Entrepreneurship: Elon Musk as a Role Model

Introduction, reflective summary, model entrepreneur, entrepreneurial profile, reference list.

Gaining entrepreneurial skills is an important component of a successful self-development practice aimed at training individual attainments in assessing current market conditions and introducing adequate methods of competition. During my study of current theoretical concepts in this industry, I have identified a number of meaningful frameworks that have shaped my vision of the ideal entrepreneur and provided a comprehensive picture of practical approaches.

I have managed to identify my strengths and weaknesses and understand which type of entrepreneurial activity suits me best. Initially, it was hard for me to navigate the rich terminology, but later, I expanded my knowledge and acquired valuable analytical skills. At this point, I have formed a vision of what entrepreneurship is and what features it has, and in the future, I intend to follow effective strategies to realize my potential to the full extent.

The field of entrepreneurship is an individual sphere with unique approaches and a wide range of concepts and practices that define and explain related trends. In particular, the formed entrepreneurial mindset, developed from the theory of entrepreneurship, is a collection of ideas and actions to mobilize in the right situations (De Winnaar & Scholtz 2019). The entrepreneurial decision-making process plays a particular role in this scheme. According to De Winnaar and Scholtz (2019), this process forms characteristic approaches to the analysis of different operating environments and is based on the implementation of a set of interventions at internal and external levels.

Thus, I can assume that entrepreneurship is a system based on responding to various fluctuations in a specific area. Effective adaptation to any business environment reflects the success of entrepreneurial practices. Failure to introduce productive approaches and action plans at different phases, conversely, highlights weaknesses and explains the need to adjust the current decision-making process.

The success of entrepreneurship, as a universal concept, is built on the capacities that stakeholders have. For instance, if I have sufficient knowledge and skills to reorganize the current workflow in favor of the potential growth of my business, I will implement the available capacities effectively. However, entrepreneurship implies not only using but also training (Rodríguez-López & Souto 2020). It is impossible to build a successful business without having experience, which is known to be gained through mistakes and gaps. Entrepreneurship, in this case, is a set of practical models and approaches that, being studied earlier, make it possible to allocate available resources as efficiently as possible and create a sustainable operating mechanism. Choosing appropriate practices is a trait of a successful entrepreneur, and I strive to develop the necessary skills and self-educate to replenish my professional background regularly.

I aspire to be an entrepreneur who successfully operates with both traditional theoretical concepts and modern approaches based on innovations and the latest advancements. For this purpose, I can use a wide range of digital platforms and applications that have gained popularity in the Internet age and become tools to speed up the decision-making process (Wu, Chen & Pan, 2019). In addition, I want to use not only professional but also interpersonal communication skills successfully.

Wu, Chen, and Pan (2019) mention a wide range of opportunities to interact with entrepreneurs globally to share experiences and learn from advanced practical solutions. I believe that for a successful entrepreneur, it is critical to possess developed communication skills to earn the trust of interested parties and use the maximum opportunities to promote a particular business. Therefore, I intend to work in these directions and expand my interaction attainments because, at the moment, I feel that this aspect is not my strength.

To reach what I aspire to, I need to pay attention to specific attributes and characteristics that a successful modern entrepreneur should possess. In academic literature, different properties and skills are listed. For instance, among crucial personality attributes, some researchers mention “risk-taking propensity, innovativeness, the locus of control, need for achievement, general self-efficacy and tolerance of ambiguity to assess the levels of entrepreneurial characteristics” (Anwar & Saleem 2019, p. 284). When analyzing these features, I would highlight innovativeness and the need for achievement as the integral components of success. The wider the range of methods and approaches the entrepreneur uses and the more diverse the algorithms for achieving goals, the higher the likelihood of accomplishing the set aims productively. Therefore, in addition to communication skills, I intend to emphasize innovativeness and the need for achievement.

From a wide range of outstanding entrepreneurs, I would like to draw particular attention to Elon Musk, the owner of the SpaceX corporation and a business genius. During his long career, this man has proven that a bold vision and a reluctance to put up with traditional approaches can pay off and bring significant dividends (Yauney 2018). By focusing on innovation, Elon Musk has not only made a multi-billion-dollar fortune. His greatest achievement is the transformation of the business sector because he has proved that the boldest ideas can become a reality if the efforts and resources are put in to make them happen.

Elon Musk has not always been a world-famous entrepreneur, which makes his personality even more outstanding. At the beginning of his career, he earned little and was content with temporary employment (Yauney 2018). Nevertheless, having experienced setbacks and failures, Musk did not give up and continued moving towards his dreams. By today, he has built one of the most successful corporations, and his practical experience has become a valuable resource for him. Many criticize Musk by claiming that his CEO skills are largely complemented by a team of highly qualified employees working on his business (Yauney 2018).

However, even with this fact in mind, one cannot belittle the merits of this entrepreneur, who took the liberty of moving towards his goals, which ultimately made him one of the world’s top business leaders. Therefore, I evaluate the example of Elon Musk as a person who, using the ideas of innovativeness and need for achievement, has achieved his high status deservedly.

In general, the discussion in the course has changed my perspective of what entrepreneurship is and who an entrepreneur is. After studying various theoretical aspects and compared them with my experience, I have realized that an entrepreneur is a person who constantly develops and never stops at what has been achieved. Entrepreneurship, in turn, has opened up to me as a flexible and dynamic field in which progress is a natural component of success, and any stagnation is tantamount to failure. Constant movement is the basis of a successful business, and I have realized that any result, even negative, is a consequence of work. Therefore, I have become more focused on future goals and identified the area in which I would like to enhance my knowledge.

While discussing my personal entrepreneurial profile, I have highlighted several key topics that may reflect my inclinations and interests. I have classified strengths, weaknesses, interests, and development opportunities into these categories demonstrated in Table 1. According to Esqueda, Csoban, and Prat (2018), many entrepreneurs have similar features, but only individual qualities inherent in them distinguish them from one another and reflect success or, conversely, failure. A comprehensive assessment of these components can help build my future career and identify the best paths for professional development. Moreover, given the aforementioned attributes and characteristics, I can create a step-by-step plan.

Table 1. Entrepreneurial Profile.

To summarize all of the above, I can say that the course has helped me shape my understanding of what entrepreneurship is, as well as the key theoretical and behavioral concepts that a successful entrepreneur should adhere to and gain. I see the combination of practical experience with accumulated knowledge as a background for productive professional development. Although I have not yet compiled my individual strategies and have some weaknesses, I am willing to follow my interests and use my strengths to the full extent. Emphasizing Elon Musk as my model entrepreneur, I intend to focus on innovativeness and the need for achievement as the critical elements of success.

Elon Musk’s Leadership Style and Accomplishments Essay

Introduction.

