George K explains that fashion separates individuals from the rest. A person can introduce himself to others for who and what he is through style choices. Further, the author expounds on how fashion is a very competitive industry that depends on one’s search for identity. The author also points out that every person is unique and thus needs a distinct style to fit them. However, because of constant peer pressure and criticism, an individual’s fashion picks can’t be entirely their own. Ultimately, George K reminds the reader that it’s not just the clothes but how individuals wear and feel in them.

“…if we can do something then it is choosing the right stuff like entertainment, adventure, fashion, etc. All these things can make us happy and are also an important part of life. Fashion always attracts and it is available for all,”

In the following sections of the essay, she defines fashion and lists its importance, including how it developed new employment options and how styles speak for the wearer.

In her conclusion, she encourages everyone to choose their styles and not to mind their age. Fashion helps everyone live life to the fullest.

“Fashion is an industry based on creating a need where there is none and nowadays, due to the current recession, I can understand that fashion may not be people’s biggest concern. Summers ends her essay by highlighting that fashion is too essential in modern culture and economic organization for it to be considered “trivial.”

“…the youth cares more about what they wear and how they look which could affect their status in their peer group and meddle with their mental health. Following trends and doing what everyone is doing like a sheep is never a good idea. Fashion is there to reflect your personal style, not copying what other people think is trendy.”

User Edudwar reminds people that fashion is not simply following what’s currently trendy. Fashion is there to give people the chance to show off their individualism and personalities and not present a fake version of themselves to be accepted by society. Additionally, he mentions that youth nowadays are more sensitive to what people think of them, so some will always do everything to follow trends, even if they’re not presentable or appropriate.

“Youths of the present times have indulged themselves in so much fashion that they do not receive sufficient time for other work
The time spent on studies is being used in watching TV programmes, reading fashion articles, or even finding the recent trendy outfits on the Internet.”

The essay discusses the real effects of fashion on today’s youth. The essay also delves into how youths of yesterday had ambitions and goals in life compared to today’s youths, who prefer to have fun rather than study hard.

Essay on Fashion

500+ words essay on fashion.

Fashion is one of the most talked-about industries in today’s world. Fashion can be defined as anything that becomes admirable among the masses. It is a popular aesthetic expression. Fashion is related to clothing, hairstyle, makeup, accessories, footwear and lifestyle. People want to distinguish their personalities from others with their style quotient. Like every new year, fashion also comes and goes. The latest fashion will be more fashionable and colourful than last year.

New trends in fashion influence people of all ages. There is a tremendous amount of competition between the industry and consumers. Different cultures and nationalities have different styles of fashion. Due to this reason, it is always fascinating to travel to various parts of the world to observe how people dress in those countries. Now, clothes have become one of the main reasons to express themselves instead of merely covering their body.

Different people need different styles and designs for their uniqueness and personality before wearing that specific fashion design. This essay will talk more about fashion history, importance and trends.

History of Fashion

Fashion is all about the history of people. For thousands of years, people have loved fashionable clothing. Clothes, from the early days of Egypt, have become our expression. We can see fashion worn in various civilisations throughout history, documents, drawings, and other archaeological findings. Eastern neighbours influenced clothes of different styles worn by the Greeks. Both males and females used to wear thick woollen long dresses.

During ancient times, Egyptians used to wear light cotton clothing, and Egyptian women wore long, ready-made clothes. Later on, the Romans dominated the most significant example of fashion and style.

When people started migrating to Europe, accordingly, the style changed. To keep themselves warm, women used to wear warm clothes and men plain and armour clothes.

Since there were not enough raw materials to produce new clothes for people who migrated to America in that era, dresses were ordered and sent to the oceans by ships to cope with the demand. Suits with leggings were men’s attire, and women wore long clothes and hats on their heads. Over time, the form of the dresses transferred from voluminous dresses into soft, frequent, high-waisted skirts.

