The airline supports several local charities and has a corporate partnership with UNICEF which has raised over £14m for the most vulnerable children since it was established in 2012.

The airline takes sustainability seriously and is committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions flying by 2050. Together with its partners, including Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Cranfield Aerospace Solutions and Wright Electric, easyJet is working to accelerate the development of zero-emission aircraft technology. In the meantime, the airline is offsetting the carbon emissions from the fuel used for all its flights, at no additional cost to its customers, and only supports projects that are certified by Gold Standard or the Verified Carbon Standard, internationally recognised certification schemes. In addition, easyJet continues to renew its fleet, operate efficiently, and aims to fill most of its seats. Since 2000, over a 20-year period, the airline reduced its carbon emissions per passenger, per kilometre by over one-third, and aims to bring this down further.

Innovation is in easyJet’s DNA – since launching over 25 years ago, easyJet changed the way people fly to the present day where the airline leads the industry in digital, web, engineering and operational innovations to make travel more easy and affordable for its passengers.

The airline was named as Britain’s Most Admired Company of 2020 in the transport sector, retaining the leading position for a second year running. Britain's Most Admired Companies study is the longest-running annual survey of corporate reputation in the UK.

Easyjet launches its 2023 summer schedule.

easyJet has launched its summer 2023 schedule today, offering a quarter of a million flights across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

UK-based low-cost carrier easyJet (U2) has launched its summer 2023 schedule today, including over 100 destinations from the UK, for flights between May 9th and September 30th. Additionally, easyJet Holidays will offer thousands more packages than the previous summer. Let's look closely at how next summer could potentially be orange-hued for many Europeans.

A quarter of a million flights for summer 2023

For next summer, UK-based easyJet has big plans; the orange carrier has launched a bold summer schedule, offering 250,000 flights from the UK to the most-loved destinations in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Flights are on sale on easyjet.com or via the airline's app for as little as £29.99 (single, one-way ticket including taxes).

EasyJet has invested in the most sought-after countries for British holidaymakers, increasing its offer to Spain, Greece, Portugal, Turkey, Cyprus, and Egypt compared to summer 2022. EasyJet's UK Country Manager, Ali Gayward, commented on the new summer schedule by stating:

" With seats now available across hundreds of thousands of flights, serving 19 UK airports on over 400 routes to Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, now is a great time to book for next summer with easyJet"

The UK: easyJet's stronghold

Although easyJet operates a low-cost business model, some aspects of this airline differ from other textbook budget airlines.

Usually, low-cost carriers like Ryanair have several bases in several countries, where no airport acts like a hub. Unlike this concept, easyJet dominates the UK market, with London Gatwick (LGW) serving as the carrier's quasi-hub. Besides Gatwick, easyJet serves 18 other UK airports, from where the airline will offer 414 routes to 104 destinations next summer.

According to the Official Airline Guide (OAG), in 2022, easyJet will be the first carrier in terms of capacity, measured in seats, deployed from/to the UK, with a total of 46,847,908 seats. The orange planes compete head-to-head with the prime competitor of all time, the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair (FR). British Airways (BA), the UK's flag carrier, only places third, deploying 16% less capacity than easyJet.

Whose competition will face easyJet next summer

EasyJet focused its offer for next summer on all-time loved holiday destinations in the Mediterranean area. However, the orange carrier will not be the only one to follow this strategy. So, whose competition is U2 going to face in less than a year's time?

The UK-Spain market pair is one of the busiest in Europe; therefore, here is where easyJet will face the most brutal competition from other carriers. Notably, as the graph below shows, since 2019, this market pair has been dominated by Ryanair, while Jet2.com is the nearest competitor.

In the UK-Greece market pair, easyJet is much stronger than Ryanair, which does not feature in the top three carriers in terms of capacity; here, easyJet competes head-to-head with TUI Airways and Jet2.com. Portugal is a market that easyJet is probably trying to win back. Indeed, easyJet was the first carrier in the UK-Portugal market pair in 2019 but has lost the position to Ryanair since then.

Do you think the new summer schedule will elevate easyJet to become the leading carrier to the most sought-after holiday destinations in Europe? Let us know in the comment section below!

Turkish Airlines Cancels Flights To Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport Until March 2025

  • Turkish Airlines has extended the suspension of flights to Tel Aviv until March 2025.
  • Up to six airlines flew between Israel and Turkey last year, but flights were suspended in October.
  • Despite political conflicts, several airlines have resumed flights to Israel.

Turkish Airlines has reportedly canceled all flights to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) until March 2025. After suspending flights following the outbreak of the war, the Istanbul-based carrier was expected to return to Israel later this year, but the suspension has been extended by another five months.

