The SAT is administered by the CollegeBoard and is given 7 times per year. The exam is a timed, mainly multiple-choice exam, taken by students in high school.

Beginning in the spring of 2024, the SAT will be going fully digital. The digital SAT (DSAT) will have some formatting and content changes to it, along with some other changes. You can review those changes below.

This exam will be given to students starting in spring of 2024.

Old SAT (Written Exam)

The biggest difference between the old SAT and the digital SAT is that the digital SAT is taken completely online and has combined some sections to streamline the exam.

An overview of the digital SAT exam and what is included on the exam.

Scoring of the SAT

You will receive a score for math and a score for reading/writing. Each of those scores will be between 200 and 800 .

Your total score will be the sum of those two scores. You can receive a total score between 400 and 1600 on the SAT.

Steps for Using SAT Practice

When using our free SAT practice tests, we recommend the following steps to get the most out of your time:

  • Take 1 practice exam from each subject.
  • Determine which subject you struggled the most with.
  • Focus on that 1 subject moving forward. Take additional practice exams in that subject, study important concepts, and invest in a SAT prep course if need be.
  • Take a practice exam on that subject again and see where you stand. Continue to focus on that subject if you need more help or move on to another subject if you did well on this practice exam.
  • Repeat steps 3 and 4 for other subjects.

Benefits of Using SAT Practice Questions

There are many benefits to using SAT questions during your prep process. Some of those benefits include:

Help With Timing

The SAT exam is a timed test. Keeping a steady pace is critical to achieving a high score.

You can improve your decision making and your time by taking practice exams.

Test Familiarity

All standardized tests, including the SAT, have their own unique way of presenting questions and answer choices.

You will gain more familiarity and comfort with the SAT question style as you take more practice quizzes. On the real exam day, there will be no surprises.

Efficient Studying

When you take many practice exams, you will get a sense of your test strengths and weaknesses.

Many students mistakenly spend time working on their strengths while ignoring their weaknesses.

Knowing which subjects you struggle with will help you focus your study time.

Work On Problem Solving

Tests like the SAT measure your ability to solve problems, not just memorize information. It is critical to have strong problem-solving abilities.

The answer explanations provided in our score reports can help you understand how to solve problems that you may be struggling with.

How to Study for the SAT

How to study effectively.

Your success on SAT test day depends not only on how many hours you put into preparing but also on whether you prepared the right way. It’s good to check along the way to see whether your studying is paying off. One of the most effective ways to do this is by taking SAT practice tests to evaluate your progress. Practice tests are useful because they show exactly where you need to improve. Every time you take a free SAT practice test, pay special attention to these three groups of questions:

  • The questions you got wrong
  • The ones you had to guess on, even if you guessed right
  • The ones you found difficult or slow to work through

This will show you exactly what your weak areas are and where you need to devote more study time. Ask yourself why each of these questions gave you trouble. Was it because you didn’t understand the material? Was it because you didn’t remember the vocabulary? Do you need more repetitions on this type of question to build speed and confidence? Dig into those questions and figure out how you can strengthen your weak areas as you go back to review the material.

Answer Explanations

Additionally, many SAT practice tests have a section explaining the answer choices. It can be tempting to read the explanation and think that you now have a good understanding of the concept. However, an explanation likely only covers part of the question’s broader context. Even if the explanation makes sense, go back and investigate every concept related to the question until you’re positive you have a thorough understanding.

Comprehend Each Topic

As you go along, keep in mind that the SAT practice test is just that: practice. Memorizing these questions and answers will not be very helpful on the actual test because it is unlikely to have any of the same exact questions. If you only know the right answers to the sample questions, you won’t be prepared for the real thing. Study the concepts until you understand them fully, and then you’ll be able to answer any question that shows up on the test.