Women’s skirts were shorter and thinner at the beginning of the century. Trousers of men slowly went from ankle to knee-length. During the World Wars, women’s style transformed into shorter skirts below the knee.

The ‘80s brought significant trends related to fashion and hairstyles for both genders. The transitional fashion period is from the sixties and seventies. During this time, women wearing trousers became acceptable.

From the 20th century to the 21st century, fashion change continued, and still today, it is evolving.

Fashion Trend

When we talk about influencing fashion, political influencers play a vital role. There are a lot of instances where politicians become fashion symbols, like Princess Diana and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Political revolutions also left a significant impact on fashion trends.

Technology is another significant factor that influences fashion. The fashion industry saw rapid growth in technology such as 3D printing technology, wearable technology, etc. The Internet also affects fashion trends.

People are influenced by their favourite stars, influencers, etc. The strongest influencers in the field of fashion are social media influencers. Young stars try to emulate the fashion styles of their loved celebrities. For example, hoodies came into fashion due to rap musicians. Television and movie stars also influence fashion trends.

It’s entirely up to you to be fashionable; it shouldn’t be forceful, and it is your own decision what you want to follow. Our fashion sense also reflects our culture. It makes our life colourful and adds variety to life, providing an opportunity to try out something new. Though this time of the 21st century in India, most people are influenced by the style of fashion, they have not forgotten our traditions and culture, which are the priority and symbol of our country.

Essay about Clothes and Personality

Introduction.

Does fashion make personality? The way you dress says a lot about the kind of individual you are. The fashion you decide to go with should reveal your desires, interests, ambition, and background. Everyone is unique in terms of personality and interest, and therefore, it is important for a person to wear what emphasizes who they are. There are people who are wild and like to explore, while others prefer styles that add nostalgia and romance (Bell 45).

As clothes define a person, this essay addresses how crucial it is to know who you are so that you can choose a style that fits your personality. In addition, be sure to be consistent with your style to create a signature that describes you as an individual. The fashion we choose to go with should match our personality because people can easily judge us from our dress code (Bell 47). In this essay about clothes and personality, I will discuss how fashion makes an individual’s character.

While most individuals find it easy to conform to other people’s fashion, it is extremely important for people to identify what suits them best and incorporate that in their own style to distinguish their personality. In fashion, being different is an important aspect because it helps individual personality to stand out.

In the movie the “Devil wears Prada”, which is created around fashion, we can easily identify roles of the characters by observing their dress codes. While Anna is dressed in simple clothes that do not have a voice in fashion, Miranda is dressed in timeless fashion that gives her the rich woman’s look ( The devil wears prada ). On the other hand, Andrea was given an over the edge fashion that showed the outgoing and careless look in the movie ( The devil wear prada ).

In addition to this, it is not difficult to notice that Field had a good idea about fashion and personality based on the outfits and make up for her characters. The looks and fashion in this movie was able to give the characters stage personalities that were outstanding from the other. This is a clear indication that what we put on talks much about who we are.

Although, it takes time to develop one’s style and fashion it is important for individuals to be in a position to say who they are through their dressing. Having individual dress code helps in boosting self-confidence and brings comfort (Bell 113). Your image is highly dependent on how you dress on a regular basis because people learn to associate you with the kind of fashion you embrace.

When it comes to fashion and personality, make sure that when people see a certain fashion they can actually identify that look with your personality. Learn to leave a mark in what is in your wardrobe to ensure that your clothes speak loud about the kind of a person you are; let your clothes define you more than words can do.

People who are dramatic and casual like to make strong fashion statements also tend to be stunning and attention seeking (Musselman and DeGregori 47). For this kind of personality, choose bold colors, straight lines, and unique outstanding jewelry to match your outfits (Musselman and DeGregori 47). A dramatic personality seeks attention at all times and wants to make a strong statement (Bell 121).

A dramatic personality goes well with clothes that are fashionable and overshadow other people. Their class of fashion is able to help people notice their personality even for those meeting them for the first time. However, if someone with a dramatic personality decided to dress like a classic personality he or she would look out of place. Therefore, it is advisable to have fashion that clearly highlights who you are from far.