Flights suspended for another year

Turkish Airlines initially suspended flights to Israel on October 10, citing the unstable situation in the country. It noted that flights would be halted "until further notice" but later announced that it would return in October 2024. However, Globes found that all flights between Istanbul and Tel Aviv, previously available for booking, have been canceled until March 2025. Turkish Airlines had not been available for comment at the time of publishing.

There are currently no airlines operating direct flights from Tel Aviv to Istanbul. Given Turkish Airlines' extensive international network, its absence from the market, combined with the airlines that stopped flying between the two countries, has impacted air travel from Tel Aviv. Istanbul had been an essential connecting point for passengers traveling from Israel to various destinations worldwide.

Flights between Israel and Turkey

Last year, flights between Israel and Turkey had significantly increased as the two countries strengthened diplomatic ties. In February 2023, Israeli airlines resumed flights to Turkey after a 16-year hiatus, with all three major carriers operating scheduled services. Israir operated the first flight on February 23, connecting Tel Aviv to Istanbul with an Airbus A320. Arkia followed shortly after, and then El Al in March 2023.

This was expected to boost tourism between the two countries, with Israel's Foreign Minister estimating that approximately 1 million Israelis would visit Turkey by the end of the year, representing a 25% increase from 2022. However, the positive developments were halted when the conflict started in October. At the time, the following airlines were operating flights between Israel and Turkey:

  • Pegasus Airlines
  • Turkish Airlines

According to data from Cirium , an aviation analytics company, September 2023 (the last full month before the conflict) saw an average of 172 weekly flights , with some days having as many as 12 services each way. As expected, Istanbul (IST)-Tel Aviv was the busiest route, with up to 70 weekly flights . This was followed by Istanbul (SAW)-Tel Aviv with 45 weekly , and Antalya-Tel Aviv with 43 weekly flights . Other routes connected the Israeli city to Izmir, Bodrum, Dalaman, and Trabzon.

Well Connected: The 5 Best Airlines For International Travel

Turkish Airlines had by far the most flights from Turkey to Israel, with 96 weekly operations . The carrier currently flies to over 293 international destinations in more than 130 countries, making it the leading carrier for international connections. Last month, it launched flights to Australia and also returned to Libya after nearly ten years.

Airlines returning to Israel

As seen in Israel and other territories, political conflict and war can have severe impacts on air travel and a country's connectivity with the rest of the world. Last year, several other airlines immediately suspended flights to Israel, citing security concerns. Similarly, El Al discontinued some of its international routes, including Johannesburg , which had been served since the 1950s.

However, several airlines have returned to Israel, providing essential connections to Tel Aviv. This includes Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines , SWISS, Air India, and easyJet. The US "big three" also announced their return to Israel , with United resuming flights last month. Delta will return in June 2024, while American Airlines returns later in October.

BA, easyJet and Wizz Air resume flights to and from Israel

Virgin Atlantic to restart services in September, almost a year after airlines suspended flights owing to Gaza war

Major European airlines have started to resume flights to and from Israel. Wizz Air, easyJet and British Airways are now all flying to Tel Aviv, and Virgin Atlantic is planning a resumption this year.

Wizz Air said on Wednesday it had restarted flights to Israel from six airports in March, and planned to resume operations on further routes during the next three months. This will include the resumption of flights from Gatwick to Tel Aviv, as well as 16 other paused routes.

Most big airlines suspended services to Israel and some surrounding areas after the start of the war in Gaza in October. They are only now returning.

BA resumed flights to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport on Monday, but with a reduced service of one daily plane four days a week. EasyJet restarted its services to Israel on 25 March, returning to its prewar schedule from London Luton, Amsterdam, Berlin, Basel, Geneva and Milan.

In January, easyJet revealed that the Middle East crisis had cost it more than £40m in lost trading as flights were suspended and demand weakened.

Ryanair has also been significantly affected by the war, and revealed on Wednesday that it had been forced to cancel 950 flights since October. The airline resumed flights to Ben Gurion at the start of February but suspended them again at the end of the month after a dispute over which terminal it could use.

Ryanair complained that the airport had closed its low-cost terminal 1, which meant the airline was being forced to use terminal 3, where the fees are higher.

Virgin Atlantic has said it plans to resume flights to Israel in September after initially earmarking March for a restart. The airline said: “After careful consideration, we have taken the difficult decision to extend our pause on flying to and from Tel Aviv up to and including 4 September 2024.

“We sincerely apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused and our teams will be in contact with anyone affected to discuss their options, which include rebooking to a later date or a full refund.”

after newsletter promotion

Virgin Atlantic posted annual accounts on Wednesday that showed a loss of £139m for the year to 31 December, an improvement on the £206m loss it made in 2022. It said continued cost discipline and cash protection meant that it expected to return to profitability next year.

Oliver Byers, Virgin Atlantic’s chief financial officer, said the continued losses were largely due to interest charges incurred on loans taken on during the pandemic, as well as £100m of debt repaid to lenders in 2023.