Strategy for SAT Practice

When you’re ready to start taking practice tests, follow this strategy:

  • Remove Limitations. Take the first test with no time constraints and with your notes and SAT study guide handy. Take your time and focus on applying the strategies you’ve learned.
  • Time Yourself. Take the second practice test “open book” as well, but set a timer and practice pacing yourself to finish in time.
  • Simulate Test Day. Take any other practice tests as if it were test day. Set a timer and put away your study materials. Sit at a table or desk in a quiet room, imagine yourself at the testing center, and answer questions as quickly and accurately as possible.
  • Keep Practicing. Keep taking practice tests on a regular basis until you run out of practice tests or it’s time for the actual test. Your mind will be ready for the schedule and stress of test day, and you’ll be able to focus on recalling the material you’ve learned.

It is intended to measure a student’s ability and readiness for college courses in three subject areas: Reading; Writing; and Math. Whether you need  SAT tutoring in Atlanta ,  SAT tutoring in Houston , or  SAT tutoring in San Francisco , working one-on-one with an expert may be just the boost your studies need. The results page that follows the test will tell you which concepts you already understand, and which concepts need some additional review. Varsity Tutors also offers resources like an  SAT prep book  to help with your self-paced study, or you may want to consider an  SAT tutor . The results page also offers tons of information you can incorporate into your study plan, like step-by-step explanations of the correct answers and links that provide key concept review. When you’re ready, you can return to take another Full-Length SAT Practice Test to gauge your progress and refine your study plan. In addition to the SAT practice tests and  SAT tutoring , you may also want to consider checking out our  SAT question of the day . How much does it cost to take the SAT? It costs $51.00 to register for the SAT. When can I take the SAT? It is possible to take the SAT in October, November, December, January, May, and June. The SAT is given once during each of these months. You can take the test as many times as you like, but it is most common for students to take the SAT twice: once at the end of their junior year of high school, and once at the beginning of their senior year of high school. Are the SAT’s sections always given in the same order? Yes, the SAT always gives its sections in the same order. The Essay section is always first; it is followed by two multiple-choice Writing sections, three multiple-choice Critical Reading sections, three multiple-choice Mathematics sections, and finally one ungraded multiple-choice section that varies in content. Our free SAT Practice Tests allow you to study what you need to study when you need to study it, so you don’t have to stick with the order of the official SAT test if you don’t want to. What materials can I bring with me when I take the SAT? You must bring your admission ticket and photo identification, i.e. a driver’s license. You will also need two no. 2 pencils, an eraser, and a calculator for the math section. Bringing a small snack and a bottle of water is also recommended, as you’re allowed to drink water and have a snack during the break. How is my SAT Score calculated? For each question on the test students receive 1 point for a correct answer, lose ¼ of a point for each incorrect answer, and receive 0 points for questions left blank. The total of these points is the student’s raw score, which is then transplanted into a scaled score based on the relative success of other students who have taken the same test. The scaled score ranges from 200-800. 200 is the worst possible score you can receive, while 800 is a perfect score. When and how will I find out how I did on the SAT? Generally, students find out how they performed on the SAT about two or three weeks after taking it. Scores can be accessed online or through your school, or they’ll be sent in the mail. If you choose to have your scores sent in the mail, be aware that it will take longer for you to receive your scores than if you accessed them online. What changes are being made to the SAT in 2016? The SAT will be getting a makeover starting in 2016. The essay section for SAT Writing will become optional to students, certain parts of the SAT Math section will no longer allow the use of a calculator, and the total score on the SAT will be changed to a scale of only 1600 (akin to previous versions of the exam). The current guessing penalty will also be removed, crediting skipped questions and incorrect questions equally on the new version of the test. Sentence completion questions, currently found in the SAT Critical Reading section, will be removed and the vocabulary list for the SAT will be changing to more relevant words to the college educational experience. Overall, the new SAT will test the same topics, but in new formats and with new benefits to better accommodate high school curricula and prepare students for college.

Expert tips to prepare for the digital SAT

1.9 million students took the sat last year.

(InvestigateTV) — The College Board recently  launched a new, digital Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) that requires students to use a laptop or tablet to take the test.

Dr. Shaan Patel, the founder and CEO of  Prep Expert , an online company that focuses on SAT and ACT online courses to help students improve their test scores, walked us through some of the changes.

