The magic of new beginnings, and suddenly, you know: it's time for a change..

The Magic Of New Beginnings

Beginnings are beautiful. Whether it be the first page of a new chapter, the beginning of a workout/diet program, the start of a new semester or job, or even a decision to quit a bad habit. They can be different from what we are used to, and it can be hard to adapt, but there's just something so liberating, so freeing, and so beautiful about new beginnings.

You say goodbye to bad habits of your past, and hello to a healthier life. You move to a brand new city, full of endless possibilities and leave behind the one that made you feel small. You decide to meet new people who lift you up and motivate you, and ditch the ones who don't appreciate you enough. A new beginning can mean freeing yourself of what cages you in, of what makes you feel less whole.

Sometimes, though, a new beginning can also mean saying goodbye to a someone, a career, or a home that you don't want to leave. Sometimes we don't get to decide when our life is switching gears; all we can do is hold on tight for the ride.

We aren't always ready for change, and hardly do we ever want change, but our fear of the unknown will hold us back more than anything else in our lives. We have to let go of our need to control the future, we have to move out of our comfort zone. If we choose to stay, in a world, stuck, nothing will ever happen for us. But if we decide that the future holds much greater things ahead than anything we may leave behind, and we embrace that change - that's when we will truly notice the beauty of new beginnings.

If you're like me, you might be unclear whether a new beginning is what you're after, or just a pause from life. While you can't actually stop time, you can, and you should, pause what you're doing and take the time to rest your body, your mind, your soul. It can be exhausting going through life without ever stopping and taking a deep breath, and it can have detrimental effects on our bodies. Take the time once in a while to listen to what your body and mind are telling you. If you're tired, actually get some rest. If you're not liking the work you've been putting out, figure out why and fix it. And if after your adult-timeout, you're still yearning for something more, a new beginning could be what you need. And it's easy to start one, even if you're not sure what you want out of it.

The thing with new beginnings is that they are starting and ending all the time. They aren't always black and white, so we don't always notice them, but changes happen in our relationships all the time. Because of these little changes, we are able to make the big changes. The changes that actually begin to affect our lives. We begin to notice what really makes us happy, what makes us actually feel important, and we want more of it.

I've also learned that a new beginning does not happen overnight. Whether we want to make the change right now in this exact moment or not, we won't see a major change in our lives the next time we wake up, that's just not realistic. But if we are determined, and we keep pushing for the change we wish to see, it will happen.

And that new beginning we were so scared of will now be a comforting friend we can always turn to when we're in need.

Grateful beyond words: a letter to my inspiration, i have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

You inspire me to be the best version of myself. I look up to you. I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion that you exemplify in everyday life. You may be stubborn at points but when you really need help you let others in, which shows strength in itself. I have never been more proud to know someone and to call someone my role model. You have taught me so many things and I want to thank you. Thank you for inspiring me in life. Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Navigating the Talking Stage: 21 Essential Questions to Ask for Connection

It's mandatory to have these conversations..

Whether you met your new love interest online , through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

1. What do you do for a living?

What someone does for a living can tell a lot about who they are and what they're interested in! Their career reveals a lot more about them than just where they spend their time to make some money.

2. What's your favorite color?

OK, I get it, this seems like something you would ask a Kindergarten class, but I feel like it's always good to know someone's favorite color . You could always send them that Snapchat featuring you in that cute shirt you have that just so happens to be in their favorite color!

3. Do you have any siblings?

This one is actually super important because it's totally true that people grow up with different roles and responsibilities based on where they fall in the order. You can tell a lot about someone just based on this seemingly simple question.

4. What's your favorite television show?

OK, maybe this isn't a super important question, but you have to know ASAP if you can quote Michael Scott or not. If not, he probably isn't the one. Sorry, girl.

5. When is your birthday?

You can then proceed to do the thing that every girl does without admitting it and see how compatible your zodiacs are.

6. What's your biggest goal in life?

If you're like me, you have big goals that you want to reach someday, and you want a man behind you who also has big goals and understands what it's like to chase after a dream. If his biggest goal is to see how quickly he can binge-watch " Grey's Anatomy " on Netflix , you may want to move on.

7. If you had three wishes granted to you by a genie, what would they be?

This is a go-to for an insight into their personality. Based on how they answer, you can tell if they're goofy, serious, or somewhere in between.

8. What's your favorite childhood memory?

For some, this may be a hard question if it involves a family member or friend who has since passed away . For others, it may revolve around a tradition that no longer happens. The answers to this question are almost endless!

9. If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

We all have parts of our lives and stories that we wish we could change. It's human nature to make mistakes. This question is a little bit more personal but can really build up the trust level.

10. Are you a cat or a dog person?

I mean, duh! If you're a dog person, and he is a cat person, it's not going to work out.

11. Do you believe in a religion or any sort of spiritual power?

Personally, I am a Christian, and as a result, I want to be with someone who shares those same values. I know some people will argue that this question is too much in the talking stage , but why go beyond the talking stage if your personal values will never line up?

12. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Even homebodies have a must visit place on their bucket list !

13. What is your ideal date night?

Hey, if you're going to go for it... go for it!

14. Who was/is your celebrity crush?

For me, it was hands-down Nick Jonas . This is always a fun question to ask!

15. What's a good way to cheer you up if you're having a bad day?

Let's be real, if you put a label on it, you're not going to see your significant other at their best 24/7.

16. Do you have any tattoos?

This can lead to some really good conversations, especially if they have a tattoo that has a lot of meaning to them!

17. Can you describe yourself in three words?

It's always interesting to see if how the person you're talking to views their personal traits lines ups with the vibes you're getting.

18. What makes you the most nervous in life?

This question can go multiple different directions, and it could also be a launching pad for other conversations.

19. What's the best gift you have ever received?

Admittedly, I have asked this question to friends as well, but it's neat to see what people value.

20. What do you do to relax/have fun?

Work hard, play hard, right?

21. What are your priorities at this phase of your life?

This is always interesting because no matter how compatible your personalities may be, if one of you wants to be serious and the other is looking for something casual, it's just not going to work.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in challah bread or easter bread.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

A few weeks ago, I was given a loaf of bread called Challah (pronounced like holla), and upon my first bite, I realized it tasted just like Easter Bread. It was so delicious that I just had to make some of my own, which I did.

The recipe is as follows:

Ingredients

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 1 cup lukewarm water 4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup white granulated sugar 2 tsp salt 2 large eggs 1 large egg yolk (reserve the white for the egg wash) 1/4 cup neutral-flavored vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Combine yeast and a pinch of sugar in small bowl with the water and stir until you see a frothy layer across the top.
  • Whisk together 4 cups of the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Make a well in the center of the flour and add in eggs, egg yolk, and oil. Whisk these together to form a slurry, pulling in a little flour from the sides of the bowl.
  • Pour the yeast mixture over the egg slurry and mix until difficult to move.
  • Turn out the dough onto a floured work surface and knead by hand for about 10 minutes. If the dough seems very sticky, add flour a teaspoon at a time until it feels tacky, but no longer like bubblegum. The dough has finished kneading when it is soft, smooth, and holds a ball-shape.
  • Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and place somewhere warm. Let the dough rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  • Separate the dough into four pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a long rope roughly 1-inch thick and 16 inches long.
  • Gather the ropes and squeeze them together at the very top. Braid the pieces in the pattern of over, under, and over again. Pinch the pieces together again at the bottom.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment and lift the loaf on top. Sprinkle the loaf with a little flour and drape it with a clean dishcloth. Place the pan somewhere warm and away from drafts and let it rise until puffed and pillowy, about an hour.
  • Heat the oven to 350°F. Whisk the reserved egg white with a tablespoon of water and brush it all over the challah. Be sure to get in the cracks and down the sides of the loaf.
  • Slide the challah on its baking sheet into the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through cooking. The challah is done when it is deeply browned.

I kept wondering how these two breads could be so similar in taste. So I decided to look up a recipe for Easter Bread to make a comparison. The two are almost exactly the same! These recipes are similar because they come from religious backgrounds. The Jewish Challah bread is based on kosher dietary laws. The Christian Easter Bread comes from the Jewish tradition but was modified over time because they did not follow kosher dietary laws.

A recipe for Easter bread is as follows:

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 2/3 cup milk 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup white granulated sugar 2 tbs butter 2 large eggs 2 tbs melted butter 1 tsp salt

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, salt, and yeast; stir well. Combine milk and butter in a small saucepan; heat until milk is warm and butter is softened but not melted.
  • Gradually add the milk and butter to the flour mixture; stirring constantly. Add two eggs and 1/2 cup flour; beat well. Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
  • Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
  • Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal size rounds; cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll each round into a long roll about 36 inches long and 1 1/2 inches thick. Using the two long pieces of dough, form a loosely braided ring, leaving spaces for the five colored eggs. Seal the ends of the ring together and use your fingers to slide the eggs between the braids of dough.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place loaf on a buttered baking sheet and cover loosely with a damp towel. Place loaf in a warm place and let rise until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes. Brush risen loaf with melted butter.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 30 minutes.

Both of these recipes are really easy to make. While you might need to have a day set aside for this activity, you can do things while the dough is rising or in the oven. After only a few hours, you have a delicious loaf of bread that you made from scratch, so the time and effort is really worth it!

Unlocking Lake People's Secrets: 15 Must-Knows!

There's no other place you'd rather be in the summer..

The people that spend their summers at the lake are a unique group of people.

Whether you grew up going to the lake , have only recently started going, or have only been once or twice, you know it takes a certain kind of person to be a lake person. To the long-time lake people, the lake holds a special place in your heart , no matter how dirty the water may look.

Every year when summer rolls back around, you can't wait to fire up the boat and get back out there. Here is a list of things you can probably identify with as a fellow lake-goer.

A bad day at the lake is still better than a good day not at the lake.

It's your place of escape, where you can leave everything else behind and just enjoy the beautiful summer day. No matter what kind of week you had, being able to come and relax without having to worry about anything else is the best therapy there is. After all, there's nothing better than a day of hanging out in the hot sun, telling old funny stories and listening to your favorite music.

You know the best beaches and coves to go to.

Whether you want to just hang out and float or go walk around on a beach, you know the best spots. These often have to be based on the people you're with, given that some "party coves" can get a little too crazy for little kids on board. I still have vivid memories from when I was six that scared me when I saw the things drunk girls would do for beads.

You have no patience for the guy who can't back his trailer into the water right.

When there's a long line of trucks waiting to dump their boats in the water, there's always that one clueless guy who can't get it right, and takes 5 attempts and holds up the line. No one likes that guy. One time my dad got so fed up with a guy who was taking too long that he actually got out of the car and asked this guy if he could just do it for him. So he got into the guy's car, threw it in reverse, and got it backed in on the first try. True story.

Doing the friendly wave to every boat you pass.

Similar to the "jeep wave," almost everyone waves to other boats passing by. It's just what you do, and is seen as a normal thing by everyone.

The cooler is always packed, mostly with beer.

Alcohol seems to be a big part of the lake experience, but other drinks are squeezed into the room remaining in the cooler for the kids, not to mention the wide assortment of chips and other foods in the snack bag.

Giving the idiot who goes 30 in a "No Wake Zone" a piece of your mind.

There's nothing worse than floating in the water, all settled in and minding your business, when some idiot barrels through. Now your anchor is loose, and you're left jostled by the waves when it was nice and perfectly still before. This annoyance is typically answered by someone yelling some choice words to them that are probably accompanied by a middle finger in the air.

You have no problem with peeing in the water.

It's the lake, and some social expectations are a little different here, if not lowered quite a bit. When you have to go, you just go, and it's no big deal to anyone because they do it too.

You know the frustration of getting your anchor stuck.

The number of anchors you go through as a boat owner is likely a number that can be counted on two hands. Every once in a while, it gets stuck on something on the bottom of the lake, and the only way to fix the problem is to cut the rope, and you have to replace it.

Watching in awe at the bigger, better boats that pass by.

If you're the typical lake-goer, you likely might have an average-sized boat that you're perfectly happy with. However, that doesn't mean you don't stop and stare at the fast boats that loudly speed by, or at the obnoxiously huge yachts that pass.

Knowing any swimsuit that you own with white in it is best left for the pool or the ocean.

You've learned this the hard way, coming back from a day in the water and seeing the flowers on your bathing suit that were once white, are now a nice brownish hue.

The momentary fear for your life as you get launched from the tube.

If the driver knows how to give you a good ride, or just wants to specifically throw you off, you know you're done when you're speeding up and heading straight for a big wave. Suddenly you're airborne, knowing you're about to completely wipe out, and you eat pure wake. Then you get back on and do it all again.