Elon Musk is an American business executive, innovator, and entrepreneur. His business acumen is exemplified by his massive successes that he has achieved, mainly as the CEO of Space X and Tesla Motors, as well as other businesses, including Neuralink, the Boring Company, and Open AI. As one of the co-founders of X.com, Musk played a key role in growing the company, both locally and globally. After years of operations, Musk and his partners sold the business, and created SpaceX. He was involved in the founding of SolarCity, which is currently referred to as Tesla Energy. He also co-founded OpenAI, a research company that deals with the development of artificial intelligence.

Why I Chose Elon Musk?

I chose Musk to analyze as a leader because he is a highly creative and innovative leader. Musk has developed technologies to make electric cars powerful, safe, and reliable. The mass production of different models has proven that electric cars can rival combustion engines and aid in alleviating climate change (Easto, 2017). His business acumen is admirable as he has weathered different storms. Musk focuses on the development of technologies that promote sustainability; environmental protection and the reduction of greenhouse emissions are some of his goals.

Leadership Style

Musk’s leadership style can be defined as transformational: its major goal is bringing change to individuals and systems. It comprises four main elements: individualized consideration, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation, and idealized influence (Easto, 2017). Musk keeps communication channels open and offers support and empathy. He solicits ideas from employees and encourages independent thinking. He is a role model for ethical business practices, sustainability, hard work,, and trust. The leadership style boosts performance as individual capabilities are maximized.

Musk’s Way of Leadership in All Career Stages

Throughout different stages of his career, Musk has maintained a single leadership style. He follows the unconventional path that challenges the status quo by thinking big and taking risks. He sets strategic stretch goals and works towards achieving them (Easto, 2017). For example, he has a goal of colonizing mars by blowing a nuclear rocket in order to make it habitable. Musk is a believer in providing feedback to employees so that they make processes more efficient. Throughout his career, Musk prioritizes communication; he encourages employees to adopt a direct and objective approach sharing information (Easto, 2017). This ensures that great ideas are not stifled and feedback is relayed in a timely manner. He is very flexible and adaptable, often changing his mind and the course of projects whenever new developments arise (Easto, 2017).

Musk’s Leadership Traits

Musk’s innovative nature is evident from his technologies that have disrupted the automotive industry, and rendered the development of rockets more effective. The Boring Company, OpenAI, and Neuralink are examples of his innovation and exploration of new technologies (Easto, 2017). He is also inspiring and makes employees excited about his plans and projects. Though rigorous and demanding, employees work hard because they believe in his vision. Musk is also a visionary leader who believes in pursuing goals regardless of the difficulty that might be involved in their attainment (Easto, 2017). His energy and enthusiasm inspire employees to share in his commitment and passion for innovation and change. As a fast-acting and action-oriented leader, Musk works on tough goals and tasks to completion.

Organizational Accomplishments

Elon Musk has had numerous successes throughout his business career. His first success was the development of a web software company known as Zip2 in 1995 Later, he cofounded X.com, which later became PayPal, and that was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion (Easto, 2017). He used his proceeds from the sale to start SpaceX in 2002. Two years later, he became Tesla’s chairman and product architect, and officially became its CEO in 2008 (Easto, 2017). He cofounded a solar energy services company known as SolarCity: the firm rebranded to Tesla Energy after its acquisition by Tesla Motors. In 2015, he was involved in the creation of an artificial intelligence research company known as OpenAI (Easto, 2017). A year later, he cofounded Neuralink, a company that focuses on the creation of brain-computer interfaces. He also founded the Boring Company, a firm that focuses mainly on the construction of tunnels.

Accomplishments in Society

The Hyperloop is Musk’s vision for a high-speed transportation mode that aims to improve transportation in America. Musk Foundation is a collaboration between Elon Musk and his brother. The private foundation supports four main areas of the economy: human space exploration research, renewable energy, science and engineering education, and pediatric research.

Awards and Honors

Musk has received several wards for his achievements: the 2007 Index Design award and the entrepreneur of the year for his contributions to the success of SpaceX and Tesla Motors (Easto, 2017). The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics awarded him the George Low award for the design of the Falcon 1 and the most outstanding contribution in the field in 2007/2008 (Easto, 2017). He also received the National Conservation Achievement award from the National Wildlife Federation for his work at SolarCity and Tesla. The National Space Society awarded him the Bon Braun Trophy for his exceptional achievements in space exploration (Easto, 2017). Other achievements include the Edison Achievement Award, the President’s award, and Businessperson of the year.

Vision for Twitter

In 2022, Musk purchased a 9.2% stake in the company, thus becoming its largest shareholder. He was elected to the board of the company and has proposed changes to the social media platform. For instance, he has suggested that an edit button should be introduced so that users can edit their messages even after posting. This proposal has elicited mixed reactions as users debate on whether it is necessary or not. His vision for Twitter involves promoting free speech and enhancing engagement on the platform. Musk has been hit with a class-action lawsuit for failing to disclose his investment in a timely manner. Investors who sold their shares might have suffered losses because they did not share in the price surge that happened after his late announcement.

Elon Musk is an American investor, innovator, and leader. His transformation leadership style has enabled him to attain great successes in different sectors of the economy. Musk has succeeded by setting stretch goals, inspiring employees, creating a compelling vision for his companies, innovating, and taking risks. He is an action-oriented leader who believes in inspiring employees to be and achieve their best. He has been awarded by several organizations for his exemplary leadership and achievements. He recently bought 9.2% stake in Twitter and intends to make it a better social media platform.

Elon Musk as a Role Model: Lessons to be Learned from a Transformational Innovator

Profile image of Alexander Franco

2018, Center for International Business and Educational Research

As a successful businessman and unique innovator, Elon Musk has already earned a place in the annals of contemporary business history. With a USD $28,000 loan from his father, Musk co-founded a web software company (Zip2) which was later acquired by Compaq. He took his proceeds from the sale to then create X.com which was subsequently purchased by PayPal. At this point, Musk could have purchased a small island and retired quite comfortably as a rich, young man. Instead, he invested his wealth into developing a series of businesses: SpaceX (2002), a space transport services company focused, in part, on establishing future human colonies on the moon and on Mars; Tesla Inc. (2003), a manufacturer of electric cars; SolarCity (2006), a solar energy services business; OpenAI (2015), a nonprofit created to promote safe artificial intelligence; Neuralink (2016), a company focused on creating brain-computer interfaces, and; The Boring Company (2016), a business that develops transportation infrastructure.

This presentation focuses on geometric art design with squares as geometric abstraction or cubism, while reviewing over triangular composition from a previous lesson, and circular images with a mathematical compass to create a "yin and yang" image. Instruction (April 20, 2022): Students learned about "Geometric Abstraction" or "Cubism" and why the square is significant in math and geometric art. The cube or square is a symbol for "mathematical perfection", with all sides equal, "simplicity/balance", a "perfect expression of 2-D space", an "aggressive statement of flatness", "pride in shape making", and an ancient "cosmically universal" symbol that is represented in all cultures. The "Black Square" is introduced, as well as a brief history. Students then apply these concepts to the 3 drawings that follow. The first image directly applies the concept of "geometric abstraction" and "cubism" to create a fish in water, with the square as its center. The second image pulls in concepts of "triangular composition" from earlier lessons, as well as quadrilaterals, to create a flying bird image. The final drawing is an extension from the previous lesson, finalizing the "yin and yang" colorful circular image using a mathematical compass, straight-edge ruler, white paper, and 2 colored markers of competing quality (blue and red). Students have the choice to choose their own 2 colors to create the final image. Music played in the background was Chinese bamboo flute music.