“There’s a brand-new format, brand new question types. There’s a new adaptive testing structure. So, it’s a lot different than the previous paper-based SAT,” Dr. Patel said. “And it’s really important that parents and students get familiar with this new exam because it is such a big change from what most parents and students are used to.”

Dr. Patel said in order for students to prepare effectively for the digital SAT, he recommends looking up high quality practice questions.

“I would recommend going directly to the College Board. So, that’s the company that makes the SAT,” he advised. “They offer something called the  Bluebook application , so that Bluebook app can be downloaded for free. It comes preloaded with hundreds of practice digital SAT questions that will get your student familiar with the particular question types, new format and testing structure for the digital version of the exam.”

But Dr. Patel said it’s not enough to just do practice questions. He said in order to maximize a student’s score it’s also helpful to take a prep course, where they learn to apply high quality strategies and test taking techniques.

For parents worried about a child who doesn’t test well online, Dr. Patel said this new test is nearly two hours shorter than the old test.

He also said there are only 98 questions, instead of the 150 to 200 on the traditional exam.

No more No. 2 pencils. No more bubble sheets. The SAT this year is entirely digital. And that's not the only change for the test.

The new SAT is shorter — just over two hours compared with the roughly three hours for the previous SAT and its main competitor, the ACT. It's adaptive, meaning students who score relatively low on the first half of the test will get easier questions in the second half. There are fewer questions. And students have more time to answer each question.

The College Board, which oversees the test, made all of these changes with the hope of creating a less stressful experience. But Chalkbeat takes a closer look at why the SAT's status is in flux.

The first U.S. students are taking the new SAT this week; the digital SAT launched internationally last year. The College Board is rolling out the digital test after hundreds of U.S. colleges and universities ditched test score requirements for admissions in recent years. More than 1,800 colleges, including large state systems in Texas and California, won't require applicants to submit test scores for the fall of 2025, according to data tracked by FairTest , a research and advocacy group. At the same time, some of the country's most elite institutions are bringing them back .

The test-optional movement, as much as the spread of technology during the pandemic, shaped the College Board's thought process.

"If we're launching a test that is largely optional, how do we make it the most attractive option possible?" said Priscilla Rodriguez, the College Board's senior vice president of college readiness assessments. "If students are deciding to take a test, how do we make the SAT the one they want to take?"

Rodriguez said the College Board feels confident that a score of 900 or a 1300 will tell the same story about a student that it did a year ago.

But critics of the test remain skeptical. They question how the SAT can purport to provide objective information about students while changing the test so much from previous years and giving different students different tests. They worry the College Board is essentially conducting an experiment.

"The College Board gets to do what they want, and we have to trust fall into it," said Jennifer Jessie, an independent college counselor and tutor based in northern Virginia who is steering her students away from the SAT this year.

Digital SAT is shorter — but that's not all

Rodriguez said the pandemic pushed the College Board to create a digital SAT after several years of internal discussion. Most students have school-issued devices, and they're used to working on a computer, she said.

"We were hearing that this was the last high-stakes test students took on paper, and it wasn't natural, and getting those bubble sheets was more stressful," she said.

The digital test is not just the old test moved to a computer, though.

  • Reading passages are much shorter — a single paragraph — because the longer passages didn't render well on the screen.
  • Students will read more than 50 short reading passages with a single question each, instead of nine long passages with multiple questions.
  • Students can use a built-in graphing calculator on the entire test rather than having separate calculator and non-calculator sections.
  • The test is adaptive. Based on their performance on the first section, students will get an easier or a harder second section.

Making the test adaptive is what allows the test to be shorter, Rodriguez said. Because it changes based on how students answer early questions, the test can hone in more efficiently on what students can do.

Students who get the easier second section won't be able to get the highest score of 1600. Rodriguez said that's because students need to get a lot of questions wrong in the first half to end up with the easier second section.

"The mechanics itself does not preclude you from getting a certain score, but the student performance might," she said.

