According to the APA, the style originated in 1929, when a group of psychologists, anthropologists, and business managers decided to establish a simple set of procedures, or style rules, to bring uniformity to the elements of scientific writing to increase the ease of reading comprehension.

In a reference paper, article, blog post or any other published work, writers must give credit to their sources. Failing to do so, even if you have completely reworded the information or summarized the information, is considered to be plagiarism. Is the work anonymous, or without a byline?   See below.

Is the work anonymous, or without a byline?

• Sometimes newspaper articles and dictionary or encyclopedia entries don't have an author attributed.
• Only list the author as "anonymous" if the article has been attributed to "Anonymous" or "Anon". If there is no attribution, follow the advice below.

When there is no attributed author, move the title of the work to the first position in the reference list. In text, use the title of the document in "quotation marks" where you would use the author's name. For long titles, it is okay to use only the first few words.

In the Body of a Paper

Books, Journals, Reports, Webpages, etc.: When you refer to titles of a “stand-alone work,” as the APA calls them on their APA Style website, such as books, journals, reports, and webpages, you should italicize them. Capitalize words as you would for an article title in a reference, e.g., In the book Crying in H Mart: A memoir , author Michelle Zauner (2021) describes her biracial origin and its impact on her identity.

Article or Chapter: When you refer to the title of a part of a work, such as an article or a chapter, put quotation marks around the title and capitalize it as you would for a journal title in a reference, e.g., In the chapter “Where’s the Wine,” Zauner (2021) describes how she decided to become a musician.

An APA Style newspaper citation includes the author, the publication date, the headline of the article, and the name of the newspaper in italics.

Print newspaper citations include a page number or range; online newspaper citations include a URL.

Printed newspapers are sometimes divided into sections, which are identified by a letter before the page number (e.g. A1, B4). Always include the letters when page numbers are formatted in this way.

If you accessed the article on the newspaper’s website , include a URL instead of page numbers.

Don’t use the newspaper citation format for articles on news sites, such as Reuters and BBC News, that are not linked to a print newspaper.

Instead, use the format of a website citation . The article title is italicized, and the name of the site is written in plain text.

When no individual author name is listed, but the source can clearly be attributed to a specific organization—e.g., a press release by a charity, a report by an agency, or a page from a company’s website—use the organization’s name as the author in the reference entry and APA in-text citations .

When no author at all can be determined—e.g. a collaboratively edited wiki or an online article published anonymously—use the title in place of the author. In the in-text citation, put the title in quotation marks if it appears in plain text in the reference list, and in italics if it appears in italics in the reference list. Shorten it if necessary.

When you quote or paraphrase a specific passage from a source, you need to indicate the location of the passage in your APA in-text citation . If there are no page numbers (e.g. when citing a website ) but the text is long, you can instead use section headings, paragraph numbers, or a combination of the two:

Section headings can be shortened if necessary. Kindle location numbers should not be used in ebook citations , as they are unreliable.

If you are referring to the source as a whole, it’s not necessary to include a page number or other marker.

The abbreviation “ et al. ” (meaning “and others”) is used to shorten APA in-text citations with three or more authors . Here’s how it works:

Only include the first author’s last name, followed by “et al.”, a comma and the year of publication, for example (Taylor et al., 2018).

APA Style usually does not require an access date. You never need to include one when citing journal articles , e-books , or other stable online sources.

However, if you are citing a website or online article that’s designed to change over time, it’s a good idea to include an access date. In this case, write it in the following format at the end of the reference: Retrieved October 19, 2020, from https://www.uva.nl/en/about-the-uva/about-the-university/about-the-university.html

Wondering how to cite a newspaper article in APA 7? You’re in the right place. Citing a newspaper article is simple, but the correct format varies depending on where you found the article. The three sources for newspaper articles are print version, online, and database, and each of them has a slightly different format for the citation.

The guidelines for citing the print version of a newspaper article are basically the same as those obtained from online and a data base. These guidelines can serve as your template for citing the articles from the other sources. There will be only a few minor variations that you will have to remember that distinguish the online format from the others.

How to Cite a Newspaper Article from a Print Source

In-Text citation (paraphrase): 

(Last name of author, Year)

(Williams, 2019)

Research indicates that teenagers who spend more than four hours a day on social media internalize their problems, such as anxiety and depression (Williams, 2019).  