To achieve competitiveness in the today’s manufacturing plants; many researchers suggest agent based manufacturing systems, with scheduling and control activities distributed on several entities called agents. To develop this kind of systems some promising agent-oriented software methodologies, as Gaia, have been proposed. They provide the concepts and procedures to define the main features of multi-agent systems. In this paper we show how we used the Gaia methodology to analyze and design a multi-agent-based shop floor control system that has been further implemented by JADE. We also show preliminary computational experiments that show as our approach has a good performance in flexible environments.Key Words: shop floor control, scheduling and control, multi-agent systems, software engineering, Gaia analysis and design.Análisis y Diseño Gaia de un sistema multiagente de control de plantaResumen: Para mejorar el desempeño de las actuales plantas de producción, muchas investigaciones...

In 1995, both James Hillman and Charles Handy published books about leadership in which they used the imagery of archetypes or “gods” to describe types of leadership. Handy, for example, wrote about Zeus, Apollo, Athena, and Dionysus. Since then, other authors with an interest in leadership have turned to the language of archetypes, including Carol Pearson, whose books avoid naming the archetypes as gods, but instead use more generic personifications, such as the Warrior, the Sage, and the Magician (e.g. Pearson, 2001). Recently, Mark Chater (2005), Neil Remington Abramson (2007), and Karen Morley (2008) – to name a few – have found ways to use this language of mythology, archetypes, and the gods to talk about leadership.

This present study applies qualitative research method to evaluate the entrepreneurial roles and leadership styles of Elon Musk in Tesla motors. The study places its focus on the general review of Elon Musk’s leadership and attempts to match the leadership traits with some traditional leadership approaches widely recognized in leadership theory. The study employs a structured observation technique assimilating numerous secondary sources with a view to analyzing Musk’s leadership traits in Tesla motor. The results unfold Musk’s leadership attributes and shows that they match more or less with all the traditional leadership approaches but the servant leadership approach. Additionally, the outcomes also demonstrate a new character (entrepreneurial leader) in Musk’s leadership. Finally, the study offers some recommends for Elon Musk to follow, such as the champion/corporate intrapreneur and the servant leadership approaches so that they add practical values in his leading trait. This study will be a guideline for the new entrepreneur and will provide some distinctive ways of improvement in existing entrepreneurship as well as for management literature.

He moved to California in 1995 to attend Stanford University but decided instead to pursue a business career, co-founding web software company Zip2 with his brother Kimbal. The start-up was acquired by Compaq for $307 million in 1999. 1.1 Purpose and objective of the report

The purpose of this report is to fulfill the individual assignment of Fundamentals of Management that requires us to explain the definition of manager, definition of managerial roles by Henry Mintzberg, introduction to the company and manager that we chose and how the manager has fulfilled the managerial roles proposed by Henry Mintzberg. 1.2 Introduction to the company

Tesla is an American multinational corporation that produces or specializes in electric vehicles, energy storage and solar panel manufacturing based in Palo Alto, California (Tesla Inc, n.d). Tesla was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, both who are engineers that wanted to prove driving electric vehicles can be better than driving gasoline cars. Tesla also produced a unique set of energy solutions, such as Powerwall, Powerpack and Solar Roof that allows homeowners or businesses to manage renewable energy generation, storage and consumption. Tesla main manufacturing facility is at Tesla Factory in Fremont California (Tesla, n.d).

Elon Musk is an American entrepreneur who co-founded Tesla Motors in 2003 and becomes its CEO and product architect. Before he is a CEO of Tesla, he also founded X.com in 1999 and SpaceX in 2002. Musk become a multimillionaire in his late 20s when he sold his start-up company (Elon Musk Biography, n.d). Elon Musk is also a founder of OpenAI and The Boring Company. Musk stated that his goals are to change the world and humanity by reducing global warming through sustainable energy production and reducing the human extinction by establishing a human colony on Mars (Elon Musk, n.d). Elon Musk has succeeded in building an all-electric car in this era. Proven in 2008 when the company launched its Model S sedan by raising $226 million and was honored as the 2013 Car of the Year by Motor Trend magazine. In over 10 years, Musk keep launching his ideas by producing different types of electric car and energy solution product (Elon Musk Biography, n.d).

2.1 Definition of manager

Manager is someone who oversee and coordinates the work of others people in one organization in order for the organization can accomplish their goal. In every organization, there must be a manager so that the goals of the organization can be accomplished. Managers can be classified into three levels.

1. First-line manager: Manager who coordinates directly the work of non-managerial employee.

2. Middle manager: Manager who coordinates and oversee the work of first-line manager. The middle manager also controls the flow of information between top manager and first-line manager.

3. Top manager: Manager who in charge of making decisions that will affect the whole organization and making plans and goals for the organization in the future.

2.2 Definition of Henry Mintzberg’s managerial roles

Henry Mintzberg is a Canadian management expert that introduced the managerial roles in a practical way for us to learn. There are three managerial roles that he introduced.

1. Interpersonal roles: Interpersonal roles is a role that requires a manager to deal with other people or to communicate with other people. The role can be behalf of the company or within the company. The example of this roles is:

 Figurehead: A head of a department that is an exemplary role model. Usually he is the one who attends business dinners, receptions and celebrating anniversaries.

 Leader: As a leader, they motivate the staff so that the working environment can be positive.

 Liason: A liason is someone who negotiate with other people on the behalf of the company.

2. Informational roles: This managerial role control how the information flows in an organization. The manager knows how the information is being collected and also decided what information should be kept or shared internally or externally. The examples are:

 Monitor: As a monitor the manager collect all information whether internally or externally about the organization. The manager also in charge of arranging, analyzing and assessing the information so that he can easily identify problems and identify changes.

 Disseminator: As a disseminator, a manager transfers the information he has to the employee within the company.

 Spokesman: As a spokesman, a manager represents the company and he communicates to the outside world.

3. Decisional roles: This role expect the managers to make decisions that affect the whole organization. The managers also analyze the decisions that he make for the organization. The examples are:

 Entrepreneur: As an entrepreneur, the manager design what choices he wants to make and make strategies. As well as be responsible in any changes he makes.

 Disturbance handler: As a disturbance handler, the manager is expected to handle the problems or operational breakdown in the organization. He is expected to has the solution for the problem.

 Resource allocator: As a resource allocator, the manager is expected to handle how does he spend his resources for the organization benefit.

 Negotiator: As a negotiator, the manager participates in negotiation with the other company and also represents the interests of the company. For example, it can be negotiation of the employee salary.