You're able to go to the restaurants by the water wearing minimal clothing.

One of the many nice things about the life at the lake is that everybody cares about everything a little less. Rolling up to the place wearing only your swimsuit, a cover-up, and flip flops, you fit right in. After a long day when you're sunburned, a little buzzed, and hungry, you're served without any hesitation.

Having unexpected problems with your boat.

Every once in a while you're hit with technical difficulties, no matter what type of watercraft you have. This is one of the most annoying setbacks when you're looking forward to just having a carefree day on the water, but it's bound to happen. This is just one of the joys that come along with being a boat owner.

Having a name for your boat unique to you and your life.

One of the many interesting things that make up the lake culture is the fact that many people name their boats. They can range from basic to funny, but they are unique to each and every owner, and often have interesting and clever meanings behind them.

There's no better place you'd rather be in the summer.

Summer is your all-time favorite season, mostly because it's spent at the lake. Whether you're floating in the cool water under the sun, or taking a boat ride as the sun sets, you don't have a care in the world at that moment . The people that don't understand have probably never experienced it, but it's what keeps you coming back every year.

Embarking on a new path in life can be both exciting and daunting. However, with proper planning and goal setting, you can navigate this new beginning with confidence. Setting clear and achievable goals is vital for staying focused and motivated along the way. Here are a few key steps to help you effectively plan your new chapter:

  • Reflect on your priorities: Take the time to identify what truly matters to you in this new phase of your life. Consider your values, passions, and aspirations. By aligning your goals with your core beliefs, you can create a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
  • Set SMART goals: Rather than vague objectives, formulate Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) goals. Break them down into smaller, manageable steps to make them less overwhelming. This approach will enable you to track your progress and celebrate each milestone along the way.

Change is an inevitable part of life, and it can be both exciting and challenging. Embracing change with an open mind allows us to tap into our inner creativity, unlocking endless possibilities and personal growth. By adapting to change, we not only expand our perspective but also develop valuable skills that can shape our future success.

Here are a few key ways to embrace change and unleash your inner creativity:

  • Embrace curiosity: Cultivate a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around you. Ask questions, explore new ideas, and challenge your assumptions. Curiosity fuels creativity.
  • Embrace discomfort: Stepping outside of your comfort zone is often necessary for personal growth. Embrace discomfort as a sign of progress and growth, knowing that some of the best ideas are born in times of uncertainty.
  • Embrace failure: Fear of failure can prevent us from taking risks and trying new things. Shift your perspective and see failure as a learning opportunity. Embrace it, learn from it, and use it to fuel your next creative endeavor.
  • Embrace collaboration: Seek out diverse perspectives and collaborate with others. Surrounding yourself with people who think differently can ignite your creativity and inspire fresh ideas .

Remember, change is not an obstacle but a catalyst for growth and innovation. By embracing change and tapping into your inner creativity, you can navigate life’s ever-evolving landscape with confidence and resilience.

Exploring Different Writing Styles: Finding Your Voice

When it comes to writing, finding your unique voice is essential. It allows you to express your thoughts and ideas in a way that is authentic and captivating. Exploring different writing styles is a fantastic way to discover which approach resonates with you the most. Here are some tips to help you on this exciting journey:

  • Read, read, read: Dive into various genres and authors to expose yourself to a wide range of writing styles. Pay attention to their use of language, tone, and structure, and take note of what resonates with you.
  • Experiment: Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try different writing styles. Play with different tones, narrative techniques, and sentence structures. This experimentation will not only help you find your voice but also hone your writing skills.
  • Reflect on your interests and experiences: Your unique voice often stems from your personal experiences and passions. Reflecting on your own life can provide you with the inspiration and content to create something truly authentic.

Finding your writing voice is a process that takes time and practice. Embrace the journey and don’t be discouraged if it takes a while. Remember that your writing style is an expression of who you are, so stay true to yourself and let your voice shine through.

Crafting Compelling Characters: Bringing Life to Your Story

Creating captivating characters is the key to immersing readers in your story and making them care deeply about its outcome. By crafting individuals who are relatable, multi-dimensional, and unique, you can bring your narrative to life and leave a lasting impact on your audience. Here are some tips to help you unleash the power of intriguing characters:

  • Showcase Flaws and Vulnerabilities: Perfect characters may appear unattainable, which can alienate readers. Instead, develop flaws and vulnerabilities that make your characters relatable, allowing readers to connect with their struggles and cheer for their triumphs.
  • Create Depth through Backstories: Develop rich backstories for your characters that explore their past experiences, motivations, and goals. A well-crafted backstory adds depth, providing insight into their actions and making them feel like real people.
  • Embrace Unique Personalities: Give each character their own distinct personality traits, quirks, and mannerisms. Whether it’s a nervous twitch or a confident swagger, these small details add authenticity and make your characters stand out.

With these strategies, you can transform your characters from mere words on a page to unforgettable individuals that will resonate with your readers. Remember, compelling characters hold the power to breathe life into your story, making it an engaging and memorable experience for all who embark on the journey you’ve created.

Creating Captivating Settings: Transporting Readers to a New World

Setting the Stage for Imagination

When crafting a captivating story, transport your readers to a new world through the power of vivid and enticing settings. A well-developed setting not only provides a backdrop for your characters but also serves as a compelling character itself. By immersing your readers in a richly described environment, you allow them to detach from their current realities and embark on a thrilling journey through their imaginations.

  • Use sensory details: Engage your readers’ senses by describing the scenery, smells, sounds, and even tastes of your setting. These vivid sensory descriptions will evoke emotions and create a more immersive experience.
  • Create a unique atmosphere: The ambiance of your setting should reflect the tone of your story. Whether it’s an eerie Gothic mansion or a cozy coffee shop , make sure the atmosphere serves to captivate your readers and enhance the overall mood.
  • Introduce intriguing landmarks: Spark curiosity by incorporating interesting landmarks into your setting. Unusual buildings, mystical monuments, or hidden treasures can act as focal points that generate excitement and add depth to your fictional world.

Threading Reality with Fantasy

To fully transport readers to a new world, seamlessly weave elements of fantasy into the fabric of reality. By blending familiar details with fantastical elements, you create a setting that feels believable yet extraordinary, enticing readers to explore every nook and cranny of your imagined realm.

  • Create believable rules: Even in a fictional world, consistency is key. Establish rules for how the setting operates, such as the behavior of magical creatures or the limits of supernatural powers. Consistency grounds your world in plausibility and helps readers become emotionally invested.
  • Embrace cultural diversity: Just like our own world, your fictional setting should be filled with diverse cultures, traditions, and beliefs. This adds depth and realism, making your readers feel like they’ve truly stepped into an expansive and vibrant world.
  • Uncover hidden secrets: Treat your setting as a character with hidden depths. Sprinkle tantalizing clues and secrets throughout the environment, challenging readers to uncover its mysteries. Whether it’s a forgotten door in a labyrinthine castle or a whispered rumor of buried treasure, these secrets will keep readers engaged and hungry for more.

Mastering the Art of Plot Development: Unveiling a Riveting Narrative Journey

Creating a compelling and well-crafted plot is the cornerstone of any captivating story. Whether you’re an aspiring author or a seasoned writer looking to enhance your storytelling skills, mastering the art of plot development is essential. In this section, we will explore the key elements and techniques that go into unraveling a riveting narrative journey that will leave your readers on the edge of their seats.

First and foremost, a successful plot requires a strong foundation. Building a solid framework ensures that your story flows seamlessly and engages readers from beginning to end. Start by outlining the main plot points in a linear fashion, from exposition to climax and resolution. This will allow you to map out the overarching structure and identify pivotal moments that drive the narrative forward. To add depth and complexity, consider incorporating subplots that intertwine with the main storyline, providing additional layers of intrigue. By carefully weaving these subplots, you can create a multifaceted world that keeps readers guessing and invested in the outcome.

Furthermore, the protagonist’s journey lies at the heart of an enthralling plot. It is crucial to develop a compelling protagonist with relatable flaws and aspirations. As the main driving force behind the narrative, their growth and transformation should be interwoven into the plot’s progression. Through a series of rising conflicts and challenges, the protagonist can overcome obstacles and evolve, captivating readers along the way. Don’t forget to include well-developed supporting characters who complement the protagonist and contribute to the overall narrative arc.

  • Utilize suspense and foreshadowing to keep readers eagerly turning the pages.
  • Balance the pacing by strategically alternating between moments of tension and calmness.
  • Create unexpected plot twists that challenge readers’ expectations.
  • Ensure there is a satisfying resolution that ties up loose ends and leaves a lasting impact.

In conclusion, mastering the art of plot development is about constructing a seamless and captivating narrative that takes readers on a thrilling journey. By establishing a strong foundation, incorporating compelling subplots, and focusing on the protagonist’s growth, you will create a plot that keeps readers hooked until the very last page. Remember, it is through the artful navigation of conflicts, suspenseful elements, and unexpected twists that your story will come alive, leaving a lasting impression on eager readers.

“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” ~Carl Bard

Birthdays. They’re supposed to be a joyous celebration, right?

That one special day each year when we throw a party and reflect on the day our amazing journey began.

The starting point.

I’ve had quite a colorful journey and certainly enjoyed many wonderful birthdays in my life.

Turning 50 this past year wasn’t one of them. Here’s why.

When we’re little every birthday marks a major accomplishment. We learn to walk. Then we learn to talk. Then we go to school and learn our ABCs.

Everything is brand new.

When we graduate high school they tell us we have our whole lives in front of us. Whether we’re off to college, exploring the world, or entering the work force, we begin a whole new chapter. Independence.

A starting point.

You can just picture that open highway stretched out to infinity before you, beckoning to a future somewhere out on that horizon that calls you to adventure . All that you will become lies out there.

In my twenties, I was a freewheeling single young man touring the world with rock stars. How bad can that be, right?

Turning 30 was awesome too! I was living in sunny Southern California, playing music, and making records in recording studios. Life was good.

Even 40 was great. I had moved back to New York to play in my own band and got married. Our life together had just begun. Then came children. I became Dad.

You’re supposed to have accomplished your greatest life’s work by now, right? Achieved all your major goals. Changed the world.

But what if you’re still working on that? What if you’re just now starting to figure out what you’re really supposed to be doing with your life?

You can say many things about turning 50, but one thing you can’t say with a straight face is that you still have your whole life in front of you.

At this point in the journey, life has shown you many of its cards. Not all, mind you, but you’ve got a pretty good grasp on how the world turns. If there are still any surprises, they have mostly to do with learning to change the way you see things.

But something else happened that was very difficult to escape. Much as I hated to admit it, I found that I was looking around and comparing myself to my peers.

This person has kids entering college and I’m looking at two young children and the reality that I’ll be close to 70 by the time the youngest is out of school.

That one is retired at 50 and buying their second Ferrari while retirement doesn’t seem to be in the cards any time soon for me.

When you view life this way, there’s always going to be someone who you feel is ahead of you by your own estimate. And you’ll never catch up to them. So that leaves you feeling behind in some imaginary race that can’t be won.

And when the game is comparing yourself to others , you will never have enough. Ever.

Unknowingly, you build this imaginary scale to see how you measure up against your peers. Let’s call it the Success/Happiness curve. Yet, no matter where you believe you fall on that curve, the moment you mark your place is to engage in a losing battle.

You believe that if you can just obtain that (figure of money in the bank, job title, certain car) that you will have arrived at your destination and will find happiness there.

But you won’t. Because it’s not out there.

Not in any material things you can obtain. Whatever it is will begin to lose its luster the moment you acquire it. Then you’ll have to look for something new to replace it and give you another fix. And the cycle never ends.

So how do you break out of this destructive cycle?

Well first, I needed to learn how to let go of a lot of my preconceived notions about where I thought I would be by the time I reached 50.

Ultimately, I found the answer in meditation.

Through meditation you learn how to become present .

Most of us never learn to appreciate where we are at this very moment because we’re so focused on what happened (or didn’t happen) in a past that no longer exists and worried about a future that hasn’t happened yet.

Meditation taught me that to compare ourselves to others is the root of human suffering, or samsara. Because it creates a separation between ourselves and someone else. A duality. A them and an us.

Armed with this new perspective, the next thing I did was to review my life and my experiences to figure out what was working and what was not. This brought me face to face with a rather harsh reality.

As much as I liken myself to be a caring person, I realized that I’d spent most of my career focused on my own self-interests.

Sure I spent a lot of time making music, which is something very personal that you put out into the universe in the hopes that you will connect with an audience and make them feel something.

