The calculations are made in accordance with the respective religious calendars.

Islam is rooted in Indian Soil since the Mughal Era. The festivities around the holy month of Ramzan and both the events of Eid are equally celebratory as in an Islamic nation. Such is the diversity of India that only Muslims celebrate Eid. Still, people of other religions also participate in the celebrations, just as Muslims actively take part in the events pertaining to the festivities of Indian Religions. The British Colonial Era that India faced for decades paved a way for Christianity. Christmas found its way into the Indian Crowd and it is very enthusiastically commemorated with all its glory by people of all regions and religions.

Regional and Faith festivals such as Pongal, Onam, Bihu, Chhatth Puja, Rakshabandhan, and much more are celebrated by communities irrespective of religious inclinations. They depend on the general faith attached to the festivity or the regional celebratory moment such as those pertaining to Agriculture. India is diverse in its celebrations. With every changing region, language, and community, there is a difference in the celebration of festivals as well. “Festivals of India” outshine all the cultural and social perspectives around the world as they are very profoundly concerned with eventfulness and ecstasy.

Michael Douglas gets lifetime achievement award at International Film Festival of India in Goa

Veteran Hollywood actor and producer Michael Douglas was honored with the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award at the 54th International Film Festival of India as it came to a close on Tuesday.

The two-time Academy Award winner, 79, said he was “humbled” and with everything going on the world, the festival was “a reminder of the magic of moviemaking.”

“Cinema is one of the few mediums that has the power to unite and transform us. It transcends divisions, whether that be geography, race language and even time,” he said in his acceptance speech.

“Today our global language of cinema is more meaningful than ever,” Douglas added.

“Endless Borders,” an Iranian film directed by Abbas Amini, won the Golden Peacock for best film at the festival held annually in coastal Goa, India’s scenic tourist hotspot.

“The film is about how complicated physical borders might be yet nothing can be more complicated than the emotional and moral borders that you impose upon yourself,” the jury said in its citation.

The film is about an exiled Iranian teacher in a poor village on the border of Afghanistan and Iran who becomes acquainted with a family fleeing Afghanistan under threat from the Taliban.

“In the context of what’s happening in the world right now, with the amazing conflicts that are going on, with the wars at our borders, it is very important to tell our stories,” said Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, the chair of the international jury who’s directed movies including “Elizabeth” and the recent “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” “If we tell our stories to people and people listen to each other’s stories across borders, across everywhere, we understand each other.”

The other members of the international jury were Spanish cinematographer José Luis Alcaine, French producers Jérôme Paillard and Catherine Dussart and Australian producer Helen Leake.

As one of the oldest and most prolific film industries in the world, releasing about 1,500 movies annually, Indian films enjoy a large domestic market.

Films in regional Indian languages, most of them rooted in local culture, have also begun to find a foothold on the global stage. Earlier this year, India celebrated two Academy Awards — the high-energy best original song “Naatu Naatu” from the blockbuster Telugu-language action epic “RRR” and best short documentary “The Elephant Whisperers,” which streamed on Netflix.

The Indian government, which organizes the festival, has announced a new incentive plan for foreign film productions to boost global collaborations.

Douglas said Indian films were reaching a global audience thanks to the digital revolution and streaming services.

“Whatever country you are in, good moviemaking is usually about something personal to your country, and then realizing that it has an international message. Everything is in the material and you have to make it for yourself,” he said during a session earlier Tuesday.

The Bihar government's recent announcement of the school holiday calendar for 2024 has stirred controversy, igniting a fierce debate over the exclusion of holidays for several Hindu festivals. The decision, issued by the Education Department, has triggered uproar and drawn widespread criticism, with accusations of religious bias and favoritism being hurled across political spheres.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has condemned the school calendar, asserting claims of a stark disparity in treatment between Hindu and Muslim festivals. The saffron party has accused the calendar of displaying a bias against Hindu festivities while seemingly favoring those of the Muslim community.

Union Minister Ashwini Choubey raised objections to the calendar, citing the cancellation of holidays for Hindu festivals in stark contrast to the extended holidays marked for Eid. Expressing his disapproval on social media, the Union Minister highlighted, "Once again, the anti-Hindu stance of the uncle-nephew government has surfaced. Muslim festival holidays are being prolonged in schools while Hindu festival holidays are being revoked."

Adding fuel to the fire, Dr. Ajay Alok, the BJP's national spokesperson, went a step further, suggesting that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar should declare Bihar as an 'Islamic state', emphasizing the perceived favoritism toward one community over the other.

The revised holiday calendar for 2024 explicitly excludes significant Hindu festivals such as Maha Shivratri, Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, and Teej, among others. This decision marks a notable departure from the previous year's calendar, which allocated two days for Teej and one day for Jeetiya at Bihar government schools.

NEW DELHI (AP) — A stampede during a music festival at a university in southern India on Saturday killed at least four students and injured 60 others, according to news agency Press Trust of India.

The disaster happened at the Cochin University of Science and Technology in Kerala state where students were enjoying a live musical event that was interrupted by rain, leading the audience to scamper for shelter that resulted in a stampede.

At least two people among the injured are in critical condition, news website Indian Express reported.

Pinarayi Vijayan, the top elected official in Kerala, said he had ordered an investigation.

Bihar government's latest holiday calendar for government schools in the state ahead of 2024 has sparked a political uproar. Following the release, the Education Department is drawing severe flak over the alleged cancellation of holidays for several Hindu festivals.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has questioned the school calendar, alleging religious bias and hinting at appeasement of the Muslim community.