For those people with a serious personality, and mostly like having a classic look, they should have clothes with straight lines, neutral colors such as gray, white and black, flat shoes, and striped tops (Musselman and DeGregori 56). This is what makes them stand out as no nonsense people and enables them to get people’s attention at first glance. In addition, this kind of fashion portrays people with very strong personality, focused and in control (Bell 78).

However, when blending fashion with personality it is wise to choose clothes that match your body shape. Clothes should highlight on your strong points and conceal physical faults (Musselman and DeGregori 94). Women with a classic personality are conservative and prefer simple fashion that is well balanced. In addition, they like simple accessories that stand the test of time such as plain gold chain. This type of fashion screams that “am intelligent, simple, and focused” (Bell 113).

On the other hand, there is ingénue and romantic personality that always appears young and girlish with a small body (Musselman and DeGregori 73). Young girls always look cute and charming because of their small physique. In addition, they have a love for things that are nice and more feminine such as fragile jewelry, ruffles, lace, and soft fabrics (Musselman and DeGregori 77).

Because of their personality, such people are likely to be taken less serious and considered childish by most people. This is the weakness associated with this personality but people can be able to combine their dressing with other aspects to make their personality clearly represented without misjudgment. However, this personality enables women to be more feminine and attractive compared to other personalities hence if it is combined with other types of fashion it creates a balanced style.

The way we dress says so much about our personality especially in instances where we have to make a first impression. Our fashion speaks volumes about the kind of people we are in terms of interests, ambitions, and aspirations. A person in jeans and t-shirt appears to be relaxed while, one in a suit creates the impression of focus, alert and serious.

On the other hand, a person in an inadequate dress creates the impression that she is wild, free spirited and easy to hang around. People can draw assumptions about us or our social preference from the way we dress. Therefore, it is important for people to make independent choices for fashion to ensure that we create the right impression about ourselves. While it may not be possible for one to pick a single style or fashion, it is wise to incorporate some aspects of other fashions to emphasize on their personality.

For instance, if you are dramatic and realize that people brush you off you can add some elements of classic in your style to achieve the desired results. Some classic fashion elements will let people respect and take you a serious individual. However, if you are a classic and people are not able to see your fun and charming side, adding some element of dramatic personality in your fashion is more appropriate.

Introduction

Fashion is a non-verbal way of communication that conveys a lot about the person’s personality, background and style. Earlier it was exclusively the world of the affluent, celebrities and royalty. However, fashion is now within the reach of the common man, especially the youth. Besides, dress fashion is an evolution of ideas, which begins as a fad, but in course of time gets accepted in society as a style, which could be in attire, behaviour or lifestyle. Fashion is mostly associated with glamour. It makes people feel confident and bold. People can express themselves openly. Today fashion is not limited to western countries; now, every country has come out with their fashion sense, not only the clothing but the accent of that country, the living style.

Vedantu experts have crafted an essay on fashion that covers its significance and how it reflects in your personality. This essay has promoted the thought perfectly that fashion is also about carrying yourself in society without having an attractive or trendy attire.  It is about being comfortable with yourself and not being a doppelganger of another person.

Why is Fashion Important?

Fashion is important because it reflects the culture of a country. It makes our life colourful and changes our life with time. In a way it also adds variety to life, providing an opportunity in trying out something new. Fashion is not only limited to clothing or makeup but in a much broader sense includes accessories like shoes, perfume, hairstyle, mannerism, etiquette and attitude towards life. Fashion is not restricted to self-expression only but also a means of self-empowerment and confidence. It encompasses the total spectrum of human activity, which relates to a specific period. It is an outlook of life.

Fashion is how you carry yourself in society without wearing anything trendy. It is how you attempt to make yourself look flawless even without any make-up. It helps you in revealing your true identity.

