3d paper stars {christmas ornaments}.

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclaimer .

In today’s post: Learn how to make dimensional 3D paper stars to hang on your Christmas tree! You can use origami paper or scrapbook paper. This is an easy Christmas craft that takes about fifteen minutes to make.

Easy! 3D Paper Christmas stars.

These 3D Christmas stars are easy to make and turn out so pretty! The five point origami stars I made a few years ago have been one of my most popular Christmas craft tutorials, but these are even cooler! They are cut and folded to give them dimension which makes them look complicated, but they’re not! Your first star will probably take about 15 minutes to make – although once you’ve made a few you’ll be able to do it in half the time – and this is a great DIY Christmas decoration you can make while watching a cozy holiday show.

3d paper star Christmas ornament.

There’s only one supply you need to make these paper stars, and that’s paper! You can use origami paper or scrapbook paper, which comes in many different colors and prints. I got the two papers I used in these photos at Hobby Lobby. When purchasing paper, be sure you are getting paper that feels thin, like copy paper, and NOT card stock or other thick paper, which will be too hard to bend.

Along with paper, you’ll need a couple of tools to make these stars:

  • Paper Trimmer
  • Hot Glue Gun

Supplies: paper, ruler, scissors, pen, hot glue gun, trimmer.

If you are using 12×12 inch sheets of scrapbook paper, you’ll need to cut them into smaller squares (this is why a paper trimmer is useful). You can cut each sheet of 12×12 inch paper into four 6-inch square or 9 4-inch squares. 6-inch squares make a star that is 8 inches tall while 4-inch squares make a star that is 5.5 inches tall. You’ll use two squares of paper for each star, which means you can make 2 of the larger stars or 4 of the smaller stars from each piece of paper! If you’d like to make different sizes, just start with larger or smaller square pieces of paper.

Six inch squares of paper and four inch squares of paper.

How to Make 3D Paper Stars Video

These stars are very easy to make! I’ve created a video that shows every step so you can watch the entire process. Additionally, below the video I’ve included written instructions as well as step by step photos.

Make the Base Folds

You’ll start with your square of paper turned over so the back of it is facing up. Begin by folding it diagonally and creasing. Open it up and fold it the other way diagonally. Open it again and fold it in half side to side. Open it back up and fold it top to bottom. Press each fold thoroughly to make good creases.

Folding the paper in half diagonally both ways, folding the paper in half vertically both ways.

Now when you open the paper square you have all the base folds completed. I’ve highlighted them in blue in this photo:

Square of paper with vertical, horizontal, and diagonal folds.

Measure and Cut

Next you’ll measure in from the outer edge of the paper on the horizontal and vertical folds. Measure 1.25 inches from the edge if you’re using a 6-inch square (7/8 of an inch from the edge if you’re using a 4-inch square) and make a mark. Then cut along the fold in to those marks.

Measuring in 1.25 inches on each straight fold. Cutting to the mark.

Make the final Folds

Now you’ll make the last set of folds. Place the paper with one corner up. Take the corner you just created by cutting and fold it in to line up with the diagonal fold, as you see below. The folds you make in this step are marked in blue dotted lines. Repeat on all four corners.

Folding the corner that was just cut to touch the diagonal fold line.

Create the Dimension

Now it’s time to create the dimension on our star. Each corner now has two “flaps”. Place a small amount of hot glue on the right side flap (shown with the thick blue line in the first photo below). Then bring the left side flap over the right one and overlap it about 2/3 of the way. Hold for a few seconds until secure. Then repeat with the other three corners.

Placing hot glue on the right flap, overlapping the left flap 2/3 of the way to secure.

These overlaps will create dimension on the other side of the star and you’ll end up with a four point 3D star:

Dimensional four point star.

Glue two stars together

Repeat the entire process with another square of paper so you have two 4-point stars. The backs of each star will be flat with a hole in the middle. Place some hot glue on the back of one star in the places shown below:

Placing glue on the back of the star.