2.3 Manager Accomplishment

Interpersonal roles

Elon Musk is a CEO of a big company, Tesla. Interpersonal roles require manager to communicate with other people and Elon Musk shows that he fulfill this role. Firstly, Musk plans to increase their producing from 2,000 to 6,000 vehicles per week and from this Musk send an extraordinary email to his employees to motivates them. He praises and commend his employee by thanking them when they’ve achieved the goals he set up for. In the email, Musk concludes an encouragement, thanking the people at Tesla for accomplishing miracles every day (Bariso 2018). In one interview, Musk stated that as a leader he wants to motivate and inspire his team by reducing the noise in the work and help remove blockers. He inspires his employees by motivating them to succeed and making them feel like they are the part of larger team and that they are needed (Umoh 2017).

Secondly, Musk represents the company to negotiate to the outside world. Negotiating means getting the best of your opponent. In 2014, Tesla announced plans to build its first massive battery plant. But Tesla did not build its factory down the road from Palo Alto headquarters. They took the show on the road asking for $500 million on cash but the result a bidding war among several states and Nevada coughing up $1.3 billion in transferrable tax credits and various other tax abatements over 20 years to win the largest incentives package in Nevada’s history. Musk has proved so adept landing incentives that states now compete to give him money (Claiborne 2017).

Informational roles

In this role, Elon Musk imply something that he believes is beneficial for the company. Musk encourage their employee to ditch the traditional way of communication in most companies uses, which messages always flow through managers because he thinks it fails to serve the company. He stated that anyone in Tesla should email or talk directly to the person they think is the fastest way to solve a problem for the benefit of the whole company. Musk believe that poor communication can set everyone back and fails to serve the company (Kane 2017).

Furthermore, as a manager Musk took the role to become a spokesman and delivers information to the outside world about launching their Tesla Model 3 car. Musk using the social media, Twitter to announced some specifications and price for the newly awaited car he’s going to launch the Tesla Model 3 (Cole 2018).

Decisional roles

Elon musk has been making decisions ever since he become the CEO of Tesla, which is 10 years ago. In the latest news, it is revealed that Tesla has failed missing the company production goals pretty consistently. The company made just 2,000 Model 3s in the first headquarter missing its goal of 2,500 units. Musk taking a route by aiming high by adjusting their internal target to 6,000 even though their official goal is 5,000 units. This way the company will be able to meet its official goal even if it cannot meet its ambitious one.

Musk command an accountability by not letting anyone off the hook for hitting the target without any relevance excuses. Moreover, Musk tells the employee to not use acronym or nonsense words for the company software, processes and systems because he doesn’t want people at Tesla to memorize glossary when using Tesla (Ryan 2018).

CHAPTER III

In conclusion, there are three different types of manager. First is first-line manager or we can call it as supervisor because their task is to oversee and coordinates directly the work of the nonmanagerial employees. Second is the middle manager, they are the one who become the bridge of communication between the top manager and the first line manager and they also coordinate and oversee the work of the first line manager. Third is the top manager, they are the one who makes decisions that will affect the whole organization and they are responsible for the problems in an organization.

There are three types of managerial roles for a manager in an organization to fulfill. First, interpersonal role is a role that requires communication with other people. From what I’ve explained above, Elon Musk has fulfilled the interpersonal role by motivating his employee in his company and always thanking his employees. He represents the company, Tesla to negotiate in the outside world too. Second, informational role is a role that control the flows of information in an organization. As a CEO of a big company, Musk represents the company by announcing their plans for their new product to the outside world in Twitter. He also controls the flow of information by asking their employee to not practicing the ‘command of chain’ but to directly tell information to someone in the company they think can help with the problem. Third, decisional role is a role for a manager to make decisions that can affect the whole organization. Musk has fulfilled this role making a decision to increase their goal production in the company to be more productive.

Lastly, there are some roles that a manager in an organization has to do. As a CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk has proven to fulfill the managerial roles that are required for a manager to do.

From what I can conclude, Musk has done a great job being the CEO of Tesla.

New Elon Musk essay: Tesla CEO’s current thoughts on technology and humanity

' src=

It’s been a while since Elon Musk published an extensive blog post outlining his stance on a specific topic. On the official Tesla website, his last blog post was on August 24, 2018, when he explained his decision to keep Tesla a publicly-traded company. Fortunately, a new Elon Musk essay has been posted in China, outlining the Tesla CEO’s thoughts on a number of topics — from sustainability, the Tesla Bot’s real-world use, Neuralink’s focus on the disabled, and SpaceX’s exploration aspirations .

The new Elon Musk essay was published in  China Cyberspace , the Cyberspace Administration of China’s (CAC) flagship magazine. A translation of the essay was posted by Yang Liu, a journalist from the state-owned news agency  Xinhua , on the  Beijing Channel blog. As could be seen in Liu’s post, Musk actually discussed a number of topics in detail.

In a way, the publication of the new Elon Musk essay in the CAC’s flagship magazine is significant. As noted by  The Register , Musk’s essay suggests that Chinese authorities approve of the Tesla CEO’s positions on the topics he discussed . Only a few other foreign entrepreneurs would likely be given the same honor.

Following is the full text of Elon Musk’s new essay.

Believing in Technology for a Better Future

Thank you for the invitation from China Cyberspace magazine. I am pleased to share with my Chinese friends some of my thoughts on the vision of technology and humanity.

Posted by Elon Musk

As technology accelerates, it may one day surpass human understanding and control. Some are optimistic and some are pessimistic. But I believe that as long as we are not complacent and always maintain a sense of urgency, the future of humanity will be bright, driven by the power of technology. It is like a self-fulfilling prophecy: if humans want to make the future good, they should take action to make it good.

I want to do everything we can to maximize the use of technology to help achieve a better future for humanity. To that end, any area that contributes to a sustainable future is worthy of our investment. Whether it’s Tesla, Neuralink, or SpaceX, these companies were all founded with the ultimate goal of enhancing the future of human life and creating as much practical value for the world as possible—Tesla to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy, Neuralink for medical rehabilitation, SpaceX for making interstellar connections possible.

Clean Energy: The Future of Sustainability

The starting point for my thinking about clean energy is how to create and store energy sustainably and for the long term, and how to provide a constant source of power for the future of productive life. In my view, the future of sustainable energy involves three components.

The generation of sustainable energy. The sun is like a giant fusion generator, from which mankind currently exploits a tiny amount of energy. In the long run, solar energy will become the main source of energy for human civilization. Of course, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and nuclear power are also useful energy supplements.

The storage of sustainable energy. Given the change of day and night and the change of weather, we need a lot of fixed battery banks to store solar and wind energy, because the sun does not shine all the time, and the wind does not blow all the time, energy needs to be stored in a large number of fixed battery banks.

Electrified transportation. Full electrification of transportation, including cars, planes, and ships. Electric rockets may be more difficult, but we may be able to manufacture the propellant used in rockets from sustainable energy sources. Eventually, the world economy will be run entirely by sustainable energy sources.

