For instance, the programs are scheduled to ensure that learners who are in active job with tight work schedule, parents taking care of their children, and persons living outside the catchment areas of the learning institutions can create time and study at their own convenient time. The days when a student had to attend a traditional brick and mortar institution of higher learning, such as a local community college or a state-based university, in order to obtain an education are long gone, thanks to what has become the future of higher education–distance learning or attending college and/or university classes via the World Wide Web as a long-distance student. Nowadays, for most people seeking a higher education, distance learning helps to “remove the traditional boundaries of time and location” by offering more flexibility related to choosing a timeframe in which to take classes online. Distance learning also allows a student to remain in the comfort of his/her own home without having to worry about driving back and forth to school and lets the student choose where and when to study the required course materials (Online and Distance Learning, 2013).

According to a 2013 survey conducted by the Instructional Technology Council, part of the American Association of Community Colleges, the demand for online educational resources continues to expand “at a rate that is much greater than the demand for on-campus, face-to-face courses.” One unfortunate result of this trend is that student enrollment at major US colleges and universities have dropped considerably, due in part to the costs associated with attending a traditional brick and mortar institution and the current recessionary economic status of the US (2012 Distance Education Survey Results, 2012).

Statistically, this survey revealed that enrollments related to distance education online classes expanded by almost 7% between the fall of 2011 and that of 2012. This demonstrates that the popularity of online long distance learning classes continues to increase as a result of some surprising numbers in an earlier survey made between 2007 and 2008 when online enrollment stood at 22% of the entire number of students seeking a higher education in the US (2012 Distance Education Survey Results, 2012). Thus, it is clear that current and potential students are beginning to see the advantages related to distance learning; this also holds true for the US Department of Education and other educational agencies which have begun to offer financial student aid and federal grants to those who choose to obtain their education online (2012 Distance Education Survey Results, 2012).

Perhaps the most important area related to distance learning is that it saves time and money by being able to work from home in a setting of one’s own choosing. Most students have pointed out in other surveys that distance learning offers them a good deal of flexibility as opposed to a traditional brick and mortar school. For example, distance learning allows students to complete their coursework from any location, such as through a local library internet connection or by using their own personal computers at home or even a portable laptop computer. Distance learning also eliminates the need to commute between home and school which helps to “cut down on costly gas or public transportation” (Advantages and Disadvantages of Distance Learning, 2014). Lastly, distance learning allows students to take their time related to completing their degree and of course makes it easier to manage one’s responsibilities related to employment and tending to the needs of a family (Advantages and Disadvantages of Distance Learning, 2014). Altogether, distance learning appears to be the trend of the future related to obtaining a higher education and as technology increases the efficiency of the World Wide Web, distance learning will remain as an excellent alternative to the traditional brick and mortar concept.

Online chat or recorded tutorial courses with extended classes comprised of students and instructors worldwide make up the majority of distance learning; despite the contradicting claims that distance learning limits learners from physically interacting with others, such a technique may be effective in allowing learners to decide when and where to hold their classes. This paper will explore the question of the extent Distance Learning can be used as an effective tool for promoting equal educational opportunities instead of as a flawed system that deteriorates student performance. Distance classes open up opportunities for the growing pool of unconventional children pursuing a college degree or postgraduate ongoing professional development in a manner that standard campus-based programs simply cannot.

Indonesia Education Readiness Conducting Distance Learning in Covid-19 Pandemic Situation by Churiyah et al. represents the Indonesian government’s attitude to this phenomenon (491). Moreover, in A Shift from Classroom to Distance Learning: Advantages and Limitations by Sadeghi, the author discusses distance learning in all its terms (80). All three articles cover the topic of distance learning in the context of the coronavirus and everyday practice. However, Sadeghi’s article seems to be the most priority among all three articles, as it reveals this topic in a pros and cons format that is understandable to everyone.

This article consists of distance learning theory, its history, and its advantages and disadvantages. The article’s primary purpose is to familiarize itself since it does not prove anything but explains the complex in simple language. The author states that students participating in distance education may not always be present at a school (Sadeghi 80). According to the author, the likelihood of being distracted and forgetting deadlines is considered when there is no teacher for face-to-face interaction and no classmates to assist with ongoing reminders about pending work (Sadeghi 84). Additionally, because training is done online, there is almost no physical interaction between students and instructors.