In-Text citation (quotation)

(Last name of author, Year, page number)

(Williams, 2019, p. A8)

For many teenagers, social media is an extension of their lives, and according to a 2018 Pew Research Center poll, “digital media use by adolescents is common: 95% report owning or having access to a smartphone, and almost 90% report they are online at least several times a day” (Williams, 2019, p. A8).

Reference list

Unlike other sources, for newspaper articles, you need to provide the page number(s) in the reference list. If the article continues on a subsequent page, write it like this: A8-A9. If the article does not continue on a subsequent page, provide all the page numbers separated by a comma like this: A8, A10.

Last name of author, First Initial. (Year, Month Day). Article title. Newspaper Title , page number(s).

Williams, J. (2019, September 12). Social media use may increase teens’ risk of mental health issues, U.S. News , A8.

How to Cite a Newspaper Article With no Author in APA

In-Text citation (no author)

Some newspapers do not have an author listed. For the in-text citation, provide the title of the article in quotation marks. If the title is long, you can use the first three or four words. The title is not written in sentence form like it is written in the reference list. 

(“Title of the Article”, Year, (page number for quotation only)

(“Social media use may increase”, 2019)

(“Social media use may increase”, 2019, p. A8)

Reference list (no author)

Title of the article. (Year, Month Day). Newspaper Title , page number(s). 

Social media use may increase teens risk of mental health issues. (2019, September 12). U.S. News , A8.

How to Cite Online Newspaper Articles in APA Style

The difference between citing a newspaper article obtained online and citing a print version is that you need to also provide the URL where you obtained the article in the reference list. You do not need to provide the page number(s) in the reference list. 

In-Text Citation (Paraphrase): 

(Metz, 2019)

Quantum computers are able to process more data than other types of computers because they encode information in ephemeral waves (Metz, 2019).

In-Text Citation (Quotation)

Usually, the online articles do not have page numbers. Therefore, provide the paragraph number of the quotation. 

(Last name of author, Year, page or paragraph number)

(Metz, 2019, p. A8)

(Metz, 2019, para. 11)

 “Quantum computers manipulate qubits with exquisite control, allowing for the interference of information, like waves on a pond, to amplify the answers we seek in a sea of possibilities” (Metz, 2019, para. 2)

How to Cite Newspaper Article From a Database in APA Style

You may obtain a newspaper article from a database, such as EBSCO, ProQuest, and Opposing Viewpoints, accessed through a college library’s website. The guidelines for writing in-text citations for an article from a database are the same as those for print and online sources. The only difference is the guidelines for the reference list. If the URL of the article does not take the reader to it, provide the URL of the database home/login page. 

Last Name of Author. First Initial. (Year, Month Day). Title of article. Database Name. URL of Database or home/login page.

Notes About Author, Date, Title, and Source 

Author 

• List each author alphabetically by the authors last name and first name initial(s) in the order they appeared in the article.  Do not include titles, positions, or ranks in the authors name.
• Separate the authors by commas and the ampersand "&" sign (for the last author). 
• If citing a group author, use the entire group name.  
• If a source has no author or group author, move the title to the author position and alphabetize it accordingly in the reference list. 
• Enclose the date of publication  put the year first, followed by the month and/or day separated by a comma. For Example: (2020, July 18). 
• If the publication date is unknown or cannot be determined, list the date as n.d. (which stands for no date). For example: (n.d.).  

Article Title 

• The first word of the title and subtitle is capitalized as are proper nouns but all other words are lowercase. For example: Digital screen time limits and young children's psychological well-being: Evidence from a population-based study. 
• If a title ends with a question mark or exclamation point, use those punctuation marks instead of a period at the end. 

Newspaper title 

• The name of the newspaper is italicized with all major words capitalized. 

Page Numbers 

• List both the section and page number. You do not include p. or pp. For example: C5
• For online newspapers include the URL.

Newspaper articles — APA 6th edition

The 7th edition of APA was published in October 2019. Some departments and lecturers may still be using the 6th edition. Ask your lecturer or supervisor if you are unsure which edition to use.

Important elements

• Exact date in format: (Year, Month Day)
• Newspaper article title
• Newspaper title in italics
• If online: include URL otherwise include a page number

Services like Stuff or Scoop aggregate news content. Don't use Stuff as the title or author.

No newspaper title

If there is no newspaper title, just use the author, date, article title and URL, e.g.

• Use a few words of the title or the whole title if it is short
• Use title case (capitals for every major word) in the body of the paper