Place the other star on top of it, back to back, staggering the points. Hold for a moment for the glue to adhere.

Holding two stars together to adhere.

It can be hard to get the glue in exactly the right place, especially on your first star, but don’t stress. Hot glues dries clear so it won’t be visible if there’s a little extra. Once the two stars are connected at a couple points, you can add a bit more glue at the other contact points.

Adding more hot glue where the stars meet to secure.

Add a Hanging Loop

At this point your star is done! You can nestle them right into your Christmas tree. Or, if you’d like, you can glue a loop of twine or jute onto the back of one of the points of the star to turn the star into a Christmas ornament.

How to make paper stars.

December 8, 2021 by Janice

This post may contain affiliate links. Read my disclosure policy here .

You won’t believe how quickly and easily you can fold paper stars! In this tutorial, I walk you through each step to show you exactly how to make paper stars. All you need is a square piece of paper or cardstock and a pair of scissors and you can learn to fold these one-cut paper stars in under a minute.

How to Make Paper Stars

When I was a kid, I always wanted to master the art of origami. I was fascinated by the folded paper creations – but origami books were confusing and I didn’t have anyone to sit down next to me and patiently teach me.

But now we have the internet — and we can learn anything! So I am finally learning how to fold some basic origami and kirigami like this five-point, one-cut folded paper star.

The word origami comes from the Japanese word “ori” which means “folding”, and kami which means “paper” and while it is generally associated with its Japanese roots, nowadays origami refers to paper folding practices from various cultures. While original Japanese origami included the use of cuts, modern origami does not include cutting or glue, and folded designs that use cuts are called kirigami.

how to make five point paper stars

So, if you want to get technical about such matters since this five-point folded paper star design uses a cut to complete the design it is actually kirigami, not origami. But whatever you call it, folding these paper stars is so fun and so easy you won’t be able to stop once you get the hang of it.

I made this video tutorial demonstrating origami star instructions, so you can easily master folding paper stars and I have also included a step by step photo tutorial for additional reference. So let’s get folding…

How to Make a Five-Point, One-Cut Paper Star

Cut a square from a piece of paper or cardstock.

How to Make Paper Stars Tutorial

To make these paper stars, I used some handmade paper I bought years ago and had in my scrapbooking paper stash.

You can use any paper or cardstock, just make sure you cut it into a square. Since the paper I had was 8.5″x 11″, I cut 2.5″ off one side to make an 8.5″x 8.5″

I then cut squares from the scraps to make my smaller stars.

Fold the square piece of paper in half with the open edge facing you.

How to make paper stars step by step tutorial

Create a creased intersection to mark the center of the left side of the folded paper.

How to make paper stars step by step tutorial

I marked the creased intersection so it is easier to see for this tutorial, but you do not need to mark yours. This part of the paper will be cut off and will not be a part of your star.

How to make paper stars step by step tutorial

Bring the top right folded corner to the point of intersection and press down folded edges.

How to fold a paper star - step by step instructions

Fold back so the folded edges are flush on the right side as shown below.

How to make paper stars tutorial

Fold top left corner down to the diagonal folded edge, as shown below.

How to make paper stars step by step tutorial

Fold backward along the line where the diagonal folds meet.

How to make paper stars step by step tutorial

Your folded piece will now have look like the photo below. If you are confused at any time, watch our video tutorial.

How to make paper stars step by step tutorial

Now, you will make one cut to create the star. Where you make this cut will determine the size and shape of your star.

how to fold a one cut paper star instructions

A wider cut will make a wider star and a tighter cut will make a star with sharper points.

To make uniform stars, you can create a creased cutting line by folding the triangle fold of paper back to the bottom fold, as shown below.

how to fold a one cut paper star instructions

Cut along the folded crease.

how to fold a one cut paper star instructions

Open the cut triangle to reveal your star and then refold the peaks and valleys that are going in the wrong direction.

Half of the star has the correct peaks and valleys, but the other side will need to be refolded in the correct direction. The long folds should be peaks and the short folds should be valleys.