In conclusion, the author states that while distance learning programs and courses are here to stay and will grow in the future, many unclear concerns still need to be defined and looked at. The author believes that the other significant issue is that employers still favor traditional college or university degrees over those obtained through online or remote learning. Summing up, one can note the deep work carried out in the study of the concepts of distance learning.

In the modern world of education traditional study at the universities and colleges is gradually complemented or even replaced by new technologies of distance learning. If you’re at a point in your life where you’re considering continuing your education, you may wonder if online learning is the right path for you.

Taking an online course requires a notable investment of time, effort, and money, so it’s important to feel confident about your decision before moving forward. While online learning works incredibly well for some people, it’s not for everyone.

We recently sat down with MIT xPRO Senior Instructional Designer and Program Manager Luke Hobson to explore the pros and cons of online learning and what to look for in an online course. If you’re waiting for a sign about whether or not to enroll in that course you’ve been eying, you just might find it here.

Pros of Online Learning

First, let’s take a look at the true value of online learning by examining some of the benefits:

1. Flexibility

Online learning’s most significant advantage is its flexibility. It’s the reason millions of adults have chosen to continue their education and pursue certificates and degrees.

Asynchronous courses allow learners to complete work at their own pace, empowering them to find the optimal time to consume the content and submit assignments.

Some people are more attentive, focused, and creative in the mornings compared to the evenings and vice versa. Whatever works best for the learners should be the priority of the learning experience.

2. Community

When Luke asks people about their main reason for enrolling in a course, a common answer is networking and community.

Learners crave finding like-minded individuals who are going through the same experiences and have the same questions. They want to find a place where they belong. Being in the company of others who understand what they’re going through can help online learners who are looking for support and motivation during challenging times and times that are worth celebrating.

Some learners have created study groups and book clubs that have carried on far beyond the end of the course-it’s amazing what can grow from a single post on a discussion board!

3. Latest information

“Speed is a massive benefit of online learning,” and according to Luke, it often doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

“When we say speed, we don’t mean being quick with learning. We mean actual speed to market. There are so many new ideas evolving within technical spaces that it’s impossible to keep courses the way they were originally designed for a long period of time.”

Luke notes that a program on Additive Manufacturing , Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality , or Nanotechnology must be checked and updated frequently. More formal learning modalities have difficulty changing content at this rapid pace. But within the online space, it’s expected that the course content will change as quickly as the world itself does.

Cons of Online Learning

Now that we’ve looked at some of the biggest pros of online learning, let’s examine a few of the drawbacks:

1. Learning environment

While many learners thrive in an asynchronous learning environment, others struggle. Some learners prefer live lessons and an instructor they can connect with multiple times a week. They need these interactions to feel supported and to persist.

Most learners within the online space identify themselves as self-directed learners, meaning they can learn on their own with the right environment, guidance, materials, and assignments. Learners should know themselves first and understand their preferences when it comes to what kind of environment will help them thrive.

2. Repetition

One drawback of online courses is that the structure can be repetitive: do a reading, respond to two discussion posts, submit an essay, repeat. After a while, some learners may feel disengaged from the learning experience.

There are online courses that break the mold and offer multiple kinds of learning activities, assessments, and content to make the learning experience come alive, but it may take some research to find them-more on what to look for in an online course later in this article! Luke and his colleagues at MIT xPRO are mindful of designing courses that genuinely engage learners from beginning to end.

3. Underestimation

Luke has noticed that some learners underestimate how much work is required in an online course. They may mistakenly believe that online learning is somehow “easier” compared to in-person learning.

For those learners who miscalculate how long they will need to spend online or how challenging the assignments can be, changing that mindset is a difficult process. It’s essential to set aside the right amount of time per week to contribute to the content, activities, and assignments. Creating personal deadlines and building a study routine are two best practices that successful online learners follow to hold themselves accountable.