Students can take the test on a school-issued or personal device, but they can't take it at home and they can't take it on a cell phone. Rodriguez said the College Board will provide laptops for students who indicate at registration they don't have access to a device.

Students must download and take the test in the College Board's Bluebook app. It requires minimal bandwidth and can go offline without disrupting the test, Rodriguez said. If a device loses its internet connection as a student is submitting their test, their work should be saved and re-encrypted until the connection is restored.

Students should get their results in a few days, instead of waiting weeks.

Rodriguez said in addition to wanting a better testing experience for students, the College Board wants a test that's easier for schools to administer, now that two-thirds of students take the SAT during the school day rather than at a Saturday testing site.

In addition, teachers no longer need to store and protect boxes of paper tests or monitor calculator use. And the test takes up less of the school day.

The testing landscape is shifting

The SAT has evolved a number of times since its origins as an aptitude test closely related to IQ tests, said Derek Briggs, director of CADRE, the Center for Assessment, Design, Research and Evaluation at the University of Colorado's School of Education.

In the last decade, the College Board has pushed dual purposes for the SAT — as a predictor of college success and as a way for states to meet federal accountability requirements.

The ACT has also marketed itself that way. Now the SAT is notably shorter — and potentially less burdensome for schools to administer — than its chief rival.

"You can reframe all of these test changes in terms of this battle between these two companies," said Sheila Akbar, president and chief operating officer of Signet Education, which provides test prep and college advising.

Briggs said a shorter, adaptive test makes sense when entire state populations of students, including those who aren't thinking about going to college, are taking the test.

An option that includes easier questions might make for a better testing experience, Briggs said, and "perhaps students who didn't think they would go to college would think, 'Oh, maybe I can'" after taking it.

But Jessie said she's seen the other scenario as well, where a lower-than-expected score leaves a student feeling like they aren't cut out for college when the reality is they could be successful at a lot of institutions.

The adaptive aspect of the test concerns skeptics like Akbar and Jessie. They worry students who take longer to warm up or who are prone to small mistakes on easy questions won't get a chance to show they can answer harder questions correctly.

They're encouraging students who have to provide a test score to take the ACT, which is available in both paper and digital formats and hasn't changed much in recent years. They also feel more confident that ACT practice materials align with the test.

The College Board has said both versions of the SAT have a mix of easy, moderate, and hard questions, and there is significant overlap between the tests.

Students can take up to four practice SAT tests through the Bluebook app and get used to the interface before taking the test. Heather Waite, director of college admissions at Kaplan, a company that provides test prep services, said it's important that students practice with up-to-date materials, not previous year's prep books.

Waite said students have provided positive feedback about the shorter test.

College advisers expect more universities to bring back test score requirements, and a good score can boost an application at some test-optional schools.

"At Kaplan, our students are looking for an edge over other students, and submitting their scores is something that makes them more competitive," she said.

The brand-new SAT is nothing like the test you took. Here's how it's changing.

SAT General Info

Good preparation is key to feeling confident and scoring well on the SAT, and the good news is that you have access to tons of SAT study resources right on your laptop or smartphone!  There are lots of online SAT practice tests and quizzes available, but it can be tough figuring out which are the best to use.

Because of that, we’ve created a guide that compiles all the best online SAT practice materials, from official practice tests to targeted quizzes and websites designed to help you understand tricky concepts the SAT tests. And, best of all, all of these resources are free!  After reading this guide, you’ll know which online SAT practice materials to use and the best way to use them to get a top score, so let’s get started!

What to Look For in the Best Online SAT Practice Tests

There are lots of online SAT practice tests out there, and some of them can be very helpful for your SAT preparation.

What are the main benefits of SAT practice online?

  • Convenient to use: You can study any time you have your laptop or phone nearby!
  • Lots of resources available: The internet is endless.
  • Easy access to lots of official resources: Multiple official practice tests (which we discuss below) are available for free online.

However, online SAT tests aren’t always a perfect study tool. Below are some of their major drawbacks.