Evolution of Fashion

The world of fashion is always evolving.  It is amazing to see how the different events in history have influenced and changed the way people dressed and looked throughout time. Thus long dresses, veiled headgear that was trends of the Victorian era, have been replaced with micro and mini dresses and the jeans culture associated with the modern era.

From the 1920s to the 1990s fashion just not changed in clothing but also in accessories, footwear and hairstyles. The trends of wearing hats, carrying purses, shoes and men wearing long ties and bows have been continuously changing with periods, occasions and culture.

Hairstyles also have been changing throughout time. Short boyish haircuts were popular during the 1920s to 1940s. Wigs were more popular in the 1960s and thereafter hairstyles kept changing from short to bob cut then to mid-back cut and now maintaining long hair.

Fashion Industry

As fashion evolved, the industry was formulated to manage the process for the consumers. The fashion world has given shape to a new industry, the ‘Fashion Industry’.

The fashion industry was created to design, manufacture and market clothes, footwear and accessories. Before creating the apparel industry, people made clothes for themselves. The mass production of clothing began in the mid-nineties when some creators began to make garments that did not require any fitting session with the tailors. The fashion industry in its true sense was established in the twentieth century when the neighbourhood tailors decided to become the manufacturing business.

Fashion impacting the Youth

The positive side of fashion is it enhances your life. It not only allows you to dress fashionably but also allows being independent in thinking and maintaining self-esteem. At the same time, fashion is negatively impacting the youth. It has taken up the life of the youth so much that the youngsters are highly obsessed with creating style statements at an age where they need to focus on their studies and other important aspects of life. The fashion trend has become a cult with today’s generation. They blindly try to imitate the models and celebrities without understanding the true essence of fashion.

Impact of fashion on teenagers

What is the importance of fashion?

The need is therefore to strike a balance between being fashionable and wearing what suits you. The young generation needs to understand that fashion in the true sense is the attitude that you carry and just not fashionable clothes and accessories.

FAQs on Fashion Essay

1. What is the core of fashion?

Fashion is not only about wearing trendy clothes or footwear. The core of fashion lies inside the person. Fashionable core comes active when you wear something with confidence to show your choices to the world. And that is the only thing to make fashion a trend from time to time. Vedantu experts, after a detailed study, have explained this stuff, and that’s what makes an essay on fashion a complete package to deliver to the audience.

2. How is fashion impacting today’s generation?

Fashion affects today’s generation with its useless and dented influence that fashion is limited to costly clothes and gadgets. Teenagers are easy targets for those who consider themselves influential personalities under the name of fashion. Many of the time, the child gets intrigued by looking at the lifestyle of another person. They fall into the eye-pleasing trap and try to copy the same. It leads them to lose their own identity and wear fake costly attire to please their hunger for recognition among their friends.

Fashion is nothing more than a term for the things that makes you comfortable and enhance your confidence in being you.

5. Are fashion and trends different?

Yes, fashion and trends are different. The trend follows the fashion; fashion never leaves the frame, it gets highlighted from time to time, and at some particular time, it becomes a trend that everybody follows. Trends have a short life, but fashion stays for life. It gets older with time, like the dhoti kurta culture of India has become old, but it gets rejuvenated with the new look, and it becomes a trend for a while. Fashion is more real than trends.

6. What is Fashion?

Fashion is self-expression in the form of clothing, accessories, footwear, hairstyle, perfume, etiquettes and attitude.

7. Who is known as the Father of Fashion?

Charles Frederick Worth is known as the father of fashion.

Fashion has become a cult in this modern era. Youngsters especially blindly want to imitate celebrities and models. They are forgetting the true essence of fashion. They think that fashion is confined to only clothing, footwear and accessories.

9. Why is Fashion Important?

Fashion is important because it is the reflection of our society and culture.

Long Essay on Importance and Role of Fashion in Today’s Life – Essay 5 (600 words)

Fashion has become an integral part of our society in the modern times. We belong to a society where people give importance to the look of a person more than anything else. A person’s social status and personality is judged looking at his outward appearance. People follow the latest fashion trends to look and feel good and impress others.