Since the start of the millennium, computers and the Internet have greatly expanded the options for education seekers everywhere. This sample essay discusses how with the ability to simply log in to a class from the remote comforts of a PC or laptop, it's no longer necessary to live nearby a campus or university. 

When a course is conducted online, lectures are normally given via streaming audio and video, which allows students to schedule their own "class time" at any hour, day or night.  For people who lead busy lives and juggle school between work and social commitments, online—aka distance learning—courses are often the perfect fit. For the disabled and those who lack sufficient means of transportation, the option to learn online makes it far easier to earn credits toward postsecondary degrees. 

Since the late noughties, the distance learning format has rapidly gained support among college administrators throughout the U.S. In a 2013 study of more than 2,800 colleges by the Babson Survey Research Group, it was found that 7.1 million students had taken one or more online courses over the past year. The figure marked a 6.1% increase—accounting for roughly 400,000 students—over 2012 online enrollment rates ("2013 – Grade Change").

Five things to consider about online courses

For people who are new to the concept of distance learning, one question immediately springs to mind: do online courses offer a viable alternative to onsite classes? The answer could all depend on a variety of factors, including:

  • Are classes for a particular major being offered online?
  • Is the online course being offered by a reputable institution?
  • Does the discipline in question translate well to a distance learning environment?
  • Does an applicant have the self-discipline to complete and upload coursework in a timely manner?
  • Does one have sufficient computer skills to participate and keep the pace in an online learning environment?

The first three questions can be answered pretty quickly by examining a school's ratings and degree programs. 

The points addressed by the last two questions, however, should be kept in mind throughout one's period of adjustment to distance learning. After all, it might seem easy to take a course on a PC or laptop , but it still requires focus, hard work, and a commitment of time and energy. Furthermore, some online courses present technical challenges that are rarely faced in a classroom setting, and thus would require advanced computer savvy just to stay the pace ("Distance Learning").

On-site attendance: Inconvenient or worth the commute?

For centuries, people have moved far away from home to attend college. Today, as more degree programs are being offered online, the options are increasing for people who can't move to attend school due to various factors, such as personal commitments or finances. Still, an on-campus learning experience could be more preferable for many different topics; particularly when it comes to hands-on, technical skill-building majors. 

Therefore, there are two things to consider before ruling out the on-site learning experience:

  • If the right school exists in-state, is the campus situated within a reasonable distance from home? 
  • If not, is the campus located in an area that would be personally suitable for relocation?

If the answer to both questions is "no," yet the school in question offers the best degree programs for both online and on-site students, distance learning could be the best option.

Before settling on an online education, one should also read up on whether a given program includes compulsories such as on-site exams, internships, or supervised training hours. After all, just because a program is conducted online, there could still be the occasional test or session where physical, on-site attendance is required.

A further possible advantage to an on-site degree program is lower tuition . In some cases, online-learning institutes charge a flat tuition rate for students everywhere, whereas local two and four-year colleges could offer lower rates for in-state students. 

The motivation factor

The ability to choose between online and on-site courses allows students to better gauge their own individual learning styles. As such, a student can now decide whether he or she finds it easier to digest information on a computer at home, or in the live setting of a classroom. Motivation is a key factor in this regard; some people feel a greater sense of motivation and find it easier to concentrate in the comfort of their living rooms, while others harness those same energies in public surroundings, where leisurely distractions and lax time restrictions aren't part of the equation. 

In order to muster the motivation needed for an online learning environment, a student should have the following traits:

  • The self-discipline to plan out a full-day's chores and fulfill everything on the checklist, hour by hour; day after day.
  • The ability to absorb volumes of written information without the reinforcement of an in-class lecture.

Basically, a student must be an organized, self-disciplined individual who can regularly commit time to the weekly workload of a distance learning program.

On the other hand, a student might not be suited for online courses if he or she inherently views learning as a collective process that can only occur in a classroom. For a lot of students, the basic amenities of on-site classes are vital; many would argue that it's often hard to gain an understanding of certain course materials without a teacher present; or to feel inspired about a class and its curriculum without the company of classmates. 

Can the Course be Taught Online?