But it turns out the giving was conditional.

It was like, “Enjoy this music and help support my dream. Please vote for me in this contest and buy that CD and help me or my band out.” The focus was all wrong.

And that’s when I realized what had been gnawing away at me all these years. It was a yearning to connect with an audience in a meaningful way that focuses on helping them . On seeing the world through their eyes.

And so at age 50, I am only now seeing the light.

Only after allowing the hidden writer within to finally emerge did I realize that I have been telling stories my whole life.

With that came the realization that each of us has a unique story we’re supposed to tell. That’s why we’re here. And I’m supposed to help people to tell theirs.

The epiphany was that as a music producer and a songwriter, I had been doing this already for many years helping artists to realize their vision.

Suddenly everything felt different. Like I had steered the boat back on course. Like a new chapter.

Suddenly that really successful person I follow who I want to emulate, the one who seems so far ahead in their journey, finally, it all gets put into perspective.

We think they just arrived where they are today.

We never got to see all the years they spent toiling away in obscurity. Experimenting, missing the mark, failing. Trying to figure out the very things we’re looking to figure out now.

Until they honed their craft to excellence and were finally rewarded by the world for their efforts.

We never stop and give ourselves a break for simply being on the path. It may be a path of discovery. It may be a path toward a specific destination. Or it may be a path away from our old ways.

But you’re walking the path. Celebrate that.

The law says that if you take steps in the direction of your destination every day and keep walking, no matter how slow or how far you must travel, you must one day arrive there.

In Tibet they have a tradition. After a long and arduous journey, no matter how difficult, they seek a high vantage point and look back to see just how far they have come.

Age is irrelevant. Wherever you are in your journey is a starting point. Whoever or whatever it is you’re chasing, slow down.

Realize there is no race.

Whether you’re 20 or 50 or 80, if you never stop seeking then you’ll never cease to be amazed by what you might find.

And if every point is a starting point then every day can be your birthday!

How will you celebrate today?

Renewed by God: Embracing New Beginnings

Beloved congregation, welcome to this gathering as we stand together on the threshold of a new year. It is with immense gratitude that we come together today, united in faith and hope, as we embark on this spiritual renewal and transformation journey.

The New Year holds a special significance for many of us. It is a time when we pause, reflect, and envision the possibilities that lie ahead. It is a season of fresh starts, renewed resolutions, and a deep longing for personal growth and positive change. As we bid farewell to the past and embrace the unknown future, we find ourselves drawn to the prospect of new beginnings.

In our quest for renewal, let us turn our attention to the inspired words of the prophet Isaiah. In Isaiah 43:16-21, we discover a profound source of inspiration and encouragement, reminding us of God’s transformative power in our lives. These verses speak of the Lord’s ability to make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. They assure us that God is constantly working, bringing forth newness and vitality even in our most barren and desolate seasons.

Remembering God’s Past Faithfulness

As we begin a new year, we need to take a moment to reflect on the faithfulness of our God. In Isaiah 43:16-17, we find a powerful reminder of God’s past acts of deliverance and His ability to bring about new beginnings. By diving into the context of this passage, we will discover how the Israelites’ past experiences of deliverance can inspire and encourage us in our present circumstances.

In this passage, God addresses the Israelites, reminding them of His miraculous deliverance from the hands of the Egyptians. He parted the Red Sea, allowing His people to cross on dry ground, then closed the waters, drowning Pharaoh’s pursuing army. Through this historical event, God demonstrated His sovereignty and power, revealing Himself as the God who can make a way where there seems to be no way.

Just as God delivered the Israelites from an impossible situation, He can do the same for us. We may face challenges, uncertainties, or personal struggles as we enter the New Year. However, by remembering God’s past faithfulness, we can draw strength, hope, and confidence in His ability to provide new beginnings.

Embracing God’s Promise of Renewal

Moving on to the following two verses (18-19) in our passage, we find a powerful message from God, urging His people to let go of the past and embrace the new thing He is doing. This passage is filled with hope and encouragement, reminding us of the transformative power of God in our lives.

As we delve into the significance of letting go of the past, we realize that holding onto past mistakes, hurts, and failures can hinder our growth and prevent us from experiencing the fullness of God’s renewal. The Lord calls us to release the burdens of our past and place our trust in Him. Through this act of surrender, we open ourselves to the transformative work of God in our lives.

The prophet Isaiah uses vivid imagery to convey God’s message of renewal. He urges us to refrain from dwelling on the past, indicating that our focus should not be fixed on what has already happened. Instead, we are called to direct our attention to the future and the new thing God is doing. This imagery encourages us to trust God’s sovereignty and ability to bring about newness.

God’s renewal is not limited to one aspect of our lives. He can bring transformation to our personal lives, restoring us from brokenness and guiding us toward wholeness. He can mend fractured relationships, heal wounds, and reconcile estranged hearts. Additionally, God’s renewal brings forth opportunities for growth and development. He opens doors and presents new possibilities that allow us to reach our full potential in Him.

Therefore, as we embrace God’s promise of renewal, we must approach it with open hearts and a willingness to let go of the past. Not only are we called to anticipate these new beginnings, but we are called to respond to them as well.

Responding in Faith and Expectation

In the final verses of our passage (20-21), we see God’s intention to provide for His people’s needs and to make them witnesses to His greatness. He promises to do something extraordinary—water in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. These images of provision in the most barren places remind us that our circumstances do not limit God’s power and provision. He can bring life and sustenance where there seems to be none.

But there is a deeper purpose behind God’s provision. It is not just for our benefit; it is meant to equip us to be witnesses of His glory and goodness in the world. As we embrace new beginnings and experience personal renewal, we are called to step out in faith and be testimonies of God’s faithfulness. Our lives should reflect His transformative power and the hope that comes from a relationship with Him.

Being a witness means more than simply telling others about God. It involves embodying His love, grace, and truth daily. Our words, actions, and attitudes should reflect the character of Christ. We can impact those around us by demonstrating the life-changing power of God’s presence in our lives.

So, as we embark on this journey of new beginnings, let us receive God’s provision for ourselves and be intentional about sharing it with others. We are called to witness our God to this needy world.

Today, we have explored the theme of renewal in our lives. We have discovered that embracing new beginnings is not merely a decision we make but an invitation extended to us by our loving Creator. In our journey of faith, we often find ourselves needing renewal—whether it be in our relationships, habits, or spiritual walk. The good news is that God stands ready to renew us, to breathe new life into our weary souls.

Firstly, we acknowledged that embracing new beginnings requires letting go of the past and surrendering our burdens to God. We cannot move forward if regrets, guilt, or unforgiveness weigh us down. Secondly, we understood that renewal comes through seeking God’s wisdom and guidance. As we align our lives with His Word, He transforms our thinking, aligning it with His perfect will. Lastly, we recognized that renewal is an ongoing process that requires patience, perseverance, and the cultivation of a deep and abiding relationship with God.

As we conclude, let us bow our heads and invite the presence of our Heavenly Father. Dear God, thank you for the timeless truth that you are the God of new beginnings. We stand in awe of your transformative power and grace. As we embark on this new year, we humbly ask for your guidance and presence. Renew us, O Lord, in body, mind, and spirit. Help us to let go of the past and embrace the future with hope and faith. Grant us the strength and wisdom to walk in your ways, to seek your will above all else. May this year be a season of abundant blessings, growth, and deepening intimacy with you. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

How To Start An Essay (With 20 Great Examples)

Author: Rafal Reyzer

Starting your essay is probably the most difficult thing to do in the whole writing process.

Facing a blank page and unsure how to start your essay? Crafting a compelling essay isn’t innate for everyone. While it’s about presenting clear ideas, even top students can struggle. For many, meeting deadlines or ensuring quality becomes daunting, leading them to consult professionals like do my essay cheap . These experts whip up top-tier essays swiftly. A standout essay can elevate your academic status, with the introduction being the pivotal hook. Many opt to hire essay writers for that impeccable start. But crafting an engaging intro is doable. Want to captivate your readers immediately? Or impress academic panels? If the task still feels daunting, there’s always the option to buy assignments online for guaranteed quality. But let’s explore ways to start an essay on your own.

How to start your essay? – The most straightforward advice

In his famous book  “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft” , Stephen King said: “The scariest moment is always just before you start.” So the best thing to do is to start writing as soon as you can. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just sit down and write anything, because the Muse comes to those who are brave enough to start. Maybe you’ll throw half of it away, but at least you’ll have something to hang on to.

How to begin your essay? – The lengthier and more appropriate advice

The aim of an academic essay is usually to persuade readers to change their minds about something. It can also be a descriptive, expository, argumentative, or narrative essay .

But regardless of the  format of the essay , the introduction should still have these basic ingredients:

  • Introduce the topic – let the reader know what is it about straight away.
  • Put the topic in an appropriate context. Frame it, and provide some background information.
  • Narrow down the focus. If your essay is too broad, you’ll lose the interest of the reader and fail to address the important issue.
  • Answer an important question or make a strong statement which you’ll defend throughout the essay.
  • Orientate the reader. In the beginning, you need to answer questions like who, what, when, and how. Remember that the reader probably doesn’t know all the facts that you do.
  • Briefly mention the main ideas you are going to discuss in the essay.

How long should an essay introduction be?

It all depends on the overall length of your essay. If it’s a standard, five-paragraph  college essay , the introduction should only take one paragraph or 60-80 words. But if you’re writing something longer, for example, a five-page interpretation of a literary work, the introduction could take two to three paragraphs or 120-150 words. You can measure the length using a simple word counter but don’t obsess too much about the number. The crucial thing is to say what you need to say and impact the reader.

The aim of the introductory paragraph

The first paragraph is always tricky because it serves a double purpose. It has to state what the essay will be about, but it needs to hook the readers and motivate them to read on. That’s why you need a perfect balance between clinical precision and artistic flair.

If you truly want to learn how to begin an essay, there are three best ways to do it:

  • Read as many  great essays as possible
  • Write as many great essays as possible
  • Check examples of great essay introductory paragraphs (that’s what you can see below)

20 Great examples and tips on how to start an essay:

1. describe a setting and start with an emotional punch.

“I’ve been to Australia twice so far, but according to my father, I’ve never actually seen it. He made this observation at the home of my cousin Joan, whom he and I visited just before Christmas last year, and it came on the heels of an equally aggressive comment.” – David Sedaris, Laugh, Kookaburra

2. Start with a deeply personal story from your childhood

“One Sunday morning when I was a boy, my father came out of his office and handed me a poem. It was about a honeybee counseling a flea to flee a doggy and see the sea. The barbiturates my father took to regulate his emotions made him insomniac, and I understood that he’d been awake most of the night, laboring over these lines, listing all the words he could think of ending in a long “e.” – Charles D’Ambrosio – Documents

3. Create a mysterious atmosphere

“Moths that fly by day are not properly to be called moths; they do not excite that pleasant sense of dark autumn nights and ivy-blossom which the commonest yellow-underwing asleep in the shadow of the curtain never fails to rouse in us.” – Virginia Woolf – Death of the Moth

4. Throw the reader straight into the middle of the events

“Earlier this summer I was walking down West End Avenue in Manhattan and remembered, with a sadness that nearly knocked me off my feet, just why I came to New York seven years ago and just why I am now about to leave.” – Meghan Daum – My Misspent Youth

5. Start with universal questions of life and death

“I know it is coming, and I do not fear it, because I believe there is nothing on the other side of death to fear. I hope to be spared as much pain as possible on the approach path. I was perfectly content before I was born, and I think of death as the same state.” – Roger Ebert – Go Gentle Into That Good Night

6. Start with a question and then answer it

“What is the charm of necklaces? Why would anyone put something extra around their neck and then invest it with special significance? A necklace doesn’t afford warmth in cold weather, like a scarf, or protection in combat, like chain mail; it only decorates. We might say, it borrows meaning from what it surrounds and sets off, the head with its supremely important material contents, and the face, that register of the soul.” – Emily R. Grosholz – On Necklaces

7. Start with irony

“In Moulmein, in Lower Burma, I was hated by large numbers of people – the only time in my life that I have been important enough for this to happen to me.” – George Orwell – Shooting an Elephant

8. Begin by creating great expectations of what’s to come (use the introduction as bait)

“At a dinner party that will forever be green in the memory of those who attended it, somebody was complaining not just about the epic badness of the novels of Robert Ludlum but also about the badness of their titles. (You know the sort of pretentiousness: The Bourne Supremacy, The Aquitaine Progression, The Ludlum Impersonation, and so forth.) Then it happily occurred to another guest to wonder aloud what a Shakespeare play might be called if named in the Ludlum manner.” – Christopher Hitchens – Assassins of The Mind

