My Belief on What It Means to Be a Human Being

Our perception towards the human being forms the core purpose of our nursing practice because nursing is majorly a human practice. In the most fundamental way, nursing is a nourishing process that includes the nurse and a sick person. In my philosophy of nursing, I define the human being as a rational person that exhibit two different realities, a biophysical reality of the body and a psycho-spiritual reality of the spirit and the mind. As nurses, it is important that we become aware of the cultural disparities when giving care to the customers with the understanding that our perception of what is acceptable culturally might not be acceptable to our customers. Ultimately, the healthcare environment is what we give our customers, and it’s the job of the nurse to make sure that the client fits comfortably to the environment. The environment can promote illness and health. Most people function within the environment in which they have inhibited. Every individual is unique in his or her own way with dignity and worth with the capacity to change. Human beings exist in an environment that is very competitive and one that can be affected by the social, physical and the cultural factors. The current environment is characterized by the social and the physical components. The environment is a concern shaped by the transfer of the health risks and the national borders.

What Professional Nursing Ought to Be

In my philosophy, professional nursing is based on individual definitions and the professional organization. Accountability, compassion, and professionalism form a great part in the strive towards professional nursing (Buerhaus, et al., 2015). Nurses must be held to quite high standards by the society as well as the physicians and the other nurses. Self-regulation in the nursing profession calls for personal accountability. Every individual in the profession is required to take an ownership of his or her knowledge base with regards to the professional practice. It is the requirement of every individual to demonstrate a level of personal autonomy and control that adhere within the environment will conforming to the rules and the guidelines that are crucial to the profession. Professional nursing also calls for compassion, tenacity, and understanding. It needs the provision of quality care with utmost patience and respect for the lives of the clients. The relationship between the nurse and the patient should be one that is centered on respect and autonomy of the patient needs. Professionalism should also be upheld through helping others. The nursing code of ethics calls for the nurses to uphold the patient confidentiality and not to engage in activities that are aimed at affecting the relationship between the nurse and the patient (Epstein, & Turner, 2015).

In conclusion, the philosophy of nursing is what draws us together in order for us to uphold our wish as nurses. Personal Philosophy of Nursing

Key concepts of my philosophy.

My philosophy of nursing is based on core beliefs that include professionalism, accountability, compassion, and education. Nurses have the responsibility to promote and protect health and overall human wellbeing. In that regard, they should be accountable for self-regulation, professional development, and the quality of their practice. Success in the nursing profession is achieved through tenacity, compassion, and understanding (Hood, 2013). I believe that nurses should be compassionate toward patients and so treat them with respect, patience, and dignity. Nurses should conduct their practice within the limits of the profession’s code of ethics and standards (Masters, 2015). Moreover, they should strive to improve their knowledge and skills base through continuous learning. It is important to pursue higher education and participates in research studies that aim to enhance the nursing practice (Hood, 2013).

Nursing Metaparadigm

The four nursing metaparadigm include person, health, environment, and nursing (Hood, 2013). The person concept references any individual who is a recipient of nursing care. About this concept, health care, spiritual and social needs are met to improve the person’s health and overall well-being. The environment refers to the internal and external surroundings that patients interact with and that determine their health outcomes (Masters, 2015). It encompasses geographical locations, technology, environmental conditions, and relationships with caregivers and family members. The health component refers to optimal performance in the mental, physical, and emotional states of being. Finally, nursing refers to the process of promoting physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being through prevention and treatment of diseases, as well as through patient education (Hood, 2013). In my nursing practice, I deal with patients with various health care needs every day. In all cases, the environment plays a significant role in the development of their problems. Treatment usually involves medication as well as the adjustment of certain environmental factors to facilitate and speed up the recovery process. I apply my nursing knowledge and skills to alleviate pain and suffering.

The Nursing Process

Application of the philosophy.

My nursing philosophy can be applied in my present nursing practice in various ways. First, it can be used to carry out duties and responsibilities that are aimed at achieving the best possible health outcomes in the delivery of care. For instance, the accountability and professionalism aspects can be used as the foundation for service delivery and the formation of relationships. Second, it can be used during research to manage the direction and scope of studies. My understanding of the aforementioned concepts of the nursing metaparadigm can be used to generate topics for research. Third, the compassion concept can be used to improve the quality of care offered to patients by understanding them more and avoiding the influences of stereotypes. It can be applied in education to offer quality training based on the learning needs of individual needs as well as their areas of specialization.

Strengths and Limitations

The strengths of my philosophy include a wide scope, patient-centeredness, and professionalism. It covers the four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm, focuses primarily on the needs of patients, and promotes the concept of professionalism in nursing practice. Besides, the philosophy promotes personal and professional development because it incorporates the concept of education and its importance in the nursing practice. The philosophy is limited because it does not provide a framework to synchronize personal standards and ethics with those of the nursing profession. A successful practice is determined by the harmony between personal and professional values.

Personal Philosophy of Nursing This paper explores the personal philosophy I have as a nursing student and what I intend to convey throughout my nursing career. Before entering into any profession it is important to evaluate your personal philosophy about the profession, as it pertains to values and principles in which believe in to guide your practice. The field of nursing is more than treating a physiological ailment, but it involves providing quality care for the individualized needs of each patient, hence being client centered. My philosophy of nursing integrates the importance of knowledge base practice of medicine, combined with addressing holistic needs of the patient and family, including the physical, psychological, cognitive, emotional, spiritual and social care (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, 2010). Additionally, a vital aspect of nursing is effective interpersonal relationships with other healthcare professionals to promote quality patient care. Moreover, my philosophy includes the importance the client-nurse relationship to aid in health promotion to prevent illness and increase the level of health of clients. Factors Influencing the Development of Personal Philosophy My philosophy is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. The practice of nursing not only involves applying knowledge but the ability to differentiate the needs of the client and being empathetic to their needs. Hence, the importance of holistic nursing and not only being for the client but for the clients family as well. My Personal Nursing Philosophy

The greatest aspect about nursing is that it is never going to be just a job and is even more than a merely profession. Instead, it is a belief system or way of life and not a discipline that can simply be practiced then abandoned to the dictates of a time clock. To simply say that “I love people” or want to “help people get better” does not demonstrate the drive behind this feeling. Articulating my philosophy is not an easy task, to better explain my philosophy of nursing, I am going to use some values that I have learned. These tools truly explain how I feel and what has motivated me to pursue nursing as a career.