Fashion: To Keep Pace with the Society

People these days have become extremely judgemental and more than a person’s mannerism and character, they give importance to his/ her physical appearance. A person who dresses up according to the latest fashion and style is liked by everyone around. Everyone likes to befriend such a person. He/she becomes an inspiration for the others. People mistake this outward beauty for intelligence and seek opinion from such people and like to socialise with them.

It is as if following fashion has become essential to keep up with the pace of the society. A person who is well-dressed as per the latest fashion is looked upon by others.

Different Places; Different Fashion Trends

India is a land of varied cultures. The culture of a place plays an important role in setting the fashion trend of that place. While the Kanchivaram saree is in fashion in Tamil Nadu, short kurti and patiala salwar is in vogue in Punjab. Likewise, tunics, churidars and pherans are in fashion in Kashmir while lungi is in style in Kerela. The cuts and patterns of these attires keep changing with times and people follow these latest trends.

Fashion: Inspired by Celebrities

While the fashion trends in different regions of India are different, people living in the metropolitan cities in the country follow a rather common trend mostly inspired by Bollywood celebrities.

New fashion trends come to life with new movies and television shows. New look is rendered to the actors in every new release in order to make their characters look different. New kinds of attires, hair styles and accessories are introduced and they become a rage among the people.

The people in our country look up to the Bollywood celebrities as style icons. They keep a tab on every new trend followed by them and try to incorporate them. Many a times, the T-shirts, dresses, suits, shoes, belts and jewellery worn by the celebrities become extremely popular among the masses. Replicas of their designer wear are made available in the market and are sold like hot buns.

These trends stay for a few weeks or months and are replaced by new ones. People do not hesitate changing their wardrobe with the changing fashion.

Fashion: Inspired by the West

Today, most of the fashion trends in India have been inspired by the west. Gone are the days when people only wore sarees, salwar kameez and kurta pyjamas. The youth of the country is inspired by the western culture and this does not only reflect in their thinking but also in the fashion trends they follow.

The girls are seen wearing different types of western outfits including jeans, T-shirts, skirts, frocks and shorts among other clothing items. Boys also prefer wearing trousers, shorts, denim jeans and T-shirts rather than the Indian attires. The western clothes appear more liberating and comfortable and these have thus become a fashion here.

Indian Fashion Designers: Inspiring the West

We haven’t only drawn inspiration from the west but have also inspired them when it comes to fashion. The comfortable cotton kurtas and designer Indian sarees have become quite popular in the western countries. Flaunting a bindi has also become a fashion trend among the women in the west.

Thus, fashion holds an important place in the life of people today. It has become a way of expression. As Bill Cunningham puts it, “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life”.

1. How to Describe Clothes

Justin: Hello, Molotov Fashions, how can I help?

Maria: Hi! Yeah, I made an order online, but there’s a problem with it.

J: I’m sorry to hear that. What’s the problem exactly?

M: I ordered a floral-print silk scarf, but you’ve sent me a patterned wool scarf instead.

J: I’m sorry to hear that. What was your order number?

J: Let me see
Yes, I see it now. So, you can return the silk scarf using the label you received in your package. I see you also ordered a striped cotton top. Did that arrive okay?

M: Actually, no! You sent me a plain denim shirt.

J: Oh, I am sorry! We really messed that up. So, you can return those two items, and we’ll send out your leather jacket and your velour tracksuit.

M: Leather jacket?! Velour?! What are you talking about? Look, maybe I’ll just return the items for a refund.

J: Of course. I’m sorry, our computer systems are a little unreliable.

M: You don’t say.

In this dialogue, you heard different words to describe patterns and materials. Can you remember any?

You saw these words for patterns:

  • floral-print

There’s one common pattern which is missing. Do you know it?

You could also have check clothing, for example a check shirt. You can say check or checked —the meaning is the same.