The world is on track for a sustainable energy transition, and humanity should continue to accelerate the process. The faster this transition is achieved, the less risk humanity poses to the environment and the more it will gain. When clean energy is available, carbon sequestration and desalination will be cheaper, climate change and water shortages will be solved, and when fossil fuels are out of the picture, the skies will be cleaner, the world will be quieter, the air will be fresher, and the future will be brighter.

Solar power, battery packs, and electric vehicles paint a rosy picture. Next, we need to focus on the limiting factors. The electrification of cars has become a consensus among nations, but battery support on a terawatt-hour scale is needed to roll out pure electric vehicles around the globe. According to our estimates, the world needs about 300 TWh of battery storage to achieve a transition to sustainable energy. The biggest difficulty in advancing sustainable energy lies in the large-scale production of lithium battery cells. Specifically, from the mining and element refining to battery cells coming off of the production line and finally assembled into battery packs, this is a complex process that is restraining the rapid development of a sustainable energy economy.

As a pioneer and innovator focusing on energy innovation technology, Tesla was founded to solve the problem of energy innovation. On the one hand, we create integrated sustainable energy products from the three segments of energy production, storage and use; on the other hand, we are committed to redefining battery manufacturing by innovating and developing advanced battery technology to remove restrictions on battery capacity. I believe that the world will transition to a sustainable future through a combination of solar and wind energy plus battery storage and electric vehicles. I am pleased to see more and more companies joining this field. Chinese companies will be a force to be reckoned with in the cause of energy innovation.

Humanoid Robots: Doing What Humans Do

Today’s cars are increasingly like smart, web-connected robots on wheels. In fact, in addition to cars, humanoid robots are also becoming a reality, with Tesla launching a general-purpose humanoid robot (Tesla Bot) in 2021. The Tesla Bot is close to the height and weight of an adult, can carry or pick up heavy objects, walk fast in small steps, and the screen on its face is an interactive interface for communication with people. You may wonder why we designed this robot with legs. Because human society is based on the interaction of a bipedal humanoid with two arms and ten fingers. So if we want a robot to adapt to its environment and be able to do what humans do, it has to be roughly the same size, shape, and capabilities as a human.

Tesla Bots are initially positioned to replace people in repetitive, boring, and dangerous tasks. But the vision is for them to serve millions of households, such as cooking, mowing lawns, and caring for the elderly.

Achieving this goal requires that robots evolve to be smart enough and for us to have the ability to mass produce robots. Our “four-wheeled robots” – cars – have changed the way people travel and even live. One day when we solve the problem of self-driving cars (i.e., real-world artificial intelligence), we will be able to extend artificial intelligence technology to humanoid robots, which will have a much broader application than cars.

We plan to launch the first prototype of a humanoid robot this year and focus on improving the intelligence of that robot and solving the problem of large-scale production. Thereafter, humanoid robots’ usefulness will increase yearly as production scales up and costs fall. In the future, a home robot may be cheaper than a car. Perhaps in less than a decade, people will be able to buy a robot for their parents as a birthday gift.

It is foreseeable that with the power of robots, we will create an era of extreme abundance of goods and services, where everyone can live a life of abundance. Perhaps the only scarcity that will exist in the future is for us to create ourselves as humans.

Neuralink: Empowering the Disabled

Some of our Chinese friends may not be as familiar with Neuralink as with electric cars. These companies focus on developing computer-human brain fusion technologies, developing brain chips the size of coins, similar to wearable devices such as smartphones, except that they integrate more deeply with the user’s body—recording and stimulating brain activity through implants in the cerebral cortex.

At this stage, the technology is helping injured people on an individual level. We have received many saddening letters: a 25-year-old young man was in the prime of his life when he had a motorcycle accident that left him unable to eat on his own, which is a great grief for the individual and the family. In light of this, brain-machine interface technology will be focused on curing or alleviating brain injury and other related disorders in the years to come. For example, it could help restore sensory or motor function to limbs of those with spinal injuries and mental system disorders or allow quadriplegics to use their brains to easily operate computers or cell phones.

This technology can also improve a wider range of brain injury problems, whether these disorders are congenital or accidental, or caused by age and external stressors, including severe depression, morbid obesity, sleep problems, and underlying schizophrenia, all of which are expected to be alleviated by human-computer devices.

With the development of brain-machine interface technology, in the long term, this connection is expected to expand the channels of communication between the outside world and the human brain, “accessing” more brain regions and new neural data. This technology could allow humans to effectively integrate with artificial intelligence and ultimately expand new ways for humans to interact with the world, themselves and others. Even if the goal of human-machine integration is difficult to achieve, brain-machine interface technology could be of great value in the field of medical rehabilitation.

Space Exploration: The Possibility of Cross-Planet Habitats

Finally, my greatest hope is that humans create a self-sustaining city on Mars. Many people ask me why I want to explore outer space and turn humans into multi-planetary creatures. In the vast universe, human civilization is like a faint little candle, like a little shimmering light in the void. When the sun expands one day and the Earth is no longer habitable, we can fly to a new home in a spaceship. If humans can inhabit other planets, it means that they have passed one of the conditions of the great screening of the universe, then we will become interplanetary citizens, and human civilization will be able to continue.

The first step toward interplanetary habitat is to reduce the cost of travel, which is what SpaceX was founded to do – first by building recoverable rockets and then by building reusable mega-ships with ever-increasing carrying capacity. As of earlier this year, SpaceX had successfully reused 79 rockets to deliver cargo to the space station and send ordinary people into space. We have also designed and built the largest launch vehicle in history, the Starship, which can carry 100 passengers and supplies at a time. In the future, we plan to build at least 1,000 Starships to send groups of pioneers to Mars to build a self-sustaining city.

As technology continues to change lives at an accelerating pace and the world evolves, life is more than simply solving one problem after another. We all want to wake up in the morning full of anticipation for the future and rejoice in what is to come. I hope more people will join us in our fight to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. I also welcome more like-minded Chinese partners to join us in exploring clean energy, artificial intelligence, human-machine collaboration, and space exploration to create a future worth waiting for.

I can’t remember the word, but do you know the kind of fungi connection between trees in the forest? How do you call it?

Mycelium. We are just — I just somehow feel that we are connected by this kind of infinite web of mycelium. We are so bound together. And I don’t think we really realized that until all this happened.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

It’s quite hard to explain, to me in a sense, because some people would say, oh, I’m so hoping your father will come, and then everything will be OK. And it’s very hard to explain that really this group of people decided to bring us up together, shared all their resources over 75 years, grow into each other, fight endlessly with each other, love and hate each other but somehow stay together. And their children will then meet and marry and make grandchildren.

And there’s so many levels of connection. And I’m sitting here in the room, and I see their faces, some of them. And we are incredibly — it’s hard to explain how much these people are missing from our kind of forest ground. [CHUCKLES SOFTLY]

From “The New York Times,” I’m Sabrina Tavernise, and this is “The Daily.”