  • Quality can vary widely: Not every site is an amazing SAT resource. We discuss this throughout the guide so you know what to expect.
  • Some materials are out-of-date:  The SAT underwent significant revisions in 2016, and not all online practice resources have stayed current. (We make note of where this occurs in the resources we mention in this guide.)
  • Don't provide a completely realistic test-taking experience:  You’ll be taking the real SAT with paper and pencil, not on the computer, so there may be differences in how quickly you go through the questions.

So, how can you be sure you’re using high-quality online SAT practice tests that will actually help you raise your score? We’ve compiled a list of the best online SAT resources in this guide, and at the end we explain how to get the most out of them. For now, here’s a list of the key factors the best online SAT practice tests have.

  • High-quality practice questions: It's essential to have questions similar in content and wording to the real SAT so you know what to prepare for.
  • In-depth answer explanations: If you don't understand why you got a question wrong, it can be hard to learn from your mistakes.
  • Similar format to the real SAT: This helps you be better prepared for the SAT come test day.

Official Online SAT Practice Tests

The best SAT practice tests online are the official ones, since you can be sure they are an accurate representation of what the real SAT will be like.

Up-to-Date SAT Practice Tests (out of 1600)

There are currently seven official practice tests for the Redesigned SAT which, as of February 2016, is the current version of the SAT.  These are the absolute best tests to use when studying for the SAT since they match the format and content of the exam. They also include good answer explanations to help you understand why you answered certain questions incorrectly.

These should be your #1 resource to use when you need to take a full-length practice test. See the final section of this guide for tips on how to best use these tests.

Older Practice Tests

There are also older official SAT practice tests that you can use. These free online SAT practice tests have some differences in format and content compared to the current SAT, and since they are out-of-date in some areas, use these only if you know you’ll use all seven of the current official practice tests and still want more study materials.

These tests follow the old 2400 format of the SAT, with separate reading, math, and writing sections. This test had its last administration in January 2016.

It’s important to know the major changes between the Old and New SAT . Keep these points in mind:

  • The structure and timing of these SAT online practice tests are different than the current SAT. The current SAT has only four sections and doesn't skip around subjects like the old SAT did.
  • The Reading sections in the current and old SATS are quite similar, so in these old SAT tests, the passages and questions are all useful to practice on.
  • Writing in the current version of the SAT tests similar grammar skills, but it's tested in a very different passage-based format. Use these old SAT tests to practice your SAT grammar rules .
  • Math questions are similar in format, but the current SAT emphasizes algebra and de-emphasizes geometry. Use these old SAT tests as math practice, but focus on the skills that the current SAT tests (primarily algebra).

Khan academy.

In addition to full-length official practice tests, the College Board has also teamed up with Khan Academy to offer numerous official SAT practice questions and resources. Under its SAT Resources, Khan Academy offers practice quizzes, tests, individual questions, and videos that walk you step-by-step through how to answer different types of questions. You’ll need to set up a free account to access these resources, and your progress will be tracked over time.

Khan Academy can be a great resource to use if you’re struggling with understanding how to answer certain SAT questions or want to strengthen some skill areas before you take full-length practice tests. Their videos break concepts down to help you understand exactly how to solve different types of questions you may not know how to answer. You can learn more about these resources by checking out our guide on how to get the most out of Khan Academy’s SAT resources.

The Best Unofficial SAT Online Practice Tests

Unofficial SAT online practice tests can be a bit riskier to use since there’s no guarantee of quality like there is with official practice tests. Because of this, and because so many people have tried their hand at making practice SAT questions to entice visitors to their web page, the quality of unofficial resources can vary widely, from near-official level of quality to barely related to the real SAT.

To make things easier for you, we’ve sorted through the options and found the highest quality unofficial online SAT practice tests. Official materials should still be your main source of SAT practice, but these unofficial resources can be useful if you run out of official practice questions o r if you want to focus on a specific topic and not go through an entire practice SAT.