When it comes to learning formats, the availability of one or the other could vary according to the program. Simply put, not all programs are suited to the distance learning format. Contrastingly, the online environment can actually enhance the experience of certain other fields of study.

Examples of programs that don't suit the online format include chemistry, engineering, nursing , and anything else that requires hands-on involvement. With chemistry, for instance, a typical course will include lab time where students mix chemicals in beakers; such activities cannot be approximated over the Internet. Likewise, nursing courses usually consist of time at clinics where students practice patient care on dummies and live volunteers. Courses in things like welding, construction, and mechanics are similarly ill-suited to the distance learning format; it simply isn't possible for students to gain such skills without tactical participation in a workshop setting.

Programs that are more applicable to the online environment include disciplines that consist primarily of reading comprehension and problem-solving skills, such as literature, math, history, science, information technology , and business. For each of the first three examples, the straightforward curriculum—reading, assignments/essays, quizzes—can easily be conducted over the Internet. For IT majors, the program can actually be enhanced through online coursework, since it further incorporates the very medium that IT graduates use most in the industry (Miller).

Ultimately, the suitability of distance learning could all depend on a student's chosen major.

Do companies hire applicants with online degrees?

One question that sometimes escapes the minds of prospective distance-learning students is whether or not an online degree will be accepted in a given industry. Therefore, it's wise to do some research on a particular industry's attitude toward online-degree holders before preparing for that industry through distance learning courses. 

As of now, perceptions of online-degree holders are mixed among employers. During its early days, the degree-type met with more resistance (Columbaro and Monaghan); but as pointed out in a 2007 Chronicle of Higher Education piece, most of the negative attitudes came from employers with little knowledgeable of distance learning, who merely judged the concept at face value (Carnevale).

Since 2010, however, attitudes have grown increasingly positive as more companies have hired online-degree holders, whom tests show perform just as well as colleagues who were educated through traditional means. That year, an analysis of 45 different studies on the topic by the U.S. Department of Education found that degrees earned through online classes generate the same levels of skill and competency as degrees earned through on-site classes (Means et al.) Furthermore, students who earned degrees through a combination of campus and distance learning courses were found to be even more competent and skillful than students who'd only taken one or the other.

Nonetheless, skepticism of online learners lingers on in certain sectors. According to a 2013 Public Agenda survey, 56% of employers would prefer that job applicants earn degrees through on-site classes ("Not Yet Sold"). Then again, 45% of those surveyed also perceived online learners as being more disciplined than their in-class counterparts. The takeaway from all of this is that employers are coming around to the concept, albeit slowly.

At some point down the line, degrees earned via distance learning will cease to be stigmatized as increasing numbers of young workers enter the job market having taken the bulk of their college courses online. In the mean time, a possible way to ease doubts among skeptical employers is to back up an online degree with a competency test from an accredited university.

How to Resist the Temptation of AI When Writing

Whether you're a student, a journalist, or a business professional, knowing how to do high-quality research and writing using trustworthy data and sources, without giving in to the temptation of AI or ChatGPT , is a skill worth developing.

As I detail in my book Writing That Gets Noticed , locating credible databases and sources and accurately vetting information can be the difference between turning a story around quickly or getting stuck with outdated information.

For example, several years ago the editor of Parents.com asked for a hot-take reaction to country singer Carrie Underwood saying that, because she was 35, she had missed her chance at having another baby. Since I had written about getting pregnant in my forties, I knew that as long as I updated my facts and figures, and included supportive and relevant peer-reviewed research, I could pull off this story. And I did.

The story ran later that day , and it led to other assignments. Here are some tips I’ve learned that you should consider mastering before you turn to automated tools like generative AI to handle your writing work for you.

Identify experts, peer-reviewed research study authors, and sources who can speak with authority—and ideally, offer easily understood sound bites or statistics on the topic of your work. Great sources include professors at major universities and media spokespeople at associations and organizations.

For example, writer and author William Dameron pinned his recent essay in HuffPost Personal around a statistic from the American Heart Association on how LGBTQ people experience higher rates of heart disease based on discrimination. Although he first found the link in a secondary source (an article in The New York Times ), he made sure that he checked the primary source: the original study that the American Heart Association gleaned the statistic from. He verified the information, as should any writer, because anytime a statistic is cited in a secondary source, errors can be introduced.