You can use print with many different things. For example, you could have a fruit-print dress, or an eagle-print T-shirt.

You can use patterned for any clothing which has some kind of pattern which doesn’t fit any of the other words.

What about materials? Can you remember the words from the dialogue?

You heard these words for materials:

Velour is a kind of soft material. It’s not so common.

If you’re talking about clothes and you want to describe the pattern and the material, put the pattern first. For example:

  • a floral-print silk scarf
  • a striped cotton top

Talking About Clothes in English - man in striped shirt

Now, it’s your turn to practice! Pause the video and make three sentences to describe your clothing. Include the pattern and the material. You can say your sentences out loud, or write them down.

2. Talking About Fit and Style

J: So, what do you think?

M: It’s okay, but it’s a little loose, and the sleeves aren’t long enough.

J: Would you like to try a smaller size?

M: But then the sleeves will be even shorter! I think I need to try something else.

J: How’s that one? It looks like a good fit to me!

M: Hmm
It’s a little tight around the shoulders.

J: I think it goes well with your shoes. Did I mention that we have a 20% discount today?

M: I’m not sure about the style, either. It’s a little too hipster for me.

J: Would you like to try something else?

M: No, I don’t think so. Thanks for your help.

When you buy new clothes, of course you want them to fit well and look good.

But, sometimes they don’t fit well. They might be too tight or too loose.

Maybe it’s just too big or small in one place. Then, you could say something like:

  • It’s tight around the shoulders.
  • It’s too big around the waist.

Notice how you say the shoulders and not my shoulders.

What other problems could you have with how clothes fit? Do you remember what happened in the dialogue?

You could also say:

  • The sleeves aren’t long enough.
  • The collar is too tight.

Useful words here are too and enough. You can use them to express similar ideas, like this:

  • The sleeves are too short.

With these phrases, you can talk about fit, but what about style?

If something doesn’t match your personal tastes, you could say something like:

  • It’s too casual for me.
  • It’s too old-fashioned for me.
  • It’s too fancy for me.

When the shop assistant in the dialogue was trying to persuade me to buy something, he said:

  • It goes well with your shoes.

This is one way to say that something looks good on someone. You could also say something like:

  • It matches your eyes.

We have a question for you: what’s your personal style? Do you prefer smart clothes, or casual? Plain, or colourful? Let us know in the comments!

Next, let’s look at some more ways to compliment someone on their clothing.

3. How to Compliment Someone’s Clothes

M: Is that a new shirt?

J: Yeah! Do you like it?

M: I do! It looks good on you.

M: It makes you look much slimmer.

J: What do you mean?

M: I mean
 I just
I like the fit; that’s what I meant to say.

M: Don’t be so moody! You look very smart. You should wear smart clothes more often. It’s a good look for you!

J: I’ll try to find more clothes that make me look slimmer, then.

M: Oh, don’t be ridiculous.

So, if you want to compliment someone on their clothes, what can you say?

You can use phrases you heard before, like it suits you, but in the dialogue you heard some more phrases, such as:

  • That looks good on you!
  • It’s a good look for you.

You could also comment on a particular aspect of the clothing:

  • I like the fit!
  • I like the style!
  • I like the colours!

You can also make a more personal compliment, like this:

  • It makes you look slimmer.
  • You look very smart.

You can use these phrases in different ways. For example:

  • It makes you look younger.
  • You look very elegant.

Talking About Clothes in English - elegantly dressed woman

Now, you can describe clothes in detail, talk about the fit and style of clothes, and compliment people on their clothes in English.

There’s one more thing we have to show you.

4. Clothing Phrasal Verbs

J: Are you ready?

M: Don’t tell me you’re going like that!

M: It’s a formal event. You need to dress up. Go get changed!

J: This okay?

M: No! You need to put on a tie. And take off those awful shoes.

J: But these are the only shoes I have!

M: You are a nightmare! Well, we have just about enough time. We’ll stop at the shop on the way and buy you some black shoes.