It’s been nearly six months since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 and took more than 200 people into Gaza. One of the hardest hit places was a village called Nir Oz, near the border with Gaza. One quarter of its residents were either killed or taken hostage.

Yocheved Lifshitz was one of those hostages and so was her husband, Oded Lifshitz. Yocheved was eventually released. Oded was not.

Today, the story of one family at the center of the war.

It’s Friday, March 29.

OK, here we go. OK.

Good morning, Yocheved. Good morning, Sharone.

Good morning.

Yocheved, could you identify yourself for me, please? Tell me your name, your age and where you’re from.

[SPEAKING HEBREW]

OK, I’ll translate. My name is Yocheved Lifshitz. I’m 85 years old. I was born in 1938. When I was 18, I arrived at kibbutz Nir Oz. I came alone with a group of people who decided to come and form and build a community on a very sandy territory, which was close to the Gaza Strip.

And my name is Sharone Lifschitz. I am 52 years old. I was raised in kibbutz Nir Oz by my mom and dad. So I lived there until I was 20. And I live for the last 30-something years in London.

And, Sharone, what do you have next to you?

Next to me I have a poster of my dad in both English and Hebrew. And it says, “Oded Lifshitz, 83.” And below that it says, “Bring him home now.” And it’s a photo where I always feel the love because he is looking at me. And there’s a lot of love in it in his eyes.

And why did you want to bring him here today, Sharone?

Because he should be talking himself. He should be here and able to tell his story. And instead, I’m doing it on his behalf. It should have been a story of my mom and dad sitting here and telling their story.

The story of Oded and Yocheved began before they ever met in Poland in the 1930s. Anti-Semitism was surging in Europe, and their families decided to flee to Palestine — Yocheved’s in 1933, the year Hitler came to power, and Oded’s a year later. Yocheved remembers a time near the end of the war, when her father received news from back home in Poland. He was deeply religious, a cantor in a synagogue. And he gathered his family around him to share what he’d learned.

And he said, we don’t have a family anymore. They’ve all been murdered. And he explained to us why there is no God. If there was a God, he would have protected my family. And this means that there is no God.

And suddenly, we stopped going to synagogue. We used to go every Saturday.

So it was a deep crisis for him. The shock and the trauma were very deep.

Abstention.

Abstention. Soviet Union? Yes. Yes. The United Kingdom? Abstained.

Yocheved’s father lived long enough to see a state establish for his children. The UN resolution of 1947 paved the way for a new country for Jews. And the next spring, Israel declared its independence. Yocheved remembers listening to the news on the radio with her parents.

The General Assembly of the United Nations has made its decision on Palestine.

We had a country. So now we’ll have somebody who’s protecting us. It’s a country for the people, to rebuild the people. This was the feeling we had.

In other words, if God could not protect you, this nation maybe could?

Yes. But the next day, it was already sad.

Israel was immediately forced to defend itself when its Arab neighbors attacked. Israel won that war. But its victory came at a great cost to the Palestinian Arabs living there. More than 700,000 either fled or were expelled from their homes. Many became refugees in Gaza in the south.

Suddenly, Yocheved and Oded saw themselves differently from their parents, not as minorities in someone else’s country, but as pioneers in a country of their own, ready to build it and defend it. They moved to the south, near the border line with Gaza. It was there, in a kibbutz, where they met for the first time.

The first time I met him, he was 16, and I was 17. And we didn’t really have this connection happening. But when we arrived at Nir Oz, that’s where some sort of a connection started to happen. And he was younger than I am by a year and a half. So at first I thought, he’s a kid. But for some reason, he insisted. Oded really insisted. And later, turned out he was right.

What was it about him that made you fall in love with him?

He was cute.

He was a cute kid. He was a cute boy.

What’s so funny?

He was a philosopher. He wrote a lot. He worked in agriculture. He was this cute boy. He was only 20, think about it.

And then I married him. And he brought two things with him. He brought a dog and he brought a cactus. And since then we’ve been growing a huge field of cacti for over 64 years.

What did it feel like to be starting a new life together in this new country? What was the feeling of that?

We were euphoric.

And what did you think you were building together?

We thought we were building a kibbutz. We were building a family. We were having babies. That was the vision. And we were thinking that we were building a socialist state, an equal state. And at first, it was a very isolated place. There were only two houses and shacks and a lot of sand. And little by little, we turned that place into a heaven.

Building the new state meant cultivating the land. Oded plowed the fields, planting potatoes and carrots, wheat and cotton. Yocheved was in charge of the turkeys and worked in the kitchen cooking meals for the kibbutz. They believed that the best way to live was communally. So they shared everything — money, food, even child-rearing.

After long days in the fields, Oded would venture outside the kibbutz to the boundary line with Gaza and drink beer with Brazilian peacekeepers from the UN and talk with Palestinians from the villages nearby. They talked about politics and life in Arabic, a language Oded spoke fluently. These were not just idle conversations. Oded knew that for Israel to succeed, it would have to figure out how to live side by side with its Arab neighbors.

He really did not believe in black and white, that somebody is the bad guy and somebody is the good guy, but there is a humanistic values that you can live in.

Sharone, what was your father like?

My father was a tall man and a skinny man. And he was —

he is — first of all, he is — he is a man who had very strong opinion and very well formed opinion. He read extensively. He thought deeply about matters. And he studied the piano. But as he said, was never that great or fast enough for classical. But he always played the piano.

[PIANO MUSIC]

He would play a lot of Israeli songs. He wound play Russian songs. He would play French chansons.

And he had this way of just moving from one song to the next, making it into a kind of pattern. And it was — it’s really the soundtrack of our life, my father playing the piano.

[PLAYING PIANO]:

[CONVERSATION IN HEBREW]:

[PLAYING PIANO]

So one side of him was the piano. Another side was he was a peace activist. He was not somebody who just had ideals about building bridges between nations. He was always on the left side of the political map, and he actioned it.

[NON-ENGLISH CHANTING]:

I remember growing up and going very regularly, almost weekly, to demonstrations. I will go regularly with my father on Saturday night to demonstrations in Tel Aviv. I will sit on his shoulders. He will be talking to all his activist friends. The smoke will rise from the cigarettes, and I will sit up there.

But somehow, we really grew up in that fight for peace.

Yocheved and Oded’s formal fight for peace began after the Arab-Israeli war of 1967. Israel had captured new territory, including the West Bank, the Sinai Peninsula, and the Gaza Strip. That brought more than a million Palestinians under Israeli occupation.

Oded immediately began to speak against it. Israel already had its land inside borders that much of the world had agreed to. In his view, taking more was wrong. It was no longer about Jewish survival. So when Israeli authorities began quietly pushing Bedouin Arabs off their land in the Sinai Peninsula, Oded took up the cause.

He helped file a case in the Israeli courts to try to stop it. And he and Yocheved worked together to draw attention to what was going on. Yocheved was a photographer, so she took pictures showing destroyed buildings and bulldozed land. Oded then put her photographs on cardboard and drove around the country showing them to people everywhere.