9. Start with a puzzle (notice how you start to wonder who is she talking about in this introduction)

“The first time I heard her I didn’t hear her at all. My parents did not prepare me. (The natural thing in these situations is to blame the parents.) She was nowhere to be found on their four-foot-tall wood veneer hi-fi. Given the variety of voices you got to hear on that contraption, her absence was a little strange.” – Zadie Smith – Some Notes on Attunement

10. Start with dark humor

“When I was young, I thought Life: A User’s Manual would teach me how to live and Suicide: A User’s Manual how to die.” – Édouard Levé – When I Look at a Strawberry, I Think of a Tongue

11. Start with an unusual question that will pull the readers in

“Do you know what a twerp is? When I was in Shortridge High School in Indianapolis 65 years ago, a twerp was a guy who stuck a set of false teeth up his butt and bit the buttons off the back seats of taxicabs. (And a snarf was a guy who sniffed the seats of girls’ bicycles.)” – Kurt Vonnegut – Dispatch From A Man Without a Country

12. Commence by taking the reader into the world of mystery and awe

“The earliest experience of art must have been that it was incantatory, magical; art was an instrument of ritual. (Cf. the paintings in the caves at Lascaux, Altamira, Niaux, La Pasiega, etc.) The earliest theory of art, that of the Greek philosophers, proposed that art was mimesis, imitation of reality.” – Susan Sontag – Against Interpretation

13. State your thesis at the very beginning – be clear about it

“Science has beauty, power, and majesty that can provide spiritual as well as practical fulfillment. But superstition and pseudoscience keep getting in the way providing easy answers, casually pressing our awe buttons, and cheapening the experience.” – Carl Sagan – Does Truth Matter – Science, Pseudoscience, and Civilization

14. Start with the obvious that’s not so obvious after all

“To do something well you have to like it. That idea is not exactly novel. We’ve got it down to four words: “Do what you love.” But it’s not enough just to tell people that. Doing what you love is complicated.” – Paul Graham – How To Do What You Love

15. Be unpredictable and highly intellectual

“Once, in a dry season, I wrote in large letters across two pages of a notebook that innocence ends when one is stripped of the delusion that one likes oneself. Although now, some years later, I marvel that a mind on the outs with itself should have nonetheless made painstaking record of its every tremor, I recall with embarrassing clarity the flavor of those particular ashes. It was a matter of misplaced self-respect.” – Joan Didion – On Self Respect

16. Get straight to the point

“The enormous, pungent, and extremely well marketed Maine Lobster Festival is held every late July in the state’s mid-coast region, meaning the western side of Penobscot Bay, the nerve stem of Maine’s lobster industry.” – David Foster Wallace – Consider The Lobster

17. Start in a deeply emotional, poetic manner

“The collie wakes me up about three times a night, summoning me from a great distance as I row my boat through a dim, complicated dream. She’s on the shoreline, barking. Wake up. She’s staring at me with her head slightly tipped to the side, long nose, gazing eyes, toenails clenched to get a purchase on the wood floor. We used to call her the face of love.” – Jo Ann Beard – The Fourth State of Matter

18. Begin by describing the place and circumstances in great detail

“Two blocks away from the Mississippi State Capitol, and on the same street with it, where our house was when I was a child growing up in Jackson, it was possible to have a little pasture behind your backyard where you could keep a Jersey cow, which we did. My mother herself milked her. A thrifty homemaker, wife, and mother of three, she also did all her cooking. And as far as I can recall, she never set foot inside a grocery store. It wasn’t necessary.” – Eudora Welty – The Little Store

19. Start by presenting an original idea (frame it in a way that the reader never considered before)

“Saints should always be judged guilty until they are proved innocent, but the tests that have to be applied to them are not, of course, the same in all cases. In Gandhi’s case the questions one feels inclined to ask are: to what extent was Gandhi moved by vanity — by the consciousness of himself as a humble, naked old man, sitting on a praying mat and shaking empires by sheer spiritual power — and to what extent did he compromise his principles by entering politics, which of their nature are inseparable from coercion and fraud?” – George Orwell – Reflections on Gandhi

20. Be clear-headed and approach the subject as objectively as possible

“Fantasists and zealots can be found on both sides of the debate over guns in America. On the one hand, many gun rights advocates reject even the most sensible restrictions on the sale of weapons to the public. On the other, proponents of stricter gun laws often seem unable to understand why a good person would ever want ready access to a loaded firearm. Between these two extremes, we must find grounds for a rational discussion about the problem of gun violence.” – Sam Harris – The Riddle of The Gun

How to Begin an Essay: 13 Engaging Strategies

ThoughtCo / Hugo Lin

  • M.A., Modern English and American Literature, University of Leicester
  • B.A., English, State University of New York

An effective introductory paragraph both informs and motivates. It lets readers know what your essay is about and it encourages them to keep reading.

There are countless ways to begin an essay effectively. As a start, here are 13 introductory strategies accompanied by examples from a wide range of professional writers.

State Your Thesis Briefly and Directly

But avoid making your thesis a bald announcement, such as "This essay is about...".

"It is time, at last, to speak the truth about Thanksgiving, and the truth is this. Thanksgiving is really not such a terrific holiday...." (Michael J. Arlen, "Ode to Thanksgiving." The Camera Age: Essays on Television . Penguin, 1982)

Pose a Question Related to Your Subject

Follow up the question with an answer, or an invitation for your readers to answer the question.

"What is the charm of necklaces? Why would anyone put something extra around their neck and then invest it with special significance? A necklace doesn't afford warmth in cold weather, like a scarf, or protection in combat, like chain mail; it only decorates. We might say, it borrows meaning from what it surrounds and sets off, the head with its supremely important material contents, and the face, that register of the soul. When photographers discuss the way in which a photograph reduces the reality it represents, they mention not only the passage from three dimensions to two, but also the selection of a point de vue that favors the top of the body rather than the bottom, and the front rather than the back. The face is the jewel in the crown of the body, and so we give it a setting." (Emily R. Grosholz, "On Necklaces." Prairie Schooner , Summer 2007)

State an Interesting Fact About Your Subject

" The peregrine falcon was brought back from the brink of extinction by a ban on DDT, but also by a peregrine falcon mating hat invented by an ornithologist at Cornell University. If you cannot buy this, Google it. Female falcons had grown dangerously scarce. A few wistful males nevertheless maintained a sort of sexual loitering ground. The hat was imagined, constructed, and then forthrightly worn by the ornithologist as he patrolled this loitering ground, singing, Chee-up! Chee-up! and bowing like an overpolite Japanese Buddhist trying to tell somebody goodbye...." (David James Duncan, "Cherish This Ecstasy." The Sun , July 2008)

Present Your Thesis as a Recent Discovery or Revelation

"I've finally figured out the difference between neat people and sloppy people. The distinction is, as always, moral. Neat people are lazier and meaner than sloppy people." (Suzanne Britt Jordan, "Neat People vs. Sloppy People." Show and Tell . Morning Owl Press, 1983)

Briefly Describe the Primary Setting of Your Essay

"It was in Burma, a sodden morning of the rains. A sickly light, like yellow tinfoil, was slanting over the high walls into the jail yard. We were waiting outside the condemned cells, a row of sheds fronted with double bars, like small animal cages. Each cell measured about ten feet by ten and was quite bare within except for a plank bed and a pot of drinking water. In some of them brown silent men were squatting at the inner bars, with their blankets draped round them. These were the condemned men, due to be hanged within the next week or two." (George Orwell, "A Hanging," 1931)

Recount an Incident That Dramatizes Your Subject

"One October afternoon three years ago while I was visiting my parents, my mother made a request I dreaded and longed to fulfill. She had just poured me a cup of Earl Grey from her Japanese iron teapot, shaped like a little pumpkin; outside, two cardinals splashed in the birdbath in the weak Connecticut sunlight. Her white hair was gathered at the nape of her neck, and her voice was low. “Please help me get Jeff’s pacemaker turned off,” she said, using my father’s first name. I nodded, and my heart knocked." (Katy Butler, "What Broke My Father's Heart." The New York Times Magazine , June 18, 2010)

Use the Narrative Strategy of Delay

The narrative strategy of delay allows you to put off identifying your subject just long enough to pique your readers' interest without frustrating them.

"They woof. Though I have photographed them before, I have never heard them speak, for they are mostly silent birds. Lacking a syrinx, the avian equivalent of the human larynx, they are incapable of song. According to field guides the only sounds they make are grunts and hisses, though the Hawk Conservancy in the United Kingdom reports that adults may utter a croaking coo and that young black vultures, when annoyed, emit a kind of immature snarl...." (Lee Zacharias, "Buzzards." Southern Humanities Review , 2007)

Use the Historical Present Tense

An effective method of beginning an essay is to use historical present tense to relate an incident from the past as if it were happening now.

"Ben and I are sitting side by side in the very back of his mother’s station wagon. We face glowing white headlights of cars following us, our sneakers pressed against the back hatch door. This is our joy—his and mine—to sit turned away from our moms and dads in this place that feels like a secret, as though they are not even in the car with us. They have just taken us out to dinner, and now we are driving home. Years from this evening, I won’t actually be sure that this boy sitting beside me is named Ben. But that doesn’t matter tonight. What I know for certain right now is that I love him, and I need to tell him this fact before we return to our separate houses, next door to each other. We are both five." (Ryan Van Meter, "First." The Gettysburg Review , Winter 2008)

Briefly Describe a Process That Leads Into Your Subject

"I like to take my time when I pronounce someone dead. The bare-minimum requirement is one minute with a stethoscope pressed to someone’s chest, listening for a sound that is not there; with my fingers bearing down on the side of someone’s neck, feeling for an absent pulse; with a flashlight beamed into someone’s fixed and dilated pupils, waiting for the constriction that will not come. If I’m in a hurry, I can do all of these in sixty seconds, but when I have the time, I like to take a minute with each task." (Jane Churchon, "The Dead Book." The Sun , February 2009)

Reveal a Secret or Make a Candid Observation

"I spy on my patients. Ought not a doctor to observe his patients by any means and from any stance, that he might the more fully assemble evidence? So I stand in doorways of hospital rooms and gaze. Oh, it is not all that furtive an act. Those in bed need only look up to discover me. But they never do." ( Richard Selzer , "The Discus Thrower." Confessions of a Knife . Simon & Schuster, 1979)

Open with a Riddle, Joke, or Humorous Quotation

You can use a riddle , joke, or humorous quotation to reveal something about your subject.

" Q: What did Eve say to Adam on being expelled from the Garden of Eden? A: 'I think we're in a time of transition.' The irony of this joke is not lost as we begin a new century and anxieties about social change seem rife. The implication of this message, covering the first of many periods of transition, is that change is normal; there is, in fact, no era or society in which change is not a permanent feature of the social landscape...." (Betty G. Farrell, Family: The Making of an Idea, an Institution, and a Controversy in American Culture . Westview Press, 1999)

Offer a Contrast Between Past and Present

"As a child, I was made to look out the window of a moving car and appreciate the beautiful scenery, with the result that now I don't care much for nature. I prefer parks, ones with radios going chuckawaka chuckawaka and the delicious whiff of bratwurst and cigarette smoke." (Garrison Keillor, "Walking Down The Canyon." Time , July 31, 2000)

Offer a Contrast Between Image and Reality

A compelling essay can begin with a contrast between a common misconception and the opposing truth.

"They aren’t what most people think they are. Human eyes, touted as ethereal objects by poets and novelists throughout history, are nothing more than white spheres, somewhat larger than your average marble, covered by a leather-like tissue known as sclera and filled with nature’s facsimile of Jell-O. Your beloved’s eyes may pierce your heart, but in all likelihood they closely resemble the eyes of every other person on the planet. At least I hope they do, for otherwise he or she suffers from severe myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), or worse...." (John Gamel, "The Elegant Eye." Alaska Quarterly Review , 2009)

An introduction is the opening section of an essay, paper, or other written work. It introduces the topic and provides background information, context, and an overview of what the reader can expect from the rest of the work. 1 The key is to be concise and to the point, providing enough information to engage the reader without delving into excessive detail.

The essay introduction is crucial as it sets the tone for the entire piece and provides the reader with a roadmap of what to expect. Here are key elements to include in your essay introduction:

  • Hook : Start with an attention-grabbing statement or question to engage the reader. This could be a surprising fact, a relevant quote, or a compelling anecdote.
  • Background information : Provide context and background information to help the reader understand the topic. This can include historical information, definitions of key terms, or an overview of the current state of affairs related to your topic.
  • Thesis statement : Clearly state your main argument or position on the topic. Your thesis should be concise and specific, providing a clear direction for your essay.