Origami stars are great gifts to give to friends or loved ones. Mini origami stars, also known as lucky stars, are usually made to fill a glass jar and display. They are also easy and simple to make, ideal for beginners. Larger, four pointed origami stars can be used as decorations on a table or strung up with string as ornaments or a garland. They are a bit more difficult to make and more time consuming. But if you are an intermediate or advanced origami maker, you should be able to fold four pointed stars easily.

Making a Mini Star

Step 1 Take a piece of 8.5 x 11 paper.

  • If you are doing traditional origami, you will fold and rip the paper.
  • You want the strip to be a half inch wide and 11 inches long.
  • The short end should be over the long end.
  • You should be able to do this without scissors, but if you left your short end a bit too long, snip it shorter with scissors.
  • Start over with a new strip of paper if you have to snip off more than a ½ inch on the short side.
  • You should now have a perfect little paper pentagon.
  • Rotate the star and push on the remaining side to completely inflate the star.
  • Enjoy your mini origami star!

Making a Four Pointed Star

Step 1 Take a 6” x 6” square piece of origami paper.

  • Turn the paper over so the decorative or colored side is down.
  • You should have an X crease on the paper.
  • You should have three horizontal folds on the paper.
  • You should now have three vertical folds on the paper.
  • It should now look like the paper is divided into a three by three grid.
  • Take the top right corner of the paper and fold it so it meets the top right corner of the bottom right square on the paper. Then, unfold the corner.
  • You should now have four diagonal folds on the paper. [9] X Research source
  • Unfold the mountain fold. You should have a diagonal fold on the top left corner.
  • Make the valley fold by taking the top left corner and folding it over so it covers the first ⅔ of the folded section. Then, unfold it. You should have a triangular shaped fold on the folded section. [11] X Research source
  • Once the triangle shape on the paper opens, fold down the top of the paper so it lays down horizontally. It should now look like you have a triangle shape coming out of the side of the paper and a horizontal section. [12] X Research source
  • Take far left section of the folded section between your fingers and pinch it so it folds. This will create a mountain fold. Unfold the fold.
  • Keeping the paper open on these folds, fold over the right side of the paper.
  • The paper should now have a triangle on the top of the folded right side and a triangle coming from the side of the paper.
  • These triangles are going to be the points of your star.
  • Take the bottom right section between your fingers and pinch it so it folds. Then, unfold it. This will create a mountain fold.
  • Then, lift up the flap in the bottom middle of the paper. Fold it to the left. This should then raise the bottom half of the paper.
  • Use the creases you made earlier on the paper to fold up the bottom half of the paper. Lay the bottom of the paper flat. The bottom fold should now look like an upside down triangle with a flat top.

About This Article

To make an origami star, start by taking a long strip of paper and tying a knot close to one end. Then, flatten the edges of the knot so it looks like a pentagon, and valley fold the short end. Next, flip the pentagon over, and valley fold the long end of the strip along the edge of the pentagon. Once you've done that, flip the pentagon over and repeat. Continue to flip and fold until you've used up all of the long end. Finally, push the edges of the pentagon in with your fingers to inflate the star. 3D Paper Star Ornament With Template

Kate Pullen is an accomplished artist and rubber stamping expert with over 15 years of professional crafting experience. She founded the website Away With The Pixels, a digital rubber stamping studio, and conducts craft workshops around the country.

The Spruce / Kate Pullen

  • Working Time: 30 mins
  • Total Time: 1 hr
  • Yield: 1 paper star ornament
  • Skill Level: Beginner
  • Estimated Cost: $5

What You'll Need

Equipment / tools.

  • Bone folder or empty ballpoint pen
  • Glue or double-sided tape
  • Downloadable template
  • 5 sheets thick paper or lightweight cardstock
  • Rubber stamps and inks to decorate the paper (optional)

Instructions

Make this three-dimensional paper star using a downloadable template. Each point of the star is made separately, and when the points are joined, the star has a three-dimensional (3D) form and looks the same from both sides.