They became part of a growing peace movement that was becoming a force helping shape Israeli politics. Israel eventually returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt in 1982.

[NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]

Whenever there is a movement towards reconciliation with our neighbors, it’s almost like your ability to live here, your life force, gets stronger. And in a way, you can think of the art of their activism as being a response to that.

And why did he and your mother take up that fight, the cause of the land? Why do you think that was what he fought for?

My father, he had a very developed sense of justice. And he always felt that had we returned those lands at that point, we could have reached long-term agreement at that point. Then we would have been in a very different space now. I know that in 2019, for example, he wrote a column, where he said that when the Palestinians of Gaza have nothing to lose, we lose big time. He believed that the way of living in this part of the world is to share the place, to reach agreement, to work with the other side towards agreements.

He was not somebody who just had ideals about building bridges between nations. Two weeks before he was taken hostage, he still drove Palestinians that are ill to reach hospital in Israel and in East Jerusalem. That was something that meant a lot to him. I think he really believed in shared humanity and in doing what you can.

Do you remember the last conversation you had with your father?

I don’t have a clear memory which one it was. It’s funny. A lot of things I forgot since. A lot of things have gone so blurred.

We actually didn’t have a last conversation. The last thing he said was, Yoche, there is a war. And he was shot in the hand, and he was taken out. And I was taken out. I couldn’t say goodbye to him. And what was done to us was done.

We’ll be right back.

Yocheved, the last thing Oded said was there’s a war. Tell me about what happened that day from the beginning.

That morning, there was very heavy shelling on Nir Oz. We could hear gunfire. And we looked outside, and Oded told me, there are a lot of terrorists outside. We didn’t even have time to get dressed. I was still wearing my nightgown. He was wearing very few clothes. I remember him trying to close the door to the safe room, but it didn’t work. He wasn’t successful in closing it.

And then five terrorists walked in. They shot him through the safe room door. He was bleeding from his arm. He said to me, Yoche, I’m injured. And then he fainted. He was dragged out on the floor. And I didn’t know if he was alive. I thought he was dead. After that, I was taken in my nightgown. I was led outside. I was placed on a small moped, and I was taken to Gaza.

And we were driving over a bumpy terrain that had been plowed. And it didn’t break my ribs, but it was very painful.

And I could see that the gate that surrounds the Gaza Strip was broken, and we were driving right through it.

And as we were heading in, I could see so many people they were yelling, “Yitbach al Yahud,” kill the Jews, slaughter the Jews. And people were hitting me with sticks. And though the drivers on the moped tried to protect me, it didn’t help.

What were you thinking at the time? What was in your mind?

I was thinking, I’m being taken; I’m being kidnapped. I didn’t know where to, but this decision I had in my head was that I’m going to take photographs in my mind and capture everything I’m seeing so that when I — or if and when I am released, I’ll have what to tell.

And when I came to a stop, we were in a village that’s near Nir Oz. It’s called Khirbet Khuza. We came in on the moped, but I was transferred into a private car from there. And I was threatened that my hand would be cut off unless I hand over my watch and my ring. And I didn’t have a choice, so I took my watch off, and I took my ring off, and I handed it to them.

Was it your wedding ring?

Yes, it was my wedding ring.

After that, they led me to a big hangar where the entrance to the tunnel was, and I started walking. And the entrance was at ground level, but as you walk, you’re walking down a slope. And you’re walking and walking about 40 meters deep underground, and the walls are damp, and the soil is damp. And at first, I was alone. I didn’t know that other people had been taken too. But then more hostages came, and we were walking together through the tunnels.

Many of whom were from kibbutz Nir Oz. These were our people. They were abducted but still alive. And we spoke quietly, and we spoke very little. But as we were walking, everybody started telling a story of what had happened to him. And that created a very painful picture.

There were appalling stories about murder. People had left behind a partner.

A friend arrived, who, about an hour or two hours before, had her husband murdered and he died in her hands.

It was a collection of broken up people brought together.

So you were piecing together the story of your community and what had happened from these snapshots of tragedies that you were looking at all around you as you were walking. What’s the photograph you’ll remember most from that day?

It would be a girl, a four-year-old girl. People kept telling her — walk, walk, walk. And we tried to calm her down. And her mom tried to carry her on her arms. It was the most difficult sight to see a child inside those tunnels.

What were you feeling at that moment, Yocheved?

Very difficult.

Where did they lead you — you and your community — from Nir Oz.

They led us to this chamber, a room, that they had prepared in advance. There were mattresses there. And that’s where we were told to sit.

I saw people sitting on the mattresses, bent down, their heads down between their hands. They were broken. But we hardly spoke. Everybody was inside their own world with themselves, closed inside his own personal shock.

Yocheved was without her glasses, her hearing aids, or even her shoes. She said she spent most days lying down on one of the mattresses that had been put out for the hostages. Sometimes her captors would let her and others walk up and down the tunnels to stretch their legs.

She said she was given a cucumber, spreading cheese, and a piece of pita bread every day to eat. They had a little bit of coffee in the morning and water all day long.

One day, a Hamas leader came to the room where she and others were being held. She said she believes it was Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, who is believed to be the architect of the October 7 attack. Two other hostages who were held with Yocheved also identified the man as Sinwar, and an Israeli military spokesman said he found the accounts reliable.

He came accompanied with a group of other men. He just made rounds between the hostages, I suppose. And he spoke in Hebrew, and he told us not to worry, and soon there’s going to be a deal and we’ll be out. And others told me, don’t speak. And I said, what is there for me to be afraid of? The worst already happened. Worst thing, I’ll be killed.

I want to say something, and I spoke my mind. I told Sinwar, why have you done what you just did to all of the same people who have always helped you? He didn’t answer me. He just turned around and they walked off.

Were you afraid to ask him why Hamas did what it did, to challenge him?

I wasn’t afraid.

I was angry about the whole situation. It was against every thought and thinking we ever had. It was against our desire to reach peace, to be attentive and help our neighbors the way we always wanted to help our neighbors. I was very angry. But he ignored what I said, and he just turned his back and walked away.

In this entire time, you had no answers about Oded?

What was the hardest day for you, the hardest moment in captivity?

It’s when I got sick. I got sick with diarrhea and vomiting for about four days. And I had no idea how this will end. It was a few very rough days. And probably because of that, they decided to free me.

They didn’t tell me they were going to release me. They just told me and another girl, come follow us. They gave us galabiya gowns to wear and scarves to wear over our heads, so maybe they’ll think that we are Arab women. And only as we were walking, and we started going through corridors and ladders and climbing up we were told that we’re going home.

I was very happy to be going out. But my heart ached so hard for those who were staying behind. I was hoping that many others would follow me.

It’s OK. Let’s go. It’s OK. Let’s go.

You go with this one.

Shalom. Shalom.

There was a video that was made of the moment you left your captors. And it seemed to show that you were shaking a hand, saying shalom to them. Do you remember doing that?