Jen Malia, author of  The Infinity Rainbow Club  series of children’s books (whom I recently interviewed on my podcast ), recently wrote a piece about dinosaur-bone hunting for Business Insider , which she covers in her book Violet and the Jurassic Land Exhibit.

After a visit to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Malia, whose books are set in Philadelphia, found multiple resources online and on the museum site that gave her the history of the Bone Wars , information on the exhibits she saw, and the scientific names of the dinosaurs she was inspired by. She also used the Library of Congress’ website, which offers digital collections and links to the Library of Congress Newspaper Collection.

Malia is a fan of searching for additional resources and citable documents with Google Scholar . “If I find that a secondary source mentions a newspaper article, I’m going to go to the original newspaper article, instead of just stopping there and quoting,” she says.

Your local public library is a great source of free information, journals, and databases (even ones that generally require a subscription and include embargoed research). For example, your search should include everything from health databases ( Sage Journals , Scopus , PubMed) to databases for academic sources and journalism ( American Periodical Series Online , Statista , Academic Search Premier ) and databases for news, trends, market research, and polls (t he Harris Poll , Pew Research Center , Newsbank , ProPublica ).

Even if you find a study or paper that you can’t access in one of those databases, consider reaching out to the study’s lead author or researcher. In many cases, they’re happy to discuss their work and may even share the study with you directly and offer to talk about their research.

For journalist Paulette Perhach’s article on ADHD in The New York Times, she used Epic Research to see “dual team studies.” That's when two independent teams address the same topic or question, and ideally come to the same conclusions. She recommends locating research and experts via key associations for your topic. She also likes searching via Google Scholar but advises filtering it for studies and research in recent years to avoid using old data. She suggests keeping your links and research organized. “Always be ready to be peer-reviewed yourself,” Perhach says.

When you are looking for information for a story or project, you might be inclined to start with a regular Google search. But keep in mind that the internet is full of false information, and websites that look trustworthy can sometimes turn out to be businesses or companies with a vested interest in you taking their word as objective fact without additional scrutiny. Regardless of your writing project, unreliable or biased sources are a great way to torpedo your work—and any hope of future work.

Author Bobbi Rebell researched her book Launching Financial Grownups using the IRS’ website . “I might say that you can contribute a certain amount to a 401K, but it might be outdated because those numbers are always changing, and it’s important to be accurate,” she says. “AI and ChatGPT can be great for idea generation,” says Rebell, “but you have to be careful. If you are using an article someone was quoted in, you don’t know if they were misquoted or quoted out of context.”

If you use AI and ChatGPT for sourcing, you not only risk introducing errors, you risk introducing plagiarism—there is a reason OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is being sued for downloading information from all those books.

Audrey Clare Farley, who writes historical nonfiction, has used a plethora of sites for historical research, including Women Also Know History , which allows searches by expertise or area of study, and JSTOR , a digital library database that offers a number of free downloads a month. She also uses Chronicling America , a project from the Library of Congress which gathers old newspapers to show how a historical event was reported, and Newspapers.com (which you can access via free trial but requires a subscription after seven days).

When it comes to finding experts, Farley cautions against choosing the loudest voices on social media platforms. “They might not necessarily be the most authoritative. I vet them by checking if they have a history of publication on the topic, and/or educational credentials.”

When vetting an expert, look for these red flags:

  • You can’t find their work published or cited anywhere.
  • They were published in an obscure journal.
  • Their research is funded by a company, not a university, or they are the spokesperson for the company they are doing research for. (This makes them a public relations vehicle and not an appropriate source for journalism.)

And finally, the best endings for virtually any writing, whether it’s an essay, a research paper, an academic report, or a piece of investigative journalism, circle back to the beginning of the piece, and show your reader the transformation or the journey the piece has presented in perspective.

As always, your goal should be strong writing supported by research that makes an impact without cutting corners. Only then can you explore tools that might make the job a little easier, for instance by generating subheads or discovering a concept you might be missing—because then you'll have the experience and skills to see whether it's harming or helping your work.