J: What if they don’t fit? I need time to try them on before I buy them.

M: You should have thought about that earlier.

There are many phrasal verbs connected with clothing. Can you remember the ones you heard in the dialogue?

There are simple verbs, like put on and
 Wait, what’s the opposite?

Did you say put off? We hope not! The opposite of put on is take off.

If you need to put on some different clothes, then you need to get changed.

There are other verb phrases with get, like get dressed or get undressed.

If you’re shopping for new clothes , you should certainly try them on before you buy them, to make sure they fit and look good.

And finally, if you’re going to a formal event, you’ll need to dress up. Dress up means you put on your smartest, nicest clothes, usually for a special occasion.

Keep practicing with this Oxford Online English lesson on phrasal verbs .

Essay on Clothes – Some have it in accordance to the latest trending vogue in the market, after scrutinizing for hours the innumerable fashion magazines, while others set out to be the visionaries in the field, creating and endorsing their own ‘label’. And still, there is yet another category who adorns it attributing to the mood swings they are going through, Clothes have evolved from being a mere covering to the body to the one that complements an individual’s whole personality, thus defining whether the person is outgoing or cultural, boisterous or taciturn, modest or clumsy.

Essay on Clothes

Available in indefinite sizes, small, large and extra-large, with fabrics ranging from khadi to nylon and cotton to silk, Clothes are one of the Indispensable necessities for the survival of humankind, which defies any classification pertaining to richness or age. Right from the Stone Age, clothes have served their basic primary purpose of providing protection from the negative effects of the environs, namely heat and cold, dust and rain, although the pre- historic apparels were an animal’s skin and the present age attires are of animal’s print. Varieties of clothes are inexhaustible, from cotton, light- colored clothes in summers to the woolen, furry jackets and sweaters in the winters, casual tees for an outing with a friend and bejeweled ethnics for that same friend’s wedding. Even different regions have their own indigenous clothing, the extremity of which is evident in India itself, ghaghra- choli in Gujarat and saree in Maharashtra, lungi in Tamil Nadu and kurta- pajama in Bihar.

Life without air is definitely impossible but life without clothes is surely indignant, if not unreasonable, it is because of this reason that donating clothes is no less than providing a hungry food, or giving the homeless shelter. Clothes have an eminent role to play and the proof can be statistically claimed with the burgeoning number of customers attracted by a small garments shop even in a remote locality.

English Short Essay on “Washing Clothes” English Paragraph/Speech for Class 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 CBSE Students and competitive Examination.

Washing Clothes

Washing clothes is not easy. The skill has to be learnt and mastered. What discourages a person is the tedious and tiresome efforts one has to make in washing Inspite of the availability of modern detergent powders, it remains a difficult exercise. An expert knows which portions of a particular piece of dress needs special care and attention. The collars of shirts, the seat and pockets of pants are generally dirtier than the other parts. But to wash well what you require most is patience and the knowledge of the clothes you are washing. You can then discriminate between clothes which can be put in warm water and which must never be put in a bucket of hot water. Rub them well. Then remove the soap, by washing in clean water.

Scientists Just Gave Humanity an Overdue Reality Check. The World Will Be Better for It.

A crowded freeway in Los Angeles against the setting sun.

By Stephen Lezak

Mr. Lezak is a researcher at the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford who studies the politics of climate change.

The world’s leading institution on geology declined a proposal on Wednesday to confirm that the planet has entered a new geologic epoch , doubling down on its bombshell announcement earlier this month. The notion that we’re in the “Anthropocene” — the proposed name for a geologic period defined by extensive human disturbance — has become a common theme in environmental circles for the last 15 years. To many proponents, the term is an essential vindication, the planetary equivalent of a long-sought diagnosis of a mysterious illness. But geologists weren’t convinced.