I said goodbye to him. It was a friendly man. He was a medic. So when we said goodbye, I shook his hand for peace, shalom, to goodbye.

What did you mean when you said that?

I meant for peace.

Shalom in the sense of peace.

An extraordinary moment as a freed Israeli hostage shakes hands with a Hamas terrorist who held her captive.

I literally saw my mom on CNN on my phone on the way to the airport. And it was the day before I was talking to my aunt, and she said, I just want to go to Gaza and pull them out of the earth. I just want to pull them out of the earth and take them. And it really felt like that, that she came out of the earth. And when she shook the hand of the Hamas person, it just made me smile because it was so her to see the human in that person and to acknowledge him as a human being.

I arrived in the hospital at about 5:30 AM. My mom was asleep in the bed. And she was just — my mom sleeps really peacefully. She has a really quiet way of sleeping. And I just sat there, and it was just like a miracle to have her back with us. It was just incredible because not only was she back, but it was her.

I don’t know how to explain it. But while they were away, we knew so little. We were pretty sure she didn’t survive it. The whole house burned down totally. So other homes we could see if there was blood on the walls or blood on the floor. But in my parents’ home, everything was gone — everything. And we just didn’t know anything. And out of that nothingness, came my mom back.

It was only when she got to the hospital that Yocheved learned the full story of what happened on October 7. Nir Oz had been mostly destroyed. Many of her friends had been murdered. No one knew what had happened to Oded. Yocheved believed he was dead. But there wasn’t time to grieve.

The photograph she had taken in her mind needed to be shared. Yocheved knew who was still alive in the tunnels. So she and her son called as many families as they could — the family of the kibbutz’s history teacher, of one of its nurses, of the person who ran its art gallery — to tell them that they were still alive, captive in Gaza.

And then in November came a hostage release. More than 100 people came out. The family was certain that Oded was gone. But Sharone decided to make some calls anyway. She spoke to one former neighbor then another. And finally, almost by chance, she found someone who’d seen her father. They shared a room together in Gaza before he’d gotten ill and was taken away. Sharone and her brothers went to where Yocheved was staying to tell her the news.

She just couldn’t believe it, actually. It was as if, in this great telenovela of our life, at one season, he was left unconscious on the floor. And the second season open, and he is in a little room in Gaza with another woman that we know. She couldn’t believe it.

She was very, very, very excited, also really worried. My father was a very active and strong man. And if it happened 10 years ago, I would say of course he would survive it. He would talk to them in Arabic. He will manage the situation. He would have agency. But we know he was injured. And it makes us very, very worried about the condition in which he was — he’s surviving there. And I think that the fear of how much suffering the hostages are going through really makes you unable to function at moment.

Yocheved, the government has been doing a military operation since October in Gaza. You have been fighting very hard since October to free the hostages, including Oded. I wonder how you see the government’s military operation. Is it something that harms your cause or potentially helps it?

The only thing that will bring them back are agreements. And what is happening is that there are many soldiers who have been killed, and there is an ongoing war, and the hostages are still in captivity. So it’s only by reaching an agreement that all of the hostages will be released.

Do you believe that Israel is close to reaching an agreement?

I don’t know.

You told us that after the Holocaust, your father gathered your family together to tell you that God did not save you. It was a crisis for him. I’m wondering if this experience, October 7, your captivity, challenged your faith in a similar way.

No, I don’t think it changed me. I’m still the same person with the same beliefs and opinions. But how should I say it? What the Hamas did was to ruin a certain belief in human beings. I didn’t think that one could reach that level that isn’t that much higher than a beast. But my opinion and my view of there still being peace and reaching an arrangement stayed the same.

You still believe in peace?

Why do you believe that?

Because I’m hoping that a new generation of leaders will rise, people who act in transparency, who speak the truth, people who are honest, the way Israel used to be and that we’ll return to be like we once were.

I go to many rallies and demonstrations, and I meet many people in many places. And a large part of those people still believe in reaching an arrangement in peace and for there to be no war. And I still hope that this is what we’re going to be able to have here.

Bring them home now! Bring them home now! Bring them home now! Bring them home now! Bring them home! Now! Bring them home! Now! Bring them home! Now! Bring them home!

Yocheved is now living in a retirement home in the suburbs of Tel Aviv. Five other people around her age from Nir Oz live there too. One is also a released hostage. She hasn’t been able to bring herself to go back to the kibbutz. The life she built there with Oded is gone — her photographs, his records, the piano. And the kibbutz has become something else now, a symbol instead of a home. It is now buzzing with journalists and politicians. For now, Yocheved doesn’t know if she’ll ever go back. And when Sharone asked her, she said, let’s wait for Dad.

So I’m today sitting in this assisted living, surrounded by the same company, just expecting Oded, waiting for Oded to come back. And then each and every one of us will be rebuilding his own life together and renewing it.

What are you doing to make it a home for Oded?

We have a piano. We were given a piano, a very old one with a beautiful sound. And it’s good. Oded is very sensitive to the sound. He has absolute hearing. And I’m just hoping for him to come home and start playing the piano.

Do you believe that Oded will come home?

I’d like to believe. But there’s a difference between believing and wanting. I want to believe that he’ll be back and playing music. I don’t think his opinions are going to change. He’s going to be disappointed by what happened. But I hope he’s going to hold on to the same beliefs. His music is missing from our home.

[SPEAKING HEBEW]:

[SPEAKING HEBREW] [PLAYING PIANO]

I know that my father always felt that we haven’t given peace a chance. That was his opinion. And I think it’s very hard to speak for my father because maybe he has changed. Like my mom said, she said, I hope he hasn’t changed. I haven’t changed. But the truth is we don’t know. And we don’t the story. We don’t know how the story — my father is ending or just beginning.

But I think you have to hold on to humanistic values at this point. You have to know what you don’t want. I don’t want more of this. This is hell. This is hell for everybody. So this is no, you know? And then I believe that peace is also gray, and it’s not glorious, and it’s not simple. It’s kind of a lot of hard work. You have to reconcile and give up a lot. And it’s only worth doing that for peace.

[PIANO PLAYING CONTINUES]

After weeks of negotiations, talks over another hostage release and ceasefire have reached an impasse. The sticking points include the length of the ceasefire and the identity and number of Palestinian prisoners to be exchanged for the hostages.

[BACKGROUND CONVERSATION IN HEBREW]:

Here’s what else you should know today. Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Thursday, capping an extraordinary saga that upended the multi-trillion-dollar crypto industry. Bankman-Fried, the founder of the cryptocurrency exchange, FTX, was convicted of wire fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering last November.

Prosecutors accused him of stealing more than $10 billion from customers to finance political contributions, venture capital investments, and other extravagant purchases. At the sentencing, the judge pointed to testimony from Bankman-Fried’s trial, saying that his appetite for extreme risk and failure to take responsibility for his crimes amount to a quote, “risk that this man will be in a position to do something very bad in the future.”