Nursing Philosophy In Nursing

Taking everything in and questioning it gives a more well rounded and in depth knowledge to base each philosophy off of. The main purpose is to care for the individual and I believe holistic approach is a good way to do so. Holistic nursing places emphasis on both the environment and treatment of the patient to include patient’s uniqueness as human beings along with their cultural views, values, and beliefs. (Flagg, 2015). Nursing can be very broad. It is goal oriented to each patient so that his or her individual health needs are met. Some patients could benefit tremendously just by taking them outside to get fresh air or by just sitting down to talk to

My Nursing Journey and My Personal Philosophy of Nursing

My journey to nursing began with my personal healthcare experience, and has continued to evolve since entering the nursing program at State University. My personal philosophy of nursing is related my life experience and my personal philosophy of life. Using reflection-on-action, I have begun to understand the influences that have lead me to nursing. I discovered client and family centered care to be an important quality when I look at the influential nurses in my life. To develop a positive therapeutic nurse-client relationship, nurses must integrate all 5 dimensions of the therapeutic nurse-client relationship into their practice (CNO, 2006). When it comes to providing client-centered care, the dimensions of trust, empathy and respect are particularly important (CNO, 2006). Illness can be a traumatic experience for patients and their families, and it is important to be empathetic to the patient’s needs, while still trusting the patient to be an expert in their illness and care.

The Importance Of Nursing Philosophy

It is important to explore one’s personal values and principles that will guide your nursing practice. Philosophical and theoretical outlooks provide the foundation for all nursing actions including practice and research. A nursing philosophy not only guides one practice but also facilitates knowledge, and the development of knowledge to further advance nursing theory into practice. According to Alpers and Wotring (2013), nursing philosophy helps explore one values, develop imagination, increase understanding and build knowledge with the application of critical thinking into practice. Working in Oncology has helped me achieve and uphold the highest standard of quality care to all patients, whether it is end of life care or new diagnoses

Personal Nursing Philosophy

Every nurse determines the way they will practice in the beginning of their career. More than likely these roles and values are created and sparked in nursing school. As time goes on, nurses dig deeper and establish who they are in their new role as a professional. When the metaparadigm of nursing and personal philosophy coincide with one another, individualized concepts, care, and professionalism are achieved and delivered in multiple settings. From a personal perspective, these concepts were established and developed very early in my career. Maintaining and establishing myself as a nurse remains a top priority ten years later in my practice.

Philosophy of nursing refers to a system of thoughts, beliefs, and principles that guide an individual’s practice in the nursing [profession. This paper will define, describe, and explain my philosophy of nursing based on personal thoughts regarding the four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm including the person/client, environment, health, and nursing.

Factors that Influence the Development of Nursing Philosophy

The factors that influence the development of a nursing philosophy include contemplation of my beliefs and principles, the nursing practice, nursing’s code of ethics, and the interrelationship between the concepts of the nursing metaparadigm that include the client, environment, nursing, and health. These factors have played a great role in influencing my philosophy, which guides my nursing practice.

Person/Client

The main goal of nursing is to improve the wellbeing of the people (Maville & Huerta, 2012). People are central to the formulation of my nursing philosophy because I practice patient-centered care that not only treats illnesses but takes care of the spiritual and emotional aspects of patients. I believe that quality care should be person-centered and not illness-centered. I also believe that nursing should provide care and guidance to patients so that they can thrive beyond the acute-care settings. Person-centered care is beneficial to the patient’s health, creates a favorable environment for recovery, and benefits the society (Maville & Huerta, 2012).

Environment

I believe that a patient should encounter an environment that provides caring relationships, aesthetic beauty, and promotes health and wellbeing (Maville & Huerta, 2012). Also, the environment should be free from threats to wellness. For instance, it should be quiet and serene. I think that health care should be easily accessible and encompass social, cultural, and spiritual dimensions that promote recovery and wellbeing.

I think that health encompasses numerous factors that include physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, social, and cultural wellbeing that allow people to thrive in different environments. In that regard, illness-centered nursing care is a very narrow and ineffective way of proving medical care (Maville & Huerta, 2012). A person’s ability to access health care, financial status, genetics, and environment plays a key role in influencing their health. The health status of a person is determined by how they interact with their environment (Maville & Huerta, 2012).

I believe that nursing is both a discipline and a profession that is based on core human values that include freedom, choice, wellness, responsibility, and compassion. Nursing practice is the creative use of knowledge gathered through research and experience to provide nursing interventions that address the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of patients (Smith & Parker, 2015). The main focus of nursing as professional practice is enhancing the wellness of human beings through the application of concern, knowledge, and compassion.

My nursing philosophy is most compatible with Watson’s human caring theory, Nightingale’s environment theory, and Pender’s health promotion model. Watson postulated that caring for the foundation of the nursing profession (Smith & Parker, 2015). Nightingale’s theory states that here is a direct relationship between a patient and their environment. Pender defines health promotion as a dynamic concept rather than the absence of disease (Smith & Parker, 2015). It is the improvement of human wellbeing.
