The Best American Essays 2009
I've always loved the Best American series, especially the volume of essays. I haven't picked up the past few editions, so maybe this is a weak entry, or maybe my tastes have changed. In any case, this edition is absolutely awful. It's a shame, because the introduction by Mary Oliver really piqued my interest.

I originally picked this up because of its inclusion of an essay by a college classmate—Kathryn Miles, whose essay "Dog is Our Co-Pilot" is one of the best and longest essays in an unusually short installment of this yearly series. Perhaps the brevity is a consequence of having a poet, Mary Oliver, as the editor.

I'll be blunt: the last few years I've been pretty disappointed with Best American Essays.There have been a few essays in the collections of the past few years that I thought were worthy of the distinction (ones that I'll tack up on my mental Wall of Fame), but I'll chalk that up to personal taste.