Before we get into how to write an essay introduction, we need to know how it is structured. The structure of an essay is crucial for organizing your thoughts and presenting them clearly and logically. It is divided as follows: 2

  • Introduction:  The introduction should grab the reader’s attention with a hook, provide context, and include a thesis statement that presents the main argument or purpose of the essay.
  • Body:  The body should consist of focused paragraphs that support your thesis statement using evidence and analysis. Each paragraph should concentrate on a single central idea or argument and provide evidence, examples, or analysis to back it up.
  • Conclusion:  The conclusion should summarize the main points and restate the thesis differently. End with a final statement that leaves a lasting impression on the reader. Avoid new information or arguments.

an essay on new beginning

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to write an essay introduction:

  • Start with a Hook : Begin your introduction paragraph with an attention-grabbing statement, question, quote, or anecdote related to your topic. The hook should pique the reader’s interest and encourage them to continue reading.
  • Provide Background Information : This helps the reader understand the relevance and importance of the topic.
  • State Your Thesis Statement : The last sentence is the main argument or point of your essay. It should be clear, concise, and directly address the topic of your essay.
  • Preview the Main Points : This gives the reader an idea of what to expect and how you will support your thesis.
  • Keep it Concise and Clear : Avoid going into too much detail or including information not directly relevant to your topic.
  • Revise : Revise your introduction after you’ve written the rest of your essay to ensure it aligns with your final argument.

Here’s an example of an essay introduction paragraph about the importance of education:

Education is often viewed as a fundamental human right and a key social and economic development driver. As Nelson Mandela once famously said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” It is the key to unlocking a wide range of opportunities and benefits for individuals, societies, and nations. In today’s constantly evolving world, education has become even more critical. It has expanded beyond traditional classroom learning to include digital and remote learning, making education more accessible and convenient. This essay will delve into the importance of education in empowering individuals to achieve their dreams, improving societies by promoting social justice and equality, and driving economic growth by developing a skilled workforce and promoting innovation.

This introduction paragraph example includes a hook (the quote by Nelson Mandela), provides some background information on education, and states the thesis statement (the importance of education).

This is one of the key steps in how to write an essay introduction. Crafting a compelling hook is vital because it sets the tone for your entire essay and determines whether your readers will stay interested. A good hook draws the reader in and sets the stage for the rest of your essay.

  • Avoid Dry Fact : Instead of simply stating a bland fact, try to make it engaging and relevant to your topic. For example, if you’re writing about the benefits of exercise, you could start with a startling statistic like, “Did you know that regular exercise can increase your lifespan by up to seven years?”
  • Avoid Using a Dictionary Definition : While definitions can be informative, they’re not always the most captivating way to start an essay. Instead, try to use a quote, anecdote, or provocative question to pique the reader’s interest. For instance, if you’re writing about freedom, you could begin with a quote from a famous freedom fighter or philosopher.
  • Do Not Just State a Fact That the Reader Already Knows : This ties back to the first point—your hook should surprise or intrigue the reader. For Here’s an introduction paragraph example, if you’re writing about climate change, you could start with a thought-provoking statement like, “Despite overwhelming evidence, many people still refuse to believe in the reality of climate change.”

Including background information in the introduction section of your essay is important to provide context and establish the relevance of your topic. When writing the background information, you can follow these steps:

  • Start with a General Statement:  Begin with a general statement about the topic and gradually narrow it down to your specific focus. For example, when discussing the impact of social media, you can begin by making a broad statement about social media and its widespread use in today’s society, as follows: “Social media has become an integral part of modern life, with billions of users worldwide.”
  • Define Key Terms : Define any key terms or concepts that may be unfamiliar to your readers but are essential for understanding your argument.
  • Provide Relevant Statistics:  Use statistics or facts to highlight the significance of the issue you’re discussing. For instance, “According to a report by Statista, the number of social media users is expected to reach 4.41 billion by 2025.”
  • Discuss the Evolution:  Mention previous research or studies that have been conducted on the topic, especially those that are relevant to your argument. Mention key milestones or developments that have shaped its current impact. You can also outline some of the major effects of social media. For example, you can briefly describe how social media has evolved, including positives such as increased connectivity and issues like cyberbullying and privacy concerns.
  • Transition to Your Thesis:  Use the background information to lead into your thesis statement, which should clearly state the main argument or purpose of your essay. For example, “Given its pervasive influence, it is crucial to examine the impact of social media on mental health.”

an essay on new beginning

A thesis statement is a concise summary of the main point or claim of an essay, research paper, or other type of academic writing. It appears near the end of the introduction. Here’s how to write a thesis statement:

  • Identify the topic:  Start by identifying the topic of your essay. For example, if your essay is about the importance of exercise for overall health, your topic is “exercise.”
  • State your position:  Next, state your position or claim about the topic. This is the main argument or point you want to make. For example, if you believe that regular exercise is crucial for maintaining good health, your position could be: “Regular exercise is essential for maintaining good health.”
  • Support your position:  Provide a brief overview of the reasons or evidence that support your position. These will be the main points of your essay. For example, if you’re writing an essay about the importance of exercise, you could mention the physical health benefits, mental health benefits, and the role of exercise in disease prevention.
  • Make it specific:  Ensure your thesis statement clearly states what you will discuss in your essay. For example, instead of saying, “Exercise is good for you,” you could say, “Regular exercise, including cardiovascular and strength training, can improve overall health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.”

Examples of essay introduction

Here are examples of essay introductions for different types of essays:

Argumentative Essay Introduction Example:

Topic: Should the voting age be lowered to 16?

“The question of whether the voting age should be lowered to 16 has sparked nationwide debate. While some argue that 16-year-olds lack the requisite maturity and knowledge to make informed decisions, others argue that doing so would imbue young people with agency and give them a voice in shaping their future.”

Expository Essay Introduction Example

Topic: The benefits of regular exercise

“In today’s fast-paced world, the importance of regular exercise cannot be overstated. From improving physical health to boosting mental well-being, the benefits of exercise are numerous and far-reaching. This essay will examine the various advantages of regular exercise and provide tips on incorporating it into your daily routine.”

Text: “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee

“Harper Lee’s novel, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ is a timeless classic that explores themes of racism, injustice, and morality in the American South. Through the eyes of young Scout Finch, the reader is taken on a journey that challenges societal norms and forces characters to confront their prejudices. This essay will analyze the novel’s use of symbolism, character development, and narrative structure to uncover its deeper meaning and relevance to contemporary society.”

  • Engaging and Relevant First Sentence : The opening sentence captures the reader’s attention and relates directly to the topic.
  • Background Information : Enough background information is introduced to provide context for the thesis statement.
  • Definition of Important Terms : Key terms or concepts that might be unfamiliar to the audience or are central to the argument are defined.
  • Clear Thesis Statement : The thesis statement presents the main point or argument of the essay.
  • Relevance to Main Body : Everything in the introduction directly relates to and sets up the discussion in the main body of the essay.

an essay on new beginning

Writing a strong introduction is crucial for setting the tone and context of your essay. Here are the key takeaways for how to write essay introduction: 3

  • Hook the Reader : Start with an engaging hook to grab the reader’s attention. This could be a compelling question, a surprising fact, a relevant quote, or an anecdote.
  • Provide Background : Give a brief overview of the topic, setting the context and stage for the discussion.
  • Thesis Statement : State your thesis, which is the main argument or point of your essay. It should be concise, clear, and specific.
  • Preview the Structure : Outline the main points or arguments to help the reader understand the organization of your essay.
  • Keep it Concise : Avoid including unnecessary details or information not directly related to your thesis.
  • Revise and Edit : Revise your introduction to ensure clarity, coherence, and relevance. Check for grammar and spelling errors.
  • Seek Feedback : Get feedback from peers or instructors to improve your introduction further.

The purpose of an essay introduction is to give an overview of the topic, context, and main ideas of the essay. It is meant to engage the reader, establish the tone for the rest of the essay, and introduce the thesis statement or central argument.

An essay introduction typically ranges from 5-10% of the total word count. For example, in a 1,000-word essay, the introduction would be roughly 50-100 words. However, the length can vary depending on the complexity of the topic and the overall length of the essay.

An essay introduction is critical in engaging the reader and providing contextual information about the topic. To ensure its effectiveness, consider incorporating these key elements: a compelling hook, background information, a clear thesis statement, an outline of the essay’s scope, a smooth transition to the body, and optional signposting sentences.

The process of writing an essay introduction is not necessarily straightforward, but there are several strategies that can be employed to achieve this end. When experiencing difficulty initiating the process, consider the following techniques: begin with an anecdote, a quotation, an image, a question, or a startling fact to pique the reader’s interest. It may also be helpful to consider the five W’s of journalism: who, what, when, where, why, and how.   For instance, an anecdotal opening could be structured as follows: “As I ascended the stage, momentarily blinded by the intense lights, I could sense the weight of a hundred eyes upon me, anticipating my next move. The topic of discussion was climate change, a subject I was passionate about, and it was my first public speaking event. Little did I know , that pivotal moment would not only alter my perspective but also chart my life’s course.”

Crafting a compelling thesis statement for your introduction paragraph is crucial to grab your reader’s attention. To achieve this, avoid using overused phrases such as “In this paper, I will write about” or “I will focus on” as they lack originality. Instead, strive to engage your reader by substantiating your stance or proposition with a “so what” clause. While writing your thesis statement, aim to be precise, succinct, and clear in conveying your main argument.

To create an effective essay introduction, ensure it is clear, engaging, relevant, and contains a concise thesis statement. It should transition smoothly into the essay and be long enough to cover necessary points but not become overwhelming. Seek feedback from peers or instructors to assess its effectiveness.

Essays About New Year: 5 Examples and Prompts

The new year marks a new beginning for everyone. If you are writing essays about new year, you can start by reading some essay examples.

On new year’s day, everything resets. The calendar returns to January, the year’s first month, and the year starts anew. In the same way, most people see the start of a new year as the start of something better for themselves.

They want to improve themselves in specific ways by picking up good traits, being kinder, and trying to get out of bad habits and mannerisms; they set new year’s resolutions to attempt to break these habits. New year’s eve and new year’s day are undoubtedly some of the most important days of the year.

If you are writing an essay about new year, start by reading these examples.

Are you looking for more? Check out our guide packed full of transition words for essays

1. The New Year: A Time for Reflection and a Time to Move Forward by Susanne Carlson

2. my new year’s resolution by francisco sáez, 3. my lonely new year’s eve party will consist of sadness, hope, and life-changing gratitude by dawn bevier, 4. the psychology of new years eve reflection by ben farrell, 5. why is new year’s eve so depressing by leila ettachfini, 1. what is the importance of new year’s resolutions, 2. different new year celebrations, 3. is new year a new beginning, 4. why some people find new year’s celebrations depressing, 5. are new year’s resolutions a waste of time.

“With reflection and attention to positive change, taking note of what we have learned on our journey up until now, can give us the opportunity to apply it to the future, to take with us what is helpful and to leave behind what is not.”

Carlson writes about the importance of reflection and learning from one’s mistakes for the new year ahead. She sees the new year as a time for new beginnings; she wants it to be the start of positive change for others, just as it has been for her. Reflection is essential, as it allows us to see what we can improve on and do better in the coming year.

“According to Goleman, the link between attention and excellence is behind almost all our achievements. Attention is needed not only to understand, learn or remember, but also to read the emotions of others, generate empathy and build good relationships. It is an asset that, despite being little known and despised, has great relevance in how we face life.”

Sáez briefly explains his new year’s resolution: to be more attentive. He wants to improve his attention and focus on forming better relationships with others, healthily using technology, and better his mental health. By reading the book Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence , he hopes to hone his attention for the new year and do better in the future. You might also be interested in these essays about celebration .

“And yes, I know this pandemic is not done with its destruction, but I also know we’re fighting back like hell and making progress. And that long-awaited day of celebration is now coming sooner rather than later. And when that day comes, I can’t help but believe that the world will be a better place. I know I will be a better person and millions of you will be as well.”

In this solemn piece, Bevier laments new year’s celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed millions. She is sad for those she has lost and the loss of the pre-pandemic life she loved. However, she hopes the next new year will not be like the last, and she has learned to be grateful for the more minor things in life. The pandemic has taught her a lot, but most importantly, to be optimistic for the future and to look ahead to the new year with hope, kindness, and gratitude.