You can decorate the flat paper pieces with rubber stamps or add glitter and other decorative touches to the completed star. While the steps are simple and straightforward, it's a good idea to practice making one or two stars using scrap paper before using good paper.

Print the Star Template

Open a full-size version of the template . Download it onto your computer, then print it out full-size on five sheets of paper. Each shape on the star template forms one point of the star. You will need five points to make the star in this project.

Decorate, Cut, and Score the Points

Stamp and decorate the star points as desired. This is easiest to do while the paper is still flat and you haven't yet assembled the star. Allow the paper to dry fully after stamping and decorating before you begin folding it. You can add more decoration after the star is assembled, especially glitter or puffy elements that may fall off while you are folding.

Cut out the five shapes along the solid cutting lines (not the dotted lines), using scissors.

Score along the dotted fold lines, using a bone folder and a ruler. If you don't have a bone folder, you can use an empty ballpoint pen.

Fold the Star Points

Fold along all of dotted the lines on each point piece. Form each point of the star by applying glue or double-sided tape along the long tab and adhering it to the mating edge. Let the glue dry. Repeat until all five points are formed.

Begin the Star Assembly

Start the assembly with two points: Apply glue or double-sided tape along one of the inverted "V" edges of the open part of the point and attach this to the next point as shown. The glued tab fits under the edge of the mating point. Repeat the same process to add three more points.

Attach the Final Point

Attach the fifth point to complete the star after applying glue to the fourth point and the fifth point. This can be a little difficult to do, so it's best to attach one side of the fifth point before attaching the remaining side. Let the glue dry.

Finish the Star

Decorate and display the completed star, as desired. Here are a few ideas:

  • Dot or trail some glitter glue up the sides of each star point to add a touch of sparkle.
  • Make multiple stars and join them with string to make swag or  garland .
  • Create colorful stars using different paper for each point.

how to make an paper star

Folded paper stars are a beginner-friendly DIY that even expert crafters can appreciate—and they're so easy to make that you can have enough on hand to decorate presents, string garlands, or add to your tree in minutes.

Each star is made by folding and cutting a single square of paper (of any size). Until you master the techniques, practice by making four- or five-pointed stars from scraps; wrapping-paper remnants are ideal. If you're unhappy with a star, refold it and cut it again at a different angle. Fashion translucent shapes from waxed paper, glassine, or tissue; for sturdier, opaque stars, use construction paper.

The more points a star has, the more folds you will need to make, so keep the thickness of the stock in mind before you start. Leave the finished shapes plain or dab glue on them and sprinkle with gold, silver, blue, red, or green glitter—or any combination. Then string them onto a garland for your curtain rods, fireplace, Christmas tree, or dining room.

What You'll Need

Equipment / tools.

  • Decorative paper, cut into squares of any size

Instructions

To make a 4-pointed star:.

  • Fold a square of paper in half to form a rectangle, and place it on your work surface so that the crease is at the top and the open end is at the bottom.
  • Fold the two top corners down and toward the center to form a triangle.
  • Take the left corner and fold it over so it meets the right corner; this makes a smaller triangle.
  • With a pair of sharp scissors, cut down diagonally from the right edge of the triangle to just below the midpoint on the left edge. Unfold.

To make a 5-pointed star:

  • Start with the folded rectangle.
  • Bring the upper-right corner down to a point on the left edge of the rectangle, about one-third of the way from the lower-left corner.
  • Bring the top-left corner down and to the right. (The top of the paper will now look like a triangle bisected by a vertical line.)
  • Using the topmost point for reference, fold the paper in half vertically.
  • Cut from the right edge of the shape down to the midpoint on the left edge. Unfold.

To make a 6-pointed star:

  • Bring the upper-right corner down to a point on the bottom edge of the rectangle, about one-quarter of the way from the lower-left corner.
  • Bring the upper-left corner down and to the right so that the top edge of the shape meets the right edge.
  • Cut diagonally from the right edge of the shape down to about the midpoint on the left edge. Unfold.

