Completion from Ontario public Colleges EAP within the last 3 years.
• 2 consecutive years FT High School certificate graduated within the last 4 years in Canada or other English-speaking countries

Brown admits 5.2% of applicants to class of 2028, third-lowest acceptance rate in history

1,623 regular decision admits will join 898 admitted during early decision.

Brown University admitted 1,623 regular decision applicants to the class of 2028. Its overall acceptance rate for this cycle is 5.2%, the third-lowest in Brown’s history.

This cohort is the first to be admitted since the Supreme Court severely restricted race-conscious admissions practices at universities nationwide. These students join 898 others admitted during early decision in December, bringing the total number of admitted students this year to 2,521. 

Acceptance rates for Brown’s dual degree programs both saw among their largest applicant pools. The dual undergraduate-medical Program in Liberal Medical Education, or PLME, accepted just 76 of 4,251 applicants, and the Brown-RISD Dual Degree program accepted 20 of its 953 applicants.

“Once again, we were humbled by the breadth of perspective and depth of talent in the applicant pool,” Powell wrote in an email to The Herald. “Though there were necessary changes to some aspects of the admission process, we remained focused on our core values and mission — identifying students from a broad range of experiences with demonstrated academic excellence and the potential to make extraordinary contributions to the Brown community.”

This academic year, the University received 48,881 applications, its third-largest applicant pool ever. This marks a 5% decrease since last year, a dip that Powell previously told The Herald was “planned for and expected.”

With a smaller applicant pool, the University saw slightly higher acceptance rates than in previous years. For the class of 2028, 3.8% of regular decision applicants were admitted.

The University admitted approximately two-thirds of the prospective class of 2028 via regular decision and one-third via early decision. 

The class of 2028 is the last class applying under a test-optional policy, which will end starting this summer. Powell declined to provide the test score ranges for admitted students. 

16% of admitted students are first-generation, or the first in their family to attend college, a 2% decrease from the previous year.

The University also admitted a roughly equal number of students who were assigned male and female at birth — a methodology in keeping with federal reporting requirements. The gender of applicants is recorded as a free response field, making students’ responses harder to quantify, Powell noted. 

The number of admitted rural students increased, with students from rural areas and small towns making up 9% percent of admitted applicants. This is a slight increase from last year, when only 8% of admitted students were identified as rural students.

The admitted students varied in their educational background with 58.1% coming from public high schools, 32.4% coming from private schools and 9.4% from parochial schools. These numbers have seen little variation over the past decade.

The top five intended concentrations for the class of 2028 are economics, computer science, engineering, biology and political science. 

The admitted cohort also hails from around the globe with 96 different countries represented in the group. The top five are China, Canada, India, the United Kingdom and South Korea. 

Domestically, students from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands were part of the accepted cohort. The top states represented in the class of 2028 are California, New York, Massachusetts, Texas, New Jersey, Florida, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Georgia.

Additionally, 65% of admitted applicants indicated an intention to apply for financial aid, a slight decrease from the 68% of the class of 2027 who did so. 

With a tumultuous rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the University has communicated to students that aid eligibility may be determined via the CSS Profile and federal tax returns, according to Powell. But when the University does receive a student’s FAFSA, “the components of the aid offer may change, but the total grant and scholarship funding will remain the same.”

Admitted students will head to College Hill for the Office of Admission’s annual admitted students day — A Day on College Hill — on April 12 and 19.

The University will also continue to review student veteran applications on a rolling basis which is expected to conclude in April. The population of student veterans on campus has doubled since 2019.

Regular decision accepted applicants have until May 1 to accept their offer of admission while early decision applicants are contractually obligated to join the class of 2028. Nearly two-thirds of accepted students joined the class of 2027 on campus last fall.