“In reality, new years eve is no different to any other night of the year yet; we can’t help but assign some special meaning to the 31st of December. The psychological significance of the night can be a good thing, but it can also create tremendous anxiety for us.”

Farrell explains the psychological pressure of New Year’s Eve. This one night is no different from any other, but since it is the last one of the year, people feel the need to reflect not only on the day but the entire year. The imagery of big parties and “new beginnings” further add to the pressure, as people feel the need to have the “picture-perfect” new year. He says that while it can be helpful to use the beginning of the year as the start of positive change, it is more important to learn from one’s mistakes, no matter what time of the year.

“‘Anytime you let social convention dictate what you do rather than doing what feels best for you, you run the risk of anxiety, depression, and so on,’ says Dr. Kubiak. New Year’s Eve leaves this group with a tough choice: go out even though you really don’t want to or deal with the uncomfortable task of telling your friends that you’re going to sit this one out.”

Ettachfini explains new year’s eve from the perspective of those who get anxious or depressed during this time. Failure during the year, social anxiety, and the feeling of having to say goodbye to the year are all contributing factors. We’ll look at hardships as moments that moved us into a better position and changed us for the better. In this article, we’re going to share 13 ways to embrace new beginnings in 2023 to change your life in marvelously.

an essay on new beginning

1. Let go of the past

Before we start a new chapter in life, we need to close the door to the previous one. You can’t embark on a new beginning, if you’re stuck in a thought loop about revenge or getting justice. Until you can actually mentally strengthen yourself to move forward, you won’t benefit from what new beginnings can bring you. If you’ve had a horrible past and get stuck in it, you will never know how good your life can become. You need to realize that what’s done is done and can’t be changed. You can’t go back in time and undo mistakes or trauma. All you can do is learn from it, the chaos that’s been caused, and make better decisions moving forward. If you’re looking to build a brighter future for yourself, all you can take from your past are the life lessons . Don’t keep bringing the past into your future.

2. Know change can be good

When all we’ve seen in our lives is trauma, hardship, and challenges, it’s hard to imagine a world where change could lead to something good. Those with childhood trauma often imagine their adulthood as more difficult, especially if they carry that trauma into their future. An important thing to note is that bad events can lead to good events. Sometimes, all those difficulties taught you something valuable so you can make better decisions in your future. It’s normal to experience a fear of change. But it’s crucial to remember that change can be a good thing. Sometimes, you deserve something so magical that coming up with your ideal scenario isn’t good enough. Let the story unfold and see what surprises and goodness life has in store for you in these new beginnings.

3. Create new goals

As you embark on new beginnings, the best way to keep yourself on track is to create new goals. Having a process in place with well-defined ideas of what you hope to accomplish will make you more likely to achieve them. Knowing what you actually want in life is an important step to getting it. Plus, it guides you on your journey, when you set timelines to keep you accountable. So, make a list of the goals you hope to achieve for your new beginnings. You might include goals regarding your happiness, financial situation, health, and other things that help ensure you’re happy and in control of the next chapter in your life.

4. Surround yourself with good people

Having a strong sense of community will help you in your new beginnings. The people in your life will make or break you. If you’re around toxic people who fail to help you, you’ll never grow or succeed. However, if you’re around people who lift you up, cheer you on, and want to see you thrive, you’ll take more action to keep getting better with time. They say you’re most like the five people you spend most of your time with. So surround yourself with happy people , successful people, and supportive people if you hope to achieve great things in life. Cut out the people from your life who bring you down. Your job isn’t to make people better. Your job is to make you better. And by improving yourself , you’ll attract higher quality people into your life.

5. Practice meditation

Your mental health and wellbeing will play a huge role in your new beginnings. When we have poor mental health, we often get stuck in our negative thoughts . We’ll replay the same bad thoughts repeatedly, looking for an exit in our minds that we can’t find. It makes us hate our lives more and makes us more difficult to get along with. When this happens to you, find a therapist who will help you. And, and this is a big and. Do an act of kindness multiple times a day. Look to do something nice for people in every interaction. Praise people, lift them up. And as you’re doing therapy, and acts of kindness, try guided meditation . It’ll help you clear your mind, so you can bring out the best version of yourself. The best meditation app to calm the mind is Declutter The Mind . You’ll find countless meditations you can try to help you bring out the next 2.0 version of yourself that you can be proud of.

6. Build new habits

Forming good habits and eliminating bad habits can be a good practice for new beginnings. It’s all about coming in with the new and shedding the old. What happened in the past shouldn’t be repeated, so the habits that led to those events should be replaced with new habits. For example, if you got into a relationship with a toxic partner, you might make build the habit of creating a list of values you want in your next relationship. Then, you go on dates to find someone with those values. In moments of insecurity, you’ll need to build the habit of saying no to something that doesn’t feel right to prevent repeating history. You’ll reject people who showcase red flags early on, instead of questioning it. And you might listen to your friends, family, and that good old gut instinct when something seems off.

7. Tackle new opportunities

As you embark on new beginnings, it’s time to look towards new opportunities too. For example, if you realize you’re working a job in a negative environment, you might start applying to jobs with higher employee morale. You might start looking at Glassdoor reviews of companies online before applying. You might interview hiring managers about the company culture. And you might say yes to something new. New opportunities can be found all around. And they aren’t all tied to your career. You might look at opportunities to travel, to date someone new, to make a new friend, run an experiment, to start a family, to improve your home situation, learn a new skill, or to start a business.

8. Create a vision board

A fun activity to try at home when working towards new beginnings is to create a vision board. We’re talking magazine cutouts, bristol board, and glue. Like an arts and crafts session about what you want to accomplish in this next year of life. You don’t need a monumentous day like your birthday or new years to create a vision board either. Any day you feel like a new chapter is starting works. You can find countless vision board books on Amazon with pictures and quotes for fitness, home, money, fashion, and travel to help simplify your search of what to include. Then, once you’ve completed your vision board, hang it somewhere you’ll see it a lot. This could be a home office, bedroom, or study. Then, whenever something is achieved from your vision board, feel an attitude of gratitude while standing in front of it.

9. Lean on gratitude

Speaking of gratitude, new beginnings should have an emphasis on being grateful. Come up with a list of things you’re grateful for, your very own gratitude list . When you focus on gratitude instead of what you lack, your mind feels better. You won’t feel like you got the short end of the stick, you won’t be disgruntled, no more complaining about how life sucks . Instead, you’ll see all of the good things you have that keep coming your way. And you’ll continue to attract more good things because of your attitude. An optimistic view of the world helps us in numerous ways that a pessimistic view can’t. Plus, when we experience gratitude, we’re just so much happier. Make it your personal mission to express gratitude in life and to look on at the world with an optimistic lens.

10. Take a break

In some cases, new beginnings might require a quick break or pause before moving forward. It’s important to know when the past isn’t over yet or we’re still not fully healed from past hardships. You’ll take many breaks in life. You’ll take breaks from school, relationships, jobs, and more. Breaks are important part of life where we unplug momentarily. Not recharge. Sometimes, you need to turn yourself off to give yourself a break. Recharging those batteries is daily upkeep. Taking time away from work to relax on a beach and not check a single email or Slack message is life-changing. And you deserve to do that. Taking a break after a series of short relationships to re-evaluate your strategy and improve yourself , can help you find the right person faster (without going on a single date). So, hit the pause button in life when you need to. It’s normal and healthy to do this. And it could be just what makes your new beginning more spectacular.

11. Refresh your wardrobe or office

New beginnings aren’t complete without a change of scenery. You can refresh your wardrobe to improve how you present yourself to the world. Many online stores offer styling services, so you can have a professional stylist help you pick out outfits. For example, Nordstrom has stylists to help you pick work outfits or date night outfits. Whatever the wardrobe refresh calls for. You could also make changes to your home office with new decor, wallpaper, paint, or lighting. Wherever you feel like you need to make a change, add something new to your environment to bring back your spunk and edge. This new beginning is calling for you to bring your best self forward, so create an environment where you’ll thrive.

new you

12. Find a new coach or mentor

As you embark on new beginnings, partnering with a coach or mentor can help ensure you start over on the right track. There are many coaches you can hire: mind coach (therapist), business coach, health coach, money coach, and so on. Hire the type of mentor that aligns with what you hope to accomplish. You might find that more than one coach are needed to help you jump start things, especially if it’s a big life change you’re going through. But having someone speak to you, motivate you, and then you actually go out and do the work is key. Most people will hype you up, but as soon as they’re gone, so is the motivation. Find someone who will be there to hold you accountable. Doing daily text messages asking you what your progress is. Checking in on you when you’re not pushing hard or are slipping through the cracks. It’s about finding the ultimate ally rather than just listening to a motivational speech.

13. Celebrate your progress

New beginnings are all about new wins. As you go onto your next life chapter, it’s important to track your progress, see how far you’ve come, and make tweaks. Mistakes, disappointment, and failure will still happen in your new chapter. However, how you learn, grow, and pivot despite these challenges is what will ultimately play a role in your success. Life isn’t without struggle, even when we do everything right. It’s unpredictable and there are many moving parts. But celebrate the highs as they come. And learn quick from the lows. Be a champion in your success. Many awards get given out at tournaments. Maybe spend some time giving yourself awards and praise for your accomplishments too. Pat yourself on the back for how far you’ve come. Not everyone does it. But you did.

celebrate your progress

New beginnings are just that beginnings. But the road in life is long, filled with turns, and roadblocks along the way. Prepare yourself for success by strengthening your mind, body, and willpower. Continue learning from mistakes as they happening and making changes as needed. Meditate with the Declutter The Mind app to strengthen your mind. Shop til you drop on a new outfit or to revamp your environment. Cut out the wrong people and bring in the good folks who aren’t afraid to cheer you on when you’re crushing it. You will succeed in life when you have a clear vision from goal setting and pursue your new path relentlessly. Forge ahead.

You Can Make New Resolutions Any Day

Often, people make New Year Resolutions , but either do nothing to carry them out or start and then quit. This creates feelings of frustration, unhappiness, and failure.

You don’t have just one opportunity to carry out a decision or achieve a goal. If you fail to carry them out, you don’t need to wait until the beginning of next year.

You can make a new resolution every day. You can start again every day if you fail in your first, second, or even third attempt.

There are no limitations on making new decisions and forming new goals, and there are no limitations on when to begin doing new things. Every day is suitable for making a resolution and a new beginning.

You Can Make a New Start of Life Every Day

Every day is a new beginning and the start of your new life.

The question is whether you carry through what you decided and promised. This is most important. What’s the use of making decisions and promises but not following through on them?

Do you make New Year Resolutions?

If you do, do you try to carry them out?

When you begin to carry them out, do you persevere until you accomplish them?

Making New Year Resolutions or any other decision at any other time of the year is simple and easy.

Often, they are made in response to some emotion.

However, people quite soon, lose the motivation and enthusiasm and continue living the same kind of life without doing anything to improve their lives.

This is why you need to make resolutions and repeat them every day. It is not enough to state them just once when the New Year begins.

It would be a good idea to write them down on a clean sheet of paper, on the screen of your computer or your smartphone so you can see them, read them, and think about them every day.

You need to repeat your resolutions every day, with belief and faith, and be willing to do whatever is necessary to accomplish them. It is not enough to repeat the words with your lips.

You need to keep expecting success, happiness, and health, no matter your circumstances. This attitude would trigger your subconscious mind to help and motivate you.

You might wish there was some magic to carry out your decisions, promises, and goals.

There is, and it is made of motivation , persistence, willpower and self-discipline . These powers would make your life interesting, happy, and fulfilling.

The Essence of New Beginnings: A Worldwide New Year’s Tale

Table of contents, the significance of new year's traditions around the world, embracing change: how new beginnings impact personal growth, cultural celebrations: exploring diverse new year's customs, symbolism of renewal: the power of starting fresh.

Embrace the magic of fresh starts, uniting the world in a global New Year's journey.

The start of a new year is a time of reflection, celebration, and hope for people all around the world. It is a time when we bid farewell to the past and embrace the possibilities of the future. While the concept of a new year is universal, the way it is celebrated varies greatly from one culture to another. These diverse traditions not only add color and vibrancy to our global tapestry but also offer valuable insights into the values and beliefs of different societies.

In many Western countries, New Year's Eve is a night of revelry and merriment. People gather with friends and family to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one with fireworks, parties, and champagne toasts. The iconic ball drop in Times Square, New York City, is a symbol of this festive spirit. It is a moment that brings people together, united in their shared excitement for the possibilities that lie ahead.