To make an 8-pointed star:

  • Bring upper-right corner down to the left edge of the rectangle, about one-quarter of the way from the lower-left corner.
  • Bring the upper-left corner down and to the right so that the top edge of the shape meets, but does not overlap, diagonal line made in step two.
  • Fold left side down.
  • Using the topmost point for reference, fold left side in to make a vertical line bisecting the shape.
  • Fold paper in half vertically.
  • Cut diagonally from the right edge down to about the midpoint on left edge; unfold.

To make a 10-pointed star:

  • Bring upper-right corner down to the left edge of the rectangle about one-half of the way from the lower left corner.
  • Bring the top-left corner down and to the right so it overlaps the right part of the shape.
  • Bring the left edge down and to the right until it meets diagonal line created in step three.
  • Using the topmost point for reference, fold left side in to create a vertical line bisecting the shape.
  • Fold in half vertically.
  • Cut diagonally from right edge down to about the midpoint on the left edge. Unfold.

I had tons of other work to do, yet the simplicity and the glam effect of these beauties made me stop and grab some decorative paper and start cutting and gluing. This was the result. Isn't it just PERFECT for a party at Christmas or New Year ?

See how-to...First, these are the first ones I made... ages ago. Now I've updated the tutorial with photo steps. Check it out below.

You'll need:

  • two 6 ½" (16.5 cm) squares of scrapbooking paper or thin cardstock
  • pencil, scissors, glue
  • a string or some twine (see how to make your own twine )

A note on the material used for these easy paper stars: origami paper will be probably best, but even cardboard or gift-wrapping paper will do just as fine. Just bear in mind that it's easier to work with sturdy paper.

You do have these materials, right? Now, off to the tutorial:

How To Use Paper stars As Decoration?

  • place on the mantel during holidays
  • hang on your Christmas tree
  • hang on the front door
  • use with huge pompoms to form a fabulous party backdrop
  • Party decor, hung from the ceiling
  • diy nursery decor, and so much more!

I'm sure you'll want to make some for your home, too. Depending on the paper pattern, these diy origami stars can be used as Christmas decor and New-Year decorations. But I think I'll keep mine all year long. Well, as long as they survive, but this might be longer than I think.

I, for example, was curious enough to hand them to my toddler. Since they are so lightweight, he would handle them really gently, using precise and slow-motion movements when taking them in his hands and placing them back. On a side-note: it's incredible how sensitive the little hands are: give a toddler something sturdy - it will be tossed around, even land on the floor from time to time. Give him something gentle, breakable, he'll handle it with all due care and love. And we think kids just don't get it!

I hope you liked this tutorial for how to make an 8-point paper star. Don't forget to take a photo and tag me @applegreencottage so I can see it, OK? Happy crafting!

How to make $1 beautiful paper Christmas star tree topper. Easy DIY decoration tutorial & crafts idea for modern, boho, farmhouse home decor.

There’s something undeniably magical about stars. They’ve been guiding travelers, inspiring dreamers, and brightening our skies since forever. But come Christmas time, they take on an even more special role, becoming a symbol of hope, joy, and festive celebration.

How to make $1 beautiful paper Christmas star tree topper. Easy DIY decoration tutorial & crafts idea for modern, boho, farmhouse home decor.

Ready to sprinkle some handmade magic onto your festive season? Imagine strolling into a room and seeing this stunning Christmas tree. Your eyes immediately dart to the top – and there it is, a handmade, shiny tree topper that is the perfect finishing touch on your beautifully decorated Christmas tree .

Determined to figure out an easy way to make a 3d Christmas star tree topper, I played around with different ideas, and this 8-pointed paper star is one of my favorite. All you need are paper, scissors and a few other basic materials.