Ivy Global has a PDF of a complete practice SAT. It has the same format and question types as the current SAT, which makes it the best unofficial SAT practice online  since many other practice SATs aren’t as long and don't match the format of the current test. An answer key is also included, but there are no answer explanations.

This is a good resource to use after you’ve already completed at least a few official practice tests and are looking for another full-length SAT to take. By then you’ll have a good idea of what high-quality practice tests look like, and you’ll have a better chance of understanding the mistakes you made without needing answer explanations.

MajorTests.com

This site has 24 Math practice tests, 24 Critical Reading practice tests, 11 Writing practice tests, and a list of the 1000 most important vocab words to know. The quizzes are pretty short (about ten questions) and organized into specific categories. There are also good answer explanations for the questions you answered incorrectly. However, it hasn't been updated to reflect the 2016 SAT revisions , and because the quizzes are so short, you won't practice learning how you handle a long test (like the SAT).

Use this resource either when you don’t have enough time to take a full practice test or when you want to focus specifically on improving a certain skill, like problem-solving questions or reading comprehension. The short, targeted quizzes make it easier to focus on a specific topic.

CrackedSAT.net

This site includes numerous practice quizzes as well as free official practice tests of the old SAT that you can download as pdfs of both practice tests. The online quizzes (organized into categories to make finding the topic you want easier) are automatically graded. For the official practice test pdfs, answer keys are included, but there is no automatic grading, so you’ll need to grade these tests yourself. This is a decent resource if you’d like to take official SATs with pencil and paper (the way you will on test day) and if you’re looking for more short, targeted practice quizzes.

Varsity Tutors

This site has numerous SAT quizzes, organized into Math, Critical Reading, and Writing categories. However, Varsity Tutors isn’t as high-quality as the other resources listed because the practice questions sometimes aren’t that close to that you’ll see on the actual SAT and because the site hasn't been updated to reflect the 2016 changes to the SAT. I’d recommend only using this as a study tool if you’ve already gone through all the above resources and still want some more practice.

body_online.jpg

Other Online SAT Practice Resources

The sites below focus more on teaching you the material you need to know for the SAT and how to understand different concepts tested by the exam instead of only including practice questions. These are good resources if you’re trying to strengthen your skill areas before diving into a lot of practice problems.

The first two sites haven't been completely updated to reflect the new SAT changes from 2016, so not everything they mention is up-to-date. Keep that in mind if you use them, and we’ve included some notes on each of them to help you use them more effectively.

Erik the Red

If you need to brush up on your SAT math skills, this is a helpful site to use. This website lets you download pdfs with math facts, formulas, strategies, and math-related vocab. However, the math resources have remained unchanged since the old SAT, so they don't reflect the recent changes in format, question type, and skills tested. Despite this, the SAT tests many of the same concepts, particularly in algebra, so you can still get a lot from these sites.

If you use this site, focus mainly on the algebra resources, and less on geometry, since there will only be a few geometry questions on the SAT.

Erica Meltzer's The Critical Reader

This site is useful for preparing for the Reading, Writing, and essay sections of the SAT. She doesn't offer a ton of information yet for the current SAT, and some of her SAT Reading tips have been merged with ACT Reading since the tests have become so similar. Still, she has some useful posts and will most likely to continue to add to them over the year.

You can explore her blog for more tips on the verbal sections. The posts are engaging, but they leave it up to you to seek out examples and sample questions to try out her advice.

Tips for Using Online SAT Practice Materials

Now that you know where to find the best online SAT practice tests, follow the three tips below to get the most out of these resources.

Take Full-Length Practice Tests Under Realistic Conditions

You should aim to take full-length practice tests (especially the up-to-date official ones) in one sitting with accurate timing and realistic testing conditions . This means you’ll need to block out about four hours of time, so be sure to plan ahead for that.

Taking practice tests under realistic testing conditions means your practice scores will be more accurate, so you’ll have a better idea of how well you’re scoring, how much you’ve improved, and which areas you still need to work on.

Review Your Mistakes

After every practice test or quiz you take, you should go through the answers you got wrong and review them until you understand what you did wrong and how to get the correct answer.