In contrast, the Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a time of deep cultural significance. It is a time when families come together to honor their ancestors and pay respects to the gods. The festivities last for fifteen days and are marked by dragon dances, lantern festivals, and the exchange of red envelopes filled with money. The Chinese believe that the way they celebrate the New Year will set the tone for the rest of the year, so they make sure to start it off on a positive note.

In Japan, the New Year is a time for reflection and renewal. It is a time when people visit temples and shrines to pray for good fortune and health in the coming year. The ringing of bells at midnight on New Year's Eve is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. Additionally, the Japanese have a tradition called “hatsumode,” where they make their first visit of the year to a shrine or temple to express gratitude for the past year and set intentions for the year ahead.

In India, the New Year is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. The festival of Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year. It is a time when people decorate their homes with oil lamps, burst firecrackers, and exchange sweets and gifts. Diwali is a celebration of the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It is a time for families to come together, forgive past grievances, and start afresh.

These are just a few examples of the diverse New Year's traditions that exist around the world. Each tradition is a reflection of the values and beliefs of the culture it belongs to. Whether it is the joyous celebrations of Western countries, the deep-rooted customs of China, the reflective practices of Japan, or the vibrant festivities of India, New Year's traditions serve as a reminder of our shared humanity and our collective desire for a fresh start.

The start of a new year is a time of reflection, renewal, and hope. It is a time when people all over the world come together to celebrate the passing of time and the beginning of something new. While the concept of a new year is universal, the way it is celebrated varies greatly from culture to culture. In this article, we will explore some of the diverse customs and traditions that mark the arrival of a new year in different parts of the world.

In China, the Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is the most important holiday of the year. It is a time when families gather to honor their ancestors and welcome good fortune for the coming year. The festivities last for 15 days and are marked by vibrant parades, dragon dances, and the exchange of red envelopes filled with money. The color red is believed to bring luck and ward off evil spirits, so it is seen everywhere during this time.

In Scotland, the New Year is celebrated with a tradition known as Hogmanay. This ancient custom involves a series of rituals aimed at banishing the old year and welcoming the new one. One of the most famous traditions is the “first-footing,” where the first person to enter a home after midnight brings gifts such as coal, bread, and whiskey to ensure good luck for the coming year. Fireworks, music, and dancing are also common during Hogmanay celebrations.

In Japan, the New Year is a time for quiet reflection and family gatherings. The holiday, known as Oshogatsu, is marked by visits to temples and shrines to pray for good fortune. One of the most important customs is the preparation and eating of osechi-ryori, a special meal consisting of various traditional dishes that symbolize good luck and prosperity. Another popular tradition is the sending of nengajo, or New Year's cards, to friends and family.

In Spain, the New Year is celebrated with a unique tradition known as the Twelve Grapes. As the clock strikes midnight, people gather in town squares and eat twelve grapes, one for each chime of the clock. It is believed that if you can eat all twelve grapes before the last chime, you will have good luck for the coming year. This tradition dates back to the early 20th century and has become a beloved part of Spanish New Year celebrations.

In the United States, New Year's Eve is often marked by parties, fireworks, and the dropping of a giant ball in Times Square, New York City. This iconic event attracts millions of people from around the world who come together to count down the seconds until midnight. It is a time of celebration and reflection, as people bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one with hope and excitement.

As One Journey Ends Another Begins Essay in English

As One Journey Ends Another Begins Essay:  Life is a journey full of new beginnings and endings. As one chapter finishes, another one starts. Embracing change is part of growth and discovery. This essay will discuss how we can learn from life’s endings to start new journeys with confidence.

Endings are hard but they allow new opportunities. When something ends like a job, relationship, or project, it can be scary and sad. However, every ending opens a door for something new. Here are some tips to help you embrace life’s changes:

Reflect on the Journey

Look back at what you learned from the experience ending. Make a list of accomplishments, failures, and lessons. Think about what went well and what you would do differently. Reflecting helps gain perspective and closure.

Learn and Grow

Failures and setbacks teach important lessons if you take the time to learn from them. Ask yourself how you can grow. What skills do you need to develop? How can you avoid making the same mistakes? Endings motivate personal growth and discovery.

Reduce Fear

Big changes can be frightening. Anxiety about the unknown is normal. But don’t let fear hold you back. Make a plan to reduce uncertainty. Take small steps forward. Talk to supportive friends and family. Building confidence helps overcome fear.

Embrace New Opportunities

View endings as a fresh start, not the final stop. Keep an open, positive attitude about what’s next. Look for possibilities instead of limitations. Pursue new interests, relationships, jobs , or adventures. Move ahead with excitement about the future.

As One Journey Ends Another Begins Essay (1500 Words)

Endings and New Beginnings

Major life changes like losing a job, the end of a relationship, or finishing a big project can feel destabilizing. The comfort and familiarity of something concluding is always hard to let go of. Embrace Opportunities

View endings as exciting fresh starts instead of limitations. Look for chances to challenge yourself with new roles, relationships, or adventures. Maintain an open, optimistic mindset focused on possibilities.

Difficult experiences provide invaluable lessons if you’re willing to learn from them. Analyze setbacks thoughtfully. What skills need work? How can you avoid repeating mistakes? Channel that knowledge into personal development . Growth emerges from discomfort.

Appreciate the Journey

Every life journey has value . Appreciate relationships formed, knowledge gained and successes achieved. Gratitude makes endings easier to process. No matter how difficult, these chapters helped shape who you are.

Look Ahead with Confidence

Remember that the future is unwritten. Maintain hope and courage as one chapter ends and another awaits. Believe in your ability to navigate life’s twists and turns. The journey continues with new horizons to explore.

Journeys Throughout Life

The idea that when one adventure ends, a new one begins is perfectly exemplified through life’s many journeys:

  • Childhood’s carefree days give way to increased responsibility as a teenager.
  • High school graduation concludes a foundational academic journey as college opportunities open up.
  • Early career focuses on establishing yourself while mid-career involves mentorship.
  • Empty nesting transitions parents into a new phase as children grow independent.

Endings Are Hard But Helpful

Endings are usually difficult and emotional. The comfort and familiarity of something concluding is hard to let go of. But every ending also provides helpful closure.

  • A graduation ceremony celebrates years of hard academic work.
  • Retiring employees feel nostalgic but also free.
  • A breakup, while painful, allows both people to move on.

Even unchosen endings like being fired, bring an opportunity to reflect and grow. The key is shifting perspective to appreciate endings as catalysts for new, unwritten journeys.

Overcoming Fear of the Unknown

The uncertainty of change is scary. But there are ways to reduce fear of the unknown:

  • Make a Plan.  Proactive planning creates a map when the future is unclear. Break goals into smaller steps.
  • Trust Your Strengths.  Remember skills and talents that have helped you through past transitions. Draw confidence from experience.
  • Support Network.  Share feelings with sympathetic friends and family. Their reassurance can boost optimism.
  • Positive Mindset. Focus on the possibilities, not the limitations. Anxiety lessens when you view change as an exciting challenge.

With courage and readiness, you can overcome uncertainty as one journey ends and another awaits. The unknown simply means writing a new chapter, not the entire story’s conclusion.

Embracing New Beginnings

Endings allow the space and freedom necessary for new journeys to take shape. View endings positively as stepping stones, not roadblocks.

  • Explore Interests.  Use fresh starts to pursue forgotten hobbies or try something new. Enrichment comes from self-discovery.
  • Broaden Perspectives.  Interact with new people and places. Different experiences widen your worldview.
  • Improve Yourself. Work on self-development. Read, take classes, and create goals. Growth requires an open, learner mindset.
  • Find Opportunity. Look for chances to challenge yourself. Try new roles, accept risks, and seize openings that excite you.

With an open mind and optimism, you’re ready to embrace new beginnings. Change leads to invaluable growth, discovery, and joy.

The Learning Never Stops

As one life phase ends, the next one starts. Each journey teaches different lessons in an ongoing cycle:

  • Childhood teaches creativity, friendship, and curiosity.
  • Adolescence nurtures identity, responsibility, and morality.
  • Early career focuses on skills, collaboration, and discipline.
  • Middle age prioritizes purpose, balance, and community .
  • Later life brings appreciation for simplicity, wisdom, and family.

No matter your age or stage, there are always more lessons to learn. The key is staying open. Let endings motivate you rather than discourage you. Conclusions prepare you for new adventures.

Conclusion: A Journey Ends to Remind Us Life Is A Continuous Process

The end of one journey is the start of another. Even when a familiar, comfortable path finishes, an open road lays ahead. View endings as hopeful– a chance to reflect, grow, and embrace new horizons. Reduce anxiety by planning thoughtfully and focusing positively. Remember each closing signals the beginning of an unwritten future filled with possibilities. As one chapter finishes, turn the page and start the next one. The adventures never need to stop.

As One Journey Ends Another Begins Essay on School Life

School life is full of transitions. Moving from primary to secondary school is a big change. Passing high school graduation is an ending that also opens new opportunities. For students, embracing each transition confidently is important for success. Here are some tips:

Reflect on Lessons Learned

Looking back on what you gained from each school phase helps process endings. Appreciate friendships formed and knowledge acquired. Reflect on accomplishments and think about what you’d do differently. Lessons learned can guide you in new settings.

Set New Goals

An academic reset lets you re-evaluate interests and set fresh objectives. Maybe you’ll explore a new subject area or join a different club. Set specific, measurable goals for development. Let endings bring renewed focus.

Overcome Anxiety

New schools involve new students and teachers. These unknowns can provoke anxiety. Ease fears by learning about the new environment beforehand. Ask alumni about their experiences. Visit the campus. Embrace each transition as an adventure.

Show Gratitude

Thank instructors who impacted your education . Keep in touch with close friends. Expressing gratitude brings closure to endings. It reminds you that each school journey shapes who you become.

Adjust Slowly

Big changes take small steps. In new schools, allow time to acclimate. Observe how things work before diving in. As you adjust, remember skills that have helped you adapt in the past.

Try Something New

Fresh starts encourage new behaviors. Use academic endings to push yourself. Take an unfamiliar elective, join a club, or make friends outside your comfort zone. Endings serve as springboards for discovery.

With reflection, planning, and courage, school transitions become growth opportunities. Though one journey is ending, the next adventure awaits.

Find Support

Turn to family, friends, teachers, or trusted mentors for reassurance during school transitions. Their perspective and advice can inspire optimism and confidence. Support eases challenging endings.

Focus on Possibilities

When one school door closes, many more open up. Each level unlocks new educational possibilities. Let go of any disappointments and embrace the opportunities ahead.

Develop New Skills

Academic endings are a chance to improve. Analyze weaknesses and decide which skills to strengthen. For example, you may want to boost time management, test-taking, or public speaking skills. Use fresh starts to become more capable.

Keep Learning

Intellectual curiosity continues beyond graduation. Make learning a lifelong journey by reading diverse books, taking community classes, doing research, or mentoring younger students. Stay inquisitive.

Enjoy Each Phase

Cherish every school journey , whether just starting preschool or graduating from university. Appreciate what each level offers, from carefree playtime to stimulating lectures. Learning looks different at each stage.

Share Your Story

Let past difficulties become life lessons that inspire others. Talk to younger students about challenges you faced and overcame. Use your school journey to make a difference.

Stay Positive

Remember that with an optimistic attitude, you have the power to make each transition successful. Though endings can be emotional, maintain hope about the future. Positivity is key.

As one school journey ends, the next experience starts, bringing new lessons, goals, and opportunities. By reflecting on the past, embracing change, and staying focused on possibilities, students can confidently move through academic endings and beginnings. Each transition is simply the start of another exciting journey.

The journey through school is full of transitions, from primary to secondary and beyond. With courage, optimism, and reflection, students can make the most of life’s endings and beginnings. Though saying goodbye is difficult, the next promising chapter lies ahead, waiting to be written.

There is a plethora of lessons and opportunities to introspect at each end. Though we are often nostalgic about phases that have passed, life continues to challenge and surprise us till death no matter how old we get. So make the most of your college days, for life left unsuccessful may be achieved more later. But never expect karma or the future. Just keep moving forward, for the human journey is long but futile to anticipate in its entirety.

As one journey ends, another begins. Whether it be school, a relationship or a career, endings are inevitable. While it’s normal to grieve over failure or feel uncertainty about starting something new, these transitions allow for invaluable growth and change. By taking time to process lessons learned, overcoming fear, and focusing on possibilities, we can embrace each new chapter with hope and courage. The journey never truly stops – life is a continuous process of experiences, challenges, and opportunities waiting to be lived.