Materials and tools to make paper Christmas star tree topper

  • 2 square sheets of paper or card stock. Regular office paper or lightweight card stock is a breeze to fold, and you can always jazz it up with spray paint later! Or, go bold from the get-go with colored paper or metallic card stock .
  • Scissors, craft glue or glue sticks , and if you’re using card stock, something sturdy like a ruler for those sharp creases. Hot glue and long bamboo skewer to attach the Christmas tree topper
  • Spray paint: after using a bunch of gold spray paint, this one is my favorite, not too yellow, just the perfect elegant gold color. Silver is also a great versatile choice.

Step 1: Fold paper star before cutting

Begin by folding your square paper horizontally. Make a neat crease. For card stock, get that ruler out and get the crease super sharp. Go vertical next – another fold, another crease.

Fold paper star before cutting

Now, channel your inner origami lover. Fold diagonally, unfold, and then fold the other diagonal.

Step 2: Cut and glue paper star points

On the horizontal and vertical creases, mark the 1/4 points and make some cuts. Fold those newly freed “wings” towards each other like they’re coming in for a cozy hug. They’ll form a triangle. Stick them together with some glue.

Cut and glue paper star points

Little insider tip: Want super pointy star spikes? Overlap those wings more. For a gentler vibe, like I went for, don’t overlap them entirely. Just ensure you keep the overlapping consistent for all spikes to get that star symmetry.

Step 3: Assemble paper Christmas star tree topper

Craft another 4-pointed paper star just like in steps 1 and 2. You can make them the same size, or make the second paper star slightly smaller. I trimmed the paper just a bit smaller than the first sheet to make the second star a bit smaller.

Assemble paper Christmas star tree topper

Once you’ve got two 4-pointed stars, it’s bonding time! Glue them back-to-back, or front to back, like I did.

Put a small dab of glue on each of the four joining point, and carefully set the bigger star on top of the slightly smaller one. Now you have a beautiful 8-pointed paper Christmas star.

Step 4: Spray paint the paper Christmas star tree topper

Introduction: How to Make Paper Stars

How to Make Paper Stars

Making paper stars is fun, entertaining, and even relaxing. There are also a handful of reasons why you can be doing it. You can be sitting around, itching to do something. A handful can be a cute gift to a friend or family. The stars can even be a finishing touch in your room, completing an aesthetic. Whatever purpose they are meant to serve, have fun with it!

how to make an paper star

First you want to take any piece of paper of your choosing and cut it into strips. I suggest using a paper that is computer paper size. You also want to make sure that the strips are on the long side, that way you have enough paper to work with.

how to make an paper star

Next take one of the strips of paper and make a "breast cancer" type ribbon at the top. Then take the excess tail that is circled and put it through the loop until a pentagon shape is formed and flatten. Don't pull it too tight, just enough to comfortably make the shape like in the second photo.

how to make an paper star

There will be a little extra paper sticking out after make the pentagon shape. In this step fold that onto the shape to help it stay compact.

how to make an paper star

Now take the long tail and fold it up so it lines up with the adjacent side of the shape. Fold it and press where the the crease of the shape is to help tail fold around side.

how to make an paper star

Turn over the pentagon and fold the tail down at the next adjacent side as before

how to make an paper star

Continue this process a few more time, wrapping the original pentagon with the tail, matching the tail up to the next adjacent sides while continuing to flip the shape around.

Continuation of step 6

how to make an paper star

When there is not enough tail left to fold around: stop. Fold that last tail piece into the little sleeve (circled above) made by overlapping layers.

how to make an paper star

You should end up with a little pentagram shape like this!

how to make an paper star

Now, hold the pentagon between two fingers. Then, with your other hand, begin to pinch the points of the pentagon between two other fingers. Try to pinch inwardly in a way so the the flat shape will begin to "puff up". Proceed to do this to all the points.

how to make an paper star

After you've pinched all the points the paper should have filled with air and created grooves. If so, YOU'VE MADE A STAR!!!

Step 13: The End

The End

The stars can be any color or any pattern. You can make one or a million. I hope the steps were helpful and that you were successful in making a star. I also hope that you had, and will continue to have fun with this!