This can take some time, but taking practice tests will only help you raise your score if you learn from your mistakes, so don’t skip this step! If you’re feeling burned out, take a break between finishing a test and reviewing your answers, but make sure to complete both steps.

Alternate Between Different Study Resources

There are lots of resources listed in this guide, from full-length practice SATs to short quizzes with only a few questions on a specific topic.  Be sure to alternate among the different materials and use the resource that works best for each individual study session.

For example, if you’re short on time or not on your A-game for studying, take a quiz or shorter practice test. You should reserve full-length practice tests (especially the official ones) for when you can set aside a few hours at a time and really concentrate on the test. Alternating between different resources can also keep your studying from becoming routine and monotonous and help keep your motivation up.

There are many SAT online practice materials, such as official practice tests, quizzes focused on specific topics, and sites to help you boost your knowledge of the skills the SAT tests. Using high-quality SAT practice tests online can help prepare you for the SAT and score higher on test day.

In order to get the most out of online SAT practice resources, you should follow these three guidelines:

  • Take full-length practice tests under realistic conditions
  • Review your mistakes
  • Alternate between different study resources

By getting in a lot of SAT online practice, you can be well-prepared and confident on test day!

Holly R. "I am absolutely overjoyed and cannot thank you enough for helping me!”

The SAT is now digital for the first time. One test expert says the new format makes the test easier.

  • A new digital SAT is now being offered for the first time.
  • The test is shorter, adaptive, and tests real-world skills.
  • One test expert says it's easier than past versions but clarifies it's still not an easy test.

Insider Today

In March, the first US high school students took the SAT exam — digitally.

This switch to digital comes as many top-tier colleges, such as Dartmouth, Yale, and Brown, are reversing their decision to be exam-optional — a trend that started during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a recent study suggests that test scores actually do predict academic performance and college success — better than high school grades.

Shaan Patel — the founder and CEO of Prep Expert, with more than two decades of experience with the popular college entrance exam — told Business Insider the test will be significantly different than in the past. It may even be easier.

The digital SAT has some content changes

For starters, the digital test will be shorter and adaptive. That means the test will get harder as the student progresses through it, but the level of difficulty will depend on how they performed on earlier questions.

According to Patel, the digital SAT is also more "student-friendly" than previous years.

For example, in the past, there was a section where students couldn't use the calculator, but on the digital SAT, Patel said a calculator could be used on all the questions.

"There's even a digital calculator built into the testing application, in case you don't have a graphing calculator," Patel said.

Related stories

In addition, the reading passages are a lot shorter in the new exam. The essay section has also been dissolved, and the grammar questions have now been integrated with the reading section.

"So it really tests your reading and writing together, which I think will be a welcome change for most people," Patel said.

Plus, there are new question types where students read notes and decipher what is most relevant.

"I think that's a super useful skill in the real world where you get a long email, and you have to sift through the important data," Patel said.

He added students no longer have to memorize difficult, obscure vocabulary words that were once required.

The digital SAT is easier

"The new question types are actually testing students in a much more real-world manner than the previous versions of the SAT," Patel said. "Overall, this test will be more relevant to real-world skills . So, I'm optimistic the changes will be good."

He said, in that regard, the SAT will be easier.

"But, I want to be careful about saying it's easy," Patel said. "I don't think it's easy because what's going to happen is with the adaptive testing structure…you are going to see harder questions as you go along, even though you're going to see fewer questions."

Prep for the SAT shouldn't change all that much

Patel recommended that all students download the College Board's Bluebook app , where they can take practice tests and familiarize themselves with the new adaptive feature.

"They must get used to not letting their brain become overused at the end of the test since that is when most students will encounter the hardest questions," Patel said.

But the most important piece of advice remained the same: prep early.

"I usually recommend getting started in 10th grade so that by the time the fall of 11th grade rolls around, you'll be ready to knock the PSAT out of the park," Patel said, "because the PSAT, especially this new digital PSAT , is more similar to the digital SAT than ever."