Other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about writing an essay, an appeal to the senses: the development of the braille system in nineteenth-century france.

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). While disabled people in general suffered from discrimination, blindness was widely viewed as the worst disability, and it was commonly believed that blind people were incapable of pursuing a profession or improving themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). This demonstrates the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: without access to text, it was considered impossible to fully participate in society. Blind people were excluded from the sighted world, but also entirely dependent on sighted people for information and education.

In France, debates about how to deal with disability led to the adoption of different strategies over time. While people with temporary difficulties were able to access public welfare, the most common response to people with long-term disabilities, such as hearing or vision loss, was to group them together in institutions (Tombs, 1996). At first, a joint institute for the blind and deaf was created, and although the partnership was motivated more by financial considerations than by the well-being of the residents, the institute aimed to help people develop skills valuable to society (Weygand, 2009). Eventually blind institutions were separated from deaf institutions, and the focus shifted towards education of the blind, as was the case for the Royal Institute for Blind Youth, which Louis Braille attended (Jimenez et al, 2009). The growing acknowledgement of the uniqueness of different disabilities led to more targeted education strategies, fostering an environment in which the benefits of a specifically blind education could be more widely recognized.

Several different systems of tactile reading can be seen as forerunners to the method Louis Braille developed, but these systems were all developed based on the sighted system. The Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris taught the students to read embossed roman letters, a method created by the school’s founder, Valentin Hauy (Jimenez et al., 2009). Reading this way proved to be a rather arduous task, as the letters were difficult to distinguish by touch. The embossed letter method was based on the reading system of sighted people, with minimal adaptation for those with vision loss. As a result, this method did not gain significant success among blind students.

Louis Braille was bound to be influenced by his school’s founder, but the most influential pre-Braille tactile reading system was Charles Barbier’s night writing. A soldier in Napoleon’s army, Barbier developed a system in 1819 that used 12 dots with a five line musical staff (Kersten, 1997). His intention was to develop a system that would allow the military to communicate at night without the need for light (Herron, 2009). The code developed by Barbier was phonetic (Jimenez et al., 2009); in other words, the code was designed for sighted people and was based on the sounds of words, not on an actual alphabet. Barbier discovered that variants of raised dots within a square were the easiest method of reading by touch (Jimenez et al., 2009). This system proved effective for the transmission of short messages between military personnel, but the symbols were too large for the fingertip, greatly reducing the speed at which a message could be read (Herron, 2009). For this reason, it was unsuitable for daily use and was not widely adopted in the blind community.

Nevertheless, Barbier’s military dot system was more efficient than Hauy’s embossed letters, and it provided the framework within which Louis Braille developed his method. Barbier’s system, with its dashes and dots, could form over 4000 combinations (Jimenez et al., 2009). Compared to the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet, this was an absurdly high number. Braille kept the raised dot form, but developed a more manageable system that would reflect the sighted alphabet. He replaced Barbier’s dashes and dots with just six dots in a rectangular configuration (Jimenez et al., 2009). The result was that the blind population in France had a tactile reading system using dots (like Barbier’s) that was based on the structure of the sighted alphabet (like Hauy’s); crucially, this system was the first developed specifically for the purposes of the blind.

While the Braille system gained immediate popularity with the blind students at the Institute in Paris, it had to gain acceptance among the sighted before its adoption throughout France. This support was necessary because sighted teachers and leaders had ultimate control over the propagation of Braille resources. Many of the teachers at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth resisted learning Braille’s system because they found the tactile method of reading difficult to learn (Bullock & Galst, 2009). This resistance was symptomatic of the prevalent attitude that the blind population had to adapt to the sighted world rather than develop their own tools and methods. Over time, however, with the increasing impetus to make social contribution possible for all, teachers began to appreciate the usefulness of Braille’s system (Bullock & Galst, 2009), realizing that access to reading could help improve the productivity and integration of people with vision loss. It took approximately 30 years, but the French government eventually approved the Braille system, and it was established throughout the country (Bullock & Galst, 2009).

Although Blind people remained marginalized throughout the nineteenth century, the Braille system granted them growing opportunities for social participation. Most obviously, Braille allowed people with vision loss to read the same alphabet used by sighted people (Bullock & Galst, 2009), allowing them to participate in certain cultural experiences previously unavailable to them. Written works, such as books and poetry, had previously been inaccessible to the blind population without the aid of a reader, limiting their autonomy. As books began to be distributed in Braille, this barrier was reduced, enabling people with vision loss to access information autonomously. The closing of the gap between the abilities of blind and the sighted contributed to a gradual shift in blind people’s status, lessening the cultural perception of the blind as essentially different and facilitating greater social integration.

The Braille system also had important cultural effects beyond the sphere of written culture. Its invention later led to the development of a music notation system for the blind, although Louis Braille did not develop this system himself (Jimenez, et al., 2009). This development helped remove a cultural obstacle that had been introduced by the popularization of written musical notation in the early 1500s. While music had previously been an arena in which the blind could participate on equal footing, the transition from memory-based performance to notation-based performance meant that blind musicians were no longer able to compete with sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997). As a result, a tactile musical notation system became necessary for professional equality between blind and sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997).

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

An essay is a focused piece of writing that explains, argues, describes, or narrates.

In high school, you may have to write many different types of essays to develop your writing skills.

Academic essays at college level are usually argumentative : you develop a clear thesis about your topic and make a case for your position using evidence, analysis and interpretation.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

Your essay introduction should include three main things, in this order:

  • An opening hook to catch the reader’s attention.
  • Relevant background information that the reader needs to know.
  • A thesis statement that presents your main point or argument.

The length of each part depends on the length and complexity of your essay .

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main point of a paragraph . Everything else in the paragraph should relate to the topic sentence.

At college level, you must properly cite your sources in all essays , research papers , and other academic texts (except exams and in-class exercises).

Add a citation whenever you quote , paraphrase , or summarize information or ideas from a source. You should also give full source details in a bibliography or reference list at the end of your text.

The exact format of your citations depends on which citation style you are instructed to use. The most common styles are APA , MLA , and Chicago .

Screen Rant

Naruto's beginning is better and worse than you remember.

The start of Naruto's journey is filled with top-tier character writing and surprisingly deep emotional themes, but it's not without problems.

  • Naruto's beginning defies expectations and ninja stereotypes with his brilliant character introduction.
  • The Shadow Clone technique became one of Naruto's iconic skills, masking his loneliness and showcasing the power of teamwork.
  • Despite minor flaws, Naruto's story starts by setting the stage for emotional depth and epic action.

Naruto is an emotional and epic ninja-filled tale about a once annoying blonde orphan who inspired the world through empathy. While the beginning of the story helped launch a franchise beloved by millions, it wasn't without a few road bumps and missed opportunities. Author Masashi Kishimoto had several manga ideas rejected before Naruto became a hit, and even some of the series' earliest ideas failed to leave a big enough impact to stay around .

Shonen Jump began publishing the Naruto manga in 1999. Like other popular series, Dragon Ball and One Piece , Naruto released one new chapter weekly in the Japanese magazine. Within the story's first chapter, Kishimoto effectively introduced the sprawling ninja world and the Village Hidden in the Leaves. However, the general public's expectations of what a ninja should be are quickly dashed with the masterful introduction to the titular Naruto .

Naruto's introduction in the manga goes against almost every preconceived notion someone would expect from a ninja. Honorable, stealthy, and subtle describe many cast members from the series, but its main character quickly establishes himself as someone who goes against the grain and stands out for all the wrong reasons. Enter Uzumaki Naruto, the class clown whose determination can melt almost any heart once you get to know him.

Iruka Taught Naruto Empathy, An Ability Mightier Than Shadow Clones

Naruto manga by masashi kishimoto, anime produced by studio pierrot.

The beginning of Naruto 's story paints the picture of a tragic orphan boy acting out to gain any sort of attention. While most people grew up with at least one attention-seeking and immature colleague during school, the truth behind Naruto's thirst for acknowledgment would go on to fuel the franchise's story . However, the young boy demonstrated through morally questionable tricks and selfish behavior that he had much growing to do, growing that would require the help of others to reach.

In the first chapter, Naruto learned something better than Shadow Clones: empathy, a skill he used to melt the anger so many of his future foes held.

Help finally reaches the young student through his teacher, Iruka. Although Naruto housed the Nine Tails Fox Spirit that killed his parents, Iruka ultimately saw Naruto for who he was: an innocent and lonely soul hungry for any sort of acknowledgment. From what audiences could tell, Naruto had no guardians and was shunned by all the villagers for no reason that he was aware of. He had no one, and Iruka knew that pain after he lost his parents. The two characters' bond was an early indication that Naruto 's character writing was a step above a standard Shōnen action series.

Despite Naruto's adventures seeing him learn several powerful attacks, Iruka taught Naruto an even more valuable and powerful skill: empathy . Because of the village's cruel and senseless pact to keep the reason for Naruto's shunning a secret from him, he's shown no kindness from others until Iruka. After finally feeling a sense of companionship due to their shared loneliness, Naruto gained the skill of empathy that he used to melt the anger so many of his future foes held. While Naruto 's story is filled with emotionally heavy subject material, it also hosts epic and intelligently constructed action.

Shadow Clones Are Genius On Many Levels

The shadow clone technique is also known as the art of the shadow doppelgänger in some translations.

On the surface level, Naruto's learning of the Shadow Clone Ninjutsu works narratively because it is the primary jutsu he needed to master in order to graduate from his class. However, after being blackmailed by a devious Leaf shinobi named Mizuki, Naruto stole a forbidden ninja scroll and proved his cunning from the start by beating the Third Hokage with a Sexy Transformation Jutsu . The young outcast then gained the ultimate ability to make clones of himself, an effective tool that also masked his own desperate loneliness.

Naruto 's Shadow Clones ninjutsu became one of the series' most iconic techniques. It allows him to create physical clones of himself that divide his chakra amongst each one, which disappears after taking damage, depleting that chakra. However, there are several reasons why it works on so many levels. Naruto houses colossal amounts of chakra due to the Nine-Tails spirit inside him and his heritage, which the franchise does not reveal until much later in its run. Because of this, he can use the Shadow Clones to a much higher degree than almost any ninja in the franchise's history.

Naruto's Strongest Jutsus Were Secretly Hinted at in the First Chapter

Another reason the Shadow Clone jutsu is one of Shonen manga's best techniques is how well it ties into one of the Naruto series' main themes — accomplishing great things with the help of others compared to the efforts of a single person , which connects brilliantly with a narrative level with Naruto's character. Another is how many opportunities its versatility provides the writers to surprise audiences. Not long after learning his iconic technique, Naruto saved his and Iruka's lives with another brilliant choice that teased the depths of his powers with a particularly satisfying beatdown.

The incredibly effective first chapter of Naruto ends with him spawning countless amounts of Shadow Clones thanks to his tremendous amounts of latent chakra to overcome Mizuki with an overwhelming amount of angry orphan clones. By creating the clones, Naruto effectively passed his school's final test with flying colors, allowing him to become an entry-level genin ninja. The emotional moment of Iruka giving Naruto the ninja headband he'd toiled over for so long proved Kishimoto was capable of delivering a wide range of emotions in a short time. As remarkable as Naruto 's introductory chapter was, it was not perfect.

Even Shonen Jump's Best Series' Are Not Perfect

An effective first chapter or episode of a new series has a lot of heavy lifting to do to captivate an audience early. While Naruto 's beginning does a lot of things right when introducing its characters, setting up its world, and the seeds of its overarching plot, certain aspects were introduced that did not play a massive role in the story in the future. One of those issues was Iruka's character, who should have played a more prominent role in the series than he did.

Unfortunately, Iruka and Naruto's bond would take a backseat throughout the rest of the series , which felt like a mistake in the grand scheme of things. Characters introduced later, like Kakashi, Jiraiya, and Sasuke, would go on to push Naruto into several complex relationships and engaging plotlines. However, for being such an essential character in Naruto's life, Iruka has no bearing on 99% of the story. His inclusion seems more superfluous when the series later reveals that Naruto and Sasuke began to form a bond through their shared loneliness as young kids before chapter #1 took place.

A common side-effect of releasing a weekly manga series is that aspects of its story and characters change as the story is being written. Several vital details introduced at the beginning of the story worked better than others, and it's clear which ones failed to stick around. Still, it only took a few more chapters and vital character introductions until Naruto 's profound themes became more apparent. Naruto 's introduction did a lot more right narratively than wrong before it found its way onto the right track to become the legendary manga it's known as today.