The international geology commission’s decision this week to uphold its vote of 12 to 4 may seem confusing, since by some measures humans have already become the dominant geologic force on the earth’s surface. But setting the science aside for a moment, there’s a reason to celebrate, because the politics behind the Anthropocene label were rotten to begin with.

For starters, the word Anthropocene problematically implies that humans as a species are responsible for the sorry state of the earth’s environments. While technically true, only a fraction of humanity, driven by greed and rapacious capitalism, is responsible for burning through the planet’s resources at an unsustainable rate. Billions of humans still lead lives with relatively modest environmental footprints, yet the terminology of the Anthropocene wrongly lays blame at their feet. Responding to the vote, a group of outside scientists wisely noted in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution that “our impacts have less to do with being human and more to do with ways of being human.”

What’s more, inaugurating a new geologic epoch is an unacceptable act of defeatism. Geologic epochs are not fleeting moments. The shortest one, the Holocene — the one we live in — is 11,700 years long and counting. The idea that we are entering a new epoch defined by human-caused environmental disaster implies that we won’t be getting out of this mess anytime soon. In that way, the Anthropocene forecloses on the possibility that the geologic future might be better than the present.

By placing Homo sapiens center stage, the Anthropocene also deepens a stark and inaccurate distinction between humanity and the planet that sustains us. The idea of “nature” as something separate from humankind is a figment of the Western imagination. We should be wary of language that further separates us from the broader constellation of life to which we belong.

Before the recent vote, the Anthropocene epoch had cleared several key hurdles on the path to scientific consensus. The International Commission on Stratigraphy, the global authority on demarcating the planet’s history, established a dedicated working group in 2009. Ten years later, the group formally recommended adopting the new epoch. But the proposal still had to be approved by a matryoshka doll of committees within the commission and its parent body, the International Union of Geological Sciences.

By all accounts, the process leading up to the vote was highly contentious. After the initial vote was held, scientists in the minority called for it to be annulled , citing procedural issues. This week, the committee’s parent authority stepped in to uphold the results.

Ultimately, what scuttled the proposal was disagreement about where to mark the end of the Holocene. The Anthropocene Working Group had settled on 1952, the year that airborne plutonium residue from testing hydrogen bombs fell across broad stretches of the planet. That ash, scientists reasoned, would leave a sedimentary signature akin to the boundaries that mark ancient geologic transitions. But scientists at the stratigraphy commission objected — what about the dawn of agriculture or the Industrial Revolution? After all, the human footprint on the planet long predates the atomic age.

“It’s very obvious to me that human activity started long before 1952,” Phil Gibbard, a founding member of the Anthropocene Working Group who is the secretary-general of the commission, said when we spoke on Thursday. “It just didn’t make sense to draw a rigid boundary within my lifetime.”

In recent years, philosophers have bandied about alternative names: the Capitalocene , the Plantationocene and even the Ravencene , a reference to the raven who figures widely in North Pacific Indigenous mythology as a trickster figure, reminding humans to be humble amid our destructive capacity. For my part, I’m partial to “post-Holocene,” an admission that the world is vastly different than it was 10,000 years ago, but that we can’t possibly predict — or name — what it might look like in another 10,000 years.

In the end, it might be too late to find a better term. The “Anthropocene” has already entered the popular lexicon, from the cover of The Economist to the title of a Grimes album. The scientists who coined the term do not have the power to extinguish it.

Whatever we choose to call these troubled times, what matters most is that we keep an open mind about what the future holds and maintain an appreciation for the complexity of the issues we face. The scars humanity leaves upon the earth are much too fraught to be represented with a single line drawn across time.

Looking ahead, we should follow the geologists’ lead and keep a healthy skepticism of the A-word. After all, nothing is more hubristic than reckless tyrants who names the world after themselves — think Stalingrad, Constantinople or Alexandria.

Geologists will continue to disagree over what to call the present era. The rest of us must continue the difficult politics of caring for a planet that can (still) support a panoply of life.

Stephen Lezak is a researcher at the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford who studies the politics of climate change.
